Deepsea Mining will soon become a reality with Nautilus Minerals getting their equipment ready to mine SMS at Solwara 1 off the coast of Papua New Guinea. The vertical transport system (VTS) adopted by Nautilus consists of a riser hanging ‘freely’ from the mining production vessel with a lifting pump unit suspended at its lower end. A compliant jumper connects the pump to the seabed crawler without restraining its movements. In this free-hanging VTS arrangement, the vessel can be re-positioned to follow the crawler should it want to extend the mining area and start stretching the jumper. A recently proposed alternative to this is a free-standing VTS whereby the riser is grounded on the seabed with a base and maintained in an upright position by distributed buoyancy modules or a buoyancy tank at the top. A compliant jumper connects the seabed crawler to the riser base, and another connects the riser top to the vessel. In this free-standing arrangement, the entire VTS can be lifted clear of the seabed for relocation to a new mining area. This paper will describe the important features of the two options and discuss the advantages and disadvantages in respect of riser dynamic behavior, water depth, weather and mining windows, pump maintenance, installation and retrieval, continency measures, etc. The two systems will also be appraised separately for mining SMS and SMnN deposits.

The interest in investigating the processing characteristics of mineral deposits in Norway has seen an upsurge in the last decade. One of the major areas of interest is a huge copper deposit, operated by NUSSIR ASA located in the Repparfjord Tectonic Window in the caledonides of west Finnmark. This study reports analysis of ore from the deposit for development and modifications in the flotation flowsheet for the NUSSIR ASA copper ore. The mineralogical characterization for the ore sample was achived by optical microscopy and Zeiss automated mineralogy while grinding characteristics were tested using Bond Index tests. The results confirmed the presence of Cu minerals in the form of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and bornite in the samples, which are mainly liberated in the – 105 µm size range. The majority of non-liberated copper sulphides associated with silica and the carbonates varies from 3 to 28 percent in the –250 µm samples . It is also observed that the copper minerals are uniformly distributed in all size ranges. Selective flotation of NUSSIR copper ore was performed in different size fractions with a motive to identify the correct liberation size and thus to obtain a copper concentrate meeting the quality requirements. The flotation experiments are essentially performed in two stages: the rougher and the cleaner stage. Mass balance calculations were performed showing that approximately 88 percent of copper can be obtained at the end of the process. Ultimately, overall circuit copper recoveries ranged between 83.5 to 88.1 % with a concentrate grade of 35 to 48 % Cu.

"This paper introduces the mineralogical analysis of certain polymetallic copper-zinc ore in China with the aim of improving the flotation process. The main valuable elements, mineral phases and compositions of run-of-mine ore were inspected by the X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and chemical analysis. For a deep known of the old process defects, Mineral Liberation Analysis system (MLAs) was employed to investigate the minerals liberation degree of selected key slurry points. Analysis results show that the run-of-mine ore belongs to the original copper-zinc polymetallic symbiotic ore at low oxidative level, which mainly contains 0.16% Cu, 4.43% Zn and 0.88% Sn. Gangue minerals are mainly silicate minerals, and zinc mineral is sphalerite. MLAs test illustrates that about 86% sphalerite has been dissociated in zinc flotation feed. In the current flotation process, over grinding of sphalerite monomer and insufficient liberation of intergrowths are the key problems need to be solved imminently. Up to this point, a new process consisted of two steps roughing unit is submitted in this research. It contributes two positive effects on zinc flotation performance: (i) separating sphalerite monomer timely to decrease overgrinding; (ii) improving zinc minerals intergrowths liberation efficiency. Flotation results indicate that the zinc concentrate grade increased 0.90% and the recovery improved 0.96% in the new flotation processINTRODUCTION Mineralogical analysis mainly focusses on solving mineralogy problems in minerals processing, assisting in minerals behaviors prediction and control for separation engineering (Falkovich, et al., 2001; Hillier, et al., 2003; Schouwstra and Smit, 2011). Process defects searching becomes its ordinary work, and flotation optimization appears to be its targets gradually. For example, Lucky Friday mine company (Idaho America) fails to obtain qualified lead concentrate as the change of ore properties (Nadoll, et al., 2011). Mineralogical analysis ascertains that there are too many dissociated sphalerite, pyrite and gangue particles exist in lead concentrate. According to this, more cleaning units are added to solve problems effectively. Kanowna Belle mine (Australia) takes a flash circuit in operation successfully with the aim of optimize flotation process, under the helps of mineralogical analysis and industrial test (Newcombe, et al., 2013). Lotter N.O. (2011) gives a deep description on how mineralogical data assisting mineral processing engineers to design and optimize flowsheet. For decades, quantitative and automated mineralogy techniques (Andersen, et al., 2009; Gu, et al., 2012; Oghazi, et al., 2009; Yu, et al., 2007) get well developed and hugely improve the veracity and repeatability of minerals properties measurement. Among these, MLAs (Gu, 2003) provided by JKMRC (Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Center) is critically acclaimed all over the world. This analysis system can measure mineral phases composition and content, particles size, minerals occurrence and liberation degree directly."

"In view of the present situation that the traditional environment friendly depressants for galena aren’t very effective in the separation of mixed concentrate including copper sulfide and lead sulfide, this research describes a new environment friendly depressant PD-1 and investigates its effects and mechanism in the separation of chalcopyrite and galena. This study is carried out through flotation tests, analysis of infrared spectra and absorption measurements. It is shown that when O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z200) is used as collector, chalcopyrite and galena can be separated in the presence of PD-1 under appropriate conditions. Therefore, it can be concluded that PD-1 has an excellent depression ability and great selectivity for galena. Meanwhile, analysis of infrared spectra demonstrates that PD-1 can strongly absorb on the galena surface by chemical interaction with Pb2+, while it hardly absorbs on the chalcopyrite surface. In addition, the results of absorption measurements reveal that competitive adsorption occurs on the galena surface between PD-1 and Z200, PD-1 can block the absorption of Z200 on the galena surface. However, PD-1 has a little effect on the absorption of Z200 on the chalcopyrite surface under above conditions. What’s more, the hydrophilic groups of PD-1 molecules can make galena effectively depressed. The results of mechanism analysis are in accordance with those of flotation tests.INTRODUCTION In the processing of copper-lead sulfide ores, the process, copper increase and lead reduction (Zhang et al., 2017) after reagents removal of rough concentrate produced by mixed flotation of chalcopyrite and galena, is usually adopted. However, as a result of tight symbiosis and the similar flotability of chalcopyrite and galena, the separation is difficult (Hu and Feng, 2006). There are 3 kinds of depressants for galena in the separation of chalcopyrite and galena concentrate,including dichromate, sulfite and combined depressants of organic or inorganic reagents (Wei, 2012). As dichromate would cause serious environmental pollution, it is gradually banned to be used in industry (Xu et al., 2017; Lin et al., 2017). what’s more, due to the need of acidic slurry, using sulfite is not conductive to the maintenance of equipment and stable production(Wang, 1999). As for the combined depressants, they also have disadvantages of complex pharmaceutical system and no ideal separation effect (Wei and Sun, 2008). Therefore, the development of new safe and effective depressants for galena is a research focus for researchers in the minerals processing (Chen, 2000). In this paper, a new type of organic depressant PD-1 is applied to the copper-lead separation process of ""copper increase and lead reduction"" using Z200 as the collector. In addition, the performances and mechanism of its depression to galena are studied emphatically."

"To date, several studies have been performed on the static mechanical properties of SLM-AlSi10Mg alloy. There have also been more recent studies on the relation between scan strategy, texture, and mechanical properties of SLM metals and composites. However, there is a huge knowledge gap in the available literature regarding texture and mechanical behavior of SLM-AlSi10Mg alloy under high strain rates. Therefore, in this study, dynamic mechanical behavior of AlSi10Mg_200C alloy manufactured by DMLS technique was investigated at high strain rates ranging from 900/s to 1700/s using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar. Texture using X-ray diffraction technique of the initial samples were measured. The yield strength, peak flow stress, and ductility increased in all samples with increase of strain rate. TEM studies have also revealed evidence of continuous dynamic recrystallization in grains after 900/s–1700/s strain-rate tests. A Taylor polycrystal crystal plasticity constitutive model was then developed to capture and predict the texture evolution and mechanical response under dynamic loading, using plastic work as a critical parameter for the onset of recrystallization.INTRODUCTION Additive manufacturing (AM) powder techniques are among the fastest advancing breakthroughs in manufacturing in recent years, defined by a bottom-up layer by layer process of joining with energy input from lasers or electron beam (Herzog et al., 2016; Gibson et al., 2015). Among alloys fabricated by SLM, AlSi10Mg is of high interest to industry and academia due to its low density, high specific strength and excellent corrosion resistance, making this alloy a viable contender for aerospace, automotive, and marine applications. Circumstances such as car crash or bird aircraft strike hazards subject potential additively manufactured AlSi10Mg parts to impact loadings. This drives an interest in understanding and predicting dynamic behaviour of these alloys. AlSi10Mg is the AM counterpart of A360 die-cast aluminum, which possess hypoeutectic microstructure (Li et al., 2015). Up to the present time, many studies have presented the mechanical properties of SLM-AlSi10Mg alloy. The mechanical properties and microstructure of AlSi10Mg produced by selective laser melting (SLM) or DMLS techniques can be controlled using different parameters, such as feedstock powder (Asgari et al., 2017), and process parameters (Olakanmi et al., 2015). The microstructure and mechanical properties of AlSi10Mg can also be controlled using post heat treatment after SLM process Li et al., 2016). The mechanical properties of SLM-AlSi10Mg are sensitive to strain rate and can both change under quasi-static (Rosenthal et al., 2017) and high strain rates (Asgari et al., 2018). However, a significant knowledge gap in available literature regarding modeling these behaviours, and especially micromechanical modeling of dynamic behaviour."

"Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. As a liquid-liquid extraction, solvent extraction involves contacting the aqueous PLS with organic extractant via mixing. Mixing is known to increase the interfacial area for mass transfer by decreasing the diffusion path length (Jussi et al.1997). EXPERIMENT Instruments and Reagents Reagent grade Acorga 5910 reagent was used in the experiment was supplied by Cytec (Current name Solvay), Ammonium peroxodisulfate and sulfuric acid were reagent grade obtained from Amazon. Butte, Montana holds a prestigious place in the history of mining, deemed “The Richest Hill on Earth,” containing a plethora of underground mines. The Orphan Boy/Orphan Girl underground mines, on the western side of Butte, operated from 1895-1956 producing zinc, lead, silver, and manganese. Today, the Orphan Boy mine is part of Montana Tech’s Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC) and the Orphan Girl mine houses the World Museum of Mining. Underground development in the Orphan Boy mine continues to progress as students from Montana Tech receive hands-on underground training; in addition, the UMEC is a multi-disciplinary research facility. Repeated underground blasting occurs in close proximity to old mine workings (wood supports installed circa 1950 or earlier). Research began to determine the impact of underground blasts on nearby pre-existing structures. Using the ISEE Field Practice Guidelines for Blasting Seismographs, one seismograph monitors the predominately-wooden structures to measure their response during each underground blast and one seismograph positioned on the surface to monitor surface structure response to the blast. This paper presents the findings of the research conducted to date for the project. The paper includes analysis of the research data, and conclusions determined from the research. Recommendations for the future work are included as well.

"Copper anode slime is a precious secondary source for the recovery of silver. However, current recovery process are constrained by either sever pollution or high cost. To cover the drawbacks of current process, this research employed a novel strategy by using the manganese dioxide as the oxidant in acid solution, which avoided the generation of sulfur dioxide while high silver extraction rate was achieved. The effects of manganese dioxide, sulfur acid concentration, stirring speed, temperature and leaching time on silver extraction rate were investigated. The silver recovery reached to 91.68% under the conditions of 1.2 g manganese, 2.0 mol/L H2SO4, 300 rpm, 80 °C and 6 h. INTRODUCTION Copper anode slime is generated from the electrolysis refining of copper and is extremely precious for its containing noble metal such as silver (Chatterjee, 1996; Amer, 2003; Yldrm et al., 2014; Syed, 2016; Wang et al., 2017). Therefore it is of great significance to extract silver from anode slime for the full utilization of resource. Pyrometallurgy is the most mature process for the extraction of silver because of its stability and adaptability (Hait et al., 2009; Zhao et al., 2010; Gao et al., 2017). However, it also suffers the drawbacks of high operating cost, low extraction rate of silver and severe pollution of smoke dust (usually containing lead and arsenic) (Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). To cover the drawbacks of pyrometallurgy process, more and more attentions are giving to the semi-hydrometallurgy process which usually includes a pretreatment process of sulphatising roast or low temperature oxidizing roasting (Tishchenko, 1964). After pretreatment, the refractory silver bearing phases (silver selenide, silver sulfide and silver) are converted into readily leached forms which are often extracted by ammonia, sodium sulfite in alkaline solution (Valiuniene et al., 2010; Wojciech, and Kitka, 2017). Despite its relatively high extraction rate and low investment, it still has the disadvantages of releasing harmful gases since the sulfur dioxide are generally generated in the pretreatment process. In addition, the use of ammonia can easily lead to a leaking into the atmosphere once not carefully dealt with (Aylmore and Muir, 2001). As for silver recovery by sulfite leaching, the consumption of sodium sulfite is rather high which often results in a pipe blocked (Yang et al., 2006)."

"A study was made of chemical and material compositions of the oxidized gold-bearing ore of the Kochkovskoe deposit. It was demonstrated that examined ore consisted mainly of quartz, carbonate and feldspar with a gold content of 2.2 g/t and a silver content of 6.1 g/t. By means of agitation leaching tests it was founded that about 79-80 % of gold can be extracted from ore using cyanide leaching solutions. The achieved high-speed dissolution rate of gold was due to its presence in a finely dispersed state (less than 2.73 µm), which was confirmed by the research of Uralmekhanobr. It was proposed that the ore can be processed by heap leaching process using cyanide leach solutions. Technological studies on the modeling of the heap leaching process were initially carried out in percolators with a capacity of 5 kg on agglomerated ore. It was preliminary established that agglomeration should be carried out at a cement consumption of 12-16 kg/t, with the moisture content in pellets reaching up to 10-12 %. The best percolation leaching results can be obtained with ore crushed to the size of -20 mm. The maximum extraction of gold to the solution was 79-80 % while the L:S ratio reached 1.2-1.4:1.In cooperation with the research center of OJSC ""Berezovsky mine"" a semi-industrial heap leaching test was accomplished. The result of a test performed was an extraction of 78.5 % of Au and 21 % of Ag from ore to a pregnant solution. This extraction degree was achieved at a L:S ratio 0.9: 1. On the ground of results obtained, a technical regulation was developed for design of the heap leaching plant with the capacity of 500 thousand tons of ore per year.INTRODUCTION The ore of the Kochkovskoe deposit represents an important reserve of gold in the Zabaikal region. Of the upmost interest are oxidized ores, the processing of which can be carried out by heap leaching (HL) with cyanide solutions. "In Kazakhstan, there is a unique sulphide copper deposit, in the ores containing the natural isotope of osmium-187 (more than 90 %). In the pyrometallurgical processing of concentrates for the target metal, osmium is mainly sublimated, with wet cleaning of metallurgical gases (dust and gas mixture) 40 % of it together with rhenium passes into washing solutions (wash acid). On the basis of this acid, the production of ammonium perrhenate was organized at the enterprise of the RSE ""Zhezkazganredmet"" and for the first time in the world practice - the isotope of osmium-187. However, the degree of its recovery from solutions does not exceed 8 % of the amount supplied with the charge or 25 % of the amount that was received for extraction. But the bulk of it (~ 75 %) remains in the raffinate, discharged to sewage treatment plants (wastewater). The studies presented in this work are aimed at solving the problem of osmium isotope-187 extracting from wastewater, which are a potential source of increasing metal production in Kazakhstan. The aim of this work is the development and scientific justification of osmium deposition regimes from wastewater using such reagents as thiosulfate and sodium sulphide. The influence of various physicochemical factors on the precipitation of the osmium was studied and optimal conditions for its maximum transition to sediment were chosen. An original method for obtaining osmium concentrate in the presence of sodium thiosulfate with the addition of potassium iodide from a new type of wastewater - man-made ammonia solutions has been developed. These solutions were combined mother liquors of solid-phase stripping operations and dissolution of pulp of crude ammonium perrhenate. On the basis of the obtained results, a settling technology for extraction of the osmium from man-made ammonia rhenium-containing solutions was introduced at RSE ""Zhezkazganredmet"". It should be noted that the degree of extraction of osmium, depending on its concentration in solutions entering on the settlement, and taking into account the addition of sulfuric acid, will vary from 60 to 90 %. The recovery of osmium during the test period was 58 %."

"It is relatively well-established in the literature that the flotation of calcium minerals using fatty acids as collector is very sensitive to the process water composition. In particular, hard waters have often been reported to strongly reduce the target mineral recoveries due to the formation of insoluble compounds such as calcium and / or magnesium dioleate, thus reducing the amount of collector available for adsorption onto the mineral surface. In this study, the flotation of a fluorite pre-concentrate was performed with tall oil, an industrial collector essentially containing fatty acids. The tests were performed in a variety of synthetic waters to simulate multiple degrees of water hardness, and to differentiate the role of magnesium and calcium ions on the flotation performance. The flotation tests revealed that, under the studied conditions, a significant difference between flotation in calcium-rich and magnesium-rich waters was observed, suggesting strong ion-specific effects in the system. Specifically, calcium-rich waters slightly improved the fluorite recovery, whereas magnesium-rich waters caused a decrease in recovery by as much as 20%. This paper is focused on the flotation kinetics aspect of the system. This approach highlighted the interesting finding that calcium ions did not simply increase the fluorite recovery, but also significantly increased its flotation kinetics. The magnesium ions, on the other hand, had the exact opposite effect.INTRODUCTIONAs the mining industry is facing an increasing number of issues related to its fresh water consumption, the idea of using alternative water sources for mineral beneficiation is gaining significant momentum. As a result, a proper understanding of the role of water chemistry in flotation is becoming more and more urgent, leading to an increasing number of studies on this topic."

Pile foundations are extensively used in the construction of various types of superstructures, including tall buildings, bridges, freeways and offshore structures. A fully constrained tip embedment such as a rock-socket offers an attractive solution for achieving significant tip resistance and improving the load-carrying capability of the foundation element. In profiles with very soft surficial soil, rock-socketing often provides the only reliable source of axial and lateral resistance. In preparation of a large-scale testing program on rock-socketed piles at UC Irvine (UCI) geared towards studying the magnitude of shear amplification at the rock-soil boundary of pile foundations, a pre-test model-scale experiment was executed in the UCI Structural Laboratory. The objective of the model-scale experiment was to iterate and validate the test setup, study the influence of important boundary conditions, assess instrumentation techniques and sensor placement, and to gain preliminary insight into the small-scale specimen non- linearity. In addition, this model-scale study provides ample opportunity to compare lateral performance parameters with analytically predicted lateral load behavior using traditional soil resistance functions and limit state analyses and explore new techniques for the derivation of soil resistance functions. The pile specimen had a pile diameter (D) of 10 inches and a total pile length of 125 inches. The pile was embedded in a 40 inch simulated rock socket overlain by 52 inch of medium dense sand (DR~50%). The pile extended 32 inches above the soil surface, where cyclic lateral loading was applied. The pile was installed in a laminar metal frame box with inside dimensions of 39 inches in width (W), 73 inches in length (L) and 86.1 inches in height (H) as shown in Figure 1. During testing, the box was restrained using a rigid bracing system consisting of concrete reaction blocks, wooden braces and steel girders.

This article focuses on the appropriate application of subsurface investigation methods for transmission structures, which are typically designed to resist lateral rather than vertical loads. Currently, the three methods used most often for the subsurface investigation of transmission structures in the field are the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), the Cone Penetration Test (CPT), and the Flat Dilatometer Test (DMT). Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages, and each is more applicable to some scenarios than to others. To gain a better understanding of these test methods and the implications of using them for various kinds of applications, a comparison study was conducted in the field in Maryland, for three boring locations. Each boring location was explored using each of the three tests as stated. The results of the tests and lessons learned are presented and compared, and these comparisons show that the three test methods agree on the majority of the findings. The results from each test method were also used to derive key parameters such as the soil friction angle for given foundation designs considered in order to establish a clear basis for comparison. Recommendations for performing transmission structure subsurface investigations are made in order to optimize the use of each method and thereby optimizing subsequent foundation designs. INTRODUCTION For overhead transmission structures, the most important structural requirement for determining the foundation design differs from the requirement for other structures such as buildings and bridges in accord with the conditions the transmission structures will need to withstand. In addition to the ability to bear a given vertical load consistent with its use, the foundation must bear lateral loads arising from wind and other weather conditions. The foundation types used most often for overhead transmission monopole structures include concrete drilled pier, vibratory caisson, and direct embedment. In order to determine an appropriate and even an optimum foundation design for any given set of conditions, an appropriate subsurface investigation method or approach is needed. Currently, the standard penetration test (SPT), the cone penetration test (CPT), and the flat dilatometer test (DMT) are the three most commonly used subsurface investigation methods.

"Phosphate ore is one of the most significant secondary resources for rare earth elements (REEs), and Florida phosphate is of particular interest due to its much higher ratio of heavy REEs, especially yttrium. Analyses of numerous samples from different phosphate processing streams in Florida showed that heavy REEs account for about 50% of the total REEs in Florida phosphate with yttrium accounting for approximately 30%. It was estimated that the amount of yttrium from US phosphate processing could meet the world demand for this critical element. This research aimed at recovering both REEs and phosphorus from a phosphate flotation tails. This tails is composed of mainly silica and phosphate with a small fraction of heavy minerals including monazite and xenotime. Since the specific gravity of silica is 2.6 versus 3.2 for phosphate and 4.5-5 for rare earth minerals, pre-concentration of the minerals of interest by gravity separation was investigated first. A pilot scale shaking table was used in this study. One pass gravity concentration achieved a shaking table concentrate analyzing over 600 ppm REEs at about 40% recovery. Flotation of the shaking table concentrate resulted in a product containing 1809 ppm REEs and 26.37% P2O5 with corresponding recoveries of 73% and 82%. Sulfuric acid leaching at 75oC could recover over 60% REE and nearly all the P2O5. Higher REEs (>90%) recovery was achieved by conducting leaching at higher temperature with concentrated sulfuric acid. The phosphoric acid from leaching of the flotation concentrate is of superior quality compared with that generated from regular phosphate rock.INTRODUCTION Rare earths are a group of 17 elements including those of the lanthanum series, as well as the non-lanthanides, yttrium and scandium. These elements have very specific critical uses in a multitude of markets. For example, lanthanum is used as a catalyst in breaking down crude oil to produce gasoline, diesel and jet fuel and neodymium is the core magnetic component in high-strength magnets for electric car batteries, wind turbines and hard disk drives. Rare earths are also essential for many military applications. Many of these applications have no substitute materials and the move to green technologies has dramatically increased their demand."

"It is well known that it takes some time for the solid phase to completely dissolve upon melting, especially inside the defects of insoluble particles, e.g. oxides. Until then the oxides remain active solidification substrates in the case of subsequent solidification. It is also known that ultrasonic melt treatment causes grain refinement through activation and dispersion of solidification substrates (one of the mechanisms) and also accelerates the dissolution of solid metal in the melt. In this study we combine these effects and demonstrate that the introduction of an alloy rod into the matrix melt of the same composition results in significant grain refinement, this effect being increased by the ultrasonic vibration of the rod. The achieved grain size is comparable to that obtained by a standard Al–Ti–B grain refiner. All samples were cast using a standard TP-1 mould to enable correct comparison. The effect of the temperature range of the rod introduction, as well as the effect of ultrasonic vibrations are discussed.INTRODUCTION The fact that by introducing solid metal into the melt one can achieve structure refinement is rather well known. As early as in the 1930s–1950s a series of papers and patents have been published, showing the benefits for grain refinement when dissolving solid metal in the melt before solidification (Danilov and Neimark, 1938; Scheil, 1956). Later on this way of structure refinement was developed further and dubbed “suspension casting” or introduction of “internal chills” (Madyanov, 1969; Zatulovsky, 1981). The solid metal was added in a form of cut wire, cut sheet, or powder, with the resulting grain refining, elimination of columnar grain structure in ingots and castings of steel, copper and aluminium alloys. The underlying mechanisms have been suggested as (1) rapid cooling of the melt due to the latent heat consumption upon melting of the solid metal with the resultant melt undercooling and (2) introduction of many solidification substrates in the form of crystal fragments and active non-metallic inclusions (Danilov & Neimark, 1938; Balandin, 1973). A number of patents have been filed where either the same solid alloy or a master alloy with additions (e.g. Ti for Al alloy) is introduced in the amounts up to 50% (typically less than 10%) into the melt close to the liquidus temperature (Schmidt, 1966; Talbot & Soller, 1973, Krupp, 1974; Bondarev, 1979). The main reason that this technique is not widely used in industry is the possible incomplete dissolution of the solid parts introduced into the melt with ensuing inhomogeneous as-cast structure and potential defects. Also the selection of the temperature range where the technology works the best is not clear."

"From 2011–2016, there were 1,511 documented injuries, including 7 fatalities, from ground falls in underground coal mines in the United States. The majority of these ground-fall injuries were not caused by a major roof collapse, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Roof screen can significantly reduce the number of these injuries and has been widely used in underground coal mines for surface control. Because of the potential of reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is further evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in Pittsburgh, PA.The load-displacement characteristics of an 8-ft x 12-ft panel of 8-gauge welded screen were evaluated using a newly designed, large laboratory screen test frame with multiple load pull locations. This screen was tested in a configuration that simulates current installation practices in U.S. coal mines. In this study, the effects of varying the number and position of the load pull location on the screen performance were evaluated. Ultimately, the type of information obtained in this and similar studies can be used to aid in developing wire roof screen design criteria and to assist mine operators in the selection and use of roof screen in underground mines.INTRODUCTIONThe large majority of ground-fall injuries are caused by falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Various controls are currently being used in mines to control this surface rock, including the use of wire roof screen. In mines where wire roof screen has been installed, injuries from rock falls have been reduced dramatically (Robertson and Hinshaw, 2001). Roof screen has the potential to prevent hundreds of injuries caused by the fall of small rocks between permanent roof supports (Compton et al., 2007). "The purpose of the study is to study the feasibility of using sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphinate (DDP) to enhance the recovery of platinum group elements from low-grade refractory copper-nickel ores characterized by a portion of nickel and platinum group elements (PGEs) locked in the dominant sulfide mineral — pyrrhotite. These ore characteristics dictate the need to produce a bulk PGE-containing sulfide concentrate due to the difficulties of producing selective concentrates without a significant loss of the metals.New data on the adsorption and flotation performance of DDP-containing collectors were obtained by measuring the electrode potential, hydrophobicity of the sulfide mineral surfaces and by means of extraction spectrophotometry and flotation studies. The interaction between DDP, pyrrhotite, and pentlandite leads to the formation of surface hydrophobic layers consisting mainly of disulfide and a small amount of metal compounds. These adsorption layers are formed by the reaction with butyl xanthate. In the case of cooperite, DDP reacts with the surface, forming not only disulfide, as in the case of butyl xanthate, but also a complex platinum compound. DDP-containing agents demonstrate stronger collecting properties with respect to sulfide minerals of copper-nickel ores compared to butyl xanthate, which is explained by a stronger hydrophobizing effect and foaming properties.The addition of a combination of DDP-containing agents and butyl xanthate at a ratio of 3:1 for the recovery of sulfides and PGEs in the bulk flotation of copper-nickel ore made it possible to improve the recovery of Ni, Pt, and Pd by 13.6, 9.2, and 9.4%, respectively, relative to the recovery achieved in flotation with butyl xanthate.Bulk flotation with the addition of a composition of DDP-containing agents and butyl xanthate allows the most complete recovery of all valuable elements and is the only technologically feasible method for processing of lowgrade ores, when it is impossible to produce without loss high-grade selective concentrates suitable for smelting."

"In this article, research on the beneficiation process for a carbon containing copper-molybdenum deposit in Henan province has been carried out. Flotation behavior of copper-molybdenum mixed flotation and separate flotation in the systems of different collectors and depressants, and the influence of different flowsheets on the copper-molybdenum separation have been investigated by actual ore flotation tests, The separation problem of copper-molybdenum for a carbon-containing copper molybdenum ore has been solved.INTRODUCTION In this paper, technological mineralogy, small experiment of flotation recovery of copper Molybdenum ore, and expansion experiment of mineral recovery of copper Molybdenum ore are introduced. (1) The results of process mineralogyshow that the content of copper is 0.42%, molybdenum is 0.021% in the raw ore, they mainly exist in the form of sulfide, with low oxidation rate. (2) The results of flotation tests show that the combination of butyl xanthate and isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate reagents is effective collector of copper-molybdenum mixed flotation for carbon copper molybdenum, (3) When the grinding fineness is -0.074 mm taking 71%, and regrinding fineness is -0.038 mm taking 85%, the flowsheet of first copper-molybdenum mixed flotation and then regrinding rough concentrate and last separation flotation of copper and molybdenum was adopted, which realized the effective separation of copper and molybdenum for carbon-containing copper molybdenum ore. Good flotation indexes were gained with copper concentrate containing 20.96% copper and copper recovery 90.06%, and molybdenum concentrate containing 46.78% molybdenum with molybdenum recovery 72.68%. (4) The seven days average concentration index of scale-up the continuous dressing experiment is as follows, the copper content in copper concentrate is 20.16% and the recovery is 89.61%; the molybdenum content in molybdenum concentrate is 24.58% and the recovery rate is 74.09%."

"We studied the mechanism of structural and chemical transformations of columbite, tantalite, zircon and feldspar surface during the treatment by high – power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) using the methods of X - ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), analytical electron microscopy (SEM - EDX), Kelvin probe force microscopy and flotation experiments. According to XPS and SEM - EDX data, major changes in the atoms chemical state of investigated minerals surface are related with formation and modification of functional cover and changing in concentration (% at.) of hydroxyl groups on the mineral surface, leading to increase in the contrast of technological properties of the rare metals minerals. Research has identified the optimal parameters of HPEMP - treatment of rare - earth minerals Npuls ? 104, Ttreatment ? 100 sec. improving the selectivity of the flotation separation of columbite and zircon. The difference in mineral recovery into the froth (? e) before and after HPEMP - treatment was about 11 % and 24.5 %, respectively. No significant increase was observed in the flotation activity of feldspar. This study's findings demonstrate the effectiveness of HPEMP - treatment in inducing a controlled change in the structural and chemical properties of rare - earth minerals and improving the process efficiency for the processing of rougher tantalum - niobium gravity concentrates.INTRODUCTIONThe importance of improving the processing methods of tantalum-niobium ores and concentrates is explained by the mineralogical properties of rare - earth ores. These are properties such as the variable mineral, chemical, and grain size composition, complex morphometric properties, and the dissemination of ore mineral grains of micro - and nanometric size. Iron oxide and hydroxide films on the mineral surfaces neutralize the surface physicochemical and absorption properties of the minerals. Both in Russia and globally, nonconventional (non - mechanical) methods are being developed based on physicochemical, electrochemical, and pulsed energy impacts to improve the efficiency of disintegration and liberation processes of disseminated mineral complexes and to enhance the contrast of the structural, chemical, and technological (floatability) properties of refractory ores. "In general the electric pulse treatment is composed from two processes – electric pulse grinding and electric explosive (electric discharging) activation. The electric pulse grinding with the effect of selective destruction refers to a major slag fraction, more that 2-5 mm, when a one can see a physical prerequisites for electrical breakdown of the slag particles. The electric pulse treatment of slag is considered as an additional operation in the technological scheme extraction of non-ferrous metals from copper smelting slags in addition with mechanical grinding, flotation enrichment and acid leaching. Studies of the reprocessability of pelletized slag have shown the possibility of higher extracting non-ferrous metals via flotation after electric pulse disintegration (EPD) treatment. By using EPD of slag pellets, it is possible to increase the non-ferrous metal yield to concentrate by 18-24%.INTRODUCTION The use of the explosive effect of the plasma discharge channel at electrical breakdown of a solid at a pulsed high voltage is the physical basis of the electric pulse method of destruction of geomaterials (Vorobiev et al., 1971; Andres, 1995; Semkin et al., 1995). The flowing of a pulsed current in the discharge channel is accompanied by a sharp increasing of plasma’s temperature and pressure, leading to a supersonic expanding of the discharge channel, the formation in the solid of intensive mechanical tension field, spreading of cracks, and eventually, to the destruction of the solid. Fragmentation and grinding of ore and mineral aggregates by electric pulse method due to a number of specific physical mechanisms of power load and crack formation, belonging only to this method, is different by high selectivity of destruction. This ensures better liberation of grains of individual minerals and their better preservation from destruction and less formation of a slurry output. These features creates the prerequisites for a more complete extraction of a useful mineral in the concentrate during ore dressing, to improve the quality of concentrate. In contradistinction to mechanical methods, electric pulse technology does not contaminate the product with instrumental metal, material of lining and grinding bodies. The possibility simply and in a wide range to change the dynamic load character allows to regulate the granulometric composition of the product of grinding, to obtain a narrower class of product size than is possible with mechanical grinding. The product of electric pulse grinding is characterized by less roundness and large specific surface area of grains due to the trait, that a new surface is formed in the process of splitting during the expanding of cracks. The degradation product has increased sorption and reactivity in chemical reactions. Liberation of the mineral inclusions particle better corresponds to their initial natural state in the rock and this is the great importance for the study of mineral raw materials."
