Deformed copper single crystals exhibited, upon annealing, a recrystallized twinned grain with a twin plane parallel to an active deformation plane, rotated approximately 22" about its pole, or else did not recrystallize at all. If extraneous deformation was not carefully removed, no simple orientation relationship was found. RECRYSTALLIZATION textures have been a subject of practical interest for many years, but any real understanding of their formation will have to start with a study of the recrystallization of carefully deformed single crystals. Some efforts have been made in this direction,'-' but much more experimental information is needed before a satisfactory picture of the crystallography of recrystallization can be formed. This paper reports a few results in copper single crystals. The crystals studied in this investigation were grown by the Bridgman method," and their orientations determined by the back-reflection Laue technique." Some specimens were simply deformed in compression, others were sheared, and still others tested in a rotating-grip device, in attempts to remove end constraints. The details of their deformation behavior are described elsewhere.' The deformed specimens were annealed and the orientations of the recrystallized grains were determined optically, as described by Barrett and Levenson.8 Compressed Specimens Specimen 17-A, whose orientation is given in Fig. 1, was compressed to a total of 19 pct. As observed before,' increasing deformation took place by increasing density of slip lines in initially formed clusters, with little if any formation of new slip clusters in unslipped areas. The specimen was then etched in nitric acid until its length had been reduced from 0.766 to 0.735 in. It was annealed at 1000°C, in increments of a few minutes. After 63 min, two small grains had appeared in the center, Fig. 2. They were found to be twinned with respect to each other (AB, Fig. 4). After 30 min more, the specimen was completely recrystallized. A typical view of it is given in Fig. 3. A summary of all orientations found is given in Fig. 4, in which the prominent grain G is in (001) standard projection, and the poles of the active slip planes after deformation are indicated by SP (primary slip plane), CrSP (cross-slip plane), and CnSP (conjugate slip plane). All the orientations found were related through seven orders of twinning. A "family tree" of these twins is given in Fig. 5. According to statistics that have been compiled by the National Safety Council, U.S. Bureau of Mines, American Medical Association, and other agencies, accidental injuries cause more deaths than all the leading diseases. There isn't anyone who is immune to an accident. Probably the best way to describe an accident is to say that it is an unexpected happening. The automobile driver isn't expecting a terrifying crash, the electrician isn't expected to be electrocuted, nor is the coal miner expecting the roof to fall on him. All personal injuries will not result in death. There is a multitude of victims who are living proof of what accidents can mean to an individual. These are the victims who are blind, paralytic, missing arms, legs, etc. In most instances the earning power of these individuals is gone, and they are utterly dependent upon family or welfare. For many years there seemed to be an attitude that prevailed upon industrial America that accidents were inevitable, and that so many fatalities and injuries should be expected. This, of course, was utter nonsense. Since the birth of such organizations as The National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, much progress has been made in reducing accidents. The enactment of compensation laws greatly contributed to the progress that has been made. Does this mean that all accidents can be prevented? Unfortunately, it doesn't. Human psychology indicates that men will work unsafely or perform unsafe acts for the following reasons: 1) Lack of knowledge or skill. 2) Conflicting motivations, such as: (a) to be more comfortable, (b) to save time or effort, (c) to be accepted by a group 3) Physical or mental condition.

The Seminole field was first drilled in 1913. During the next 10 years other attempts were made to discover oil in this field, but without encouragement until March, 1926, when the Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Co. completed NO. 1 Dyer in the Hunton lime for 1100 bbl. On July 16, 1926, the Independent-Garland interests discovered oil in the Wilcox formation when No. 1 T. Fixico came in at 4055 ft. and on Sept. 9, 1926, production reached a peak of 8040 bbl. On Aug. 1, 1927, the daily production of the pools making up the Seminole district amounted to slightly over 500,000 bbl., practically all of which was coming from the Wilcox formation. The Hunton formation has not been very productive of oil, but has maintained a fairly high gas pressure; this formation has been encountered at from 3800 to 4200 ft., below which there is about 100 ft. of Sylvan shale. The shale is underlain by 75 ft. of Viola limestone in a few places in which formation oil has been encountered. Below the Viola lies the upper Simpson formation in which is found the Wilcox sand. The depth of the Wilcox in the Seminole field varies from 3900 to 4500 ft., and initial production has reached as much as 12,000 bbl. The gravity of the oil is about 41° Be. The general practice is to set 6 5/8 -in. casing above the Wilcox and drill in, though in several cases 5 3/16-in. casing has been set for the oil string, and in a few instances, casing as small as 4 3/4 in. has been employed. Production Statistics Production for the Seminole district for the various months since its discovery is shown in Table 1.

The fact that coal is a complex organic material and heterogeneous in composition has made its study extremely difficult, particularly in regard to obtaining a fundamental concept of the processes involved in the formation of coke. It has been stated1 recently that coals are natural polymers and that in a complex reaction such as occurs during carbonization the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. Such being the case, it would be expected, therefore, that a series of coals subjected to exactly the same conditions of coking would produce results that should be related quantitatively to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. In the past, however, this fact was not generally recognized and consequently many empirical test methods were devised for testing coals. The interpretation of the results obtained depended upon comparing a set of data with other data on coals of known characteristics. The testing procedure had to be conducted in precisely the same manner each time and not the least requirement in making the interpretation was experience. The test methods varied from those utilizing a gram of coal to the plant-scale tests in which one or more ovens were charged with the test coal. The aim had been principally to find some simple, inexpensive means by which the coke-making and other properties of coal could be predicted. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of these endeavors, for anyone acquainted with the problems involved in the selection of coals for making coke is well aware of the time and expense involved in making a series of definitive tests. Several attempts have been made to derive formulas for such predictions. The relations of both ultimate and proximate analyses to coke physical properties and byproduct yields have been studied. Lowry and co-workers1 correlated statistically the U. S. Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association assay test results with coal analyses, using 90 coals and coal blends. Parry,² Spooner,3 and Gabinskii and Krym4 made similar correlations. Lowry concluded that there were definite relationships between the proximate analyses of the coals and the yields and properties of the products. Although this statistical study was made on test results from carbonizing coal in a cylindrical steel retort, the conclusions are important and provided one of the first steps in the simplification of this complex subject. Studies should be made of other references on this subject just cited. Studies of the coking process reported in the literature frequently were confined to a small number of coals, and very few have included coals from various ranks. It would seem logical, however, that a program for studying factors involved in the formation of coke should be based on a number of coals selected from each of the various classes or types of coking coal. Expressions are derived for tke orientation factors appearing in the Grana to -Lucke theory of dislocation damping, for fcc crystals. The factors are given as functions of the elastic constants, the direction cosines of the specimen axis, atld the direction cosines of the particle displacemeizts, for darnping due to dislocation motion on each of the twelve possible slip systems as ixell as lor simultaneous dislocation rnotion on all twelve systems. RECENTLY Green' has outlined the general procedure for calculation of the modes of wave propagation in a single crystal possessing a given crystallo-graphic orientation. In addition he has suggested how the results of such calculations along with calculations of the resolved shear-stress factors for slip enable the orientation-dependent factors (orientation factors) appearing in the Granato-Lucke theory of dislocation damping to be calculated. However, reen' assumed that the maximum stress on dislocations was in the direction of the particle displacement of the elastic wave giving rise to the dislocation damping. The present cal'culations show that this is an oversimplified approach appropriate only to special cases of high crystallographic symmetry. The exact calculation of stress on the dislocations can only be obtained by resolving the nine components of stress associated with the elastic wave into the appropriate slip direction and then summing. In this paper the general expressions for orientation factors are derived for fcc crystals in terms of the elastic constants, the direction cosines of the particle displacements, and the direction cosines of the specimen axis, bearing in mind the point mentioned above. Equations are presented which give the orientation factors for damping due to dislocation motion on each of the twelve possible slip systems as well as for simultaneous dislocation motion on all twelve systems arising from elastic-wave propagation. These orientation factors are appropriate to attenuation measurements made by the pulse-echo technique, where the elastic wave is a traveling wave. They will be compared with those for the case of a standing wave as derived by Granato and Lucke which are appropriate to measurements of internal friction by the resonance technique. The expressions for the orientation factors are compared with the five values given by insruch,' based on unpublished work of Granato and Liicke, for positions of highest symmetry in the stereographic triangle. The various equations derived for modes of wave propagation and orientation factors have been evaluated for the case of aluminum crystals at 1-deg intervals throughout the stereographic triangle. These results will be presented in the form of contour diagrams in a subsequent paper3 and their relevance to ultrasonic measurements discussed. ORIENTATION FACTORS The coordinate system used for the calculations is shown in Fig. 1 and all specimen axes are taken to lie in the shaded standard triangle. DURING the past few years there has been a growing demand by coal operators for detailed information about the performance characteristics of the various dryers now being manufactured, preferably in such a form that the information could be used to determine the type of dryer best suited to a particular drying problem. A few operators have been desirous of going even further, because they are of the opinion that present-day dryers are not properly designed and that fundamental studies of dryer design should be undertaken. This growing demand for a method of dryer evaluation and the indicated need for fundamental research resulted in the sponsorship by Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. of a project at Battelle Memorial Institute to investigate the thermal drying of coal. In investigating this problem, the most feasible method of attack appeared to be a survey of active operations to determine the present status of the thermal drying of coal. Data were obtained, usually by actual plant tests with the cooperation of the various preparation engineers and their staffs, for Q screen-type dryers, 8 rotary- type dryers, 3 continuous-pallet-type dryers, 2 flash-type dryers, I tray-type dryer, and I cascade-type dryer. The testing program provided: (I) data for 24 coal- drying operations, (2) information about dried, (3) information about the previous treatment that the coal had received, and (4) information about operating costs. The data obtained through the dryer survey and relationships determined from the data make it evident that all of the types of dryers included in the survey can be operated with the same degree of effectiveness if each type of dryer is used to dry the sizes of coal for which it is best suited. It should be noted that it is usually undesirable and often impossible to dry different sizes of coal in one type of dryer. By use of the data in the report, any prospective dryer user, having determined the surface moisture percentage and screen- size analysis of the coal to be dried, the tons of water to be removed per hour, and the final surface moisture percentage desired, should be able to determine with a fair degree of accuracy: (I) the difficulty of the drying problem, (2) the approximate cost of drying, (3) the required dryer inlet gas temperature and volume and exhaust gas temperature and volume, (4) the type of dryer to use, and (5) the size of dryer required. The method of testing the dryers and determining the difficulty of drying can be used by operators already having dryers to check the performance of their particular dryer and determine whether they are operating effectively. Considerably more information was obtained from the survey of thermal drying than was anticipated when the survey was first considered. SiR Humphry Davy's epoch-making treatise delivered on Nov. 9, 1815, before the Philosophical Society of London, first announced and demonstrated a flame safety lamp for detecting methane in mine air. Coal mining was known in England as early as 1180, more than 600 years before the advent of a safe lighting and gas-detecting appliance. Mining, no doubt, took place first in outcrop coal, and danger from gas did not become apparent until the workings became deeper and more extensive. Davy's lamp did much to increase the safety of miners, and a modified Davy lamp is still widely used for detecting the presence and approximate amount of combustible gas in mine air. No factor in coal mining has improved more rapidly during the past 15 years than safety measures. This progress came about not only as a result of the workmen's compensation laws now in force in most of the states of the Union, but because the research work of the U. S. Bureau of Mines had demonstrated some dangers incident to coal mining which were not considered to be serious matters prior to that time. Electric power and explosives are necessary but potential hazards in American coal mines. A general mechanization program is now under way, while the mines are growing deeper and more extensive. Consequently ventilation problems are more complex and a demand has been created for positive detecting devices for carbon monoxide as well as methane. Scientists and manufacturers, working hand in hand during the past 10 years, have invented and developed appliances which make systematic and effective examination of mine air possible. The object of this paper is to describe briefly the approved testing devices in use today, with the hope that they may lead to the saving of life. Two Groups of Dangerous Coal Mine Gases Dangerous coal mine gases may be placed in two groups: (I) those that are dangerous because of their explosive properties, and (2) those that are dangerous because of their toxic properties. Methane (CH4) is the important gas of the first group, and in so-called gaseous mines constantly exudes from the coal and rock; it may accumulate and form an explosive mixture. The rates of nucleation and growth at various temperatures in U-0.45, 1.1, and 1.35 at. pet Cr alloys were determined, providing a qliantitative proo-f that the transformation under study is controlled by nucleation and diffusional growth. The linear relationship, log NV US 1/T2, suggests that the nucleation of the alloys is probably controlled by the classical law of nuclei formation. The established linear relationship, log G us 1/T, in the three alloys suggests that growth in each alloy is controlled by bidimensional nuclei formation. It was established that both the rate of growth and the rale of nucleation are retarded by chromium. Using classical formulae, sApN and sApG (the ß/a apparent interphase energies) were calculated from the nucleation and growth results, respectively. It was found that their values are of the same order of magnitude. However, why sApN is unaffected by the addition of chromium, while sApG increases with it, needs further clarification. In the last few years, an appreciable amount of research has been conducted into the mechanism of the ß —a transformation in uranium and uranium alloys. Recently, Burke1 reviewed the published work concerned with this transformation. He concluded that in dilute uranium alloys it is firmly established that, at high temperatures in the a range, ß decomposes by a diffusional process. However, he based his conclusion either on experiments dealing with the over-all transformation,2 or on qualitative results.3 It was felt that a better insight into the mechanism of transformation could be gained from the quantitative measurements of growth and nucleation rates, which we aimed to carry out in the present work. In a previous work,4 we have shown that a rim of a grains is formed during isothermal transformation at the high a range. The thickening of this rim with time was used for measuring the rate of growth in U-0.45 at. pet Cr.5 This method was also used in the present work for two more alloys. For meas- uring the rate of nucleation, a method of quenching and macroetching was developed to allow differentiation between a grains formed during isothermal transformation at the upper a range and those formed after quenching, Fig. 1. Abstract-The Henderson ore body is east of the Continental Divide in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, about 80 km (50 miles) west of Denver. The ore body is being developed for mining by workings that extend more than 1100 m (3500 ft) below the topographic surface. During construction of the mine workings, ground water in fractures in crystalline rocks has been encountered. From 1969 to 1973, Charles S. Robinson B Associates Inc., in cooperation with the engineering and geologic staffs of the Climax Molybdenum Company, a division of Amax Inc., studied the ground water geology of the Henderson mine development area. Detailed geologic records of the Henderson mine were available as a result of the exploration, evaluation and development of the mine. Records of the flow, chemical composition and temperature of the ground water at and near the surface, from the entire mine, from portions of the mine, and from exploration holes drilled in the mine, were kept as the mine was developed. Where possible, ground water pressures in drill holes and changes in pressure with time, were recorded. The geologic, hydrologic and chemical data were correlated. The following conclusions were drawn from the correlations: The ground water in the Henderson mine occurs in fractures in Precambrian igneous and metasedimentay rocks and in a series of Tertiary intrusive rocks. Two zones of ground water were recognized; an active zone, in which the fracture systems are recharged and discharged annually into the surface water system, and a passive zone, in which the fractures were filled with water in the geologic past Discharge from the passive zone is through mine workings that intersect the fracture systems. Discharge from a fracture or fracture system is initially high but decreases with time. The rate of decrease inflow (or pressure) is exponential. By measuring the change inflow with time, it is possible to calculate the amount of flow at some given period of time in the future. Based on changes in rate of flow and pressure, and the geology, and assuming rates of mining of the ore, it will be possible to predict the volumes of water that will have to be handled during the life of the mine and the area around the mine that will be drained by the mining operation.

This paper deals with only one step in the treatment of ore at the West End mill; not because the other steps are repetitions of practice in other mills, but because in this particular step there is in use the Trent agitator: This device, although it has apparently failed in many mills, is here giving excellent service and has proved to be well adapted for making a thorough replacement of pregnant solution with a minimum amount of barren solution. The strong and weak points of this agitator, its present simple construction, and its use as a thickener for agitator or battery pulp are features of interest; but perhaps the point of greatest interest to the metallurgist in this day of continuous decantation is its use in a series of tanks for slime treatment by the replacement method. The agitating department of the West End mill consists of six redwood tanks, 24 ft. in diameter, 18 ft. high, each equipped with a Trent agitator, a centrifugal pump, and a motor. The pulp is transferred by a pump from the top of a flat-bottomed tank to a set of arms and nozzles in the bottom of the tank, at just sufficient pressure to cause the arms to revolve. The streams from the many nozzles keep the bottom of the tank clean, and these streams, coupled with the effect of the revolving mechanism and the ascending current, keep the pulp in constant motion and of constant gravity. These agitating tanks hold 90 tons of dry slime and 202 tons of solution with a 1.24 pulp, our ore having a specific gravity of 2.7. This capacity is about 10 per cent. in excess of the standard 15 by 45 ft. Pachuca tank. The tanks are connected in one series for continuous agitation, the pulp for each agitator being drawn by its pump through a branch suction from near the top of the preceding tank and delivered to the bottom of the tank by the agitator arms along with the regular pulp of that agitator. This method works automatically, since the flow through the branch suction varies directly with the difference in head of the two tanks. The chance for new pulp to pass out quickly is, therefore, much less than in many other systems of continuous agitation, since the new

THE failure, or disintegration, of concrete in structures, even when the cement, sand, and coarse aggregate used have passed satisfactorily all tests and inspections, is not uncommon. Such failures occur even when proper methods of mixing and placing have been used and where, weather conditions were correct. In these cases, the origin of the trouble must be sought in the cement, therefore some additional mode of determining the quality of cement must be employed. The problem is to find a simple, usable; easily applied method that will supplement the standard tests. The solution of this problem in-volves a knowledge of the chemical composition of Portland cements, also of their constitution (or componental composition), as the behavior of a cement, when gaged, is dependent on the physical and chemical characters of the compounds of which it is composed, the proportions existing between them, and the fineness of grinding. It is likewise essential to know the character, behavior, and composition of the hydration, products of Portland cement. The most promising method of attack makes use of chemical, mechanical, and petrographic methods. Chemical, by determining quantitatively not only the usual constituents, but the carbon dioxide and water. Mechanical, by determining the fineness with the air analyzer,1 which separates into fractions of various grain dimensions all of that portion, which in the ordinary sieve test passes the 200-mesh sieve and constitutes at least 75 per cent. of the total cement. These fractions may be further studied chemically and petrographically and micrometric measurements made of the grains. Petrographic, by the method of immersion, and by making thin sections from test pats of both neat cements and standard` mortars.

Since the end of World War 11 interest has been increasing in the use of shaped charges in the mining industry and in other industries using explosives for blasting purposes. Shaped charges employ the principle known as the "Munroe effect," which was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888). Details of their design have been explained elsewhere.1,2,3 Fig I shows the essential features of design of two types of shaped charges (with conical and hemispherical cavities) and a schematic sketch of their action upon detonation. The following discussion deals with the behavior of the metal in the cavity liners when they are subjected to intense Pressures exerted when the explosive charge is detonated. Among the conclusions reached in research on shaped explosive charges, the following have been established conceming cavity liners:1'2 I. The optimum wall thickness of a conical cavity liner is dependent upon the apex angle of the cone as well as On the base diameter of the charge. Acute apex angles require thinner walls for optimum perfonnance and more obtuse angles require thicker walls for the same base diameter. '. Cones were more effective in forming a penetrating jet when the walls were tapered; that is, the thickness of the wall of the cone increased from the apex down. 3. The physical and mechanical properties of metals have a marked effect upon their performance as cavity-liner material. Boiling point, ductility, malleability, ten-sile strength, and hardness are among the properties that influence the effectiveness of a metal used as a cavity liner. Lead, for example, makes a wide, flat crater in steel plates. Aluminum makes a deeper crater than lead, and an aluminum alloy having a high tensile strength makes a deeper hole, but slightly smaller in diameter. Cast iron makes a deep, narrow hole. These findings, together with the following analysis under Metallographic Survey of slug, offer solutions to many of the problems involved in solving the mechanism of the formation of Munroe jets. It has been fairly well established that cavity liners collapse in a manner similar to that indicated in Fig 2, Conical liners are known to collapse upon themselves while hemispherical liners are believed to turn inside out in the process of jet formation. The first has been definitely proved by recovery of collapsed portions of cones, while liners from partly detonated charges show that hemispheres may turn inside out. Fig 3 shows a sketch of a recovered slug from a 6-in. shaped charge using a 45" cone made of cast iron. (This size of charge drilled holes up to 3 ft in depth in solid granodiorite.)

In a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown that the technical cohesion limit is affected by the same four factors that affect the flow stress, namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate.16-28 Moreover, each of these factors affects the technical cohesion limit in the same way that it affects the flow stress,t The influence of any one of these factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. As the term ilfracture stress' has come into use with the same significance as 'ctechnical cohesion limit," the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the flow of notched and unnotched specimens betqrcen yield and fracture, A study has thus been made of the flow and fracture of metals as affected by the stress system, and of the ductility of metals as affected by the stress system throughout plastic deformation. Since two of the principal stresses were equal (S2 = S3), the stress systems can be represented in terms of the radial stress ratio, the ratio of the transverse radial stress s3 to the longitudinal stress S1.* The results of the experiments are represented by a series of their flow-stress curves for each Of the metals investigated, and these diagrams have been used for the development Of Other diagrams Of various types. Ludwik was the first to suggest that fracture occurs when the flow stress becomes equal to a technical cohesion limit. Although Ludwik was incorrect in his view that the technical cohesion limit depends only on the amount of plastic deformation and not On the stress system, he was 'Orrect in his view that the flow-stress curve for any stress system terminates at a point representing a technical cohesion limit. The authors have seen some recent references to assertions by other investigators that a point representing the fracture stress need not be on the flow-stress curve. The Ludwik principle, however, "auld Seem to be axiomatic, provided that the flow Stress and fracture stress are properly defined and that the fracture stress is properly determined. Disregard Of this principle has led to some untenable theories Of criteria for fracture. When a metal is very ductile, the conventional method of determining the ductility and fracture stress by dividing the breaking load by the sectional area after fracture, generally gives values that are much too high. The occurrence of outcrops of bituminous schists and sandstones impregnated with heavy asphaltie petroleum first directed attention to the São Pedro area as a possible source of commercial production of petroleum. Since 1920, more than 20 wells have been drilled in this area. The discovery of oil shows and small quantities of natural gas in some of the early wells led to the continuation of drilling in the hope that more important findings would result. During the early part of 1934, detailed magnetometer observations were made in this area, and a considerable number of torsion balance stations were occupied. The results of these geophysical observations help considerably to clarify the structure of the area and the very considerable amount of geologic information available makes possible a much more exact interpretation of geophysical anomalies. In presenting the results of these observations, and interpretation of the geophysical data, certain actual case problems are included; i.e., geophysical anomalies due to anomalous masses of which the forms and positions are more or less known. Although anomalies due to igneous intrusions are probably more important to geophysicists in Brazil than in other countries, these data have a certain interest for all geophysicists, particularly because they were obtained in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the lines of magnetic force are directed upward, and in a region of moderately low inclination. This is considered as a geological-geophysical problem, and only passing mention will be given to the petroleum possibilities of the area. The occurrence of outcrops of bituminous schists and sandstones impregnated with heavy asphaltie petroleum first directed attention to the São Pedro area as a possible source of commercial production of petroleum. Since 1920, more than 20 wells have been drilled in this area. The discovery of oil shows and small quantities of natural gas in some of the early wells led to the continuation of drilling in the hope that more important findings would result. During the early part of 1934, detailed magnetometer observations were made in this area, and a considerable number of torsion balance stations were occupied. The results of these geophysical observations help considerably to clarify the structure of the area and the very considerable amount of geologic information available makes possible a much more exact interpretation of geophysical anomalies. In presenting the results of these observations, and interpretation of the geophysical data, certain actual case problems are included; i.e., geophysical anomalies due to anomalous masses of which the forms and positions are more or less known. The following paper, submitted by the Russian petroleum authorities, was secured through the courtesy of G. V. Ackerman, Vice President of Amtorg Trading Corporation, and N. V. Vannikoff, Representative in the U.S.A. of the United Oil and Gas Industries of the U.S.S.R. It gives an excellent view of the Russian petroleum industry as seen through Russian eyes. Noteworthy is the tremendous area over which the Russians are searching for petroleum, for this paper refers to such far-flung areas as the Arctic Tamir Peninsula, Kamchatka and Sakhalin on the Pacific, Lake Baikal in Central Siberia, the great new discovery at Neftadag in the plains of West Turkestan, and the oil of the Ferghana oasis, where the derricks look out over to the mosques of Kokand. Of interest also is the new pipe line to supply the industrial centers of Ukraine grouped around the great hydroelectric plant built at Dneprotroy on the falls of the Dnieper. The technical achievements have been noteworthy and we must pause to consider the scope of the undertakings being carried forward. Russia is at the worst a good second to the United States in petroleum reserves and for a long time to come will be a most important factor in the petroleum markets of the world. Her story should be of interest to everyone in the industry. The First Five Year Plan The first Five Year Plan, covering the period 1928-29 to 1932, accomplished the task of transforming the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from an agricultural, backward land into a powerful independent industrial country, with an advanced technological foundation of its own for finally achieving the social reconstruction of the entire national economy. Along with the gigantic forward 'strides in industry and transportation, radical changes took place in agriculture. The creation of more than 5000 great state farms and of more than 200,000 collective farms serviced by a widespread network of machine-tractor stations has brought the U.S.S.R. to the fore as the largest agricultural country in the world. Imports of tractors and other agricultural machinery in the initial years of the Five Year Plan and the intensive output of this equipment by the great plants of the U.S.S.R. in the latter years of the plan have brought about the mechanization of agriculture in the Soviet Union. In a recent study1 of the deformation of metastable beta copper-zinc and beta copper-tin crystals, it was established that the parallel markings that appear on the surface of these crystals after slight deformation represent lattice transformations. Stereographic analysis showed that in beta copper-tin, the poles of these markings deviated one or two degrees from poles of the form {133}. In beta copper-zinc the plane delineated by the markings corresponded to no one crystallographic plane of the matrix lattice; the marking poles deviated from 5° to 11° from poles of the form (110), and were displaced only a few degrees from (110) zones. Inasmuch as the new transition lattices produced as the result of the deformation are different for each alloy, it was thought at first that the habits of the markings might be the result of a cooperation between matrix lattice and transformed lattice. (Both matrix lattices arc body-centered cubic.) Such a cooperative effect is thought to obtain in the formation of Widmanstätten figures, for it is well known that the matrix lattice alone does not determine the habit assumed by a segregate phase. On the other hand, it is not inconceivable that the dissimilarity in marking habit might be due to differences in deformation characteristics of beta brass and beta bronze. Barrett and co-workers2 have shown that slip-line habits in pure iron are markedly different from those in high-silicon ferrite; and although it has been repeatedly demonstrated that plates of a segregate phase do not necessarily form on the slip planes of the matrix lattice, deformation characteristics may be more intimately allied with plate formation when a transformation is made to occur as a result of plastic deformation. However, there is the fact that the orientation of markings in metastable beta copper-zinc is the same whether the markings be produced by quenching, deformation, or liquid-air cooling; likewise, quenching and deformation markings in metastable beta copper-tin are oriented in the same way with respect to the beta matrix. ALTHOUGH iron ores occur in many parts of Sweden the two principal deposits are those at Grängesberg (see accompanying map) and at Kiirunavaara-Gellivare. Both of these deposits are con-trolled by a holding company, Trajikaktiebolaget Grängesberg-Oxelösund, which sells annually about one-half of, the iron in ore traded in world markets and has a fleet of 24 seagoing ore boats, with a total dead weight capacity of 172,500 tons. Because of its pre-eminence in international iron ore trade a brief outline of its operations will be of interest. ORE DEPOSITS OF GRÄNGESBERG The Grängesberg deposits have been known since the Middle Ages, but up to the middle of the nineteenth century the ore was transported from the mines to the furnaces in winter in. sleighs. Railway building began in 1853, and in 1873 the complicated structure of capital investment was tottering, but the basic bessemer process created a demand for ore high in phosphorus, as this is, and refinancing on the initiative of Sir Ernest Cassel put the principal operation on a firm footing. There are numerous property owners in the district, but they are all controlled by a joint administration board, and 90 per cent of the ore is produced by a subsidiary of the Grängesberg company from proper-ties which it either owns or leases. The ore, a mixture of magnetite and specular hematite, is in lenticular bodies, dipping about 70 E. in. fine-grained gneiss, and contains about 61 per cent Fe and 1 per. cent. P. There are two principal veins; the total ore reserves to a depth of 500 meters are estimated at 150,000,000 tons. As seen in the accompanying illustration, the ores were first worked in open cuts, but eventually underground shrinkage stoping was adopted. Difficulties were encountered in the support of the workings and from the freezing of the ore in the stopes, so slicing was adopted, although block-caving is used in one place. Most of the mining is now done at a depth "of 150 to 190 meters. The present annual output is about 1,400,-000 tons of crude ore, which yields about 1,000,000 tons of concentrate after being subjected to magnetic con-centration and jigging.

THE SAMPLING of waste materials containing copper, lead and tin has taken on a new significance within recent years, and is of increasing importance, on account of the entry of some of the copper refineries into this field and the tendency towards consolidations among the smelters. In the past, such material was sold on the basis either of a rough or grab sample or of casual inspection of the lot. The two principal sources of this waste are the processes of fabrication and the scrapping of automobile, electrical, plumbing, railroad and other equipment. In both cases much material can be sorted, salvaged and sold by classification and grade to be melted "as is" or with the addition of new or virgin metal. The increasing care in classifying exercised in the large manufacturing plants tends to increase the proportion of this usable scrap; on the contrary, the increasing use of more complex and special non-ferrous alloys tends to make sorting and grading more difficult in turnings, borings, clippings, etc., and consequently is making sampling of more moment. In tin, lead, aluminum, and zinc furnace by-products such as ashes, drosses, skimmings, etc., the trade practice of evaluation has not varied much. For instance, tin drosses, battery lead, and aluminum skimmings are ordinarily sold on what is called "metallic button" or "metallic recovery" or "metallic yield." Copper and lead waste, however, is being sold more and more on actual copper and lead contents based on sample and chemical analyses. This paper will be devoted chiefly to the sampling of materials suitable only for refining and recovery of one or more of the metals present. The methods described are often based on the fact that but one metal, such as copper, is to be paid for. The loss of volatile constituents in melting does not appreciably affect the final copper result, as the "after-melting" assay can be readily calculated to the "before-melting" basis, but if smelter efficiency continues to increase, so that in time zinc, for instance, may be recovered on a paying basis, the method of sampling dirty brass, for example, will have to be changed also.
