DO the curricula of our mineral technology schools prepare their graduates to meet properly the full range of their responsibilities in after life? An unequivocal "no" could be returned to this question, because training and experience in professional work are quite as important as adequate college preparation. Furthermore, a had curriculum with a splendid corps of men doing the teaching and a competent body of students doing the learning will produce a better result than an ideal curriculum in the hands of unqualified teachers and poorly prepared students.

ALTHOUGH Greater New York does not bear any resemblance to a great mining district, the mining operations that are being conducted in and about the city are both extensive and interesting in character. With regard to the extent, it may be mentioned that, at. present, there is more dynamite used in New York than in any mining district in the United States; that there are under construction about 38 miles of tunnel, and that 66 miles more are projected, most of which must be constructed in the near future ; that since 1902 at least 2,000,000 tons of earth has been removed in underground work, in addition to about 3,500,000 tons that has been removed in, open-cut in connection with tunnel-work, and many times this quantity that has been removed in excavating foundations for buildings not connected with tunnel-work; and that there are to-day probably more than 5,000 men engaged in mining-work in and about New York City. These undertakings include almost every operation connected with underground work, from exploration by means of trench and boring, to the sinking of large shafts and the driving of large tunnels through every kind of ground from hard rock to soft, semi-fluid silt and quicksand. It is proposed in this paper to give a general description of some of the methods and appliances used in the opening-up ,of a "mine" in a large city, and a brief description of some of the "mines" now being developed in New York, connecting as far as possible the methods described with the particular work for which they were designed, in order to give a general idea of the

In a laboratory study of grinding and classification' of silica sand, a satisfactory means of producing the medium-fine specification sand desired by producers of flint-glass containers was developed. The best procedure consisted of ball-mill grinding and double classification, which gave a properly sized sand containing less iron than the feed.

Plans for a multi-million dollar uranium mill in southeastern Utah were confirmed by Vanadium Corp. of America officials. Atomic Energy Commission has been dickering with two private firma for mill construction at Hite, Utah and Shiprock, N. Mex. Colorado Fuel & Iron has contracted to purchase all manufacturing business, plants and inventories of John A. Roebling's Sons Co., through a wholly owned subsidiary. CF&I currently the nation's ninth largest steel producer, will operate the new subsidiary under the Roebling name.

THE principal purposes of library-catalogs are to enable a reader to find a book of which the author, the title, or the subject is known; to show what the library has. by a given author, or on a given subject; and to assist in the choice of a book, as to its edition, or as to its character. The author, in a narrow sense, is the person who writes a book; in a wider sense it is applied to him who is the cause of the book's existence, e.g., editor, translator, compiler, etc. Bodies of men, societies, and countries are, from a cataloging point of view, con¬sidered the authors of their official publications, memoirs, transactions, etc. All names selected as author names are arranged in strict alphabetical order. A subject catalog fulfills its purpose by entering or registering each book under the name of that subject or topic of which the book chiefly treats. It may or may not be alphabetical in arrangement. If the arrangement is not alphabetical, the catalog is commonly called a classed subject catalog, although this name might with equal propriety be applied to some alphabetical arrangements.

AS good health is the most important asset in life, the development of healthful conditions should be the one common meeting ground of agreement between management and labor. Health should not be a subject to be pulled apart, shoved around, or bargained about. Differences of opinion may exist in the procedure and techniques employed in approaching the goal of maintaining the health of workmen, and in the method of increasing the ultimate profit of the employer by improved working and living conditions. Such matters are doubtless appropriate subjects for discussions between the interested parties, but techniques are only tools. If an employer fails to remedy a hazard or a menace which contributes to poor working condlions, this constitutes a legitimate grievance. It should not be necessary, however, nor is it desirable that fundamentals of health maintenance become matters of collective bargaining, any more than should the principles of management and engineering. I have been especially concerned during the last few months with the propaganda in collective bargaining negotiations throughout the country for including in union contracts a given number of days of sick leave with pay. TWO zinc concentrating mills are operated by the St. Joseph Lead Co. in St. Lawrence County, N. Y. The Edwards mill is operating at present only sixteen hours a day treating 400 tons daily. The metallurgy at Edwards presents no unusual problems therefore this discussion is mainly limited to the metallurgy of the Balmat ore. The Balmat mill has a capacity of 1,250 tons per day and the operating crew consists of three shift bosses each with five millmen per shift. Two crusher operators work on each of two shifts and one cleanup man on day shift. The repair crew is made up of a foreman and three repairmen, one of the repairmen being capable of taking over any operating job in the mill from shift boss down. Each millman is capable of handling the next job in line and several men in the yard crew are broken into handling the start-off job in the mill so that temporary shortages of men do not cause extensive overtime. DAME Nature was in a generous mood when she distributed widely over the face of the globe numerous deposits of phosphate rock from which man can make phosphatic festiIizer to replace the phosphate re- moved from the soil by crops. The principal deposits are readily accessible to the world's greatest consuming areas and most of them are such that mining operations can be carried on at relatively low cost. The world's known reserves shown in Table 1 are sufficient to last well over 2000 gears at the present rate of consumption. Before giving a brief outline of the phosphate rock industry of foreign countries let us try to get a picture of the movement of phosphate rock throughout the world in 1938, the last full normal calendar year where it came from and where it was consumed. Table 2 shows the origin and finial destination of world shipments in 1938 by grand divisions. Table 3 (p. 499) shows shipment9 of phosphte rock to each country in Europe. Europe is seen to be by far the world's greatest market and the French North African mines the world's most important producers outside of the U. S. A.

We have received from L. S. Cates, the following translation, by S. W. Mudd, of early mining methods in India: In Herodotus one finds a description how Darius by aid of his good horse and his good groom Oebares got himself the Kingdom of the Per-sians. He then set up in Persia twenty satrapies assigning to each a governor and fixing the tribute which was to be paid to him by the several nations. The following description of the method of getting the gold demanded of the Indians as tribute is copied directly from Book III Thalia, paragraphs 94 to 105 omitting the diversions of Herodotus which in one case consisted of a lapse of two pages following a semicolon before the author returned to the subject. The Indians, who are more numerous than any other nation with which we are acquainted paid a tribute exceeding that off every other people, to wit, three hundred and sixty talents of gold-dust. The way in which the Indians get the plentiful supply of gold, which enables then to furnish year by year so vast an amount of gold-dust to the King, is the following: Eastward of India lies a tract which is entirely sand. Here, in this desert, there live amid the sand great ants, in size somewhat less than clogs, but bigger than foxes. The Persian king has a number of them, which have been caught by the hunters in the land whereof we are speaking. These ants make their dwellings under ground, and like the Greek ants, which they very much resemble in shape, throw up sand-heaps as they burrow. Now the sand which they throw up is full of gold. The Indians, when they go into the desert to collect this sand, take three camels and harness them together, a female in the middle and a male on either side, in a leading-rein. The rider sits on the female, and they are particular to choose for the purpose one that has just dropped . her young; for their female camels can run as fast as horses, while they bear burdens very much better.

IN other countries, research involving testing in various phases of ground movement and lessening its damaging effects, as by roof control, is going on more intensively than in this country, as evidenced by official mining papers and general articles appearing- in .Great Britain, Germany, France, and South Africa. One most important bulletin, "Some Aspects of Deep Level Mining on the Witwatersrand Gold Mines with Special Reference to Rock Bursts,"' was published by the Association of Mine Managers of the Transvaal, Johannesburg, under date of June, 1933, though not received in this country until 1.934. Since the deepest mining in the world is being done on the Rand-several mines over 7000 ft. deep and the Robinson mine 8000 ft.-the studies made are of intense interest to all mining men who have to deal with heavy ground pressure. In the discussion following the papers differences of opinions are shown on a number of problems; for example, on the ade¬quacy of sand-filling to prevent rock bursts and whether compressible or rigid artificial supports are best; also whether pressure bursts are due to the doming of strata and collapse of a lag of the dome or to induced shear cracks in the hanging wall. The problem of obtaining some means of warning of an impending rock burst led to testing with height indicators to find whether warning might be obtained by the lessening of distance between hanging wall and footwall. The indicators used are similar in idea but not in detail to the "convergence recorders" developed by the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain for their roof-control studies in coal mines. Success at several Rand mines is claimed in that indicator records give some degree of warning when the lessening of height is rapid, although, on the other hand, when this happens bursts do not always occur.

For the second consecutive year, the production of crude petroleum in New York has fallen below the 5,000,000-bbl. Mark that had prevailed previously since 1937. In 1945, the output totaled 4,658,000 bbl., a decrease of slightly more, than one per cent from the 1944 production. This total represents 2 per cent of the stripper-well production of the United States, which in turn is I 3 per cent of the total annual yield of the nation's petroleum.

THE object of refining copper in the reverberatory furnace is to obtain a metal which will have the highest attainable degree of malleability, ductility and electric conductivity, and present at the same time a level surface when it solidifies in the mold after casting. These desirable physical properties are governed by the character of the impurities and the forms in which they are present, by the amount of cuprous oxide retained by the copper, by the quantity of gas held in solid solution, by the casting-temperature, and by the thickness of the casting. The effects of impurities, of cuprous oxide and of gases upon the mechanical properties of copper have been studied by Hampe in his classical paper "Contributions to the Metallurgy of Copper." The most recent research into the effect of metals upon the electrical conductivity of copper is that of Addicks.2 The influence of cuprous oxide upon the electrical conductivity has been investigated by Walker' and Addicks.4 The absorption of gases has received' attention by Hampe,5 Stahl 6 and Heyn.7 The effects of casting-temperature have been noted by Stahl.8

(San Francisco meeting, October, 1911.) THE nature of slimes handled in the treatment of gold- and silver-ores has been discussed in technical literature to a considerable extent. The subject of slime-filtration from the practical worker's stand-point has also received much comment, and scattered through the literature of the subject are descriptions of many slime-filtration installations. Articles of this nature serve a valuable purpose and assist materially in the design of new and the improvement of old plants. The subject of the physics of slime-filtration has been touched upon to only a slight extent. The underlying principles are worthy of more intensive study and experimentation than they have received, and the main purpose of this paper is to present the results of such study and experimental work as will serve to make clear in part at least many of the principles which control the filtration of slime. Nature of Slime. Much has bean written concerning an accurate definition of the term ? slime," but no comprehensive definition seems to be generally accepted. The reason for this is clear. A slime consists of at least three different substances, each, when separated, possessing distinctly different physical and to a certain extent chemical properties. These substances are extremely fine sand, a colloidal material which may be and generally is in a coagulated condition, and a colloidal material which is in a non-coagulated condition. Suspending a slime in a relatively large volume of water by shaking and allowing sedimentation to take place, results in the fine sand settling out with comparative rapidity, followed by the coagulated material, which settles much more slowly and finally a certain portion remains

Pilot plant test work in 1942 and 1943 showed that by a combination of desliming, fine-size classification, and Sullivan deck concentration it is possible to recover heavy minerals such as cassiterite at least as fine as 10 microns in size. This appreciable improvement in gravity concentration practice has been substantiated by several full-sized plants.

ANNUAL meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary of the American Institute of Mining and Metal-lurgical Engineers convened on Tuesday morn-ing, Feb. 20, the president, Mrs. H. W. Hardinge, presiding. President Hardinge, in opening the meet-ing, said: "I have the honor and great pleasure to welcome you to our seventh annual meeting. It has been a happy year, though I started in fear and trembling. My fear is partly gone and my trembling becomes less as time goes on. Never has a chairman had such splendid cooperation and harmony in her work; no. matter how much was asked nor what the task, I have always received the same answer, `We are with you, of course we can do it.' Often the road has been untried and the way full of snares, but we have all pulled together. Is it any wonder we have had a prosperous year? I cannot thank the governing -board and officers enough for their help." Mrs. Hardinge described her trip through the West last summer, during which she visited many of the local sections of the Auxiliary. She also spoke of the work of the Rossiter Raymond memorial library which has been started as an activity of the Woman's Auxiliary. Mrs. Reynders read the minutes of the last annual meeting, and Mrs. Kemp read the treasurer's report. The latter showed that on Feb. 1, 1922, there was a bank balance of $683.61 and on Feb. 10, 1923, the bal-ance was $947.93. Mrs. Westervelt expressed the sorrow of the Auxiliary for the death -of Mrs. Florence Howe Hall and of Mrs. Levi P. Holbrook.

SOMETIMES family backgrounds have a deep, if not direct, influence on a man's lifework. Dean Callen's paternal grandfather came from Wales and was a mine official in the Pennsylvania anthracite field: his maternal grandfather was a retail coal dealer. His father and uncle began their careers a. breaker boys but later completed their educational work and ended up in the professions. With that background, and with the slate region ( Pen Argyl, Pa.. July 1;. 1888) as his birthplace it is not strange that "Cope" Callen became a teacher of mining engineering. Graduating from Lehigh with an E.M. in 1909, lie taught there for two years while working for his master's degree. In 1911 he returned to teaching, going to the University of Illinois as instructor in mining engineering. In 1917, he was called to West Virginia University as head of the department of mining engineering and director of mining extension. The extension work was about dead. bus a new staff was built and the six-weeks' short course in coal mining was revamped into an attractive and efficient course which has grown in popularity with the years. Callen's work attracted the attention of the Federal Board for Vocational Education and in 1919 he was invited to serve that board as special agent for mining, taking a six-months' leave front the University.

The high temperature mechanical properties of stainless steels after fast neutron irradiation are discussed in the light of effects caused by lattice dattmage and effects caused by helium generated from n,a transmutations. Embrittlement at high temperatures is due to helium accumulation at grain boundaries and to cavity formation and proPagation along grain boundaries. Following from the embrittlement mechanism, it is suggested that when deformation occurs by mechanisms associated with super plasticity, helium ac-curnulation at boundaries should be attenuated and cavities, if formed, should be nonpropagating. As the mean free Path between interphase boundaries of a two-phase Fe-Cr-Ni alloy was decreased, the degree of superplastic deforrnation at 870°C increased, as vneaszired by total elongation and by the expottent m = a log 'a/a log 'i. This alloy and type 304 stainless steel were cyclotron irradiated in an a-particle beam to a helium concentration of -1 x 10 atom He per atom. The stainless steel specimen was embrittled, but the ductility of irradiated two-phase Fe-Cr-Ni alloys correlated with the values of. m during 'defor-malion. The .finest grained, helium-injected specimens that deforrned with highest m values exhibited the largest elongations to ,fracture. These results could be correlated with metallographic observations of cavity behavior: the propensity for intergranular propagation was lessened as the m value increased. It is concluded that superplastic deformation is ef-fectizle in attenuating helium embrittlement at elevated temperatures. One of the principal problems associated with development of fast breeder reactors is application of alloys such that suitable fuel cladding results. Stainless steels and other Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, because of highly acceptable nuclear characteristics, represent the primary materials for this component, and an exhaustive research and development effort is being conducted. The main deficiency of these materials has been a severe loss of ductility at high temperatures after fast neutron irradiation. An extensive body of mechanical property data and microstructural observations has provided an adequate phenomenological description of embrittlement; in conjunction with transmission electron microscopy studies, a reasonably acceptable embrittlement mechanism has been obtained. Following from this mechanism, it is suggested in the present work that ductility would be enhanced if deformation could occur by mechanisms associated with the phenomenon of superplasticity. Experiments to test this hypothesis have been conducted, and the results are presented and discussed in this paper. IRRADIATION EMBRITTLEMENT AT HIGH TEMPERATURE Austenitic stainless steels have been irradiated to accumulated fast neutron fluences of 1020 to 1022 nvt at temperatures between 60" and 600°C. Specimens that have been exposed to these conditions and subsequently tensile tested at temperatures between 600" and about 900°C exhibit approximately 5 pct total elongation to fracture.'-3 For unirradiated specimens receiving a nearly identical thermal exposure, total elongation at these test temperatures is about 45 pct. Examination of irradiated specimens has shown that fracture propagation is entirely intergranular. These phenomenological aspects of irradiation embrittle-ment at elevated temperatures are well known and are not generally disputed. Although the explanation of this phenomenon has been controversial, a mechanism for ernbrittlement has emerged that accounts reasonably well for the observed mechanical behavior. The controversy resulted primarily from an indeterminate role of neutron-in-duced lattice damage, if any, and a presumed, but experimentally unverified, contribution to embrittle-ment from helium generated by n,a transmutations. Recently, Holmes and coworkers4 have conducted experiments that separate these effects, and the results are instructive in formulation of the ernbrittlement mechanism. Holmes el al.4 irradiated type 304 stainless steel in EBR-I1 to a fluence of 1.4 x 1022 nvt (E > 0.18 mev); the irradiation temperature was 538" * 48°C or, in terms of absolute melting point, 0.49 * 0.03 T,. After irradiation, tensile tests were conducted at temperatures of 21" to 870.C, the specimens first being annealed for 30 min at each test temperature. In addition, thin sections of irradiated specimens were annealed for 1 hr at identical temperatures, electro and examined by transmission electron microscopy. Thus, for a given temperature, it was possible to correlate mechanical properties with the defect structure. At room temperature, the yield stress of irradiated specimens was a factor of 2.5 higher than unirradi-ated specimens exposed to an equivalent thermal history. Electron microscopic examination of the irradiated specimen revealed a high density of lattice damage in the form of Frank sessile dislocation loops and polyhedral voids. Holmes et al.4 concluded that the presence of this defect substructure caused the increase in yield stress and that after irradiation in a fast neutron flux at 0.49 Tm, substantial lattice dam-age persists. A technique is described by which metastable alloy phases can be obtained by very rapid cooling from the liquid state. The results obtained so far have lead to; 1) extension of solubility limits beyond their equilibrium values, 2) new phases not found under equilibrium conditions, and 3) amorphous alloys. MANY new nonequilibrium phases have been found in alloys rapidly cooled from the liquid state. The technique used in these investigations essentially consisted of propelling a small molten globule of an alloy against the inside surface of a rotating copper cylinder. Since these original experiments were performed, the technique has been greatly improved. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail, for the first time, a simple and efficient apparatus for producing foils of alloys which are rapidly cooled from the melt and to summarize some of the observations made on these alloys. I) FAST COOLING APPARATUS In the original fast cooling apparatus used by Duwez, Willens, and Klement,' the alloy was melted in a graphite container having the shape shown schematically in Fig. 1. A shock tube was attached to one end of the graphite part to supply the pressure for ejecting the molten globule. The globule was received on the inside of a rotating cylinder located about 0.5 in. from the exit of the graphite container. Although Australia is the world's second biggest producer of iron ore, the last few years have not been easy for companies in Western Australia's Pilbara region (see map) where more than 90% of the nation's iron ore is produced. For at least two years, the industry has been plagued by dwindling markets abroad, production-crippling strikes at home, skyrocketing costs (well above the official 13% annual inflation rate), an acute shortage of investment capital, increasingly ferocious competition from foreign iron ore producers-and, as if all this weren't enough, by an over-valued currency that has caused incalculable damage not only to iron ore producers but to the entire mining industry of Australia. (This last problem was mitigated less than two months ago, on November 28, 1976, when the Australian dollar was devalued by a whopping 17 1/2%.)
