The U.S. Bureau of Mines has prepared this report on strategies for maintaining high job attendance among underground coal miners because high absenteeism is a threat to miners safety and seriously hampers productivity. A substantial number of research studies on the effectiveness of various strategies for reducing absenteeism among the employees of nonmining industries have been reported in the literature. These strategies have aimed at improving job attendance through one or more of the following: (1) improving employment procedures, (2) overcoming problems that adversely affect one's ability to attend work, and (3) increasing miners motivation to attend work. Many of these strategies appear applicable to the mining industry, and are reviewed in the first half of this report. The second half of this report describes how one could develop and implement a program for maintaining high attendance at underground coal mines. The steps include: measuring and evaluating attendance levels; formulating attendance goals and an absenteeism policy; developing and implementing an attendance promotion program; and periodically going through the preceding steps known as recycling.

Success of the Gold Line Eastside Ex-tension rail tunnels in Los Angeles, CA has prompted the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s (Metro) planning new rail lines to include underground alternatives. The Westside Extension Transit Corridor alternatives include up to 27 km (17 miles) of subway to be constructed in soft ground. The routes will require construction in Los Angeles? ?potential methane zone,? which was not considered for subway construction until recently. Slurry face tunnel boring machines (TBM) will likely be specified.

This contract was concerned with the design, development, fabrication and testing of an improved tamper-proof filter cassette assembly for use in the, collection and evaluation of dust particulates, primarily in mining areas. This report presents the design effort, fabrication and tenting of five- prototypre unit$ as well as the design and production of 1000 filter cassettes with sampling heads. This new improved filter cassette has been tested and approved by NIOSH as meeting the requirements specified in the contract.

This instructors guide is intended for use in a course which teaches metal and non-metal mine inspectors to perform surveys for inhalation contaminants in above ground metal and nonmetal mine work areas. The handbook entitled "Handbook for Surveys of Inhalation Contaminants in Above Ground Metal and Nonmetal Mining and Processing Work Areas? is used as a manual during the course. The manual contains a survey check list, rules for determining if sampling is required, a list of most frequently encountered contaminants, a list of candidate contaminants and their sampling conditions, and a description of control procedures and devices. There are several experiments in this guidebook which the trainees perform to acquaint them with the sampling systems.

This paper presents the metallurgical results of column and stockpile leach tests with forced aeration to determine the usefulness of this process in the operational leaching at Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. The evolution of the aeration system is presented and also an innovative solution developed to overcome forced aeration’s main problem, which is the early obstruction of the aeration pipes located at the base of the stockpile, causing a decrease in air and oxygen levels and therefore a reduction in the metallurgical benefits.

It has been fairly firmly established (Fisher, N. H., 1945) that the fineness of the gold in any ore deposit varies with the depth from the surface at which the deposit was formed, and, as a corollary to this, that it is dependent upon the temperature and pressure at the time of deposition. This relationship is such that, under certain conditions, the gold fineness, taken into consideration with other recognised criteria, furnishes a very sensitive and reliable guide to the relative temperature of ore formation, at least within the epithermal and the upper part of the mesothermal range.Definition of Fineness.The fineness of gold is calculated in parts per thousand and refers to the proportion of gold present in the naturally occurring metal in the lode, which is actually a gold-silver alloy, containing usually about 10 parts per thousand of base metal and up to 500 parts perthousand of silver. A clear distinction should be made between fineness and gold-silver ratio. The latter refers to the total gold and silver in the lode as determined by assay and is usually expressed as the ratio Au:Ag. Only in deposits where other silver-bearingminerals are entirely absent, which occurs comparatively rarely, can the gold-silver ratio be used as a measure of gold fineness and, in many cases, the two have no relationship. For instance, in the Edie Creek area in New Guinea, the lodes formed under shallow epithermal conditions all carry gold 500 to 550 fine, although the gold-silver ratio ranges from 1:100 to 1:1, in places in adjacent lodes.Determination of Gold Fineness.The fineness of lode gold can be determined only after it has been separated from all other minerals. Amalgamation recovers gold fairly cleanly - unless native silver is present - and the fineness of amalgam bullion is generally a reliable indication of the correct fineness of the gold. If the use of plates is involved, the bullion may be adulterated, but the effect of any copper, or other metal, that may have been introduced can be cancelled by assuming that the gold and silver shouJrl add up to about 990 fine, or by ignoring the base metal content altogether, which varies little in naturally-occurring gold, and in calculating for comparison purposes all fineness figures to the basis Au + Ag = 1,000.The composition of bullion obtained from cyanidation is generally intermediate between the true gold fineness and the total gold-silver proportion as determined by assay of mine or mill-head samples of Cyanide solution dissolves other silver-bearing minerals and the fineness of the resulting bullion is thereby lowered. Consequently, the fineness of cyanide bullion rarely corresponds to the true gold fineness and is useless for diagnostic purposes, although it is a common fallacy to refer to the fineness of cyanide bullion as the fineness of the gold.

Dusts can be filtered out of air streams onto polymer surfaces by electrostatic trapping resulting from the spontaneous transfer of electrons upon contact between dust particles and the polymer surfaces. Such spontaneous contact electrification has been studied quantitatively in this contract with the aid of modern semiconductor charge-sensors with the aim of determining what basic principles govern the sign and magnitude of contact electrification. Information obtained by capacitance-voltage measurements of thin polymer films on silicon showed that charges as large as 4 x 1012 electrons per cm2 develop spontaneously, and that such a charge gives adhesional forces of 165 pounds per square inch (11 atmospheres). Direct measurement of dust polymer contact electrification, using silicon surface channel conductance sensors, also showed spontaneous charges of more than 1012 electrons per cm2. Some polymers can either donate or accept electrons. These included chlorinated polyethylene, chlorinated polypropylene, polyethylmethacrylate, and a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinylether. Other polymers never accepted electrons but could donate electrons; these included polystyrene, pulychlorostyrune, polyvinylchloride, polyvinylacetate, a polycarbonate (Lexan), and cellulose tributyrate. Contact electrification studies were made with dusts (coal dust, a channel black, or a silica powder) contacting thin films of various polymers solvent-cast onto the semiconductor charge-sensor. Sometimes charging was instantaneous and sometimes slower, but in all but one case (coal dust on a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinyl ether) the charge trunsfer was a donation of electrons by the polymer to the dust. It's long been suspected that there has been an increase in the incidence of premature failure of rock bolts in underground coal mines over the past ten years. As far back as 2002 a study found a possible contributor to such premature failure in some Australian coal mines might be linked to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) (Crosky et al, 2002). That study suggested the low impact toughness could be a major influence on the susceptibility to SCC of different steel compositions. A subsequent study involving laboratory corrosion tests however failed to confirm any link with metallurgical factors (Villalba and Atrens, 2007), a finding that is at odds with field experience. Some mine sites today are still reporting prematurely failed rock bolts to the rock bolt manufacturers; the failures are being identified at SCC induced. To this end a research project has recently been commissioned at University of New South Wales (UNSW), which aims to identify the environmental factors causing SCC, through field test sites and simulating the conditions within an accelerated corrosion laboratory. This paper outlines the methodology that will be used in this study.

Gold has been demonstrated as a possible catalyst for oxidation reactions. Some evidence for a possible promotion effect of platinum has also been recorded. The influence of platinum as promoter for Au/?-Al2O3 prepared via anionic ion-exchange for the oxidation of glycerol was investigated in a batch reactor at 60°C. It is inferred that the addition of platinum reduces the catalytic activity and therate of deactivation, resulting in an overall higher final conversion of glycerol with increasing platinum loading. The addition of platinum to the catalyst favours the formation of the desired product, glyceric acid.

Introduction It is estimated that nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in free world countries has been produced by South African operations. There is concern that this immense productive capacity will soon decline. Such a decline could reduce world gold supply and lessen the ability of market economy countries (MEC) to exert the major influence upon the world gold market. This paper addresses three general issues concerning South African gold production: • How much gold remains to be recovered from the demonstrated resources of the 44 evaluated South African mines; • How long can production at current levels continue; and • What will be its cost. Table 1 provides production data on the world's 10 largest producers for the years 1971, 1981, and 1983. As shown, South African gold production declined significantly from 1971 through 1981. As of 1981, annual South African gold production had dropped by more than 311 t (10 million oz) in 10 years. Despite this, its mines still produced 656 t (21 million oz) that year, about half the world total. From 1981 through 1983, this trend was reversed. Annual South African gold production increased by more than 21.8 t (700,000 oz). The trend reversal was also evident in the US, Canada, and Australia. This illustrates the general, inverse relationship between gold price and gold production. In South Africa especially, as gold prices increased substantially during the 1970s, the average grade of ore mined (pay limit) was lowered as new, lower grade areas and materials were exploited. Gold production declined in volume. But gold revenues increased, and the lives of the operations were extended. The 1981-83 period was one of declining (US dollar-based, average annual) gold prices that resulted in increasing South African production as average ore grades were raised. South Africa currently accounts for 50% of world production (Fig. 1). Figure 2 illustrates South Africa's contribution to total MEC production in 1971 and 1983. Although South Africa's relative share of production has declined, it still represents the single most important source of new gold supply. In 1983, it supplied more than 65% of total MEC production. South Africa currently produces more than twice as much gold as the Soviet Union (ranked second in world production), and 11 times more gold than the US (ranked fourth in world production). "BHP-Billiton’s Minera Escondida Limitada, in Chile, is one of the world’s largest copper producers. It treats a combined 10,500 tph of copper ore through its two concentrators: Los Colorados and Laguna Seca. The performance of the rougher circuit at each concentrator was measured and analysed using the JKTech flotation optimisation methodology. This involved developing a flotation model for each concentrator based on cell operating parameters (for example bubble surface area flux and froth recovery) and feed ore floatability characteristics. The rougher circuit performance was evaluated in terms of traditional measures, such as grade and recovery. The operation was also analysed using the measured cell operating parameters and ore floatability and the effect of these with regard to performance (grade / recovery) was assessed.This paper presents a comparison of the rougher circuit at each concentrator in terms of these parameters. The main differences in rougher circuit performance between the two plants were attributed to differences in feed ore floatability characteristics and froth recovery. The comparison highlighted opportunities where performance improvements could be made. The study also showed the usefulness of separating the flotation process into easily measurable subprocesses to further identify the different mechanisms occurring in each rougher circuit. Traditional measures like grade and recovery are useful for monitoring flotation operation but this data lacks the depth to determine the root cause behind operational issues. Determining the operating parameters and ore floatability provides the operating plant metallurgist better tools to assess and manage these issues."

The ability to precondition (weaken) a rock mass to enhance caving (cavability and fragmentation) is becoming increasingly important, as more potential caving deposits are in stronger rock masses, and at greater depth. This paper discusses a full-scale blast preconditioning experiment conducted at the Cadia East mining operation, including quantification of visible and microscale blast damage. From a cave mining perspective, the objectives of the experiment were to quantify the effect of confined blasting on rock mass characteristics relevant to enhanced caving, and to provide calibration data for the purpose of numerically modelling alternative blast preconditioning designs.The experiment was located approximately 360 m below surface, and consisted of two f165 mm blastholes (60 m vertical holes) and eight HQ diamond drill monitoring holes (35 m horizontal holes). The diamond drill holes were used to sample the rock mass before and after the blast at varying distances from the blastholes. Rock mass blast damage was quantified both visually using core logging, and on a microscale using LABYRINTH® statistical analysis of X-ray microtomography data. Results from the experiment indicated four major findings:on the visible scale, the experiment indicated a 147 per cent increase in the number of hairline cracks within 5 m (p value = 0.015), but no change in geotechnical logging parametersmicroscale tomography of intact rock samples indicate significant localised intact rock damage up to 4 m from the blasthole (p = 0.007)preliminary point load test results indicate that blast damage results in a significant reduction in intact rock strength (p = 0.050)the significant increase in porosity and microfracture size associated with damage provides a mechanism for reduced intact rock strength due to confined blasting.CITATION:Stewart, P C, Brunton, I, Francis, D and Chitombo, G, 2016. Bench-scale flotation tests were conducted on two western tactite ores to study the recovery of tungsten and zinc minerals. The investigation, which is part of the Bureau of Mines ongoing program to develop methods for beneficiating minerals and metals from domestic low-grade ores, demonstrated the feasibility of producing scheelite, sphalerite, and their bulk concentrates. Sphalerite concentrates containing 51 to 53 pet Zn and less than 0.11 pct W03 were selectively recovered prior to scheelite flotation. Zinc recovery ranged from 85 to 91 pct. Scheelite concentrates containing 17 to 25 pct W03 were then recovered from the ore; tungsten recoveries ranged from 88 to 94 pct. Bulk flotation concentrates containing 84 to 91 pct of the W03 and 87 to 95 pct of the zinc also were prepared. More than 98 pct of the W03 in a bulk concentrate containing 9 pct W03 was extracted by autoclave leaching with a soda solution. The zinc remained in the leached residue.

Many industries such as the cement industry handle large quantities of limestone and clay slurries. However, at present very little is known about the flow properties, such as friction loss due to flow of slurries in pipelines. This lack of knowledge has made it often very difficult to calculate the total dynamic head of a proposed slurry handling system, and therefore has often made the selection of correct size slurry handling equipment difficult. Because of lack of knowledge about slurry flow a study of slurry flow theory has been made at the Portland Cement Association's Research and Development Laboratory with the idea of developing a method whereby friction losses due to slurry flow may be predicted for any size pipeline. The flow equations developed have been checked by pilot plant size equipment. DERIVATION OF FLOW EQUATIONS It has been known for some time that limestone and clay slurries handled in cement plants do not flow in the same manner as a Newtonian fluid such as water. When a Newtonian fluid flows the shear stress at any flow velocity is proportional to the rate of shear. This phenomenon can be illustrated by a line (Figure 1). The viscosity of the fluid is the slope of the curve. Thus, the flow properties of the material may be characterized by a single materials constant: viscosity. When a non-Newtonian fluid with the type of characteristics exhibited by limestone and clay slurr-ries flow, a similar curve can be constructed (Figure 2). This graph is a shear diagram of a Bingham plastic non-Newtonian fluid. It should be noted that with the Bingham(1) plastic type of flow viscosity, the slope of the curve, is still an important materials constant. In addition, however, there is another materials constant, namely the yield stress of the material. One way to visualize this constant is to consider it as the amount of energy that must be put into a Bingham plastic material to start it flowing.

On July 1, the Bonneville Power Administration announced a 25% power cutback because of lower than normal stream flow. In September, the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) announced plans to shut down one 23,000-ton-per-year potline at its Vancouver, Wash., primary aluminum smelter. Alcoa also announced that the last of four potlines at its Point Comfort, Tex., primary aluminum smelter would be restarted in October. A new 3-year contract was signed and workers at three Alcan Aluminum Ltd. primary aluminum smelters in Canada returned to work. It was estimated that it would take about 3 months before the smelters were operating at full capacity.

The reality of rising electrical power costs and the haunting prospect of decreasing electrical power availability are a threat to the growth of new projects and expansion programmes that could negatively affect the sustainability of mining operations. These threats require the adoption of effective power saving measures aimed at three principal objectives: the elimination of wastage, the reduction of power usage particularly during peak demand periods and, more importantly, improving the efficiency of high power-demand processes. It is reasonable to assume that the greatest impact will be achieved by concentrating on those processes that are large electrical power consumers. For Anglo Platinum operations, mine ventilation and, currently to a lesser extent, mine cooling are two continuous processes that fall in this category. It is estimated that these may consume fifteen to thirty-five per cent of the power delivered to the shaft head-depending on the shaft's design. Mine ventilation systems suffer from inherent, historical inefficiencies that lead to excessive power consumption. Air cooling systems are designed to be energy-wise in terms of modulating refrigeration plant operation to meet the underground requirements while maximizing use of 'free' cooling from surface conditions. Currently about ninety-five per cent of the refrigeration capacity used in Anglo Platinum mines is dedicated to surface bulk air coolers. The net thermal efficiency of these systems is compromised as mines expand in depth and on strike. Looking to the future, this practice will be complemented by more energy demanding underground cooling tactics requiring considerably higher electrical power consumption per unit ton produced. To counter this increase in power consumption, more energy-efficient systems and advantageous transient strategies such as thermal storage and the use of ice-on surface and possibly even underground-are being considered. This paper describes work currently undertaken and planned by Anglo Platinum operations to reduce power consumption by main fans during off-shift periods, the associated efforts currently introduced to reduce underground air leakage, the possibility of introducing more efficient auxiliary ventilation systems, the feasibility of thermal storage, and a brief look at energy recovery system as a means of countering the anticipated power demand associated with underground cooling. This paper discusses the progress of the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine from the pre-feasibility study completed in 2005, through commencement of development access in 2008, completion of the feasibility in 2010 and cave initiation in late 2015. This fourth lift of caving in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is located 500 m below the currently producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and represents approximately half a billion tonnes of ore and around 1900 planned drawpoints, scheduled to be mined at a peak of 80 000 t/d.The paper reviews the mine design, access requirements, planned footprint sequence and major fixed facility installations such as ventilation, oreflow and shops. Near-field blast vibration response of restrained pipelines either buried or exposed was studied during rock excavations at sensitive locations for Stage-II (4x500 MW) commissioning work in a super thermal powerplant of the National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd. (NTPC) of India. The existing running plant of capacity 1000 MW has many important installations including pipelines of varying diameters. These pipelines were very close to the blasting locations (mostly within 12m). Blast optimization and consequent monitoring of vibrations were carried out simultaneously for more than 250 experimental blasts conducted by the authors. This paper emphasized, particularly, on the safety of pipelines and their responses due to repeated blasting impacts. A few guidelines supported by theoretical derivations are provided for futuristic research.

The Huntsville study area in northeastern Alabama consists of Jackson, Limestone, Madison, and Marshall Counties. Major emphasis was placed on the Huntsville urban area in Madison County to analyze the relationship of urban growth and the minerals industry. Huntsville was delineated into its component urban, suburban, and rural parts for 1964, and the primary area of growth was predicted for 1990. Population estimates were made for the four-county area as a unit and Madison County separately, and projected to 1990. Demand estimates for crushed stone and sand and gravel were made for the same area units and projected to 1990. Analysis of quarry sites in the Huntsville area was made for the present and for the future. The mineral operations of the study area are all located in rural areas; in the case of Huntsville, the mineral sites are located in areas defined as "rural" in the component urban-suburban-rural system. The operations outside Madison County can expect to have minor problems with urban encroachment, while those operations in Madison County can expect major problems associated with urban growth and development. Some of the problems associated with limes tone production can be reduced if producers invest in capital equipment that will reduce the nuisances inherent in this activity. Although urban expansion endangers some quarry operations in Huntsville, topographic and political restrictions which prevent urban expansion can effectively shield quarry operations for some time.
