ALTHOUGH the exclusion of foreigners and private owners from participation in the development of the. Russian oil fields prevents first-hand information being obtained, both official and private news indicate a growing appreciation of the value of the country's oil resources. Notwithstanding the suppression of that initiative and energy which only ambition can adequately stimulate, the industry is progressing and exports of products are assuming an importance that cannot be disregarded as an economic factor in the world's oil business. The following notes and observations must be regarded mainly as the views of one who has closely followed the fortunes of Russian oil, when considering the changes that have taken place in geological knowledge and oil-field technique, which have so profoundly modified oil-fields methods. Russia is fortunate in having retained the services of. a few scientists and technologists whose devotion to science has superseded their personal inclinations, and to these few men must be attributed the slow, but nevertheless striking, progress that has been made. The productive oil fields of Russia are centered around the Caspian Sea which, with its connected river system, constitutes such an ideal means of internal distribution for products. From the group of oilfields of which the. city of Baku forms a center, oil is pumped to Black-town, a suburb of Baku, where all the refineries are situated. The next important group of oil fields is located in the Terek district near Grosny, where refineries are erected and the products are piped or carried by tank cars to Petrovsk for the internal Russian market, or sent to the Black Sea by rail. A third oil field is spread over the province of Uralsk, north of the Caspian, Sea, the main port of outlet being Gourief, at the mouth of the River Ural. In Trans-Caspia there are two oil-field centers, one near Krasnovodsk on Chelekan Island, and one in Central Asia at Ferghana. The product of the former fields is transported to Baku for treatment, while the output of the Turkestan field is refined and consumed locally, mainly by the railway.

ONE of the important hazards in coal mining is the danger of ignition of explosive mixtures of methane and air or coal dust and air, or both, by the explosives used in blasting the coal. It has long been recognized that certain explosives are more dangerous than others in this respect. In America and abroad, government testing stations have been established for officially passing on the suitability of explosives for use in coal mines. In this country the Federal government is given no power to enforce the use of the approved explosives but merely publishes from time to time, through the Bureau of Mines, those explosives which have passed the tests necessary to place them on the list for use in coal mines. In spite of this lack of police power, the increase in the use of permissible explosives since the promulgation of the first list in 1909 has been rapid. In 1912, only 8 per cent. of the explosives used in coal mines were permissible; in 1925, this figure had increased to 25 per cent. While the past record of permissible explosives has been most gratifying, it is very desirable that we pave the way for further improvement in explosives and blasting methods by learning more about the mechanism of ignition of gas and coal dust by explosives. To this end a considerable amount of investigative work already has been carried out and a large amount yet remains to be done. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss briefly the effect of the characteristics of explosives and method of loading in the borehole on the liability of a blown-out shot to ignite explosive mixtures of gas or dust. For an account of the methods by which an explosive is tested for permissibility for use in coal mines, the reader is referred to Schedule 17-A of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

Geostatistics originated as an application of a classical statistical concept, multivariate linear regression, to the solution of a practical problem, estimation of reserves in the South African gold mines. In this respect, geostatistics should only be considered as one statistical method among many that can be used to evaluate mineral deposits. R.F. Shurtz has studied possible applications of power spectrum analysis to the same problem, and these studies may result in future improvements over the presently accepted geostatistical methodology. The intention of R.F. Shurtz's paper, as stated by the author, is to "relate geostatistical doctrine to classical statistical and mathematical concepts." However, in this comparison the "geostatistical doctrine" appears to include only the simplest among the geostatistical concepts advocated by G. Matheron, while "classical statistical and mathematical concepts" are limited nearly exclusively to power spectrum analysis. The author attempts to compare the two methods, and to prove the theoretical superiority of power spectrum analysis. Unfortunately, a number of errors and incorrect statements are made concerning both the theory and application of geostatistics, which invalidate the comparison and the conclusions drawn from it. The errors made in this comparison are understandable since few scientists can claim to have expertise in two theories as diverse as those compared here. In many respects, this paper is reminiscent of polemics which occurred 15 to 20 years ago when geostatistics and trend surface analysis were compared. Each method has its own merit and limitations, and none can claim absolute superiority. The most misleading statements found in R.F. Shurtz's paper are: The definition of the semivariogram given on page 1923 is incorrect. If the maximum difference between two assays is 1, the maximum value of the semivariogram is not 1, as stated, but 0.5. The comparison of geostatistics and linear regression made in the section entitled "Insufficiency of Classical Statistics?" is not valid. The semivariogram of the sample values given in Table 1 (page 1919) has a parabolic shape indicative of a linear drift. When such a semivariogram is observed, the simplest method of geostatistical estimation (linear kriging with unknown mean) is not applicable. Universal kriging must be used that takes trends into account. On page 1921 it is stated that the use of trends "is officially disparaged in geostatistics." Again on page 1924 mention is made to "Matheron's commitment to random process (intrinsic) models and his present categorical rejection of deterministic (trend) models for mineral deposit evaluation." Indeed, from articles published by geostatisticians in the 1960s one could infer that geostatistical methods are not compatible with the presence of trends. However, even the simplest

Although confident of its ability to meet any demands that may be made, the petroleum-refining industry is not complacent about the situation and realizes that the quantities of petroleum products to be furnished are so enormous and so far beyond what was previously estimated that the full cooperative effort of the industry must be exerted. Establishment by the President in May of the Office of Petroleum Coordinator for Defense with Secretary of the Interior Ickes at its head, plus the formation of the Petroleum Industry Council for Defense, in November, provide the channels for united endeavor within the industry and the means for gearing that endeavor in full harmony with the nation's needs. Great strides have been made and a rapid understanding of the situation and the magnitude of the task is being attained by all concerned. Refining, by constant study and development, by willingness to experiment and install new processes, and to replace older plants with more efficient equipment, had kept on a high plane of efficiency and progress. Working under the free competitive system, it built up its establishments until, as expressed in last year's report, it was easily able to supply any domestic demand that might be placed on it. Turning the United States into the arsenal not only of itself but of the united nations resisting aggression, however, in- creased the call for practically all petroleum products and in particular 100-octane aviation gasoline and high-viscosity aviation lubricating oils. Refining Capacity With over four million barrels a day of crude oil being charged to stills at the year's end, oil refining had broken all records and faced the necessity of further increasing its size to supply the ever-increasing demand for products, some of which, like 100-octane aviation gasoline, were research laboratory curiosities a few years ago. Although the refining capacity of the United States is listed at 4,860,000 bbl., about 800,000 bbl. of this is economically unavailable because of plant location or type. To meet the increasing needs, additional capacity of another half million barrels may have to be built in suitable locations and designed with an eye toward maximum production of aviation gasoline but with inherent flexibility to make it possible to vary and interchange with production of motor gasoline, furnace oils, and other products as necessity dictates. The mining laws relating to winding-ropes in some of the German provinces are very strict, and severe tests have to be periodically made to see that the ropes in use come up to the prescribed standard. A few notes on the method of testing the ropes and the results obtained may be of interest to the members of the Institute. Permission must be given by the Inspector of Mines to put up a winding-plant; and previous to installation a full report made by the manager, clearly setting forth all details of the shaft, the pit-head, engines and appliances appertaining thereto has to be sent to the mining officials. Accompanying each subsequent report, further details, such as the name of the firm supplying the rope, construction, quality of steel, date of installment, weight per meter, length, particulars of the safetycatches, cages, etc., must be given. At least one spare rope must be kept at ever? shaft ready for use in case of emergency. The rope must hang in the shaft, with cage attached, not less than twenty-four hours before it is used for winding; and it must have undergone a severe test in the manner hereafter described. The laws prescribe that when a rope is continually in use it must be tested every three months; but if the rope is only used every few days it must be tested at least every six months, in the presence of the superior officer; and notification of the date of testing has to be sent to the Bergrath two days before the test is made, in order that he can personally superintend the operation if he chooses. Should winding have been stopped for a long time, it is not necessary to test every six months; but before the rope can be used again it must be tested.

A method is described for the numerical solution of the diffusion equation with a composition-dependent diffusion coefficient and applied to the radial growth of a cylinder; the radial growth of a sphere, and the symmetric growth of an ellipsoid. Sample applications of the method are made to the growth of particles of proeutectoid ferrite into austenite. RECENTLY&apos; we described a method for numerical solution of the diffusion equation with a composition-dependent diffusion coefficient for the case of the growth of a planar interface. In this paper we extend this method to describe the radial growth of a cylinder, the radial growth of a sphere, and the symmetric growth of an ellipsoid. In the latter case, limiting values of the axial ratios of the ellipsoid reduces the problem to one of a cylinder, a sphere, or a plane depending on the axial ratio. A check on these limiting values is made in the results section. In all of these cases we consider growth from zero size. A natural consequence of this assumption as applied to the sphere, for example, is that the radius of the sphere is proportional to the square root of the time. This is consistent with the condition that the radius is zero initially, i.e., grows from zero size. It may be argued that it is more realistic to consider particles which grow from a nucleus of finite initial size; even in this case the analysis of this paper is likely to be applicable. This can be seen if a comparison is made of the work of Cable and Evans,2 who consider a sphere of initially finite size growing by diffusion in a matrix with a constant diffusion coefficient, with the results of Scriven3 for growth from zero size. This comparison shows that the rates of growth in each case differ trivially by the time the particle has grown to about five times its initial size." This investigation is a generalization of those of Zener,4 Ham,5 and Horvay and cahn6 to the situation often encountered experimentally, in which the diffusion coefficient varies with concentration. First let us consider each of the cases separately. THE growth of human knowledge is an evolutionary process. His-torically our separate sciences came into existence as people became interested in various apparently unrelated domains of phenomena, and in this manner we acquired the sciences of physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and geology. As various of these sciences became established, cognizance of them came to be taken by the universities and in this manner there arose the traditional departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and geology of our American universities. As there was no particular rationality in the boundaries separating the various sciences, in the university departments the jurisdiction of each has assumed quite arbitrary limits. In the domain of earth phenomena the first science to grow up was that of geology, which arose originally from the activities of the collectors of rocks, minerals and fossils. Thus geology evolved as a descriptive science dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena for which elementary rational explanations were offered. The traditional treat-ment of phenomena by the science of geology has rarely been with more than an elementary regard for the fact that these phenomena were also phenomena of physics and chemistry. Since the latter part of the nineteenth century, a new approach to terrestrial phenomena has been emerging and becoming of so great a significance that it can no longer be ignored. This approach has been made by people trained primarily in the sciences of physics and chemistry, who have investigated terrestrial phenomena as constituting phenomena of, their respective sciences. In this manner we have acquired the so-called "borderland sciences" of geophysics, the physics of the earth, and of geochemistry, the chemistry of the earth. Neither of these fields is new, having arisen chiefly at the hands of European investigators during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The European uni-versities have long since given official recognition at least to geophysics, by the establishment of departments or institutes of geophysics, which are on a par with ,the university departments of the other sciences.

Alluvial gold was first discovered in Guiana in 1852, in the sands of the Arataye river, by Paulino, a Braziliaii convict. During the following years, gold was found also in the rivers Orapu, CirubQ, etc. In 1873 the famous placers of the Sinnamary system were opened: Saint-Elie, Dieu-Merci, Adieu-Vat, and Couriege. This group of mines has produced nearly $10,000,000, according to official records, not including the gold that escaped the taxes. The discoverer was a mulatto named Vitalo. Except in a few rich spots, the gold was rather evenly distributed along the creeks. In one instance, gold was found in the red dirt from the slope of a hill, which, after transport to the creek, gave an amount of 150 kilograms. The placers of the Mana system, Enfin, Elysee, Pas-Trop-Tot, date from 1878, and their production has been about %g5,000,000. In 1888, the Awa placers, along the boundary bet.ween the French and Dutch Guianas, on the Maroni and its tributaries, were discovered. They have yielded $12,000,000. The only industrial company, the Dutch Guiana Freiich Minillg Co., produced in 15 years about 2,500 kg. of gold, worth $1,500,000. From 1893 dates the famous Carsewene discovery, in territory then in dispute between France and Brazil. A settlement was made recently in favor of Brazil, by arbitration of the Switzerland State Council. Carsewene is said to have produced about $18,000,000 in six years (1894-1900), but not even one-fourth of tho production went through French Quiana and

This name is applied to the present mining law, as enacted in 1872 and since, to indicate its leading characteristic—in which it differs from all previous mining laws of this or any other country. The earlier act, passed in 1866, was practically the first attempt of Congress to deal with the question of mining titles upon the public domain. It was framed after nearly twenty years of acquiescence on the part of the Government in the self-constituted tribunals, officials, rules, and customs of the mining districts. In its recognition of these, and in several other particulars, the act of 1866 was open to serious criticisms. It is the purpose of this paper, not to trace the history of legislation on this subject, or show in detail what were the faults of the earlier law, but rather, by a discussion of certain aspects of the present law, to point out how great a revoluition it has effected in the rights of mining locators, and to indicate some of the difficulties attending its application. In the attempt to correct the vagueness of the act of 1866 an entirely new elernent was introduced into the law, bringing with it a new set of difficulties. Under the act of 1866 and the miners&apos; customs which it followed, the lode was the thing claimed and subsequently acquired by patent. And the claim to a given number of feet on the longitudinal course of the lode was rooted in &apos;a discovery of any part of the lode in any part of the claim. ("Extensions" could in many districts—perhaps universally—be located and claimed on the strength of the discovery in the principal claim to which they referred; but this is a point not essential to the present discussion.) It was not necessary to find the outcrop or the upper edge of a lode in order to lay a valid location upon it. An explorer, sinking a shaft and intersecting a lode not already discovered and claimed by another, could claim by that discovery the number of feet along that lode which the local laws might permit (not exceeding the maximum set by the United States statute) whether his sur-

TRIAL installations of rock bolts, of the slit-rod-and-wedge type, were under way at several units of Day Mines, Inc., when Korean hostilities interrupted the already slow deliveries of steel bars to the Coeur d&apos;Alene district. Factory-made bolts had not yet been put on the local market, so the program was halted for lack of supplies. Interest was revived by a visitor&apos;s description of wooden roof bolts. These were said to have been used briefly with apparent success in a coal mine, until apprehension voiced by the U. S. Bureau of Mines caused the practice to be suspended. To make wooden bolts for trial in ground support, Day Mines acquired a second-hand doweling machine equipped with two cutting heads, one to turn out the desired round rods of 2-in. diam, the other to turn out 1-in. rods to be used as powder-tamping sticks. This machine was installed in the all-weather sawmill of the Hercules mine unit at Burke, Idaho, where fabrication of the wooden bolts commenced early in 1951. Most of the mining in the Coeur d&apos;Alene district is along steeply dipping veins in shaly quartzite and argillite of Algonkian age. Ground support commonly is required in zones where the rocks have been sheared, brecciated, and hydrothermally altered. Pressure from the sidewalls is more troublesome than weight overhead, but both increase with the size of the mine opening. Caving may come from a progressive sloughing of irregular rock fragments or from an exfoliation and buckling of the layered wall rocks. The disintegration is thought to develop from an initial elastic expansion of the rock toward the newly-created mine opening, followed by the dilation of many tiny partings in the rock by absorption of water. As the partings widen, masses of rock develop weight and become free to fall. The function of rock bolts is to prevent or retard widening of partings in the rock supported. Wooden Bolts, Wedges and Headboards Bolt assembly used by Day Mines consists of a bolt 4 or 6 ft long, two wedges 16 in. long, and a headboard 30 in. long, Fig. 1. All four pieces are made of local red (Douglas) fir, either green or well-soaked in the mill pond before it enters the sawmill. Bolts are fabricated from cants, 2 1/4 in. sq, cut from relatively straight-grained timber with a minimum of knots and trimmed to 4- and 6-ft lengths. The bolt then is turned in the doweling machine from 21/4 in. sq to 2 in. diam round, except for a 4-in. length at one end which is left full square to provide the striking head and the shoulder that holds the headboard in position for wedging. The foot end of the bolt is slit with a thin saw for a length of about 16 in., thereby making a slot to receive the wedge against which the bolt is driven for anchorage at the bottom of the rock hole. A similar slit, 12 in. long, is made in the opposite (head) end of the bolt to receive the second wedge, which crowds the headboard against the ground at the collar of the rock hole and puts the bolt in tension. The second slot is aligned 90" from the plane of the first slot to avoid Longitudinal splitting and is notched out slightly to allow easier insertion of the collar wedge after the bolt has been driven to bottom. To prevent splitting the headboard by spreading action of the head wedge, this slot is oriented at 90" to the grain of the headboard when the pieces are assembled, Fig. 2. The wedges are similar to standard mine wedges, but more slender; they are cut 1 7/8 in. wide and 1 in. thick at the heel and taper out in 16 in. of length. The headboard, or bearing plate, is not necessary for some types of ground but generally is desirable because it helps the bolt to support an area of loose, friable rock and reduces the tendency for the rock at the collar of the hole to split away from the wedged head by distributing the pressure over a wider rock surface. The headboard may be a 24-to 30-in. length of 3-in. plank, 8 to 12 in. wide, but a similar length of rounded sawmill slab serves equally well at 20 pct of the cost. A hole of 2-in. diam is bored or punched through the center of the headboard, either at 90" or at various high angles to its surface. The bolt is inserted to its shoulder through this hole, then driven into the rock hole. Bolts, wedges, and headboards are given a full timber preservative treatment to inhibit rot. Bundles of each are immersed in a warm saturated solution of Osmose salts in water for 48 hr, removed, dripped dry, and stored in a relatively humid underground depot to cure. Most wooden rock bolts used by Day Mines are 4 ft long. Holes to receive them, about 42 in deep and 2 1/8 in. in diam, are drilled into the rock&apos; to be supported, nearly normal to the periphery of the mine opening. The type of drill used is dictated by convenience: stoper, jackleg, or jumbo-mounted drifter. Correct depth of the hole is assured by use of a measuring stick that has been cut to the proper distance from drill chuck to the ground at the collar of the hole when a standard length drill rod is at the bottom. The bolt is seated to the shoulder through the hole in the headboard, the foot-end wedge is placed in its slot, and the assembly is inserted into the rock hole. ALTHOUGH nearly 10 pct of the total tonnage of coal produced annually within the United States is handled by bulk freighters on the Great Lakes, very little of the detail connected with it has been published other than occasional newspaper stories and publication of tonnage statistics. Of the total tonnage floated on the Lakes each year some 10,000,000 is stored and distributed from the port of Duluth Superior, at the western end of Lake Superior commonly known as the Head of the Lakes. This port has the largest single area concentration of coal docks in the world. Since this area contains the largest ore docks, the largest movable material handling bridge, the largest and highest grain elevator and the largest coal briquetting plant in the world, it is entirely fitting and proper that here also should be located the largest coal dock and what we believe to be the worlds largest clam shell. Of the sixteen coal docks operated by ten companies, five are owned and operated by the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. which has two docks on the Superior, Wis. water-front and three docks in Duluth, Minn. It is with these five docks that we are primarily concerned. GENERAL HISTORY In the summer of 1871 a small sailing vessel entered the harbor of Duluth Superior with the first commercial coal cargo. All the coal brought up that first year did not amount to more than 3000 tons. During the year 1877 the first dock equipped for handling coal was built in Duluth. Coal receipts increased to 52,785 tons in 1879 the first year for which an official record was kept. Since then the volume of water-borne coal to the Head of the Lakes steadily increased to a maximum of 12,688,321 tons in the year 1923. This tonnage was nearly equalled in the year 1927 and the next highest tonnage recent year was in 1946 when 10,105,703 tons were unloaded. The average annual bring-up over a ten year period 1938 to 1947 was 8,605,231 tons. Approximately 30 pct of the coal unloaded at the Head of the Lakes is handled over the docks of the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. Competition of other fuels coupled with expansion of coal fields in the mid-west have held coal receipts for Duluth-Superior at a relatively constant figure during the last eight years although the total tonnage of coal floated on the Great Lakes has more than doubled in the past 25 years. THE mineral production of Dutch Guiana has been of little consequence. This is due to several rea-sons. Inaccessibility is probably the greatest factor, for the Guianas are off the main commercial route. More or less closely related causes are the tropi-cal climate and the temperament of the inhabitants. Small quantities of gold have come from Dutch Guiana for many years, and recently bauxite has entered the list of exports. It is likely that other minerals may be found in commercial quantities. The Colony is on the northeast coast of South Amer-ica. It is known by two names, that of Dutch Guiana, and that of Surinam. - British Guiana (Demerara) adjoins it on the west, French Guiana (Cayenne) on the east, and Brazil on the south. It covers an area of approximately 58,000 sq. miles. The population, in the. neighborhood of a hundred thousand,, is small, but the variety of races and the sub-sequent mixtures of these is almost incredible. This unusual and colorful population readily falls into three groups, (1) those of the bush, (2) those of the planta-tion, and (3) those of the towns. The bush people con-sist of two groups, the Indians and the bush-negro. The Indians, of whom there are but a little over two thousand, keep entirely to themselves, lead a. very primi-tive existence, and rarely come into the towns. The bush-negro gives the touch of human life to the thick jungles. A descendant of escaped slaves of by-gone days, he is at present a proud, stalwart, happy, clean, moral, carefree and ease-loving individual-a distinct personality. Work is not his pal, although he does cheerfully that which is necessary for his existence. He will transport passengers and goods in his dugout and guide the stranger through the jungles, but that is all. The plantations employ some negroes, but more Javanese, imported as contract labor from the East Indies. Paramaribo, the only large town in Dutch Guiana, is the center of all government, commercial, and social activities. It has a motley population of 40,000, in-cluding negroes native to Dutch Guiana and many from all parts of the West Indies. In addition, there are Javanese, Chinese, and some Hindus. The two latter groups control most of the retail trade. The Dutch and a few scattered Germans are the only Europeans. All of the higher government offices are held by the Dutch, the others are filled from the ranks of the natives. Marriages and intermarriages among these various groups have produced types that defy almost any effort to decipher an individual&apos;s forbears. Dutch is the official language, but among the people a jargon known as Tahki-Tahki holds sway. English is taught in the schools, consequently many speak it, and many more can make themselves understood in that language.

CONSIDERING the extent of the gold-fields of Nova Scotia, which occupy an area of 6000 to 7000 square miles, a few words as to the cost of extracting and reducing the ores may prove of interest. The veins are for the most part narrow, 4 to 12 inches being the usual width, while a 2-foot vein is considered a large one; but they offer many advantages, inasmuch as the ore is easily treated, wages are low, and machinery and supplies can be transported by water to within from 1 to 15 miles of the different mining districts. The Salmon River vein is a notable exception to the above rule as to width. It ranges from 4 to 20 feet in width. The Hall-Anderson of Fifteen-Mile Stream (where there are several veins) is another, which has proved to be from 3 to 4 feet in width. The ownership of all mining claims is retained by the Crown, but persons wishing to work them can lease as many unoccupied areas as they please for twenty-one years, with option of renewal, on the payment of two dollars for each area, and a royalty of 2 per cent. on all gold extracted. Each area consists of 150 Get along the lode and 250 feet across, upon which a certain amount of work must be done, which by recent law is reduced from one hundred to forty days&apos; work for each area every year. Any person erecting in a district the first mill, having at least 8 stamps, and being at least 10 miles from any other mill, is entitled to a lease of 10 areas, free from advance-payment and from royalty, for twenty-one years. A record must be kept, and filed every quarter at the office of the Commissioner of Mines, of the total number of days&apos; work done on the areas, and a monthly statement of the number of tons crushed, and the actual yield of gold. Gold-mining in Nova Scotia may be said to have commenced with the finding of a nugget of gold in a brook at Tangier in 1858. Sifto Salt Div. of Domtar Chemicals Ltd. has developed a new method for installing roof bolts in the high backs of its 1-million-tpy rock-salt mine at Goderich, Ontario, on the east shore of Lake Huron. The method teams a telescoping- boom hydraulic crane with a specially developed combination auger-drill and bolt-tightening ma- chine. One man, controlling all operations from a basket supported at the end of the crane&apos;s telescoping boom, installs an average of 100 5-ft roof bolts per shift, at heights to 45 ft. The mine has very long backs that are not as stable as might be expected. The result has been that roof scaling has occupied an unusually high percentage of the underground work force. About six years ago, company officials decided to go to 100% roof bolting of all backs as a safety measure. The present roof-bolting equipment is the result of a development program instituted at that time to find a faster and more economical method for doing the job.

More wells were drilled in West Texas† during 1944 than in any year since 1941. As compared with 1943, there was an 82.5 per cent increase in the total number of completed wells. The 1646 wells required an estimated 140,715 days to complete for a total of 7,632,249 ft. An average of 85 completion days was required to drill to an average of 4630 ft. This depth is approximately 100 ft. greater than that of the previous year. It is estimated that $100,000,000 was invested in drilled wells. As of Dec. 31, 1944, there were 270 field and 91 wildcat wells being drilled. While an identical number of wells were drilling Dec. 31, 1943, the proportion of wildcats increased in 1944 from 19.7 to 25.2 per cent. During 1944, oil wells were completed in 103 of the 164 fields in West Texas. Of the 1361 oil wells, 385 were in Slaughter, 116 in Fullerton, 63 in North Cowden, 62 in Fuhrman-Mascho, 59 in Wasson, 52 in Westbrook and 47 in North Ward. Approximately 22 per cent of the wildcat drilling was to pre-Permian formations. Despite the increasing proportion of wildcat wells drilled, the wildcat discovery rate has declined since the year 1942. AS compared with 1943, the number of wildcat wells drilled increased from 11.7 to 12.7 per cent and the footage in wildcat exploration increased from 13.3 to 13.8 per cent of the total. The monthly production of crude continued to increase to a peak of 15,336,000 bbl. in October 1944. As compared with a similar peak production in October 1943, there was a 37.3 per cent increase. The yearly production increased from 98,165,-ooo bbl. in 1943 to 159,943,000 bbl. in 1944, an increase of 62.8 per cent. Based upon an assumed average price of $1.00 per barrel and less 1/8 royalty, the gross return to the producer amounts to $140, 000,000. From 1943 to 1944, the average number of producing wells increased 6 per cent while the average daily production per well increased 53.1 per cent. The average daily production per well increased from 17.5 bbl. in 1943 to 26.8 bbl. in 1944. The proportion of flowing wells decreased from 50.5 per cent in January to 49.1 per cent in December 1944. Drilling With the continued shortage of labor and materials, drilling costs have risen sharply. Just how much is difficult to ascertain. Owing to competition for available drilling rigs, contractors are reluctant to assume drilling risks. In consequence, some contracts are let on a cost plus basis, or day work below some specified depth with the operator furnishing part of the consumable materials, such as mud and drilling bits. Contractors are having difficulty in maintaining full and effective drilling crews with insufficient and inexperienced labor. Service companies have inadequate labor and equipment to meet their appointments promptly. Pipe Lines The Gulf Pipe Line Co. increased the capacity of its 10-in. main line by filling in gaps amounting to 75 miles on the loops between Judkins and Weatherford, Texas.

A correlation is also discussed and results reported. INTRODUCTION This investigation is one of several efforts by the authors to provide viscosity data for pure hydrocarbons and mixtures. Results of some pure hydrocarbons and their mix tures have been presented." Several predictive methods and correlations have also been reported.&apos;," This paper presents the experimental viscosity and density data of four natural gases and confirms a correlation in a previous study. APPARATUS The viscometer was described previously. 2,6 A bank of stainless steel pycnometers was included to determine density in conjunction with the viscosity measurements (Fig. I). DATA AND MATERIALS The natural gases were furnished by the Atlantic Richfield Co. (Samples 1 and 21, the Continental Oil Co. (Sample 3) and the Pan American Petroleum Corp. (Sample 4). Table 1 shows the composition of these gases obtained by mass spectrometer analysis. (4) Y = 1.11 -r 0.04 X ........(5) Over the pressure and temperature range studied in this investigation, this equation represents the data on methane, ethane, propane, n-butane and four methane-n-butane mixtures with a standard deviation* of ? 1.89 per cent. Density data by Sage and Lacey" were used to fit the equations. Eq. 2 gives reliable values of the viscosity of light hydrocarbons without prior knowledge of experimental viscosity values, but accurate density data must be available. Eq. 2 was used to predict viscosity values for the natural gases studied in this paper. The particular set of parameters contained in Eqs. 3 through 5 gave values that reproduced experimental data within 25 per cent. Needless to say, in using Eq. 2 better density values will give better viscosity results. However, those engineers who do not have accurate density values at hand or the time, or such facilities as a library, computer, etc. readily available, may feel uneasy in using Eq. 2. Therefore, the authors sought the easiest but by no means best density prediction method, which was reported by Kaf 30 years ago. A set of density values, which were calculated based on Kay&apos;s method, and a generalized compressibility factor chart were used to fit Eq. 2. The results are:

DUE to wartime secrecy restrictions a large part of the technical information developed by government and industrial laboratories was withheld from distribution. Much of this information has now been released or "declassified" and reports of technical work carried out during the war in allied and enemy countries are also becoming available. Information on the latter subject has been augmented by the work of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Corps of the U. S. Army. Through the Joint Chiefs of Staff, rep¬resentatives of this Corps co-operated with the British Combined Intelligence Observations Subcommittee, and some of the observations were made by combined personnel of both groups. The U. S. Government has undertaken the indexing and abstracting of all of this information in the Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports, a weekly bulletin which appeared first early in 1946. Other publications, such as the Bulletin of the British Iron and Steel Institute and The Metals Review of the American Society for Metals, provide abstracts of domestic and foreign magazine articles and papers presented to technical societies. However, they do not cover the industrial and government reports recently released by the Government nor the reports of the Army investigators hence the new bibliography is a welcome addition to our metallurgical library.
