"In February 2018, drawn in part by the states’ proud mining heritage, SME took its Annual Conference & Expo to Minneapolis, MN for the first time. More than 5,000 people and 554 exhibitors converged on the Minneapolis Convention Center for three days of networking, exhibiting and technical sessions.The state’s mining legacy, one that continues today, is fueled in large part by its vast iron ore resources in the northern part of the state. The historical significance of the mines in the Mesabi Range, otherwise known as the Iron Range north of Lake Superior, cannot be understated. “Mining is a way of life here,” said U.S. Congressman Rick Nolan of Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District. A native of the Iron Range, the three-term U.S. congressman was one of the featured speakers of the opening keynote session. “We like to think we contribute enormously to the well-being of this country and the world. We were the source of the iron ore and steel that helped win two world wars. And we like to think that we are part of the progress that has taken place in the United States ever since.” Nolan kicked off the keynote sessionthat focused on innovation and its part in the mining industry. The session included Rene Aquilar, vice president of corporate affairs and sustainability, Antofagasta Minerals Group; Bob Anderson, vice president for research and development, 3M; Rolf Weberg, executive director, Natural Resources Research Institute, University of Minnesota-Duluth and Christopher Beck, executive vice president and president, Nalco Water. The panel session looked at U.S. and global minerals production, and the importance of the United States to maintain a major role in the minerals industry, both as a producer and as a technology leader. The panel also touched on the global mining industry and the issues that impact mining around the world. Sustainability, the use of water in mining and earning a social license to operate were among the topics discussed by the panel.Speaking of the importance of mining, Nolan conceded that talking about the benefits of mining to the crowded auditorium at the SME conference might be akin to a preacher speaking to the choir, but, following the adage that all politics are local, he continued to illustrate his point by emphasizing the importance of mining to the Great Lakes.“A study by Homeland Security concluded that 13 percent of the nation’s GDP comes out of Lake Superior through the locks at Sault Ste. Marie and most of that is iron ore,” said Nolan. “That study found that, if those locks fail, it would create a national depression. It would put millions of people out of work. That ore and those minerals supply the steel mills, the auto industry, the heavy industrials. They are the heart of our economy. The study concluded that if the states that make up the Great Lakes were a nation, it would be the fourth largest economy in the world.”"

The operation of the U .S Metals Refining Company, USMR Co. is defined below by the description of a variety of unit processes and operations the author encountered during his tenure with the operation, 1955 - 1978. The operations discussed include: sampling and sweating of radiators, processing of Indian Coin, treatment of insulated wire, baghouse and converter dust treatment, blast furnace and converter operation, the electric arc furnace, antimony control, selenium and tellurium products, electrolyte liberation with soluble anodes, and the precious metals refinery. These operations, although peripheral to the primary copper production circuit, were critical to the company's technological and economic base.

IN this paper are presented the results of a complete statistical survey of the enrolment, courses and degrees, and the employment situation of recent graduates in all of the 46 institutions in the United States, including Alaska, and four of the six schools in Canada that grant degrees in mineral technology. The data were collected by the writer by means of a questionnaire in December, 1933, to which all the institutions, except one, replied. Included also are data of a similar study made by the writer in May, 1933, for the S. P. E. E. summer session of mining and metallurgical teachers at the University of Wisconsin and published in the Journal of Engineering Education for December. 1933. Some of the data of a paper of the writer's entitled, "The Trend of Mineral Engineering Student Enrolment in the United States," read at the A. I. M. E. meeting on Feb. 16. 1931, are given for comparison. Acknowledgment is made to all the administrative officers of the institutions who took the time from their busy lives to supply the in- formation asked for. "In many mineral processing plants ore is reclaimed from a stockpile using multiple feeders. The discharge from these feeders is combined onto a single conveyor from which total tonnage is measured. Typically, operators set feeder output ratios to adjust the proportion of total tonnage drawn from each feeder. From a process control perspective, this system is not easy to control because the response time of each feeder depends on the distance from the feeder to the weightometer. This paper proposes a simple and elegant process control strategy to manage feeder ratio changes and the associated long and varying process dead-times. Changes in feeder speed are delayed and filtered to compensate for transport delays between feeders. The strategy was evaluated by simulation and installed on a mill feed system.ResumenEn numerosas plantas procesadoras de minerales, el mineral es extraido desde una pila de almacenamiento usando varios alimentadores. A brief review of the silver industry is presented to set the stage for the analysis of the distribution of silver production by source from various types of mines in Canada and of the changing relationship between the total output of silver and the total output of base metals. The decline in the average grade of the Canadian mines is also discussed and a trend for the future is proposed. The report then examines in broader aspects the world primary silver production and concludes, in the section on outlook, that the effective supply in primary silver will grow at a rate significantly lower than the growth rate expected for base metals. A cumulative deficit of some 900 million ounces is projected for the period 1975-1980 and a further deficit of some 1,100 million ounces if projected for the 1980-to-1985 period.

Barite, the natural sulfate of barium (BaSO4), is the most important barium mineral. Normally it is white (opaque to translucent), but impurities sometimes render it yellow, gray, blue, brown, red, or black. Brown or red stains are commonly caused by iron oxide. Barite is unusually heavy (specific gravity, about 4.5); in fact, it is one of the heaviest of the nonmetallic minerals. It is brittle and fractures unevenly. The hardness of barite ranges from 2.5 to 3 but is usually about 3. It can be scratched by a copper coin. Pure barite contains 65.7 percent BaO and A.3 percent S03. Much of the crude barite ore mined, however, contains impurities; thus it has a lower content of barite and consequently less barium oxide. Commercial analyses show its total BaSO4 content. Barium also occurs in nature as the mineral witherite (BaCO3), which, however, is not common in the United States, and commercial deposits have been found only in California. Witherite is a yellowish-white, light-gray, or Kite mineral with a specific gravity of about 3, a hardness of 3 to 4, and an uneven to subconchoidal fracture.

"Abstract Helical piles have been used as anchors and for supporting lightly loaded structures as a method of underpinning, etc in the past. Recently, helical piles are being used to support new structures because of their simple installation process using relatively light and mobile equipment. This paper presents the results of evaluation and design performed for the temporary support of existing piers during a bridge rehabilitation project.INTRODUCTIONThe helical screw foundation was invented and patented by Alexander Mitchell in England in 1833. He installed screw piles to support lighthouses in the tidal basins of England. Many applications in the earlier years in the USA were in North Carolina and in Florida to support lighthouses (in coastal plain deposits). A lighthouse of similar foundation design is still in use at Key Biscayne, Florida.In the USA, the helical piles were reintroduced as foundation elements for electrical transmission towers. Helical piles were also used for anchoring guys of self supported towers and as tie-backs for excavation support systems. Typically, helical piles are being used for supporting lightly loaded buildings and for underpinning buildings undergoing distress as a means of remediation. The helical piles are not commonly used in the transportation industry.HELICAL PILESHelical pile is a segmented deep foundation system with helical bearing plates welded to a central steel shaft. Load is transferred from the shaft to the soil through these bearing plates. Central steel shafts are available in either a square shaft (Type SS) or a round shaft (Type RS). The Type SS series are available in 38 mm to 57 mm square sizes. The Type RS series are available in 73 mm to 114 mm diameter sizes. Type SS-RS combinations are also available for compression applications in soil conditions where dense/hard soils must be penetrated with softer/loose soils above the bearing strata.The leading segment consists of a shaft with one or more helical plates that are welded to the shaft. The plates vary in diameter from 203 mm to 355.5 mm and have a thickness of 9.5 mm or 13.7 mm. Typically the plate diameter increases from the bottom of the shaft upward. A helical bearing plate or helix is one pitch of a screw thread. All helices, regardless of their diameter, have a standard 76 mm pitch. Being a true helical shape, the helices do not auger into the soil but rather screw into it with minimal soil disturbance. Helical plates are generally spaced a distance of two to three times the diameter of the plate directly below in order for them to function independently as individual bearing elements. A typical detail of helical pile is shown on Figure 1."

Net Present Value Impact of Discount Rate The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method of valuations is universally used and accepted. The main criticism of the method is that it does not recognize the value of projects long life projects. This can be seen in the preceding graph where the present value of cash flows in later years are small for discount rates over about 10%. This graph covers a project that has a 25 year operating life. It is clear from the low height of the NPV bars at 10% and 15% in the last years of the project that an additional 25 years would add almost no value to total project NPV. As an example of this effect, an colleague undertook the evaluation of a pulp and paper project. The plant could be justified, but it was not possible to justify planting the trees as they took too long to grow and so had not appreciable NPV. The plant had to purchase wood to feed the plant.

On the preceding pages, operations of the four major producers of nickel today have been described. There are, however, other operations in the world that, while not as large, are still of importance to the over-all picture of the industry. Among these are the Finnish producer, Outokumpu Oy, a state-controlled company that operates the Kotlahti mine 200 miles northeast of Helsinki. The ore from this operation, which began production in 1959, is pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite, occurring as disseminations in the host rock and in breccias. The flowsheet of the 1500-tpd mill at Kotlahti follows standard practices of crushing, grinding, and flotation to produce a pentlandite-pyrrhotite concentrate and a copper concentrate, both of which are shipped to the smelter at Harjavalta.

UNLIKE most previous Howe lecturers, I had not the good fortune to be associated with Henry Marion Howe, nor to be directly one of his students. Yet, through his writings, he has been my teacher, as he has of all American metallurgists. Instructive as his writings are-I use the present tense because Howe thought so keenly and reasoned so surely, seeing clearly, as if by intuition, what was hazy to lesser minds, that his writings are still vital-it is not, those books and papers, nor even the minds he trained in his classes, that were his most outstanding service. It was the spirit of Howe in his: approach to the problems of metallurgy, his broad-mindedness and fair-ness, his recognition of the need for theories and hypotheses to explain metallurgical phenomena, his willingness to use them as servants, as well as his questioning attitude-his refusal to accept them as masters-that comprise his greatest service. This most thoroughly warrants the honor the Institute pays each year to his memory. These traits I so respect and honor in any man that I glory in this opportunity to do reverence to him in whom they were so notably united.

The austenitic and ferritic stainless steels do not undergo any phase transformation that induces very fine grains in the product through thermomechanical processing as practiced in most other steels. Considerable grain refinement can be achieved by intense multistage deformation descending through warm to cold working; notably multi-axial forging of bulk material can attain high strains with diminished risk of cracking. Hot working to improve ductility yields finer grain sizes as the T is reduced and strain rate E raised; increased strain has limited effect due to the steady state regime. Ferritic steels develop subgrains with size diminishing as E rises and T falls with the advantage of retained strain hardening; recrystallization delivers grains several times the cell size. In austenitic steels, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) provides finer grains at higher E and lower T with a lower limit due to intergranular cracking. The DRX grains contain a strengthening substructure that can easily be retained by quenching; if static recrystallization is allowed to occur the grain size rises markedly. Multistage rolling with diminishing T is able to provide grain refinement to the same degree as straining at the finishing T yet provides better ductility. grains on recrystallization. As a result of the strain induced transformation to martensite, small subzero deformations of austenitic or duplex steels produce very high dislocation densities that yield marked grain refinement when they revert upon reheating.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the 177,000-acre Secesh study area; most of the area had been proposed as wilderness. Bureau personnel mapped and sampled several hundred mine and prospect workings; 1,715 rock, soil, and placer samples were taken during the investigation. The study area is centered about 25 mi east-northeast of McCall, Idaho, in the Payette National Forest. Five mining districts extend into or are adjacent to the study area. There have been more than 3,000 mining claims located inside the study area, 884 are current. In excess of $17 million (historical value) in placer and lode gold has reportedly been produced from the Warren district alone. The study area contains gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, tungsten, and antimony. At least six properties that would be in the proposed wilderness contain gold resources; more than 18 million tons averaging 0.038 oz/ton gold have been identified. Additional resources may be located at 4 other localities. The 4th of July mine is currently producing gold/silver/lead ore. Similar resources may be located on at least 3 other properties. Placer samples from the study area contained up to 0.34 oz gold/yd3 ($120/yd3). The samples are representative of relatively small occurrences and do not constitute resources; small quantities of gold may be recovered by recreational placer miners.

In this paper it is argued that we are entering a new mining era, based on considerably more challenging orebodies as we rapidly expand minerals production by exploiting previously uneconomic deposits. Rapidly increasing production costs cannot be sustained by continually increasing commodity prices, as illustrated by the recent downturn in the industry.Driven by reduction in grade, requiring the processing of 50 to 100 per cent more ore to recover the same amount of metal, often accompanied by finer grain structure - necessitating a finer product size and more challenging recovery - the productivity of the mining industry is dropping in real terms. The author suggests that tweaking current technologies and relying on economies of scale will not turn the industry around, but rather a switch to considerably more efficient processing is required.It is imperative to utilise the properties of the orebody, especially in terms of variability, in revolutionising our processing techniques. Our new mantra may be æselective mass mining with flexible processingÆ. This paper explores how this may be implemented using current technology and equipment in order to change the cost profile of the new mining industry. Orebody knowledge, based on the underlying process drivers, rather than proxies, is required. These properties and their variability will need to be propagated into the orebody through utilising the geological data rather than smoothing block averages, which destroys information on variability.Novel flexible circuit designs are presented that can respond to a wide variability in ore properties and throughput requirements in order to slash processing costs and energy utilisation, while enhancing overall recovery. The success of these circuits will be based on an ability to predict at both design stage and in everyday processing the variable ore properties, which is dependent upon reliable orebody knowledge that caries variability and underlying processing properties.CITATION:Powell, M S, 2013. La finalización de la estimación de reservas de un modelo de mina cuestiona la asertividad del modelo de Mina para la planeación minera. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la Reconciliación como la comparación real histórica de tonelaje, leyes y contenido fino estimado, entre el modelo de mina y planta concentradora. La reconciliación permite conocer y ajustar mediante el uso de factores, la planeación mensual y anual de los siguientes años de la operación minera, y así cumplir con los compromisos mensuales asumidos de envío de contenido fino desde mina. Así también se muestra el proceso que sigue la explotación minera a tajo abierto en Toquepala, las variables que influyen en la variación de la reconciliación y algunas pautas a considerar para minimizar estos errores de reconciliación entre mina y concentradora.

During research on mainly the weathering of kimberlite, it became evident that its mineralogical composition is an important factor in the complex process of physical and chemical disintegration. The mineralogy of tuffisitic kimberlite breccias from two localities, the Cullinan and Venetia mines, is compared with special reference to the occurrence of associated clay minerals. The clay mineral composition influences the engineering properties of these rock types. It is illustrated how the presence of swelling clay components can be confirmed by ethylene glycol treatment and chlorite minerals by heat treatment using X-ray diffraction. Smectites are present in both tuffisitic kimberlites, dominant at Venetia while chlorite is more frequent at Cullinan. More tuffisitic kimberlite breccias samples from venetia were also characterized. It was found that kimberlite disintegration is correlated with the presence and abundance of smectite.

Extractive metallurgy techniques currently employed to recover silver from primary ores and secondary scrap were reviewed and evaluated to identify and delineate metallurgical problems whose resolution would increase the supply of silver from domestic materials. The survey revealed that practically all primary silver is recovered by froth flotation concentration of various types of ores, followed by smelting and refining of the separate lead, copper, and zinc concentrates. Silver losses during the complex processing are, with rare exception, inconsequential. Furthermore, any silver production gain from base metal ores, which contribute about two-thirds of the total primary silver, is directly dependent on improvement in the market for the base metals. Statistical data on new and old silver scrap are wholly inadequate to make reliable conclusions about scrap processing problems and the possibility of increasing the recovery of silver from the many forms of secondary silverbearing materials. The available information indicates (1) that efficient silver reclamation practices are employed by the larger users of silver, and (2) that recovery of additional secondary silver involves solution of problems of collection rather than of processing. Several possibilities exist for limited increases in silver production from primary ores by improvement in metallurgical practices. Specifically, research is needed to (1) solve the problem of recovering silver from the copper ores of the Copper Range district, Michigan; and (2) devise economically feasible methods for recovery of silver from presently marginal or submarginal ores that because of grade, location, and frequently complex nature cannot presently be exploited by conventional techniques.
