The recent paper by Bain (1981) contains an unfortunate, and potentially misleading typographic error. On page 9, second paragraph, Bain states that, "some samples of drill core from the (Candlow) Formation ... contain up to 90 ppm gold and 2 000 ppm arsenic". The gold value should read 90 ppb. In fact, in the original version of the paper (Bain, 1980), the gold value quoted was actually 60 ppb.Bain also refers briefly to some geochemical data which is attributed to me, and which I feel require some clarification.In addition, the paper contains some factual errors relating to the occurrence of carbonate and potential host rocks to Carlin-type gold deposits in the Candlow Formation.

Most of the information available on the heat efficiency of hot fluid injection processes, both water and steam, has been obtained from calculated temperature distributions in the pay zone and adjacent formations. The usual approach has been to write the heat balance equations in terms of the temperatures, and then to introduce whatever simplifications are necessary to help obtain an analytical or a numerical solution. In either case, the assumption has often been made that the vertical thermal conductivity in the flooded interval is infinite, so that the temperatures within the flooded interval are then independent of vertical position. Because it was first made by Lauwerier,l and has been used extensively since, this assumption will be referred to as the Lauwerier assumption. Excellent reviews of the literature on the heat efficiency of hot fluid injection processes have been given by Spillette,2 Flock et al.,3 and Ramney.4 Of course, the most significant contributions take into account the effect of a finite vertical thermal conductivity on the vertical temperature profile. The most general analytic expression for the heat efficiency of a hot fluid injection process is that of Antimirov5 who considers injection of a heated incompressible fluid into a reservoir through an arbitrary number of wells. The rate of heat injection into the reservoir, as well as the injection temperature, is an arbitrary function of time. The geometry of the horizontal flow is arbitrary, although the reservoir is considered to be of uniform thickness and properties and to be of infinite areal extent. Heat transfer within the reservoir is by horizontal convection and conduc- tion, and by vertical conduction. In the formations adjacent to the flooded interval, heat transfer is by conduction in any direction. Thus, the available expression for the heat efficiency due to hot water injection has been developed for rather general conditions. This degree of applicability has not been obtained for other thermal recovery processes. By making the Lauwerier assumption we have been able to obtain expressions for the heat efficiency that are essentially independent of the thermal recovery process, be it steam, hot-water, or underground combustion. Clearly, then, the approach followed here is more restrictive than that of Antimirov5 in that it uses the Lauwerier assumption. At the same time less restrictive assumptions are made about the horizontal heat transfer mechanisms, either in the flooded interval or in the formations adjacent to it. The main difference between our approach and that of other investigators is that the heat balance in the pay zone is expressed for the pay zone as a whole rather than for a volume element within it. The Lauwerier assumption is introduced after the problem is developed along these lines as far as possible. The details of the development of the heat efficiency are given in the Appendix, while the main features of the model are discussed in the next section. That he was eminent we know, and our successors will realize in due time; but they must depend upon us for knowledge of a singularly wholesome, modest, unselfish personality, and of a character that did honor to a profession in which trustworthiness is indispensable: Those members of the Institute who met Emmons are his friends, and I never knew one of these who was not the better for that friendship. Emmons was born in Boston, Mar. 29, 1841, the son- of Nathaniel H. and Elizabeth (Wales) Emmons, and was named Samuel Franklin after an ancestor who was of the same family as Benjamin Franklin. He took the degree of Bachelor of Arts at Harvard in 1861, and soon afterwards went abroad to complete his education. From 1862 to 1864 he attended the courses at the École Impériale des Mines at Paris, lie e Beaumont and Daubrée being among his professors. The year 1864-1865 he spent at Freiberg under Cotta and other famous teachers; after which he spent another year in traveling through Europe. Like many other renowned geologists, he approached his ultimate profession from its economic side, and was thus from the first imbued with a sense of high responsibility in the promulgation of scientific opinions or conclusions. With hypotheses which were interesting merely because. they were ingenious or even plausible, he would have nothing to do. In 1867 he joined the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel at its organization under Clarence King, serving at first as a volunteer, but soon receiving a regular appointment. This expedition was the first one of purely geological character sent out by the United States Government. Augercast piles are formed by drilling a continuous-flight auger into the ground and, on reaching the required depth, sand-cement grout or concrete is pumped down the hollow stem as the auger is withdrawn. The sides of the hole are supported at all times by the soil-filled auger, eliminating the need for temporary casing or bentonite slurry. The augercast piling method is fast and economical; there is no vibration, very little noise and, if executed properly, no ground displacements during installation. The method is well suited to sands which are easy to drill and are readily transported up the auger. Relatively little attention has been given to augercast piles in the literature which might be part of the reason for the considerable variations in local practice, building code requirements and design methods. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the features of augercast pile installation that are known to influence both the structural and geotechnical capacity of the pile, to evaluate several empirical design methods and to look at some important aspects of quality control of augercast pile installation.

With 13.7km of TBM tunneling in Atlanta’s hard gneiss well under way, drill and shoot work continues on several sites throughout the city. In order for the City of Atlanta to meet the consent decree imposed by the federal government, an aggressive construction schedule was a necessity. Construction consists of two deep, large diameter tunnels, four construction shafts, a pumping station, one overflow shaft, three large intake structures, and two connecting tunnels. Due to the multitude of blasting insensitive urban environments, a high standard of seismic and air-overpressure criteria, coupled with time restrictions, was adopted for the project. At any given time, drill and blast operations were under way at four of the seven sites requiring a certain amount of coordination between the TBM excavation, surface work, and the forces of Mother Nature. This paper addresses the challenges faced and the techniques used to safely and successfully complete the rock excavation of the West Area CSO Tunnel and Pumping Station project.

Ceveland-Cliffs uses a specialized software package in mine planning at the Empire Mine, an iron ore mine it manages on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience that began in the early 1960s on the eastern end of the Marquette Range. The Empire Mine is in its 38th year of production. It uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low-grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short- and long-range planning.

The Barrick Osborne concentrator has gone through a number of upgrades since commissioning and has increased production from the original 119 t/h design capacity to a milling throughput of 265 t/h in 2008. This was achieved incrementally over several years, by maximising operating efficiencies, in order to minimise capital expenditure, and take advantages of economies of scale; but more importantly it was reached with no measurable loss of recovery. Osborne currently processes a blend of underground and open pit material from the nearby Trekelano deposit. Following primary/secondary crushing, the material is processed through a rod/ball mill grinding circuit ahead of rougher/scavenger flotation that produces a copper concentrate. Osborne was seeking a further increase in plant throughput of the order of 15 per cent, but at more sustainable levels of secondary crusher plant utilisation. In early 2008, Osborne contracted Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) to review the entire process from run-of-mine feed to final copper concentrate. This review would be done concurrently with surveys of both the crushing/grinding and flotation circuits being performed at the same time. The outcome would be a steady-state model of the complete flow sheet allowing the crushing/grinding model to interact with the flotation circuit model, such that overall process optimisation was possible. This was to apply both by exploring the operating limits of the currently installed plant, as well as looking at the logical next stage of capital plant expansions. Surveys of the crushing and grinding circuits were conducted at the Osborne concentrator in May 2008. The main objective of the surveys was to review the potential of increasing grinding throughput whilst maintaining the flotation feed 80 per cent passing size. This would also require improving the efficiency of the crushing circuit which was already operating in excess of 80 per cent of the time. Steady-state simulations were performed using the developed circuit models to identify opportunities to increase throughput and alleviate high circulating loads in both the secondary crushing and grinding circuits. Due to operational changes, the recommendations resulting from this project were considered by Osborne but have as yet only been partially implemented.  This paper covers part A or the crushing and grinding component of the project. A separate paper discussing part B or flotation is also being presented at this conference. The results of interactive simulations between the flotation and grinding circuit models are included in part B of this paper.

The annual mine planning process is one of the most important tactical/operational steps towards achieving strategic goals. These tactical plans are part of a very comprehensive Mineral Resource Management process, with the natural sequel to planning being execution. The execution of an underground hard rock mine plan is a multi-project environment that comprises many development-construction-equipping-stoping single project paths, which are referred to as ?stoping paths?. The uncertainty that typifies execution of projects comes in the form of untimely disruptions to constituent tasks and/or project paths. Annual mining plans also include quantified objectives for occupational health and safety, production, quality, cost, employee morale, environment, and corporate social investment. Such objectives make for a highly complex environment that management must contend with?complex in the sense that all the paths and objectives have interdependent constraints. Furthermore, at the time of this paper, Sections54*and 55**of the MHSA*** put the onus on management to ensure legislative adherence. It stands to reason that planning estimates allow excess capacity?buffers?that cushions the impact of untimely disruptions. This paper concerns the fact that despite all the buffers allowed for, time, scope, and budget creeps impact on mine planning and threaten its successful execution. As a consequence, the paper deals with buffer management, the essence of Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM). Effective buffer management provided strategic (executive level) updates without losing the tactical/operational detail necessary for job card creation, especially where professional skills and experience are in short supply. Indicative bottom-line results showed CCPM to be highly effective.

F. C. Bond: This is an outstanding paper on comminution theory and represents a considerable advance in mathematical formulation. It clears the way for a discussion that should ultimately decide whether the work index should be considered as a parameter according to the Third Theory or as a constant. In the empirical differential equation dE = —Cdx/x [1] either Corn must be treated as a variable to satisfy known crushing and grinding conditions. The author has chosen the exponent n as the variable, with C as a constant. According to the Third Theory, in the general case n is a constant equal to 3/2, and C is a variable related to the work index Wi. If x is placed equal to P (the size in microns which 80 pct of the product passes) and F is the size 80 pct of the feed passes, then C equals 5 W1, and dE = 5 -5 Widx/x = 10 Wi 10 Wi w = vP vF which is the basic equation of the Third Theory. It is apparent that this integration involves the error of treating the parameter Wi as a constant, just as the author's treatment involves the error of integrating his variable n as a constant. These errors are probably relatively unimportant, considering the small range of the variables. When more is known about the factors contained in the work index, Eq. 1 can be revised as a partial differential equation. The Third Theory exponent of 1/2, or n = 3/2 in the Charles' differential equation (Eq. l), was not chosen primarily because it is the average between the Kick and Rittinger exponents; this may be merely fortuitous, since it is illogical to define truth as the average between two errors. It was first discovered from the study of a large mass of crushing and grinding data and confirmed by laboratory testing. The general correspondence of the Third Theory equation to actual crushing and grinding results over the entire size reduction range argues strongly that a fundamental phenomenon is involved. The a posteriori theoretical explanation of the constant Third Theory exponent is that the work done in breaking rock is proportional to the length of the crack tips formed. Compressive force applied to the rock results in deformation and strain energy. When this locally exceeds the breaking strength a crack tip forms, the surrounding strain energy flows to the crack tip and extends it to split the rock, with release of the energy as heat. Under rapid impact the crack tip may form before the strain has reached equilibrium, resulting in less energy expenditure and probably a coarser product. In any case, the elastic limit of a brittle material is practically the same as its breaking strength, and the work necessary to form the crack tip is the work required to break. The crack length of a ton of broken rock cannot be measured directly. However, the particle shapes of feed and product are similar, and the crack length is considered equal to the square root of one half of the new surface area formed. It is, therefore, proportional to 1/vD, where D is the equivalent product particle diameter. This is the basis of the Third Theory equation. Many secondary factors can be imposed upon the crack length breakage. These may cause the Third Theory work index to increase or decrease somewhat as the product size becomes finer. The work index is properly a parameter rather than a constant, making it an increasingly valuable practical criterion of the work input required in crushing and grinding.

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Extension to Woolwich Arsenal provides a much-needed public transport link to this area of London. The project includes construction of 5.3mID running tunnels under the River Thames, in ground conditions that proved challenging for the Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The project also includes cut and cover tunnel approaches, an underground station, and an emergency shaft on the bank of the river. Major challenges have included tunneling under sensitive infrastructure, and working adjacent to existing operational railways at Woolwich Arsenal. This paper will describe the design and construction of the project and how these challenges were overcome.

The Old Man Range, south of Alexandra, in central Otago consists of a package of highly folded greenschist facies schist of the Wanaka lithologic association. The range is crosscut by several east to ENE-striking high angle gold-bearing quartz veins, (eg Whites Reef and Grays Reef), which were extensively worked in the late 1800s. The range is bounded on its east side by the Old Man Fault, which separates these rocks from generally flat lying and planar Caples Terrane schist. To the west of the Old Man Fault, about halfway up the range, a large subparallel, 100 m wide fault zone strikes NNW and appears to cut off the historic veins. The fault zone consists of highly sheared and folded rocks and numerous high angle cataclasites and centimetre-scale clay gouge zones. Hydrothermal alteration is not apparent and the individual faults and shears are clay altered, possibly due to weathering, without visible quartz veins. Gold, limonite pseudomorphs after pyrite and rutile are concentrated in some of the narrow cataclasites and gouge zones. These mineralised structures are texturally similar to the gold-bearing reefs and may be structurally related. It is postulated that the NNW-striking shear zone and ENE-striking veins may be a conjugate array formed during a period of Cretaceous normal faulting.

IMFA Group is the largest producer of Charge chrome not only in India but also in Asia. This Group has plants situated at Therubali and at Choudwar. They also have a Thermal power plant at Choudwar which not only caters to the power requirement of Choudwar plant but also supplies power to Therubali. The plants are fed for Chromite ore through the captive mines namely Nuasahi Chromite mines (40.47 Ha) , Bangur Chromite mines(37.34Ha), Sukinda chromite mines (116.76 Ha), Mahagiri Chromite Mine(73.777 Ha) and Chingudipal Chromite mines (26.62 Ha). Nuasahi Chromite Mine, which is situated in Keonjhar district, is an underground mine and is based upon best technological advancements in the industry. The underground mining operation is certified under ISO-9002, ISO-14001and OHSAS 18001. This not only shows the concern for the quality, environment but also for the health of the employees. The Nuashahi is the first chromite mine to backfill the opencast excavations created during the last 50 years and carry out the production from underground area below the opencast workings. This paper deals with the state of art technology of sub-level open stopping in thin ore bodies. The under-ground mine openings was started in the year 1997. In next four years the production of chromite from underground was started.(2001). At present the mine is in a good shape with several running stopes. Today it is producing around 10,000 Mt per month of chromite. The development of the mine is carried out with an average of 200 mtr per month of tunneling. The mine is having a mechanical ventilator having a capacity of24000 M3 per hour at 50mm water gauge, thus feeding sufficient air for the persons working in underground. The mine is being dewatered through a most modern positive suction sump, having a capacity of 500 cum and operated with 120 HP pumps. After commissioning of this sump in the year 2003, the mine has taken a quantum jump in production with remarkable saving in power consumption.

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) can cause serious and irreparable negative health effects, including silicosis and lung cancer. Workers in coal mines have the potential of being exposed to RCS found in dust generated by various mining processes. The silica content of respirable dust in one single mine can vary substantially over both time and location. The current monitoring approach for RCS relies on the use of traditional air sampling followed by laboratory analysis. Results generated using this approach are generally not available for several days to several weeks after sampling, and this delay prevents timely and effective intervention if needed. An alternate analytical method is needed to reduce the time required to quantify the RCS exposure of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a new method using commercially available portable infrared spectrometers for measuring RCS at the end of the sampling shift. This paper will describe the application of the new field-based RCS analytical process for coal mines, including the use of the new method with the existing Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampler Unit. In a case study conducted by NIOSH with a coal mine operator in West Virginia, field-based RCS analysis was completed at a mine site to evaluate the new technique. The RCS analysis results obtained by the field-based method in this case study showed sufficiently strong correlation with results obtained by the MSHA standard laboratory analysis method to allow the mine operator to use the field-based method for evaluating process improvements.

What is a nugget effect? In the early development of geostatistics, the term ?nugget effect? was coined for the apparent discontinuity at the beginning of many semivariogram graphs. This name was chosen to reflect the large differences found between neighbouring samples in ?nuggety? mineralizations such as Wits gold reefs. Geostatistical theory assumes that the difference between a sampled value and a potential repeat sample at the same location is actually zero. Included in this ?nugget effect? would be true variation between contiguous samples due to the nature of the mineralization, micro-fracturing, nugget or crystal size, and so on. Also included in the nugget effect would be any ?random? sampling variation which might occur due to the method in which the sample was taken, the adequacy of the sample size, the assaying process, etc. Arguments were put forward that ?sampling errors? actually exist at zero distance. Some geostatistical schools actually maintain that the ?nugget effect? is all sampling error. This would imply that ?perfect? sampling would eliminate the nugget effect entirely. There is now a dichotomy both in the geostatistical world and in the software packages provided for geostatistical analyses. It may seem academic to argue over whether the semivariogram model should take a value of zero, a value equal to the nugget effect, or a partial value at distance zero. However, the decision can have a profound effect on both the estimated resource and in our confidence on that resource. Whereas most geostatistical texts define the semivariogram model as taking the value of zero at zero distance, others imply that the full nugget effect should be used at zero distance. For example: ?The nugget effect refers to the nonzero intercept of the variogram and is an overall estimate of error caused by measurement inaccuracy and environmental variability occurring at fine enough scales to be unresolved by the sampling interval3 ?Christensen4 has shown that the ?nugget effect?, or non-zero variance at the origin of the sernivariogram, can be reproduced by a measurement error model ?The nugget effect is considered random noise and may represent short-scale variability, measurement error, sample rate, etc.5. In many training texts and Web courses, the definition of the semivariogram is ambiguous as the formulae for semivariogram models is not actually specified at zero distance6,7,8.

The Wainui Mill was conceived as a 60 - 90 t/d central mill to process gold ores of the Thames area of New Zealand from small mines in the district. The ores of the region exhibit various degrees of refractory response to conventional cyanidation leach due to the fineness of the gold, and association with pyrite. The alternative circuits involving cyanidation, flotation, and possible small-scale smelting are examined. The environmental impacts have been audited by the Commission for the Environment and were found to be acceptable.

The recovery of cyanide from a gold mill solution containing high levels of copper (400 mg/L to 900 mg/L) using the AVR process was evaluated. It was determined that acidification to pH 2 to 3 provides a suitable balance between HCN generation, copper precipitation and acid consumption. A short pilot plant campaign showed that ~75% of the feed WAD cyanide was recovered while the remainder precipitated along with copper upon acidification. The acid consumption averaged 3.5 g H2SO4 per litre of solution. The copper precipitate, consisting mostly of CuCN and CuSCN, was readily separated from the solution by gravity. The volatilization of HCN in countercurrent packed columns averaged 98.7% efficiency. Reabsorption of HCN was practically 100% in NaOH solutions and slightly lower in a lime slurry. Basic volatilizer design parameters applicable to a large-scale operation were determined, including the Henry’s Law constant and the mass transfer coefficient of HCN gas.

Over half of the molten aluminium produced at the 52,000 tons/ year eapacity plant operated by Comalco Aluminium (Bell Bay) Limited in Tasmania is cast into saleable produets by the direct chill process. Considering the importance of direct chill casting to the aluminium industry it is surprising that so little published literature on the subject is available, although Easton (1947), Smart (1954), and Uppert (1940, 1944, 1945) have contributed much toward lifting the veil of secrecy surrounding the process.The direct chill, or D.C. process as it is commonly called when related to aluminium, consists basically of feeding molten aluminium or its alloys into; water-cooled mould from the bottom of which solid aluminium is continuously extracted. Although the casting procedure is continuous in principle, the equipment is normally operated in an intermittent manner. Castings up to 20 ft long are formed during a cycle. At the end of the cycle casting is stopped and the pit into which thc castings are dropped is cleared before a new cycle commences. Depending on the size of the casting in relation to the cross sectional area of the pit and the support mechanism (commonly a hydraulic ram), 'drops' of up to 15 tons are not uncommon. This method of D.C. casting IS termed vertical D.C. casting and is the one most commonly employed in the aluminium industry.Horizontal casting has come more to the fore in recent years with the casting being extracted from the mould in the horizontal plane and is a truly continuous casting method since flying saws can be simply used to cut the continuously cast shape into required lengths as it emerges from the mould...
