In a previous paper,1 an experimental study of nitrogen dissolved in a cold-rolled ad heat-treated, low-carbon steel at 300° to 450°C yielded the equilibrium solubility relations and the concentrations of the two types of deject sites involved. In this paper, the probable identities of the defects that absorb nitrogen are restricted from the available evidence to screw dislocatioms for B sites, and to either micro crack surfaces or edge In a previous paper.' we reported an experimental study of the excess nitrogen solubility in a low-carbon steel produced by a combination of plastic deformation and nonrecrystallizing heat treatment. The concentrations of the defect sites that absorb the excess nitrogen were measured in terms of their capacities for nitrogen. Also measured were the equilibria of nitrogen distribution among the sites. Several problems and questions arise from these measurements. We should like a physical identifi- dislocations for A sites. The concentrations of these defects in experimental steel specimens are estimated from the concentrations of defect sites. finally, the influence of chemical composition upon the nitrogen-trapping defects—the relative numbers generated in deformation, the relative numbers surviving as temperature is raised, the apparent numbers observed, and the distribution equilibria-is discussed. cation of the defects involved and of the two kinds of nitrogen-absorbing sites, called A and B types, upon those defects; the concentrations of the defects themselves could then be computed. We should also like to know how exclusively the findings apply to the "X steel" used in the experiments and to what extent they apply to cold-rolled steel given no subsequent treatment. By considering the data already given, together with results from a few specific tests which will be reported as they are invoked, we are able to eliminate some interpretations altogether and to secure an acceptable though limited interpretation from among the remaining possibilities.

The direct determination of the stabilized performance behavior of low capacity, slowly stabilizing gas wells is extremely time-consuming and wasteful of gas. From both field experience and theoretical considerations, a test procedure has been evolved by which the stabilized hack pressure behavior of such gas wells can he predicted without having to revert to long time flow tests. The method consists of using the isochrona1 test procedure to establish the slope of the back pressure curve, "n", and the short time variation of the performance coeficient, "C", with time. From this short time transient flow data and theoretical considerations, the value of C at large times can he established. By assuming the radius of drainage of a well to be half the distance between wells, one can calculate the stabilization time for various well spacing patterns. Once the stabilization time for a given .spacing has been determined, the value of C can be calculated and the stabilized back-pressure curve can he. establbrhed. The calculated perfortnance coefficient as a function of tinze was cotnpared to the experintentally measured values for a number of gas wel1.e. The deviation of the calc~*lated from the cxperimental res1tlt.s vary depending on the set of short time experimental points used to evabrate the parcrttzeters of the equation. The longer the tirne far the flow test data user1 in the calculations, the better was the agreement with the experimental results. The time necessary to obtain this data from well tests varies consitlerably, depending on the physical natrcre oj the rt3scrvoir under consideratiot~. INTRODUCTION For many years, the U. S. Bureau of Mines Monograph 7' has served as a guide for testing and evaluating the performance of gas wells by means of the back-pressure method. The back-pressure performance of a gas well is expressed by the following equation: Q~ CW-W.........(I) where the characteristics of the back-pressure equation are determined by C, the performance coefficient, and n, the exponent which corresponds to the slope of the straight line when Q and {P* - PN2) are plotted on logarithmic paper. Q is gas flow rate at standard conditions, and P, and P, are equalized and flowing bottom-hole pressures, respectively. Prior to the development of the back-pressure tcst, the "open flow" capacity method of testing a well was common. By this method, the wells were flowed wide open to the air and the flow rate measured. Such procedure was wasteful of gas and did not provide information on the deliverability of the gas to the pipe line. Monograph 7 Procedure The back-pressure method of testing wells was developed to overcome these shortcomings. Although much has been learned regarding the laws of the flow of gas through porous formations, the original development of the back-pressure relationship was based entirely on empirical methods. The back-pressure behavior provides the engineer with information essential in predicting the future development of a field. It permits him to calculate the deliverability of gas into a pipe line at predetermined line pressures, to design and analyze gas gathering lines, to determine the spacing and number of wells to he drilled during the development of a field to meet gas purchasers' requirements, and to solve many other technical and economic problems. As described in Monograph 7, the flow-after-flow method of back-pressure testing, when applied to fast stabilizing and usually high capacity wells, correctly characterized the behavior of the well. However, as the value of the gas at the wellhead increased, small capacity gas wells having slow rates of stabilization became economically operable. The flow-after-flow method of testing could not be used to describe the behavior of these slowly stabilizing wells. The procedure of Rawlins and Shellhardtl for establishing the back-pressure behavior of a gas well was based on the rcquirement that the data be obtained under stabilized flow conditions; that is, that C is constant and does not vary with time. C depends on the physical properties of the reservoir, the location, extent and geometry of the drainage radius, and the properties of the flowing fluid. In a highly permeable formation, only a very short period of time is required for the well to reach a stabilized condition, and, consequently, the requirements for the test procedure described in Monograph 7 are met. Structures produced upon solidification of the eu-tectic composition (33 wt pct Cu) aluminum copper alloy have been examined as a function of freezing rate dfs /d? , the rate of change of fraction solid (fs) with time (8). Slow (dfs/d? = 0.0016 sec-1), intermediate (dfs/d? = 0.02 sec-1) and rapid (dfs/d? = 0.4 to 7.30 sec-1) freezing rates were used. The lamellar Al-Cual2 eutectic is arranged in the form of rod-shaped colonies at rapid freezing rates. The colonies are aligned parallel to the direction of heat flow, whereas the lamellae within the colonies are aligned at various angles, as high as 90 deg, to the direction of heat flow. The colony spacing (C) is proportional to the square root of inverse freezihg rate. The relationship is C = 15.5(dfs/d?)-1/2 where C is in µ and 8 is in sec. The ratio of colony spacing to lamellar spacing is greater than 20.0 and increases with a decrease in the freezing rate. A duplex dendritic structure is produced at intermediate freezing rates. A fine lamellar eutectic is arranged within the dendrites (exhibiting side branches at an angle close to 60 deg from the main stem) and a coarse irregular eutectic appears in the interdendritic regions. The duplex eutectic structure is also produced at slow freezing rates. However, at slow freezing rates there is a Platelat of CuAl2, along the center of the main stem of each dendrite and the other lamellae are arranged perpendicular to the central platelet. THE eutectic between CuA12 and a! aluminum has been reported to freeze in a lamellar form by several workers.'-3 chadwick4 has measured the interlamel-lar spacing as a function of growth rate. Kraft and Albright2 have reported on irregularities in the lamellar structures, and have proposed growth models which account for the formation of faults during solidification. In certain instances the lamellar eutectic has been found to exist in colonies. The colony formation315 has been attributed to the breakdown of a planar liquid-solid interface due to rejection of impurities. The aim of the present work is to study the structures produced from the eutectic aluminum-copper alloy under relatively fast solidification rates, such as encountered in casting and welding operations. The solid-liquid interface presumably remains planar under conditions of slow unidirectional freezing which produce lamellae aligned parallel to the direction of heat flow. The local growth velocities are the same over the entire interface and are equal to the rate of growth of the all-solid region. The spacing between the eutectic lamellae is inversely proportional to the square root of the growth rate of the all-solid region. Under the freezing conditions used in the present study, the solid-liquid interface is cellular or dendritic and the local growth velocities are different in the different regions of the interface. The relationship between the growth rate of the all solid region and the local growth velocities varies with the location and the shape of the interface. The growth rate of the all-solid region is, therefore, an inadequate parameter to describe the eutectic micro-structures which depend upon the local growth velocities. For this reason the structures have been examined as a function of freezing rate, dfs/d?, where fs is the fraction solidified at time 0. The freezing rate was varied by a factor of 4000. The relationship between the freezing rate, dfs/d?, and the growth velocit of the all solid region depends upon the specimen geometry and the shape of the interface. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The A1-33 pct Cu alloy used throughout this study was made in an induction furnace, using electrolytic copper and aluminum of commercial purity (99.7 pct), the primary impurities being silicon (0.12 pct), iron (0.14 pct), and zinc (0.02 pct). Three ranges of freezing rates were investigated: 1) A spectrum of rapid freezing rates (ranging from 0.40 to 7.30 sec-1) was obtained in arc deposits made on 2-in. thick cast plates of the eutectic alloy. The arc was operated at constant power and was made to travel at constant velocity on the surface of the plate that was in contact with the chill surface during solidification. The pool of liquid metal formed under the moving tungsten arc solidified rapidly by heat extraction through the unmelted plate. Conditions of unidirectional heat flow were achieved near the fusion zone interface, especially in the center of the arc deposits. The great advantage of the arc technique is that rapid cooling and freezing rates can be varied in a qualitative way. The correlation between the arc parameters and the solidification rate is given by the following relationship:6-8

THIS discussion is based on statistical manipulation and evaluation of operating data from several commercial blast furnaces which include rather wide variations in practice. We are concerned here mainly with the effect of manganese on sulphur elimination under operating conditions in commercial blast furnaces, but this effect can be outlined more clearly by including certain other variables such as silicon in iron and slag basicity, which are all in part interrelated. Real progress in understanding all of the smelting-zone reactions in this process requires more laboratory studies of slag-metal melts similar to those in the blast furnace, with careful control of oxygen pressure. Such experimental work is very difficult, however, and in the meantime, with the present scarcity of more fundamental data, such statistical trends and correlations as can be obtained from commercial furnace operating records may help in choosing laboratory test conditions as well as adding to our knowledge of operating procedures. We do not know just why the furnace data are apparently so irregular that statistical treatment of large numbers is needed to obtain accurate trends. It is partly caused, no doubt, by the many simultaneous variables present, but there are perhaps also such factors as: (I) the con- tinual swings up and down so characteristic of the process; (2) difficulty of accurate sampling of co-existing phases, as well as (3) the presence of both equilibrium and rate factors as a result of the fast driving of the process. In desulphurization, for example, the flow of thin layers of slag and metal over solid coke surfaces, plus the contact between droplets of iron falling through the slag layer in the hearth, would lead one to expect a close approach to equilibrium. On the other hand, most of the critical part of sulphur removal may occur in a short time and distance below the tuyeres with perhaps an accompanying decrease in oxygen pressure and the concurrent reduction of much of the silicon and manganese, so its degree of approach to equilibrium may be quite variable. Probable Chemistry of Desulphurization Since there is little evidence that sulphur atoms in the iron solution are aasociated to any appreciable extent in molecules such as MnS, the transfer from slag to metal and back again can be written:* (FeS) ? [FeS], [I] hence the following reactions seem most probable in the slag phase, (FeS) + (CaO) ? (CaS) + (FeO), [2] and, (FeS) + (MnO) ? (MnS) + (FeO). 131

Amorphous adherent filnzs of silicon dioxide have been deposited on silicon substrates by the oxidation of silane at temperatures ranging from 650 to 1050C. Various diluents (argon, nitrogen, hydrogen) were used to suppress the formation of SiO2 in the gas phase. Deposition rates of the oxide were determined over the temperature range in question as functions of' re-actant flow rates. Etch rate studies were used for a cursory comparison of structural properties of deposited and thermally grown oxides. From electrical evaluation of metal-insulator-silicon capacitors it was determined that the interface charge density of deposited films is similar go that of dry-oxygen-grown films in the 850° to 1050 C temperature range. Deposited films exhibit several ionic instability effects which differ in detail from those reported for thermal oxides. Stable passivating films of silicon nitride over deposited oxides appear to be practical for use in silicon planar device fabrication. Such films can be prepared under temperature conditions which have less effect on substrate impurity distributions than in the case of grown oxides. AMORPHOUS silicon dioxide (silica) is compatible with silicon in electrical properties and is the most widely used dielectric in silicon devices at present. Silica films can be prepared by the oxidation of silicon or deposited on silicon or other substrate surfaces by chemical reactions or vacuum techniques. The ability of thermally grown silicon dioxide films to passivate silicon surfaces forms one of the practical bases of the planar device technology. Properly produced and treated films of grown SiO 2 can have low densities of interface charge (-1 X 10" charges per sq cm) and can be stable as regards fast migrating ionic sgecies. 1 To maintain these properties, even with an otherwise hermetically sealed ambient, the Sia layers must be at least l000 A thick. Such thicknesses require oxidation in dry oxygen for periods of 7.8 hr at 900°C or 2 hr at 1000°C. Although oxidation in steam or wet oxygen can reduce these times to 17 and 5 min, the resulting oxides must be annealed to produce acceptable levels of interface charge., Oxidation or annealing involving moderate to high temperatures for extended periods of time can be undesirable. Under some conditions, there can be changes in the distribution of impurities within the underlying substrate. A chemical deposition technique using gaseous am-bients is particularly attractive and flexible for preparing oxide films. With a wide range of deposition rates available, films can be produced under condi- tions of time and temperature less detrimental to impurity distributions in the silicon than in the case of thermal oxidation. The pyrolysis of alkoxysilanes, the hydrolysis of silicon halides, and various modifications of these reactions are most commonly used for the deposition of silica films.3 Silica films obtained in this manner are likely to be contaminated by the by-products of the reaction, organic impurities, or hydrogen halides. The use of the oxidation of silane for the deposition process has been reported recently.4 The deposition of silica films on single-crystal silicon substrates by the oxidation of silane in a gas flow system has been studied in this work. The deposition variables studied were the crystallographic orientation of the substrate surface, the substrate temperature, and the nature of the diluent gas. The electrical charge behavior of Si-SiO2-A1 structures prepared under various conditions was investigated by capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements of metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) capacitors. The experimental approaches and results are discussed in this paper. 1) DEPOSITION OF SILICA FILMS The overall reaction for the oxidation of silane is: The equilibrium constants of this reaction in the temperature range 500° to 1500°K, calculated from the JANAF thermochemical data,= are shown in Fig. 1. In addition to the large equilibrium constants, the oxidation of silane is also kinetically feasible at room temperature and above. However, the strong reactivity of silane toward oxygen tends to promote the nucleation of silica in the gas phase through homogeneous reactions, and the deposition of this silica on the substrate would yield nonadherent material. The formation of silica in the gas phase can be reduced by using low partial pressures of the reactants. Argon, hydrogen, and nitrogen were used as diluents in this work. 1.1) Experimental. The deposition of silica films by the oxidation of silane was carried out in a gas flow system using an apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 2. Appropriate flow meters and valves were used to control the flow of various reactants, i.e., argon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and silane. Semiconductor-grade silane, argon of 99.999 pct minimum purity, oxygen of 99.95 pct minimum purity, and nitrogen of 99.997 pct minimum purity, all purchased from the Matheson Co., were used without further purification. In several instances, a silicon nitride film was deposited over the silica film. This was achieved by the nitridation of silane with ammonia using anhydrous ammonia of better than 99.99 pct purity supplied by the Matheson CO.' The reactant mixture of the desired composition was passed through a Millipore filter into a horizontal water-cooled fused silica tube of 55 mm

The results of studies of areal sweepout behavior in nine-spot injection patterns are presented in this paper. The ratio of the production rates of the two types of producing wells in a nine-spot pattern is considered in its effect on breakthrough. A model study was used to develop a method to predict the production histories of both side and corner wells and to develop the production history of the pattern or the field. INTRODUCTION The importance of areal sweepout behavior in injection operations has been recognized for a number of years. We now know that the fraction of a reservoir which will be reached by an injected fluid is a function of the geometric arrangement of the production and injection wells and of the mobility ratio of the fluids. Of these two, the mobility ratio (which is a measure of the relative ease with which the oil and the injected fluid can move through the reservoir) appears to have the greatest effect on recovery. The effect of mobility ratio on production history has been reported for most of the dispersed injection patterns (i. e., five-spot, staggered and straight-line drives).4-6 ere has been very little published on the nine-spot injection pattern. This may be because the two types of producing wells in the nine-spot pattern can—and sometimes should —be produced at different rates. This adds a second variable (the fist being mobility ratio) to be covered in a study of the nine-spot flooding network. Muskat1 has reported the sweep pattern efficiency at breakthrough for a mobility ratio of one at various ratios of producing rates for the two types of wells. For these conditions he found maximum oil production at breakthrough to occur when the corner well (the producing well farthest from the injection well) is produced 10.7 times as fast as the side well. Other investigatorsa2,3 have studied a few of the many possible operating conditions possible with this injection pattern. This paper presents the results of studies which are strictly applicable to a nine-spot injection pattern surrounded by other nine-spots in a homogeneous reservoir and which has no flowable gas present (no oil bank is formed). Although the full ranges of the variables mentioned above have not been covered, the results reported here should allow reasonable estimates of field operations to be made. EXPERIMENTAL The well spacing geometry of the nine-spot pattern is shown in Fig. 1. Here we see that each injection well is surrounded by eight production wells arranged in a square. Four of these producing wells are located at the corners of the square; the other four are in the midpoints of the four sides. These two types of producing wells are called "comer wells" and "side wells" respectively. It is the ratio of the producing rates of these two types of wells that affects the breakthrough recovery, as calculated by Muskat.' This ratio is defined as the total producing rate of a corner well divided by the total producing rate of a side well. The model used in this study represented one-eighth of a nine-spot pattern, as shown in Fig. 1. It contained the equivalent of one-fourth of a side well, one-eighth of a comer well, and one-eighth of an injection well. Because of these proportions, the actual producing rate ratios in the model were one-half of the ratios of producing rates as

The movphology of the Mg-32 wt pct Al eutectic has been studied as a function of freezing- rate and temperature gradient. At slow freezing rates a lamellar eutectic was formed; whereas, a rod-like eutectic was generated at fast rates. The inter-lamellar spacing increased as the freezing rate decreased in aggreement with theoretical predictions. Lamellar faults, morphologically similar to edge dislocation models in crystals, were responsible for the subgrain structures in the eutectic mixture. A linear increase in fault density with freezing rate was observed. Fault concentl-ations of the order of 10 per sq cm for a range of freezing rates from 0.6 to -3.0 x 10 cm per sec were estimated. The transformation from lamella?, to rod-like morphologies was determined experimentally to be dependent on the freezing rate and independent of the temperature gradient. Moreover, the number of rods formed per- unit cross-sectional area increased exponentiallv with increasing freezing rote. BRADY' and portevin2 classified eutectic structures into lamellar, rod-like, and globular according to the morphology of the solid phases present. Although this classification is quite descriptive, very little has been reported on the details of the mechanism by which the eutectic structures are formed. Recent work by Winegard, Majka, Thall, and chalmers3 and by chalmers4 on lamellar eutectic solidification suggest that the maximum thickness of the lamellae decreases with increasing rate of solidification due to inadequate time for lateral diffusion. scheilS and Tiller' have shown theoretically that the lamellar widths indeed depend on the solidification rate. However, there has been no experimental evidence to support the theory. Chilten and winegard7 have studied the interface morphology of a eutectic alloy of zone-refined lead and tin. They found that the lamellar width decreased as the freezing rate increased in agreement with the theoretical predictions of scheils and Tiller.' More recently, Kraft and Albright' have investigated the microstructures of the A1-CuA12 eutectic as a function of growth variables. They observed lamellar faults present in the lamellar eutectic, similar to edge dislocation models in crystals. Furthermore, Kraft and Albright reported that they could not designate which extra lamellar was responsible for the formation of a lamellar fault even under electron microscopic magnification. In this paper, the morphology of the Mg-A1 eutectic structure is described. The effects of freez- ing rate on the interlamellar spacing and on the lamellar fault density are presented in detail. The transformation from lamellar to rod-like eutectics is discussed in terms of the freezing rate and the temperature gradient. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental details of alloy preparation, the decanting mechanism and the determinations of the freezing rate and the temperature gradient have been reported elsewhere. Measurements of plate-edge angles were made with a microscope. The true angles used to determine the interlamellar spacings were determined by a two surface analysis technique.'' Since the decanted interface structure does not represent the true eutectic morphology on the solid,g all measurements were made from an area in the solidified bar behind the interface. Measurements of the apparent interlamellar spacings between the two phases of the eutectic were made on a photographic negative by means of a calibrated magnifier. Each value listed in Table I represents the average of thirty measurements on one negative. In general, these measurements are approximately equal with an error of less than pct. The average rod diameter for each specimen was also measured on a magnified photomicrograph. Each value of the diameter represents the average of fifty measurements. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The experimental observations and their discussion to be presented here are restricted to the morphology of the eutectic structure and to the effects of the freezing rate and the temperature gradient on the solidification of eutectics. INTERLAMELLAR SPACING It has been shown previouslyg that the micro-structure of the decanted interface and the longitudinal section of the Mg-A1 eutectic is characterized by the presence of both lamellar and rod-like morphologies. The lamellae become more regular as the freezing rate is decreased. A three-dimensional photomicrograph representing a perfect lamellar morphology is illustrated in Fig. 1. The lamellae of the top and longitudinal sections of the specimen are regularly spaced while those in the transverse section are not quite straight and parallel. From data found in the literature, a method has been derived for calculating hardenability of titanium alloys from their composition. A single graph gives the contributions of each alloying element. These are simply added to a base hardenability for unalloyed titanium. Results agree satisfactorily with measured harden-abilities. RECENTLY the importance of hardenability of titanium alloys in permitting attainment of high strength and hardness has become apparent. If a titanium-base alloy has adequate hardenability for the section size and quenching practice used, it can generally be heat treated to high strength and hardness either by simple quenching or cooling from temperatures near the ß transus, by quenching and tempering (aging), or perhaps by direct isothermal transformation of ß1,2 If the hardenability is inadequate, high strength cannot be attained. Preliminary charts translating hardenability requirements for shapes quenched in various media into terms of Jominy end quenched hardenability specimens or ideal round sizes are now available for titanium alloys." The method proposed in 1942 by M. A. Grossmann for calculating hardenability of steels from composition has proved to be of great practical value.' It appeared worthwhile to see whether, using information available in the literature, a corresponding method for calculating hardenability of titanium-base alloys could be derived. Data No systematic experimental study of the hardenability of titanium-base alloys has yet been made. There is available, however, a considerable quantity of scattered data bearing on hardenability. Some investigators determined Jominy curves on one or several alloys. Others reported as-quenched hardness for specimens of a few alloys cooled at various rates or in various media. Still others gave the as-quenched hardness for systematically varied composition, using one or several cooling mediums. The measurements utilized in this work were limited to hardness. Strength measurements were not used because a low strength may reflect high hardness combined with brittleness. Since, in general, the hardness of titanium alloys goes through a peak as the cooling rate is varied from extremely fast to extremely slow, the cooling conditions at which peak hardness was found were taken as the measure of hardenability.1,2 When as-quenched hardness was found to drop as the content of an alloying element (believed to increase hardenability) was raised, this was taken as an indication that the cooling rate was faster than that giving peak hardness; otherwise, the hardness should go up because of solid solution hardening. Also, if the hardness increased on tempering at low temperatures, this was again taken to indicate that the cooling rate had been faster than that giving peak hardness. Many of the data did not indicate precisely the cooling conditions for peak hardness but merely set a maximum or a minimum bound, or a bracket. Since the sizes of specimens quenched and the location of the hardness readings were not always given, it was occasionally necessary to estimate reasonable limits for them. Only the nominal compositions were available in some cases. As quenching from below the ß transus is equivalent to starting with a mixture of a and ß phases, whose individual composition would differ from the overall composition of the alloy, only measurements after quenches from above the ß transus were used. Hardness measurements on samples heated during metal-lographic mounting were also discarded. Because of their bulk, the data used will not be reproduced. They have been or will be published elsewhere.5-22 Approach All data were first translated into terms of ideal round size. For conversion from Jominy or quenched round or sheet, the author's graphs were used." For a few furnace cools or helium quenches where cooling rates were given, conversion was made on the basis of equal cooling coefficient.23 Plots of ideal round size for peak hardness against percentage of alloying element were next made for

The density of liquid plutonium was determined, by a pycnometm'c technique, from 664 to 788°C and exhibited a temperature dependence, which could be expressed as:. P= C17.63 - 1.52 x 10-"t] +0.04 g per cc where t = OC. These density values compare favorably with the values previously obtained by a technique utilizing Archimedes' principle. The apparatus and method were evaluated when the densities 0.f molten tin and bismuth were measured and found to be in agreement with accepted literature values. PLUTONIUM or an alloy of plutonium in the liquid state has been proposed as a fuel for a fast-breeder type nuclear power plant.' Since knowledge of the liquid density of plutonium is required for the proper design of such a system, this study was undertaken. In addition, the density and volume expansion coefficient of liquid plutonium are of interest for comparison with these same properties of the six allotropic modifications of the solid metal. Comstock and GibneyZ were first to report a value for the density of liquid plutonium. The value for only one temperature, 665"C, was calculated from data obtained by the radiography of the meniscus, Fig. 3. Recently, the density at a series of temperatures has been reported by Knight,3 who obtained his values by using a differential volumeter, and by 01-sen, Sandenaw, and Herrik, who obtained their values from measurements of the loss in weight of a tungsten bob immersed in the liquid. (communication to the Secretary*`) :-The authors have shown that, under certain conditions, the rate of dissolution of gold by chlorine and bromine is re¬duced by the addition of 10 per cent. of silver to the gold, and that the action is almost stopped when the silver amounts to 30 or 40 per cent. of the alloy. Even if full recognition is given to the practical way in which the work was done, how¬ever, it is to be regretted that Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnuson did not determine the temperature at which the experiments were carried out. From the details given it may be inferred that the temperature was raised by chemical action by about 20° C. when 21 g. of sulphuric acid were added, and that the mixture was then slowly cooled down during the experiment. When bromine or very weak chlorine solutions were used, there could not have been any perceptible heating action. As the action of both chlorine and bromine is aided by heat, it follows that the stronger solutions of chlorine were given an unfair advantage over the weaker solutions and over bromine. If the temperature had been the same in each case, I do not think that the conclusions given oil p. 432 of the Bi-Monthly Bulletin, March, 1905, 1 would have been found to be justified. (This is speaking generally. In barrel-treatment the conditions are similar to those in the experiments.) The superior speed of bromine as compared with chlorine at equivalent strengths is not yet disproved, and the differences noted between strong and weak solutions of chlorine may have been largely a function of the temperature. IT has long been realized among metallurgists that a fast, reliable method for the quantitative determination of the percentage of microconstituents in an alloy would be of great benefit in studies of equilibrium and transformation in the solid state. For example, Polushkin1 has shown that the compositions of two coexisting phases in a a binary system at a given temperature may be calculated very simply with the aid of two alloys lying in the two-phase field if the relative amounts of the two phases in each alloy can be determined. Recently, Grange and Stewart2 have traced the course of the austenite-martensite reaction in a series of commercial steels by making visual estimates of the percentage of martensite formed as a function of cooling temperature. The correlation of mechanical properties with structure, a subject of wide-spread current interest, is likewise dependent upon quantitative microanalysis.3 Yet, there are very few investigations described in the metallurgical literature, wherein methods of quantitative microscopy are employed. Usually, the relative amounts of the microconstituents are estimated in a qualitative or semiquantitative way. The authors were faced with this problem some time ago in studying the kinetics of austenite decomposition. Several aspects of, this research could not be treated satisfactorily by other quantitative tools, such as specific volume,4 magnetic,5 dilatometric,6 electrical resistance7 or x-ray measurements.8 It became necessary to find an impersonal quantitative method that could be applied to microstructures. Fortunately, it was noted that geologists and petrographers had coped with quantitative microscopy to a considerable degree in their attempts to evaluate the mineral contents of rocks. A number of excellent articles were found on this subject, and since they appear to be unknown generally to many metallurgists, the first part of the present paper is concerned with a review of the literature in some detail. With this survey as a background, the authors have adapted the so-called methods of point-counting and lineal analysis to metallography, as described in the second part of the paper. Austenite-martensite structures were selected for illustration not only because they are important in many ways, but because such fine intermixtures are notoriously difficult to estimate visually. EXAMINATION by the differential thermal analysis technique of a large number of samples of soil and other clays from various parts of the world has demonstrated that the occurrence of cold-precipitated hydrated ferric oxide (the identification of which in soil clays has previously been reported5) is not confined to any limited locality; e.g., it has been found in varying amounts in clays from Britain, France, South Africa, and Mexico. The conditions necessary for its formation have not yet been elucidated in spite of the number of samples examined, and, since this mineral is so easily prepared in the laboratory, it has been considered that a study of its constitu¬tion and of the conditions under which it could be prepared might. lead to a better understanding of the factors involved. These experiments form the subject of this short paper, and while they do not supply a definite answer to the mode of formation of this mineral in nature, they may, it is hoped, add something to our knowledge in this direction. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Materials Employed The a-Fe2O3.H2O (goethite) and B-Fe2O3.H2O (Weiser and Milligan") were obtained from the Department of Geology, University of Aberdeen, and Rothamsted Experimental Station, respectively. The beta material had been prepared by the method described by Fernelius.1 y-Fe2O3.H2O (lepidocrocite) was prepared at the Macaulay Institute for Soil Research by the method of van Schuylenborgh.6 The method employed for preparation of the cold-precipitated hydrated ferric oxide* was as follows: 1: 1 NH4OH was added (moderately fast with rapid stirring) to a solution of 5 grams FeC13.6H2O in 250 ml distilled water at room temperature (ca. 15°C) until red litmus turned blue, and then 2 to 3 drops in excess. The resultant precipitate was filtered off on a Buchner funnel and washed free from Cl- with distilled water. 'This paper discusses a method and apparatus for determining the dip of formations traversed by a drill hole, by means of electrical measurements in the hole. The process consists in recording the Spontaneous Potentials present along three oriented generatrices in the hole. By comparison of the three curves thus obtained, after application of a correction factor to compensate for any deviations of the hole, the dip angle and the dip direction are determined. Excellent accuracy is obtained for dip angles over 10°. Because the method is simp1e and the apparatus rugged, the measurements are rapid and reliable; consequently, they can be made at all the levels that are of interest at any time after the well has been drilled. Mechanical cores are not needed to evaluate the dips. A convenient, time-saving procedure is to perform the dipmeter survey at the time the electrical log is taken, using for both operations the same cable and truck. Actual examples of results obtained in wells of the Gulf Coast area are given. Introduction The problem of determining the angle and direction of the dip of the strata traversed by a drill hole has practical interest, and sometimes vital importance, which need not be emphasized to the oil industry. The need for that type of information has existed ever since wells have been drilled. Certainly it has not subsided, in spite of the numerous inventions and improvements made in other fields of the art of drill-hole exploration. The few examples given in this paper are but illustrative of this fact. In the past, methods have been devised, and used, to solve this problem, but generally they have met with limited success, possibly because they failed more or less to answer the requirements of a modern age for fast yet accurate measurements. If accurate, the results were obtained at the cost of very tedious and lengthy operations. The new S. P.* dipmeter service offered to the oil industry is the result of exhaustive and in this particular field. In 1032 a dipmeter and electromagnetic teleclinom-eter service was made available. The apparatus employed then was of a rather delicate and costly construction, and the measurements had to be made with precautions sometimes difficult to secure on the rig. Although the information given by the electromagnetic dipmeter was limited to the direction of the dip, very interesting results were obtained in California, Trinidad, Venezuela, Rumania and, most notably, in the Netherlands East Indies.+ Apparatus The S. P. dipmeter surveys present none of the drawbacks mentioned above. The apparatus is rugged and free from constructional complications, therefore well adapted to field use. THOSE familiar with mill-practice understand the work required of an average bucket-elevator, but I wish to call special attention to the wear on the buckets. I have been studying in what manner the life and service of the bucket might be improved, and I feel that an adjustable lip, attachable to each bucket without the aid of rivets, will be of material advantage. For illustration, consider the feed-elevator of a typical mill in the Cur d'Alène district. The ore is carried by water in a launder from the feed-rolls and dumped in the "boot" of the elevator, directly in front of the ascending bucket. Middlings from the return-rolls are similarly handled. Under this condition the bucket not only carries the ore, but also picks it up, and this latter requirement determines the life and service of the bucket. It might be said that it would be better practice to convey the feed to the elevator and dump it directly into the bucket, but at one mill at which this plan was tried the results were disappointing and the rubber belt was badly worn. The wear of the bucket is confined to the lip and the corners which have to pick up the material. When the lip on a corner of a 7- by 12-in. malleable cast-iron bucket is worn down about 3 in., the bucket is of no further value as a carrier and has to be replaced. The worn bucket, containing about three¬quarters by weight of the metal of the original bucket, has a scrap value of about 10 per cent. of that of a new bucket. To the cost of the bucket, however, should be added the time-cost of replacing the old bucket by a new one. This time-cost is considerable when the loss per hour, to cease operating the mill, is about $200. It is out of the question to put lips on a bucket unless the latter was originally fitted with this device. For if it is attempted to fit lips upon buckets not originally provided with

Flaubert, as we know, laid stress on the selection of the right word, le mot juste, the precise epithet, the word that belongs to the thing. A sentence, or even a paragraph, may be spoiled by the use of a word that is not proper, that does not fit or is foreign to the meaning intended. An Australian mining expert is reported to have said: You have a property of considerable value, and what I saw warrants a good development of very rich cubicular galena, with gossan intermixed. 'Cubicular' means `belonging to a small bedroom', a `cubicle' being a sleeping compartment. He meant `cubic', of course. This is a malapropism, and reminds me of the lady from Chicago that, on her return from Europe, said how much she had enjoyed the rural parts of France, because, among other things, it was "so delightful to hear the French pheasants singing the mayonnaise to the tune of the Los Angelus". It is impossible to amalgamate coal-tar thoroughly with the pulp in the agitating-tank. In metallurgy, `amalgamate' refers to the combination of mercury with one or both of the precious metals, forming an amalgam, which is an alloy of mercury with another metal. It differs from other alloys, such as brass or bronze, in being made without the aid of heat, inasmuch as mercury is molten at the ordinary temperature. The word comes to us from the Greek. through Old French and means `something soft'. It is a mistake to use technical terms, having a specific meaning, for purposes that are foreign to that meaning. The writer of the quotation is not discussing any combination of metals; he is dealing with the physical process of mixing and is using 'amal-
