Under existing economic conditions, the treatment of gold ores occupies an outstanding position in metallurgical activity. The increased price of gold has automatically brought about a reclassification of old dumps and low-grade orebodies, and many that formerly were considered valueless are now being vigorously investigated and worked. This situation has developed problems that have taxed the ingenuity and ability of metallurgists to the utmost. Some gold ores give a high extraction of gold by standardized methods of treatment; other ores of apparently similar character yield but a relatively small percentage of their gold when treated by the same processes. Surface Contamination The experience gained by microscopic study of numerous gold ores and tailings has shown that there are pronounced differences in the physical characteristics of the minerals composing them, more especially of the gold. Repeated studies of tailings from flotation and cyanidation of gold ores has established the fact that surface contaminations on gold particles are often directly responsible for high gold losses; comparison of gold particles isolated from flotation concentrates and the resulting tailings have showed that the clean gold has been recovered and the tarnished or contaminated gold invariably lost in the tailing. Obviously, it is not possible to make such a comparison of gold ores treated by cyanidation, as the clean gold has been taken into solution; but when the gold found in cyanide tailing has a tarnished or coated surface, one may infer, with a reasonable degree of certainty, that the clean gold has been extracted. This premise is supported by experimental evidence obtained by isolating particles of tarnished gold and exposing them to cyanide solution in small parting cups. In one such experiment, tarnished gold particles picked from a cyanide tailing showed but slight evidence 01 dissolving at the end of 27 days. INTRODUCTION.-This paper gives the results of our micro-graphic determinations of the position of Ae3 in a series of 14 hypo-eutectoid steels of varying carbon content, one of them very rich in phosphorus, and of SEe for one hyper-eutectoid steel. We have pro-ceeded chiefly by noting the temperature -at which the reabsorption of the pro-eutectoid element is found to be complete after a 30-min. holding, but in part also by noting the temperature at which its precipitation begins. Observations on these same steels by Messrs. Burgess, Crowe, and Rawdon, of the United States Bureau of Standards, are given in a paper' issued simultaneously with this, while in a third paper s one of us compares these data with those of earlier observers. These three papers are treated as one whole by numbering their sections, tables, and illustrations continuously, and by setting the folding plates of micrographs at the end of the last paper. THE COMPOSITION OF THE STEELS EXPERIMENTED ON is given in Table I. Notation. and Definitions.-Following Osmond's development of Tschernoff's notation; in which " Ac3 " is the upper limit of the hypo-eutectoid part of the transformation range as observed in heating up, and " Ar3 " is that same limit as observed in cooling down, and following the usual custom of calling the upper limit of the hyper-eutectoid part of that range "SE," we may go farther and call this latter limit " SEc " when observed in heating up .and " SEr " when observed in cooling down.

WASTE of coal, or perhaps more properly the percentage of its recovery in mining, has keenly interested me during an experience of over a half century in coal mining. In the early part of that time and until a few ears after World War I the use of better mining plans and supervision resulted in an increased recovery. Since then, and particularly since controlled prices have been effective and mechanized mining has been extensively practiced, the tendency has all been toward lesser recovery in mining. The purpose of this paper is not to criticize the methods being used, which after all are the result of economic forces, nor to point to any particular mining method or to any locality where the best recovery is obtained. but to call attention to the tremendous waste of our national coal resources that is constantly continuing. A possible method of reducing this loss will be suggested. but without any illusions that it will be followed or that much attention will be paid to it.

The Geology Div. of Northern Pacific Railway Co. has adapted to its exploration efforts field procedures for geochemical sampling and semi-quantitative analysis which have been developed through research by the U. S. Geological Survey. The sampling is done in conjunction with reconnaissance geologic mapping on aerial photographs or during field checking of maps which have been prepared largely by photo-geologic interpretation. Stream sediment or soil samples are taken and readily soluble combined heavy metals are extracted with ammonium citrate followed by colorimetric titration with dithizone at the sample site. The effectiveness of this approach has been demonstrated both in positive and negative results, thereby assisting in the elimination of large areas of land from further immediate attention and in providing targets for followup exploration. An occa sional sample is submitted for spectrographic analysis as a check on the possible presence of other elements of economic significance. Field laboratory procedures are also being implemented for determining molybdenum, mercury, and other metals which may be valuable in themselves or useful as pathfinder elements in outlining mineralized areas. A lead-zinc occurrence in Oregon and a copper deposit in Montana were readily detected and outlined by stream sediment and soil sampling and a heavy metal anomaly that lacks obvious interpretation has been found in northwestern Montana. Detailed mapping and additional sampling are followed by other exploration techniques if warranted. Northern Pacific's program of reconnaissance mineral evaluation of company-owned lands and adjoining areas was outlined in a paper presented at the American Mining Congress meeting in Las Vegas four years ago. That report included policies and procedures with respect to mineral development on Railway Co. lands and may be referred to for information on these matters.1 In a sense this paper is a progress report on the use of geochemical prospecting in Northern Pacific's continuing mineral evaluation program. At this time there are positive results but as yet there is no real success story in the form of a minable ore body. GEOCHEMICAL PROSPECTING PROCEDURES The decision to use geochemistry as a reconnaissance exploration tool must be followed by research into sampling and analytical methods and into the interpretation of results. Various analytical methods were tried and evaluated by the Geology Div., including hot and cold acid extraction with and without fusion of the sample, panning and magnetic separation followed by dithizone testing of the magnetite, and cold aqueous extraction of metallic ions followed by indicator tests. Samples were first sent to the laboratory for analysis; later field laboratories were established and now virtually all testing is done at the sample site. It was concluded that, where applicable, the quickest dependable methods for reconnaissance use are the dithizone field tests for readily extractable heavy metals. This involves the simultaneous treatment of a sample, usually of soil or stream sediment, with two immiscible liquids; one a cold aqueous extractant (ammonium citrate) and the other a solution of dithizone in toluene or xylene.2 Dithizone is a colorimetric indicator that reacts quantitatively with copper, lead, zinc, and several other metals to form colored complexes in organic solvents. Results may be expressed in ml of 0.001 pct dithizone that are required to reach the blue end point, or calibration of the test results can be carried out with standard solutions of zinc; conversion factors would then be expressed in ppm, zinc equivalent. Calibration of dithizone solution with zinc standards indicates that 1 ml of 0.001 pct dithizone is equivalent to approximately 0.25 ppm of zinc. An authoritative report on dithizone field tests authored by H. E. Hawkes in the June-July 1963 issue of Economic Geology* states "The appeal of these techniques has been the simplicity and speed of the determinations as compared with more tedious laboratory determinations of trace metals in weathered rocks, soils, or plant materials. (1) Introduction: The purpose of this paper is to call attention to certain methods which will shorten and simplify the calculation of plane tri-angulation. These methods, though not new,',2 do not appear to have been properly publicized in the United States. The cotangent (or tangent) solution of a triangle permits calculation of coordinates in a smooth series of operations of the calculating machine with a minimum of notation. The semigraphical solution permits the simultaneous solution of a number of intersections, at one station, without the added burden of solving additional triangles. This in turn encourages more numerous field checks and more complete office computation than would normally be undertaken. Tables I and I1 show the distinct advantage which the combined use of the cotangent and the semi-graphical solutions hold over, what might well be called, the standard solution. It will be shown that the positions for the entire net in fig. 1 may be calculated without computing any distances, thus saving much computation. (2) Comparison of Cotangent and Standard Solutions: To compare the cotangent method with the standard method, the notation involved in the solution of triangle 1-X-4, fig. 1, by both methods is shown. Fig. 2 shows the given information, that is, the coordinates and azimuths of Stations 1 and 4, and angles of the triangle or the azimuths from Stations 1 and 4 to Station X. (Azimuths are used here because the author feels that they are easier to handle, but bearings may be used by those who prefer them). The kinetics of the growth of sulfate layers on blocks of Cu20 has been studied between 688" and 800°C. At 788c the over-all weight increases followed the parabolic rate law, with k = 216 30 sq mg per cm4 min, using a 1:1 entering gas mixture of SO2:02. At 757 after an initial linear period the parabolic rate law was followed, with k = 57.8 10 sq mg per cm4 min. The gas mixture required a platinum catalyst to produce the maximum SOs pressure. The sulfation rate at 757' and 788c was high until all the CUZO had changed into a core of CuO, when it became very much lower. At 757°C marker experiments showed that the sulfates (CuO. CuS04 and CuSO4) grow outwards from the oxide surface, but CuO. CuS04 mixed with CuO was found beneath the markers. At 688 markers were found at the CuO. CuS04/CuS04 interface. Visual observations at 757 showed a liquid eutectic moving beneath the sulfate surface. causing very rapid sulfation and extruding to solidify as thick 'needles" up to 8 mm long. Marker experiments have shown conclusi.cely that CuO grows on Cu20 in air by the outward migration of copper. ThermODYNAMIC measurements on the sulfate and basic sulfate of copper, reported recently,' are followed here by measurements of the rates of formation of these sulfates on cuprous oxide, in order to provide a background for the understanding of roasting processes. peretti2 and McCabe and Morgan3 have shown that the phase Cu20 lies next to Cu2S when the sulfide is roasted under conditions where sulfates will be formed. Since this would present too complex a system for kinetic study, the present work4 has been based on the kinetics of sulfation of the oxide phase. The results of a study of the kinetics and mechanism of the sulfation of cobaltous oxide have recently been reported.4,5 Results on the sulfation of cuprous oxide have also appeared,6 but are at variance with those to be reported here. This seems to be because the previous workers6 did not obtain constant SO3 pressures from the SO2/O2 sulfating gas mixtures used, as will be discussed later. Wadsworth, Leiter, Porter, and Lewis found that the sulfates produced when SO2/O2 mixtures are passed over Cu20 at red heats are CuS04 and the basic sulfate CuO.CuSO4. When the decomposition of CuS04 was followed' by differential thermal analysis, a stage corresponding to CuO .CuS04 was reached before decomposition into the oxide occurred. APPARATUS The vertical furnace used for quantitative studies was a conventional resistance-heated and propor- tionately controlled furnace with an even zone (1 deg) which was 4 cm long. The gas mixtures of SO2 and 02 were made by mixing measured flows from capillary flowmeters and drying over phosphorous pentoxide before passing them into the Pyrex top-piece of the furnace assembly. A mullite tube of bore 2% cm was used as reaction vessel and at the bottom of this tube was a trap for SO3, which condensed as a colorless liquid. The residual gas was led into a fume cupboard for ventilation to the atmosphere. The furnace used for visual observations of needle growth and other phenomena consisted of a transparent silica reaction tube of bore 3 cm, having an optically flat silica window sealed into its wall. The reaction tube was clamped vertically, inside a mullite tube of bore 4 cm and length 42 cm which was heated by Kanthal windings. The window in the silica reaction tube was arranged opposite a hole 3 cm wide and 2 cm tall which had been cut in the wall of the mullite winding tube 19 cm from its top end. A binocular microscope was used to look through the window, illumination being provided by a focusing microscope-lamp offset sideways and downwards. The oxide block to be sulfated was suspended from the removable Pyrex top-piece to the reaction tube, by means of which it was inserted at the start of the experiment, and through which entered the S02/02 gas mixture. The variation of the temperature inside the reaction tube with horizontal and vertical displacement from the window was investigated, and, while it can be said that the temperature was constant 1 deg, its value at a given position was known only to 12 deg. In both furnaces, the oxide block to be sulfated was suspended from a small silica hook immediately downstream from a platinum thimble used as catalyst, which was held on a long silica rod from a Pyrex spring attached to the removable Pyrex top-piece of the furnace. The spring was only included in the quantitative sulfating furnace; its sensitivity was 1.4 cm per g and it was found to be free from creep in a 16-hr test when carrying the working load. The extensions were followed by a cathetometer which could be read to 0.001 cm, corresponding to i0.7 mg. Extensions of the spring were measured on adding weights between 5 and 500 mg to the working load (thimble + oxide block), and Hooke's law was closely obeyed. SAMPLES Cuprous oxide blocks were prepared by oxidizing Johnson Matthey "Specpure" copper sheet of 1 mm thickness (impurities: iron at 3 ppm, silver at 2 ppm, lead, nickel, sodium, and silicon each at 1 ppm, calcium, chromium, magnesium, and manganese each at less than 1 ppm) for 6 days in air at 1000°C in a re-crystallized alumina boat. The upper limit of richness of concentrates that can be smelted by means of the blast furnace without added diluents is fixed by the operation of sintering. A sinter feed with normal gangue constituents, containing more than about 50 per cent of lead, tends to fuse; as a result, air does not come sufficiently into contact with the sulphides at roasting temperatures, and sulphur elimination is poor. Since most lead concentrates now contain 55 to 80 per cent lead, it is necessary to add diluents to lower the grade of such sinter feed to about 50 per cent or less. This not only entails the expense of providing barren diluents when adequate diluents containing precious metals are not available but also appreciably lowers the capacity of the blast furnace to produce lead and increases slag losses. Attempts to desulphurize rich lead concentrates by methods other than sintering have not proved successful. Flash roasting, for example, converts much of the lead sulphide to lead sulphate rather than to oxide. However, this suggested the possibility that deliberate flash roasting of the concentrates to sulphate, followed by sinter roasting of the resulting product, might prove promising, particularly inasmuch as the elimination of sulphur from lead sulphate requires heat alone and not contact with atmospheric oxygen. The sintering of lead sulphate products has additional interest because important amounts of such products are now treated by lead smelters. Precipitation processes occurring during both furnace cooling and aging of copper-iron albys were studied by means of electrical and magnetic measurements. On furnace cooling, two distinct stages in the precipitation process were detected; one occurring above and the other below 850° C. The kinetics of precipitation from quenched alloys were studied between 200° and 700°C. The reaction appears to be consistent with the concept of tmcleation of precipitate particles at dislocation loops formed by the clustering of quenched-in vacancies. A study Of in copper-iron alloys is particularly interesting because the combination of magnetic and electrical properties in these allovs provides a quantitative means of following the course of the precipitation reaction. (New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE James diagonal-plane slimer is specially adapted to handle the finest slimes, but it will also handle sands as coarse as 40-mesh. The saving efficiency of this machine is due to the original construction of the deck, and to the rapid reciprocating movement imparted to it by the head-motion. The deck consists of a plurality of connected planes, having a certain fixed ratio of inclination one to another. These planes intersect each other diagonally to the stroke-line of the table and are arranged so as to give the pulp on the table a double treatment. This double concentration performed by the diagonal-plane deck produces cleaner concentrates and tailings than those obtained by the operation of two separate machines. The action of the diagonal planes settles, combines, and holds all the concentrates in one compact mass, sharply defined from the gangue, and easily cut away without loss. Many slime-concentrating machines distribute the feed-pulp for a distance of 4 or 5 ft. only, and upon a very limited settling-surface. This results in a thick, heavy deposit, from which it is impossible to stratify the values and wash, away the gangue, the resulting products being dirty concentrates, and tailings carrying high values. The diagonal-plane slimer distributes the feed-pulp for a distance of 10 ft., and upon a settling-surface having an area of 40 sq. ft.; in other words, it spreads the pulp thinly on the table, which allows the metallic values to settle through the gangue quickly, forming a bottom stratum from which the thinly-distributed overlying stratum. of gangue is easily brushed away by the feed-water without disturbing the underlying concentrates. THE construction industry normally contributes extensively to the general economic welfare of all sections of the country. Billions of dollars are spent for materials and labor, and the success or failure of many business enterprises depends upon the volume of construction. The steel, aluminum, copper, cement, brick and tile, lime, gypsum, stone, sand and gravel, and several of the less prominent mineral industries are vitally concerned. Of great interest, therefore, is the accumulation of needed construction following the relative inactivity of the past five years, the recent moderate revival in building, and the prospect of a broader and more definite upturn. One may judge the magnitude of possible expenditure for construction by what has occurred in the past. The peak years were 1925 to 1928, inclusive, when the annual values of con- tracts awarded amounted to over six billion dollars. In marked contrast was the 1933 total of about 1% billion, the lowest level shown in the Federal Reserve Board Index, which goes back to 1919, and the more favorable 1935 figure of about 1.7 billion. An increase of nearly four billion over the 1935 volume would be necessary to equal the peak year 1928.

In a recent paper* on the origin of corundum associated with the peridotites of North Carolina, attention was called to the constant occurrence of the mineral, chromite, in these rocks. The field-data obtained during the preparation of that paper have been used largely in the present paper. During the past summer the general occurrences of chromite have been carefully studied, and those in North Carolina have been especially examined in the field. It is purposed to give, in this paper, the reasons why the chromite should be regarded as having been formed at the same time with the peridotites, having been held in solution by the molten mass of the peridotite, and crystallizing out among the first minerals as the mass began to cool. This theory is essentially the same as that advanced by me for the origin of the corundum associated with the peridotite rocks, and a similar line of reasoning has been used to substantiate the theory proposed. Investigations concerning the igneous origin of some of the ores have been materially aided, during recent years, by the skillful experiments of Morozewicz and Lagorio,§ and by researches that show us, more clearly, why we should regard a fused mass of rock as a liquid, having similar properties to an ordinary solution. These experiments have shown that a molten basic glass, similar in composition to the basic magnesian rocks, dissolves alumina readily, and that upon cooling, the first minerals to separate out are corundum and spinel.

The principles on which an art is founded are usually few and necessarily basic in nature, but he who wishes to achieve the power to select his aides and give success to important undertakings that may be entrusted to him in the future must ordinarily undergo years of drudgery in order to gain the experience that will enable him to distinguish such fundamentals through the haze of reenforcing detail that clothes and tends to disguise them. This especially applies to those who would dream dreams that may come partly true. Professor Henry B. Cornwall of Princeton was a graduate of Freiberg with mining experience in Mexico. He was my friend and mentor during my college life. In 1883 I finished my postgraduate course and had two offers of work to consider. His advice is very clear in my mind today. It was essentially as follows: I know something of the mines of Mexico and have crossed through the mountains of the West. The West possesses a vast area of mountain and valley. California has long had its gold mines, the Comstock and Gilpin County followed and now comes the discovery of Leadville. I believe the West, will become a great mining country. You can choose now to teach here or go to the mountains. Were I in your place I would go West and identify myself with mining.

MAINTAINING a satisfactory structure in brass and bronze castings has always been a foundry problem of great practical importance. While metallurgists and scientific investigators have not entirely ignored this matter, it has received less of their attention than has been given to iron, steel and the wrought copper and aluminum alloys. Investigation in this field has probably been discouraged to some extent by the complicated nature of the alloys involved. Hundreds of alloys are in more or less common use, most of them containing copper, zinc, lead and tin in-widely varying proportions. They also contain appreciable percentages of iron and antimony as impurities, and often phosphorus, which has been added as a deoxidizer and fluidifier. Small amounts of sulfur are usually present. It is not uncommon to find nickel, sometimes in rather substantial quantities. Traces of other metals are frequently present. So complicated and variable a mixture obviously offers difficulties in. any investigation of the various factors that influence the structure and other properties of the casting.

ONE of the earliest problems in the life of any community is the provision of an adequate supply of water sufficiently free from all types of contamination to be suitable for domestic purposes. Generally speaking, the location of most communities is determined to a great extent by the availability of an adequate supply of satisfactory water. For a mining camp, that consideration cannot be foremost. Here, the ore takes first place, and the men who mine it must do the best they can under the existing conditions. If there is no local source of water, it must be brought from some distant source or must be found by sinking shafts or drilling wells. Fortunate indeed is the mining company that discovers a commercially valuable ore deposit beside a never failing creek full of pure water, with sufficient water rights available, because the acquisition of water in any other manner nearly always involves not only a considerable period of time but the expenditure of considerable money. The experience of Climax Molybdenum Co. demonstrates the measures that sometimes are necessary in order to provide a suitable supply of water. The Climax mine and mill are on the Continental Divide, about 13 miles northeast of Leadville. The elevation of the domestic part of the camp varies from a minimum of 11,320 ft. to a maximum of approximately 11,550 ft. above sea level, and, as is common at such altitudes, the near-by streams that might be suitable for a water supply are small and intermittent, usually flowing only during the summer months. The only streams of any size in the immediate vicinity of Climax are the Ten Mile and Arkansas Rivers. The headwaters of Ten Mile River are on the Company's property, and its water has been used for the domestic supply. The headwaters of the Arkansas River are about 2 miles distant and have not been used as a source of supply by the company. During the past 11 years of the production of molybdenum at-Climax, the number of families living there has increased from about 45 to 283, and the population has increased from about 200 to 1200 persons. Consequently, the capacity of the water-treatment facilities, and the amount of water available, had to be increased to meet the requirements of the camp. As early as 1932 it was recognized that the water in Ten Mile River would not continue to be adequate for domestic purposes and after considerable discussion it was decided to drive a drift through the major fault in an effort to find additional water. This drift was completed in 1935 and tapped sufficient water to make the supply adequate. This water was treated in a tank underground, where lime was added, and was then piped into the domestic supply lines. At about the time this line was completed, the presence of fluorine in harmful concentrations was discovered in the water. This problem was submitted to the International Filter Co. and in November 1937 a plant of its design was put in operation for treating the water to remove the fluorine. This plant proved entirely successful,

INTRODUCTION In this paper, a numerical process for selecting a mining method, with the emphasis on underground mass mining techniques, such as caving, induced caving, and stoping, is proposed. In the past, selection of a mining method for a new property was based primarily on operating experience at similar type deposits and on methods already in use in the district of the deposit. Then, the chosen method was modified during the early years of mining as ground conditions and ore character were bet- ter understood. Today, however, the large capital investment required to open a new mine or change an existing mining system make it imperative that the mining methods examined during the feasibility studies and the method actually selected have a high probability of attaining the projected production rates. Although experience and engineering judgment still provide major input into the selection of a mining method, subtle differences in the characteristics of each deposit, which may affect the method chosen or the mine design, can usually be perceived only through analysis of measured characteristics. The parameters that must be examined when choosing a mining method include: 1) geometry and grade distribution of the deposit; 2) rock mass strength for the ore zone, the hanging wall, and the footwall; 3) mining costs and capitalization requirements; 4) mining rate; 5) type and availability of labor; 6) environmental concerns; and 7) other site-specific considerations. This paper encompasses a detailed look at the first two parameters since they, plus mining costs, have the greatest impact on the selection of a mining method. The proposed method selection process is for a project where drilling has defined sufficient geologic reserves, but little or no underground development has been done. Since each deposit has its own characteristic geanetry/grade distribution, and rock mechanics properties, mining method selection should be at least a two-stage process. In Stage 1, the deposit is described in terms of geometry, grade distribution, and rock mechanics properties. Using these parameters, the mining methods can be ranked to determine which are most applicable; they can then be considered in general terms of mining and capitalization cost, mining rate, type and availability of personnel, environmental concerns, and other site-specific considerations. In Stage 2, the most likely mining methods are costed out, based on a general mine plan. Mining and capitalization costs are used to determine a cut-off grade fran which a minable reserve can be calculated; economic comparisons can then be made to determine the optimum mining method and economic feasibility. During the mine planning phase of Stage 2, rock mechanics information would be used to provide realistic estimates of underground opening size, amount of support, orientation of openings, and caving characteristics, and open pit slope angles. If ground control or operational problems should be encountered with the methods being considered, modifications could be made. Although planning on paper extends start-up time, it is cheaper to err on paper than to find the error after mining has begun. METHOD SELECTION - STAGE 1 The main purpose of Stage 1 is to select those mining methods which should be considered in greater detail. The simplest way to do this is by defining those characteristics required for each mining method and then determining whether the characteristics of the deposit are suitable. However, no one mining method is so restrictive that it can be used for only one set of characteristics, as indicated by the classification system proposed by Boshkov and Wright (1973). In the mining method selection proposed, geometry, grade distribution, and rock mechanics characteristics are ranked according to their acceptability for ten general mining methods.

Michigan's production of 17,301,000 bbl. in 1945, which is in line with previous years, has been maintained by extensions to old fields like Deep River, Adams, Fork, and others. There were a number of new discoveries but, as in the past, these are not given very much importance because enough drilling has not been done to develop their potentialities; however, judging by the past, some of them will develop enough production so that 1946 -will probably be in line with other years. Activities in Michigan were confined to the Basin area of the lower Peninsula, which has been under development since 1925.

Introduction In 1977, the US Bureau of Mines awarded a grant to the state of South Carolina to explore the possibility of using Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data as an aid in monitoring surface mining activities in selected counties of the state. Work had been done in Aiken County prior to the grant by USBM and state personnel at the EROS Data Center using both the GE Image 100 and ESL IDIMS systems. The initial work on the 1:100 consisted of locating and measuring the areas of various kaolin mines. The results were excellent on location, identification, and accurate area measurements of several mines as compared with aerial photos of each mine. The effort also included locating and measuring the size of all mines (including sand and gravel) within two US Geological Survey (USGS) 7 % - min quadrangle maps. Line printer overlays using the IDIMS equipment and software resulted in the location of all known mines within an estimated error less than zt 91.4 m. Mine acreage was calculated by counting each symbol (which represented one pixel) and multiplying by 1.1 (the number of acres per pixel). [Fig. 1] shows a portion of one quadrangle overlay. [Table 1] gives a comparison of acreage measured for several mines from the 1-100 and IDIMS system vs. aerial photo measurements. The success of the preliminary work resulted in the South Carolina Land Resources Conservation Commission submitting a proposal to USBM for funding to expand the scope of work to other mineral mining operations within the state and determine if Landsat Imagery could be used to accurately locate and measure mining and reclamation activity on a continuing basis. Three separate tasks were proposed for selected kaolin mines in Aiken County: Task 1, to measure changes in active mine developments over the period 1974-77; Task 2, to measure reclamation activity, and, if time permitted, seasonal changes in mine signatures over the same period of time; and Task 3, to classify one complete mining operation (i.e., differentiate between active, spoil, overburden, water, reclaimed portions and surrounding terrain. The major effort was centered around J.M. Hubeis Richardson mine. Mining operations were progressing in a northerly direction and included three areas of reclamation: one prior to 1974; one started during early 1974; and one reclaimed during 1976. A discussion of all work done under the grant is available in the March 1979 Final Report listed under References. Computer compatible tapes (CCTs) containing MSS data from Landsat Path 18, Row 37, were purchased from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) covering the period February 1974 through January 1977. The MSS data were processed on the General Electric Image 100 using parallelepiped classification at the EROS Data Center's Data Analysis Laboratory, Sioux Falls, SD, and at the Stanford Remote Sensing Laboratory, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA, utilizing both an unsupervised classification (ISOMIX) and a supervised classification (sequential discriminant analysis). Studies at Stanford University Remote Sensing Lab (SRSL). In Feburary 1977, initial work was begun at Stanford using the STANSORT computer program running on a DEC PDP-10 (Honey, Prelat, and Lyon, 1974). This software is fully interactive and designed to study Landsat CCT data at high resolution (small areas) on a pixel-by-pixel basis (Lyon, 1977). Unsupervised Classification. The initial step was to locate the Richardson mine on the positive print of the full Landsat scene from CCT 1644-15252, dated 6/17/74. This was relatively easy due to a large abandoned kaolin mine and a long narrow pond clearly visible in the scene. Two unsupervised classifications of the Richardson mine were run using ISOMIX clustering (Honey, Prelat and Lyon, 1974). (ISOMIX essentially follows the interactive clustering procedures of ISOCLS Kan, Holley, and Parker. 1973). Although the classifications were successfully accomplished, it was apparent from the TV display that the results did not clearly define the mine areas. A supervised classification would have to be made in order to clearly separate each portion of the mine. Supervised Classification. MOST commercial alloys undergo changes in phase composition after casting. This is a natural result of the fact that the alloys are not in a state of phase equilibrium as cast and phase changes will therefore take place, with more or less rapidity, in an attempt to attain equilibrium. The practical aspect of aging in zinc-alloy die castings concerns the changes in physical properties and in dimensions that may accompany aging phase changes. Harmful alterations have been reduced to a minimum and zinc-alloy die castings are being produced today that are so stable with respect to dimensions and physical properties that they are entirely suitable for most practical purposes1. In the first paper2 of this series, and in this paper, aging phase changes of zinc alloy die castings have been investigated and the possible influence of these changes on dimensional changes of the castings has been evalu-ated and compared with the dimensional changes actually experienced. The change of dimensions has been selected for practical comparison in these papers because the effect of phase changes on the dimensions of a casting is directly calculable; from X-ray crystal-analysis data of the phase structure. The die-casting alloys considered contain, in addition to zinc, 4 per cent of aluminum, about 0:03 per cent magnesium, and from 0 to 3 per cent of copper. It was shown in the former paper that the eutectoidal decomposition of the beta aluminum-zinc phase, while intrinsically capable of causing a considerable shrinkage, can have very little effect on the observed shrinkage of die castings because it takes place within a few days of aging, whereas the observed shrinkage continues for five weeks.
