The effects of radon in drillholes on gamma-ray logs have been described by L. S. Hilpert and C. M. Bunker1 Since these effects may cause drastic error in the evaluation of uranium deposits, it is useful to know the conditions under which significant amounts of radon tend to accumulate in drillholes. In the studies described here, atmospheric conditions were found to dominate in the control of the behavior of radon in drillholes in the vicinity of a uranium orebody. The site of the investigation was in McKinley County, New Mexico, about 12 miles north of Grants. Drillholes of 4 1/4-in. diam, on 25-ft and 100-ft centers, penetrate ore in dry rock at a depth of about 100 ft. A geologic log of the drillhole of primary interest is shown in Fig. 1. Gamma-ray logs revealed three zones of ore-grade mineralization in the Todilto limestone. A 6-ft zone, the lowest of the three, assayed 0.20 pct U3O8 by chemical analysis. The limestone ores in this area contain disseminated uraninite and some yellow and orange secondary minerals. Only radon"", a member of the uranium'" series, was measured in this investigation. Radon is one of the chemically inert noble gases and is radioactive by alpha particle emission with a half life of about four days. In this discussion, amounts of radon are expressed in microcuries (1 microcurie equals 37,-000 disintegrations per sec) and concentrations of radon are expressed in microcuries per liter of drillhole air. Samples of air were obtained by lowering a sampling device (Fig. 2) into a drillhole and actuating the device at the desired depth. It was then raised to the surface and the sample was transferred to a storage tube. Within two days the sample was transferred to an ionization chamber, and the activ- ity of radon and its short-lived daughter products was measured at radioactive equilibrium with a vibrating-reed electrometer. The measurements were corrected back to the time of collection and involve errors estimated generally not to exceed + 5 pct to —15 pct. Radon Behavior in a Covered Hole: Fig. 3, a typical log of radon concentration vs depth in the covered drillhole, was made by using values of radon concentration at discrete depths. Continuous logs of alpha-particle radiation in the drillholes showed that such radon logs depict the continuous variation of radon concentration with depth quite accurately. We will carry American cargoes at rates corresponding to our railroad rates-the cheapest in the world. Fast American passenger-and-cargo liners will run regularly to every port in Latin America, the Orient, Africa, Australia. Are you taking steps to use these ships to increase your own prosperity? Do you realize that American products of factory, farm and mine can be delivered to customers in foreign countries on terms which will build lasting trade? Do you realize the possibilities for bringing hack raw materials to extend your products and trade? We must all take off our coats and work to bring these American ships home to the people of every American interest and community. The manufacturer must think of customers in Latin America as being as accessible as those in the next state. The farmer must visualize ships carrying his wheat, cotton, breeding animals, dairy products and fruit to new world markets. The American boy must think of ships and foreign countries when he chooses a calling.

The US began exporting coal in the late 1800s, at first in very small quantities to Canada and, beginning in 1897 and 1898, to the east coast of South America. Shipments to European countries began on a very limited basis in 1902 and these shipments increased gradually until World War I when shipments overseas increased from 7.3 Mt/a to 20 Mt/a. After the war exports dropped as fast as they had increased and, with the exception of exports to Canada, remained at very low levels until just after World War II when the US again emerged as a major coal exporter. World War II left the coal industries of Europe in ruin. As the US was the only country able to supply large quantities of coal at reasonable prices needed for reconstruction of the European economy, the US coal exports overseas expanded rapidly to 38.6 Mt in 1947. Additionally, we shipped 23.8 Mt of coal to Canada in that year for a total export of 62.3 Mt. Unfortunately, that level was not reached again until 1957 when exports reached an all-time high of 69.3 Mt - a high that has not been reached since. Over the years the level of US coal exports has fluctuated fairly widely. Approximately 80-90% of all US coal exports are high quality metallurgical grade coal so our exports level depends directly on world-wide economic conditions and world steel production levels.

MUCH has been learned about plastic deformation behavior in crystals through the use of dislocation and slip band etchants. Slip in nickel and nickel-base alloys has previously been revealed by various etching techniques.l-5 The techniques for nickel-base super-alloys4,5 were successful only in the Udimet 700 composition in specific heat-treated conditions. The objective of this work was to develop a more generally applicable slip-band etching procedure. The nominal compositions of the alloys used in this study are listed in Table I. The low carbon Mar-M2OO alloy referred to in the text is the same as listed in Table I with the exception that the carbon content is less than 100 ppm. Mar-M200 and Udimet 700 were solutionized at 2250" and 2150°F, respectively. The aging treatment for both cast alloys was 32 hr at 1600°F and for wrought Udimet 700 was 4 hr at 1975"F, 24 hr at 1550°F, and 16 hr at 1400°F. The new slip-band etching technique consists of a chemical etch followed by a short electropolish, Table 11. Fig. l(a) shows the best result obtained on an internal section of a plastically deformed single crystal of Mar-M2OO when using a conventional slip-band etching procedure which consists of electropolishing followed by etching. Ghostlike traces corresponding to planar slip bands are observed, but the contrast between the bands and the background is weak. Fig. l(b) shows the same field using the new slip-band etching technique. After the etching step of this technique, the same ghostlike traces of Fig. l(a) are observed, but the subsequent electropolishing accentuates the slip bands and the subgrain boundaries while the rest of the matrix is being polished. Longer electropolishing obliterates the slip bands. The new slip-band etching technique makes use of the etchants and electrolytes that are normally used for a given material. Because of this, it should be possible to slip-band etch other nickel-base superal-loys by using existing etchants and electrolytes for a material and following the procedures outlined in the "Comments" section of Table 11. Pore formation is examined analytically in cellu-larly solidified single crystals, in cylindrical castings of pure metals and alloys, and in unidirectionally solidified castings. Effects are considered of fluid flow. dissolved gas, and surface tension. Experimental results show that flow through a partially solid "mushy" aluminum alloy obeys relations similar to those applicable for flow through other types of porous beds. Flow rate is proportional to the square of the fraction liquid (fL) for fL less than 0.3. Results indicate models chosen for mathematical description of pore formation in alloy solidification are valid. ONE of the solidification variables which is influential in determining mechanical properties of castings and of wrought material produced from cast ingots is porosity. This porosity may result from shrinkage, dissolved gases, or a combination of both, and may take the form of either macroscopic pores in localized areas of the casting or microporosity evenly distributed throughout large areas of the casting. In alloys which freeze over a range of temperatures some microporosity is generally found after solidification. There has been much discussion as to whether the micropores are caused primarily by shrinkage, by gas, or by a combination of both.'-3 There has, however, been little experimental or analytical work performed to delineate the relative contributions of shrinkage and gas in causing microporosity or to quantitatively describe the influence of processing variables on microporosity. Porosity other than microporosity (e.g., center line shrinkage) has also received only limited quantitative treatment.495 The aim of this work is to examine analytically the general problem of pore formation in solidification and to perform limited confirmatory experiments. Consideration is first given to shrinkage porosity in pure and nearly pure metals (shrinkage in cellular growth, centerline shrinkage in cylinders). Next, a discussion is given of formation of shrinkage-caused microporosity in unidirectional solidification and in "mushy" solidification. Finally, influences of dissolved gas and surface tension on microporosity are examined. Numerical results are given for aluminum and an aluminum alloy. Typical examples of microporosity are shown in Figs. 1 to 3, for 1) cellularly solidified aluminum, 2) sand-cast aluminum alloy, and 3) low alloy steel. SHRINKAGE POROSITY IN PURE AND NEARLY PURE METALS 1) Cellular Growth. In cellular freezing of an impure liquid, liquid grooves may exist over a considerable length of the growing crystal.6 The cross-sectional area of the grooves decreases with increasing distance from the cell tips; the root of the groove is blunt if the liquid at this point reaches eutectic composition. As a result of volume contraction during solidification, flow occurs down the groove, parallel to the growth direction; hence, there must be a pressure drop from the groove entrance to points within the groove. The geometry of the groove is simplified to that of a circular cylinder of radius r and length L, Fig. 4, L » r, and a simple and useful limiting case is obtained. This is that, in the circular cylinder freezing at constant velocity, the pressure at the root of the groove is lower than that pressure at radius r in grooves of other geometries where r decreases continuously to a lower limit at L. THE illustration below shows the design of the face of the clock to be erected as a memorial to the American engineers who gave their lives overseas in the World War. It will be placed in the tower of the library at Louvain, which has been rebuilt through contributions from America. Large clocks seldom have figures on their faces, and each hour on this one will be marked by a gold star, the four faces containing 48 stars, one for each State of the Union. Contributions toward the memorial have been received from every one of the States, and from Alaska and Hawaii as well, but additional subscriptions are invited by the Com-mittee which is arranging for the memorial.

A massive transformation, 0 —am, takes place in a number of copper-based systems where the ß phase field at high temperatures extends to compositions that are slightly less solute-rich than the limits of the a phase field that exists at lower temperatures. Consequently a solid-state transformation becomes possible that does not involve a change of composition. Within this narrow range of composition the massive am phase can be usually produced in two ways: by a fast quench from the ß phase through the a phase field, or by pulse heating into the a phase field of an undecomposed ß phase retained at room temperature by a prior quench. In the Cu-Ga system the occurrence of a massive am phase has been also observed in alloys whose composition falls outside the equilibrium a phase field1 but not in the Cu-Zn system.2 We have recently observed the occurrence of the ß — am transformation also in two silver-based systems, Ag-Zn and Ag-Cd. The a and 0 phase fields in these systems again slightly "overlap" in a narrow composition range. In the Ag-Zn system this range falls between 36.7 and 40.2 at. pct Zn, and in the Ag-Cd system between approximately 41 and 42.5 at. pct Cd. Alloys were prepared from high-purity materials and cast in quartz tubes under inert atmosphere. No significant change of composition occurred during casting. After homogenizing in the 0 phase field, small pieces of each alloy were reheated at the homogenizing temperatures for a few minutes and quenched into various media. There were examined metallographic-ally after removal of surface layers that may have suffered from contamination or from the loss of the solute element. In the Ag-Zn system extensive areas of the am phase (identified by selective etching, observation of the slip trace variants, and occurrence of twinning) were observed in a comparatively low-zinc alloy (37.8 at. pct Zn) for all quenching media employed: iced

Introduction This papers describes some of the latest improvements that have been incorporated or planned by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. to reduce operating costs and improve pellet quality. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. operates and manages mining, beneficiation, and pelletizing operations in Michigan, Canada, and western Australia. This paper deals with the grate-kiln pelletizing operations at Republic, Humboldt, Tilden, Empire, and Pioneer in Michigan, and the Adams and Sherman in Ontario, Canada. Table I characterizes each operation in regard to location, ore type, pellet capacity and date that pellets were first produced. All of the operations with the exception of Pioneer and Tilden, utilize downdraft-two-pass grate cycles of drying followed by preheating. Pioneer utilizes an all-downdraft, three-pass grate cycle which consists of three drying zones followed by the preheat zone. The Pioneer and Tilden cycles have been described previously (Lindroos and Koski, 1966; Villar and Dawe, 1975; Koski, 1977). Tilden utilizes a three-pass grate cycle with a stage of updraft drying, followed by two downdraft drying stages. Recuperation systems which supply hot gases to a drying zone from second stage cooling were designed and fur¬nished for Tilden I. Tilden II will be identical. Empire IV will also be furnished with a recuperation system. The Adams grate¬kiln system was retrofitted with a recuperation system. This paper will summarize some of the efforts that are in effect or planned for grate-kiln pelletizing systems to: (1) reduce operating and maintenance costs, (2) reduce energy requirements, (3) improve product quality, and (4) meet environmental standards.

ELASTIC constants of yttrium and eleven of the rare earth elements have been measured. This has been accomplished by measuring the propagation velocities of ultrasonic pulses. The velocity measurements were made by noting the elapsed time between an applied pulse and the appearance of successive echoes. The pulse-echo technique has become relatively common, and the basis of the measurement is outlined in several standard tests, e.g., Heuter and Bolt.1 Two important assumptions are made when using this method for the determination of elastic moduli. First, the pulse is assumed to propagate as a plane wave. To justify this assumption, the cross section of the test specimen should be large compared to the wave length of the transmitted pulse. For these measurements on the rare earth elements the minimum cross section wave length ratio was about 20. A second assumption which must be made when using polycrystalline specimens is that the grains are sufficiently numerous and randomly oriented so that the specimen may be approximated as elasti-cally isotopic. The grain size in the as-cast specimens which were used is believed to be sufficiently fine for this approximation, and the degree of preferred orientation is believed to be small. Supporting this viewpoint is the fact that elasticity measurements by the pulse-echo technique on as-cast specimens of other metals give results which are in satisfactory agreement with values obtained by other techniques. Hence, it is believed that the measured elasticity values for the rare earth elements are not apt to be seriously in error due to the assumption of elastic isotopy. The apparatus used in this determination was a modified Sperry Reflectoscope with a precisely calibrated time base circuit. Piezoelectric transducers were used both to generate the pulse and to detect the echoes. X-cut quartz crystals were used for the longitudinal modes, and Y-cut quartz crystals were used for the shear modes. Frequencies of 2.25 and 5 megacycles per sec were employed. Most of the specimens were 2.5 to 5.0 cm in length. Results Table I is a tabulation of the measured propagation velocities of longitudinal waves and of shear waves, together with densities obtained by Sped- ding, Daane, and Herrmann2 from lattice parameter measurements. The shear modulus, Poisson's ratio, and Young's modulus were calculated from the data in Table I through use of the following relationships: µ = pv32 [1] s=2-(vb/vs)2/2[1-(vb/vs)2] [2] and Y= 2µ(l+s) [3] where s is the shear modulus, Y is the Young's modulus, s is Poisson's ratio, p is the density, V0 is the longitudinal wave velocity, and v, is the shear wave velocity. The calculated quantities are shown in Table 11. Compressibility values can be computed from the relationship and the computed values may be compared with measured values obtained by Bridgman.8 Table III lists the data for such a comparison. The agreement is satisfactory, being particularly good for neodymi- um and gadolinium, poor for samarium, and intermediate for the other elements. Some variation is expected since Bridgman's measurements are isothermal, whereas the present measurements are adiabatic. In addition there may be some effect due to small variations in purity. Though most of the rare earth metals measured by Bridgman and all of the metals used in the present measurements were prepared at this laboratory, minor purity variations might exist since the samples came from different lots. Also, any imperfections such as dislocations, vacancies, voids, grain boundaries, microcracks, etc., should contribute to the volume change of a com-

The mechanical properties of 300-series stainless steels were investigated in both high-pressure hydrogen and helium environments at ambient temperatures. An auslenitic steel which is unstable with respect to formation of strain-induced a (bee) and € (hcp) mar-tensile is embrittled when plastically strained in a hydrogen environment. A stable austenitic steel is not embriltled when tested under the same conditions. The presence of hydrogen causes embrittlement at the mar-lensitic structure and a definite change in the general fracture mode from a ductile to a quasicleavage type. The embrittled martensitic facets are surrounded by a more ductile type fracture which suggests that the presence of hydrogen initiates microcracks at the martensitic structure. If a steel is unstable with respecl to fortnation of strain induced martensile, plastic deformation in a hydrogen environment will produce rapid embrittlement of a notched specimen in comparison to an unnotched one. FERRITIC and martensitic steels can be embrittled by hydrogen that has been introduced into the alloys, either by thermal or cathodic charging prior to testing.1-5 However, conflicting reports exist as to whether austenitic steels that are stable or unstable with respect to formation of strain-induced martensite can be embrittled by hydrogen.8-12 A recent investigation has shown that cathodically-charged thin foils of a stable austenitic steel can be embrittled.13 An earlier investigation of a thermally charged 18-10 stainless steel revealed a significant decrease in the ductility only at the lowest test temperature of -78°C, although strain-induced bee martensite was shown to be present in one specimen tested at ambient temperatures.' When martensitic steels are tested in a hydrogen atmosphere, they are embrittled.'4-'7 It has been observed in this Laboratory that 304L steel, which is unstable with respect to formation of strain induced martensite, forms surface cracks when plastically strained in a high-pressure hydrogen environment. Work in progress elsewhere concurrent with this investigation has also established that 304L is embrittled when tested in a high-pressure hydrogen atmosphere." The objective of this investigation was to study the effect of a high-pressure hydrogen environment on the tensile properties of a stainless steel that contained strain-induced martensite (304L) and one that did not (310). EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Notched and unnotched cylindrical specimens were machined from 304L* and 310 rods that were heat- treated at 1000°C in argon for 1 hr followed by a water quench. The chemical analyses of these steels are given in Table I. The unnotched specimens had a reduced section diameter of 0.184 & 0.001 in., a gage length of 0.7 in., and were threaded with a 0.5-in.-diam. thread on each end. The notched specimens had a reduced section diameter of 0.260 * 0.001 in. and a 0.75-in. gage length, with a 30 pct 60 deg v-notch at the center. The notch had a maximum root radius of 0.002 in. The tensile bars were fractured in a hydrogen or helium atmosphere of 104 psi at ambient temperatures. The system used for mechanically testing the specimens is to be described in detail elsewhere.19 Several specimens of each type were tested in air using an Instron testing machine. The same yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were obtained in 104 psi helium with the above system as with the conventional testing machine. Magnetic analysis was employed to determine that there was a (bee) martensite in plastically deformed 304L and that it was not present in plastically deformed 310. The magnetic technique depended on allowing the material being studied to serve as the core between a primary and secondary coil. Thus, any change in the amount of magnetic material present between the annealed and plastically deformed steels will be indicated by corresponding changes in the induced voltage in the secondary circuit." The ratio of the output signal of a nonmagnetic stainless steel to a completely magnetic maraging steel was 2000 to I. Several unnotched 304L bars tested in hydrogen were analyzed for hydrogen by vacuum fusion analysis. There was an increase in the hydrogen content to approximately 2 ppm for the specimens tested in hydrogen, as compared to less than 1 ppm for the as-received material. Several thin sections cut from notched areas of 304L specimens tested in hydrogen and containing the fracture surface contained approximately 1.5 ppm H. The accuracy of these determinations was estimated to be ± 50 pct.
