First -aid training as an adjunct to safety is receiving more wide spread recognition in the industries every year . Moreover , the adoption of a program for giving firstaid training to practically all employees at a mine or plant is based upon the experience gained and good results obtained from standard first -aid instruction during the past two decades . In the near future industries that desire to maintain a low accident rate , to decrease compensation costs , to reduce lost time , and to build up an efficient , loyal working force , will recognize that training in first aid is one way of attaining these results with little expenditure of time and effort . Progressive organizations will require every man from the superintendent down to take first - aid training and not , as heretofore , only a small percentage of the working force . When employees learn that first - aid training can be applied not only at their daily tasks but in their homes and on tthhee highways ,, they will welcome the opportunity of learning how to care for injuries and perhaps save lives . In a limited way first - aid instruction was given to miners as early as 1899 . Later , in 1904 , a few of the companies in the Pennsylvania anthracite district inaugurated the distribution of first - aid packets to their employees and instructed them in the use of the contents . It remained , however , for a branch of the United States Government to grasp the real significance of widespread first - aid training as an effective means of saving life and minimizing suffering from the large number of accidents among workers in the mineral industries . "This paper describes the objectives and design parameters for the operation of a computerized In-The-Hole (I. T.H.) Drill. The principal objective is to add computer control to an Inco 00-60 I. T.H. (CMS-CD-90) drill in order to drill holes with greater accuracy. The computer provides control of the angle of the hole by maintaining the orientation of the drill head, and optimizes the straightness of the hole by maintaining a constant force on the drill bit.The second objective is to provide the greatest degree of operational automation, so the objective outlined above can be accomplished with a minimum of operator intervention.In order to provide full operational automation it was necessary to also provide the capability for the computer to add and remove drill rods. To accomplish this, a rod-handling mechanism consisting of a rod storage rack and rod manipulator arms was used.IntroductionMining machinery that lacks automatic control has been found to show a high degree of variation in work output and performance quality when operated by different personnel. Differences in operator attitude, judgment, and skill are reflected directly by production statistics. The addition of automated control has the potential for considerable improvement in machine life and performance. Even with a more acceptable mine environment and much safer conditions than ever before, situations still exist where it is preferable to remove personnel for reasons of safety as well as productivity. Typical advantages of such situations are automated skip loading and hoisting, and the use of remote control load-haul-dump units exposed to open stopes.Other cases arise where heavy work is required under conditions where lighting is poor, floors are slippery, noise levels are high and dust and oil mist exist in the atmosphere. I.T.H. drilling is carried out under such conditions and is one operation where automation can easily be justified."

In the minerals industry allocating capital for setting up a new project or for upgrading an existing facility usually requires that a compromise be found between the initial cost of equipment, its operating performance and on-going operating costs. To maximise the return on the investment usually requires that various possible combinations and layouts of equipment be assessed. This task is both difficult and time consuming. Computer simulation can be used as a means of determining the expected operating performance of a range of alternate equipment configurations. Simulation is a particularly important technique for analysis as it is one of the few approaches that allows the analyst to take into account the variability inherent in a mining process. While computer simulation is a well established technique its use, until recent years, has been limited to large organisations with access to substantial computing facilities. However, with the current availability of low cost computing platforms combined with easily understood animated displays, simulation is now becoming more widely used across the industry.

The scope of this paper is to introduce a mathematical model based on matrix algebra in order to determine similitude quantities, which can be arranged in specific formats to simulate the field conditions and associated behaviour. The formulation of a typical mathematical model applicable to Geomechanics is demonstrated here. The examples provided are intended to facilitate comprehension and application of the proposed model in practice.

Pyrometallurgy has played a very important role in southern Africa for at least four centuries. It continues to do so, and recent years have seen many exciting developments in pyrometallurgical technology. The wonderfully diverse rich mineral deposits in this area of the world have provided some unique opportunities for industrial processes to be established. The ?Southern African Pyrometallurgy 2006? conference was set up to showcase southern African pyrometallurgical operations, and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between people working at various types of smelters. Papers have been obtained from a wide variety of pyrometallurgical plants in southern Africa. These descriptions of plant operations (as well as some history, and highlights of current work) will provide useful reference information for some time to come. Contributions are also included from universities, research organizations, and engineering companies, so that the full spectrum of pyrometallurgical activities can be covered. The plant descriptions will be published on a website, where they can be updated as and when required, with the eventual goal of having a description of every smelter in the region. The conference venue was selected to be the 'Cradle of Humankind' world heritage area, about 40 km from Johannesburg. Not only does this keep the conference within easy reach of the city and yet far enough out into the countryside to allow people to focus on the conference, it is also within easy reach of many pyrometallurgical plants. There is a particular significance to the choice of location, in that the Swartkrans area close to the Sterkfontein Caves is the site of the earliest evidence of the deliberate controlled use of fire by human beings (about 1.3 million years ago), and this is obviously a necessary precursor to pyrometallurgy. The area also lends itself to a very wide range of outdoor, social, and cultural activities to supplement the technical content of the programme. It is hoped that activities such as a hot air balloon safari and visits to the world-renowned Sterkfontein Caves and Wonder Cave will help to make the conference a memorable one for those able to attend. I trust that the ongoing value of the papers and presentations will make all the hard work of the many contributors most worthwhile.

IT. OUTLINE OF THE GEOLOGY. 1. Stratigraphy. The pre-Pennsylvanians rocks exposed in and along the borders of the valley-regions of Alabama, range from middle Cambrian to Mississippian (Lower Carboniferous), and at the SW. extremities of the valleys these rocks are overlain by coastal-plain deposits of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. THE following chronology presents the history of lead-mining in the United States in a brief form and is a useful reference in connection with the statistics of production 1621. Lead was mined and smelted near Falling Creek, Va., to supply the local demand for bullets and shot. This was the first mining and smelting of lead in what is now the United States. 1632. The mining industry is beginning to implement lithiumion batteries (LIBs) to power mine utility vehicles (MUVs) and rubber-tired mantrips (RTMs). However, the ability of LIBs to withstand the harsh conditions for these applications has not been rigorously evaluated. Concerns with the use of LIBs in the mining environment will be discussed including the effects of mechanical shock and vibration, temperature extremes, and moisture exposure. This paper will discuss adverse effects of the mining environment on LIBs and provide an overview of scientific gaps associated with the environmental susceptibility of LIBs used on MUVs and RTMs.

The effects of solutes on the distribution of two-dimensional configurations of grains in zone-refined tin have been studied. When solutes with partition coefficients (ko) greater than unity are added, three-sided pains become more prevalent and the growth law changes. It is shown by electron-Probe micro-analysis that a solute buildup occurs ahead of a moving grain boundary when ko > 1. It has been found recently1, 2 that solutes with partition coefficients greater than unity have a larger retarding effect on grain growth than solutes with k, less than unity. ko is defined as the ratio of the concentration of solute in the solid to the concentration of solute in the liquid with which the solid is in equilibrium. Niessen and winegard2 have suggested that this effect is probably due to the complex shape changes which occur during the process of grain growth and that no theory based on single boundary motion3-5 can explain the results. They suggested that the dissociation of the unstable fourfold junction was delayed in alloys where ko was greater than 1 because the boundaries at the junction had to move into a region of high solute concentration. If indeed this mechanism were correct, it was felt that not only would the dissociation of fourfold junctions be affected by the solute buildup ahead of the boundaries, but the collapse of three-sided grains would be impaired. These combined effects would naturally lead to a modification in the distribution of the number of sides per grain seen on a two-dimensional section. The present investigation was undertaken to test these hypotheses by examining the grain-growth process in detail. EXPERIMENTS The Distribution of Grain Configurations in Zone-Refined Tin as Seen on a Two-Dimensional Section. Following the method of Bolling and Winegard,6 zone-refined tin was cast into button-shaped specimens and, subsequently, plastically deformed under a drop hammer at room temperature. The resulting flat coin-shaped samples were annealed at 200°C, some for 50 sec and others for 100 sec. The specimens were then examined to determine the distribution of the number of sides per grain, i.e., the num- ber of crystals adjacent to any particular grain in the section. For simplicity, the grains were classified as three-sided, four-sided, and so forth; this concept is schematically illustrated in Fig. 1. As indicated by smith,' it was necessary to examine every grain within an enclosed area to obtain a proper distribution of the relative frequency of each type. IN the middle of the eighteenth century John Frazier and wife, Sarah Ingraham, removed from Boston, Mass., to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was held in such esteem that we find him one of the Committee which arranged the ball at Washington's inauguration. Their son John. Nalbro Frazier, was prosperous in his mercantile career and fortunate in his wife, .Anne West; who was an important personage in the early life of Professor Frazier. This cultured lady brought into the family an atmosphere of religious enthusiasm, of thoroughness and: of unity of purpose. Her son, Benjamin West Frazier, inherited her traits and displayed them during a. short and active life. Like his father, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was a member of the firm of Zimmerman, Frazier & Co. In their interests he lived for a short- time in Montevideo, and on his return married Isabella Zimmerman, a daughter of the head of the firm. Their happy married life was cut short by the death of Mrs. Frazier shortly after the birth of the subject of this sketch which, occurred October 3, 1841. Mr. Frazier did not long survive her, and left his orphaned sons to, the care of his mother, from whom he had inherited a lovable and deeply religious nature, an : artistic temperament and a capacity for thorough work. Whatever of these traits fell by inheritance to these children were strengthened by the influence of their grandmother, and. the purity of mind, the delicacy of sentiment, the refinement of honor, which characterized. Professor Frazier, are due to Anne West Frazier, and are generally present in the characters of all of gentle blood who have been under the sole and immediate influence of a mature and refined woman. Experience with knowledge-based systems for Layout planning and roadway support dimensioning is on hand in European coal mining since 1985. The systems SOUT (support choice and dimensioning, 1989), SOUT 2, PLANANK (planning of bolt-support), EXOS (layout planning diagnosis. 1994), Sout 3 (1995) have been developed in close cooperation by CdF1. INERIS2. EMN3 (France) and RAG 4, DMT5, TH - Aachen6 (Germany); ISLSP (Integrated Software for Layout and support planning) development is in progress (completion scheduled for July 1996). This new software technology in combination with conventional programming systems. numerical models and existing databases turned out to be suited for setting-up an intelligent decision aid for layout and roadway support planning. I. INTRODUCTION. OF primary importance in mine-installations is the hoist, which has a very direct bearing on the successful operation of a mine. Conditions vary greatly with different mines, and especially in different localities. Such factors as depth, incline, the number of levels, permissible or desirable speeds, conditions of ore, etc., are always more or less special in each case. Veins of ore are never exactly duplicated, and the nature of the ground through which shafts are sunk may considerably modify permissible values. As mining-laws are made by the different States, they necessarily vary somewhat, and, even when not fully observed, they introduce factors which qualify the conditions of hoisting men and ore. The amount of timbering required is often of importance as relating to hoisting-conditions. Methods of loading ore affect the time required, as also does the question of the use of cars or skips. Safety-precautions must be very carefully considered, and the number of men in each mine, the number of compartments, and often the method of removing water from the mine, must. have careful consideration. While a general discussion of the subject. of hoisting is possible, most cases are entirely special, and can be considered only in connection with the peculiar conditions pertaining to that particular installation. The cost of installation of the hoisting-plant may be an appreciable amount, while the cost of raising the ore may be but a small part of the total operating-charge. In many cases, however, the output of the mine is limited by the capacity of the hoist, and the latter thus becomes of the first importance. * Presented also, by mutual agreement, at the meeting of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, New York, N. FIGURES for the first 11 months of 1935 indicate that the total coal production of the United States for 1935 will be approximately 416,000,000 tons, or almost identical with the production figures for 1934. Bituminous production will show a gain of about six million tons, and anthracite production a loss of about the same tonnage, compared with the previous year. This does not take into account so-called "bootleg" anthracite coal amounting to approximately 5,000,000 tons. Twenty-nine years ago, in 1906, the production of coal was almost identical with this year's production. At that time, 626,000 men were employed in producing this tonnage, which took a toll of 2138 lives from accidents. In 1935, approximately 540,000 men were required to produce the same tonnage with an estimated loss of 1155 lives. This shows definite safety advancement in the industry, but even so accidents are still costing an average of 3c. a ton more than they should.

There are two kinds of problems concerning the elements of a population : the first is to estimate the proportion of some specific kind of element in the population, e.g. the amount of gold in a block of ground (equals population) or the proportion of mercury in a sample; the second is to estimate the length, breadth, volume, etc., of a specific kind of element, e.g. the grain size of quartz grains in a beach sand or the size, shape and arrangement of lenses of ore in an ore deposit. Given a specific objective, a bounded population, identified elements and the element characteristics of interest, it is then necessary to select a sample of the elements from the population and the problem of sampling requires a decision on how to select the sample. It is also necessary to establish, either by heuristic analysis or empirically, based on long experience, the model frequency distribution of the desired element characteristics: in general, constant-probability models are used as models, the binomial or Poisson for count data and the normal distribution for measurements (or their transformed equivalents). The objective of sampling then becomes to obtain an appropriate statistical estimate of the desired population parameter: for example, the estimators may be the mean (X) and variance (a2): these should be unbiased sufficient estimators of their corresponding parameters (u, a2, respectively). Statistical tests are performed in order to determine that the estimators are of the appropriate kind: all statistical tests are designed to test against bias of a specific kind, although they are stated as tests against randomness. Given a random sample of some population, the estimators are usually stable and adequate to solve the sampling problem. Random samples are simple to define but exceedingly difficult to achieve in practice: in selecting a sample, if every element in the population has an equal chance of occurring, then the sample is a random sample. Interaction between the arrangement of elements in a population, i.e. its structure, and the sample selection process frequently introduces bias—that is, some elements have more chance than others of appearing in the sample and, hence, the sample is not random. An algorithm for dealing pragmatically with this aspect of the sampling problem offers one way of achieving random samples and, therefore, adequate estimators. Examples of the use of this algorithm on various kinds of geological populations, in both field and laboratory, illustrate the requirements for solving sampling problems and the achievement of appropriate estimators.

"The Stobie No. 7 shaft, 14 ft diameter, double- drum skip hoist, was installed at the INCO Limited Frood Stobie Complex in 1942. Figure 1 shows the hoist layout. The hoist was originally equipped with babbitted journal bearings on the main drum shaft and pinion gears. In 1990, the hoist was modernized with a new braking system, two new 2000 hp D.C. drive motors, a thyristor armature supply and a PLC control system. The new drive motors were connected to the drive pinion gears with a gear type flexible coupling. The pinion gear journal bearings were refitted during the refit in 1990 as the existing babbitted bearings showed signs of wear. The pinion gear journal bearings had always run warm and had external cooling applied during the warm summer months. Figure 2 shows the journal bearings on the pinion shaft. The skip hoist main bull gear and two pinion gears were replaced in 1997 because of cracked bull gear spokes. New drive couplings were installed on the pinion gears and the pinion journal bearings were modified to allow some self-aligning properties to try to reduce the heating and wear on the babbitt. The modifications did not significantly reduce the heating problems and a decision was made in the spring of 1998 to convert the bearings to self-aligning, anti-friction-type bearings.The traditional roller bearings used on double helical pinion drive gears in hoist applications has always been double-row spherical roller bearings due to their high load-carrying capacity and misalignment allowances.Unlike single helical gears, double helical arrangements do not exert axial thrust on the pinion gear bearings, therefore, both bearings in the pillow blocks must float easily with any pinion displacement. Drum misalignment, thrust bearing end play and a multitude of other influences causes continuous axial displacement of the pinions when in operation. This constant displacement or “hunting” of the pinion gear to maintain its centre on bull gear often exceeds the axial clearance limits of spherical roller bearings thus resulting in a continuous sliding motion of the bearing outer rings against the housing seats. With time, the housing fit eventually wears, creating an out-of-round condition for bearing housing (maximum allowable cylindricity tolerance is IT4/2). When this happens, the pillow block housings must be replaced or re-machined to specification. Premature bearing wear and overheating will occur if a housing out-of-round condition is encountered."

In the course of examinations by representatives of the Bureau of Mines of several compressed-air systems in which explosions had occurred, samples were obtained of the carbon deposits that are formed normally in various parts of the systems by decomposition of the compressor lubricating oil. Experimentation with these carbon deposits has demonstrated that they contain a "carbon-oxygen complex" similar to that formed on coal and on other carbonaceous materials and generally recognized as being the cause of spontaneous heating of coal. The exothermic properties exhibited by such a complex are considered significant in relation to the possible initiation of combustion reactions that may lead to explosions or formation of carbon monoxide in compressed-air systems. This report discusses the occurrence of explosions and formation of carbon monoxide in the use of compressed air and presents results of experimentation conducted with carbon deposits from air compressors.

The hematite deposits of Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF) are hosted by the Proterozoic itabirites of the Itabira iron formation (Harder and Chamberlin, 1915). These deposits are widely distributed at QF and include the hard hematite ore bodies. However, considerable variations in ore structure and texture can be observed. A preserved banding and lamination in the thin bedded, compact hematite ore, apparently reflects the original layering and/or the prominent foliation of the partly or completely replaced itabirite. The structure of the hematite ore deposits varies from almond shaped, rootless, to bedded bodies, both concordant with the main foliation, and to mesoscopic veins and irregular bodies. Hematite ore textures, which depends on the structural characteristics of the deposit, may be grouped into four main types:thin bedded, laminated and banded; micaceous, foliated and schistose; brecciated; and compact/massive. Thin bedded ores occur in the western, central and subordinately eastern portions of QF, while submicaceous, micaceous and schistose ores are predominant at the eastern part. Brecciated ores exist mainly at the western part and subordinately in central QF. Structureless, compact hematite ores may be either related to the brecciated hematite or occur as isolated bodies at central QF. It is suggested that a synkinematic, acid and oxidant, metasomatism during metamorphism, under a ductile regime, was responsible for the hard hematite ores of the types 1 and 2, and a static, subsequent, hydrothermal, regional metasomatism, under brittle regime resulted in the formation of the types 3 and 4. The common texture present in the all ores is the ubiquitous magnetite porphyroclasts replacement by hematite. Quartz and other silicate minerals are also substituted by hematite. Muscovite, tourmaline, talc, chlorite, apatite and kaolinite have been recognised in the hard hematitic ores. Apparently that mineral association denotes different equilibrium conditions of formation.

The regional syndeformational metamorphism affecting the Itabira Iron Formation (IIF) at Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF) was formerly discussed by Dorr (1965), who proposed that quartz grain size could monitor the metamorphism, according to James (1955), and that the formation of haematite could be the result of the synchronous metasomatic process. Herz (1979) suggested the existence of three metamorphic zones, not mentioning the haematite formation. It could be observed that the primary oxide phase in the IIF is magnetite and most of the hard haematite was derived from the metamorphic replacement of magnetite, forming micaceous or schistose haematite. Differently from most iron formations in the world, the formation of haematite deposits at QF occurred under high oxygen fugacity during metamorphism. The haematite microlaths display a strong preferred orientation, which determines the alongated shapes of the fragments. The terms foliated and unfoliated haematite have been applied by Dorr to the micaceous or schistose haematite, and to the isotropic, hydrothermally derived haematite. Under the microcope, the haematite exhibits a strong crystallographic or lattice orientation encircling the magnetite and martite porphyroclasts. The strain rate determined and defined the textural variation, size and economic importance of the deposits and the ore grade. Metamorphism at QF increases eastward and resulted in the formation of a gruneritic Fe-Mg amphibole, at the western portion, followed by a cummingtonitic amphibole at the central-western part, succeeded by the actinolite zone at the central-eastern part, and finally to the tremolite-anthophyllite zone to the east. These zones, arranged in a north-south pattern, can be followed in the pelitic units, whereas appear sericite-chlorite, kyanite-chloritoid and garnet-staurolite respectively. Carbonate geothermometry in IIF also may support the metamorphic variations. At the western zone the haematite forms small lenses within the itabirite, P-contents are slightly higher than in the remaining IIF, haematite grain size is minute, resulting in a submicaceous texture and the amount and dimension of relict magnetite within haematite is greater than in the other parts of QF. Jangada and Serra Azul deposits are examples of this zone. The central-western zone is characterised by significant haematite deposits, in considerable quantity and size, haematite grain size increased, in order to produce a micaceous texture, the P-contents and the amount of magnetite decreased. Pico do Itabirito, Cappo Xavier, Capitpo do Mato and Tamanduß correspond to the deposit type of this zone. At the eastern-central portion the amount of the hard haematite deposits decreases, increasing the soft haematite ore due to higher strain rates. However, it can be perceived that the relict magnetite almost disappeared and the haematite grain size became coarser than the haematite from the western zones. At the eastern zone, the haematite deposits exhibit typical schistose texture, the magnetite porphyroclasts are absent and the lowest P-grades in the haematitic iron formation. The haematite bodies characteristic from this zone are Andrade, Morro Agudo and the deposits at the Itabira District. The hydrothermally derived compact and isotropic haematite deposits, formed subsequently to the micaceous haematite bodies, were generated after deformation ceased, but under very high fluid pressure. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the corrosion behaviour of steel in seawater. It is shown that the corrosion products (oxy-hydroxides and calcareous deposits) that are formed during corrosion in seawater have a significant effect on the corrosion behaviour of steel. The chemical composition of the steel determines how protective the oxy-hydroxide corrosion product is. The composition of the seawater influences the nature of the calcareous deposits. This needs to be considered when artificial solutions are used to simulate the corrosion behaviour of steel in seawater. A 3.5% NaCl solution is used frequently for this purpose, but because no calcareous deposits can be formed in this solution, erroneous results in terms of corrosion rates are obtained. The more complex ASTM D1141 artificial solution can be used to include the effects of ions other than Na+ and Cl- in synthetic seawaters.
