AT the Pittsburg meeting of the Institute, in March, 1910, the death of Mr. Metcalf was announced, and Col. H. P. Bope, of Pittsburg, delivered in memory of him a brief but eloquent address, which, though expressing the sorrow of Mr. Metcalf's friends, and, in general terms,. the debt of gratitude which his country and his profession owed to him, was not intended to be a complete survey of his life and work. With Colonel Bope's permission, and with the aid of some of the statements in his address, I substitute for it, in our Transactions, this more detailed, yet still inadequate memorial. As Colonel Bope justly remarked, the men who could do justice to this theme-such men, as Jones, Chalfant, Bennett, Oliver, and Park-passed away before Metcalf, leaving him almost the last of the generation of great steel-makers who made Pittsburg the Sheffield of America, and who discharged a double function, as the rear-guard of the old metallurgical practice and the van-guard of the new. I knew many of them; would that I were better qualified to celebrate their achievements. William Metcalf was born Sept. 3, 1838, at Pittsburg, Pa., where his father, Orlando Metcalf, was an eminent member of the bar. At the age, of sixteen, he entered the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, at Troy, N. Y., from which he was graduated in June, 1858. Returning to his native city, he became an assistant engineer in the Fort Pitt Foundry, of which. he was made Superintendent in 1859. This famous establishment produced the largest castings and heaviest machinery then known in the United States;-and Mr. Metcalf's intense, intelligent and incessant study of his business prepared him as a manufacturer for a patriotic service to his country more valuable than, as a soldier, he could have rendered in the field. The call came in 1862, when the government needed, above all things, a supply of field, naval and siege artillery. The

IN providing 65,000 tons of broken muck per day for shovel operation in a large open pit copper mine, drilling equipment and efficient use of that equipment is of prime importance. To improve existing drilling efficiencies, a large electric rotary drill capable of drilling 12-in. holes was purchased in May 1955. At Chino 96 pct of the blasting is done with 12-in. holes because: 1) the large holes break the optimum amount of material to reduce trackshifting to a minimum, 2) better fragmentation is obtained from a relatively short column of powder, and 3) longer spacing results in greater tonnage broken per foot drilled. From 1955, when it was purchased, through October 1956, the rotary drill has drilled 95,701 ft at a rate of 167.4 per shift in various locations and types of ground encountered in the mine. (This includes moving time and all other delays while a crew is on the machine.) The machine has been worked two shifts per day, seven days per week, and has been available 68 pct of this time.

Sixteen steels containing different combinations of chromium and molybdenum, in amounts up to 5 per cent of each element, were examined for microstructure and hardness after air cooling and after furnace cooling from suitable austenitizing temper- atures. Diagrams summarizing the structnres and hadness resulting from these two cooling rates are presented (Figs. 3, 4, 7).t Data were also obtained on the influence of these two elements, individually and in combination, on the depth of decarburiza-tion observed after furnace cooling (Fig. 8). Composition of Material The chemical composition of the steels investigated is given in Table I. The plain carbon steel was made in a 2 5-ton Heroult electric-are furnace, while the alloy steels were made in a 4.5-ton Ajax-Northrup elec- tric induction furnace. The cast ingots were hot-rolled to 1.75-in. bars. Air-cooled Series The I.75-in. bars were forged to flat plates, 0.25 in. thick, from which specimens 0.5 in. wide by 2 in. long were cut. The specimens were pretreated to improve their homogeneity by heating to 1830°F. (I000°C.) for 20 min. and oil-quenching. They were then reheated to 1740°F. (950°C.) for one hour and air-cooled, after

Uranium metal with a purity of about 99.9 pct was produced on a large scale by fused salt electrolysis with a material efficiency of about 90 pct. The material efficiency depends mainly on bath composition, electrolysis temperature, electrode smothering, and elutriation during washing of the powder. RESEARCH and development work on fused salt electrolysis carried on by the Westinghouse Lamp Div. Bloomfield, N. J., was done under the Manhattan District Corps of Engineers and later under the Atomic Energy Commission for the commercialization of uranium production for the first atomic pile at the University of Chicago in 1942. From the conception of the atomic bomb project it was recognized that metals with impurity levels having little metallurgical significance would be required. Permissible impurity levels were based on neutron absorption. Of particular significance was boron, which could not be present in amounts exceeding 1 ppm. The electrolytic method as developed in 1930 by Driggs and Lilliendahl,1,2 and later improved, yielded uranium of very low boron and other deleterious impurity content. No other method was capable at that time of producing uranium metal of the required purity.' The low boron content of uranium produced by the electrolytic process resulted from the availability of the reactants which were low in boron content, and from the inherent elimination of boron in the fused salt bath. Since the heart of any electrolytic process is the electrolysis cell, this paper will deal with the development of the original bath composition for the efficient production of uranium from a batch process to one of continuous operation. Emphasis also will be placed on other factors which will affect the material efficiency of the process. With the laboratory cell the material efficiency of uranium powder recovery in the early electrolysis was relatively low, about 35 pct based on the ratio of uranium recovered to uranium added. This early process also had other defects. The electro- lytic bath could not be used continuously. After three runs from a freshly charged crucible, the deposit showed a tendency to slip off the electrode as it was raised from the bath. This condition necessitated pouring the charge every fourth run and preparing a new bath. It was assumed at that time that this condition was caused by the increasing fluoride concentration with each addition of uranium salt, which adected the mobility of the uranium ions. Experimental The electrolysis cells differed in size only. They were of the floating cathode type. The laboratory cells were 21/2 in. ID and 6 in. deep and operated at 30 amp and 5 volts. Production was about 150 g metal powder per 8 hr. The plant cells (5 units) were 9 in. ID x 21 in. deep and operated at 1800 amp at 12 volts. The total production unit was designed to produce 250 lb of uranium powder per 8 hr day. Because of the tendency of uranium fines toward spontaneous combustion, material efficiencies were based only on the recovery of useful coarser metal which could be safely handled. The reported efficiencies are of particular significance only as related to the same group of experimental procedures. At the start of the project no changes were contemplated until previous data could be definitely confirmed. Therefore, the first experiments were with the 50 pct CaCl2-50 pct NaCl mixture. The material efficiency of uranium deposition as a function of the number of electrolyses is shown in Table I. In Table I, the decrease in efficiency at 800°C with number of runs is apparent and confirmed the earlier data. Operating at 900°C enabled the number of runs to be doubled, but before pouring the charge the efficiency of recovery became poor. This test indicated that the improved efficiency might have been caused by an increase in the fluidity of the bath.

On the extreme fringe of' the great Appalachian coal-basin is a long narrow detached coal-field, which is, in some respects, one of the most important in the United States. This field, about 90 miles long by 2½ to 16 miles wide, extends from the southwest corner of Somerset county, Pennsylvania, through Allegany and Garrett counties, Maryland, Mineral, Grant and Tucker counties, West Virginia, into Randolph county, West Virginia. In this distance four distinct sub-districts are recognized, the Wellersburg in Pennsylvania, the Cumberland-Georges creek in Maryland, and the Elk Garden and the Upper Potomac in West Virginia. The output of coal from the whole field including steam, domestic, smithing and coking-coal of the best quality, is about 4,500,000 tons annually. It is the nearest to tide-water of all the bituminous coal-fields which supply the great coal-markets of the Northern Atlantic seaboard ;

The effectiveness of rock bolts in resisting shear displacement along preexisting fracture surfaces or slip planes was determined in the laboratory with full-scale bolts and large-scale shear test equipment. The system variables were the type of bolt, orientation of bolt relative to shear surface, and normal pressure on the interface. Results showed that, in general, both conventional bolts and resin- grouted reinforcing bars significantly increase the shear resistance along a fracture or bedding plane when the average normal compressive stress on the plane is in the order of 25 psi and when the bolt is oriented such that it tends to lengthen as the shear progresses. An increase in shear resistance is also noted at the higher normal pressure of 250 psi; however, the increase is small compared to the corresponding shear resistance without a bolt. Conventional bolts oriented such that they lose tension as shear displacement occurs added no shear resistance since the tension drops to zero at very small shear displacements.

A 2000-ton ammonia leaching plant has been operated by the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co., at Lake Linden, Mich., continuously since February, 1917, except from April, 1921, to April, 1922, during the period of depression following the European war. A description of this plant has been published elsewhere.1 The present article describes the operation of the plant since 1917, together with the changes in the process that have been found to be advisable. In spite of the fact that this plant and that of the Kennecott Copper Co. are the only ones operating on a large scale, much experimental work is being done on ammonia leaching, as applied to oxidized ores, and it is to aid these and other investigators that this detailed account is given. For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the original article, the following short abstract is given, as an introduction to a more detailed account of the process and the reasons for present practice.

A colloidal solution of a ferrimagnetic material, such as magnetite, in a liquid that is immiscible with and lighter than water is projected for use in selective separation of particles according to their density spectrum. Magnetic levitation forces can be created as an antigravity field when the fluid is properly placed in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. When the gradient of the magnetic field is directed downwards, the levitation force in the fluid will be in an upward direction to float sinking nonmagnetic bodies by counterbalancing their density mismatch with the magnetic fluid. Several nonmagnetic objects with densities ranging from 2.50 to 11.35-g cm' were made to float or submerge at will in a 0.96-g cm' density fluid placed in vertical magnetic field gradients ranging from 0.1 to 1 kilo-oersted cm-'. The magnetic levitation force in dyne cm' was found to vary linearly as a function of the object-fluid density mismatch with a slope equal to one g, the acceleration due to gravity.

The principle of "bed blending" in the agglomeration of materials is about 56 years old, but de- spite all education via technical papers, operating reports and results from functioning installations, the concepts of blending are still somewhat vague. Confusion exists between "mixing", "blending," and the basic role of each. The terms "blending" and mixing" are often used interchangeably, yet they describe two different processes. As properly understood and applied, a blend is a combination of different varieties of material which produces a desired quality, or the mingling of different elements to form a harmonious whole. In other words, blending is a process of combining granular materials by mechanical means, wherein the final product, or a portion thereof, must contain an exact proportional amount of every one of the several different materials which contributed to the mass and wherein all particles are so thoroughly intermingled with each other as to have lost their individual identities and become a part of the whole so that when a portion of the blend is taken at any time it will be substantially identical, chemically and physically, to any other portion taken throughout.

ARTHUR KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*). -The author has failed to consider the point which in my mind is the most convincing in advocating some sort of a bureau for the collection of well logs. I venture to say that 90 per cent. of the logs as taken today are absolutely worthless to any one but the one who has taken the log. This is largely due to the careless use of nomenclature. The author says on page 289, "He must ascertain which of the many factors might account for the dry hole in question and often only careful examination of well logs will convey this information." I believe that even a most careful examination of the average log reveals nothing. I have at hand a book on petroleum, by a well-known author. This book has a number of logs from fields all over the world, from which I shall illustrate. In a well log from Kansas I find "Soft gray shale" and in one from Humble I find "Hard blue shale." As a matter of fact the shale from Humble is softer than the shale from the Kansas well. The difference is that the drillers in Kansas, being used to limestone and

THE Searles Lake orebody is located in the north- west corner of San Bernardlno County. It is a dry lake bed with an exposed salt surface covering an area of 12 square miles. Recoverable mineral values are contained in the mother liquor below the surface of the lake. Stratification in the lake bed has separated the brine into two bodies which dlffer in composition. Although liquor is processed from both bodies, this paper will discuss only the upper structure brine. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical cross-section of the two commercial orebodies. The orebody is composed of a porous salt deposit 70 to 90 ft deep. The upper structure is separated from the lower orebody by a 12 to 16-ft thick impervious mud seam, as shown in Fig. 1. These salt structures are composed of 55 pct solid-phase salts and 45 pct voids which are filled with the original mother liquor. The brine wells are drilled to the separating mud seam and cased to wlthin 10 ft of the bottom. This is done to draw the brine horizontally from the bottom of the structure. It is pumped with multistage centrifugal pumps Into the plant at the rate of 3 milllon gal per day. The first process that was successful was developed by Charles P. Grimwood for the recovery of potash. The first evaporator unit was built in 1916. In the early twenties, Dr. Morse worked out a process for the recovery of borax. This made the cycle more efficient, as the end liquor could be sent back to the evaporators rather than being sewered. In 1926 the American Potash & Chemical Corp. was formed as a new company, and the entire plant was remodeled. The plant at that time produced only potash, borax, and boric acid. Since then the American Potash & Chemical Corp. has added processes for the production of USP boric acid, refined potash, sulphate of potash, soda ash, salt cake, lithium concentrates, Pyrobor (Na2B4O7) bromine, phosphoric acid, and lithium carbonate. The main plant cycle may be depicted as a closed cycle, see Fig. 2. The raw material, brine, enters the cycle to be mixed with the end liquor, known as ML2, from the pentahydrate borax crystallizers. The mixture of these two forms evaporator feed. Evaporator feed is pumped to the evaporators where it is concentrated, with respect to potash and borax. In the same operation water vapor, sodium chloride, salt trap salt, and clarifier salt are removed from the cycle, see Fig. 3 for potash plant product. The evaporators produce a concentrated liquor which contains approximately 19.5 pct KCI. This liquor is diluted as it enters the potash plant to keep all salts, except potash (KCI, 97.0 pct) in solution. Here the moist potash leaves the cycle at 100°F. The end liquor, known as ML1, is pumped to the borax pentahydrate crystallizers, where crude borax pentahydrate is crystallized and removed as solid phase. The ML2 is sent back to pan feed to be reconcen-trated, see page 207. Note that the only water to leave the cycle is in the form of vapor and moisture in the solid phase products crystallized. Thus there is a constantly cycling volume of liquor to which brine is added. Since the volume of liquor cycled does not increase, the brine is, in effect, evaporated to dryness. This would be true if there were no liquor losses. But, as in all processes, there are always unavoidable and accidental losses which reduce the volume of cycling liquors. The losses must be made up with brine. The concentration process is the beginning and the end of the cycling liquors. In this process there are three evaporator units of the triple effect counter-current type, that is, there are three pans in each unit and the heat flows in one direction while the liquor flows the other way through the evaporator pans, see Fig. 4. During the evaporation process a great deal of sodium chloride, burkeite, some sodium carbonate monohydrate, and a little lithium-sodium phosphate are crystallized. The volume of these salts is so great that they must be removed as they are formed or the process would come to a standstill. Brine and recycled mother liquor No. 2 enter the third effect evaporator pan from the evaporator feed storage tanks, see Fig. 5. A steady flow of liquor is removed from the bottom of the No. 3 pan and is pumped through the No. 3 cone of the salt trap, a clear liquor being returned to the NO. 3 pan. A portion of this clear liquor is pumped to the second effect pan. This process is repeated in each pan. The liquor from the No. 2 pan is pumped through the No. 2 salt trap cone and returned to the No. 2 pan.

A novel technique for determining the surface energy (?) and its derivative with respect to orientation, (?') is described. Essentially it involves the 'floating" of a wedge on the substrate, said wedge being made of a material which is not wet or only slightly wet by the substrate, i. e., as a greased needle "floats" on water. A thermodynamic analysis of a system in which the wedge is supported entirely by surface energy is given. If the original suyface is not at a cusp orientation, the surface tension is directly measurable from the groove angle formed. If the original surface is at a cusp orientation, there may or may not be a groove depending on the relative value of ?' and the weight of the wedge. Experiments primarily on copper and silver showed that sapphire, quartz and refractory metal wedges were wet while graphite wedges were not. The technique was demonstrated to work using graphite wedges, but the results obtained were not as eccurate as those obtained by other workers using the wire-creep experiments. It is concluded that the technique might prove most useful with non-metals where ?' is large and filament creep experiments would be quite difficult. If an absolute value of the surface free energy (?) of a metal is to be determined, the most reliable methods used to date measure an average over the various orientations exposed on a polycrystalline sample. For example, ? for silver, gold, and copper have been measured by determining the force required to just keep a thin wire,' or foil,' specimen from contracting under the influence of ?. Herring 3 has predicted and experiment confirms, that the sensitivity of this method is inversely proportional to the grain size.' Thus it cannot be used to measure ? for a particular orientation by using a foil single crystal or a very coarse-grained specimen. An accurate value if ? for tungsten averaged over a range of orientations has been determined using a field emission technique. The same techniques cannot or have not been used to measure ? for non-metallic solids, and as a result the values available are much less accurate.4 This Paper resents a means of making an absolute determination of ? for a particular surface orientation on any solid, as long as the given surface orientation does not break up into other orientations during an anneal. Experimentally ? is found to vary with orientation and at a few low index orientations it is found to have a cusped minimum, i.e., the derivative of ? with respect to the orientation of the surface changes discontinuously at the low index orientation, see Fig. 1. The slope of a plot of ? vs orientation (herein designated ?') is called the torque on the surface, since it tends to rotate the exposed surface toward the low index orientation, or if the surface is at the cusp orientation it opposes any force tending to rotate the surface out of the low index orientation. The ratio ?'/? has been determined for a few metals, but in cases where this ratio is high there is presently no means of determining either ?'/? or the absolute value of ?' for the orientations present on an annealed surface. The technique discussed herein also provides a means of determining an absolute value of ?' for those orientations which deviate only infinitesimally from a cusp orientation. It should work best on surfaces where ?'/? is large; that is, for cases where no other technique is available for measuring ?'. Aside from trying to learn more about surfaces through measuring ? and ?', the primary reason for wanting values of ? or ?' is to study adsorption. From measurements of the variation of ? for a particular orientation with the concentration of an impurity, one can obtain the number of impurity atoms adsorbed per unit area (Ti) on that orientation using the Gibbs adsorption equation.' where µi is the chemical potential of the adsorbed impurity. Thus, if absolute values of ? could be obtained for the free surface of a given surface orientation as a function of µi, ri could be determined for the given orientation. Furthermore, by equilibrating a grain boundary with the given surface at various values of ki, one could also determine ri for the grain boundary. Similarly Robertson 6 has pointed out that if y is taken to be a continuous function of and µi, then a2 ?/a @a µ2 = a2 ?/a pi a +. The greatest objection to be brought against the present methods for estimating phosphorus in iron and steel, is the time consumed in the operation. The following method, originated and perfected by Mr. E. D. Campbell, assistant in the chemical laboratory of the University of Michigan, will, 1 think, if carefully followed out, give results that are sufficiently accurate for technical purposes, and will give them in less time than they can be obtained by any other process. The process consists in comparing the color obtained by the action of stannous chloride upon a solution of the phospho-molybdate precipitate obtained from the solution of iron or steel, with that obtained from a standard solution of molybdie acid which represents a given amount of phosphorus. The operation is as follows : Take of ordinary steel 1 grm. and treat as in any of the wellknown processes until the phosphorus is precipitated as ammoniumphospho-molybdate. When precipitated, the phospho-molybdate precipitate is filtered out, thoroughly washed with an acid solution of ammonium nitrate, and, finally, twice with water, to remove most of the ammonium nitrate. The precipitate is then dissolved in about 1 c. c. of 10 per cent. potassium hydrate, which is let fall drop by drop on the filter till the precipitate is dissolved ; the filter is now washed with about 25 or 30 c. c. of water, and the potassium hydrate solution, which now consists of 25-32 c. c. of solution, is boiled until the peculiar frothy appearance, which first appears on boiling, is entirely gone. The solution is then cooled until perfectly cold, and about 10 or 15 c. c. of strong hydrochloric acid added ; if the solution is kept cold this will form no precipitate, but a light yellow or colorless solution. The solution is now ready for the addition of stannous chloride, and the subsequent comparison of color produced with that obtained from the standard molybdie acid. The comparison is made in tubes that are calibrated like carbon-tubes, but which are larger, about 5/8-inch bore, and graduated to 100 c. c.; this makes them about 18 inches long. The microstructures and textures developed by the working of high-purzly thermochemically deposited tungstem sheet have been inuesligated. Greater than 60 pct reduction was required to deslroy the columnar grain structure which existed in the as-deposited sheet. With increasing reductions the texture gradu-ally charged from the initial as-deposited orientation with (100) parallel to the sheet normal to a (100}(011) ideal ovienlation with some spread about the rolling direction. This texture was retained after recrystalli-zation a1 2000°C. THE processes for depositing tungsten by hydrogen reduction of tungsten hexafluoride have been under development for the past several years.1,2 The nature of the deposition process is such that the as-deposited material contains a highly oriented columnar grain structure perpendicular to the deposition substrate. This well-defined columnar structure may be useful in certain applications293 but a wrought or equiaxed structure may be desired for some components such as tubing. Knowledge of the effects of working ther-mochemically deposited (TCD) tungsten is therefore necessary in order to establish the feasibility of obtaining worked and recrystallized microstructures and textures. The details of a recently developed technique for thermochemically depositing flat, uniformly thick tungsten sheet are presented with emphasis on the effects of deformation by rolling on the microstructure and texture. Although no work has been previously reported on the rolling and the annealing textures of TCD tungsten, there have been some determinations of textures for cold-rolled tungsten foil prepared from powder-metal -lurgy billets.4-8 The general description is that of a predominantly lurgy{100}(011) texture, with some spread about the rolling direction as an axis. pugh5 reports data both for cold-rolled and for annealed foil having about 96 pct initial cold work. He observed no change in texture, except for a decrease in the spread, for annealing treatments of 30 min at temperatures up to 1800°C. On annealing at 1900°C, both the low-temperature components plus new components which were described alternately as {001}(320) plus {001)(230) or as {100}(011) ± 12 deg about the sheet normal were observed. Above 1900°C, the new orientation existed alone, and it was stable up to 2500°C, the highest temperature that Pugh investigated. THERMOCHEMICAL DEPOSITION OF TUNGSTEN SHEET High-purity tungsten sheet was reproducibly deposited on the inner walls of a molybdenum mandrel by the thermochemical reaction WFs(g) + 3H2(g) - W(s) + 6HF(g). The mandrel was heated by a five-zone tube furnace which afforded a controllable fixed-temperature profile. Sheets measuring 1+ by 12 in. have been deposited with uniform thicknesses of up to 0.145 m. As shown schematically in Fig. 1, the purified reaction gases were metered into a mixing chamber at a Hz-to-WF6 ratio of 15 and preheated to 350°C. The flow rate of the WF6 was 300 cu cm per min at stp. These gases were directed through a conical injector into the deposition chamber. Inside this chamber hydrogen reduction of the WF6 to pure tungsten metal occurred on the hot walls of the molybdenum mandrel at a total pressure of 5 Torr. This paper deals with equimolar solutions of xanthate and alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide adsorption on copper, nickel and sphalerite powders. After an exposition of the experimental methods used and the results obtained, a thorough discussion leads to the conclusion that some molecular association between xanthates and CnTAB's does take place in the bulk of the solution as well as at the air/liquid interface. A spectrophotometric study of xanthate solutions alone and their mixtures with equimolar amounts of alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CnTAB) has established the additivity of ultraviolet spectra (190 to 400 mµ) for potassium ethyl xanthate (KEtX) and C12TAB. No obvious effect of C12TAB addition on the decomposition rate of KEtX was observed, the half life of which was established as 29±3 days at 22°C and pH ~ 6. In mixed solutions of longer xanthate homologues (e.g. hexyl and nonyl) and equimolar CnTAB, colloidal precipitates are gradually formed which contain primarily the corresponding xanthate molecules. The kinetics of collector abstraction by copper, nickel and sphalerite powders were studied in 10-5 to 10"3 M solutions of KEtX alone and in equimolar mixtures of KEtX and CI2TAB. Presence of C12TAB caused a two to three fold increase in the amounts of xanthate (equivalent to many monolayers) abstracted by copper and nickel powders (and in their rates of abstraction) but had no effect on the abstraction of xanthate by unactivated sphalerite (equivalent to less than a monolayer). The adsorption of C12TAB itself from the mixed solutions was very low, at most one monolayer only, and was not influenced by the nature of the solid powder used. A change in the rates of abstraction, observed with copper powder, was interpreted as a completion of a multilayer coating (completely enveloping the grains of powder) following which the rate of reaction between solution and substrate becomes controlled by diffusion through this coating. Work of Buckenham and Schulmanl on molecular associations between different collectors has shown unusual synergistic effects in flotation of individual minerals using mixtures of xanthates and alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromides. The objectives of the present work were: 1) to determine whether these molecular associations between the two types of collectors (indicated by strong surface tension lowering in Buckenham and Schulman's work) take place at the air/liquid interface only or in the bulk of solution as well 2) to establish whether different solids adsorb any species from the mixture of these amphipatic molecules preferentially or as molecular complexes 3) to establish whether there are any differences in the kinetics of adsorption. Metallic copper and sphalerite powder were chosen as adsorbents since they represent two extremes since copper readily adsorbs multilayers of xanthate (and is easily floated with ethyl xanthate) while unactivated sphalerite does not appreciably adsorb xanthate but is known to be readily floated by the amine type collectors. The industrial importance of the sillimanite group of minerals depends upon the beneficial properties exhibited by porcelains and refractories in which substantial amounts of these minerals are utilized as raw materials. The presence of "sillimanite" (now known to be the closely related mineral, mullite) in conventional porcelains and refractories has been known since before the turn of the century. As early as 1906 German investigators observed a direct correlation between the "sillimanite" content of a porcelain and its electrical and mechanical properties. Acting upon this discovery, U. S. Bureau of Standards investigators during World War I developed improved pyrometer tubes and spark plug porcelains, by increasing substantially the amount of "sillimanite" at the expense of quartz. The success of these experiments, first reported in 1918, at once aroused a lively interest in the location of natural sources of sillimanite and its related minerals. As a result of diligent search, the large andalusite deposits in California were discovered in 1919. Within the next several years large deposits of kyanite and sillimanite in India and kyanite in the United States had been reported. The search for these minerals in quantity, by both private and governmental agencies, has continued unabated during the ensuing forty years. A number of domestic deposits of kyanite have been worked during the past 30 years. Of these, only the Virginian and South Carolinian deposits are currently in substantial production. The only commercial andalusite production in the United States has been in California and Nevada. A dumortierite deposit in Nevada, known since 1917 but ignored for want of a commercial use, began production in 1925. A topaz occurrence in South Carolina has yielded a small production since about 1940. Domestic production of andalusite, dumortierite and topaz had virtually ceased by 1950. There has never been any commercial development of domestic sillimanite deposits. Kyanite has been mined almost continuously in India since about 1922. The remoteness of the large deposits of Indian sillimanite had caused it to be neglected until 1949. In that year sillimanite production began, and it has continued to the present. South African andalusite has been marketed from the 1930's until the present time. From 1944 to 1955 Kenya, British East Africa, was an important producer of kyanite. Commercial deposits of kyanite in Ontario, Canada should soon be in production. The first production of kyanite in Europe began in Austria in 1953. No commercial deposits of mullite are known anywhere in the world. It is of interest to note that synthetic mullite, which as "sillimanite" first elicited interest in the A12O3-rich aluminosilicate refractories, has enjoyed a marked increase in production in recent years. This is a result of the gradual depletion of known deposits of high-quality kyanite and related minerals."' From variation in Young's modulus and Vicker's hardness during GPl zone formation in A1-2 at. pct Cu the following was observed: 1) the presence of grain boundaries does not have any perceptible? effect on the aging reaction; 2) the modulus charge is orientation dependent; 3) the activation energy for zone growth is confirmed to be 11 * 1 kcal per mole; 4) reaging after reversion is preceded by an incubation time that varies with temperature. An analysis is applied to the present data and to data of other workers and kinetic laws dependent on the quenching rate are determined. In Al-base Cu alloys the decomposition product of a supersaturated solid solution at low temperatures (for example 25°C) and the first product at moderate temperatures (for example 150oC) are Guinier-Preston zones of the first kind (GPI).' This somewhat misnomered "continuous" face section is, in most mines today, still far from perfect continuity. Achieving uninterrupted flow of coal from the mining machine to the outside has been a long sought for goal. Clearly, the largest problem to be solved in continuous mining today is one of increasing the cutting time of the miner. Full machine utilization can never be achieved with the new high capacity miners as long as their performance is tied to that of the shuttle car. A recent development has proven, however, that truly continuous mining and haulage is possible. The Bell & Zoller Coal Co. working with the Research and Development Department of Hewitt-Robins Inc. developed and perfected a new mining system which offers advantages in terms of increased productivity at reduced mining costs and enhances the safety of personnel at the face. This new system involves the use of two pieces of equipment that form an unbroken link between the mining machine and the mine belt haulage system. These pieces are a Mobile Bridge Conveyor and an Extensible Panel Conveyor.
