INTRODUCTION When divers discovered that sections of a tunnel housing the pipeline that conveys wastewater from the Charleston Peninsula to the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Facility had caved in, the Charleston Commissioners of Public Works(CPW) moved quickly to determine a long term solution for the city’s collection system, immediately focusing on the Ashley River sewer tunnel along the western boundary of the peninsula. Working with the Charleston community, as well as federal, state, and local officials, CPW developed a fast track yet long life design that can be used as a model for underground construction of tunnels in urban areas. The paper that follows summarizes key aspects of the Ashley River sewer tunnel project. HISTORICAL CHARLESTON Charleston, South Carolina is a culturally significant and historic city that was originally settled in 1670. There are over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places within the Charleston area. Additionally, the first shots of the American Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in the Charleston Harbor in 1861. As one can imagine, tourism generates significant business for the area with over 1.5 million people visiting Charleston each year. No project, especially one that requires digging, is done within the old city on the Charleston peninsula without careful planning. Many precautions are necessary to prevent damage or disruption to the historical properties. The Ashley River sewer tunnel project is exclusively in the old city. A lot of work was done during the design phase to minimize the impact to historical properties. Some of this work included: an archeological study (where pre-digs were monitored at all shaft sites by an archeologist); a building/structure assessment study (where structures near a shaft site were completely surveyed and cataloged); and an environmental study.

Mechanization has been at the core of productivity improvements since the industrial revolution. During the past 20 years, mining has derived spectacular progress from mechanization. In the future, however, mechanization alone will not be enough. In the next few decades, automation will bring about new generations of highly productive and safe machines, with low operating costs. Increased use of new and better technology is generally accepted as the prime factor capable of closing the productivity gap. The productivity gap is the difference between inflation and metal prices. The three S-curves in Fig. I represent the evolution of technology in general, and mining in particular. TI represents incremental changes. the dominant sort of technology changes in the mining industry: - Better drills, electric hydraulic drills vs. pneumatic drills, the drilling rate is twice as fast. - Better steel and bits, to accommodate the higher performance drills. - Improved chemical explosives. - Bigger trucks in open pits.

Pachuca tanks are extensively used for the cyanide leaching of gold and the carbonate leaching of uranium, processes in which oxygen mass transfer plays a very important role. Experiments were carried out to clarify the effect of design and operating parameters on oxygen mass transfer. Parameters such as the ratio of tank height to tank diameter, the ratio of draught-tube diameter to tank diameter and the tank design were found not to influence oxygen mass transfer. Results also showed that equal superficial gas velocities may be used as a criterion for scaling up oxygen mass transfer in both full-centre-column and free-air-lift Pachuca tanks with clear water. A volume-averaged, volumetric gas-liquid mass-transfer coefficient (k'av) was used to characterise oxygen mass transfer in full-centre-column tanks. The axial dispersion model was used to determine k'av. The resulting model used only tank geometry and air flow rate as inputs for the prediction of k'av in industrial-scale tanks. Predictions from the model show clearly that "local" mass-transfer coefficients, measured at one or two locations, may not adequately represent gas-liquid mass transfer in industrial tanks. The pile foundation of Sutong bridge pylons is an extra large pile foundation. The length of piles is 115m, and the diameter of the piles is 2.5-2.8m. Since the traditional design method may not determine the settlement and capacity reasonably for such a large pile foundation, the finite element method is used to study stress and deformation of the foundation. The interface element is set to simulate the possible slide between piles and soil layers. The hyperbolic model is taken for soils. Parameters are determined from triaxial test first, and then modified by back analysis on basis of in-situ loading test. The computation results show that the axial force of piles changes with the location of the pile. Outer piles support greater axial force and also friction. The settlement will not be greater than 26cm. The stress and deformation of the pile cap, the abutment, are obtained too. The whole foundation is safe.

President Lien presented Mrs. Holmes with the first of speaker appreciation gifts presented by his firm Amax Coal West, Inc. These were books by Rand-McNally entitled The Executive Golfer Guide. Following the coffee break, Clark Moseley presented the first annual Institute Safety Achievement Awards for the safest mines in the eight member state region. The awards were based on: 1. Ore sorting is a high capacity, low cost method of pre concentrating ores and in some cases of producing a marketable concentrate. In most cases it is applied to run of mine material, immediately after primary crushing and screening in sizes ranging from 10 mm to 150 mm. Recent developments in bulk sorting of friable uranium deposits have resulted in machines capable of handling fine materials with sensing and separation being achieved on a zone by zone basis. Modern ore sorting machines rely on the synchronous operation of four internal subsystems, feed presentation, sensing, data processing and separation. A variety of different sub systems is available which can be combined in various forms to produce sorters capable of handling a wide variety of mineral types. The benefits in using ore sorting cover a wide range of situations and are applicable to both established mines as well as new mining ventures. Reduced operating costs, increased productivity, capital savings, energy and resource conservation and environmental issues are all part of the reason why ore sorting is finding rapid acceptance in today's mining industry. The suitability of different ore types for pre-concentration using anyone of the variety of ore sorting systems can be quickly established using computer based techniques which require only small samples of the materials under investigation.

This paper reports the results of a study to determine the effect of process control agent (PCA) on the characteristics of Ti-Mg powders during milling. It has been shown that a 2% increase in PCA content leads to up to a 40% increase in yield of the milled powder but reduces the kinetics of the mechanical alloying process. The introduction of 4% PCA decreases the mean powder particle size by up to 30%, whereas 6% PCA increases the mean particle size by up to 230%. The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on a flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process as part of its goal of minimizing the undesirable environmental impacts associated with sulfur dioxide (S02)-bearing waste gases. This FGD process, referred to as the modified citrate process, involves absorption of S02 in a buffered citric acid solution. The absorbed S02 is subsequently stripped from the solution using steam, which regenerates the solution and produces a wet S02 product. This product can be further processed to make sulfuric acid or liquid S02. Economic evaluations showed the process to be expensive when the stripper was operated at or near ambient pressures because of the large amounts of steam required for solution regeneration. Research was directed at reducing steam consumption in the stripper. The effect of stripper pressure on steam consumption was investigated. A process research unit (PRU) was operated with the stripper pressurized in the range of 5 to 150 psig. Test results showed that steam consumption decreased with increased stripper pressure. For example, when operating the PRU stripper at 150 psig, 4.1 grams of steam per gram of S02 was required to remove 90 pct of the S02 from a 1.0-vol-pct-S02 gas. This compares to 7.1 grams of steam per gram of S02 required for 90-pct S02 recovery at 5 psig.

The 30th annual short course ?Grouting Fundamentals and Current Practice? was held at the Colorado School of Mines, June 22-26, 2009. The field demonstration portion of the course was conducted June 25, at Hayward Baker, Inc.?s yard in Broomfield, CO. The full-scale field demonstration annually presents many different types of drilling equipment being operated as well as various grouting methods being performed under different field conditions. As part of the field demonstration, the class is shown the proportioning, mixing, testing and injection of various cement grout mixes into sand columns under controlled and measured conditions. These sand column demonstrations have been conducted under controlled and measured conditions each year since 1999 as part of the short course. The sand column demonstrations were conducted prior to 1999, but with less quality control and minimal record keeping of the proportioning, mixing, testing, injection pressures and the final permeation results. The goal of the sand column demonstration is to show the students the effect of the water cement ratio and the use of admixture as well as the fineness of the cement, portland versus ultrafine, used has on the engineering properties of the grout and the grout?s vertical permeation through the sand. Test results for the demonstrations conducted in 1999 and for two separate demonstrations, one at the grout course and one at Geo Denver, conducted in 2000 were published in the 2001 proceedings of the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) (Henn et al. 2001). The test results for the 2002 and the 2003 demonstrations were published in the 2005 proceeding of the RETC (Henn et al. 2005).

The ever-increasing depth of mineral extraction presents a challenging environment for hard-rock underground mines. High in situ stresses and associated seismicity with potential rockburst hazards are the major decisive factors contributing to the choice of a ground support regime. Conventional ground support systems, designed primarily for static loads, are not always capable of providing safe working conditions for underground personnel in seismically active mines. Systems specifically developed to resist dynamic loading and allowing for larger deformations are therefore preferred alternatives. High-tensile chain-link mesh has a proven record of successful use in open cut operations in various rockfall barrier installations due to its high energy absorption capacity. It has also been used in underground operations in various parts of the world. Its application in South African underground mining, however, is limited due to the high labour intensity. This paper describes a method of mechanized installation of a chain-link mesh as evaluation at Gold Fields' South Deep Gold mine situated some 45 km south-west of Johannesburg. A purpose-built mechanized roll mesh handler, developed in Australia, was used in this trial. The handler is compatible with all standard multi-boom underground drill rigs and is operated utilizing the hydraulic circuit normally used for the feed arrangement. A number of key performance indicators have been specified as success criteria by Gold Fields: ? A 30% faster installation compared to the conventional methodology ? The mesh should sustain any blast damage when applied to the blasting face ? No unravelling of the mesh when cut ? No failure of mesh under normal conditions ? Reliability of the MESHA® installation handler (availability >90% ? Compatibility of the MESHA® installation handler with AC 282 boomers. Although the energy-absorbing mesh combined with yielding rockbolts is a ground support system of choice for rockburst-prone conditions, the operational upsides recognized during the trial imply that this product can also be competitively used in less demanding ground conditions where weld mesh or shotcrete are customarily used as a primary surface support.

We describe a new software product designed for the net present value optimization of multi-open-pit blended ore operations in which it is desired and/or necessary to dump some or all of the waste rock produced in the course of operations back into the voids created in the process of ore extraction. The software product simultaneously decides over the entire life-of-mine which material to mine in which year, once mined what to do with it, and where to put that material which it has decided to waste, all subject to annual blend and capacity constraints.

When the Mining Bill came before the Victorian Legislature not so many months ago, the question arose whether mining managers required education, and to what extent. Some members of the House expressed themselves in a way which appeared to leave the impression that mining managers would be all the better if they were not brought up in a scientific school.To try and prove what we owe to science I will give a short history of colonial mining from the earlier period to the present time and compare results.I believe I am right in saying that South Australia is the pioneer colony in mining and to her belongs the credit of not dnly being the first mining colony, but also that her beginning turned out so successful, as the history of the Burra Burra copper mine will testify. At about the same time a little galena mining was carried on nearer to Adelaide, but as this did not prove a success and was only worked by tributing parties, little notice was taken of it.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the recent developments in the heap leaching of gold ores with dilute cyanide solutions and the recovery of gold and associated silver from the pregnant effluents by a carbon adsorption-desorption method. Mineralogical considerations, experimental work, field studies, and commercial operations are described. Also presented are recent process advances developed by the Bureau, including the application of (1) alcohol additives to the conventional hot alkaline cyanide strip solution to enhance gold desorption from precious metal-laden activated carbon, and (2) Na2S precipitation of the silver from geld-silver cyanide solutions as a means of reducing the inventory of carbon required for precious-metal adsorption from heap leach effluents and for the production of low-silver bullion from activated carbon stripping solutions.

"The importance of coherent material balance results has long been recognized by mining and metallurgical companies. Although this is still true nowadays, various stakeholders are increasingly concerned about the origin and the accuracy of the reported numbers. The last decade has shown that most metallurgical accounting concerns can be addressed by making two important changes to plant performance monitoring practices. First, introducing data redundancy into the metal balance procedure allows the estimation of measurement errors. Second, the migration from spreadsheet-based to relational database based systems brings transparency, data integrity, traceability and auditability into metallurgical accounting. Relational databases also facilitate the production of reports that metallurgical accountants must issue routinely. Recognizing the caveats of the spreadsheet-based metal accounting method they had been applying for years, Strathcona decided to switch to a commercial relational database system in 2008. For the most part, the migration was seamless. Some challenges were raised but they could all be overcome and outweighed by benefits gained from day-to-day utilization of the system.INTRODUCTION Metal accounting (Morrison, 2008) has always been essential to high-quality corporate governance of mining and metallurgical companies. Although the importance of coherent material balance results has long been recognized, various stakeholders are increasingly inquisitive about how the reported numbers were obtained and how much accuracy can be attributed to them. This accrued scrutiny is obviously no stranger to the corporate governance tightening that happened through the years in response to outrageous accounting scandals. It is also in continuity with securities laws (such as NI-43-101 in Canada) that were passed to protect the public from other market fraud. Recognizing the importance of spotless metal accounting in their reports to the public, a group of global mining companies gave AMIRA International the mandate of developing a set of rigorous yet practical metal accounting guidelines for the mining and metallurgical industry. The AMIRA P754 project was launched in 2004 and the first version of the resulting Code of Practice was released the following year. Since then, the Code was reviewed twice and revised releases were issued (AMIRA, 2007). While some parts of these guidelines are in continuity with current commonplace practices, other parts recommend changes to inherited practices that may be significant. For example, they highlight the importance of data redundancy (Lachance & Flament, 2011) which in many operations is either already available but unexploited or achievable with reasonable efforts. These guidelines also stress the importance of state-of-the-art metal accounting systems, such as those based on relational databases, which are secure and entirely auditable by a Qualified Person. Because most spreadsheet software packages allow data and formulae to be modified at any time, without a trace and anonymously, they do not meet these requirements."

Critical decisions in iron ore project evaluation and production are based on global and local spatial estimates of primary mineral deposit properties (such as in situ geochemical grades) and geometallurgical responses (such as screened, washed or concentrated product yields and grades), which are derived from limited sample data. These spatial estimates are typically made using classical geostatistical techniques, which fundamentally assume that the attributes of interest behave additively. This assumption is generally appropriate for æprimaryÆ variables but æresponseÆ variables may behave non-additively and therefore their direct linear estimates may be biased.In this paper an existing additivity testing mechanism is used to quantify the bias resulting from direct linear estimation of a non-additive iron ore attribute. Data from a magnetite project are used to determine the circumstances under which such biases may be of material impact. The implications for iron ore resource estimation, geometallurgical modelling and grade control are outlined and discussed.CITATION:Cornah, A J, 2013. The object of this investigation is to determine the field for the use of detachable bits in metal mines of the United States by correlating the data developed through the experience of mines using these bits. Most of the metal-mining districts in the Middle Western and Eastern States already have been visited. The purpose of the present circular is to define the problem and to discuss the factors that must be considered in order to determine, under different operating conditions, the advantages and disadvantages of this type of bit. Some of the data obtained to date are presented to emphasize points made in the discussion. It is hoped that, as the study progresses, a great many data on drilling will become available. It is evident that since in some cases these data will be confidential they cannot, therefore, be published except as they may be included in average figures covering several different mines. Some data already secured are of this nature, Although considerable information on drilling operations has been gathered at different mines, there were only a few instances in which there were available complete data on all the factors entering into the total cost of drilling with detachable bits and with conventional bits on regular drill steel.

Minor subsidence damage to the Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School building and grounds near Burgettstown, Washington County, Pennsylvania, prompted an investigation of the site in early 1985 by the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. The investigation determined that subsidence over an abandoned coal mine was occurring and that additional damaging subsidence would occur if reclamation measures were not taken. A Pittsburgh Coal Seam Mine which was abandoned in the 1920's underlies the school at a depth of sixty-five (65) feet. This sixty-five foot section is comprised of five (5) feet of unconsolidated overburden and sixty (60) feet of thinly bedded, highly fractured shale. Approximately five and one-half (5-1/2) feet of Pittsburgh Coal was extracted at the school site. A thin shale binder and one (1) to one and one-half (1-1/2) feet of roof coal were left in place. Within the Contractor's Underground Working Area (See Figure 1) approximately thirty (30) percent of the coal was extracted. It appears that the mine was just being developed in the vicinity of the school when it was abandoned for no known reason. Other nearby portions of the mine show extraction approaching sixty-five (65) percent.

"SGS Minerals Services (Lakefield, Ontario site) has conducted a number of developmental and pilot programs that examined methods for the beneficiation, extraction and recovery of lithium from a variety of spodumene containing hard rock sources. An overview of the beneficiation programs is presented separately by Aghamirian, Mohns, Grammatikopoulos, Imeson & Pearse (2011). The focus of this discussion will be the hydrometallurgical steps involved in producing a high grade lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) sample from the spodumene concentrate. SGS has applied the standard Li2CO3 hydrometallurgical flow sheet to a number of spodumene concentrates and has determined that all of these samples respond in a similar manner to the process and produce a final product having a Li2CO3 grade of >99.5%. The standard process is sufficiently robust to accommodate the observed variability in the concentrates that have been tested. Advantage of one spodumene deposit over another will thus be gained through process optimization and innovation. Optimization at the beneficiation stage and at the hydrometallurgical stage must be considered. Some aspects of the process optimization of the hydrometallurgical flow sheet will be presented.INTRODUCTION The current activity in the exploration, development, and mining of lithium based minerals is due in large part to the key role that this metal plays in the rechargeable battery industry (U.S. Geological Survey, 2011). Lithium battery technologies are widely applied in a range of portable electronic consumer products. The expanding development and production of hybrid and fully electric vehicles has contributed to the increased interest in finding and developing new lithium sources in order to meet the expected demand from the lithium battery industry. Lithium may be sourced from continental brines (sub-surface salars), hard rock minerals (pegmatite, spodumene), hectorite clay deposits, geothermal brines and oilfield brines. Currently the majority of the lithium products are produced from Li brines. The four major lithium producing countries are Chile, Australia, China, and Argentina (U.S. Geological Survey, 2009; Roskill, 2009). These countries accounted for 97.6% of the total lithium produced in 2010."

A laboratory investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to study the magnetic characteristics and to measure the magnetic susceptibility of the mineral siderite. All susceptibility measurements were made by the method of Gouy on powdered samples and at room temperature. Specific susceptibilities of samples from 15 different locations, domestic and foreign, were determined. Values ranged from 66 to 103 (10-6) cgs electromagnetic units. The relation of susceptibility to mineral composition is discussed in this report. The specific susceptibilities of 76 minerals are tabulated in an appendix.

"IntroductionHydraulics has been considered a science for thousands of years. Applications included water wheels, dam; and slice gates but today the term ""hydraulics"" commonly refers to ""power hydraulics"" in which fluid is used under controlled pressure to do work. The mining industry employee’s hydraulics in practically every aspect of its operations, on such equipment as trucks, front end loaders, LHD units, crushers and hydrostroke feeders. The many benefits of hydraulic drives such as ease of variable speed control, high power: weight ratio low envelope size of hydraulic actuators and ease of maintenance have been extensively developed in the pulp and paper, chemical, steel, and other basic industries, but until quite recently, concentrator operators have not taken advantage of the versatile methods of power transmission offered by hydraulic systems.After some preliminary testing at the Lynn Lake concentrator Sherritt Cordon Mines Limited installed several hydraulic system; at their Fox Mine concentrator to drive slurry pumps and conveyors. The systems used at Fox and the systems which will be installed at the Ruttan concentrator are briefly described in this paper. Since acceptance is based mainly on understanding a few basic principles of hydraulics system; including pumps, motors, circuitry and central methods are also presented in the paper.PRINCIPLES OF POWER HYDRAULICSBasicsHydraulic systems provide an uncomplicated, versatile means of power transmission. The basic system is quite simple. It consists of five main elements, as shown in Figure 1, which are:1. Prime Mover - generally an electric motor.2. Hydraulic Pump - fixed or variable positive displacement type such as a piston or vane p.mp which displaces a constant amount of fluid for ead1 revolution - this unit converts mechanical energy of the prime mover into fluid energy.3.
