Fe-V alloys with small percentages of vanadium show no deviations from Sieverts' Law up to P~, = 1 atm in the 1600º to 1750ºC region. At somewhat under 8 pct V and up to at least 20pct V, at 1604" and 1661 °C, nitrogen absorption follows Sieverts' Law at low Pn2 values, but deviates from this law beyond critical values of pn2, due to formation of a nitrzde phase of approximately VN composition. The behavior below these solubility limits can be described at all temperatures by the equations: RAO and parlee1 suggested that the nitrogen absorption curve for liquid iron alloys takes the general form shown in Fig. 1 when an alloy nitride precipitate is formed. They showed that the precipitation of 6 titanium nitride from liquid Fe-Ti alloys follows this general scheme and dealt with the general theory involved. Recently, Evans and Pehlke2 reported their research on the precipitation of aluminum nitride from liquid Fe-A1 alloys. Fountain and Chipman's recent paper3 on the precipitation of boron nitride from solid solution contains a fine example of the analogous behavior which they have been studying in the solid state. Researches on the absorption of nitrogen by liquid Fe-V alloys have been described by various authors.1,4-7 Most of this work has been confined to fairly low vanadium concentrations and rather high temperatures because of difficulties variously described as, formation of surface scums, bridging, and so forth. This behavior and the rough thermo- dynamic calculations made by chipman,8 over eleven years ago, indicated that excessively high vanadium concentrations should not be required for vanadium nitride precipitation. It seemed desirable to look for and study this precipitation in order to fill out the thermodynamically interesting nitrogen absorption data on these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The general method used was essentially the same as employed by Rao and parlee,1 in which a Sieverts type of apparatus was used and the precipitation of the nitride detected by the "break-point" in the Sieverts' Law line, and by the visual observation of the formation of the new phase on the surface of the melt. There were, however, a few differences in apparatus and technique as described below. The oil manometer used by Rao and parlee' to measure low partial pressures of nitrogen was not employed. The present authors sought to avoid as much as possible the exposure of the liquid alloy to low total pressures of gas during the 6 to 10 hr long runs because of the heavy iron evaporation-loss errors involved. This was achieved, partly by keeping evacuation times to a minimum with fast pumping but largely by the use of two burettes, one for argon and one for nitrogen, and using them to equilibrate the alloy with mixtures of argon and nitrogen rather than nitrogen alone. The need for mechanized drilling to decrease mining costs has resulted in the development of the jumbo from column-and-bar drill carriages to hydraulically controlled jib jumbos. Resultant savings from use of improved jumbos have been high enough usually to retire the machinery investment within a year. The jib jumbo unit has been applied successfully to development and preparation programs and flat-bedded stopes, and an even wider field is forecast for its use.

OF the many items of information necessary to the successful management of the blast-furnace, few are more important than knowledge of the location and movement of the stock-line: whether the furnace is full and has. been kept so; whether the stock is settling regularly or slipping; and, if slipping, how often it has slipped, at what times, and how far at each time. To obtain these data, a man is sometimes stationed at the top of a. pair of mechanically-filled furnaces, simply to watch and gauge them by hand in the old-fashioned way. - A more recent practice is the suspension of test-rods from ropes leading over pulleys to the ground-level, where the ropes are wound on small drums with graduated peripheries and provided with crank-handles, whereby the skip-man or some other person can quickly and conveniently gauge the position of the stock-line in the furnace. I believe the credit for this great improvement belongs to Messrs. McClure & Phillips of Sharon, Pa., who were, as far as I know, the first to apply it, and who have a patent for it. The valuable indications gained by application of the Uehling pyrometer to the down-comer are Dot to be ignored; but the information thus furnished is somewhat indi¬rect, and there is no scale for the translation of "top-tempera¬tures " into " feet down." Moreover, this apparatus as a whole is delicate, and the cost of its installation and maintenance is high. If the record furnished by the Uehling pyrometer is not in the most desirable form, the test-rods, on the other hand, give no record at all, except through the memory, or notes of a man who, to say the least, is not gauging continuously, and who may omit to report an improperly low stock-line, if it be due to a fault of his own.

DURING the past twelve years the iron and steel industry has made a major advance through the development of the continuous wide strip rolling mill. So far-reaching have been the results that not only has a better product been sold at a lower price but this improvement in quality has permitted manufacturers of products using steel to make important savings in the cost of fabrication. The net result has been a better product at lower cost to the consumer without reduction in either employment or of wages paid within the industry. That is why the iron and steel industry is proud of its attainment. Being a basic industry of strategic importance, such an advance in technology has had its effects on our internal economy, our standard of living, and our industrial power as a nation in both peace and wartime.

A study of certain fundamental characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives has been made. A discussion is given of the factors affecting the life of the cartridge and the relation between explosive strength and oxygen content. The explosive properties of L.O.X. cartridges packed with a variety of lampblacks, gas blacks, and other materials have been experimentally determined by means of the ballistic pendulum, Bichel gage, and measurement of the rate of detonation. DURING the past year, the Bureau of Mines has carried on an investigation of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) to supplement the work described in previous publications.' The present paper gives results of the first part of this work, which was a laboratory investigation of the properties of typical combustibles used in L.O.X., and the relation of these properties to the absorption and retention of oxygen by the explosives and their explosive characteristics. No attempt will be made to describe the development of liquid-oxygen explosives, because this phase of the subject has been well covered. The L.O.X. cartridge consists of a paper wrapper filled with an absorbent combustible material that is saturated with liquid oxygen by soaking it therein. On July 15, 16, and 17, 1918, through the good offices of Secretary Stoughton, and the courtesy of War Department officials, Columbia Section was able to secure a series of moving pictures which were presented under the auspices of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association.. The title was "The Way Out," representing the activities of individuals who had lost an arm, a leg, or both, yet whose apparent misfortunes were made the stepping stones to advancement in various human activities. The exhibitions were given at Natatorium Park in the evening, each of the three performances being attended by 1000 per-sons. Later the films were shipped to Kellogg, Idaho, where they were shown in the principal playhouse one evening to a full house. On July 31, 1918, the Columbia Section participated in the luncheon and other entertainment in honor of Alfred D. Flinn, Secretary of the Engineering Council, who made a trip through the country to meet different classes of engineers, members of the National Societies, for whom he had a message. The entertainment was under the auspices of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association, Mr. Peter Mogensen presiding. The luncheon was held in the Elizabethan Room, Davenport Hotel, at noon, 35 engineers being present, of whom about one-third were our members.

Demand fob Motor Fuel, 1936 During the year just closed the domestic demand for gasoline exceeded 481 million barrels. This compares with 434,810,000 bbl. consumed during 1935 and indicates an increase of 10.46 per cent. Export shipments amounted to 27,831,000 bbl. while in 1935 they totaled 30,613,000 bbl. Total demand, therefore, was 509,422,000 bbl., or 9.16 per cent above the 465,423,000 bbl. of 1935. Following are the figures for several years: Already we are supplying gasoline domestically and as foreign shipments at a rate almost 25 per cent greater than our low level of 1933. Before giving figures for 1937, I should like to spend a moment or two in discussion of gasoline inventories, from the point of view of minimum working stocks and other requirements and of probable actual levels. SINCE Cahn's¹ paper on plastic deformation in orthorhombic (a) uranium an increasing amount of work is to be expected on orientation of single crystals and preferred orientation in this metal. It would seem desirable to have a table of angles between crystallographic planes (hkl) and (HKL). Table I shows these angles as distances from (loo), (0l0), and (00l), and in Fig. 1 as a standard (001) stereographic projection. Only the locations of poles whose diffracting planes produce Cu Ka reflections up to 0 = 70.5" (i.e. (154) ) are given." The relative reflection of these planes are represented by circle diameters. It is hoped that the projection may also be used in making inverse pole figures, originally suggested by Harris.' Values of 4 were calculated from the expression hH kK 1L cos = hH/a²+kK/b²-lL/c² where the lattice parameters a, b, c, and the spac-ings d were taken from the work of Jacob and Warren." (They report a = 2.852 kX (2.8578 A), b = 5.865 kX (5.8768 A), c = 4.945 kX (4.9550 A).) INTEREST in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. Hearings were held in Washington, D. C., Pocatello, Ida., Wilson Dam, Ala., Knoxville, Tenn., and Lakeland, Fla. The resulting testimony, when published, comprised a volume of 1182 pages.1 At the earlier hearings held in Washington and Idaho the seeming disparity between the great reserves of the West and the smaller reserves in the East led to some suggestions as to the desirability of curtailing or even prohibiting the exportation of phosphate rock so that eastern producers, becoming alarmed, cooperated in making available for the use of the committee information hitherto closely guarded. This information has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,2 some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,3 of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,4 of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered. Thermodynamic information on the solubility of hydrogen in exothermic metals is limited. Thus, the overall solubility decreased as the temperature rose, which suggests the heat of solution of hydrogen in the metal is negative; yet the terminal solubility in the metal phase increased, which suggests an endothermic reaction. A thermodynamic analysis, therefore, was made of the several equilibria involved when hydrogen dissolved in the metal. Equations were derived expressing the solubility, terminal solubility, and decomposition pressures of hydrogen in terms of the heat, entropy, and free energy of solution of hydrogen in the given phase. The relations between the thermodynamic functions for the a-zirconium and 8-hydride phase were developed. The thermodynamic quantities were determined experimentally by the measurement of the decomposition pressures over a broad composition and temperature range. Two new methods of analyzing the experimental data were developed for determination of the terminal solubility. STUDIES', ' of the impact strength of zirconium at room temperature indicated that small quantities of hydrogen, of the order of 10 parts per million, embrittles the metal. Micrographic' and X-ray diffraction' studies showed this embrittlement to result from the precipitation of a second phase upon slow cooling. These studies suggested that the terminal solubility of hydrogen in the metal phase increased with increase of temperature. This behavior appeared to contradict the effect of temperature on exothermic hydrogen occluders such as zirconium. For these metals, the solubility of hydrogen should decrease with increase of temperature. Before these facts could be understood, a thorough analysis of the several equilibria was essential. It was the purpose of this paper to consider the several equilibria involved when hydrogen was reacted with zirconium from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. Since the overall solubility of hydrogen in the metal has been considered by a number of workers, it was proposed to study the composition range 0 to 6 atomic pct H in detail. Literature Schwartz and Mallett' determined the terminal solubilities of hydrogen in the metallic phase from diffusion studies. They extrapolated concentration-penetration curves to the boundary between the solid solution phase and the hydride phase at the surface. Their results showed values of 2.6 atomic pct at 400°C and 5.2 atomic pct at 500°C. Extrapolations of the data to room temperature suggested very low values for the terminal solubilities. This study confirmed the hydrogen embrittlement results and indicated that the terminal solubilities increased as the temperature was raised. The solution of hydrogen in zirconium over the complete concentration range was studied by Hall, Martin, and Rees3 and by others. The results showed that hydrogen was absorbed up to a maximum composition of 66 atomic pct or ZrH This composition represented the t-hydride phase. The maximum amount of hydrogen absorbed increased with pressure and decreased with temperature. Due to this temperature behavior, zirconium was classed as an exothermic occluder." In 1930 Hägg studied the crystal structures of the Zr-H alloys over a broad composition range. Four hydride phases were found. However, the range of homogeneity of the several phases was not studied. Gulbransen and Andrew" recently studied the phase diagram of this system by X-ray diffraction methods and by a thermodynamic method based on decomposition pressure measurements. The results showed that only two hydride phases existed for low temperatures, the 6 and the .-phases of Hagg.' Both phases had broad regions of homogeneity. The lower limit of the two-phase region of a and d-phases suggested a terminal solubility of 4 atomic pct at 500°C. This value was in agreement with the results of Schwartz and Mallett.' A problem often encountered is the provision of materials which have impurity contents below a certain specified level. This problem is in some cases solved by making use of the segregation of the impurity with respect to the liquid and solid states of the material: an ingot of the material is subjected to directional solidification and the ends of the ingot. which are richer in solutes which respectively raise and lower the melting point of the solvent, are removed. An important extension of this process is the zone-refining process invented by pfann,' in which molten zones are passed successively along the length of an ingot and displace solutes towards the ends. Pfann's process is particularly appropriate in cases for which the segregation coefficient k does not differ greatly from unity, or when the impurity content must be kept extremely low (-=,6 atom fraction); it is widely used, particularly in the purification of materials for use in semiconductor electronic devices. It is the purpose of this paper to investigate theoretically the efficiency of the above refining processes; that is! we determine the most economic method of attaining a given yield of solvent of specified purity, taking into account the variables of the process. One variable of interest is the effective value of the segregation coefficient. which depends on the rate of movement of the liquid-solid interface and on the degree of stirring in the liquid; in addition to this, in the zone-refining process we are also interested in the choice of zone length for most efficient operation. A mathematical determination is made here of the lengths of successive molten zones which give, for an initially uniform distribution, the most efficient removal of a solute of arbitrary distribution coefficient. In order to be able to give a quantitative treatment of efficiency, we first define figures of merit applicable to a given distribution of solute. FIGURE OF MERIT Let an ingot of length L contain a distribution y(x) of solute: we confine our discussion to mono-tonic distributions, in order to avoid inconsistencies in the subsequent analysis. The first moments of the distribution about the origin and x = L are respectively L F = hy{x)dx [I] G = f(L -x)y(x)dx = YoL2-F, [21 where yoL is the total amount of solute present. This brief resume of the events transpiring in Mexico, culled from the daily New York newspapers since the last Bulletin went to press, does not show any degree of improvement in the situation. U. S. WITHDRAWS ARMY FROM MEXICO The American invasion of Mexico lasted less than 24 hours. The troops which crossed the Rio Grande June 15 to put a stop to the firing that was causing death and injury in El Paso were back in their billets on the American side of the border the next night. They had broken up the battle between Villa rebels and the Carranza garrison and driven the rebel forces headlong out of Juarez and into the hills. The Carranza Consul, Garcia, and Gen. Francisco Gonzales are reported by American officials to be pessimistic, if not indignant, at the swift reprisals made by the Americans against the stray shots which were falling in El Paso during the Villa attack on Juarez. In announcing his action in ordering Americans into Mexico Brigadier General Erwin in a formal statement said he had done-so to prevent the indiscriminate firing into El Paso by rebel soldiers, endangering the lives of Americans. "But on no account were they to undertake an invasion into Mexico," continued the statement. Americans with interests in the vicinity of Chihuahua are alarmed lest Villa, smarting under the defeat administered his troops by the American forces, should make a campaign of destruction. General Candido Aguilar, President Carranza's confidential ambassador to the United States, issued to the press, on June 17, a formal statement that "the government and people of Mexico consider as a violation of Mexican sovereignty the crossing of United States soldiers into Mexican territory" and expressing the hope ?that the situation created by the latest occurrences in Juarez will be satisfactorily adjusted between the two countries." Discussion of Mexican affairs was evoked in both houses of Congress by the crossing of the Rio Grande by American troops.

HENRY A. VEZIN, Denver, Colo. (communication to the Secretary, February, 1897): I have read Mr. Austin's paper with considerable interest, more especially as the designing and study of such works have been an attractive occupation for me during the last twenty-five years. Mr. Austin says that a " plant on a terraced site has generally been considered the most advantageous," and also that " many advocate a level site," while he himself " is disposed to advocate a modification of the latter plan, utilizing an extended surface with a moderate slope."* Among the advocates of the terraced sites as against level ones, I do not recollect ever meeting a metallurgist who had even made an attempt to plan his works for level ground, or who had, in a lucid interval, figured how much he gained or lost by one or the other method. The average metallurgist starts with the assumption that it is rational to conduct his material down hill because its movement is aided by gravity, while to elevate ore or furnace-material by machinery he vaguely believes to be not alone wrong in principle, but also unnecessarily expensive. THERE can be little doubt in the mind of anyone of the great interest which has been provoked in the mining and petroleum industry by the com-paratively new geophysical methods of prospecting, after the sessions at this year's meeting of the Institute. Not only were the sessions very well attended but every¬one seemed most attentive. Although the discussion was somewhat limited in general, that may well be at-tributed to the newness of the subject. Two sessions on this subject were planned originally, but these gave insufficient time for the presentation of all the papers prepared and a third session was abso-lutely necessary. The first meeting dealt entirely with the gravity methods and was completed in the scheduled time owing to the fact that but two of the five papers listed were read. The second session was devoted to magnetic and electrical methods, the completion of which had to be carried over into the third period of geophysics. The first session on geophysical prospecting, and in-cidentally the first scheduled Institute meeting devoted entirely to this subject, was most appropriately opened by E. L. DeGolyer, the chairman of the session. It was through the efforts of Mr. DeGolyer that the first gravity work, as applied to prospecting, was under-taken in this country. Again most appropriately, the first paper presented was given by Donald C. Barton, who carried on the first work with the Eötvös torsion balance in America and aided materially in its development. A subject, the theory of which is so difficult to understand as it is generally presented, was so clearly illustrated and ex-plained by the speaker that even a novice could grasp the fundamentals. Dr. Barton, in showing actual re-sults obtained in torsion balance surveys with the in-terpretation of the sane and later drilling records, was free in stating that there are many limitations to the field in which this and the other geophysical instruments may be successfully employed. This paper called for considerable discussion relative to the application of the torsion balance to gravity surveys over various types of structures. During the course of this discus-sion a very important point was emphasized by the chairman, namely, that for successful application of any or all of the scientific methods of prospecting, a back-ground of experience is absolutely necessary to serve as a basis for further work. This can only be secured by contributions from the results of actual prospecting work.

Kenneth A. Moon (U.S. Army Materials Research Agency)—The authors are to be congratulated for a very interesting and valuable paper. Their discussion of the structural implications of the results shown in their Fig. 5, however, requires a small correction. The model of Speiser and Spretnak with 0 = 1 and z' = 2 is perfectly reasonable for the Ti-O a phase, but Eq. [3] is valid only for solutions sufficiently dilute that the number of empty sites excluded by more than one filled site is negligible. The composition at which intrinsic saturation occurs therefore cannot be deduced from Eq. [3], but but must be decided by consideration of the structural details of the phase in question. In this case, intrinsic saturation is expected not at the composition Ti3O but at Ti2O, because Ti2O has the anti-Cd structurel4 for which each filled octahedral site has two nearby empty sites, one in the hexagonal plane immediately above it, and one in the similar plane below it. The other two models, with ?=1/3 and 1/2, imply a distinction between octahedral sites in pure titanium which is not easy to justify. The problem of extending Speiser's and Spretnak's treatment in a general way to more concentrated solutions will be the subject of a forthcoming publication by the writer. M. T. Hepworth and R. Schuhmann, Jr. (authors' reply)—The authors wish to thank Dr. Moon for calling to their attention the paper by Holmberg which presents the results of X-ray studies of Ti-O solutions ranging from 0 to 33 at. pct 0 and quenched from various annealing temperatures between 400" and 1800°C. Within these ranges, Holmberg found three types of phases: 1) At high oxygen contents (above 25 at. pct) and low annealing temperatures, he found the anti-Cd(OH)2 structure referred to by Dr. Moon. In this structure each titanium atom is in contact with 3 oxygens and each oxygen is in contact with 6 titaniums, the "available" oxygen sites corresponding to every other layer of octahedral sites in the titanium matrix. The limiting composition is Ti2O. However, this anti-Cd(OH)2 structure was not observed for samples containing 25 at. pct 0 or less. 2) For the specimen containing 25 at. pct 0 annealed at 400°C an ordered Ti3O structure was observed. This structure is related to the anti-Cd(OH)2 structure but differs from it by providing only two oxygens adjacent to each titanium atom and thus is consistent with the model represented by Eq. [5] in our paper, with 6 = 1/3, z' = 0. 3) For dilute solutions and for more concentrated solutions annealed at higher temperatures, the structure corresponds to that of the metal with random distribution of oxygens among all the octahedral sites. Thus, it is interesting to observe that the thermo-dynamic indications of ordering in the vicinity of Ti3O can now be supported qualitatively at least by Holmberg's X-ray evidence of the existence of an ordered phase of the composition Ti3O. That is, for solutions with oxygen contents close to that of Ti3O, both the thermodynamic data and the X-ray data are more consistent with models based on the ordered structure of Ti3O than they are with the model which Dr. Moon suggests corresponding to "intrinsic saturation" at Ti2O.
