Previous researchers have used the cutting and rejoining model to represent a porous body when attempting to place Archie's law on a theoretical basis and calculate rock permeabilities (F = Ø-m, where F = formation factor, = - porosity and m = a constant). In using the model, a porous solid is assumed to consist of sections with parallel sides containing straight. continuous pores of total porosity 4 (pore to total volume or, for a homogeneous body, pore to total area). The joining of pores at an interface between two sections is assumed to be random which results in a common pore area Ø2. This reduced area Ø2 is then taken as that area which limits electrical conduction or fluid flow in the body. Agreement between experimental results and results calculated using a model is not always good Because of this, various modifications of the model are presented — for instance, the random nature of the joining is questioned. Formation factor measurements on specially constructed porous specimens are described in this paper. it is concluded that the common pore area limits flow completely only if sections containing straight pores are very thin, and that, in most natural materials, the common pore area at an interface must be greater than that given by random joining. However, the model is still useful in permeability calculations, provided that the fractional area limiting flow is determined from formation factor measurements. INTRODUCTION Two important properties of porous media are permeability k, which describes the ease with which a fluid can flow through a porous medium, and formation factor F, defined as the ratio of the resistivity of a saturated specimen to the resistivity of the saturating liquid which describes the electrical properties of the saturated material. k is defined by Darcy's law,l k= µqL/P Ae . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [1] where µ = liquid viscosity, q = flow rate, L = length of specimen, p = pressure across the specimen and = - the effective area over which flow occurs, F is given experimentally by Archie's law,2 F = Ø-m ,..............(2) where 4 is porosity defined as the pore to total volume or, for a homogeneous body, the pore to total area; and m lies between 1.3 for loose sand and 2 for cemented sand. Consider a porous body of total cross-sectional area A and length L, saturated with a liquid of resistivity R and with an effective area for conduction of Ae. Then, from the definition of F given previously, F=A/Ae , ................(3) or, from Eqs. 2 and 3, Ae = A Øm ..............(4) Thus, in any attempt to calculate k or F, some assumptions must be made concerning the pore structure of the body and a value derived for A,. To determine Ae, Childs and George3 and Wyllie and Gardner4 suggested an elementary statistical representation often referred to as the cutting and rejoining model of a porous body. The body is assumed to be composed of two or more parallel-sided sections of porosity 4, containing straight, continuous pores with a common pore area of Ø2 at an interface between two sections. ONE of the earliest investigations of ground water in Florida was made in 1513 when Ponce de Leon arrived at St. Augustine in search of the Fountain of Youth. The history of the development of the water resources of the State shows that the large artesian reservoir that underlies Florida was discovered in the latter part of the last century. Part of that history is given by L. C. Johnson1 who states that the first successful artesian well in Florida was drilled at St. Augustine between 1880 and 1882. After the City of Jacksonville failed to obtain a flow of artesian water at a depth of nearly 400 ft and abandoned the drilling, R. N. Ellis, City Engineer, and L. C. Johnson, using Johnson's knowledge of the geologic structure of the artesian reservoir, estimated correctly that artesian water could be obtained at a depth of about 500 ft. Thus began the development of the large artesian system in the northeastern part of the State. In 1908, the Florida Geological Survey issued its first report on the ground water of central Florida.

This paper reports the results of studies of the impact properties of quenched and tempered alloy-steel plates as a function of sulfur content. It was found that the impact energy levels decreased continuously as the sulfur content increased and that there was a straight-line relationship between impact energy and sulfur content when plotted on logarithmic coordinates. Cross rolling raised the level of these Lines for transverse tests and lowered the level for logitudinal tests proportionately to the amount of cross rolling. ALTHOUGH it has been generally recognized that, for applications in which notch toughness is critical, the sulfur content of the steels used should be held to a low value, quantitative information on the effect of sulfur on notch toughness has not been available. For such applications, it is a common practice to specify minimum impact values, and in order that these may be met consistently it is important that the steel producer know quantitatively the effect of sulfur on notch toughness so that realistic sulfur content limits can be applied to the steels they produce. In many instances, particularly in flat-rolled products, impact properties are specified in the direction transverse to the principal rolling direction, so that the factors affecting the anisotropy or directionality of impact properties are also of concern to the steel producer. For some applications, furthermore, it is a common practice to increase the sulfur content of steels in order to improve their machinability, and, in such instances, the effect of this practice on notch toughness may often be of concern. This paper reports on an investigation, carried out at Battelle Memorial Institute, designed to furnish this quantitative information on the effect of sulfur on notch toughness and also to furnish further information on the factors affecting the anisotropy of impact properties in wrought heat-treated alloy steels. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental steels were of intended base analysis: 0.30 pct C, 0.80 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Si, 2.5 pct Ni, 0.80 pct Cr, and 0.45 pct Mo. Steels were made with sulfur contents varying from 0.005 to 0.179 pct. The steels were prepared from 600-lb induction-furnace melts. Steels containing 0.020 pct or more sulfur (at meltdown) were melted from a charge of ingot iron (except for one heat): lower-sulfur steels were made from electrolytic iron. The charge consisted of ingot or electrolytic iron, ferrosilicon to give 0.10 pct Si, and ferromanganese to give 0.05 pct Mn. At meltdown, electrolytic nickel, ferromolybdenum, iron phosphide, and pyrite were added followed in sequence by ferrochromium, sili-comanganese, ferrosilicon, and ferromanganese. The slag was then removed and graphite added to give the desired carbon content. Bath temperature was adjusted to 2850°F and, when no other additions were to follow, 2 lb per ton of aluminum was added, immediately before tapping. Compositions of the experimental steels appear in Table I. Analyses are from single determinations, except sulfur which was analyzed in duplicate. A test sample (3 in. in diam by 6 in. long) and a 575-1b ingot were poured from each heat. The test sample was poured in a sand mold; the cooling rates of the test sample and the large ingot were approximately the same. Chemical analysis chips and metal lographic specimens were taken from the test samples. The ingot was 8 in. sq at the base and 9 in. sq at the top. A 5 X 5 X 6-in. sand mold hot top was completely filled in teeming the ingot. After solidification, the mold was stripped from the ingot which cooled to room temperature. Ingots were reheated to 2250"F and rolled to 1.9-in. slabs on a commercial mill. The slabs were box-cooled to room temperature. Sections of the 1.9-in. slabs were heated to 2250°F and rolled on a Battelle laboratory mill according to one of three schedules: 1) rolled straightaway to 0.5-in. plate; 2) rolled straightaway to 1.3-in. thickness, then cross rolled to 0.5-in. plate (29 pct cross rolling); or 3) cross rolled from 1.9-in. to 0.5-in.-thick plate (46 pct cross rolling). The 0.5-in.-straight- or cross-rolled plates were normalized at 1700°F for 1 hr and then water quenched from 1600°F. Plates were then tempered 2 hr at 1240°, 1170°, 1080°, or 860°F to obtain Rockwell C hardness of 25, 30, 35, and 40, respectively. Tempering was followed by quenching to room temperature to avoid temper embrittlement. Slack-quenched plates were isothermally transformed for 26 min at 800°F, quenched, and tempered 2 hr at 1170°F. Pearlitic microstructures were obtained by holding 168 hr at 1200° F, followed by quenching. Charpy V-notch specimens were taken both transverse and longitudinal to the main rolling direction, notched perpendicular to the plate surface, and tested. Some of the problems associated with the acid treatment of oil wells are related to the control of the composition of formation treating acid. One test usually made at the well site is the determination of the acid concentration. Heretofore, the concentration of the acid delivered to the well site usually has been interpreted from a hydrometer measurement of the specific gravity of the acid solution. Experience has shown that this indirect measurement of acid concentration can give erroneous results. More reliable results are, of course, obtainable by the titration method; however, this method is not easily adapted to well-site testing. To overcome these objections, a device was developed for use in the field which permits determination of the concentration of treating acid both quickly and accurately at the time of the acid treatment. Its purpose was three-fold, namely, to determine: (1) the concentration of the fresh treating acid, (2) the concentration of the spent acid returning from the well, and (3) the solubility of formation samples in treating acid. The device was designed to operate on the principle of the stoichiometric relation between the calcium carbonate—hydrochloric acid reaction and the carbon dioxide gas resulting from the reaction. By confining the carbon dioxide gas within a reaction cell of the type shown in Fig. 1, the pressure inside the cell is increased. Since the pressure is an indication of the quantity of carbon dioxide gas produced, it may be used to estimate the concentration of the acid, provided an excess of calcium carbonate is used. From information on the volume of the reaction cell, the volume of acid used, and the pressure and temperature of the gas after the completion of the reaction, the concentration of the treating acid may be computed. The reaction cell is essentially a pressure vessel equipped with a pressure gage, temperature indicator. pressure release valve, and a special sample holder. Plastic and metal construction makes the cell both rugged and acid-resistant. The sample holder is so designed that a sample of calcium carbonate (or sample of carbonate rock) can be dropped into the acid

L. S. PANYITY.-I made inquiries from the Smith and Dunn people, who are the originators of the compressed air and gas method of increasing the production of oil wells, as to how much pressure the sand will stand; that is, relative to the original rock pressure. They tell me that they have not been able to show, up to date, any pressure in a sand greater than the original pressure. I have also made 'a statement to that effect, but I am really dubious as to whether that is right, as I am not sure that you cannot get a greater pressure. However, I think that a greater pressure would be dangerous because it might cause a loss of gas. C. H. SHAW, ? MOST important of the naturalcalcium silicates is the meta¬silicate, CaSi03, known as wollastonite, after W. H. Wollaston. A large deposit of this mineral was dis¬covered some seven years ago near Code Siding, Rademacher mining dis¬trict, Kern County, Calif., the deposit being some 7500 ft. long and of an average width of 300 ft. It consists of a series of small domes striking north¬erly and southerly and with a dip of 81 ° to the south. This deposit was opened up by a series of small quarries showing a potential tonnage of 12,000,¬000 tons, allowing of cheap mining and transportation, the Southern Pa¬cific R.R. spur track being one mile north of the workings. Numerous sam¬ples taken from different points on the deposit, tested by Mr. Brinker, of the California Testing Laboratories, Los Angeles, showed an average as fol¬lows: Per Cent Silica (SiO2) 47.12 Lime (CaO) 41.72 Magnesia (MgO) 2.72 Alkalies (R,0) Trace Iron (Fe.,O,) 1.60 whereas the theoretical composition of of wollastonite, as given by William Shirley Bayley, is as follows: Silica 51.75 Lime 45.25 The tonnage and purity of this de¬posit led to investigations into its com¬mercial development. Early work es¬tablished the fact that wollastonite was ideal for the manufacture of a tough, almost unbreakable, glass similar to Pyrex. It also established the fact that wollastonite was particularly adapted for use in the manufacture of mineral wool, towards which further research was then directed. Briefly, the prin¬cipal advantages were the substantially unvarying chemical composition of the naturally occurring mineral and its characteristic of being relatively flexi¬ble and highly resilient when fused into a glass. A mineral wool produced therefrom is thus not only of highly uniform composition and color but is most desirable because of the high mechanical strength and length of the individual fibers constituting the wool. It is well known that mineral wool may be prepared by melting a suitable charge of raw material and then intro¬ducing a stream of a suitable fluid, such as air or steam, into a stream of the molten raw material. By this means the molten material is blown into threads or fibers, which are collected in a suitable chamber similar to a tun¬nel, from which they are removed from time to time or continuously. Duquesne Light Co. and CAI Consultants, Inc. conducted a demonstration program to establish permanent vegetative cover directly on acidic, deep coal mine refuse. Several plots were treated with formulas varying in soil amendment application rates and plant speak. Periodic monitoring of refuse chemistry indicated when maintenance applications of seed and soil amendments were required. To establish drainage control, the site had to be regraded. The most successful experimental formula was used as the bank for the formula applied to regraded portions of the site. Specific treatment for acidic spots has been initiated. Results of the program indicate that adequate permanent vegetation has been established.

If it had not been for the persistent cold wind, the sun blazing out of a cloudless blue sky would have made it one of those warm, idyllic early spring days which attract the socalled "snowbirds" to Northern Mexico for a vacation at this time of year. At a drill site perched on top of a rather exposed mountain we were installing a number of borehole extensometers in diamond drill holes. A Threading Problem For the uninitiated in geotechnical instrumentation, a borehole extensometer is a series of anchors installed at various depths in a borehole, each anchor being independently connected by a tensioned wire to a measuring device set in the collar of the hole. Any movement of the rock at depth is detected by the anchors and transmitted by the wires to the measuring device. Flexible plastic tubing is used as a spacer between the anchors and the measuring wires are run up the inside of the tube. At this particular site we were installing an instrument string nearly 1000 ft in length. Threading wire only 0.041 in. in diam through 1000 ft of plastic pipe is almost as difficult as getting the proverbial camel through the eye of a needle.

LOCKE, Cambridge, Mass.-In this country, we have come to think that we should use smaller size of feed in our ball-mills. I will admit that a ball-mill is not comparable to a tube-mill, as conditions may not be the same, but there we have an unusual demonstration of the advantage of a coarser feed. Further investigation along this line is going to lead to some valuable results. The authors have overcome the difficulty of this coarse feed by taking out what I would call the difficult lumps, It is not clear from the paper whether many of these difficult lumps' may not be 'reduced portions of their grinding media. H. W. HARDINGE, New York, N. Y.-The idea is not exactly new because in 1911 they used the miner to reduce the finer material. We proceeded three or four years using many tons, about 15 tons. or nearly the same proportion of ore to grinding medium. Another thing to be taken into account is the hardness of the ore being ground. In South Africa, the transportation costs must be, taken into account. They are also making progress in the method of using tube-mills and ball-mills instead of stamps. Experiments are to be conducted with 10-ft. diameter mills there, with the object of increasing the mass action and agitation which, as has been demonstrated under different circumstances, increases the overall efficiency.

THE advent of curved jaw crusher wearing plates made an approach other than segmental layout analysis desirable for prediction of capacities. For some time it had been known that the drawing board capacities of crushers using these plates had to be considerably modified by complicated experience factors to achieve agreement with results. Because these apparent capacities could be readily increased severalfold by minor crushing chamber shape changes, it was necessary that the utmost precaution be taken in predicting capacities of jaw plates modified for nonchoking, special wear characteristics, or any other reason. To this end the laboratory and field tests outlined by the author in a previous paper1 were made on Blake-type jaw crushers. The results of these tests were summarized in a simple first degree equation applicable to crushers using either straight or curved jaw plates. This equation first outlines the maximum capacity potential of a given crusher, then reduces this figure in accordance with installation circumstances by means of a realization factor. It was found subsequently that this equation, with the addition of an eccentric throw factor, is applicable to standard types of single-toggle or overhead eccentric jaw crushers as far as maximum capacity potential is concerned. However, these crushers have realization factor curves somewhat different from those outlined for the Blake type. While this paper is concerned principally with standard type single-toggle crusher capacities, the evaluation of data obtained with these machines is simplified by comparative reduction to the 10 x 7 in. Blake-type equivalents upon which the summary of the preceding paper was made. Convertibility of data from one type of crusher to the other also tends towards confirmation of both. The agreement of these data is sufficient to be considered complimentary. Consequently the feed factors, f, previously reported for Blake crushers are slightly adjusted to an average with the single-toggle crusher results. Blake-type equation: C = f.d.w.y.t.n.a.r [I] Single-toggle type equation: C = f.d.w.y.t.n.a.e.r [21 where C is the capacity in short tons per hour through the crusher, f is a feed factor, dependent upon the presence of fines in the feed, and the surface character of the jaw plates used. In the case of corrugated jaw plates it is measured from the tip of one corrugation to the bottom of the valley opposite. t is the length of jaw stroke in inches at the bottom of the crushing chamber. It is the difference between open and close-side settings. n is rpm, or crushing cycles per minute, a is the nip-angle factor. It is unity for 26" and 3 pct greater for each less nip-angle degree. A nip-angle of 20" has an a value of 1.18, and an angle of 30" has an a value of 0.88, see Fig. 1. r is the realization factor. It is unity for perfectly uniform choke feeding and usually less for actual operating conditions according to the method of feeding used and the probabilities of hang-ups involving the size of feed and crusher opening. Approximate values are given by the curves in Fig. 2. These values are further reduced by intermittent feeding, e is the throw or diameter of gyration of the single-toggle crusher eccentric in inches. As evident in Fig. 1A, variation of feed size will generally have little effect on nip-angle if both jaw plates have flat areas. Jaw plates having continuous curvature, as in Fig. 1B will have different nip-angles, depending upon the size of feed. For test work as described in this paper this effect was accounted. For general compilation of capacities for average feeds it is suggested that the nip-angle be taken at the various settings computed, at an arbitrary level, such as is indicated in Fig. 1C. Data Evaluation To bring the Blake and single-toggle type crusher capacity test results to common terms for evaluation, all data are converted to terms of 10 x 7 in. Blake-type performance at conditions of 100 lb per cu ft, 10 in. chamber width, 250 rpm, 0.65 in. stroke, 3-in. openside setting, and 18° nip-angle. (The nip-angle of the 10x7 in. Blake is 18° at 3-in. setting.) The single-toggle crusher performances are also divided by the eccentric throw to bring this effect to unity. As outlined,' laboratory and field tests made on Blake-type crushers ranging from 10 x 7 in. to 60 x 48 in. were summarized along the foregoing conditions of speed, stroke, etc. This resulted in groups of data which correspond to feeds with fines, feeds

With the workable area of coal prospected and known as to workability and quantity and sampled and tested for desired quality comes the determination of the projection and method of working. The best method will be the one supplying the greatest degree of safety, the most merchantable product, the minimum average cost per ton with the largest yield of recoverable coal. Based on coal elevations, taken at the bottom of the seam on all known outcrop exposures, prospect openings or drill holes, coal contours are made on the map to be used in developing the mining plan. The contour interval should be as close as available information will permit. For general utility in layout of mining, haulage, drainage and ventilation, a map scale of 400 ft. per in. is preferable. In mountainous sections, location of the main out- crop opening or hoisting shaft is often limited by the available railroad route and amount of land level enough for a plant site. In level country, where a tipple and hoisting shaft may be placed at will, choice of the plant site should depend on the minimum average underground haul for the total coal to be worked to the new
