WITH the supply of zinc, like that of most other nonferrous metals, inadequate to meet the demand, efforts to increase domestic ore supplies and production capacity have been of primary interest. No major sources of new ore have been disclosed during the year but improvements have been reported in facilities for mining and concentrating ores from existing mines. The American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. has announced its intention of erecting a new mill in the Ouray district of Colorado. The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada is reported to be planning improvements costing $3,000,000 to its Sullivan mine and concentrator at Kimberley, B.C., where the sink-float process is to be used for preliminary ore treatment. Mineral Industries Extension instruction was pioneered by The Pennsylvania State Colleges Extension work was organized in 1893 and constituted what is believed to be the first vocational adult educational effort in that field in America. From 1894 to 1899, twenty-seven extension bulletins were printed and distributed free for the benefit of classes in the coal-mining industry and the records show that free lectures wore delivered by a corps of teachers of the mining department of the College "to the mining employees at their customary lace of assembly upon matters of interest to them in their occupation." In 1899, the State Legislature reduced the appropriation to the College and therefore the extension pamphlets and lectures were discontinued. Several sporadic attempts were made to resume the extension services in mining through industrial grants for travel and publications, and through voluntary contributions by members of the resident staff. The work. consisted mainly of lectures and demonstrations and served the purpose of creating the desire for more training and information of a more formal character. In 1928, the nave of the school was changed, by trustee action, from School of Mines and Metallurgy to the School of Mineral Industries and the working structure of the school was organized under the three functional collaborating headings: Resident Instruction, Correspondence and Extension Instruction, and Mineral Industries Research. The three functional bodies are separate, yet interdependent. The Federal Smith-Hughes law, passed in 1917, made Federal and State funds available for vocational educational work. Mining extension was revived in 1919 and the College employed one full-time extension professor to reorganize the work and instruct the classes. In 1923, the State Department of Mines and the State Department of Public Instruction entered into, a formal agreement with the School of Mineral Industries to assist the College in its extension program.. Classes were organized to study the State mining laws and State Department of Mines' previous examination questions and answers, in preparation for coming state examinations for certification of competency as underground officials. Mimeographed lesson material was used at first, and in 1947 and 1929 mining instruction and mining teacher-training lessons were printed. In 1931, the extension activities of the school were placed on an organized basis compatible with the newly formed school organization and a director was appointed to tale full charge of the work. During that year, at a conference in Harrisburg, an agreement was consummated between the State Departments of Public. Instruction, Mines, Labor and. Industry, and the College whereby extension classes in the field of the, mineral industries could be organized by the College, throughout the State, under "public supervision and. control," in close cooperation with the State Department.

We have studied the effect of adsorbed sulfur on the surface self-diffusion of copper using eight diflerent surface orientations and the grain boundary grooving method. The eight orientations studied were the four lying near the low-index surfaces—(loo), (Ill), and two directions in the (110)-plus four higher-index surfaces. Surface-diffusion measurements were made over a range of HZS concentrations (in Hz) from 3 to 1500 ppm between 830°and 1050°C. The results can be divided into two groups—Group 1 contains the two (110) surfaces while Group 2 contains the remaining six surfaces. In Group 1, increasing the temperature increases the effect of Hz S on DS for the Hz S range 5700 ppvn. Qs and Do increase with increasing H2S concentration in this Hz S range. Beyond this range, increasing the temperature decreases this effect on D,; also Q, and Do decrease. In Group 2, increasing the telnperature decreases the effect of H2 S on D, for the H2S range studied, and Qs and Do decrease with increasing Hz S concentration. In any study of surface phenomena, there invariably arises the question of the possible presence of and effect of adsorbed impurities. Such questions are well-founded since the presence of adsorbed atoms can sometimes produce marked changes in the kinetics of surface-energy-driven processes. In the last few years, values of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, D,, have been determined on a variety of metals by studying the decay of scratches or the growth of grain boundary grooves.L~3-L0~L3 Yet there has been relatively little work done in which the concentration of an adsorbed impurity was systematically varied and the effects observed. Work of this sort would provide some basis in fact for the assertions often made about the ro1.e of adsorbed impurities in the differences between the results of different workers in different atmospheres and on different metals. It also is relevant to those cases in which surface monolayers produce profound effects in commercially important processes. The most marked example of such effects is the ability of nickel or palladium to increase the sintering rate of tungsten by many orders of magnitude.' The aim of this work was to study the effect of sulfur partial pressures on the surface self-diffusion of copper. It was felt that this in conjunction with a study of the degree of adsorption and type of active sites involvedL8 would provide a wide range of data for one system and hopefully lead to some insight into the mechanism by which sulfur adsorption influences copper diffusion. The main reasons for choosing the Cu-S system were, first, faceting was reported not to accompany the adsorption of sulfur. This is required if our experimental technique is to work. Second, Oudar has determined a high temperature adsorption isotherm for this system, an event which puts the Cu-S system almost in a class by itself.I4 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Initially, we considered studying the effect of an adsorbed impurity on surface self-diffusion of copper using isolated (or single) scratch smoothing as the technique and oxygen as the impurity. Copper was chosen as the material because the effects of orientation and anisotropy of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, D,, of copper in a dry hydrogen atmosphere had been studied extensively by Gjostein' and by Shewmon and ~hoi.~,~ The isolated scratch technique was chosen because both the effects of surface orientation and anisotropy of D, in a given surface could be easily studied with this method.~ Oxygen was tried as the impurity because Robertson and Shewmon""~ had studied its adsorption on copper at 1000°C over the range of oxygen partial pressures of 10"22 to 10-l3 atm. After several preliminary runs, it became evident that neither the scratch technique nor the impurity oxygen would be satisfactory for this work. Scratching deforms an annealed surface so that the region near the scratches recrystallizes, thereby disrupting the scratch profiles. One can avoid this by deforming the specimen sufficiently before scratching to give complete recrystallization on subsequent heating.4 However, as a result of Gjostein's success in scratching and annealing undeformed gold single crystals without local recrystallization,13 we attempted something similar with copper single crystals using a 0.7-mil diamond phonograph needle mounted in a Tukon hardness tester. All specimens recrystallized upon being annealed. Also, some copper specimens were sent to Gjostein to be scratched using his technique. The results were the same. As a result, the scratch technique was dropped in favor of the grooving of symmetric grain boundaries. Preliminary work using oxygen showed that faceting began to occur before oxygen adsorption had any measurable effect on D, at 938°C (at Pbo/P, = 0.12). Since heavy faceting would interfere with the measurement, we decided to use a sulfur-containing atmosphere (H2S/H2). Work by Oudar and Benard' and Robertson" showed that sulfur absorbed on copper and that faceting was not observed.

For the past year, MBD has been engaged in a lively discussion on a name change for the Division. To complicate things, more than one name change has been proposed! There has been much discussion on the subject, as anyone who has attended the Annual MBD Business Meeting or read [jE] knows. The position of many of our members is well known. There is, however, one group that has not been heard from. These are the future members-the present students and those even younger who are yet to elect our profession. As one who has traversed the academic-industrial interface several times, I think I am qualified to speak for this group. Before going further I think it wise to state unequivocally that our Division should adequately represent our profession. The whole profession is just too small to chop into a plethora of pieces: "I'm not a mineral processing engineer, I'm an ore dresser-well, actually, I specialize in comminution, specifically in grinding, mostly in autogeneous grinding-primary autogeneous grinding that is-and my 'thing' is really iron ores, taconites, mind you!" Enough to confuse even those that keep the faith, and certainly we can't build a profession on such narrow pieces. Either an employer can hire a professional who knows the entire profession or he can't. As more and more companies search out opportunities in the mining and metallurgical fields and as environmental considerations bring into question even our technically well proven processes and procedures, there is a greater need than ever be- fore for a well-rounded mineral processing engineer well versed in all of the process possibilities. What is needed is one who can take an ore-or municipal trash for that matter-and produce there from a valuable product by the most appropriate means. It doesn't really matter if this is done physically, chemically or thermally.

SLIP, twinning, stacking faults, and precipitates on well-defined planes in a crystal produce traces that are visible on either a polished or an etched surface. The purpose of this note is to establish the usefulness and limitations of the information obtained from such traces when determining the orientation of single crystals or grains in a polycrystal. Attention will be confined specifically to traces produced by octahedral planes in cubic crystals, though most of the remarks can be taken as more generally valid. The problem of determining the crystal orientation is completely solved in principle' and in particular for the special case under consideration.1'2 Tables are available3 in which the orientations can simply be looked up when given the two or three angles between the traces. Thus a quick and simple method is available for obtaining the orientation of a crystal from surface traces. In this note two examples will be given from recently published papers and will show the use of the method with the aid of the Tables, as well as some of the precautions that should be taken in the procedure. As part of an analysis of X-ray Kossel lines, Peters and Ogilvie 4 determined from them the crystallographic orientation of the specimen. They chose a Cu-5.10 wt pct Si alloy that had been partly transformed from the a (fee) phase to the k (hcp) phase. The latter formed as very straight platelets along the octahedral planes of the a phase, and a photograph (Fig. 7 of Ref. 4) was reproduced in the paper4 of the region for which the orientation had been determined from the Kossel lines. Apart from a very small area (about 0.15 mm diam) near the top center of the photograph, the region shown was clearly all of one orientation. Traces in four different directions were readily identified. Starting with the smallest angle and proceeding counterclockwise, the angles between the traces were measured to be 27° 43', 55° 16', 64 3 43 1, and32"26'. These add up to 1802 08 1, indicating a cumulative error of 8'. The correct values should, of course, be taken from the original glass plates, or at least from prints on distortion-free paper, so the precision of the quoted values is actually greater than their accuracy. The solutions can be looked up in the Tables3 in four ways, depending on how the angles are paired, tion for the minutes of arc is required and the solution obtained will be identical for all the four pairs if the values of the angles are not in error. In a practical situation, such as this one, there are several sources of error, so that the four solutions obtained will all be slightly different. An arithmetic average of the four solutions is mathematically incorrect, but may, in special cases, give an answer close to the correct one. A rigorous procedure for refining the orientation has been described by Mackenzie;5 he gives a least-squares method that can be applied, if necessary, to this type of problem. The orientation thus determined can be compared with the one from the Kosel lines and discrepancies larger than the experimental error assigned to nonor thogonality of the X-ray or electron beam to the specimen. Here the example will only be used to illustrate the general procedure for making a very rapid rough check. From measurements on the stereographic projection, Fig. 9 of the paper,4 we can determine that the surface normal is approximately (0.434, 0.704, 0.562). From the Tables3 we find, using 28°, 55" as a good approximation to the first pair (27°43', 55°16'), that the surface normal is (0.453, 0.678, 0.579).* These two values are within 2 deg of each

INTRODUCTION The Mount Isa Mine is a large modern underground mine located in North-Western Queensland, Australia. Two ore types are mined and treated separately. Currently silver-lead-zinc ore is mined at the rate of 2.6 million tonnes per annum and copper ore at the rate of 4.6 million tonnes per annum. The silver-lead-zinc orebodies are mined by sub level open stoping and cut and fill methods whilst all copper ore is extracted by various forms of sub level open stoping. The mining operations are highly mechanised and utilise diesel powered load-haul-dump units of various sizes, two and three boom face drilling jumbos, electric-hydraulic rotary-percussive ring drills, in-the-hole hammer drills, rotary blasthole drills, raiseborers, battery/trolley locomotives, a large fleet of rubber tyred service and supply vehicles plus light rockdrills mounted on airlegs, rail mounted overshot shovels and battery and diesel powered locomotives. All stoping production ore is extracted with diesel powered load-haul-dump units. The ore is tipped into orepasses which connect to the main rail haulage levels. On the haulage levels electric battery/trolley locomotives are used to pull rakes of bottom dump or side dump trucks which feed the ore into primary crushers. Following two stage crushing the ore is conveyed to the shaft and hoistod to surface in bottom dump skips. Each ore stream has its own rail transport system, crushing stations and hoisting shaft feeding separate concentrators. This paper will consider some aspects of the role of equipment and machinery in the growth of the mine, will discuss in some detail the machinery and equipment in use today and will conclude with a look at some possible developments in mining equipment for the future, with particular reference to the Mount Isa Mine. A summary of mining equipment in use at Mount Isa is given in the Appendix. THE PAST Silver-lead-zinc ore was discovered at Mount Isa in 1923 and within a very short time many small mines were being developed. However the rich surface ore traces did not continue and by 1928 Mount Isa Mines Limited had acquired sufficient leases to plan for a large scale mine to exploit the low grade orebodies. At this early stage it was recognised that the mine would need to adopt the most mechanised mining techniques then available in order to overcome its twin disadvantages of low graaes and extreme remoteness. The Company introduced bar mounted drifters and overshot shovels to replace hammer and tap and hand shovelling in development work and by 1930 headings were advancing at the rate of 30 metres per week. In keeping with the concept of mechanisation the early engineers designed the Man and Supply shaft with a very large, for those days, cage compartment measuring 3.8 m x 3.4 m. This shaft was the main means of access into the mine for 36 years until the K57 shaft (now R62 shaft) was commissioned in 1966. Man and Supply is still in regular use. Production commenced in 1931 at an annual rate of approximately 660 000 tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore. The mine was mechanised to an extent which was previously unknown in Australia; whilst the concentrator, smelter and power house utilised the most modern and efficient equipment available. Even so, the mine was very near to closure on several occasions and did not return a dividend to its shareholders for many years. Production levels remained at or slightly below 660 000 tonnes until a separate copper ore streani and mill was commissioned in 1953, doubling the existing production levels. The first underground crushers were installed at this time. Production rates expanded in the years between 1953 and 1973. By 1960 production reached 2740 000 tonnes of ore. In 1965-66 total production was 3650 000 tonnes and in 1973 the production rate plateaued at the current level.

On Friday, Jan. 17, the thirteenth impression of the Perkin Medal was presented to Dr. Frederick Gardner Cottrell, at a meeting of the New York Section of the Society of Chemical Industry, held at the Chemists' Club, in New York City. The presentation address was delivered by Dr. C. F. Chandler, Senior Past President of the Society. The medal was awarded for the recipient's work in the electrical precipitation of suspended particles in gases. Dr. Cottrell's career, which is so familiar to members of the Institute, was sketched by Dr. Chandler. He told at some length of the experiments leading up to the final solution of electrostatic precipitation, which has done so much to solve the problem of smelter smoke. The principal interest in Dr. Cottrell's speech of acceptance lay in his remarks about helium, the production of which has been so reduced in cost that it has practically supplanted the use of hydrogen for inflation purposes in war balloons. He said: "Two or three weeks after war was declared in 1917, Dr. R. B. Moore attended a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Kansas City. At the general session, Mr. Seibel of the University of Kansas, gave a paper on krypton and xenon in some of the natural gases of Kansas. At the end of his paper, he expressed regret that at such a time, when everyone was thinking of war problems, his paper was of a purely scientific nature and had no practical bearing on the war. Dr. Moore immediately got up and said that he did not agree with Mr. Seibel. The presence of helium in those wells could, and should, have a very practical bearing on the war, as this gas could be extracted in quantity from the natural gas and used for balloons and Zeppelins. He pointed out some of the natural advantages of helium over hydrogen, and quoted Sir William Ramsey's letter advocating the use of helium for airships. The general attitude of those present was one of scepticism, so he finally asked Dr. Cady for his opinion who stated that he believed-the thing could be done, but was very doubtful whether it could ever be made practical on account of the cost." Dr. Moore in a letter wrote: "That same day I talked to Dr. Parsons, who was present at the meeting and was returning to Washington almost immediately. I told him what had happened, and that I believed the matter should be taken up by the Bureau at once and presented to the War Department. He promised to do this as soon as he got to Washington; and I know that he did take the matter up with other Bureau officials." Dr. Cottrell continued in part: News of Ramsey's suggestions also reached this .country through other channels and eventually came to our attention. Professors Satterly and Patterson of the University of Toronto commenced experimentation of the subject Jan. 1, 1916. Col. G. A. Burrell, who headed the research department of the Gas Warfare Service at the American University, tells me that Cady's experiments had also suggested similar possibilities to him.

MAY 17-The last bit of verbal sod had hardly come to rest on the grave of the coal industry-which grave was being eagerly dug with typewriters and microphones by administration hangers-on and even an operator or two-when its leaders gathered for the 1950 Coal Convention of the AMC in Cincinnati on April 24. Surprisingly, mourning clothes were not being worn but the boys had on their diggers preparatory to digging their way out from under the muck. High costs created by wage and welfare demands, together with work stoppages, have caused markets to shrink, but even so, an optimistic air still prevailed as new techniques were disclosed at technical sessions. The administration, however, came in for its share of knocks.

Hard as the Revett quartzite are conditions governing the deep mines of the Coeur d'Al6ne. In fourscore years of mining, heat and pressure have been the rewards of preseverance. Such obstacles are the natural concommitant to search for ore at depth. But high cost and shortage of miners is a creeping frustration of the decade. These grim observations were made on a trip to the mines of the Coeur d'Al6ne in the first week of May. But the bouncy optimism of competent mining engineers and geologists overrides by far the tough conditions. This is the story of what they are doing. I think they are setting the stage for the wonder mines of tomorrow. I didn't meet all the people or see all the mines, so there are unfortunate gaps in the story. Then too, sometimes the muck and water blotched my notes, or I couldn't write fast enough or I was too tired. No matter. There is much to tell and, because it is basically a human story, I am flouting the rules of technical journalism and couching it in the neglected "I" person. First then, a little history . . . .

Discussion of the paper of W. W. NORTON, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 92, August., 1914, pp. 1993 to 1999. ARTHUR S. DWIGHT, New York, N. Y.-Mr. Norton's chief argument is directed against the idea that the D. & L. sinter is any better material for the blast furnace than the H. & H. product. He supports this by citing two experimental furnace runs. Reducibility.-To discuss a furnace record like that quoted by Mr. Norton for the five days' run in August, 1912, is manifestly difficult for an outsider, but a possible explanation for the poor reduction on Furnace No. 5, smelting D. & L. sinter, may lie in the fact that both sets of furnaces carried the same fuel charges. Other things being equal, if 11 ½ per cent. coke was right for the furnaces smelting H. & H. product, it Was too much for the furnace smelting D. & L. product, as I shall endeavor to show later, and incipient overfire, accompanied by higher leads in slag and matte, was induced. It may sound like a paradox to say that excessive fuel sometimes produces poor reduction, but it is a sad fact. In certain plants where practically the entire charge to the blast furnaces receives a preliminary treatment by being sintered on the D. & L. machines the peculiarities of this problem have had to be very carefully studied, for serious metallurgical difficulties presented themselves when the change was first made to D. & L. sinter in large quantities. Some of these plants had blast pots before they had D. & L. machines, and many opportunities were afforded for comparative study of this very point. There is reason to believe that, clue to the long period of blowing and the higher temperatures developed in the pots from greater mass action, the iron in the H. & H. product is present chiefly as Fe203, perhaps in the form of ferrites, while in the D. & L. product the iron is present as FeO. The fuel charge in the blast furnace must be so proportioned as to exactly meet the chemical and thermic requirements of reduction and melting. If ally of these functions have been performed before the material enters the furnace, a corresponding allowance should be made or the fuel balance will be disturbed and bad work will result. One of the functions of the coke is to reduce enough metallic Fe for the matte requirements, leaving the remainder of the iron as FeO to go into the slag. In smelting almost any other material than D. & L. sinter the iron must-be reduced from the higher oxides, Fe203 or Fe304, to the protoxide, FeO, before a true comparative basis is reached. Experience has shown that with about one-half D. & L. sinter on the charge the coke should-be cut about 10 per cent. This theoretical benefit is borne out by the practical blast-furnace results on a large scale in numerous plants. In fact, wherever this very important factor is ignored the evil symptoms of excessive fuel will be indicated,

The activation energy required to break a pinned dislocation line away from its condensed atmosphere of impurity atoms is calculated as a .function of applied stress, without neglecting line tension. Reasows are presented for not assuming the effect of line tension to be negligible when considering the problem of freeing a small segment of dislocation from an impurity atmosphere. The dislocation is considered to he pinned at each atomic size along its length and the pinning points are assumzed immobile. The development is a refinement of the origznal cottrell-bilby1 theory. The solution is compared to recent approximations developed by cottrell3 and Haasen5 in which line tension con- IN 1949 Cottrell and bilby1 considered the problem of determining the force required to pull a dislocation away from its condensed atmosphere of impurity atoms. They also examined the effect of thermal fluctuations on this force. The dislocation line was pictured as bowing out in a triangular loop under the action of an applied stress, and the activation energy necessary to free the dislocation from its atmosphere was calculated as a function of stress, line energy, and dislocation-solute atom interaction. siderations were neglected. A qualitative explanation of the yielding process in terms of the activation of Frank-Read sources is presented, but the lack of a realistic solution to the dynamic dislocation problem involved prevents an extension of the model at present. A self-consistent correlation between the present calculations and experimental data for delay time associated with yielding and the temperature dependence of the upper yield stress was made. Favorable agreement was noted. It is concluded that extension of the original Cottrell-~ilby' theory which includes line tension effects can just as well describe the yielding process as other approximations3,5 which neglect line tension. Cottrell and Bilby found the form of the activation energy vs stress curves to be almost independent of the line energy and the interaction energy (i.e., these parameters only affected the activation energy U by a scale factor). A check of the theory was accomplished by comparison with the experimental data of McAdam and Mebs2 for the lower yield stress as a function of temperature. cottrell,3 in 1957, attempted to obtain a simple closed-form solution for the activation energy as a function of stress by linearizing the quartic equation relating displacement of the dislocation line and applied stress. THE Bureau of Mines for a number of years has been seeking additional ways and means of improving the efficiency of its operations and increasing its service to the public. It has become obvious that changes in the organization of the Bureau are essential to a more effective accomplishment of its functions and objectives. The old organization was defective in meeting current needs in that the Bureau's field activities were neither sufficiently coordinated with the national program nor were they particularly responsive to local needs of the mineral industries. Further, the traditional organization hampered the efforts of the Bureau to obtain, analyze and provide to the policy-making agencies of the Government essential information and advice in such a form that the requirements of domestic industry could be fully taken into consideration in the development of domestic and foreign policies. Consequently, the Bureau has now modified its organizational structure.

MARCH 15-Industry is rapidly snapping back from another coal crisis, other business news is in general favorable and the outlook through the Spring is by most observers considered quite promising. Most industries report comfortable backlogs of unfilled orders, department store sales in recent weeks have equalled in dollars those of the corresponding period last year, retail sales of automobiles show again over the same period a year ago, and new orders for machine tools are at the highest figures since August 1946. Orders for railway freight cars have shown a very encouraging pickup, with a total of 9385 cars in January and the N. Y. Central alone ordering 4500 in February. Construction continues very active. In January new housing starts totaled 80,000 against 50,000 a year ago and the daily average contract awards, according to the Dodge reports, were 57 pct larger. In the first 22 days of February the increase in awards was 27 pct. Lumber orders since Jan. 1 have run 22 pct above last year. All of these favorable factors bolster the opinion that the upturn in industrial output and employment which began last summer has not yet spent itself and that the setback caused by the strikes will be made up when people get back to work. Only in a few lines are there indications that primary production may be outrunning the consumption of finished goods, although inventory build-up would seem to be rather modest as the National Association of Purchasing Agents reported in February that 78 pct of its members were buying for 60 days or less. Industrial prices as a whole show no significant trend despite the continued alarm over both the immediate and the long-term possibility of inflation caused primarily by the government's increasing expenditure and its inability to balance the budget. A recent advance of 1.9 pct in primary market prices is viewed by some people as the surface symptom of renewed inflation, but even so it is more than two years since the alltime high was reached by the daily index of sensitive commodities in November 1947. Over two years have passed since prices received by farmers hit their peak and about a year and a half since all wholesale prices and the consumer price index touched their highest points in August 1948. The decline in the wholesale price index has been almost continuous, interrupted only twice by slight advances in the monthly figures from February to March 1949, and, later in the year, from August to September. Of course, this continued decline in the last half of 1949 largely reflects a downward movement in farm and food prices. Wholesale prices for commodities other than farm and food leveled out after June and now stand only slightly under the June level. Farm products are down by 22 pct from January and by 18.6 pct from August 1948. Food prices are down only slightly less. Consequently, the farm price support program is in serious trouble and has imposed a heavy financial burden on the Treasury. In those commodities other than farm products only building materials, chemicals and textiles have come down as much as the average, while housefurnishings and metals and their products have fallen hardly at all. Glancing away from the domestic front, the results of the British general election indicated a highly inconvenient situation, that public opinion there is so exactly deadlocked as to divest the victors of much ability to make forceful decisions or create significant policy. It is generally considered that another election in the near future would give substantially the same result. The British people are equally divided and the politicians are not likely to precipitate another appeal to the country until there is manifest reason to believe that external and internal circumstances have changed sufficiently to permit one party or the other to obtain a decisive verdict. Because of the lack of a clear mandate steel nationalization will likely lag in Britain. In the meantime there is considerable discussion going on as to whether the European steel industries as a whole are at a disadvantage in world competition with the American industry. An article in the "Statistical Bulletin" for January of the British Iron and Steel Federation takes issue on this point with the authors of the Geneva report, observing that they wrote before devaluation, and this particular conclusion "has been overtaken by events." The "Bulletin" also contends that the statement was in any case incorrect so far as Britain was concerned, and that it was based on scanty and insufficient evidence. To support the rebuttal a detailed and extensive comparison is made of the home prices of certain steel products in Britain and in other countries of the world. The accompanying table gives a selection of the prices published. It sets out the changed position since devaluation and since the recent increases in American steel prices. These are home market prices; no doubt in competitive export business some of the price levels could be brought closer together at need.

In answer to inquiries from members, Mr. Sheafer said that the culm-banks of which his paper gave the shipments were of about the average quality of the banks in the Mahanoy region of the Schuylkill field,.made prior to 1881 or 1882, when the practice of preparing buckwheat coal was introduced; but that in a very old hank, made about 1849, no coal above pea-size had been found. Apparently it was then the practice to ship everything. In reply to an inquiry concerning the utilization of the fine coaldust, Mr. Sheafer said that it was not utilized in connection with the washing described in his paper, but was carried away in the water as waste; that during Mr. Corbin's presidency the Reading Company built at Mahanoy City an extensive plant for making artificial fuel, but difficulty was encountered, due to the circumstance that the small coal from different collieries varied in its combustible quality and also in the amount of pitch required to be mixed with it, and he believed they concluded that from some varieties of the coal-dust a very good fuel could be made, but at a cost entirely too great for successful competition with cheap coal. Of course, the anthracite dust was not so well suited to this manufacture as bituminous slack. R. W. Raymond, New York City : I believe that was the practical outcome of the enterprise of a member of the Institute, Mr. E. F. Loiseau, now deceased. It was found, I think, as an additional drawback, that the manufacture of artificial compressed fuel from anthracite dust could not be successfully practiced with material so impure as that of the culm-banks. Consequently, the manufacture could be based on that source of supply only when accompanied with a preparatory washing. The most favorable location for it would be at large yards where the waste from the handling of coal, which is comparatively pure material, could be thus treated. I believe the manufacture of compressed fuel from bituminous coal was at one time a profitable business in Nova Scotia, but was destroyed by the indirect effect of the general introduction of watergas for illuminating purposes. Metallic copper of purity equal to commercial electrolytic copper is deposited during the anodic dissolution of technically available white metal, Cu2S, in m acidic solution of' copper(II) sulfate as electrolyte and copper sheets as cathodes. The process may be applied on commercial scale since it has the advantage of by passing the converting and poling steps, decreasing pollution problems due to SO, and recovering the sulfur of the white metal in the elemental form. The anodic dissolution is believed to take place in three steps: The working conditions that lead to 98 pct cathodic current efficiency are: 30 gpl Cu2+ and 100 gpl H2SO4 in electrolyte, current density 1.0 amp per sq dm, and tetnperature of bath 40°C'. DURING the smelting of copper, nickel, lead, and zinc sulfide ores, large amounts of sulfur dioxide are produced. Because the release of this gas in the atmosphere causes pollution problems, many attempts were made in the past for its recovery either in liquified form or processed to sulfuric acid. Although these two forms of sulfur are the usual forms that are consumed by the chemical and metallurgical industries, their storage and transport usually raise economic problems. It was realized, long ago, that a process by which sulfur can be recovered directly in the elemental form would be most attractive. Elemental sulfur is easily stored and transported, and is readily converted to SO2, H2S, or H2SO4 when needed. Processes aimed to recover the metals from their sulfide ores, and at the same time by-product sulfur in the elemental form, were recently reviewed.' As early as 1882, Marchese2 patented a process in which a matte having the composition: Cu 15, Pb 14, Fe 41, and S 25 pct was electrolyzed. According to cohen3 the process was applied on a pilot scale by the Aktiengesellschaft fur Bergbau-, Blei-, und Zinkhiitten-betriebe at Stolberg, Rheinland, Germany. The process was unsuccessful, however, owing to the contamination of the electrolyte during electrolysis. Studies in this field were reported by Bernfeld4 and Egli.5 Borchers et a1.6-8 developed the process further by using white metal (Cu 78.2 pct, S 19.6 pct) instead of the matte, and a pilot plant was operated by the Mansfeldschen Kupferschiefer Co. at Eisleben, German~.~ It appears, however, that the process never went into commercial operation. Further studies in this direction were carried out by Russian workers.10-23 The International Nickel Co. of Canada erected a pilot plant at Port Colborne in 1951 to apply the process to nickel matte which is essentially pure nickel sulfide."'- 26 Full-scale plant went into operation at the Thompson Refinery in Manitoba in 1964.27 In this method nickel sulfide matte is melted and cast into anodes analyzing 76 pct Ni and 20 pct S with small amounts of copper, cobalt, and iron. These anodes are then electrolyzed in an aqueous solution of NiS04 at pH 4. Further work on this method was reported in the literature.28-31 In this paper, experiments on the anodic dissolution of white metal in aqueous copper sulfate solution are reported. EXPERIMENTAL White metal, Table I, obtained from The Anaconda Co., was cast in form of anodes 10 by 7.5 by 1 cm, Fig. 1. The anodes are mechanically strong and do not break easily; when polished they gave a shiny gray metallic appearance. From the chemical composition shown in Table I, it can be seen that the atomic ratio Cu:S corresponds approximately to the formula CU2.06S. The copper in excess to the formula Cu2S is most probably present as a separate phase since metallic copper could be seen under the microscope, Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows the X-ray diffraction pattern of white metal which matches fairly well with that of reagent-grade Cu2S.

Cappelen Smith, at a dinner held in the Hotel Commodore, New York, on Nov.' 10, 1920. Prof. Waldemar Lindgren, president of the society, in giving the medal, said: "By the advancement of the science of hydrometallurgy, by the construction of plants on a scale audacious in their conception, by the successful overcoming of all sorts of difficulties, you have placed your name among those who occupy the very front rank among the hydrometallurgists. In recognition of this distinguished contribution to the science of metallurgy, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America now awards you its gold medal."

MORE improvements have probably been made in the diamond-drill field in the past decade than were accomplished in the entire prior period since diamond drilling was discovered in 1864 by a French engineer named Leschot. True, machines were improved, and new accessories were adopted from time to time up to 1929, but no radical changes were made. The basic principle instituted during the early years of the industry were still in use in 1929. At that time, practically the only diamonds used were "black diamonds" or "carbon." These came from Brazil through a rather round- about route, and by the time they got to the drilling trade their cost was excessive-$175 per carat and even higher at the peak. Perhaps because of this. or perhaps because of increased competition, the industry sought ways to reduce expenses even in the face of constantly increased labor costs due to higher wages and reduction in hours worked. The solution seemed to rest in two things-use of a cheaper cutting medium to replace the carbon diamond and the development of new machines to drill faster and thus produce more hole per shift of operation.
