THE four papers making up this symposum have been prepared espe-cially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathe-matical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismo-graph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as much as possible of the technical aspects of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. Using a tool and using its product are two different things. One does not use an automatic screw-threading machine when he buys a box of screws at the hardware store. Neither does the geologist

The primary purpose of the Institute is to advance the technologic and engineering arts embraced by it through interchange of knowledge. This can best be clone by the presentation and discussion of technical papers by its members. Short practical papers are especially welcome. An author should always satisfy himself that his material is of a quality that will he a credit to him and to the Institute. The preparation of a good paper frequently leads to a reorientation of the author's thoughts, and publication contributes much to the professional standing of the author. Members are urged to submit papers presenting the results of their work. Attention to the following suggestions will greatly further the prompt and efficient handling of manuscripts. 1. SUBJECTS: The subject must be within the field of the Institute. Original work, the results of field, plant, laboratory or theoretical investigations, new views on old but important problems and occasionally reviews of timely and important subjects of wide interest to our members may constitute the basis of a paper. The mere fact that the work is original does not necessarily justify publication: it must be of a substantial nature, of value to a reasonable number of our members and worthy of permanent record. It is seldom desirable to subdivide the results of a single research for publication in a variety of journals. Previous publication is usually a bar to acceptance. If any part of your paper has been published elsewhere and you regard repetition as absolutely necessary please so state in your covering letter. 2. CONSTRUCTION: Papers should be clearly and concisely written in good English. Care in this regard ensures wider reading and the saving in space permits the Institute to publish more papers. It is the experience of the Papers and Publications Committee that most papers can he improved by condensation. "Readers" who are asked to recommend acceptance or nonacceptance put particular emphasis on the length of the paper and the elimination of unnecessary or any extraneous material. The terminology and units employed should be those current in the particular field. An examination of Institute publications will afford useful guidance in such matters. Webster's New International Dictionary, 1935 edition, is the Institute's authority for spelling and style. Various abbreviations are used habitually; for instance, lb., pound; bbl., barrel or barrels; ft., foot or feet; hr., hour or hours; in., inch or inches; Fig. 1 but Figs. 2 and 3.

AT the joint session of Blast Furnace and Open Hearth Committees, April 7, 1937, at Birmingham, the subject of the quality of basic open-hearth pig iron was so well presented and discussed from so many different viewpoints that it was the general opinion that progress had been made and that such meetings were conducive to the advancement of the art of making pig iron of the right quality for the open-hearth man to produce the most satisfactory quality of steel. It was agreed that there is a decided differentiation between the chemical analysis of pig iron and the "quality" of pig iron. Paul J. McKim said that open-hearth furnace operators frequently make reference to certain types of iron as "bad iron," "dirty iron," "cold metal," etc., claiming that when using these irons, although they are within specified chemical analysis, it is impossible to produce quality steel. Mr. McKim gave a list of the suggested causes of those "certain types" of bad irons that have a thoroughly respectable analysis but a thoroughly disreputable character. Another open-hearth man, P. A. MacIsaac, of Nova Scotia, said that The effects of iron that is below standard in analysis or in that mysterious property called quality, are well known to all open-hearth operators. It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rejections of finished product run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blast furnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth man. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this "mysterious property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him. The (001) fiber-texture component, found in aluminum rods extruded at subzero temperatures, consists of particles of various sizes having extremely irregular shapes dispersed in a nonuniform way throughout a matrix of the (111) orientation. Apparently the (001) texture component is not a result of recrystallization but rather is due to the presence of reimanents of the original grains which fragmented from the main body of material as it reoriented towards the (111) orientation during the extrusion process. Both X-ray line-broadening measurements and electron-microscopic observatwns indicate that, after extrusion, regions having (001) orientations are in a state of relatively less strain and distortion than (111) regions, suggesting that the former have undergone less plastic deformation. A (001) fiber-texture component is also found after complete recrystallization of extruded specimens. Approximately one third of the recrys-stallized volume has this orientation. The (001) fragments, formed during the extrusion process, act as nuclei for recrystallization; i.e., the pain boundaries separating these fragments from the matrix are capable of migrating during annealing. Electron-transmission microscopic observations and X-ray line-broadening measurements indicate that (001) regions recover at a much more rapid rate than (111) regions at annealing temperatures up to 187°C. DURING the extrusion of a rod or the drawing of a wire the individual grains comprising the piece tend to reorient towards a preferred orientation (texture) which is of the fiber type where a particular crys-tallographic direction, (uvw), in each crystallite tends to be aligned parallel to the longitudinal axis

Campbell,' in 1896 said: "The Birmingham district in Alabama has certain great advantages for there are few places in the world where fuel and ore are so near together, although, unfortunately, both are of inferior quality; the ore being low in iron and high in phosphorus and the coal giving a weak and impure coke." This statement could not have been questioned in 1894, but by 1896 several Robinson-Ramsay washers had been put into operation and weak and impure coke was a thing of the past. The Warrior coal field of Alabama contains six seams that yield coking coal of excellent quality. In descending order, they are Brookwood, Milldale, Pratt, America, Mary Lee, and Black Creek. In each of these, however, bands of rock and bone coal of varying thickness are stratified with the coal; and while some of these impurities can be separated from the coal by the miner, much of it must be loaded out with the coal. Consequently, unless the coal is washed before being coked, it will yield a coke of varying ash and sulfur content quite unsatisfactory for blastfurnace use. At present, the Gulf States Steel Co. is producing run-of-mine coal at its Virginia mine, from the America seam, that is uniformly low enough in ash to permit of coking without washing, but this is the only exception to the above statement. Alabama was the first state to experiment seriously with coal washers, was the first to install washers on a large scale and, up to the present, has maintained the lead. The Alabama State Mine Inspector reports that during 1923 20,919,303 tons of bituminous coal was mined in Alabama; 12,858,499 tons of which was delivered to coal washers for treatment.

The year 1937 brought to south Arkansas increased drilling activity and production. Oil production amounted to 12,159,440 bbl., an increase of 1,504,500 bbl., or 14.1 per cent over 1936. This was the largest production since 1931, and the first annual increase since 1925, when the deeper sands at Smackover were developed. There were 177 wells completed during the year, with 103 oil wells, 6 gas wells, and 68 dry holes, an increase of more than 100 per cent over 1936. Of the 56 wildcat wells drilled, 52 were dry and 4 produced oil. Two new fields, one important extension and three minor extensions were discovered. The trend toward deeper drilling is shown by the fact that 97 wells were more than 5000 ft. deep, including 80 over 6000 ft. and 13 over 7000 ft., although the depth record of 7973 ft., made in 1935, was not exceeded. Geological Section Deeper and more extensive drilling during the past few years, not only in south Arkansas but also in adjacent parts of north Louisiana and east Texas, has furnished much important geological information and has brought out some very unexpected facts in regard to structural and depositional conditions in the series of formations laid down in the interval between the end of the Pennsylvanian and early Cretaceous time. It is now evident that an important basin of salt deposition existed in the Arkansas-Louisiana-Texas area, but it is still an open question whether this salt basin was contemporaneous and continuous with the even larger Gulf Coast salt basin extending from Mississippi to Mexico. The accompanying columnar section (Fig. 1) shows the producing zones and names that have been applied to the several subsurface formations, most of which have no outcrop equivalents. This is for the convenience of readers unfamiliar with recent developments, but the correlations and nomenclature cannot yet be considered final. These formations will be discussed in more detail in various papers to be published in the near future.

THE basic material for testing aluminum, copper and zinc is a cast metal, principally in the form of wire bars (Figs. 1 to 3) and plates for the produc- tion of sheets or strips, (Figs. 4 to 7). Experience has proved that the chemical and crystallographic proper-ties of such cast metal exercise a certain influence when it is being worked, which is usually done while the metal is hot. In a chemical sense the slight impurities, which even the purest industrial metal contains, have a disturbing effect. They settle either along the outside limits of granulation, as in the case of aluminum and copper, or else in the interior of the crystal, as in the case of zinc; but frequently are also found accumulating at certain points (formation of the blowholes and skin) (Fig. 7). The crystallographic character of the metals is either that of uniformly fine granulation, or else there occurs a certain distinct casting texture marked by sharply defined cooling conditions and consisting of crys-tals of a pronounced stalk-like or blade form. Since we generally distinguish between a crystal texture and a crystal structure, the term crystal texture is used here for the arrangement of the crystals relative to each other and their microscopic composition; crystallic structure is used to mean the radioscopically ascertain-able structure of the crystal. The influence of the impurities and of the crystalline character on the working of the metals has been fre-quently pointed out in practice as well as in science.

A considerable quantity of experimental data is available on the effect of time, temperature, work-hardening and composition on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys. There is, however, little unity of purpose or generality in most of the studies and, because the number of variables is large, the results often are not applicable to the problems that arise in practice. Furthermore, the customary expression of the effect of different variables as separate curves or as three-dimensional diagrams with time, temperature and the dependent variables as coordinates, renders the task of selecting the optimum time and temperature of precipitation treatment, with respect to their simultaneous but unequal etfect on the various properties, exceedingly difficult. The introduction of precipitation treatments to raise the yield strength of 24s-type alloys has created a need for a method of correlating and summarizing the effect of time and temperature on the mechanical properties and susceptibility to inter-crystalline corrosion. Correlation is particularly desirable because the choice of time and temperature is of necessity a compromise to achieve the best possible combination of properties, and the optimum conditions cannot he accurately specified unless the data are in a form in which the alternatives can be readily compared. Therefore, the work described here was undertaken to find a common relationship that would be capable of expressing the effect of precipitation time and temperature on the various properties and by means of which the relative effects could be correlated and their interpretation facilitated. Review of Previous Work In connection with an investigation of the interrelation of age-hardening and creep performance of nickel-silicon-copper alloys, Jenkins and Bucknalll demonstrated that the time required to attain maximum hardness and tensile strength could be expressed by a relationship of the form: t = K • io"^ (i) where t is the time in hours and T the temperature of aging, expressed in degrees absolute, and m and K are constants. They also pointed out that this expression is analogous to that which describes the change of the diffusion coefficient D with temperature; namely, D = Ae-~/m (2) Later, Cohen used this relationship in studies of the mechanism of age-hardening of a silver.rich copper alloyZ and of duralumin.3

During the year 1934, Kentucky oil and gas operators have partly overcome their past depression fears and in the oil industry, with possibly more abandonments of old oil producers than the completion of new oil wells, produced 4,814,904 bbl. of oil in 1934 against 4,501,511 bbl. in 1933. In the gas industry of eastern Kentucky, 115 gas wells were completed during 1934. This production is delivered through two 20-in., one 16-in., one 12-in., one 10-in., and two 8-in. pipe lines to supply both domestic and industrial markets in Cincinnati, Ohio; Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort, Winchester, Ashland, Covington and other Kentucky towns; Washington, D.C., and other eastern cities. The largest percentage of these gas wells and production are from the Devonian black shale area of Floyd, Pike, Knott, Martin and Magoffin counties, Kentucky. In this area the largest percentage of 1889 wells, developing 421,-215 acres, has been completed in the past 10 years, of which 55.3 per cent produce from the 400 to 550 ft. of Carbonaceous Devonian black shales. The successful results obtained from these Devonian shales are due to the physical effects of the 5000 to 6000 lb. of gelatinated nitroglycerin with which the entire 400 to 550 ft. of shale is shot. A very small number of the shale wells are natural producers and do not require shooting. Other than the Devonian shale gas production, the remaining 44.5 per cent of the gas in this field is encountered throughout the entire strati-graphic section above this horizon; namely, salt sands of Pennsylvanian age and Maxon, Big Lime and Weir of Mississippian Age. A very small percentage is encountered in the Corniferous Devonian lime and the Silurian Big 6 below the black shales. In western Kentucky, in the counties of Henderson, Webster, Hopkins, McLean, Christian, Muhlenburg, Ohio, Daviess, Hancock, Brecken-ridge, Hart, Barren and Warren, many gas wells have been completed, but, because of insufficient market, activity has been somewhat desultory. The area is served by the pipe lilies of the Kentucky Natural Gas Corporation, with headquarters at Owensboro. In making a glass model of mine-workings, each mine will present some little individualities, to meet which will call for the exercise of special ingenuity. Having made several models, I offer the following details of the model of the Montana-Tonopah mine-workings, believing that with small changes for different conditions the method described can be successfully used in making a glass model of the workings of any mine. The model, Fig. 1, has the top, one end, and the front removed. The case is made of kiln-dried pine, painted with several coats of dead-white paint. It is made to take sheets of glass 24 by 42 in. in size, and is 18 in. high, the workings shown being on a scale of 1 in. = 40 ft., or 4800 : 1 scale. The base is made of four pieces of 2-in. material, well pinned and glued together. The back, of material 1 in. thick, is secured rigidly to the base by screws and countersinking. The four posts, 1.5 in. square, are so cut that the front and two ends of the model fit in flush with the outside edges of the posts. The top rails, 1 in. square, are fastened rigidly to the front and back posts by means of small iron braces. The ends, front, and top of the case are of 0.5-in. material; the ends and front are held in place at the bottom by pegs fitting into the base ; at the top the ends are held by buttons and the front by cupboard-hooks on the inside. Hinged hasps on the cover, fitting over staples in the end-pieces, make it easy to lock the entire case. Before the back is fastened to the base, it is cut with horizontal and vertical grooves to receive the horizontal and vertical sheets of glass, shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The horizontal grooves, spaced to scale, represent the vertical distances between the levels at the shaft. The vertical grooves are placed wherever cross-sections of the workings are desired.

In 1827, chromite was discovered near Baltimore by Isaac Tyson, Jr., who initiated the mining of chrome ore an:! later (1845) .the manufacture of chromium compounds in this country. From 1828 to about 1860 the United States, supplanting Russia, supplied chromite for most of the world. Chrome deposits were found also in California, and the Tyson Company shipped ore to Philadelphia by way of Cape Horn. In 1848, J. Lawrence Smith, an American in the employ of the Porte, discovered large bodies of chromite in Asia Minor. They were developed in 1865 and became the chief source of the world's supply for a number of years. The discovery of the large high-grade bodies in New Caledonia, and later in Rhodesia, with other foreign sources, gives at present an abundant supply for all demands. For a number of years before the great war, the United States produced only a few hundred tons of chromite annually, for local use, but during the war the demand for domestic ore resulted in a production of more than 82,000 long tons of crude ore in 1918, and it was demonstrated that the United States has reserve deposits equal to a war demand of several years' duration. Now that the war is over, the country is conserving its domestic supplies by employing higher-grade but cheaper ore from foreign countries. The Umiat oil field is in Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 between the Brooks Range and Arctic Ocean in far-northern Alaska. The Umiat anticline has been tested by 11 wells, six of which produced oil ; however, [lie productive capacity and recoverable reserves of the field are subject to considerable speculation because of unusual reservoir conditions and because several wells appear to have been .seriously damaged during drilling and completion. Oil is produced at depths of 275 to 1,100 ft; the depth to the bottom of the permanently frozen zone varies from about 800 to 1,100 ft, .so that most of the oil reserves are in the permafrost Reservoir pressures are estimated to range from 50 to 350 psi, increasing with depth, and the small amount of gas dissolved in the oil is the major source of energy for production. Laboratory tests were made on cores under simulated permafrost conditions to estimate oil recoverable by solution-gas expansion from low saturation pressures. The cores were also tested for clay content and susceptibility to productivity impaiment by swelling clays and increased water. content if exposed to fresh water. The results indicate that oil can be produced fronz reservoir rocks in the permafrost and that substantial amounts of oil can be produced from depletion-drive reservoirs by a pre.s.r~lrr drop of as little as 100 psi below the saturation pressure. Freezing of formation water reduces oil productivity much more than that due to increased oil viscosity: Failure of we1ls drilled with rtuter-base mud to produce is attributed to freezing of water in the urea immediately surrounding the wellbore. Swelling clays apparently contributed very little to the plugging of the wells. INTRODUCTION Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 lies between the Brooks Range and the Arctic Ocean in northern Alaska. The Umiat oil field is located in the southeastern part of the Reserve and is about 180 miles southeast of Point Barrow (the only permanent settlement in the Reserve and the primary supply point for drilling of the wells at Umiat). Eleven wells were drilled for the U. S. Department of the Navy, Office of Naval Petroleum and Oil Shale Reserves, between 1944 and 1953 to test the oil and gas possibilities of the Umiat anticline. Six of these wells produced oil in varying quantities and the best one pumped about 400 B/D.' Estimates of recoverable oil range from 30 to 100 million bbl. The main oil-producing zones are two marine sandstone beds in the Grandstand formation of Cretaceous age: these are referred to as the upper and lower sands. Good oil shows were found throughout the sand settions in the first three wells drilled on the structure, but the highest rate of oil production obtained on any 01 the many tests was about 24 BOPD. These first wells were drilled with conventional rotary methods using water-base mud; later wells were drilled either with cablc tools using brine or rotary tools using oil or oil-base mud. These experiments were successful as is shown by comparing the oil production from Well No. 2 with that from No. 5. These two wells are only 200 ft apart and are located at about the same elevation on the structure. Well No. 2. drilled with a rotary rig using water-base mud, was abandoned as a dry hole after all formation tests were negative. Well No. 5. drilled with cable tools and reamed with a rotary using oil, pumped 400 BOPD which was the maximum capacity of the pump and less than the capacity of the well. These field results indicated that the producing sands were extremely "water sensitive" and it was assumed that the cause of this sensitivity was the presence of swelling clays in the sands. Because of the very unusual reservoir conditions and the difficulties encountered in completing oil wells in the permafrost. the Navy asked the U. S. Bureau of Mines to make laboratory studies under simulated permafrost conditions to assist them in estimating the production potential of the field and the recoverable reserves. These tests were designed to determine the cause of the plugging of wells in the permafrost and to test oil recovery from frozen sand by solution-gas expansion with the oil gas-saturated at very low pressures. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS AND PROCEDURES Samples Analyzed Core samples were analyzed that represent the lower sand in Umiat Well No. 7, the upper sand in No. 3. and both the upper and lower sands in No. 9. McKim said that open-hearth furnace operators frequently make reference to certain types of iron as "bad iron," "dirty iron," "cold metal," etc., claiming that when using these irons, although they are within specified chemical analysis, it is impossible to produce quality steel. Mr. McKim gave a list of the suggested causes of those "certain types" of bad irons that have a thoroughly respectable analysis but a thoroughly disreputable character. Another open-hearth man, P. A. MacIsaac, of Nova Scotia, said that: The effects of iron that is below standard in analysis or in that mysterious property called quality, are well known to all open-hearth operators. It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rcjections of finished product run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blastfurnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth man. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this "mysterious property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him. THE question of the proper valuation of mines of iron ore was suggested to me by the difficulties experienced in getting answers for the United States Census Office, while I was engaged in the work of collecting the statistics of mines in New Jersey and New York The answers to the questions relating to values of real estate of mine properties varied so greatly that it was necessary to revise them according to some general principles of valuation. Generally the returns of mine proprietors Seemed to be too low. There were, however, examples of what would be termed excessive valuation. The Subject appeared to be of practical importance, and led to the paper here presented. The following table of selected mine statistics is given, prefacing the discussion of the principles of valuation. It is in part made up of census returns and partly of data obtained directly from mine owners and managers. The mines which were Selected for the Several groups and mining districts include nearly all of those from Which the more full and carefully filled returns were received, and are also representative of their respective districts. Hence the averages obtained from them become good types of these groups or districts. The mines of New Jersey appear in Six groups, each containing from three to eleven mines, or, in all, thirty-four mines. The magnetic iron ores of New York are in four well-marked groups, and there are twenty-six mines in them. Then follow the red hematite mines of St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties; and, lastly, the brown hematite groups of Dutchess and Columbia counties, and those of the adjacent parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts. The whole number of mines represented by the table is eighty-eight, of which twenty-eight are hematite mines. The first column gives the value of the real estate; the second that of the plant; the third is the sum of these two, or the capital invested. Then follow the number of men employed, the amount of wages paid during the census year, and the value of materials used in mining and preparing the ores for market.* The seventh column gives the total expendi- * The value of materials is somewhat uncertain in many cases, as royalties are included under this head. The practical execution of the design for rolling-mills presented by the writer at the Paris meeting* of thc Iron and Steel Institute in 1900 involves the determination of some questions not yet discussed, among which is the determinatioir of the amount of power required to perform the rolling of pieces of iron and steel of given dimensions. It is necessary to know this factor if we would put motors of proper capacity to the respective pairs of rolls, or, rcciprocally, if, having standard motors at our disposal, we would design grooves to suit them. Moreover, this factor is involved in giving right dimensions to every part of the rolls and housings. Expert designers of engines for driving rolling-mills of the present type receive very indefinite directions, such as: that the motor is to drive a light, medium or heavy train; that it must work with fly-wheel or reversing gear; that the number of revolutions per minute should not exceed 40 or 60, and that at a given speed the power developed should be from 100 to 200 H. P., or from 1,000 to 2,500 13. P. It frequently happens, however, that an cngine of 200 H. P. is forced under the circumstances to press or develop as much as 300 H. P., while, on the other hand, the ,1,500-11. P. engine may be rolling-stock which could be worked with a maximum expenditure of 60 to 80 H. P. Of course such variatior~s as these do not permit the best adjustment of parts or the best economy of power and fuel. The design of roll-trains is even more vaguely limited. Every part of a train, from the point where it connects with the engine to the last groove in the rolls, bears evidence that there are no rules for calculating even approximately the dimensions of the main-shafts, couplings, pinions, gears, rolls, trunnions,

The nature of slimes handled in the treatment of gold- and silver-ores has been discussed in technical literature to a considerable extent. The subject of slime-filtration from the practical worker's stand-point has also received much comment, arid scattered through the literature of the subject are descriptions of many slime-filtration installations. Articles of this nature serve a valuable purpose and assist materially in the design of new and the improvement of old plants. The subject of the physics of slime-filtration has been touched upon to only a slight extent. The underlying principles are worthy of niore intensive study and experimeritation than they have received, and the main purpose of this paper is to present the results of such study and experimental work as will serve to make clear in part at least many of the principles which control the filtration of slime. Nature of Slime. Much has been written concerning an accurate definition of the term "slime," but no comprehensive definition seems to be gcnerally accepted. The reason for this is clear. A slime consists of at least three different substances, each, when separated, possessing distinctly different physical and to a certain extent chemical properties. These substances are extremely fine sand, a colloidal material which may bc and generally is in a coagulated condition, and a colloidal material which is in a non-coagulated condition. Suspending a slime in a relatively large volume of water by shaking and allowing sedimentation to take place, results in the fine sand settling out with comparative rapidity, followed by the coagulated material, which settles niuch more slowly and finally a certain portion remains

Geologic exploration, which has experienced an upward trend in the United States since 1962, continued with increasing activity through 1965. New, spectacular discoveries of recent years and continued questionable economic and political climates in many areas of the world have continued to focus the exploration attention of an increasing number of companies on the United States. Traditional geologic field methods are being bolstered by development of new methods, techniques and geophysical instruments. Reports from the states emphasize that successful exploration is dependent upon the combined effort of geochemistry, geophysics and geology, with high quality laboratory support of the field effort becoming increasingly necessary. PROGRAMS NOW UNDERWAY IN WEST During 1965 mineral exploration reached an all- time high in Nevada. Although examinations are being carried on throughout the State, much of the work is limited to two areas. The first area to attract recent exploration interest, initiated by discovery of the Carlin gold mine by Newmont Mining Corp., is an area of windows near the leading edge of the Roberts Mountains thrust fault in northeastern Nevada. Included in this area are the old camps of Mountain City, Battle Mountain, Cortez, Mineral Hill and Eureka. Major mining companies are using a combination of surface mapping, geochemistry, geophysics (largely induced potential surveys), following up with drilling. The second area of exploration is along the Walker Lane, a wide shear zone that parallels the Nevada-California boundary from Virginia City to Las Vegas. Activity has been intense in the Tonopah-Yerington area. Discovery of a large copper-iron deposit following an airborne magnetometer survey first focused recent attention on Walker Lane. Sixteen major companies are involved in exploration in the State.

INTRODUCTION Mill production from the Homestake Mine in 1979 amounted to 1.29 Mt (1.43 million st) of ore containing 5.9 g/t of gold (0.172 oz per st) compared with 1978 production of 1.44 Mt (1.59 million st) containing 6.2 g/t of gold (0.180 oz per st). The average cost per ounce of gold produced in 1979 rose to approximately $250 contrasted with $176 in 1978. This increase in unit cost is the result of inflation, a diminishing ore grade, and productivity losses related to a shortage of experienced miners as well as compliance with federal regulatory requirements. Together, these factors prompted the investigation of several large-scale, highly mechanized underground mining methods. This analysis indicated Vertical Crater Retreat mining to be one of the safest underground methods known today, yet competitive with all other forms of stoping in terms of cost and productivity. Therefore, the feasibility of applying the VCR stoping method at the Homestake Mine was explored. Vertical Crater Retreat stoping is a recent innovation in large- scale underground mining based on C. W. Livingston's crater blasting theories. Figure 1 illustrates the method which consists of drilling 165.1-mm-diameter (6.5-in.) holes from a topsill down-dip to an under- cut on the level below. The bottom of each hole is then loaded from above with a predetermined charge weight and horizontal slices up to 4.27 m (14 ft) in thickness are blasted into the undercut. Broken ore is extracted from drawpoints located on or below the undercut level.
