In making judgements on tolerable levels of risk in industry, and in all spheres of life, it needs to be understood that every action gives rise to risk. Without risk, nothing can be done. Without risk, no economy could be advanced. There is a strong tendency to emphasize the risk at work, but persons who are not working are exposed to a different set of risks. Often persons who are not working face greater risks than persons who are working. Simply, in being alive, one is exposed to the risk of an accident, the risk of contracting a disease, and an extremely diverse variety of other risks. According to the Health and Safety Executive of the UK, it is not possible to have a state of zero risk, because ?a state of zero risk does not exist?. Because zero risk is a physical impossibility, it is not possible to design for a state of zero risk in all engineering design. While the strategic target of achieving zero risk is laudable it does not provide any practical guidance to engineers as to what acceptable limits of risk should be. This causes a significant and real problem in the design for and the management of risk. Without meaningful guidelines, engineers, managers and the authorities often find themselves in disagreement. Thus, it has become essential to establish criteria for tolerable levels of risk and unacceptable levels of risk in order to design and manage engineering systems properly.

In 1980, some US cars were designed and built to metric dimensions; wine and gas were sold by the liter; and the March of Dimes Walkathon was measured in kilometers. Although the US Congress has taken a ''soft" approach to metrication, and public resistance to the idea remains strong, the use of metric units is becoming more and more widespread. As the minerals industry becomes more international in scope, US mining companies are converting to the metric system-particularly those companies with business interests overseas.

The impact of a mineral project in a developing country is evaluated in the broad context of its economy using input-output models. Minimum economic theory is used to develop simple numerical models. Sets of technical coefficients are exploited in the development of linear models of the productive element of an economy. The analysis allows assessment of the overall economic consequences of a mineral development in which issues broader in scope than financial objectives need to be incorporated in the evaluation. In part 1, the framework for the development of the input-output model is presented. The model is refined to incorporate country-specific behaviour. The increased flexibility of the enhanced semi-input-output model permits a more confident investigation of the economy-wide effects associated with a new project in the mineral sector of a developing country. One of the manifestations of the dynamically induced failures in deep coal mines is the violent ejection of coal from the ribs. A possible protection against such failures is the use of a specifically designed dynamic support system with reinforcement units having the sufficient capacity to absorb the kinetic energy of the dynamic failure and a skin support that can adequately contain the disintegrated coal. With this method of mitigation in mind, a recently introduced yielding rock bolt, trade name Roofex, has been identified (Harvey and Ozbay, 2009) as a possible energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. According to the manufacturer?s specification, the Roofex bolts can yield 300 mm (or more) displacement while holding 80 kN pull load. In order to assess the performance of this support unit in coal ribs, a series of in situ pull tests performed in two coal mines in Colorado. The results show that, under conventional pull test loading conditions, Roofex yielding bolts perform very close to their claimed specifications, thus showing a potential for their use as the main energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. Further studies are required to confirm the in situ performance of these bolts under dynamic loading conditions and also to develop a containment component for a dynamic support system for the mitigation of dynamic coal rib failures.

Similar to the case of any other business venture, the activities of mining industries are profit-oriented. Nothing will stop successful businesses in their quest for new localities to be prospected for minerals of their choice, because the useful economic life of any mine is limited. Before starting the process of land acquisition, it is important for any mining company to be able to forecast the profitability of the venture. The focus of this paper has been on the prospects of success, concerning the case of the opencast extraction of aggregates for construction. A set of 70 successful and loss-making quarries was subjected to investigation. An international company owns the quarries, which are located in seven European countries. The method of discriminate analysis provided the criteria for assessing future economic performance. The same criteria served the purpose of classifying other quarries belonging to the company.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 17,320-acre portion of the 52,143-acre Little High Rock Canyon Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-913/NV-020-008) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Humboldt and Washoe Counties, NV, about 42 miles north from Gerlach. Three areas of epithermal alteration, similar to alteration associated with disseminated gold deposits, were found in the study area. One of the areas occurs along a northeast-trending structural lineament. Southwest of the study area two gold prospects undergoing active exploration, as well JS a gold deposit being prepared for production, occur along the same lineament. The Bureau of Mines examination, however, did not find evidence for gold resources in the study area.

The Bureau of Mines measured vapor pressures of selected mixtures in the binary system SnCla-ZnC12 by the static pressure method. Equations expressing the vapor pressure) and the heat and free energy of vaporization) as functions of temperature were developed by numerical analysis based on the sigma-plot method. It was found that the vapor pressure of any SnCl2-ZnCl2 mixture) at any temperature within the range of this investigation) could be accurately calculated from the derived values for the heat and free energy of vaporization for the mixture, with a probable error of 0.01 cm Hg or less.

Since the start-up of its first Direct Reduction Module in April 1973, S1DBEC has produced over 2 million tons of prereduced iron. During this period, SIDBEC has acquired comprehensive experience in the operation of the direct reduction process and at the same time has learned to recognize the characteristics that the oxide should have to constitute an adequate feed for the process. A comparison is made as to the design and operation of the two direct reduction units now operating at Contrecoeur, Que. A description is given of a method of evaluation of a direct reduction unit, which takes into account the main process variable sand which permits comparison ofthe results on a daily basis. The paper defines the characteristics that the iron oxide and the prereduced iron pellets must have to meet the specific requirements of the direct reduction and the electric arc furnace processes. A simple model makes possible a rapid evaluation of the technical and economic effect related to the use of a given raw material. Finally, the paper outlines the advantages of prereduced iron in the steelmaking process and on the quality of the steel products.

At the Fort Knox Mine, Fairbanks, Alaska, carbon fines are generated during stripping, acid washing and kiln regeneration operations. Carbon fines are collected by a filter press because of their gold value. Samples of the carbon fines show that they consist of 20-30% carbon, 70-80% grit and 0.17-0.68 kg/t (5.0-19.9 oz/st) gold. About 80% of the gold values in the carbon fines used in this study are in a form of recrystallized free gold grains, with the balance being adsorbed gold on the carbon. High recoveries of gold and carbon were obtained in laboratory tests using froth flotation, with a high rejection of the grit.

This paper will discuss the design, construction, and performance of the support of excavation on the San Diego State University LRT Station. The vertical elements of the system include drilled secant piles and drilled soldier piles. We will discuss the geo-technical characteristics, design and construction considerations, loading criteria, construction techniques, schedule constraints, and performance of the pile and support of excavation systems. In consideration of the conference theme, there will be a discussion of the successful accomplishment of meeting the interim milestone dates of the Contract. The project team cooperatively worked to design and install approximately 1,100 drilled secant and soldier piles as well as excavate and install the balance of the support of excavation elements in such a manner as to minimize the disruption to campus students and operations.

An examination is made of some of the consequences of a magmatic gas phase developed during a late stage of differentiation of an acidic magma. Elements possessing halides with high partial pressures (Sn, Mo, W) may be removed from the magma by distillation into gas bubbles in the manner suggested by Fenner (1933). The common chalcophile elements are not affected by this mechanism, but form sulphides which may become attached to rising gas bubbles by one of three distinct mechanisms. The gas bubbles may then carry the sulphides upwards and concentrate them in some favourable locus, giving rise to an ore-forming fluid. The process would operate selectively upon different sulphides and is capable of providing an explanation of the paragenetic succession observed in ore deposits as well as other important geological criteria of ore genesis.INTRODUCTIONThere is a widespread belief among contemporary geologists that a large and important class of ore deposits is genetically related in some way·to acidic igneous rocks. This class includes the tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth type of mineralization as well as a variety of sulphide deposits.A basic problem confronting explanation of the genesis of these deposits is the manner in which trace elements which were originally widely dispersed in granitic magmas were segregated therefrom and concentrated into economic mineral deposits.The principles underlying the formation of one group of minerals deposits (pegmatites) related to granitic magmas ate reasonably well understood, largely due to the labours of Goldschmidt and his school. The purpose of this Bureau of Mines paper is to provide the mineral industry with current information on high-speed data processing and to illustrate how some of these techniques can be applied to the industry. The need for applying these techniques is generally recognized, but not much information is readily available on specific applications. This paper briefly describes high-speed data processing and reduction equipment in an effort to familiarize the reader with the functions of the equipment. A list and explanation of some of the possible applications of high-speed data processing for the mineral industry are included. A few of these applications are illustrated by the use of specific examples of existing computer programs or processing methods, including their calculation times and costs. Some of the programs cited herein were developed by the author at the University of Arizona for a Masters thesis in mining engineering. When a reference is made to a specific computer, the reference is given to make the information that is being presented as factual as possible; most of the manufacturer's equipment that is mentioned in the references was available at the University of Arizona, and no specific endorsement of that manufacturer is intended.

"An approach slab is the roadway segment that immediately follows a bridge intended to provide a smooth transition between the two elements. Some approach slabs have developed rough rideability with time due to differential settlement between the roadway embankment and the bridge. Soils in south Louisiana are generally poor and highly compressible and, therefore, pile-supported approach slabs were occasionally used. Timber piles of variable lengths are driven into the soft soils where no appreciable toe support exists. This resulted in the soils both supporting loads through shaft resistance and yet experiencing long-term consolidation settlement. Field testing and review of the records of over 120 approach slabs constructed in south Louisiana yielded the conclusion that their performance is primarily governed by negative skin friction (downdrag) imposed on the relatively short timber piles. A software (TU-DRAG) was developed to evaluate the deflection profile of a pile-supported approach slab based on its geometry and conditions of the underlying soils. It evaluates the effect of dragload considering the number and spacing of the piles at each transverse row and their variable lengths along the approach slab. TU-DRAG was utilized in the design of two transportation related projects which have been in service for more than 10 years.INTRODUCTIONThe problem of differential settlement at bridge approaches or “the bump at the bridge” has been recognized for many years. Research studies (1986, 1989, 1997, 2009 and 2013) by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) provided comprehensive evaluations of the performance of bridge approach slabs by assessing their field conditions and construction and maintenance records. Various states have also performed their own studies to investigate the performance of bridge approach slabs. The studies considered various types of structures including soil- and pile-supported approach slabs, integral bridge abutments and open-end abutments. Recommendations were provided for the design of new structures and for maintaining and repairing existing structures. Guidelines were offered regarding tolerable movements of bridges and their foundations based on measurements of vertical and horizontal movements of 580 bridges Moulton (1986). Vertical and horizontal movements greater than 102 mm (4 inches) and 51 mm (2 inches), respectively, were considered intolerable. Tolerable limits for angular distortion (differential settlement to span length) were suggested to be 1/250 and 1/200 for continuous and simple spans, respectively. It was reported that a differential settlement greater than 13 mm (0.5 inch) at the bridge interface would be sufficient to constitute a “bump” requiring mitigation."

The vapor-phase section of the Coal Hydrogenation Demonstration Plant at Louisiana, Mo., was operated for the first time in April 1949. The run lasted only 10 days because of time limitation (pending plant dedication in May) and the small amount of charging stock available. The primary purpose of the operation was to break in and determine the operability of the equipment and to supplement the operators' classroom training with actual practice by operating the plant under mild conditions. A secondary aim was to obtain data on the hydrogenation of petroleum oil and lignite tar distillate at approximately 10,000 p.s.i. while making gasoline and Diesel fuel oil. Although the operations were carried out under conditions considerably below those used in the plant design, a great deal of experience and data was obtained. As it is not feasible at this time to conduct further vapor-phase operations on similar stocks, this report has been prepared to present and summarize the data obtained through this operation.

Cylindrical fatigue specimens of OFHC* copper were subjected to alternating torsion while under axial tension. The superimposed tension strongly influenced the fatigue life of the specimens as well as causing characteristic changes in the structure of the fissures that form and develop throughout the life of the specimen. A further effect of the superimposed tension is a continuous extension of the specimen throughout its life in a manner formally similar to creep at elevated temperatures. RECENTLY, studies of the structural changes leading to fracture of metals by fatigue have been made by a technique which reveals, in section, the lattice distortion arising from slip movements inside the metal and the disturbances built up by these slip movements at the metal surface.1'2 According to this approach, fatigue develops as follows: a) fine slip movements concentrate in bands, producing little strain-hardening and thus permitting abnormal totals of plastic strain before fracture and, therefore, abnormal amounts of lattice distortion along each slip band; b) both forward and backward slip movements occur in each band which, according to their distribution across the band, may build up surface disturbances that include sharp notches; c) these notches early in the life of a specimen penetrate the distorted slip zones and transform them into deep, fine fissures; d) the fissures on continued cycling locally saturate the metal and cause local collapse in the form of a microcrack. The mineral matter has been isolated from a selection of Australian bituminous coals using low temperature (radio-frequency) oxidation or hydrogen peroxidation techniques and the species present identified by x-raydiffraction. Quartz, kaolinite, and a range of mixed layer clay minerals are the dominant constituents of the coals studied, with carbonate, sulphate, and phosphate minerals abundant in some samples. The clay bands thatoccur within these coal seams contain similar mineral assemblages to the coals themselves, but the lutites that form the inter-seam strata have a markedly different mineralogy, characterized by abundant quartz andillite and a low kaolinite content.The kaolinite is thought to have formed chiefly by interaction of silica and alumina in the waters of the coal swamp, aided by the catalytic action of organic acids, while most of the other clay minerals are probablydetrital. The absence of illite from Australian coals is not fully understood, but it may reflect the action of organic acids on the detritus in the swamp, coupled with deposition in freshwater rather thanmarine conditions. Pyrite, although present in some coal samples when fresh, may undergo oxidation during storage to form a number of sulphate minerals, some of which may interact with any calcite present toform gypsum.The mineral matter assemblage in the coal determines to a great extent the fusion characteristics of the ash.Unless abundant carbonates are present, coals with kaolinite-rich assemblages have a very refractory ash, while those rich in chlorite or montmorillonite have ash fusion temperatures between 1000 and 1300°C. Theinfluence of the minerals on coal preparation and coking properties is also brieflY discussed, as well as the potential of mineral matter studies in coal seam correlation.

Experimental animal studies comparing asbestos and non-asbestos varieties of tremolite indicate tremolite asbestos is markedly more carcinogenic. By direct analogy, the differences in carcinogenicity between tremolite asbestos and non-asbestos prismatic tremolite should be the same for the other types of amphibole that also crystallize in the asbestos and non-asbestos habits. The earliest of the experiment animal studies, done more than 25 years ago, have design limitations by modern standards including the use of injection or surgical implantation as the route of administration rather than the more relevant route of inhalation. However, the differences in the carcinogenicity of amphibole asbestos and non-asbestos amphiboles are sufficiently large to be clearly discernable even with the study limitations. Together with later studies on these and related minerals, there is strong evidence of a much lower hazard associated with the shorter, thicker fibers of the non-asbestos amphiboles, than is found for the asbestos analogues of the same mineral. It is possible that the non-asbestos amphiboles are no more hazardous than other silicate minerals widely considered nuisance dusts. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. La planta de lixiviación, extracción por solventes y electrodeposición (L-SX-EW) de Southern Perú es una operación hidrometalúrgica dedicada a la lixiviación ácido – bacteriana de los botaderos de mineral de baja ley de la Mina Toquepala, para la producción de cobre catódico de la más alta pureza. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe la evolución del sistema de control y supervisión de esta planta minera en Cuajone. Para ello, dicha planta debe tener una actualización constante de sus sistemas de control y ser capaz de cambiar con la velocidad a la que avanza la tecnología de Control de Procesos. Asimismo, debe contar con personal calificado que permita el desarrollo y modernización de los sistemas sea continuo y no dependa solo de expansiones y ampliaciones ejecutadas por especialistas externos. De forma que este software de supervisión, no solamente considera la capacidad de operar la planta, si no debe ser una ayuda tanto para el operador como para brindar información en la correcta toma de decisiones.

In the Ngakuru area, zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lake sediments and ignimbrites. The deposits are associated with sinters, hydrothermal eruption breccias, and quartz-adularia altered fault breccias: all indicators of a shallow epithermal environment. Several of the deposits are adjacent to epithermal gold prospects. Zeolites are most abundant in lacustrine tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation, a 100-300 m thick sequence of siltstone, tuff, diatomite, sandstone and conglomerate. The formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 270 Ka, and is unconformably overlain by alluvial sands and gravels which are younger than 20 Ka. Individual zeolite deposits contain 30-80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified tuff beds. The tuff beds are locally overlain by diatomite. The tuffs are composed mainly of glass shards and pumice clasts, with minor volcanic plagioclase, quartz and biotite crystals. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, K-feldspar and smectite are also present. The distribution of the Ngakuru Formation is controlled by northeast trending normal faults, which separate it into the Ngakuru and Guthrie grabens. A silicified (quartz-adularia altered) hydrothermal breccia along one of the fault zones suggests that the faults acted as feeders for heated water that caused the deposition of the zeolite minerals. Some of the zeolite deposits are adjacent to sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias. The location of the sinter about 20 m above one deposit indicates that the zeolites were formed at a depth of 20 to 70 m below the paleosurface. The hydrothermal eruption breccias contain clasts of altered ignimbrite, which contain geochemically anomalous gold and silver values. By analogy with their occurrence in active geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, mordenite and clinoptilolite in the Ngakuru deposits probably formed at temperatures of 60-150oC from near-neutral pH waters as a result of interaction with glass-rich tuff beds. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits are therefore interpreted as shallow hydrothermal alteration zones within larger epithermal gold-bearing systems.
