This paper presents preliminary test results obtained with a 0.38 kg/s (3000 lb-hr) beta prototype MagMill™. In processing Upper Freeport coal the beta prototype recovered 82% of the weight of the feed and 91% of the heat content while reducing the potential emissions of sulfur, kgSO2/GJ(lbSO2/MBtu), by 61%. Pyritic sulfur in the MagMill™ product was reduced by 78% compared to that in the feed. For all runs, the mill product was controlled between 70 to 80% finer than 74 µ particle size. Recoveries of mercury, arsenic, and selenium ranged from 35 to 45% of that in the feed. Power draw was reduced by 26% and mill throughput was increased by 9% compared to the pulverizer operating with no magnetic separator attached.

Ball Clay -- Four companies - H.C. Spinks Clay Co. Inc. (owned by Lhoist Group), Imerys Group (formerly Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Co.), Old Hickory Clay Co. and Unimin Corp. - mined ball clay in four states during 2010. Production, based on preliminary data, was 910 kt (1.11 million st) with an estimated value of $42.9 million. That was a 10-percent increase in tonnage from 831 kt (916 million st) with a value of $37.7 million that was produced in 2009. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 61 percent of domestic production. It was followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 70 percent of production was airfloat, 20 percent was crude and 10 percent was water-slurried.

Wire rope, when used for hoisting on a mine is one of the most vulnerable units in the most expensive group of installations on the mine. With the introduction of hoisting on the Koepe sheave, a new technique was established. This innovation brought with it certain advantages which long had been recognized and which are being developed further.A need exists for the development of an infallible non-destructive testing device for wire ropes and it is axiomatic that the development and application of such a device should be coupled with the physical examination of mine hoisting systems. Therefore an integrated type of research programme is necessary in order to correlate the effect of shock loading with rope damage, which may be detected ultimately bynon-destructive means. This paper reviews certain historical aspects of investigations on this topic and it outlines a policy for research which can cope with a.c. or d.c. methods of excitation of the rope.INTRODUCTIONThe importance of wire rope in mining operations is often not fully recognized. A wire rope when used for hoisting in a mine shaft should be regarded as a "machine" forming part of a system of machines, and consequently it should be specified as such when it is purchased, it should be maintained as such during its working life, and it should be discarded only when it has done its duty and has been rendered either unsafe or uneconomic for further use.Every mine shaft, vertical or inclined, has in it one or more wire ropes which are used to transport men, material, and ore. The protection of miners, equipment, and infrastructure is discussed. While the primary focus of the described technology is to prevent miners from being injured, struck-by, or crushed by heavy equipment; another major benefit realized is also the protection of equipment and infrastructure. An attempt is made to define and classify the systems used to provide proximity detection and warnings as well as collision detection and avoidance. Information about the speed of vehicles and human operator response time can be a factor in the choice of what type of system and what features are needed to properly address the needs. How the technology adjusts to compensate for various vehicle speeds, while maintaining the same level of protection is noted. The statistics which justify the need of miner protection are provided. The primary system components required, what attributes they feature, and how they respond in the environment, is briefly highlighted. The physics behind the danger zone marker technology and what makes it so robust and reliable is established. Examples of a few mining applications and specific operational modes are provided for both surface and underground.

"The Williams Mine, Canada's largest gold mine, processes over 6,000 t/d of ore utilizing SAG/ball milling, leaching and CIP, carbon stripping, electrowinning and refining to produce gold dare bullion.Grinding accounts for over 50% of milling costs with grinding media, power and mill liners making up over 75% of grinding costs. Since 1991, several changes in these areas have been made which have significantly reduced costs, while fineness of grind and mill recovery have both been increased.This paper discusses the changes made in the grinding circuit over the past few years and assesses their impact on operating costs and mill operations.IntroductionThe Williams Mine is located in the Hemlo area of northwestern Ontario, about 40 km east of Marathon. It is operated by the Williams Operation Corporation, which is equally owned by Teck Corp. and Homestake Canada Inc. Canada's largest gold mine, the Williams Mine commenced operation in October 1985 at a rate of 3, 000 t/d. Mill throughputs have typically exceeded design, averaging 3, 397 t/d in 1986, and 3,380 t/d in 1987. In August 1988, production was increased to 6,000 t/d. Throughput averaged 4,212 t/d in 1988. Production increased over the next few years averaging 5,477 t/d in 1989, 6,248 t/d in 1990, 5,987 t/d in 1991, and 6,283 t/d in 1992. With a recovery of over 95.5%, production for the first three quarters in 1993 is averaging 6,408 t/d.GeologyThe main ore body is a steeply dipping conformable zone of microcline-quartz-muscovite rock. It occupies the contact zone between hanging wall metasedimentary rocks and foot wall felsic quartz feldspar porpyritic rocks of possible volcanic or subvolcanic intrusive origin. The ore body is enveloped by muscovite schists which are thickest on the footwall side. The schist is enriched with tourmaline, pyrite, and green mica containing vanadium and barium. The ore body contains pyrite and barite which occurs mostly in laminae and bands to veinlets and breccia fillings. The gold occurs as free (native) grains, 20 to 30 µm in size at grain junctions of the microcline and quartz. Visible gold is rare in the main zone. There are commonly two or more discernable layers of economic value which are separated by weakly gold mineralized material which usually consists of muscovite schist, barite rich zones or sulphide poor-microcline-quartz rock and in the upper and western fringes by biotite rich schist with feldspathic fragmental characteristics. Molybdenite is a common constituent as very fine disseminated grains in the microcline-quartz rock and is most prominent with gold enrichment. Stibnite and realgar are two of the more common accessory sulphides."

A numerical method for discriminating between replacement and sedimentary processes is applied to a folded stratiform sulphide occurrence. It is shown that numerical treatment of chemical analyses from a single diamond drill hole allowed a rapid assignment of the ore to the syngenetic sedimentary class and thereby enabled a revision of the evaluation program concerned with consequent reduction in costs.

"Mine planning is a multidisciplinary procedure that aims to guarantee the profitability of a mining operation in changing and uncertain conditions. Mine plans are normally classified as long-term, intermediate-term, and short-term plans, and many factors affect the preciseness of these plans and cause deviations in reaching the objectives. Commodity price is the heart of mine planning, but it has a changing and uncertain nature. Therefore, the determination of mine plans in the presence of uncertain mineral price is a challenge. A robust mine plan reduces the risk of early mine closure. A procedure is presented to determine the value at risk (VaR) in any possible mine planning alternative. VaR is considered together with downside risk and upside potential in order to select the most profitable and least risky plan. The model is tested on a small iron ore deposit. IntroductionMining projects are normally evaluated with the objective of maximizing economic value, as measured by the net present value (NPV). The aim of mine planning is to develop a yearly extraction plan that guides the mining operation to the highest NPV (Dagdelen, 2007; Yarmuch and Ortiz, 2011). This plan considers the technical constraints such as blending requirements, block sequencing, and pit slope (Caccetta and Hill 2003). Thus, the mine plan affects the economics and the payback period of mining operations.Mine planning is a procedure based on which the profitability of the mining operation is guaranteed in changing and uncertain conditions (McCarter, 1992). However, conventional mine planning ignores the volatility and uncertainty of future commodity prices and does not allow for managerial flexibility. It is common practice to assume a deterministic and constant commodity price through the mine life. The problem with this approach is that the commodity price is the heart of the mine planning procedure and governs the profitability and feasibility of the operation; thus ignoring price volatility will result in a sub-optimal mine plan."

Since the 1960’s toroidal conductivity has been used to determine the Alumina to Caustic ratio of the digester discharge liquor stream. In recent years the application of ceramic materials have allowed the sensors to moved upstream to provide tighter control of the process. In the Bayer process, dissolving the aluminum contained in bauxite ore in caustic soda and converting it to aluminum oxide produces alumina. An important parameter of the process is measuring the alumina to caustic ratio in the digester discharge stream. The A/C ratio at a given caustic concentration is a measure of the degree of saturation of the alumina in the plant liquor. The aim in the process is to achieve a high A/C ratio. There is however a limit where precipitation will occur if the A/C ratio is too high. For many years conductivity has been used to determine the A/C ratio. Conductivity of discharge liquor is related to the caustic concentration. The change in the caustic concentration is in the same direction of the change of solubility of the alumina. Controlling the conductivity through adding additional bauxite ore and varying the dilution flow can increase plant yield.

HOT pressing of powder particles has gained importance recently, since it affords a method in which high densities are rapidly attained. In a recent study on hot pressing of alumina powders, Mangsen, Lam-bertson, and Best1 have shown within the limits of their experiment, the validity the rate equation for densification in hot pressing, originally proposed by Murray, Livey, and Williams.2 i.e., where D = fraction of theoretical density, t = time, P = pressure and 77 is the viscosity, all in appropriate units. This equation was derived from earlier work of Shuttleworth and Mackenzie3 which is based on the closing of spherical pores under the action of surface tension. The integrated form of this equation yields a straight-line relation between log (1 - D) and t. Such conditions were found by Felten4 to be true only after extended periods of pressing. IT is said by some that the occurrence of a deposit of sulphide of antimony in Southwestern Arkansas has been known for fifteen or twenty years. Whether or not such is the case I am not prepared to say, but I am not able to find any record of such a discovery, or any analysis of antimony ore obtained from that section, published at so early a period. The present discoveries, that seem to be attracting some attention, date back to the winter of 1873-74. At that time a vein of ore was found by Mr. Robert Wolf, in honor of whom the vein was named, and still is called, "the Wolf lode." At the time of the discovery the ore was unknown to the prospector, and its composition was not thoroughly understood in that locality until samples were sent to several analytical chemists, who pronounced it sulphide of antimony-stibnite. Since the discovery of this ore there have been three mines opened, and a number of interesting minerals of the antimonial series have been found. I have had an unusually good opportunity to collect specimens from these mines; and it is owing to the constant inquiry concerning the character of these ores that I have collected for publication the results of quite a number of analyses, sufficient I trust to clearly point out their composition. This is one of the few localities in the United States where antimony ore is found in workable quantities; I say workable quantities, because two different shipments of ore have been made to English reduction works, and in both cases excellent returns were made. The discovery of these deposits will, it is hoped, give rise to a prosperous and remunerative industry at no distant day, and when fully developed they may yield ore in sufficient quantity to supply the regulus for the home demand, thus adding wealth not only to those interested, but also to the State of Arkansas. The three mines are situated in the northern part of Sevier County, and may be reached by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway to Fulton, thence by wagon-road to Columbus, Nashville, Centre Point, and to the mines. The Jinping-II hydroelectric project in China features four parallel headrace tunnels approximately 18-km- (11-mile-) long. Two will be excavated by tunnel boring machines (TBM) and two by drill-and-blast. A nearby fifth tunnel is being excavated by a 7.2-m (23.6-ft) TBM to draw down ground water in advance of excavating the headrace tunnels. Unique onsite assembly of a 12.43-m (40.7-ft) main beam TBM and backup system was completed on Sept. 18, 2008 in the remote mountains of the Sichuan province. The equipment was assembled onsite, without previously having been assembled and tested in a factory, using a method called onsite first time assembly (OFTA). This paper addresses the following topics: ? Project description including geology and terrain. ? The decision process leading to onsite, first time assembly, the assembly process and logistics, and lessons learned. ? Design features of the TBM and backup system. ? Recently discovered Carboniferous bentonites are variable in charadeI and thickness, but being altered aeolian, ash-fall tuffs, they are probably extensive. Most are the Ca-montmorillonite type without the natural swelling characteristics of the Wyoming deposits, but their situation, thickness, and response to beneficiation through cation exchange may give them some potential as sources of future economic deposits.INTRODUCTIONLoughnan and See (1959) gave an account of bentonites and fuller's earth deposits of New South Wales. The most likely potential industrial sources were those occurring in the uppermost formations of the Newcastle and Singleton Coal Measures (Permian) in the Hunter Valley and deposited during epochs not marked by strong contemporary vulcanicity.One feature of the record of known occurrences at that time was the absence of bentonites from the thick volcanic sequences of the Carboniferous, but since this paper appeared, many bentonite beds have been discovered by the writer in the Carboniferous facies formerly known as the "Kuttung Series".The purpose of this contribution is to report briefly on the occurrence, genesis, mineralogy, and economic potential of these deposits which augment possible sources of bentonite near major industrial centres on the eastern seaboard.The potential world demand for bentonite would increase markedly with the trend to pelletization in the steel industry, if its use in this field became more general. In multiphase ternary diffusion studies, plots of the variation bf the composition on the isotherm constitutes one of the most effective methods of presenting experimental results, especially if such plots are made in a manner which relates the composition path on the isotherm with the diffusion layer structure in the couple. Unfortunately, if different conventions for plotting are used serious misinterpretations occur readily, causing apparent disagreement between investigators who actually share the same viewpoint. A common convention for mapping these diffusion paths is needed at this time because with the increasing use of the electron-probe X-ray microanalyzer, a much greater number of ternary diffusion studies can be expected in the near future. In an effort to prevent unnecessary confusion in the future litera- ture, a convention for these plots is proposed, as outlined below. A hypothetical example of the use of these conventions is given in Fig. 1 where the path of composition through the diffusion structure of the 100 pct A/50 pct B, 50 pct C couple is plotted on the appropriate isotherm of the ABC system. The lower case letters relate the region in the diffusion layer structure to the appropriate composition on the ternary isotherm. 1) The diffusion path is plotted on the isothermal section corresponding to the diffusion temperature of the couple. 2) The terminal compositions of the plotted diffusion path are the initial compositions of the couple halves—provided infinite boundary conditions are maintained. If, in either couple half, infinite conditions are not maintained, then the path terminates at the composition of the exterior surface of the couple. If, at this surface, the composition varies with time or if the plotted path is time dependent, then the diffusion time should be noted beside the plotted path. 3) A solid line crossing a single phase field (e.g., line a-b in Fig. 1) denotes an existing layer of that phase in the diffused couple. 4) A dashed line crossing a two-phase field parallel to the tie lines (e.g., line g-h) represents an interface between the two phases with interfacial compositions designated by the ends of the tie-line. The line represents no spatial extent. 5) A solid line crossing a two-phase field so as to cut tie lines (e.g., line b-c or line j-k) represents a locally equilibrated columnar two-phase layer. REFERENCES Under the heading "Development System for Block Caving under Severe Conditions" a report was presented to this congress regarding a magnesite mine using block caving for several years. On account of the experience gathered in this mine and the results of far reaching exchange of experience, as well as under due consideration of the international literature it is tried to systematically list and briefly discuss the following factors that have to be considered for development and draw control of block caving. 1. NATURAL FACTORS It is self evident that this implies all those circumstances given by nature and which cannot be altered by man. Any mining activity is subjected to those and the success is depending on how far technology can be adjusted to those conditions. Geology Deposits of considerable thickness with rather steeply inclined flat-faced contacts are optimal for block caving. While vertically there is practically no limitation- for the deposit, theoretically, the smallest horizontal basis apt for operating block caving is the minimum area necessary to get the rock to completely cave in by undercutting and drawing. Practically, only consider- ably bigger main dimensions are found, mainly because of technical factors (machinery and equipment) and economic factors (cost ratio of exploration vs. development, danger of contamination).

"This paper describes mineral processing test work on drill core samples from an ilmenite deposit in Terrebonne County just north of Montreal.Mineralogical examination showed that the intimate associa¬tion between ilmenite and hematite precluded their separation. The maximum concentrate grade was therefore limited to 22.9% Ti. Liberation of gangue from the hemo-ilmenite grains occurred around 400 µm, a size which proved to be too coarse for recovery by flotation.Other physical separation techniques, such as elec¬trodynamic, magnetic and jigging, were tried in order to take advantage of the relatively coarse liberation size. An all-flotation procedure and a combination of jigging and flotation yielded similar separations.IntroductionInco Metals Company, through its subsidiary Canico, optioned an ilmenite deposit in Terrebonne County, just north of Montreal, and conducted a drilling campaign to confirm previous geological assessments of the deposit and to provide core samples for mineralogical study. Parts of these core samples were used for mineral processing studies, which will be described in this report. The objective was to identify suitable upgrading procedures, to determine the optimum combination of concentrate grade and recovery, and to provide suitable batches of concentrate for further treatment."

A number of novel solutions have been proposed in recent years as alternatives to props and tie-backs in deep excavation support e.g. Adekunte (2008), Deschamps et. al. (2008), Adekunte et al. (2010) and Adekunte (2014). A number of these non-standard restraining solutions involve the construction of permanent or temporary vertical or raking buttress piles that are rigidly connected to the excavation support wall at regular intervals along the wall run. This paper chiefly focuses on the design and construction of twin-vertical buttress piles as restraining systems behind or in front of embedded retaining walls. The system essentially relies on the push-pull mechanism that develops between the twin piles, to maintain the overall stability of the excavation support. The paper’s main areas of concentration include; finite element modelling, geostructural design, construction procedure, instrumentation and monitoring that are associated with the application of twin- buttress pile systems. These are supported with project details of three recently completed high-end luxurious residential developments in Greater London, England, on which the twin-buttress pile system was used to restrain the excavation support walls for the basements on the sites. The mode of application of the system varies across the three sites. While the system was adopted as a long term solution behind the retaining wall on one of the sites, it was designed and constructed for temporary use in front of the retaining walls on the other two sites. Instrumentation and monitoring results from all the sites show the non-traditional system to be safe and effective, whilst having significant beneficial effects on construction programme, sequence of works and project cost.

A modified liquation technique was developed for recovering tin from tinhouse scruff metal or hardhead containing about 10 per cent iron and 15 per cent occluded flux, palm oil, and moisture. This was effectedby heating the scruff metal to 950°C followed by rapid cooling to suppress the formation of FeSn2 and FeSn, and then subjecting it to the ordinary liquation and drossing processes of refining. By this method it was possible to recover about 83 per cent of the original tin content and, with subsequent smelting of the irony drosses, an overall recovery of 92 per cent was obtained.
