Retaining walls for the construction of underground urban infrastructures have to be executed considering the impact of a deep foundation job-site within an urban network. Traditional excavation systems, based on the use of grabs and bentonite mud, involve serious problems such as: the opening of trenches adjacent to existing buildings; the cleaning of the working area; the site installation for the production and storage of the bentonite mud; the transport and disposal of soil contaminated with bentonite mud. Alternative solutions have therefore been developed in order to overcome these problems. For temporary works soil consolidation methods, combined with the use of sheet piles, have been implemented, by a combination of traditional mixing methods and jet grouting systems to speed up the operations, consequently reducing the construction time. For permanent works two new techniques named respectively CSP (Cased Secant Piles) and CDW (Continuous Diaphragm Walls) have been studied, applied and tested.

Ground characterized by hard boulders embedded in soft matrix represents one of the most challenging conditions for TBMs, as the cutterhead must cope with the non-optimal conditions of cutting hard blocks while simultaneously excavating through soft, soil-like matrix material. Dowden and Robinson (2001) and Hunt and Mazhar (2004) summarize several case histories relating to the problems of advancing a TBM through boulder-laden ground and provide guidance with respect to appropriate site investigations and baselining strategies. Some rock types constituting boulder-laden ground include: ?Sedimentary Rocks?cemented alluvial channel deposits, colluvium/talus, landslide debris, and glacial till. ?Igneous Rocks?agglomerates, lahars, and pyroclastic deposits. ?Metamorphic Rocks?tectonic mélange and cataclastic fault zones. ?Decomposed Rocks?corestone bearing saprolites. Disc cutters are commonly utilized to cut the hardblocks; however, as compared to the understanding of disc cutter behavior in hard continuous rocks, little is known regarding fundamental cutting mechanisms in highly heterogeneous bouldery ground conditions. To advance this understanding, a suite of full scale tests have been performed using a linear cutting machine at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). This paper summarizes the observed cutting mechanisms and their practical implications for TBM excavations through boulder-laden ground.

A batch incubation experiment has been carried out to investigate the optimal condition for the microbial remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in soils contaminated by chromate ore processing residue at Hunan Iron-Alloy Factory in China. The optimal condition was obtained by comparing the remediation efficiency of Cr (VI) by indigenous bacteria under different culture media, the quantity of nutrient sources, the pH and the temperature. The results indicated that glucose and yeast extract was the optimal component of culture medium and the quantities of the above components were 8 g L-1 and 13 g L-1, respectively. The optimal temperature and pH value were 30_ and 10.0, respectively. A bioreactor was operated under the optimal condition to evaluate the efficiency of Cr(VI) remediation in the contaminated soil. The result showed that water soluble Cr(VI) in soils was reduced from 320 mg kg-1 Cr(VI) of the initial concentration to below detection limit after 30 h in a bioreactor. Thus, there is a large potential to make bioremediation for the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by the addition of optimal culture medium under aerobic condition.

Work has been carried out in the development and testing of carbon monoxide (CO) detection devices which use silica-gel impregnated with metal salts. If carbon monoxide is present, the ?detection gel? (the treated silica-gel) changes from a yellow to a blue-green or blue color. The detection gel "regenerates", i.e., returns to its original yellow color, within 4-24 hours after removal from air containing CO. The detection gel exhibits a threshold of CO response which can be adjusted over a wide range of CO concentrations, typically from 50-500 ppm in air. The preparation of detection gel using salts of palladium, molybdenum and copper is described. Also reported are the results of testing the detection gel&apos;s response to carbon monoxide under varying conditions of temperature and humidity and in the presence of some potentially interfering gases. Low levels of hydrogen sulfide (~ 5 ppm)1 nitrogen dioxide (< 7 ppm), and acetylene (> 200 ppm) were found to affect the detection gel. Temperature and humidity were also found to affect the detection gel&apos;s response. Increasing temperature shortens the gel?s response time while increasing the humidity delays the gel?s response and alters the threshold of the gel. A brief discussion of the further research and development necessary to stabilize the detection gel?s desirable characteristics is included. Descriptions of testing equipment and procedures are covered in detail.

Coal seam gas (CSG) exploration and development requires the abstraction of significant amounts of water. This is so because gas desorbtion in coal seams takes place only after aquifer pressure has been reduced by prolonged pumping of aquifer water. CSG waters have a specific geochemical signature which is a product of their formation process. These waters have high bicarbonate, high sodium, low calcium, low magnesium, and very low sulphate concentrations. Additionally, chloride concentrations may be high depending on the coal depositional environment. This particular signature is not only useful for exploration purposes, but it also highlights potential environmental issues that can arise as a consequence of CSG water disposal. Since 2002 L&amp;M Coal Seam Gas Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, have been involved in exploration and development of CSG in New Zealand. Anticipating disposal of CSG waters as a key issue in CSG development, they have been assessing CSG water quality along with exploration work. Coal seam gas water samples from an exploration well in Maramarua closely follow the geochemical signature associated with CSG waters. This has helped to identify CSG potential, while at the same time assessing the chemical characteristics and water generation processes in the aquifer. Neutral pH and high alkalinity suggest that these waters could be easily managed once the sodium and chloride concentrations are reduced to acceptable levels.

The paper describes an improved process for the recovery, purification, and concentration of copper values from acidic dump leach liquors. The process employs a new liquid ion exchange material (LIX® 64 reagent) capable of separating copper values from iron and other impurities common to dump leach liquors in the typical pH range of 1.4-3.0. Properties and performance of the reagent are discussed. Design scale-up information for both pilot plants and commercial installations, including preliminary economics, are presented. Economic considerations include the production of electrolytic copper from the purified copper aqueous concentrate. INTRODUCTION Since the commercial acceptance of the liquid ion exchange process in the mineral processing industry, it has been predicted that a wide selection of chemical reagents to efficiently and economically separate many metals in solution under a wide range of conditions would be commercially available. Several years ago, General Mills began a basic research and development program to determine if it were possible to develop a reagent to extract economically metallic ion from existing process streams. Progress toward reaching this objective was reported in late 1963, when development of quantities of LIX -63 reagent, a highly selective reagent for the extraction of copper, was introduced. The properties of this reagent are described in a previous paper.&apos; The development work with this reagent indicated that perhaps the largest potential application for a copper extractant, the treatment of acidic dump leach liquors, would not be economically possible with LIX-63 because of limitations of the reagent to extract copper below a pH of 3.0. The relatively small pH adjustment required with LIX-63 would result in a significant processing cost and the undesirable precipitation of ferric hydroxide from the liquor. This pointed to the need for another copper extractant which would extract copper from dump leach liquors without pH adjustment. General Mills was successful in synthesizing a molecule which does not have the pH limitation of the LIX-63, yet possesses the selectivity-solubility properties required of a metallic extractant. The resulting LIX-64 reagent broadens the pH range from which copper can be effectively extracted and separated from other metallic impurities. Of special significance is the fact that the reagent, LIX-64 was developed by combining the technical requirements of a specific problem in hydro-metallurgy with theoretical organic and physical chemical principles.

"SynopsisThe relationship between niobium content and austenite grain growth has been investigated through hot rolling simulation on a Bähr dilatometer. The effect of delay time between passes during rough rolling in Nbmicroalloyed steels with nitrogen contents typical for electric arc furnace (EAF) melting was studied. The results indicate that the grain growth constants n, Q, and A increase with an increase in Nb content. The activation energy for austenite grain growth Q was found to be in the range of 239 to 572 kJ/mol, the exponential constant n ranged from 2.8 to 6.2, and the material and processing condition constant A from 4.24 × 1012 to 4.96 × 1028, for steels with niobium contents ranging from 0.002% Nb to 0.1% Nb. A general constitutive equation for the prediction of austenite grain growth in these Nb-microalloyed steels under rough rolling conditions has been developed. Good agreement between the experimental and the predicted values was achieved with this constitutive equation.IntroductionGrain refinement has been found to increase both the strength and toughness of steels (Gao and Baker, 1998; Sharma, Lakshmanan, and Kirkaldy, 1984; Seok et al., 2014; Maalekian et al., 2012). It is also known that the austenite grain size directly influences the microstructure, and thus the mechanical properties, of the steel (Maalekian et al., 2012; Yue et al., 2010). Effective grain growth control is reported to be achieved through addition of precipitate-forming elements, such as Nb that, slow down the grain boundary migration through pinning and solute drag mechanisms (Yu et al., 2010; Olasolo et al., 2011; Alogab et al., 2007). Much work has been carried out on austenite grain lsize control by the addition of precipitate-forming elements that have a strong affinity for interstitial elements, such as carbon and nitrogen, which form the dispersed pinning particles to inhibit the austenite grain growth (Alogab et al. 2007; Hodgson and Gibbs, 1992; Nanba et al., 2003; Flores and Martinez, 1997; Rollett, Srolovitz and Anderson, 1989). Austenite grain growth can be described using a conventional or a modelling approach. With conventional approaches (e.g. metallography), in-situ monitoring of austenite grain growth at high temperatures is impossible. Modelling the grain growth behaviour based on available data is the ideal option. To quantitatively describe austenite grain growth therefore requires development of a sound mathematical austenite grain growth equation that accounts for the effects of the varying microalloying elements in inhibiting austenite grain growth. Numerous attempts have been made to develop an empirical model based on the general equation developed by Sellars and Whiteman (1979). Many of these models do not account for the direct effects of the microalloying elements such as Nb in austenite grain growth control [Fu et al., 2011; Wang and Wang, 2008; Wang et al., 2006; Shanmugama et al., 2005; Banerjee et al., 2010; Pous-Romeroa et al., 2013). The current work has considered this limitation, taking into account the direct effect of niobium in grain growth control during thermal processing. This is done by incorporating the initial austenite grain size Do and the microalloying element niobium in the development of a constitutive equation for grain growth prediction in Nb-containing microalloyed steels."

Numerical modelling was used to examine priming of bulk commercial explosives. Data for the HOM equation of state were calculated using a representative chemical composition, while Forest Fire model data were calculated, using a Pop plot which was estimated on the basis of existing sensitivity data, albeit for cap sensitive, small diameter explosives. The length and diameter of the primer, the location of the detonator in the primer and the shape of the primer form a set of parameters which are investigated. The effect of confinement and borehole diameter are also demonstrated, as reflections of shock waves create regions of high pressure in the explosive. The results are presented in terms of pressure and decomposition histories in the explosive and are interpreted in an engineering fashion to form rational suggestions for optimization of the priming process in the field.

The Oblaga Cu-Au skarn deposit and porphyry prospect is located in the south-eastern edge of the Gobi Desert in western Inner Mongolia. The deposit occurs within metamorphosed middle Paleozoic volcanic, plutonic and sedimentary rocks. &nbsp; Ivanhoe geologists recognise eight main rock types in the area. Calcareous sediments include conglomerate, interlayered siltstone-sandstone, and limestone. Covering the calcareous sediments is a slab of thrusted biotite granite, and above it is rhyodacitic lithic tuff which, in places, is overlain by alluvial sediments. Various plutonic rocks and related intrusion breccias have intruded these units. Monzodiorite, quartz-monzonite and monzonite tend to form thin, high-angle intrusions and the youngest andesitic intrusions are generally wider and subhorizontal. &nbsp; The Oblaga Cu-Au skarn, which occurs in the calcareous sediments, shows typical prograde and retrograde mineralogy. Petrographic studies show that prograde skarn minerals have been overprinted by retrograde skarn minerals, and original host rock minerals have been texturally obliterated and completely replaced. The mineralogy of the Oblaga skarn deposit is very similar to other Cu-Au skarn deposits worldwide. &nbsp; Sericitic and minor chloritic alteration occurs throughout the study area and may relate to porphyry-style mineralisation. Generally, this alteration is not intense and most rocks have retained their original texture. Geochemical analyses suggest that K-metasomatism is not widespread at Oblaga. XRD analyses suggest an upward and outward transition from sericitic to chloritic alteration. &nbsp; Comparisons between Oblaga and other porphyry Cu-Au deposits worldwide show that Oblaga has very similar characteristics to deposits that have undergone sericitic alteration. However, Oblaga is special because it also has relatively intense chloritic alteration, which is uncommon in other porphyry Cu deposits described in the literature.

Of all the blast monitor& instrumentation systems and techniques av&able today, highspeed photography and videography remain as the most valuable, stand alone, diagnostic techniques to evaluate full scale blasts in the mining and explosives industries. Highspeed image data, coupled with information from other instrumentation systems, such as continuous VOD records, seismographs, laser surveying systems, refraction seismographs, etc. can eIiminate many assumptions about what actually took place in a blast. Thus, diagnostic confidence in evaluating both good and bad blasts is increased, and optimum blast designs are achieved considerably faster when compared to the trial and error approach or relying on just the experience factor.

Overcoring tests were conducted at the Near-Surface Test Facility(NSTF) to assess the suitability of five techniques (U.S. Bureau of Mines borehole deformation gauge (BDG), Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) hollow inclusion stress cell, Luleå triaxial gauge (LuH gauge), and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) doorstopper) for in situ stress determination in a closely jointed basalt. This effort is in support of the Basalt Waste Isolation Project, which is studying the feasibility of locating a nuclear waste repository in the basalts of the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington. This paper presents the results from the overcoring study that formed the basis for selection of two techniques to be used during the further exploration of the basalt formations at depth.

Dry separation of iron ore fines and other heavy minerals has previously been achieved using one of two main approaches. The first is an inclined table with an upward airflow via small holes to help form an autogenous dense medium. The second is based on fluidised beds comprising a dense medium formed by fine particles suspended in an upward flow of air. In either case, vibration can be introduced. This paper describes recent findings using a novel system referred to as the Sink-Hole Fluidiser, which utilises elements of both these two former approaches. This device consists of a conventional gas-fluidised bed of fine medium with a 1 mm aperture mesh located at the surface. This mesh contains relatively large holes that act as sink-holes. The fluidised media flows upwards through the sink-holes and then falls back into the fluidised bed via the fine apertures in the mesh. The particles being separated, which are much larger than the fine media, pass over these sink-holes, where they either sink or float. The sink-holes offer a more precise balance of forces, applied on a single particle basis, resulting in robust density separation.Experiments have been performed using 2.0–4.0 mm tracer particles of density varying from 2.4 to 4.8 relative densities (RD) separated in a 200 mm diameter Sink-Hole Fluidiser with a single 13 mm diameter centrally-located sink-hole. In this preliminary semi-batch work, it was found that the Sink-Hole Fluidiser was able to achieve sharp separations (Ep as low as 0.20). Queensland?s underground coal industry, as a whole, has arguably the best gas monitoring systems in the world. Each mine utilizes real time, tube bundle and onsite ultra fast gas chromatograph systems. Queensland?s mining legislation has specific requirements for mine gas monitoring but there is no requirement for all three techniques. Industry has however identified the need for all three and adopted this as a standard, resulting in over sixty thousand gas results collected each day. Automated monitoring systems are programmed to alarm for gas concentrations, gas ratios and explosibility. These alarms are then used to initiate predetermined actions to take control of the situation and prevent the compromise of safety to workers and the loss of resources. Dedicated software packages have been developed to assist in the interpretation of the large volume of results generated. The real time systems are used for real time warning, essential for incidents such as belt fires. Tube bundle systems suit long term trending used for identification of the onset of spontaneous combustion or for the determination of explosibility during the routine sealing of worked areas. Gas chromatograph analysis is used to provide a complete analysis and provides results for hydrogen and ethylene, key gases used in the assessment of spontaneous combustion. It is also crucial during significant spontaneous combustion events and coal fires to use gas chromatography to determine the explosibility status of the underground atmosphere otherwise the severity of the situation is likely to be under estimated. This paper outlines the need for all three techniques for assessing the underground status and outlines advantages and disadvantages of each.

The Huntington Beach oil field is on the Pacific Coast, southeast of the City of Los Angeles (Fig. 1). It lies both onshore and offshore. Most of the onshore section is operated by Standard Oil Co. of California, WOI. The Tar reservoir is of upper Pliocene age, about 200 ft thick, and consists principally of fine-grained, unconsolidated, somewhat shaly sand, with thin inter-bedded shale stringers throughout (Fig. 2). The reservoir is a broad, highly faulted, elongated anticline, with an areal extent of about 370 acres. Most of the faults bisecting the structure are normal, trend north-south, and are the main cause of reservoir discontinuity (Figs. 3 and 4). From 1964 to Dec., 1967, 259 steam stimulations were performed on a total of 125 Tar sand wells. Eighty-six new wells were drilled and steam stimulated. Of the total, 96 have been stimulated twice, 34 three times and 3 four times. During this same period, a two-injector steam drive pilot has been in progress. The response obtained from this project has been compared with the response to cyclic stimulation. This paper presents an analysis of the field observations for the two methods of thermal recovery. History of Development Drilling to the Tar pool commenced in 1924 with an initial well production of 40 to 50 B/D of 12o API gravity oil. Complete primary development of the pool has been spread over several years. Approxi- mately 40 wells were drilled during the first phase of development, which was completed in 1945. The subsequent primary development started in 1960 with initial well productions of 30 to 40 B/D oil. Thirty-seven wells were completed in the Tar pool during this phase. For the most part, slotted, gravel flow packed liners have been used in the wells in this pool. A cyclic steam stimulation pilot was initiated in March, 1964. Based on the very successful stimulation in the pilot area, the cyclic stimulation project was expanded to include all of the Tar pool wells producing at the end of 1965 (Fig. 5). Also, a development drilling program was begun at this time. To date, 86 new wells have been drilled under this program. The number of wells drilled each year in this secondary phase of development is also shown in Fig. 5. New Well Completion Practices Most of the new wells have been completed to produce from both the Upper and Lower Tar zones. Generally, a casing stub is cemented from the top of Lower Tar to the base of clean Upper Tar sands to exclude intermediate water-bearing sands. The water string is then cemented from the top of Upper Tar to about 1,500 ft with neat cement and 30 percent silica flour. The annulus from 1,500 ft to surface is then filled with a petroleum-based gel through a high-temperature port collar. This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

This paper presents a case study of a cyclic lateral pile load testing program performed on two 18-in square prestressed concrete piles (PSC) in Savannah, Georgia. The load test program was developed to simulate the lateral behavior of a single pile under seismic loading conditions for the design and construction of a large LNG storage tank. The lateral load tests included cyclic loading to measure possible degradation in soil response followed by static loading to large displacements (around 6 inches at the loading point). The lateral load was applied through a reciprocating jack positioned to push and pull the piles against each other. The test piles were instrumented with multiple displacement transducers, downhole inclinometer, and strain gauges. This paper provides an interpretation of the test results regarding the pile performance and soil response to monotonic and cyclic lateral loading. A backfitted computational model of the soil resistance was developed to match the test results using the LPILE computer program. The load-deflection and deflection/moment versus depth comparisons suggest that this model appears to capture the behavior relatively well within the general range of suitability for design purposes. New design curves were developed based on the soil parameters derived from the lateral load test results.

"Flotation circuit of the Sarcheshmeh copper mine, which processes 40,000 t/d of ore at 0.9% Cu, consists of rougher, cleaning and recleaning stages. To study the stage recovery of copper, one of the eight identical flotation banks was selected for sampling. It was observed that 17% of copper goes to the tailings and the lowest copper recovery was for particles coarser than 105 microns. The third five-cell unit of this bank not only did not recover appreciable amount of copper but also decreased the concentrate grade. The grade of the last five cells was lower than the feed grade suggesting that mixing of the concentrates of the three units was not beneficial. To alleviate the problem, the concentrate of the first four-cell unit was directed to the cleaners feed box (i.e., by- passing the regrind mill). This increased the overall copper recovery by 1.7 %. Also rather than the current practice of adding the reagents only at the feed tank (i.e., 100-0-0%), various combinations of stage addition were examined. It was found that 75-25-0% addition regime could increase the total copper recovery by 1.3%. At the recleaning stage in order to increase the final copper concentrate grade, a froth washing system was used. To ease the maintenance of the system, a shower type washing system was installed. The optimum wash water superficial flowrate was found to be 0.06 cm/s. Continuos sampling of the recleaners with and without wash water over a period of two months showed an increase of 1.5% in the final copper concentrate grade at constant overall copper recovery.INTRODUCTIONThe Sarcheshmeh copper ore body that may rank as third or fourth largest in the world contains 1 billion tonnes averaging 0.9% copper and 0.035% molybdenum. It is located in southeastern Iran and has been processing 40 000 t/d of ore since 1982. The mine produces 100 000 tonnes of copper and 2200 tonnes of molybednite concentrate per year.After three stages of crushing, the ore with a F80 (80% passing size) of 12.7 mm is fed to eight parallel ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones to produce a product 70% finer than 75 microns. The concentrate of rougher flotation circuit is ground; rougher tails constitute the main component of the plant final tailings. A concentrate with an average grade of 31% Cu (chalcocite and chalcopyrite) is obtained after cleaning and re-cleaning stages. Total recovery of the plant varies between 83% and 87%, depending on operating conditions and ore type."

In all known deep mixing processes the existing soil is mixed with self hardening slurry by mixing tools that rotate about a vertical axis (augers, mixing paddles). Wall panels are constructed using sets of multiple mixing tools combined into a single unit. These techniques have been developed on the principle of the rotary drilling technology. In contrast, the new Cutter Soil Mixing or CSM technique is derived from the cutter technology. The soil is loosened and broken down by cutter wheels, then mixed in-situ by the rotating cutter wheels with the self-hardening slurry - introduced into the ground between the two wheels - to form a soil-slurry mortar. The main area of application lies in the construction of cut-off and retaining walls.

In the interest of safety in underground coal mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: 1. That doors used to control ventilation (a) Shall be installed in pairs to form air locks, (b) Shall be self-closing, (c) Shall not have latches or other devices for holding them open, (d) Shall be constructed and maintained to prevent excessive air leakage through or around them, (e) Shall be fire resistant. 2. That wherever practicable the use of doors shall be limited to development openings. The Mine Safety Board is of the opinion that the best practice in coal-mine ventilation makes use of a split system employing overcasts or undercasts with doors limited as far as feasible to development openings. The distance between air-lock doors on haulageways should be sufficient to accommodate a trip or train of maximum length. Where auxiliary doors are installed to control ventilation during emergencies, they should be so placed that they can be utilized readily in case of damage to the air-lock doors.
