WALLACE MCKEEHAN, Douglas, Ariz. (communication to the Secretary*).-In going over this report, which I have done very carefully, I find that the summary as composed deals with the various problems almost entirely from the employer's standpoint and that practically no consideration is given to the employee's point of view. An experience of 3 ½ years as safety inspector, and almost 30 years as workman-and official, has convinced me that any plan for the betterment of working conditions which will achieve any degree of success must give the workmen their share of responsibility and allow them full participation. The company may finance and direct the movement, but its ultimate success depends upon the support given by the workmen. The cooperation of the men doing the actual work is so essential that all writers insist that this must be secured, but they do not agree as to how this can best be done.

THE remarkable outflow of natural gas recently developed in Western Pennsylvania, and along the valley of the Ohio and its tributaries, has called attention to an important series of patents for improvements in glass-fnrnaces and the manufacture of glass, which the brothers Siemens have made since 1872. The basement-patent of this series, is No. 127,806 of the U. S. Patent office, and is of date June 11th, 1872. This has been followed by eleven other patents (including one re-issue), all for improvements in glass-furnaces, or methods of manufacture, of which the latest is of date July 11th, 1882. Nine of these patents were issued in 1880-82. The following is the list of these patents, in order of dates, viz.: 1872. June 11th. No. 127,806 (U. S. office), Improvement in glass-furnaces; 17 sheets drawings, 5 pages text. This is the basement-patent. 1877. April 17th. No. 139,800. A new logging method, called induction logging, is described; it measures the conductivity, or resistivity, of the strata traversed by a bore hole. The apparatus, which is briefly described, comprises a coil system coupled with the ground by induction, so that there is no need for direct contact with the mud, or with the formations. For that reason, the method is particularly useful in oil base mud, and it was first applied to that case. A discussion concerning the respective contribution of each region of ground in the vicinity of the coil system is given. Through the concept of a geometrical factor, it is demonstrated that the total signal, which measures the apparent conductivity, is the summation of the partial products — geometrical factor by conductivity — for the different regions of the ground under consideration. It is thus possible to establish, for each type of coil arangement, investigation characteristic as well as departure curves and correction charts for beds of various thicknesses. This should greatly facilitate the quantative interpretation of the field logs, even in cases where such interpretation would have been difficult on electric logs taken with electrodes. It is also shown that focussing combinations of coils can be used, which give, directly on the recorded log, a value close to the true conductivity, even for fairly thin beds, thus eliminating in most cases the need for corrections. These focussing systems also give a sharper definition of the boundaries between successive strain.

The creep-rupture properties of nickel, in as-prestrained or prestrain-polygonized condition, were studied at 1300°F and 4000 psi, and also at 700°F and 26,000 psi. An improvement of strength was noted in both the as -prestrained and the prestrain-polygonized tests at each temperature. The as-prestrained tests, however, showed superior creep resistance to the prestrain-polygonized ones. From the results of X-ray and etch-pit studies, the strengthc gain was interpreted in terms of dislocation density and the stability of preformed substructures. COLD work is known to improve the strength properties of metals at low temperatures. At high temperatures, however, the strength improvement is often lost if gross structural changes, such as re-crystallization, take place prior to or during the test. Even in the absence of recrystallization, a prestrained metal may undergo structural changes— polygonization and the formation of well-defined subgrains—which importantly effect the resultant properties. The relationship between substructure and creep properties has received considerable attention in recent years. The work of wood1 indicated that the creep strength of aluminum and its alloys was closely related to the subgrain size. Hazlett and Hansen,2 and Ancker, Hazlett, and parker,3 working with nickel and nickel alloys, had shown that small amounts of prestrain at room temperature followed by a recovery anneal at 800°C (1470°F) improved the strength at both low and high temperatures. The strength gain was attributed to an increase in the number of subgrain boundaries as a result of the prestrain-polygonization treatment. More recently Coldren and Freeman4 studied the effect of substructures on the creep rate of nickel at 1550°F. Their conclusions indicated that the substructure size as measured by the number of boundaries was the factor that controlled the creep rate. In addition, the perfection of the subgrain boundary has been indicated to have an important role on the strength.' On the other hand, there are data which disagree with the above observations. Grant, Chaudhuri, Silver, and Ganow6 found no creep strength improvement by a prestraining treatment. In reviewing the role of subgrains on high-temperature creep, Shepard and Dorn7 concluded that the contribution of the subgrains to high-temperature creep strength was a minor one. Guard,8 in a recent study on poly-gonized nickel, has cast doubt on the validity of the postulate that subgrain size controls the creep rate. In the majority of the previous studies, the subgrain boundaries have been singled out as the most important factor in determining creep strength; however, there is no firm theoretical ground for the postulate that the subgrain boundaries act as effective barriers to dislocation motion.B910 Little effort has been directed toward the study of the relationship between creep strength and other structural variables, such as dislocation density, lattice strain,

A proposed method of drilling utilizes sequential detonation of two types of explosive charges delivered to the hole by a conventional drilling fluid through pipe. A shaped charge first produces a long thin hole. A second charge, called a gauging charge, is pumped into the thin hole, explodes, and enlarges it to full gauge. In one suggested configuration, the explosives are contained in cylindrical capsules 4- to 5-ft long. A drilling head is positioned 2- to 3-ft off bottom. When a capsule is pumped to the bottom of the hole and stops, pressure inside the drill pipe increases and differential pressure detonates the explosive. Primacord along the length of the capsule disintegrates the capsule. The debris circulates out of the hole with the drilling fluid. The gauging-charge action was examined using 2-ft cubes of Berea sandstone. The sandstone (18 per cent porosity) was vacuum-saturated with water and surrounded by concrete. To prevent reflected tensile pulses, the acoustical impedance of the concrete matched that of the sandstone. A 750-psig pressure was applied to a drilling fluid within a shaped-charge-formed hole before detonating the gauging charge. In these tests, 190 gm of rock were removed for each gram of explosive detonated. A similar series of experiments on low-porosity (0.40 per cent) metamorphic limestone provided a more rigorous test. Extensive fracturing from the gauging-charge action prevented an estimate of the volume of the expanded hole. The diameter of the hole was irregular, ranging from about 2 to 4 in, or about fivefold larger than the hole created by the shaped charge. INTRODUCTION In the past, explosives have found a varied but somewhat limited use in the oil field. An early well stimulation technique, still in use today, in vo lves shooting ni troglycerin to en large the borehole and to increase matrix permeability near the wellbore. Bullets and jets are now the conventional method of perforating casing and tubing. Detonations are frequently used to "back off" or "shoot off" stuck pipe and, of course, seismo-graphic work has long depended on explosive-generated pulses to find attractive earth structures. Efforts to use explosives in drilling operations have received limited examinations1-3 which, in one respect, is surprising because explosives offer one way to transmit large amounts of energy directly to the bottom of the hole. Recently, Ostrovskii l described a Russian method of drilling with explosives that utilizes small capsules containing explosives which are pumped into the mud stream to the bottom of a borehole. As the capsules leave the end of the drill pipe, a detonation mechanism is armed. Impact detonates the explosive. In another configuration, two liquids (an oxidizing agent and fuel) in the capsule are separated by a frangible membrane. Separately, the liquids are nonexplosive. Near the bottom of the drill pipe, the capsule passes through a narrow constriction which ruptures the membrane. The mixing of the liquids produces an explosive. Impact is again used to detonate the explosive. About the time Ostrovskii was developing his method, Humble Oil & Refining Co. was independently doing research on another explosive drilling concept based on the sequential detonation of two types -of explosive charges. The proposed technique consisted of alternately pumping a shaped charge and then a "gauging charge" down a well. The shaped charge should drill a long, tapered hole, and the gauging charge should expand it to full gauge. This paper presents the visualized drilling concept and gives results of laboratory work which showed that sequential firing of charges can form hole at an attractive charge-to-rock removal ratio. An important finding was that increased environmental pressure, which is to be expected in wells, increases rock removal efficiency of the gauging charge.

Several of the current concepts of brittle fracture involve consideration of the existence of defects or flaws. Griffith 1 observed that the tensile strength of brittle materials was several orders of magnitude less than might be expected from the calculated strength of the molecular bonds. He was able to show that the stress concentration at the tip of an elliptical crack is sufficient to raise the local stress level many fold. He therefore proposed that real materials do contain such stress risers in the form of minute cracks and that this accounts for the rather large difference between theoretical and actual strengths of brittle materials. The degree of stress magnification depends to a great extent upon the orientation of the crack with respect to the general stress system, and to the general geometry of the crack.

An informal discussion on the application of physical chemistry to steelmaking was held during the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1929. Alexander L. Feild presided. In opening the session, Mr. Feild said: We are all familiar with the cooperative mining and metallurgical studies that were begun in 1920 by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and the Mining and Metallurgical Advisory Boards, and in particular with the work on the physical chemistry of steelmaking which was launched under the technical direction of Dr. C. H. Herty, Jr., in May, 1926. It was this work at Pittsburgh more than anything else that was the immediate cause of the formation within the Institute of a committee on the physical chemistry of steelmaking. During the latter part of 1927 a small group of Institute members interested in. the general subject of the physical chemistry of steelmaking undertook the organization of a subcommittee within the Iron and Steel Committee, to foster an active interest in this comparatively new field among the Institute membership and to obtain papers for publication in the Transactions, covering the various phases of the general subject. This plan was conceived by C. E. Meissner, to whose active efforts at the outset as well as during the past year is largely due whatever measure of success the plan has thus far attained. The subcommittee, now a committee of the Iron and Steel Division, was recognized and formally made a part of the Institute's organization at the February, 1928, meeting. As originally organized and as const,it,uted during the past year the committee has been made up as follows: C. H. Herty, Jr., C. D. King, A. B. Kinzel, John Johnston, C. E. Meissner, L. F. Reinartz, R. B. Sosman, and A. L. Feild, Chairman. Dr. C. H. Herty, Jr. has just been elected chairman for the coming year and C. E. Meissner has been reelected as secretary. From the outset it has been the settled policy of the committee to make membership an annual rather than a permanent matter and to reconstitute in part the membership of the committee each year by dropping a certain number of members and adding new members. I. Summary of General Features. Location.—The Clealum iron-ore deposits occur on Clealum river, a tributary of the Yakima river; in the eastern spurs of the Cascade range, Washington.† Mount Stuart, 9470 feet in altitude, is a dominant peak of the district, which will therefore be referred to as the Mount Stuart district. By way of the valley and cañon of the Clealum, the ores are 18 miles from Roslyn, the colliery-town, which is reached by a short branch from the Northern Pacific Railroad. Where they occur the valley has an elevation of 2900 to 8000 feet above sea; that of the end of the branch railroad at Ronald is 2345 feet. The grade of the valley from near Ronald to the junction of the Clealum and Salmon Lasac rivers, 144 miles, is 20 feet per mile; thence to the iron-ores it is 130 feet per mile, through a cañon 241/2 miles long. WHEN measuring ordinary temperatures, the instrument is generally placed in very close contact with the body the temperature of which is desired. However, if the temperature of the source is continually raised, a point is soon reached where no known substance will, in general, remain constant in any of its temperature-measuring properties if placed in direct contact with the source. Also, it is occasionally necessary to measure the temperature of a source that 'is so small or so situated that it would be very hard to bring the measuring instrument into direct contact with the source. When these conditions exist, advantage is taken of the well-known fact that all bodies, when at sufficiently high temperatures, send out radiation in amounts readily measurable. This radiation has been found to be related to the temperature. The temperatures of very hot bodies have probably always been judged by the color, or the brightness, of the light given off. With practice, one can estimate probably within 50° to 100° C. of the correct value. However, if judgment is left to the eye alone, very much larger errors are sometimes made, due to

The effect of alumina particles on the nucleation and growth of cracks through a silver- chloride matrzx has been investigated. It has been found possible to promote fibrous cracking in dispersion-strengthened silver, chloride under notch-impact conditions at temperatures at which silver chloride alone cleaves brittlely The modification) of fracture beIzavzor is thought to be due to the relaxation of hydrostatrc stress beneath a notch by the nucleation of cavities near alumina particles. In recent years, composite or dispersion-strengthened materials have been studied primarily to understand their high resistance to plastic flow particularly at elevated temperatures. Dislocation models have been developed with which it is possible to deduce with fair success the effects of interparticle distance, particle size, temperature, upon yielding and creep behavior.l-4 Much less attention has been paid to the fracture behavior of these materials (with the notable exception of common structural steels) and little is known experimentally about the manner in which inclusions affect the nucleation and growth of cracks through a matrix. Nevertheless a beginning has been made in connection with fibrous cracking in ductile matrices where inclusions appear to play an essential ro1e.5-7 During the severe localized plastic deformation which accompanies necking in a tensile test, cavities are believed to develop at inclusions; these cavities subsequently grow and coalesce by plastic flow until separation is complete. It is of interest to consider whether inclusions can affect fracture behavior under loading conditions which restrict the plasticity of the matrix itself (for example, cleavage under conditions of a high imposed strain rate at low temperatures). It is particularly interesting to study these effects in a solid which shows a spectrum of behavior ranging from fully ductile to semi-brittle behavior. Such a solid is silver chloride whose mechanical behavior depends sensitively upon temperature and strain rate.'," The present paper is concerned with a study of the influence of inclusions (in the form of alumina particles) on the fracture behavior of silver chloride loaded uniaxially at low strain rates at room temper- ature and also under notch impact conditions over a wide range of temperature. In particular, it will be shown that the alumina particles can exert a startling effect on the ductile-brittle transition temperature of notched silver chloride and that the magnitude and nature of the effect depends upon both the quantity of alumina and the shape of the alumina particles. 1. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1.1 Materials Used. Silver chloride powder of analytical reagent (AR) quality having an average particle size 6 was supplied by the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works (st. Louis, MO.). Acid washed 900 mesh alumina powder, designated A38-900, was supplied by the Norton Co. (Cambridge, Mass.). This powder was added to silver chloride in two forms: a) the as-received condition in which the individual particles were of random irregular shape; their statistical average size was 7; b) in a condition in which each particle was spherically shaped by a fusion technique. In this case, the statistical average particle size determined with the optical microscope was approximately the same (about 5p) but electron micrographic evidence indicated that many ultra fine particles were present in the spheroidized powder. 1.2 Preparation of Composite Materials. Silver chloride-alumina composites containing 2.5, 5, and 15 pct by volume of alumina were produced by the extrusion of mechanically mixed powders blended in a ball mill for 24 hr at room temperature. The mixtures were compacted at 50,000 psi at room temperature in the form of billets 3/4 in. in diameter and 1 in. long which were then extruded with a 16:l reduction ratio at 370°C through a radius-type steel die having a 5 deg lead-in angle. An extrusion temperature of 370°C was selected to ensure that all composites had sufficient plasticity to be extruded. Apart from this general requirement, the choice was arbitrary. 1.3 Microstructure of Composites. Attempts were made to check the distribution of alumina metallo-graphically by polishing transverse and longitudinal sections of the extruded rod. Specimens were wet-ground to 600 emery paper and lapped successively with 5 and 0.25-p grades of diamond paste. They were etched for 10 sec in 10 pct sodium thiosulfate solution and lightly polished in concentrated ammonium hydroxide. The most effective way to render the alumina particles and grain boundaries visible was to radiate the surface with intense white light to decorate the grain boundaries and the particle-matrix interfaces photolytically.

s-plutonium samples possessing a strong growth texture have been produced by allowing them to transform under pressure from p to a. A fiber texture with [010] parallel to the pressure axis results. The textured samples are expected to be useful in determining the effects of crystallographic orientation on the physical properties of a plutonium, and initial results of measurements of resistivity and mechanical properties are described. THE crystal structure of a plutonium1 is mono-clinic, P21/m, and many of the metal's properties should reflect the crystallographic anisotropy. Unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to grow useful sizes of single crystals of a plutonium. Therefore, few of plutonium's orientation-sensitive properties have been determined as a function of crystallographic orientation. One way to gain information about at least some of the orientation-dependent properties is to study a highly textured sample. Such samples have been produced by cold rolling a plutonium,2 but they are necessarily very small in one dimension. We have now successfully used two other techniques to produce highly textured samples, not limited to small thicknesses. METHODS OF PRODUCING PREFERRED ORIENTATION The texture is produced by causing the plutonium to transform from ß to a while under pressure. It was observed by Gardner3 that applying a compres-sive load during the transformation resulted in the formation of columnar grains of a plutonium, and Cramer4 observed a similar structure in some diffusion couples rolled in the P phase. Neither of these workers, however, investigated the subject beyond these observations. The more flexible of the two methods developed is that of compressive loading. The technique is to enclose a sample of plutonium in a die assembly before applying the load. It is possible, of course, to dispense with the die and simply press the sample between two platens. In this case, however, the unrestrained sample deforms during the pressing, making it difficult to maintain the load and to control the final sample thickness. This compressive loading technique has been used on specimens ranging from 1/4 to 3 in. diameter, with height-to-diameter ratios ranging from 5 : l to 1:6. The procedure begins with loading the sample, a right cylinder of a plutonium, into the pressing die. Plastic deformation of the sample while it is being pressed is minimized by machining the sample so that its diameter is nearly the same as that of the die barrel. Then the loaded die assembly is placed in a vacuum pressing can that fits on a hydraulic press. After a vacuum is achieved the die assembly is heated to 180°C and equilibrated. The load is then applied and the specimen and die are allowed to cool to about 40° to 50°C before the pressure is removed. The resulting sample is composed of rod-shaped a -plutonium grains, the rod axes being parallel to the cylinder axis and the pressing direction. Photomicrographs of the oriented structure are shown in Fig. 1. Although most of the specimen is composed of grains whose rod axes are parallel to the cylinder axis, a thin, peripheral layer consists of rod-shaped grains whose rod axes are perpendicular to the cylinder axis. Presumably, the highly plastic nature of p plutonium leads to approximately hydrostatic conditions during the initial stages of the P — a transformation under pressure. At this time, the grains in the peripheral layer would have grown parallel to the local force direction. During the latter stages of the transformation, the accompanying volume contraction would have eliminated the radial forces, leaving only the axial force and resulting in the growth of the observed structure. INSTRUMENTATION in the process industries can no longer be regarded as a convenience, but rather an absolute necessity. Although many chemical processes must already be conducted with instruments, every properly designed application of automatic process control will improve operation: 1) the product will be more uniform and of higher quality; 2) the manual labor saved will reduce cost; 3) uniformity of flow and uniform control of process will increase production; and 4) surges will be eliminated, making it possible to operate equipment near ultimate capacity at all times. Industrial instruments fall into two general classifications—those that measure and those that measure and control. The cement industry has been using instruments for a number of years, particularly in the burning process, primarily for indicatlng and recording. Automatic process control makes additional use of these instruments, and others, to control variables. Assisted by the instrument manufacturers, engineers at Ideal Cement Co. achieved considerable progress in determining how well the usual recording instruments could be made to control various phases of cement-making. The results of these experiments were used to make the new plant at Houston as wholly automatic as possible. The original Houston plant, built in 1937 by Gulf Portland Cement Co., consisted of only one 8 x 220-ft kiln and the necessary grinding mills and accessory equipment and had a capacity of 900 bbl per day (300,000 bbl annually). Ideal Cement Co. purchased this plant in 1940 and almost immediately started plans to increase its production. In 1941 a 9 x 220-ft kiln was installed and grinding and storage capacity were increased. The growing demand for cement in the Houston area necessitated a third kiln (9 ft 6 in. x 250 ft) in 1947. This brought the plant up to its present capacity of about 1.3 million bbl per year. Calcium silicates in cement are produced in a burning operation at high temperatures from raw mix of argillaceous and calcareous materials that have been crushed, mixed, and ground to a fine powder. The composition of this mixture must be kept consistent within narrow limits. Raw mixing and grinding may be done either wet or dry, but in both instances the materials must be correctly proportioned, finely ground, and thoroughly intermixed before entering the kiln. Delayed failure in steel occurs by controlled initiation and growth of a crack. The incubation period for crack initiation was measured. Crack initiation and Propagation are controlled by interaction between hydrogen concentration and triaxial stress state. The incubation period results from stress-induced diffusion of hydrogen to the point of crack initiation. THIS paper describes the phenomenon of delayed failureland the kinetics of crack initiation and propagation in uniformly hydrogenated steel. The investigation was prompted by service failures of high-strength-steel components at applied stresses far below the conventional yield strength, after the part had successfully sustained equal or higher stresses for an extended time interval. This delayed failure phenomenon, often termed static fatigue, is associated1 with the presence of hydrogen. This is not surprising, since the voluminous literature on flaking and hydrogen embrit-tlement demonstrates that hydrogen may exert a potent embrittling influence. Flakes, or internal hairline cracks in alloy-steel forgings, are related to the presence of hydrogen retained from the steel-making process.2 On the other hand, embrit-tlement arises from hydrogen introduced during surface treatments such as acid pickling or electroplating. Laboratory delayed failures have been induced in notch specimens of 4340 steel by electrolytic charging of the specimen surface with hydrogen and subsequent static stressing.l,4,5 Static fatigue was observed over a wide range of applied stresses; however, failure did not occur below a critical applied stress, designated as the static fatigue limit. In this instance the extended time for failure resulted primarily from the macroscopic redistribution of hydrogen. A crack formed to the depth of the hydrogen enriched "case* upon loading; further crack growth naturally awaited diffusion of hydrogen into the material ahead of the crack. The crack-propagation rate was therefore controlled primarily by the macroscopic diffusion of hydrogen into the specimen interior during the test. Thus, in this instance static fatigue was associated with the movement of a gross concentration gradient. However, delayed failure in steel of uniform hydrogen concentration is of greater fundamental interest, as well as commercial significance. With a homogeneous hydrogen distribution a different mode of delayed failure might be expected. As the heterogeneous hydrogen distribution became more uniform,4,5 the initial crack-propagation rate decreased markedly and, in fact, what appeared to be an incubation period for crack initiation was observed. However, the macroscopic concentration gradient precluded an accurate evaluation of these observations. Although the existence of an incubation period, up to this time, has not been established definitely, it is not amiss to point out some implications of the concept. IT has been shown1 that in the absence of heavy metal salts, the nature of the alkali used to promote differential flotation-whether caustic soda, lime or sodium carbonate-is unimportant. The hydroxyl ion is the active depressant upon which differentiation depends, and the pH value determines whether a film of collector forms on any given mineral surface. Even when sodium cyanide is used in conjunction with alkalies, it is the pH value and not the nature of the alkali or its concentration that is important, for upon the pH value alone depends the fraction of the added sodium cyanide that is present as cyanide ion, which is the true depressant. When heavy metal salts become dissolved from partly oxidized ores, or are added intentionally as activators, conditions are different, and metallurgists have found that lime and sodium carbonate do not give identical results, even when added in amounts sufficient to produce the same pH value. In the few instances in which we had attempted to confirm this view, we had failed to do so, for, with nothing to guide us, we had inadvertently chosen solutions that gave contact curves of a "stand-ard type," which correspond to conditions of ready floatability. Now, however, we find that, in the presence of copper salts, and within a restricted range of reagent concentrations, the nature of the anions present is important, and that sodium carbonate does influence the results, apart from the usual effect due to its influence on pH value. With the recognition of this anion effect, and with the control of temperature already introduced,' it appears that the factors of major importance in connection with this set of reagents have been taken into consideration, and that the results obtained and the conclusions drawn from contact tests will be of more immediate value to the operator.

There was an extensive mining and industrial exploitation of Russia, about 20 years ago, by Belgian, French and British capitalists; but the results were discouraging. It is said that the Belgian and French public together lost approximately $400,000,000, chiefly in the coal and iron industry of southern Russia. This loss is largely accounted for by the fact that most of the companies were formed, as usual in " boom" times, to sell stock; and that thorough investigations were not made. I11 1906, renewed interest was taken in Russian mines, especially in those of gold and copper, and a considerable literature is growing on this subject; but as yet I have seen no account of one of the large Russian mining estates. The following notes on such property, where the conditions are so different from those in the mining regions of the United States, should be of interest: This inadequate and probably somewhat inaccurate account is made up, partly from my own notes made on the ground, in the summers of 1904 and 1905, and partly from a volume on the geology and resources of the estate issued several years ago, containing surface- and mine-maps, and from a pamphlet published in 1904, giving a general account of the condition and prospects of the property. This pamphlet includes a report made in 1899 by Arthur L. Pearse, a member of this Institute. Both these books are in Russian, and were prepared by the Bogoslovsk Mining Co., which owns and operates the property. Articles in many other languages have appeared dealing with various matters connected with the estate; but I know of no other general account of it. THE Utah coal field to which the name Book Cliffs is applied runs in a northeast direction from Mt. Hilgarde, in Sevier county, along the escarpment of the Wasatch Plateau to the vicinity of Castle Gate, thence southeast along the Book cliffs, which lie to the north of and generally within sight of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad,. to the Colorado line. The Book cliffs form the southern escarpment of the West and East Travaputs Plateaus, and vary in height from 2,000 to 6,000 ft. At the base of the Wasatch and Book Cliffs escarpments is a broad plain known as Castle valley. The coal beds outcropping in the escarpments along this valley are worked on the largest scale of any in the State, and this particular area is known locally as the Castle Valley coal field. Geology The Book cliffs are capped by the Tertiary-Eocene-formation, consisting of varicolored shales; buff sandstone, conglomerate, and subordinate thin beds of limestone. Different sections show diverse stratigraphy. This is mainly the Wasatch formation, and lies unconformably upon the rocks of the Upper Cretaceous. Fig. 1 is a generalized section of the rocks of the. Book Cliffs field. The Mesaverde formation contains the cliff-making rocks of the Book cliffs, and is composed of massive sandstone interbedded with sandy shales and beds of coal and carbonaceous shale. The sandstone has greater resistance to erosion and the formation is characterized by escarpment ledges and cliffs. The shale is commonly sandy and is drab in color, but where it is associated with the coal it is usually carbonaceous. The following summary is written for the benefit of the practical operator in the nonmetallic field who wishes to know what geophysics has done and may be expected to do in his line of work. His problem is quite different from that of the geophysicist who has operated with various or all methods and has followed the literature, and who is assumed to be familiar with the geologic possibilities and limitations of each method. This article is not written for the latter, although he may be interested in the four or five hitherto unpublished surveys described. To the operator, on the other hand, geophysics is only secondary. His problem is to determine which geophysical method is best suited to his special needs. If he wanted to know, however, which method could be used to locate a certain material of given physical properties, building stone, for instance, he would have to wade through a tremendous amount of geophysical literature, bibliographies and articles, before he could find what he wanted. Therefore, the purpose of this summary is to present the geological problems first and then to discuss the comparative merits of the geophysical methods that can be, or have been, applied. Choice of Geophysical Methods in Oil, Civil and Mining Engineering In the first two of these fields, the geological problems are not nearly so complex as in the metal and nonmetallic mining fields. The selection of the correct geophysical method in these fields is not nearly so difficult for the operator. For oil prospecting, his problems have been discussed exhaustively by E. DeGolyer.(1) † In civil engineering (foundation and ground-water work), the usefulness of electrical methods has been so well established that there is hardly any choice of other methods at present. The situation may be changed in the future with the perfection of the seismic reflection method for shallow depths. INTRODUCTION Referring to a ground support system as a 'band-aid' borders on getting cute, but the application of cable slings in U.S. mining is somewhat analogous. Where problems in the roof or rib require additional support, the versatile cable sling is the answer in a variety of conditions. To fully understand how and why cable slings are used today we must briefly review their development history. Much of the thrust over the last five to seven years in ground support fixtures has been the development of hybrid systems. Taking the best of two or more existing roof bolt fixtures and marrying them into a new fixture which exhibits the good characteristics without the bad of the parent systems. Resin point anchored mechanical bolts, continuous threaded rebar bolts, and others have all be- come important fixtures in rock mass stabilization. HYBRID GROUND SUPPORT SYSTEM The cable sling system is also a hybrid, both in its parentage and in its ground support characteristics. See figure 1. Chromite is the only ore mineral of metallic chromium and chromium compounds and chemicals. Because of this fact, chromite and chrome ore are used synonymously in trade literature. In commercial market quotations, chrome ore is the term commonly used. Chromite per se, because of properties imparted by its chromium content, is used in refractories and in special purpose moulding sands for metal casting. There are many other minerals containing some, generally minor, amounts of chromium, but none are commercial sources of the element (Thayer, 1956, p. 15). Chromium and chromite have many diverse uses that, directly and indirectly, critically affect vast segments of our modern industrial system. Most important are probably the metallurgical applications wherein chromium is a component of heat, abrasion, corrosion, and oxidation-resistant, and high strength alloys of many types. Stainless steels are the largest volume category of chrome-bearing alloys. Chromium chemicals are used in leather tanning, in pigments, dyes and mordants, printing, :hemica1 process industries, photography, pharmaceuticals, metal plating, pure chromium metal production, and for many other purposes. Chromite is a necessary constituent in basic refractories indispensable for the production of steel, copper, cement, and glass. Under present economic-political conditions, he U.S. and for that matter, North America, has virtually insignificant ore reserves of chromite. There are chromite deposits, as will be described, but they would only be used under highly abnormal conditions if all outside sources were cut off. All chromite used in the U.S. is imported from the eastern hemisphere in which are contained the principal world reserves. As the main suppliers in 1971-72 were the USSR, Turkey, Republic of South Africa, Philippines, and Rhodesia, the strategic nature of chromite is obvious.
