This paper gives a brief account of the geologic and production problems encountered in the Grass Creek oil field, the methods used in their solution, and the beneficial results obtained from the work. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance received from J. H. Pearson and Miss Ninettta A. Davis in the collection of the data and the preparation of the cross-sections. Permission for its publication was given by the officials of the Midwest Refining Co. and the Ohio Oil Co. The Grass Creek oil field is located in Ts. 98-99 W., R. 46 N., Hot Springs County, Wyo. The productive area includes about 2 1/2 mi. (4 km.) on the apex of a great anticlinal fold occupying more than 150 sq. mi. Fig. 1 shows the structural contours of the field. Oil was dicovered in the field in June, 1914; development proceeded rapidly and production rose to a maximum in 1918. The marketed production has been approximately as follows: Barrels Barrels 1915.................... 94,073.5 1918................... 2,946,774.27 1916................... 1,404,183.97 1919................... 2,000,584.84 1917.................... 2,780,697.51 1920................... 1,485,080.94 About 350 wells, 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) deep, have been drilled to reach the upper oil sands; two companies, the Ohio Oil Co. and the Midwest Refining Co., operate the entire field. The principal producing sands in the field are members of the Frontier Formation, a series of sands and shales occuring in the upper portion of the Colorado Group of the Upper Cretaceous seriee. These Frontier, or "Wall Creek" sands are also productive in the Salt Creek, Big Muddy, and Elk Basin fields and, therefore, are much the most important reservoirs of light oil in Wyoming. At Grass Creek, the sands in the Formation are more numerous than in the other fields and much less uniform in thickness and character. Forty-six alloys covering the complete concentration range of the Nb-Rh system were examined by metallographic and X-ray methods; solubility limits of terminal ad intermediate phases and transformation and solidus temperatures were determined. There are nine intermediate phases; two eutectic, five peritectic, two eutectoid, and three peritectnid reactions were encountered. The experimental methods and the constitution diagram are described in Part I. Part 11 deals with the crys -tallography and relation of the intermediate phases. The Nb-Rh system was selected for study for three reasons: first, it was hoped that the anticipated similarity of the Nb-Rh phase diagram to the Ta-Rh1 and Ta-Ir2 diagrams treated earlier (see also Ref. 3) and to the Nb-1r4 diagram treated simultaneously would allow a crystallographic and comparative evaluation of the intermediate phases in these related systems; second, it was likely that the previous experimental methods could be carried over without significant change; and third, it was expected that the interesting mechanical properties of the a1 phase of the Ta-Rh and Ta-Ir systems would also be encountered in similar phases of the new systems, and that these phases could be investigated more closely. The phase diagram had not been treated fully in the literature; only brief surveys of some intermediate phases were found.5-7 It was attempted to cover the details of the phase boundaries, Part I, as well as to present the crystallography of the intermediate phases, Part 11. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Specimen Preparation and Treatment. The following high-purity starting materials were used. 1) Niobium powder, 99.8 pct pure, mesh size -60 +200, from Wah Chang Corp., Albany, Ore. The analysis furnished by the supplier showed the following major impurities: Ta, <500 ppm; Zr, <500 ppm; 0, 300 ppm; Fe, 280 ppm; Ti, <I50 ppm; W, Si, <100 ppm; C, N, 30 ppm; all other impurities, <30 ppm. 2) Rhodium powder, ground sponge, 99.9+ pct pure, mesh size -80, from J. I. EARLY FURNACES. COPPER blast-furnace construction in America has long recognized a general standard in the rectangular mater jacketed shaft with separate forehearth. The details, however, and especially those relating to shaft dimensions, have had to meet a great variety of conditions, and show no uniformity whatever. Selecting a few of the present day Western plants, we find furnace lengths varying from 12.5 to 87 ft., widths at tuyere level from 42 to 84 in., and heights above tuyeres from 5 ft. 4 in. to 22 ft. 4 in. ; and comparing present designs with those of the past, we meet contrasts no less striking. Unlike its transverse section, the length of a furnace has come to depend rather on the size of unit desired than on the requirements of smelting ; and if the question of length be ignored, several of the various existing designs can be grouped together on the basis of a common transverse section. This section, having a width at tuyere level of 56 in. and a height above tuyeres of 18 ft., was developed at Great Falls, and the story of its development contains some interesting features. Ground was broken for the Great Falls works in the spring of 1891. DURING the fury of the conflict it was believed quite generally that World War II was being fought for and would accomplish a permanent peace. Yet, before the guns were actually stilled on all fronts, the American people realized that the devastated world would continue to be dominated by suspicion and uncertainty. The misunderstandings which rapidly developed indicated that it may prove unwise to rely wholly on mutual international agreements and contracts to avoid war. Before the celebrations of V-Day died down serious thought was being given toward measures for preparedness for the next conflict. Along with a realization of the enormous loss of life caused by the destructive forces of war, the American people came to understand the seriousness of the rapid and unwarranted depletion of our natural resources. During the last half of 1945 the question of stock-piling strategic and critical raw materials for a future national emergency became an intensely live subject.

BY the term making an "electrical log" the authors designate an operation conceived for the purpose of determining electrically the characters of formations traversed in drilling, the determination being carried out by means of measuring the electrical resistivities of the rocks along the uncased portions of drill-holes. As in the case of an ordinary core record, this process connotes a geological studs of the strata, and for that reason it is given a similar designation. The paper is divided into three parts, of which the first deals with the resistivities of rocks in general, since it is through this electrical parameter that they are to be characterized. The second deals with the technique, and the third with the description of practical applications of the electrical logs.

Catalytic purifiers are widely used as exhaust treatment devices on diesel equipment in confined spaces. The paper summarizes some studies carried out at the University of Lulea on diesel exhaust purifiers. The main purpose has been to elucidate important chemical activities of catalysts useful for the improvement of their effect. The effects of platinum catalysts on exhaust constituents such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, unburned gaseous hydrocarbons, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are discussed. Also pointed out are the great differences in catalyst activity and advantages/disadvantages associated with the catalysts.

In aqueous solution, an oxide surface is considered to consist of positively charged surface sites, MOH, neutral surface sites MOH, and negatively charged surface sites MO-. From the mass action law, equations for the distribution of these sites have been derived in terms of the hydrogen ion concentration in solution and the point of zero charge of the oxide. Experiments on the flotation of futile were carried out with sulfonates and amines which are collectors that physisorb, and with oleate, which is a collector that chemisorbs. Flotation response was found to correlate with the site distribution model. A similar correlation was found with published data on iron oxide potation.

THE application of aviation to mining and petroleum operations, on the basis of economy and attainment, has become a demonstrated fact. According to Dominion Government records, 30. Canadian companies engaged in air transportation with northland mining camps, carried 13,000 tons of freight in 1935, and in 1936 carried 16,000 tons. In addition, many mining companies used planes to transport prospectors with canoes, outboard motors, gasoline drums and supplies to remote locations, and one company maintained a plane to take radium-bearing ore from its mine on Great Bear Lake nearly 1000 miles south to the rail-way at Waterways, Alberta. Heavy pieces of mining machinery weighing 2 tons are being carried by Ford trimotor planes over the Andes, at an altitude of not less than 15,000 feet. At Bulolo, New Guinea, 17,500 tons of disassembled gold-dredging equipment has been flown over inaccessible terrain, while supplies and building materials for a, community of 1000 whites have been transported by airplane. A 3 1/2-ton shaft was carried on one notable trip, while at another time an automobile, 2 tons of rice and a large safe went over the mountains in one plane. Fig. 1 shows an electric generator that was carried by plane to Bulolo.

AS previously announced, Van. H. Manning has resigned as director of the Bureau of Mines, effective June 1, to become director of research with the newly organized American Petroleum Institute. Doctor Manning has been connected with the Department of the Interior for 34 years, having been civil engineer with the Geological Survey, from 1885 to 1910, previous to his connection with the Bureau of Mines which was organized in the latter year. Doctor Manning was appointed to an administrative position in the new Bureau under Joseph A. Holmes, its first director, and on Jan. 1, 1911, was made assistant director.
