THERE has been little investigation of the gold-germanium binary alloys. Haughton1 does not mention any work on the system. In a review article commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of germanium, E. Einecke2 mentioned a gold germanium eutectic at 24 atomic per cent Ge (10.4 weight per cent) melting at 359°C., but did not give the source of his information. From measurements of electrical conductivity, J. 0. Linde3 estimated that at least o.6 weight per cent germanium is soluble in gold. The recent availability of germanium in this country in commercial quantities has led to interest in its properties and its alloys. This study is part of a program of investigation on germanium alloys; work on ternary alloys involving germanium and gold will be reported later. In this investigation, the composition and melting point of the Au-Ge eutectic reported by Einecke has been found to be substantially correct. Eutectic composition has been placed at 12,0 per cent germanium, however. An alloy of 10.4 per cent Ge, Einecke's value, was found to have a few gold dendrites in it. The eutectic temperature has been determined as 356.0 ± 0.5°C., slightly less than the temperature of 359°C reported by Einecke. The liquidus curves and the solid solubility of germanium in gold have been determined, and are shown in Fig. I. MATERIALS AND ALLOYING The germanium used in this investigation was prepared by the Eagle-Picher Lead Co. from pure germanium oxide, by reduction in clay crucibles with sodium cyanide. The regulus is quite pure, assaying over 99.9 per cent Ge. High-purity gold obtained from Handy and Harmon was used. Alloying was carried out in graphite crucibles in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to 1050° to 1100°C., and the metal was allowed to freeze in the crucible. Prepared in this way, the gold dendrites in hypoeutectic alloys were somewhat segregated at the bottom and sides of the ingot, and on the hypereutectic side the lighter primary germanium tended to gather at the top. Most of the alloys were made from virgin metal. Low-germanium heats were made by alloying pure gold with the eutectic. Melting losses were consistently a few milligrams or less, and the composition could safely be taken from the intended analysis. The 30 per cent and 50 per cent germanium heats for thermal analysis were made in part from remelted higher germanium heats, and they may be off composition as much as one per cent. Because of the high cost of materials, the weight of heats for thermal analysis were 15 to 20 grams and heats for metallographic, X-ray, and hardness specimens were 2 to 4 grams.

Tensile creep experiments were conducted on high-purity, poly cvystalline rhenium from 1500" to 2300°C at stresses from 1500 to I0,OOO psi in a vacuum of 10-a torr. The apparent activation energy for creep was 60 kcal per mole, and the steady-state creep rate varied directly with stress to the 3.4 power. Dislocation substructure that developed during creep was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Possible rate-controlling deformation mechanisms are discussed. The creep behavior of most metals at elevated temperature can be represented by the following equation:&apos;&apos;&apos; t = Cf(s)(^)(s/E)nD [1] where i = steady-state creep rate, C = constant, f(s) = a function involving microstructure, s = applied stress, E = the average elastic modulus at test temperature, n = constant, D = diffusion coefficient According to this well-established relationship, metals with higher elastic moduli and lower diffusion coefficients should have greater creep resistance at the same stress and temperature and equivalent mi-crostructures. While no diffusion data are available, the diffusivity of rhenium should be less than that for most other refractory metals because of its high melting point and hcp crystal structure. The Sherby-Simnad relation for calculating atomic mobility in metallic systems3 predicts that the diffusion coefficient for rhenium is less than that experimentally determined for tungsten4 in the temperature region 1500. to 2200°C. At these temperatures the elastic modulus for tungsten5 is only slightly larger than the extrapolated modulus for rhenium.6 Thus, rhenium is a good possibility for a a high-temperature structural material, but few data on the creep of rhenium have been reported. This investigation was undertaken to study the high-tempera-ture deformation behavior of rhenium in detail. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The material used in this study was consolidated from high-purity powder. After cold pressing the powder to a plate a in. thick, the billet was sintered in hydrogen at 2250°C for 24 hr. The plate was reduced to 0.100 in. by cold cross rolling with intermediate anneals at 1650°C for 20 min between passes. The plate was further reduced to 0.060 in. by unidirectional cold rolling with similar heat treatments between passes, and then finally stress-relieved in hydrogen at 1650°C for 30 min. Specimens tested at 1900°C and below were pretest-annealed at 1900°C for 2 50 hr. Specimens tested above 1900°C were pretest-annealed at 2400°C for 5 hr. The impurity content in the "as-received" plate was quite low, table I. Essentially no change in impurity levels was detected in specimens after creep testing. All creep tests and annealing treatments were conducted in a vacuum of 10-8 torr in a test furnace heated by a tungsten mesh element. The load was applied to the specimens through a bellows, and stresses were maintained to ±1 pct of the selected value by periodic corrections for changes in specimen cross-sectional area during creep and for changes in the bellows spring force due to load column extension. One-inch-diameter tungsten force rods were used in the hot zone of the furnace. Deformation at temperature was measured by optically tracking gage marks on the specimen. Temperature was measured by a calibrated optical pyrometer and was determined to ±5"C. Grain sizes were determined by the linear intercept method and specimens were examined in the "as-polished" condition, using polarized light. Specimens annealed at 1900°C had a grain size of 52 ± 5µ , and those annealed at 2400°C had a grain size of 148 * 11 µ. Pieces were cut from the gage section of creep-tested specimens and planed to a thickness of about 0.010 in. by spark discharge machining. Thin foils for viewing by transmission electron microscopy were obtained by electropolishing in a solution of 6:3:1 ethyl alcohol, perchloric acid, and butoxy ethanol, respectively, using the window technique. Bath temperature was —4OoC, and the cell potential was 35 v. The foils were examined in Siemens Elmiskop I, operating at 100 kv. The unidirectional solidification of dendrites containing central twin planes was studied in A1-Ti alloys. Once nucleated, the twinned dendrites are a Twore ejficient form for solute redistribution and therefore grow in preference to the normal columnar dendvites. Comparison of these twinned dendrites to adjacent colunmar dendrites by means of decanting experinzents and electron-probe rnicvoarmlysis indicates that these special dendrites grow with less undercooling than normal dendrites. These findings are further supported by the effect of forced convection on the dendrite morphologies. COMMERCIAL semicontinuous cast ingots of most aluminum alloys frequently exhibit large grains which appear to be composed of hundreds of parallel, continuous, thin lamellae. This structure has been termed "basaltic",&apos; "fiederkristall", or, commonly, "feathery grain". The lamellae are &apos;about 100 p thick, several inches long, and each lamella contains a central (111) coherent twin boundary. The feathery grain has been reported to have a (112) direction2 and a (110) direction4 in the twin plane parallel to the casting direction, in contrast with the usual columnar structure where a (100) direction predominates. Aust et uZ.~ proposed that the twin boundaries were growth twins nucleated by stacking faults on the octahedral planes. chalmers6 has suggested that feathery grain may grow by a re-entrant edge mechanism, as proposed by wagner7 for twinned dendritic growth in germanium. Cahn et ~1.~ have concluded that the occurrence of feathery grain is evidence of some form of lateral layer growth rather than the atomically continuous growth normally observed in metals. The postulates by Chalmers and Cahn would seem to be contradicted by the work of Nakao~"&apos; who showed that feathery grain only occurs when growth rates are high and the aluminum contains some solute. Specifically, Nakao found that in order to obtain feathery grain, in small castings solidified unidirec-tionally upward, the rate of growth must be above 2.4 cm per min and a critical solute concentration must be present. Below this solute concentration the grain structure was totally columnar. The critical solute concentration was found to be approximately: 0.04 wt pct Ti, 2 wt pct Cu or Mg, and 8 wt pct Zn. As pointed out by Chalmers it is not obvious why a twin-plane re-entrant edge mechanism would occur in aluminum which is thought to have a diffuse solid-liquid interface. The present experiments were undertaken to determine the growth mechanisms in- volved and to study the solute segregation in more detail. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys ranging in composition from 0.05 to 0.23 wt pct Ti* were prepared from 99.9 pct pure Ti and 99.993 pct pure Al. Two-hundred-gram samples of A1-Ti binary alloys were solidified unidirectionally and vertically upward from a water-cooled copper base, in a heated insulated mold. The 1-in.-diam, 6-in.-length mold was made of Marinite (manufactured by Johns-Manville Co.). The mold was attached to a 24-in. pivoted arm such that by dropping a weight the mold was rotated 180 deg, throwing the liquid metal from the solid. In this way, the solid-liquid interface was revealed by decanting. A sketch of the decanting mold is shown in Fig. 1. The alloy was poured into the mold at temperatures ranging from 680" to 750°C, partially solidified by water cooling from the base, and decanted after a measured time interval. Growth rates for each metal-pouring temperature were calculated from solidification-time vs length solidified curves. Temperature gradients in the melt were measured using four No. 34 gage thermocouples which protruded into the mold cavity. Grain orientations were determined by X-ray diffraction using Laue back-reflection techniques. Grain substructures were examined metallographically, using polarized light, by applying a thin epitaxial anodic film to polished sections after the method of Hone and pearson." Titanium micro segregation was measured by electron-probe microanalysis using a NORELCO AMR/~ with a mica crystal and proportional-flow counter. The petroleum industry is not peculiar in that it has a problem of stabilization. Economic conditions, not only in the United States but throughout the entire world, are unstable. However, the petroleum industry together with coal mining and agriculture has experienced a longer period of depression than most of the others. It is significant to note that industries engaged in the production of basic raw materials, the primary industries, have not enjoyed as much prosperity since the war as the secondary industries, or those engaged in the fabricating of raw materials and their distribution. The problems of the primary industries are not all the same. Overproduction has existed for several years in agriculture but its causes are not the same as those that have brought about overproduction in the petroleum industry. Unlike agriculture, the institution of property rights and the migratory nature of oil are responsible for the oil man&apos;s troubles. Our laws permit the owner of the oil and gas rights, with certain exceptions, to drill when and where he pleases. Since oil is migratory, the adjacent property owner must go and do likewise—drill. This condition spread over a wide area soon brings to the surface more petroleum than can be readily absorbed by the market, creating a condition of overproduction. It is significant to note at this place that when overproduction occurs the complete units in the industry suffer least. A complete unit is taken here to mean a corporation engaged in all the phases of the industry through production, transportation, refining and marketing. In the present depression the complete units in the industry are not in as bad financial condition as those engaged in single phases of the industry. The same thing can be said of the zinc industry, the lumber industry, and the other industries where there are organizations engaged in all the steps through the production of raw materials to the marketing of the finished product. The reason for this is that the complete units are in better position to coordinate all the factors that would work for a stabilized condition than are the units that are engaged in a single branch of the industry.

The time is no longer when a man can act as an independent unit; the appreciation of the interdependence of one man upon another has emphasized the importance of the social unit. Epidemics have made us recognize that even a man&apos;s health is not distinctly his own to control as he pleases. The physical examination of workmen previous to employment started with an effort to prevent the spread of tuberculosis, for tuberculosis may be detected in its early stages and cured. But it was soon found that many other diseases were detected and the saving of lives made possible. The physical examination does not mean the elimination of the unfit—on that basis it would utterly fail—but rather the measuring of a man&apos;s physical fitness and placing the man where he can do the best for himself, his fellow worker, and the company. Industry as a whole cannot expect to live up to the standard of physical examination set for the army, nor should it expect to do so, for in all branches of industry there are types of work that do not require the same amount of endurance as does army work, and the lacing of men with physical limitations in the work for which they are capable permits a higher average of physical fitness for the work requiring physical excellence. Objects of Physical Examination The objects of physical examination are: The early detection of illness, particularly at a time when a full restoration of health is possible; the protection of employees from infection caused by working in contact with contagious diseases; the discovery of a man&apos;s physical limitations, in so far as his possibility for rendering good service is concerned; assistance to the safety movement by eliminating association in hazardous occupations with men whose physical condition renders them likely to accident to themselves and others; and the lessening of time lost by sickness. Statistics issued by the United States Department of Labor show that 22.54 per cent. of idleness is caused by sickness, with an average number of 7.71 weeks idle; whereas only 1.66 per cent. is caused by acci-

ANY information that will increase the accuracy of our knowledge of the conditions prevailing in petroleum reservoirs should be of direct value in the determination of the proper operating technique as well as in the estimation of reserves and of ultimate production. The obvious method of obtaining this information is by studying a sample of the reservoir rock and its contents. In any such study, the problem of primary importance and maximum difficulty is that of getting the core to the surface in such a manner that its original fluid content is undis-turbed, which has so far proved to be an impossible task. Though it might be rash to say this will never be done, it is certainly safe to assume that a method for the recovery of a core at the surface in its undisturbed original state may not be developed in the immediate future, and certainly will not be forthcoming without a great deal of costly experimentation. Therefore any information that may be obtained that will help to correlate the state of a core (its fluid saturation) at the surface with its condition at the time it was drilled should be of value to the petroleum industry. The experiments described in this paper were undertaken with the purpose of determining, if possible, any relationship that might exist between the saturation of a core at the surface and its original fluid content. No consideration has been given to the question of contamina-tion by penetration of drilling water, since this problem has been exten-sively studied by other investigators. 1-3 Furthermore, it was regarded as being outside the scope of the present experiments, which were con-cerned only with the effect of pressure reduction upon the liquid content of cores. In an experimental study of this sort involving a large number of variables, accurate control of all factors is very important. The essen-tial and obvious procedure is to vary systematically one factor or condi-tion while keeping all the others constant, which necessarily involves a rather protracted and sometimes tedious experimental program.

The paper of Reno H. Sales on Ore Deposits at Butte, Mont.,&apos; is a careful and painstaking work, an important contribution to the literature of the subject. As is almost inevitable in a work of such magnitude, a few misstatements occur; and some of these I shall endeavor to point out. Mr. Sales has also fallen into error, as I think, in the application of his theory of ore deposition; and while the modification which I venture to suggest is a minor one geologically, it is of great economic importance. I refer to Mr. Sales&apos;s idea of an outward migration of mineralizing solutions from a supposed central copper zone. In order that I may make myself plain, I must first epitomize the theory as a whole, which I understand to be this: All of the Butte ore deposits (save those along the Continental fault, not herein considered) are derived from solutions of magmatic origin, which, at the beginning of their ascent from a great depth, were acid in reaction, hot, and were carriers of copper, zinc, manganese and other metals. As they departed from their point of origin they lost heat, and, because of reactions with the wall rock, became more and more alkaline. The metal deposited from these solutions in their hot condition was principally copper; and, as they cooled, they deposited less and less copper and more and more manganese and zinc, until the copper practically disappeared. With this theory in general I have no fault to find, nor have I, it must be stated, the qualifications necessary to enable me to pass upon it critically; but it seems to me to be reasonable and probable, and is one which I am quite willing to accept. But Mr. Sales, for what seem to me to be insufficient reasons, has assumed that there is one deep central source of copper, relatively rich and small, from which all the solutions emanated. From this central source the solutions rose, through one channel or through a group of channels, to the surface, at and within a small area called the central copper zone,

TWINNING has long been recognized as a possible mode of deformation in crystalline solids and has been studied in a wide variety of crystals.&apos; Recently, deformation markings which have the topographical characteristics of twins have been seen in tungsten" and the body-centered cubic alloys of tungsten and molybdenum with rhenium.3-7 These markings have been identified as twins because: 1) they are visible after polishing and etching;2,3 2) their formation is accompanied by an audible click and a drop in load;4 and 3) the habit plane is {112}, the plane which has been identified as the twinning plane for several body-centered cubic metals.&apos; However, there has been no published evidence for the specific determination of the twinning direction in rhenium alloys of tungsten and molybdenum, because usually the deformation twins were not broad enough to be detected with a conventional X-ray beam. Consequently, [111] is inferred as the twinning direction since the latter must lie in a plane of symmetry perpendicular to the twinning plane (112). As Sims and Jaffee3 and Lawley and Maddin4 have shown, the addition of rhenium to molybdenum and tungsten increases the ductility of the alloy over that of the pure metal, but twinning is much more profuse in these alloys than in the pure elements, particularly at Mo-35 pct Re*and W-30 pct Re. Since twinning is often associated with brittle fracture in iron8 and the silicon-irons,9 direct experimental proof that the deformation markings in tungsten and molybdenum alloys of rhenium are twins seemed to be needed. Using the Laue back-reflection technique, the deformation markings in a Mo-35 pct Re alloy are shown to be deformation twins. The twins have a (112) habit plane and the twinning direction is <111>. The Mo-35 pct Re specimen used was taken from a 0.060-in. zone-refined single crystal deformed 6 pct in tension at 78°K. The Laue back-reflection technique, with a film to specimen distance of 2 cm, and white radiation from a copper target were used.

Deformation (a) and twin (a&apos;) stacking-fault densities in cold - wor ked filings of fcc silver alloys containing 2, 4, and 6 wt pct Sb have been estimated from Debye-Scherrer peak shifts and asymmetries, respectively. Evidence has been obtained for a possible strain-induced transformation in a two-phase alloy containing 9.0 zut pct Sb. Using Fourier analysis of X-ray line profiles, the effective particle sizes and root mean square strains have been determined for the three fcc alloys in the cold-worked condition. The values of the compound fault probability 0.5a + a&apos;) evaluated from peak shifts and asymmetries are in reasonable apeement with those derived from peak broadening. COLD work of fcc metals may produce both deformation and twin (also called growth) stacking faults, which can be detected and quantitatively estimated by X-ray diffraction techniques.&apos; In addition to peak broadening, deformation faults produce a shift in peak positions and twin faults an asymmetry of the Debye-Scherrer reflections. Besides stacking faults, a reduction in the size of coherently diffracting domains and distortion within these also broaden the powder reflections of deformed fcc metals and alloys. Fourier analysis&apos; of peak shapes provides quantitative infor- mation about the effective domain sizes, lattice strains, and also the compound fault probability (1.5a + a&apos;), where a and a&apos; represent deformation-and growth-fault density, respectively. The Paterson method2 for determination of a from peak shifts, the warren3 or wagner4 method for evaluation of a&apos; from peak asymmetries, and the Fourier analysis for quantitative estimates of all the contributory causes of peak broadening have, in the course of the last decade, been extensively applied to obtain data for a number of deformed fcc metals and alloys. One of the useful results of earlier measurements of a in several solid solutions is a correlation between a and the solute valence as well as electron concentration per atom (p) in alloy systems based on a particular solvent. The work of Smallman and westmacott5 on Cu-Zn, Cu-A1, and Cu-Sn, of Foley, Cahn, and ~aynor&apos; on Cu-Si and Cu-Ge, and of Rama Rao and Anantharaman7 on Cu-Si and Cu-Sb has revealed a common trend in the increase of a with p and also a with valency of the solute. Cahn and Davies&apos; and Ad-ler and wagnerg have observed similar trends for silver alloys containing cadmium, indium, and tin. Data on a for silver alloys with a pentavalent solute element are not, however, available. It is primarily to fill this need that the present investigation on Ag-Sb alloys was undertaken. Utilizing the Patersonand Warren methods, values of a and a&apos;, respectively, have been determined in three silver alloys containing 2, 4, and 6 wt pct Sb. By Fourier analysis of the broadening of Debye-Scherrer peaks, effective particle sizes, lattice strains, and the compound fault probability (1.5a +a&apos;) have also been evaluated.

The electromagnetic levitation technique has been successfully applied to rate studies of the de-carburization of liquid Fe-C alloys from 5.5 to zero pct C at 1660°C using gas mixtures containing 1 to 100 pct CO2 with CO or helium as diluents. The rate was shown to be independent of carbon concen -tration in the melt and only slightly affected by total pressure. The results were shown to be consistent with control either wholly or predominantly by gaseous diffusion. As well as avoiding side reactions with the crucible, levitation allowed precise calculation of reaction rates since the geometry of the system was accurately known. It also enabled interpretation using the established mass-transfer correlations for a gas flowing past a single sphere, The existence of gaseous-diffusion control and the extremely high rates of reaction reported for gas flowing past small spheres are of great practical significance in relation to current investigations into the use of spray-refining techniques in continzcous steelmaking. PREVIOUS work on the kinetics of carbon removal from liquid iron has generally involved the use of oxygen as the gaseous oxidant. Investigations have been made on commercial steelmaking furnaces and in addition laboratory-scale experiments have been attempted with a slag phase present. The general lack of agreement and the obvious difficulty in interpreting the results is at least partly due to the complexity of the systems used. This work has been reviewed by carter1 and more recently by Bods-worth2 and ward.3 The gas-liquid metal reactions have also been studied with slag-free melts by the conventional technique of blowing oxygen onto the melt contained in a crucible. The reaction between the oxidant and carbon could be followed by sampling either the melt or the gas phase. Side reactions with the crucible material have precluded direct interpretation of the results. Fujii, 5-7 using O-A mixtures, attempted to correct for the crucible reaction and reported that the reaction between carban and oxygen occurred at the melt surface and was controlled by gaseous diffusion for carbon contents greater than a critical value and by carbon-diffusion control in the metal for carbon contents less than the critical. The critical value was given as approximately 0.15 pct C. However, whereas this was the case for oxygen contents in the gas stream up to 10 pct, between 10 and 20 pct the rate was found to be approximately independent of oxygen content, and Fujii attempted to explain this observation by postulating the presence of an oxide "film".7 Turkdogan et a1.&apos; have studied iron fuming during decarburizing and suggested gaseous-diffusion control of the reaction above a critical carbon concentration, given as approximately 2 pct C. Filippov9-12 reports in a similar manner to Fujii but makes no mention of the crucible reaction with the carbon in the melt, even though this would be expected with the temperature, crucible material (MgO), and carbon contents used. Both CO2 and O2 were used as oxidant gases. In the present work the decarburization of liquid Fe-C alloys was studied using an adaptation of the electromagnetic levitation technique, and thus the complexities introduced by crucible side reactions were eliminated. In this technique a single sphere of the Fe-C alloy is freely suspended and heated by electromagnetic induction in a flowing stream containing the oxidant gas. The full range of carbon levels up to saturation was studied, the temperature of the melts in this instance being held constant at 1660°C. The oxidant was CO2 which was used either pure or in association with a diluent gas, the total gas pressure being maintained either at 1 atm or at a reduced pressure. IT is not the object of the present paper to give a description of the minerals found on Mine Hill, in Sussex County, N. J., nor even to touch upon all the forms of the ores named, but to place upon record and call to the attention of the Institute some interesting facts concerning them. In May, 1875, after the Dover meeting, some of the members visited this locality, and, no doubt, it is fresh in their memories, being one of the best known mineralogical points in our country. It will be only necessary to describe it very briefly. Mine Hill and Stirling Hill, in Sussex County, N. J., the former being at the village of Franklin Furnace, and the latter near Ogdensburg,-are the only localities in the State where zinc ores are found in workable quantities.* Mine Hill is the more northerly, and mineralogically differs from its neighbor, chiefly in having no hydrated ores to speak of, while at Stirling this deposit is considerable. At both points Franklinite, red oxide, and silicate of zinc occur in large quantities. Mine Hill lies on the east side of the Wallkill River, above which it rises to an extreme elevation of about 150 feet. On the summit the outcrop of the Franklinite vein appears, while the lowest worked points are perhaps 10 or 15 feet above the level of the stream. Corn¬mencing at the northern end, where the Hamburg Road crosses it, this outcrop runs along the northwestern brow of the hill a distance of about 2000 feet, in a general southwest direction, to a point where is a large, cavern-like opening, called the "Southwest Opening." " Double Rock," about the highest point on the hill, lies near the middle of this 2000 feet of outcrop, and over or near it passes a property line, to which allusion will hereafter be made. At the Southwest Opening the vein bends abruptly towards the east,-the angle between the two parts being perhaps 45°,-and this easterly branch continues some 700 feet. A lack of experimental data illustrating the effect of composition, particularly in respect to impurities, on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum-alloy die castings induced the authors and their associates to undertake a limited study of these relations. A number of commercial alloys and several experimental variations of a commercial alloy were used for the investigation. Mechanical property, growth, steam, paraffin, salt spray and atmospheric exposure tests were employed. This paper deals with the more accelerated tests and the results they have produced. It is concluded that a high-silicon alloy with all impurities except iron strictly limited to small amounts will develop an excellent resistance to corrosion and retain satisfactory mechanical properties and casting characteristics. As a direct result of this investigation an alloy of this character with superior corrosion resistance is now available commercially. In general, copper increases the strength and decreases the elongation and corrosion resistance. Tin reduces the mechanical properties and the resistance to corrosion. Iron reduces the elongation and, if excessively high, may adversely affect the tensile strength. Even excessively high iron contents do not affect the corrosion resistance, which is fortunate for the die caster as it is this element that is the most difficult to control. Nickel and zinc in limited amounts do not seem to affect the properties or corrosion resistance of at least the high-silicon alloy. Growth tests have confirmed the previous common belief that dimensional changes under either dry or wet conditions at 100" C. are too small to be of practical importance. THE ever increasing array of information concerning the measurement of the effect of the welding process on the properties of a steel is an indication of the tremendous effort that is being expended in this field. The methods that have been considered may be divided into two groups: first, those that measure directly the effect of welding on the ductility of a steel, and, second, those that observe the change in some property, such as the hardness of the heat-affected zone, and assume a direct correlation between this change and the resultant ductility. The nick-bend test is a direct method designed for studying the effect of welding on the ductility of a steel. The test specimen (Fig. I) consists of a bar cut from a plate with a bead weld on the surface. The specimen is prepared with a saw-notch placed so as to restrict deformation to the heat-affected zone under the bead weld when tested as a static bend. Failure is caused by rupture of the low-ductility metal in the heat-affected zone. The angle at maximum load is used as an index of the effect of the welding process on the material. In the development of the nick-bend test considerable scatter was noted in some of the results, although the agreement of duplicate specimens welded at the same time and tested consecutively was excellent. Upon further investigation it was found that the change in ductility was dependent upon the interval of time between the welding operation and the testing of the specimen. For the six steels of Fig. a, the angle at maximum load in four cases was doubled and in one case was tripled. All steels that have been studied show an improvement in the angle of bend for longer intervals between welding and testing. Up to 1909 the American public had little knowledge of, or interest in, potash. Some remembered that it had to do with soft soap and sore throat,, but further they knew not. In 1909-10, the German-American potash war, and the publicity attending hostilities, brought home to America the knowledge that potash was an important article of commerce; that Germany monopolized its production and distribution, and exercised all the prerogatives attending complete control. The present war, with its transportation embargo, has again directed attention to Germany&apos;s strength as a potash producer and her present unfortunate situation as a distributor. As a consequence, the search for potash takes on new life and it again becomes a subject of general interest. My first knowledge of potash came from a study of the German potash exhibit at the World&apos;s Fair in 1893. This investigation led to the recommendation that Armour & Co. engage in the manufacture of commercial fertilizers and the fertilizer branch was organized early in 1894. From then to now " potash " has been a live subject. Two and eight-tenths per cent. of the earth&apos;s crust consists of potassium oxide. It is an important constituent of feldspar, granite, and other igneous rocks. Potash is valuable commercially in a water-soluble form. In igneous rocks it is locked in so tight that it is of little value and no utilization in a commercial way has been made of these insoluble forms. Potash in water-soluble form is found in large deposits in Germany; in smaller deposits in Austria and Spain; and in brines in some of our Western arid basins. The deposits in Germany, Austria, and Spain are concentrations from sea waters containing potash derived from the decomposition of potash-bearing rocks. It has been found that the amount of potash remaining in decomposed rocks is not the same as that in the original rock. The writers have no new system and no new principle of taxation to propose. The general subject of taxation is as old as governments are and as familiar to taxpaying Americans as the general thesis on the inalienable rights of man. We believe, therefore, following the committee of the National Tax Association, that improvement in the general conditions of taxation, including mine taxation, maybe brought about mainly through a better adjustment of known and tried principles and methods of taxing to modern complex forms of property and income, and that not much is to be expected from abandonment of experience for new ways and means, methods and principles, should anything new be discovered, which in our opinion is very doubtful. The committee referred to has constructed the general framework of its Model System of State and Local Taxation1 on familiar forms of taxing, by eliminating some that &apos; have proved bad, suggesting improvements in others, and adopting the best, leaving plenty of room for the accommodation of the general plan to the varying conditions of taxation in the several states. Unfortunately, the taxation of mines is dismissed by the committee with the statement that the subject has been reassigned for further investigation and report by a special sub-committee, frankly recognizing that the peculiar difficulties of this phase of the subject require special study and investigation. Much may be hoped for from the labor of this sub-committee if the problem is approached from the viewpoint of recommendations already published. In this paper, the writers state their opinion on some of the broader aspects of mine taxation with too little attention to the grounds on which they rest. Contrary to inclination space requirements compel them to resort to summary statements without adequate discussion for a satisfactory presentation of the whole subject. All they can do is to qualify the witnesses and record the testimony. In any discussion of this very large subject we are confronted at the outset with so many obstacles that at best only a fragmentary and rather disconnected presentation can be made of it, and my hope is that building from the few facts I have to offer a more complete knowledge may be secured. In the whole intermountain and Pacific Coast region, west of Pueblo, Col., and from Canada to Mexico, there is no production of pig iron, and steel production is confined to the manufacture of a small amount of open-hearth steel from scrap. When we consider the area, the resources, and the several centers of population, this condition seems anomalous, even in the face of every counter argument as to cheap water transportation, or other means of transport from the Atlantic Seaboard or from the iron and steel centers of the Middle West. This comatose condition, if such a term may be applied, is certainly not due to a lack of all the essential materials and factors for success in iron and steel smelting, but is rather, I think, due largely to the general fact that it is only within a comparatively few years that the centers of population on the Pacific Coast have attained a size that would entitle them to the position of distributing or freight centers, or that the "back country" has been enough built up to make it sufficiently interesting to the railroads to foster trade from the local centers to the interior points rather than seek to supply such local centers and the interior by a transcontinental haul. "Ore Supply Edwin C. Eckel, in his monumental work on Iron Ores, has but little to say concerning the Pacific Coast deposits. He mentions (p. 269) those of Minaret, Madera County, and the Eagle Mountains, Riverside County, Cal., "perhaps 50 to 100 million tons each;" the deposits in Shasta County, worked for the electric furnace on Pitt River; and

THE two chemical compounds, natural sodium carbonate and sodium sulphate, in their anhydrous condition are dealt in as "soda ash and "salt cake”-names from an earlier day that are not as precise as the present accepted terminology. Once a large part of the sodium carbonate recovered was in the ash of seaweed, so it was logically called soda ash, and the corresponding potassium carbonate, once mainly recovered from wood ashes, was called potash. The term "salt cake" was applied to the sodium sulphate resulting from interaction of sodium chloride with sulphuric acid or sodium bisulphate, to form hydrogen chloride gas and an anhydrous cake of sodium sulphate. It was called "salt cake" and also "glassmaker&apos;s salt cake" because much of it was used in the production of glass. The two salts occur in nature in a variety of forms, but whereas an- hydrous sodium sulphate (thenardite) is fairly common, the anhydrous normal sodium carbonate, Na2CO3, is almost never found in nature. The monohydrate (thermonatrite), Na2CO3.2H2O, is seen occasionally, but it is never a major constituent in natural "soda" deposits. The high solubility of normal sodium carbonate is one reason for this. While both compounds occur widely in brines, the solid salts found in nature are usually trona (Na2CO3.NaHC03.2H2O) and thenardite (Na2SO4). The natural brines containing workable quantities of the two sodium salts are largely found in the arid and semiarid portions of the western United States and other countries. The classical discussion of the resources of these brines are those of Clarke,5 Chatard.4 Packard,19 Gale,11 and Wells.28 From North Dakota to California and from Arizona to the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Manitoba, saline lakes, dried-up lakes, playas, and similar land-locked depressions contain accumulations of saline matter. DOCTOR Albert Sauveur, distinguished scientist and Honorary Mem-ber of this Institute, predicted in the first Howe Memorial Lecture that the privilege of delivering this annual address would be considered a highly significant honor. The intervening years have well borne out Sauveur&apos;s prophecy. I wish to assure the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers that I also deeply appreciate this honor, recognizing at the same time the present and even more the future respon-sibilities with which it is accompanied. Several of the previous lecturers had the good fortune to attend the classes of Professor Howe and to work in his laboratories. I was similarly favored, although in my instance and to my great regret the period was all too short. However, Howe&apos;s book, published in 1903, "Iron, Steel and Other Alloys," afforded me abundant opportunity to continue these studies. How well I remember the inspiration I derived from this famous book by Howe, the metallurgical master, pioneer, and educator! Remembering that Professor Howe contributed numerous papers to The Metallographist, a magazine supported from a technical point of view by the world&apos;s pioneers in metallography, I was curious a few days ago to learn the nature of Howe&apos;s early contributions to this magazine. The first paper by Howe in the first year of The Metallographist (1898) dealt with the allotropic theory; the second also treated of allotropy, and I quote the first sentence. of that paper: The allotropic theory of the hardening of steel may, like so many other important theories, have to be accepted or rejected not on direct proof or disproof, but on the accumulation of circumstantial evidence for or against it.
