Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative approach to secondary support in underground mining. Unlike all other supports that are either partially or fully prefabricated prior to being transported into the mine, the pumpable support is fabricated in place in the mine entry. This reduces the underground material handling efforts and thus the injuries historically associated with in-mine support construction. On-site fabrication also facilitates application of the support in areas that are inaccessible to transportation equipment such as scoops or rail cars, making it ideal for many bleeder applications. One of the main advantages of the pumpable support is that it fully bridges from the mine floor to the roof, thereby eliminating the requirement of ?topping off? the support with wooden wedges or crib blocks that soften most other support responses. This report examines the development of modern pumpable roof support technology and provides a full description of the performance capabilities of each of the support products now on the market.

"‘Roof support awaiting time’ (RSAT) is a term used at Goedehoop Colliery’s Simunye Shaft to describe the potential production time lost due to the continuous miner (CM) standing idle waiting for roof support to catch up. Investigations revealed that in 2013, Simunye Shaft had approximately1400 hours of RSAT, which suggests that the mine could have potentially produced an additional 280 000 t of coal. This project consisted of two parts. Firstly, the causes of the high RSAT and means to improve the situation were investigated. Secondly, as insisted by mine management, the CM cutting sequence was investigated as a possible cause of high RSAT. Machine-related challenges due to the roofbolter installing support too slowly, geological conditions (mostly hard roof conditions and slips),logistical challenges pertaining to the CM cutting sequence, man-related challenges related to operator fatigue, re-support, operator inexperience, and the absence of support targets were identified as main contributors to RSAT. Furthermore, results showed that the roofbolters in the sections at Simunye Shaft are slower than the CMs. A target of 28% reduction in RSAT was set. Experts from Kennametal and Fletcher were consulted to find solutions for the identified causes. In total, eight solutions for RSAT were identified, but the solution that contributed most significantly to reducing RSAT was to use hard roof drill bits as a standard product at Simunye Shaft. Calculations showed that by using hard roof drill bits, RSAT can be reduced by 43%, which is more than the specified 28% target. The cutting sequences at Kriel, Greenside, and Simunye Shaft, togetherwith three newly developed cutting sequences, were simulated using the UCMS (Underground Coal Mining Simulation) program. A re-aligningprinciple was incorporated into the newly developed cutting sequences toalign the cutting sequences to general support work and to reduce RSAT. A decision matrix revealed that a cutting sequence in which boxing takesplace in R3 (third road to the right of the belt road) and in which the re-aligning principle has been incorporated will be the best option for Simunye Shaft. The recommended cutting sequence will lead to a 5% increase in production.The work presented in this paper was carried out as partial fullfilment for the degree BEng (Mining Engineering)"

The effect of polyelectrolyte flocculants on the de-watering of a tailing suspension of very fine clay was investigated.Sedimentation and filtration experiments were carried out in the labqratory to characterise the de-watering properties of the tailing. The results were used to calculate the effect of flocculant additions on the drainage and vaporation components of the de-watering of a clay suspension ponded on to a sand drainage bed.A flocculant increased the drainage rate, but decreased the volume of water that could be removed by drainage leaving more water to be lost by evaporation.The sorptivity values measured in the laboratory were used in the de-watering equation previously established for the tailing to estimate the effect of flocculant additions on the time required to de-water the suspension from 18.2 to 60 per cent solids w/w. The calculated de-watering times were found to increase or decrease depending on the volume of water removed by drainage and the prevailing evaporation rate.

AH pilot and commercial plants working with Mesabi Range taconite employ wet magnetic separation. Progress is being made with a dry magnetic process, but this has not yet been applied to taconite except in the laboratory and pilot plants. Flowsheets in all five plants are similar, including multiple stages of grinding, each followed by magnetic separation, which rejects a finished tailing. The flowsheet in Fig. 1 is used in the preliminary and commercial plants of the Erie and Reserve mining companies and in Unit C of Oliver's Pilotac plant. At Erie the desliming operation is omitted. In the Reserve plants two ball mills are used with each rod mill. Pilotac uses flowsheet 2 in Unit A-B and has also tested flowsheet 3. Principal differences in the three flowsheets are the number of grinding stages and the type of roughing. The terms open-circuit roughing and closed-circuit roughing are best defined by the diagrams. Special Test Data Given in Table I: For the Erie and Reserve commercial plants, Table I reflects routine conditions. Pilotac, the experimental plant, has been run with several flowsheets, including those followed at Erie and Reserve's commercial operations. Pilotac data for these last two flowsheets are similar to commercial plant results and are not repeated in Table I; statistics are given, however, for special test conditions. using other flowsheets. when the objective was to 'to extra-grade concentrate, Variations Among Taconites: Although crude ore tributary to these plants is generally classified as taconite, there are important differences in mineralogy and fineness of dissemination.

Sea floor hydrothermal activity in the Okinawa Trough is considered a modern analog to ancient Kuroko-type volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Recent scientific drilling projects at active hydrothermal fields have enabled us to conduct comparative studies on hydrothermal clay minerals between ancient and modern systems. Zonal distributions of clay minerals below the sea floor of an active hydrothermal field have been revealed, which is represented by the distinctive assemblage of clay minerals. Zone 1 consists mainly of montmorillonite and sometimes of kaolinite; Zone 2 consists of chlorite and chlorite-smectite mixed-layer mineral; and Zone 3 is represented by the co-occurrence of illite and chlorite, from shallow to deep. This zonal distribution is likely to be in accordance with that reported previously for the Kuroko-type ore deposit. Similarities are also recognised in chemical compositions of illite and chlorite, which are both abundant clay minerals in the vicinity of the ore deposit. While illite would be formed by interaction with the hydrothermal ore fluid, the formation of Mg-rich chlorite is attributed to Mg metasomatism caused by the involvement of sea water. Close economic cooperation was established among the countries in western Europe during the seventies. As a consequence, among others, a need for harmonized technical specifications for civil engineering works arose. Technical specifications for design and execution of building and civil engineering structures exist in most of the European countries. In some countries such technical specifications are part of the building regulations and in other they are independent codes of practice and standards. The works on the Eurocodes was initiated by the Commission of the European Communities about 1976. The Eurocodes are intended as common unified design codes for different load bearing structures constructed from different materials. They are also intended to cover design of geotechnical structures. They are established with a view to promote the free movement of goods and services within the member states of the European Community - the so called Internal Market - and within the member countries of the European Free Trade Association, EFTA by removing obstacles arising from different rules for calculation and design.

Using a cylindrical hydrocyclone with a long vortex finder as the separator, a batch sizer was developed for the fast comparative sizing of the coarse solids normally encountered in mineral pulps.Operating times as short as 2 or 3 min gave separations ranging from 16 mesh down to the subsieve sizes.Reproducibility was good and sensitivity was adequate for most applications.

Most people involved in the mining industry are familiar with student-industry co-op work-study programs. Many colleges and universities have used them for years. Northern College’s Haileybury School of Mines student co-op program adds a new dimension of productivity to the college and the mining industry. The college is located in Hailey-bury, Ontario, Canada. An example of the program’s success is the school’s relationship with Sabin Metal’s SMC (Canada) Ltd.’s McAlpine Mill in Cobalt, Ontario. Students gain practical knowledge and experience while industry gains an eager-to-learn worker. And many of the college’s advanced research services are made available to industry to supplement their own capabilities. The McAlpine Mill was established to provide custom milling of slags and ores. It also recovers metal values from other products of the primary and secondary precious metal industries.

This study investigates the evolution of dimensional properties of grinding products, namely, the mass, the surface area, the length, and the number of particle distributions with the energy input in a ball mill. The size analysis of the mill products enables the calculation of the mass distribution of each material at predetermined size classes and then the determination of the other dimensional properties by taking into consideration the geometry of the particles. Based on the distribution of dimensional properties, an effort was made to determine whether the grinding products are fractal in nature. The effect of material type and grinding conditions on the relationship between the dimensional properties and the specific energy input was also investigated. Special importance was assigned to the study of the specific surface area and the surface area production rate, both during the initial grinding stages and at higher energy levels. The determination of the surface area production rate allows the identification of the grinding limit and the maximum specific surface area which could theoretically be achieved. This approach has as ultimate objective the maximization of energy efficiency and subsequently the minimization of the high grinding cost.

INTRODUCTION Perhaps no other area reflects the art as well as the science of mining-engineering design quite as obviously as strata control. This is due to the fact that the design of mining structures is difficult because rock rarely behaves as a homogeneous medium. Further, the original state of stress and the mechanical proper- ties of the in situ rock are somewhat difficult to deter- mine. However, those aspects that are hard to treat mathematically can and have been successfully approached by model studies and in situ measurements. This chapter will review the fundamentals of strata- control design and will provide examples of applications to typical problems. STRESSES AROUND MINE OPENINGS A close examination of Fig. 1 reveals that, prior to mining, stresses exerted in the overburden can be in both the horizontal and vertical directions. In the example problems of Chapter 1, it was shown that the maximum compressive stress (uv) at any depth (D) below the surface can be approximated as follows: [ ] Further, the lateral stress (oh) is related to the maxi- mum compressive stress by utilizing Poisson's ratio (µ): [ ] As soon as a heading is driven, such as the one in the coal seam shown in Fig. 2, the stresses shift to the sides, or abutments, of the opening. Clearly, these compressive stresses around the opening exceed the pre-mining conditions. The problem of designing an underground opening, therefore, is to determine the maximum stresses and to note if they exceed the ultimate strength of the rock. Table 1 lists several rocks with their corresponding strengths. Figs. 3 to 5 depict the boundary stress concentrations around circular, ovaloidal, and rectangular openings. M is the ratio of the horizontal stress to the vertical stress, or as defined above, p/(l-p). This text will concentrate on the state of stress represented by M = 0.33, which corresponds to the condition of no lateral deformation in a rock having a Poisson's ratio of 0.25. For an ovaloid with an opening width-to-height ratio of 2.0 (Fig. 4), the boundary stress concentrations are at their maximum values at the comers of the opening, with values in excess of 3.0. For the roadway design in the German hard coal mining industry, an advanced combined planning system has been applied during the past 20 years. The German mining industry is working with single entry roadways system. After first longwall passage the roadways will be stabilised with side wall building material packages. Later this roadway will be used again for the second retreating longwall. The intention of the implementation of several different design methods for the planning of the roadways is to enhance the reliability of the results. On one hand the planning system uses numerical simulation and physical modelling in addition to analytical and empirical methods. On the other hand in-situ monitoring and analysis during the roadway development will be used to verify and calibrate the numerical and physical models. Especially before the implementation of new support elements in underground, this system is suitable and reasonable because the new support elements will be tested in the physical and numerical simulation prior to cost intensive underground tests. The interaction between the numerical and physical modelling in comparison with underground monitoring and analysis during development and the later use of roadways will be shown with some examples. The first example shows a rock bolted rectangular roadway which will be mined at both sides of the roadway. Different support and roadway building material package systems are investigated under various stress conditions. The results are utilised to optimise the roadway support and the roadway side package systems. The influence of different points in time of the installation of several support elements in a combined arch and bolted roadway is shown as another example. Two different types of support systems are compared within the physical models. These models are used as a base for ongoing numerical analysis and simulation to find out the ideal point of time to assemble the different support elements. The last example handles the influence of slickensides in the roof of arch shaped roadway on their stability. Different slickenside positions and densities are investigated and classified.

As part of a Bureau of Mines research program to conserve critical and strategic metals, an aqueous electrodeposition method for preparing stainless-steel-type coatings was studied. Chromium powder (averaging 3 J1.m diam) was suspended in a ferrous-nickelous sulfate electroplating bath and occluded in the electrodeposited Fe-Ni alloy matrix. Subsequent heat treatment of the resulting composite coating formed the ternary alloy. The occlusion process was affected by the quantity of Cr powder suspended in the electrolyte and by the microstructure and composition of the electrodeposited matrix. Coatings containing up to 21 wt pct Cr were deposited from an electrolyte containing 20 vol pct suspended Cr powder. Heat treatment at 1,100° C for 8 h homogenized the composite coating. Deposition of 44Fe36Ni20Cr alloy coatings (250 J1.m thick) on AISI 1020 carbon steel rods, followed by heat treatment, provided complete protection of the carbon steel during exposure to a boiling 65-pct-HN03 solution. Corrosion rates of 0.6±OA mm/yr for the coating in the boiling HN03 approximate that of 304 stainless steel. Practically shaped electroforms have been prepared by the coating method.

In addition to fractures and joints, compositional factors and bedding influence the strength of clastic sedimentary rocks. Rock mass rating schemes must therefore consider all of these factors. In this paper, a rating scheme for clastic sediments based on geophysical measurements is described. Geo-physical logging allows an approximation of rock com-position to be obtained and an assessment of bedding frequency and laminations. Velocity measurements incorporate the effects of fracturing. The rating requires scores for the intact rock, bedding/cohesion, and defects. These are combined to yield a Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR). Determination of the GSR is objective and repeatable. GSR values are typically between 20 and 80 and can be related to the Coal Mine Roof Rating.

"The base metal mine at Buchans, Newfoundland, has been producing since 1928. For many years, mill tailings were disposed of by dumping into a nearby natural watercourse via which they were transported to Red Indian Lake and deposited. In 1965, environmental concerns prompted the establishment of settling ponds near the mine site. Effluents fed to these ponds included slimes washed from mine backfill sand and waste water pumped from underground as well as mill tailings. Dusting around the perimeter of the ponds was first observed around 1970and within a couple ofyears reached serious proportions. A program to alleviate the condition by developing a vegetative cover over the tailings was commenced in 1974. The work was successfully carried out and demonstrated that the large area of waste could sustain a permanent cover of grasses.This paper outlines the experimental work done at Buchans as well as the procedures followed and the problems encountered in carrying out full-scale revegetation."

The disposal of end-of-life electronics is an issue receiving increasing scrutiny. This paper evaluates several alternatives for recycling cathode ray tubes (CRTs) within monitors and televisions. The primary recycling options for the glass, reuse in new CRTs or as a smelter flux, are examined from economic and environmental standpoints. The economics are modeled using a cost model that includes dependencies on processing costs, transportation logistics, and incoming material composition. The environmental consequences are modeled using life cycle assessment methodologies to determine the energy embodied in each processing alternative. Results map out preferred processing alternatives across a range of technological and operational conditions. The results indicate that economic costs and environmental consequences are heavily impacted by transportation. The preferred destination of CRT glass for a recycler is highly dependent on the proximity of the consumer to the recycler, although it is generally economically advantageous for the recycler to extensively dismantle the CRTs.

Partition curves are used to evaluate the separation performance of gravity-based concentrators. The partition curve is used to identify the nominal density cutpoint and relative sharpness of the separation. In addition, the graphical representation makes it possible to quickly identify the root cause of misplacement based on the characteristic shape of the partition curve. Partition curves have been traditionally constructed using data obtained from float-sink tests using heavy organic liquids. These toxic liquids are environmentally unfriendly and have been banned in several countries. Another method of establishing the partition curve is to introduce density tracers into the feed and plot the distribution to the lights and heavies. For heavy mineral separations, this approach is generally impractical due to the fine particle size. In addition, the partition data obtained using these existing techniques do not account for secondary factors such as particle shape that may influence the separation. In light of these problems, a methodology was developed for constructing partition curves using experimental data obtained from microscopic grain-counts. This technique, which essentially uses the different mineral species as density tracers, provides a powerful tool for evaluating heavy mineral separations. A case study is provided to demonstrate how this analytical approach can be used to assess and improve the separaton performance in an industrial upgrade plant.

In the Shanghai area, the soil conditions are such that bearing piles have become an essential foundation part of the new highrise buildings. In order to reduce the settlements under the high working loads of about 2300 kN/pile, the Chinese building authorities require the pile tip to penetrate into the compact sand layer, situated at approx. 60-70 m depth. No H-piles have yet been tested under these conditions in Shanghai. This paper describes the driving of 8 H-bearing piles with 4 different shapes and with lengths varying from 45 to 75 m. Dynamic measurements are performed during driving and after a wait time of approx. 40 hours in order to assess the change in bearing capacity in function of time and in order to get an idea about the resistance distribution along the piles by using a stress wave analysis program (CAPWAP). One pile is equipped with channels between the flanges for executing verticality measurements with an inclinometer. However, this test has not yet been performed. One month after driving, two piles of 75 m length are statically loaded both in vertical and in horizontal directions.

Face and pillar bursts, bumps and bounces are violent failures that occur in underground coal mines in response to a complicated interplay of face and pillar geometry, seam depth, coal properties and interactions between roof, seam and floor strata. Additional complications arise from the presence of gas, mainly methane, and associated pressure and flow that vary with time and are further influenced by the rate of face advance. Where gas plays a dominant role, the term outburst is often used; where stress concentration is primary, terms such as burst, bump or bounce may be used. Hargraves [1983] presents an often cited review of outburst phenomena with emphasis on Australian conditions. Beamish and Crosdale [1998] indicate outbursts have occurred for over a hundred years and present tabulations of outburst numbers in major coal basins throughout the world. A central consideration is the rate of depressurization that occurs in the course of mining. Outbursts are not limited to coal seams and adjacent strata; they also occur in salt and potash mines [Molinda et al 1988]. Stress concentration and gas pressure act in consort, so the combined action is important to understanding the mechanics of bursts or outbursts and to the development of measures to reduce the associated hazard. Gas flow is a complicated phenomenon associated with diffusion of gas from micro-pores and the flow of gas along cleats. Laboratory measurements indicate both are dependent on stress and pressure [Harpalani and Ouyang 1998]. Moreover, gas permeability in porous media is often many times water permeability [Klinkenberg 1941]. However, there is also evidence that gas and water permeability are similar at elevated stress and follow Darcy?s law [Dabous et al]. Gas flow is also of importance to mine ventilation. Price et al [1973] in cooperation with personnel of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines developed finite difference models to estimate methane emission in mines in the Pocahontas No. 3 and Pittsburg seams using a premining pressure of 4.69 MPa (680 psi) and Darcy's law implying laminar flow. However, the effects of stress were not taken into account. In this regard, mine measurements of permeability are usually based on Darcy?s law [Peide 1990]. Early models of gas flow with stress effects were one-dimensional in space and time (x,t) and were developed with the goal of estimating the gas pressure profile from the face into the seam as time passed [Schlanger and Paterson 1987, Zou and Yu, 1999]. A zone of high permeability adjacent to the mining face was recognized in these early models. Later models based on the popular finite element method allowed two spatial dimensions (x,y) and variation in time (t) and for coal seam heterogeneity [Tang et al, 2002]. Zhu et al [2007] formulated a set of nonlinear equations involving a complicated stress-pressure-permeability relationship for application to coal seam gas flow and concluded the coupling was important but failure of coal should also be considered. Wold et al [2008] used a hybrid finite difference - finite element model interleaved with a reservoir simulation model to study outbursts based on extensive mine and laboratory measurements. An important feature of the modeling was the use of spatially variable material properties and Monte Carlo simulation to obtain quantitative estimates of outburst conditions and probabilities. Connell [2009] used the same reservoir simulation model as Wold but used the popular finite difference code FLAC3D for hydro-mechanical responses to evaluate two permeability relationships, one depending on porosity and the other on stress, and concluded that permeability changes with gas production were more complex than computed by either permeability model. Gadde [2010] in an integrated laboratory and field study of coal pillar strength explored the effect of spatial variability and concluded that design based on average strength was acceptable in some circumstances, although gas pressure was not an issue. Liu et al [2011] also applied a FLAC code to analyze two-dimensional gas flow and deformation of layered but homogeneous strata in a Chinese coal mine using a strain-softening model and concluded that damage and gas pressure were important to strata safety relative to the case without gas.

Virtual Reality (VR) simulations are excellent tools for training, education, simulation of abnormal and dangerous conditions in mines and solving complex problems. Although the concept of VR has been around for nearly half a century, it has taken recent advances in hardware and software to bring this technology to within the budgetary reach of ordinary users and researchers. VR is now successfully being used in the minerals industry for: data visualization, accident reconstructions, simulation applications, risk analysis, hazard awareness and training. The Institute of Sustainable Minerals Industry, Advanced Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality Research Group (SMI-VR) at the University of Queensland, established in late 2000, has been involved in developing VR applications for the minerals industry in conjunction with various research centres. This paper illustrates the benefits of using advanced computer graphics and VR techniques in the minerals industry with some examples of applications developed.
