The importance of the Widmanstätten structure to structure theory in metallography has been recognized by many writers.l It is a structure produced by the precipitation of a, new phase from a solid solution upon cooling as a result of changing solid solubility, and displays a characteristic appearance indicating a crystallographic relationship between the new phase and the original solid solution (Fig. 1). First discovered in 1808 by Alois de Widmanstätten2, the structure has been traced by analogy through many alloy systems. Particularly is this true of the steels. Sorby's classic work3 on the microstructure of iron and steel was in essence an attempt to explain the origin of this characteristic structure in meteoric iron. He observed in a Ressemer steel and in a cast-steel ingot structures which we now recognize as typical Widmanstatten figures.4 Osmond Observed structures in a steel ingot analog-ous to those found in meteorites. The self-diffusion coefficient of columbium has been measured over the temperature range 1535o to 2120°C, using the radioactive isotope Nb95 as the tracer. The data for the temperature dependence of the self-diffusion coefficient are best fitted by the equation D = (12.4 ± 0.8) exp [(-105,000 ± 3000)/RT] cm2/sec. THE increasing need for high-temperature structural materials has stimulated considerable interest in the properties of columbium, since it is a strong, ductile metal with a high melting point—in the vicin- ity of 2450oc.l One fundamental property which has not heretofore been measured is the self-diffusion coefficient. The self-diffusion coefficient plays an important role in theories of oxidatioq2 creep,' sintering4 and other phenomena. Accordingly, the investigation reported in this paper was undertaken to determine the value of the self-diffusion coefficient and its temperature dependence by the use of Mb95.

SYSTEMATIC data are presented on the relation of composition of nickel silvers to color, tarnish resistance, hardness and liquidus temperatures, for alloys containing up to 30 per cent nickel and 50 per cent zinc, further modified at certain nickel and zinc contents by 0 to 8 per cent of tin and 0 to 10 per cent of lead. Attention has also been directed, using a still more limited range of alloys, toward a study of tensile properties and such casting properties and characteristics as fluidity, shrinkage and pressure tightness. In some of these, rather broad ranges of composition are dealt with; in others, it has been expedient to focus attention on the Federal Specification 20 per cent nickel silver casting alloy, WWP-541.

THE Copperton mill in reality was a sort of proving ground. It was. designed to serve three purposes: (1) to verify the accuracy of the mine sampling by actually treating substantial tonnages of ore, (2) to demonstrate on a reasonably large scale the percentage of the copper in the ore that could be recovered, and (3) to permit the testing of various kinds of machines and devices for crushing and concentrating the ore, so as to guide the engineers in designing the proposed 6000-ton milling plant at Garfield. As a matter of fact, it contained a lot of second-hand equipment sent by MacNeill and Penrose from the works of the United States Reduction &Refining Co. in Colorado; and it was by no means a model installation. Probably it would have been even less efficient, except for the skillful work of George O. Bradley and-Frank-G, Janney, both of whom had worked with Jackling at Mercur. Bradley was a mechanical engineer employed to design the plant. Later he directed the design of the concentrator at Garfield and remained as consulting mechanical engineer to the company until 1915. Janney, who afterwards became manager of mills, a position that he retained until his death in 1916, was a skilled mechanic at the Golden Gate mill at Mercur when Jackling built the plant in 1897. His flair was making machinery do what it was intended to do. He was not an ore-dressing engineer in a technical sense; but Jackling him- self was a specialist in this respect as well as in designing and construction and Janney's mechanical aptitude made him a particularly valuable man in the Utah organization. A LITERATURE survey1-' of sintering metal pow-A ders and powder compacts indicates that studies have so far been confined primarily to the latter stages of sintering in relatively coarse powders. Presumably this is due to the difficult techniques associated with studies of the early stages of sintering. Recent experimental and theoretical investigationsL-" on the preparation and the magnetic properties of ultrafine ferromagnetic powders suggest the possi- bility of following the sintering process from a very much earlier stage than has previously been considered. It is now well-known that ferromagnetic powder particles which are below a critical size behave as single domains and exhibit permanent magnet qualities characterized by a very high coercive force. When the same particles are fully sintered, the coercive force decreases to very low values corresponding to those of the solid metal. Thus the coercive force appears as a sensitive parameter which may be measured to study the early stages of sintering. To determine the feasibility of this technique, experi-

In discussion of Dr. Fitterer's paper on electrolytic separation of slag inclusions, some results from experiments on electrolyzing high-carbon steels at the SKF Research Laboratory were given. l We had been working for a number of years on chemical methods of separating the inclusions but could not find any solvent that would dissolve the steel without attacking some of the inclusions, particularly the sulfides in which we were mostly interested at the time, nor any that would dissolve all sulfide or silica in filings as fine as 300 mesh without attacking the iron. Electrolytic methods had also been tried without any real progress until we learned from the Bureau of Mines about the use of the collodion membrane around the anode. Our early difficulties were to some extent different from those of the Bureau of Mines, perhaps because of experimenting on steels of higher carbon content, but most of our difficulties were of the same nature as those of the Bureau. Formation of large quantities of basic hydroxides was traced to the use of impure and oxidized ferrous sulfate. To protect from oxidation from the atmosphere during electrolysis, after purer chemicals were obtained, a thin layer, 54 in. or less, of molten paraffin was poured over the surface of the cathode liquid, where it solidified. It was found desirable also to hold the cathode chamber slightly acid by initial addition of 0.1 per cent acid (sulfuric or hydrochloric) to prevent precipitation of the hydroxide. This acidity would decrease gradually and the cathode chamber would become neutral before the end of the electrolyzing. The increase in acidity in the anode chamber during our early experiments had appeared to cause attack of the precipitated sulfides in the residue, which originally was analyzed by volumetric method for sulfur, and for this reason a 10 per cent sodium citrate solution was substituted for the sulfate in the anode chamber. With the use of the more reliable Eschka method for sulfur determination (as in coke), there was however no serious attack on the sulfides in the anode chamber with a variety of different liquids, as shown in Tables 2 and 4. There have been, in the past, other symposia on this subject and there probably will be still others in the future, but I feel sure that this one will go down as one of the most important that have ever been held on the subject. In 1918 A.S.T.M. held a Symposium on Stress- Corrosion Cracking that was confined entirely to brass, because at that time few people were interested in the phenomenon as it applied to other metals. Again under the stimulus of war, we are gathered to discuss the subject, but this time brass alone is but part of our interest. W. N. Triplett (Geology of the Silver-Lead-Zinc Deposits of the Avalos-Providencia District of Mexico, P. 583) was born in Tecumseh, Mich., and attended the University of Michigan and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1912 to 1917 he worked for Moctezuma Copper Co., a Phelps Dodge subsidiary at Nacozari, Sonora, Mex. He served in Army as Second Lieutenant Field Artillery from 1917 to 1918 and from 1919 to 1922 returned to Moctezuma Copper Co. From 1922 to 1952 he has been with Compania Minera de Penoles, S. A., a subsidiary of American Metal Co., Monterrey, N. L., Mexico in Unit Dept. as chief geologist and at present is consulting geologist. Mining geology and operation is of particular interest to Mr. Triplett. He presented a previous paper before with M. W. Hayward entitled, "Occurrence of Lead-Zinc Ores in Dolomitic Limestones in Northern Mexico." Besides being an AIME member, he holds membership in Society of Economic Geologists. Fishing, hunting and photography are his favorite hobbies.

Galvanic interaction between particulate chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and copper results in the rapid conversion of chalcopyrite to chalcocite. The effects of temperature, surface area, concentration of sulfuric acid and agitation were systematically evaluated. The kinetics were found to be controlled by a steady-state current flow controlled by the effective anodic and cathodic surface areas involved in the galvanic couple. The experimental activation energy was 11.5 and stoichiometric data and reaction products have been characterized. The overall kinetic system has been evaluated based upon an electrochemical model.

Field observations were made of rock phenomena in shale, dolomite, and fractured quartzite in the Burgin Mine, Eureka, Utah. Draft closure rates were measured with extensometers and convergence gages. In addition the effects of hydraulic props upon the retardation of closure was also monitored. Drift closure rates were found to be constant and to vary between 0.32 x 10-8 min-1 for dolomite and 23.8 x 10-8 min-1 for soft shale. The installation of props set at constant load served to retard the closure rates. General results show closure to occur at a constant rate for all cases, to be non-uniform around the drift openings, and to be increasingly retarded toward a zero rate by increases in prop load.

I HAVE been asked by the Chairman of the Engineering Education Committee to outline what the engineering colleges would like the mining companies to do with the young engineer just, out of college. It has been suggested that, because my own personal experience has been almost entirely within the coal industry, I handle this subject from that view- point. Many thoughtful engineering educators are today wondering what effect the present employment policies of many industrial companies are going to have on the young man just starting out in his profession. Since before the World War large industrial concerns, such as those in the electrical and mechanical industries, have gone to the colleges to interview 'likely graduates until today there has developed in most of our engineering colleges, especially in the eastern part of the country, what appears to be a lively competition on the part of these companies in bidding for the young graduate engineer. The employers of mining engineers, with one or two exceptions, have not yet begun to enter this competition. It remains to be seen how serious this situation will become, how it will affect the training of other engineers, and what effect, if any, it will have on the mind of the young man about to enter college who may be inclined to take up mining engineering, but who gains the impression from this well advertised employment service just mentioned that there is no opportunity for him in the mineral industry as com- pared with the opportunities offered in say civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering.

IntRodUction While working with a number of very sticky cracking clays from western Canada the writer became interested in a study of the cause of the excessive plasticity. This led to a review of the rather bulky literature on the subject and the finding that plasticity still remains to be satisfactorily explained. Most of these investigations seem to have been carried on solely from the chemical viewpoint, the geologic aspects having been ignored. In nearly every case, the investigators have worked with the higher-grade clays of low to medium plasticity, such as the kaolins, the excessively plastic ones having generally been neglected, partly because of their limited application, yet the author believes that these are

ONLY in exceptional cases can the ordinary methods of chemistry be used for determining the constitution of compound metallic substances. Recourse has therefore been taken to special methods, the main expedients of which are, as we know, thermal analysis and metal microscopy. To these may be added-though more accessory-the determination of electric conductivity, specific volume, hardness or other properties. The information obtained by these methods has been compiled in equilibrium diagrams. Naturally, the technically most important alloys, such as steel, bronze and some others, have been subjected to very close study, and many investigators have devoted themselves to the solving of their problems of constitution. The equilibrium diagrams of these systems are therefore known today with a comparatively high degree of accuracy, even though it must be admitted that many details regarding their transformation reactions still remain to be completely explained. The equilibrium diagrams of the other alloys as a rule have not been determined so accurately. Most of them are based only on approximate determinations of the homogeneity ranges of the various phases. Thus extensive, detailed studies remain before these diagrams may be considered as established. Unfortunately, it must also be admitted that many of the alloy diagrams given in the present handbooks are as a whole very dubious. As a matter of fact, many of them may really only be viewed as the results of rather superficial, orientating investigations. In fact, there also seems to be a general opinion prevailing in our day that much work still remains to be done before the equilibrium conditions of the alloys may be considered as fully explained. At present, in almost all institutes for research on metals, as well as in many university laboratories, investigations to this effect are being carried out. As a rule, the classical methods of metallography, the thermal analysis and metal microscopy are applied.
