L. Alan Weakly, member SME, is a senior staff engineer, Exxon Co. Weakly chaired a Mining Engineering committee formed to solicit materials for six planned "personal skills" articles, to be used in ME this year. What follows are Weakly's introductory comments to the series. Upon graduation from college several years ago, I thought that I was sufficiently prepared to embark in my chosen profession. A short time later I realized that several years of on-the-job training was going to be required before I could use my technical training effectively. It never occurred to me that, professionally, I was seriously lacking in any other skills. My spelling could use a little upgrading, but this was not a serious deficiency. I have been very fortunate to have had two employers that recognized that their engineering professionals did lack other skills and made every effort to give them training to correct these deficiencies. The skills I am referring to are those in administration and interpersonal relationships. Most mining engineers and geologists receive very little, if any, college training in these areas. In addition, many companies do not provide this training and many mining engineers and geologists are unaware of their deficiencies. It is for this reason the subject of personal skills development is being introduced in Mining Engineering. The mining engineer or geologist can pursue one of two basic career directions, managerial or technical. In today's technically sophisticated society and highly competitive business climate, both orientations require administrative and interpersonal skills. Most of us are technically qualified and we continue to upgrade our technical skills. But many studies indicate that we, as a group, are significantly weaker in administrative and interpersonal skills than other professional groups. In addition, these studies indicate that engineers, in general, take longer to reach managerial levels and fewer do so. This series in Mining Engineering, then, should help readers strengthen and broaden their professional capabilities. In all industries, including mining and petroleum, economic analysis of potential investment projects is done to select the projects that will give maximum future value from the investment of available capital. Rather than looking directly at the future values to be generated by investing capital in alternate ways for economic decisions, evaluators usually use either rate of return, present value, annual value, a profit to investment ratio, or various break even analysis results to reach economic analysis decisions in evaluating alternative investments. Alternative economic evaluation techniques are used in industry to properly analyze the economic potential of various investment projects. "Discounted Cash Flow" analysis is the phrase commonly used to describe these techniques. Whether you want to analyze projects in mineral, petroleum, real estate, refining, pipe-line transportation, or any other industry, proper application of discounted cash flow analysis techniques enables you to fairly compare the economic potential of alternative projects as well or better than you can using any other project evaluation approaches. It should be pointed out that investment analysis generally involves more than economic analysis. Financial and intangible considerations sometimes are as important or more important to investment decision-making than economic considerations. Economic analysis refers to evaluation of the profit generating potential of projects, that is selecting which alternative projects will generate maximum future value possible from available investment capital. Financial analysis, on the other hand, relates to analysis of where money is going to come from to finance various projects. Regardless of the economic potential of a project, if financial analysis indicates that we cannot finance the project, it likely will be shelved for financial reasons even though it may be economically satisfactory. Many evaluators use the terms "economic analysis" and "financial analysis" interchangeably, but this author considers that to be undesirable. This paper describing the mining practices at the Ray mines at Ray, Arizona, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, method and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. At the present time (1929) all mineral Production of the Ray district comes from the Ray Mines of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. The ore body is being worked from two shafts, designated as No. 1 and No. 2. An undercut block-caving method of mining is used, variations of which are employed to fit different conditions. The present method has been developed by making improvements as experience was gained or when conditions changed. Refinements in practice are continually being made. The Ray mine was the first in the Southwest to use a caving system of mining on a large scale.

"DEFINITION OF VISCOSITYViscosity has been defined as the resistance experienced by one portion of a liquid moving over another portion, such as one molecular plane moving over an adjacent plane. A measure of viscosity is the force required to keep one plane in motion at Unit velocity, the other plane being considered stationary. Figure 1 illustrates the general idea that the surface friction between two adjacent areas will be greater the larger the molecules. Therefore it may be assumed that viscosity will be increased by molecular association or agglomeration, and likewise dissociation rill decrease viscosity. According to Maxwell (1)6 the unit of viscosity, the poise, is the tangential force per square centimeter of area of either of two horizontal planes 1 centimeter apart, one of which is fixed while the other moves with unit velocity, the space between being filled with viscous liquid of unit viscosity.The need for a satisfactory apparatus and experimental procedure for the determination of viscosity of high-melting materials at temperatures corresponding to those in pig-iron and steel making has been recognized during the past few decades. The condition of the slag during the smelting and refining periods in the iron- and steel-making processes exerts an important influence on the metal product obtained, this slag condition really meaning the state of viscosity or, vice versa, fluidity, which the slag attains under certain conditions."

Brief descriptions of several types of unit pulverizeI' are given and the functioning of the components that crush, carry, dry and classify the coal is considered. A distinction is drawn between pulverizers which crush particle beds and those .operating by free-crushing. The overall performance of pulverijlers is considered in terms of correlations between mill variables, coal grindability, abrasiveness, moisture and particle size. Brief discussioiJ. of the influence of pulverized fuel quality on boiler operation and of pulverizing costs concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONModern coal pulverizers function as carriers of materials and as crushers, as dryers and as size classification machines and, thus, the unit pulverizer comprises. several components that normally function as separate apparatus. The controls of the unit pulverizer must have sufficient flexibility to accommodate rapid variations of boiler load or coal quality. Further, the machine must be robust, yet easy to maintain preferably at annual intervals-so that maintenance costs are small (for coal is a relatively cheap material). Usually, the full load of a modern pulverized-fuel fired boiler can be raised with one pulverizer off-line. All coals, from anthracites to brown coal, may be prepared as pulverized fuel (hereafter P.F.) .Each pulverizer of a direct-fired boiler has, broadly, to supply the burners with coal powdered so that about 80 per cent passes a 200 B.S. sieve and only a small proportion, less than about 10 per cent, remains on the 100 B.S. sieve. The classification processes must prevent any appreciable proportion of coarse particles in the P.F. and yet not return excessive proportions of "finished" fines. Mineral Resource Throughput Management is based on the extraction of the maximum potential value from an ore reserve with the emphasis to generate maximum ROI and ROR (return on reserve). A steel producing company in India implemented MRTM to significantly improve their ROI and ROR. The value chain of this company consists of their own iron ore and coal mines, ore washing plants, sinter plants, steel plants, and sales and marketing division. The target for the mines was to produce at a stable and predictable rate and at specific quality requirements. These requirements were set to improve productivity and ROI of the steel plant. The implementation constituted the alignment of the reserve potential, total production chain, human resources and management culture at the mines with the requirements of the steel plant. Many typical mining practices were challenged and changed. Production targets regarding lump vs. fines ratio, consistent product tons, quality targets such as Fe, Al content and moist, and standard deviation on the quality targets were not achieved. A reverse distribution model with release mechanisms to satisfy the demand were developed and implemented at the mines. A stable and predictable flow of mine product with quality standards well within the required standard deviation targets were achieved. The contribution from the mines to significantly improve the Net Profit, ROI and ROR of the company were reached.

A combination of novel and æclassicÆ methods, namely electric pulse disaggregation (EPD), hydroseparation (HS), preparation of monolayer polished sections, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) was employed to study ores from platinum pipes (Bushveld Complex, South Africa), pristine PGE mineralisation of the Main Sulfide Zone (Great Dyke, Zimbabwe), as well as ancient and modern gold/PGM placer deposits. It is shown here that the EPD technique liberates mineral grains of interest without any visible destruction allowing the study and analysis of individual rock-forming and ore minerals, in our case especially platinum-group minerals. The HS method is an effective tool in concentrating heavy minerals by factors up to 10 000 fold. As near-total recovery of grains >10 ¦m is achieved, the nugget effect can be overcome also in case of limited availability of samples (drill core, museum specimens). The MLA technique is a fast tool to detect and characterise mineral phases in ores and ore processing products. Many mineralogical parameters of individual grains and mineral assemblages can be deducted and documented. The results show that the techniques employed, either on their own or in combination, provide a wide range of additional information especially on platinum ores which is beneficial to both the researcher and the metallurgist.

The introduction of roof bolts to Phalen Colliery in the Sydney Coalfield, Nova Scotia (annual output of 2Mt) has been successfully implemented in maingate and tailgate entries over the last four years. Monitoring of the roof bolted areas continues to be an integral part of the quality control program as the results are utilized to maintain safety and to aid in long-term design strategies. Although all gateroads in the Phalen Colliery have converted to roof bolts as their primary means of support, the majority of intersections which intersect the main slopes remain supported by large steel structures. Several intersections within the Phalen Colliery were monitored as they were created by the mining process. A comparison is made between intersections supported with only traditional 6.4 to 6.7 m steel structure and intersections supported by 2.44 m fully resin encapsulated roof bolts in conjunction with 7.6 m fully cement grouted cable bolts. Detailed monitoring was conducted using CA NM ET's intrinsically safe sonic probe extensometer datalogger which has the ability to read up to sixteen probes simultaneously at programmed intervals. The density of the data from the datalogger has allowed a better understanding of the deformation of cable bolted intersections than was possible with manual monitoring. Test results have helped mine operators to design safer cable bolted intersections.

The purpose of this report is to describe the work accomplished by Mine Safety Appliances Company under Contract No. H0110845. This contract required the design, installation and testing of a permissible mine surveillance and communication system for the USBM Bruceton experimental mine facility. While much of the design and operational detail of this system can be drawn from the instruction manuals delivered with the equipment, some of it will be repeated here in Volume I for the sake of clarity, but the principal objective will be to report on overall system and subsystem performance and to suggest design alternatives for future consideration. Details of the overall system design will be found in Volume II of this report.

For several years considerable activity has been devoted to economic and social factors affecting California metal-mining operations as they relate to accidents and their cost. The reason for this intense interest is that accidents cost this industry annually over $1100,000 in industrial insurance premiums for mines insured by insurance carriers only; during 1924-32, inclusive, they amounted to $3,616,9115. There are several reasons for this high cost, the most important of w rich are the consistently .high frequency and severity rates of injuries occurring in the industry. Coordination of effort, appreciation of a mutual problem, and widespread education are essential if accidents and their cost are to be reduced.

Process Design and Change Management for Successful Deployment of Technology in Mining Over the last 30 years Canada has been successful in developing but not deploying hardrockmining automation. Our opinion is that the current lack of R&D investment and implementation capacity places Canada at risk as a future global mining leader A white elephant A burdensome possession; creating more trouble than it is worth. White (albino) elephants were regarded as holy in ancient times in Thailand and other Asian countries. Keeping a white elephant was a very expensive undertaking, since the owner had to provide the elephant with special food and provide access for people who wanted to worship it. If a Thai King became dissatisfied with a subordinate, he would give him a white elephant. The gift would, in most cases, ruin the recipient.

An extensive series of tests was carried out on a ball mill-rake classifier circuit in the New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. concentrator. The data were used to develop a mathematical model of the operation of a rake classifier and this model has been used in the simulation of the performance of a ball mill-rake classifier circuit on a digital computer. As a result of this simulation it has been possible to develop a technique for the optimization and control of a circuit which includes these units.

The Bureau of Mines studied methods for recovering unreacted titanium minerals and petroleum coke from titanium chlorination plant wastes prior to neutralization treatment with lime. The objective was to recover valuable raw materials and to reduce the amount of waste materials that must be treated for disposal. Samples of solid wastes were physically beneficiated by gravity concentration (tabling) to recover titanium minerals containing 69.0 to 92.4 wt-pct Ti02 and by selective carbon flotation to recover petroleum coke containing 94.0 to 96.8 wt-pct C. Laboratory data indicate that the recovered titanium mineral would decrease the amount of solid waste to be disposed of from 32.8 to 53.9 wt-pct. The recovery of coke would further decrease the amount by additional 32.9 wt-pct. Preliminary tests conducted on recovering vanadium, chromium, and columbium from liquors obtained by leaching chlorination residues also have shown that (1) 97 pct of the vanadium was extracted from leach liquors in a two-stage solvent ex-traction procedure and (2) 58 pct of the columbium and 40 pct of the chromium were separated from the leach liquors by an ion exchange technique using a strong acid resin.

Recent work on decoppering lead is reviewed CUS is formed rapidly even from dilute solutions of copper in lead. The mechanism of decoppering is discussed and an explanation for the retention of metals such as silver in lead is advanced. As decoppering tin appears to be an analogous process, the, Cu-Sn-S system is studied at 300°C.. CuS, which is not an equilibrium product, is found m decoppermg drosses. In the removal of nickel from lead, Ni3Pb2S2 is formed; preliminary measurements show the equilibrium nickel content to be greater than that obtained by stirring in sulphur. Decoppering bIsmuth IS thermodynamically favoured, but is complicated by the occurrence of CuBiS2 The Cu-Pb-S system IS the only one of the four studied where the equilibrium can be calculated simply, as the presence of ternary sulphIde or other phases invalidates calculations based on binary data.

The additive property of dispersion variances was found experimentally by D.G. Krige using data from the gold deposits of the Witwatersrand. In this property, called ?Krige?s relationship?, the dispersion of a small unit, v, within the deposit is equal to the sum of the dispersion of v within a bigger unit, V, and the dispersion of these units, V, within the deposit, D. It is known that the variance of the grades decreases as the support increases, the so-called volume-variance relationship. To analyse volume-variance and Krige?s relationship, the methodology herein proposed combines blending piles and geostatistical simulation to simulate the in situ and the pile grade variability. Variability reduction in large piles is based on the volume-variance relationship, i.e. the larger the support, the smaller the variability (assuming perfect mix). Based on a pre-defined mining sequence to select the blocks that will form each pile for each simulated block model, the statistical fluctuation of the grades derived from real piles can be simulated. Using this methodology, one can evaluate within a certain time period the expected grade variability for various pile sizes, and also calculate the Krige?s relationship between the small blocks and the piles of different sizes. A real case study using a large Brazilian iron ore deposit illustrates the methodology and demonstrates the validity of the results.

The design of piles and of pile groups has remarkably progressed over the past two decades. The in­creasing complexity of the building concept implements a more rational approach of the deep foundation capacity and its interaction with the structure. Moreover, the understanding of the soil characteristics relevant to deep foundation behaviour, is continuously in progress because soil parameters are always more accurately determined; which also contributed a lot to the recent developments in pile capacity design. At last, due to the increasing sensitivity of buildings to deformations, continuous attention must be also paid to pile group settlements. The aim of this report is to discuss some of the mentioned more important pile design developments.

Luminescence excited by electron bombardment, or cathodoluminescence (CL), is a very useful tool in petrographic examination of rocks, minerals and ores. Differences in luminescence colors and intensities allow detection and delineation of mineral species and composition zones difficult to separate visually by normal polarized light microscopy. The cold cathode CL chamber at Indiana University is used with a binocular microscope that has interchangeable attachments for a normal film camera, a digital camera and a fiber optic spectrometer. This allows imaging of the specimens as well as limited spectrographic analysis of the emitted luminescence. The chamber on this CL unit is large enough to accommodate several thin sections, polished mounts, grain mounts or rock slices at one time. Luminescence petrographic techniques were used to study alkali syenites and carbonatites from the Arkansas. Alkali feldspars in the syenites reveal a history of growth, fenitization and replacement through color and intensity differences. Primary orthoclase luminesces bright blue and is often zoned with a duller blue overgrowth of microcline. Fenitization of the feldspars is demonstrated by dull to bright red luminescence and replacement veins of albite often have a bright yellow green luminescence. Late microcline and perthites from the syenite pegmatites have a dull yellow to orange luminescence. Easily visible on this background of feldspars are grains of apatite (yellow), fluorite (violet), zircon (greenish), sodalite (orange) and mosandrite (green). Complex pseudoleucite syenites from Magnet Cove, Arkansas show similar minerals but also include xenolithic quartz (violet), manganwollastonite (bright orange), benitoite (intense blue) and lorenzenite (green). Carbonatites from Arkansas contain a wide variety of calcite textures and intensities of luminescence. Grains of carbonatite in well cuttings are easily distinguished from sedimentary calcites by their complex “flame” luminescence and the frequent presence of euhedral apatite grains (yellow). Apatite crystals separated from the Arkansas River Valley carbonatites by acid digestion show complex zoning. The cores of these apatites are yellow luminescing due to CL activation by Mn enrichment while the rims are violet luminescing due to REE enrichment. Complex zonation between the cores and rims is easily visible using CL.

[Subbituminous coal or lignite when stored in random piles or in ordinary bins in which the temperature fluctuates and air circulates quickly undergoes objectionable physical and chemical changes, which decrease the utilization value of the fuel and increase its tendency to ignite spontaneously. Slacking takes place, and the heating value decreases. These changes are accelerated by fluctuations of temperature and by circulation of air through the storage space. When such coals are exposed to the weather they lose moisture rapidly. If evaporation from the surface of a lump proceeds at a faster rate than that at which it is replaced by moisture from the interior, the rate of shrinkage at the surface is greater than that at the interior; consequently, stresses are generated at the surface which cause the coal to disintegrate. Likewise, when moisture is absorbed by the air-dried surface the outside layers expand at a faster rate than the interior, which results in further break-down. As these cycles are repeated the lump may disintegrate completely. Therefore, successful storage of low-rank coals depends on control of the factors that influence change of moisture.]
