Electrowon tungsten powders were investigated with respect to consolidation, fabrication, and mechanical properties. Sheet, 0.03 inch thick, was produced and its tensile strength measured between 250° and 1,935° C. The large particle size of electrowon tungsten effectively precluded sintering to a density sufficient to allow hot working to sheet or bar. The powders were consolidated by die pressing to 70-percent density, sheathing in molybdenum, and high-energy-rate extruding to either round or sheet bar of 100-percent density. The material was then rolled conventionally to sheet. The mechanical properties of the sheet prepared from the electrowon powders compared favorably with those reported in the literature for sheet prepared from commercially produced hydrogen-reduced powder.

LARGE copper whiskers (-100 p) of 11111 orientation were tested in a floor-model Instron testing machine, at liquid nitrogen temperature. (Testing methods will appear elsewhere.) Whiskers deformed by twinning after some initial deformation. A load-elongation curve at the onset of twinning is reproduced in Fig. 1. Twinning was confirmed by taking a back-reflection Laue picture, using a slit colli-mator, which showed distinct splitting of reflections. The tensile stress reached just before twinning is about 1.4 x 107 g per sq cm (-7.0 x106 g per sq cm—resolved shear stress) which drops to 1.2 x107 g per sq cm (-6 x 106 g per sq cm—resolved). This twinning stress is about five to ten times larger than the value for bulk single crystals of copper deformed at 77°K (-106 g per sq cm—resolved). Twinning models based on Cottrell-Bilby's pole mechanism are discussed in detail by Venables.' In the present work a mechanism based on the idea of failure of a Lomer-Cottrell barrier by recombination will be proposed. An L-C barrier may fail either by recombination or by dissociation.3 Fig. 2 provides the necessary information. It shows that the stress necessary to break such a barrier is about 1.8 x 107 g per sq cm by recombination and 4 x 107 g per sq cm by dissociation at 77°K. The twinning stress reached by whiskers is comparable to the stress level required for failure of an L-C barrier by recombination. The grade of ore at Marvel Loch mine is directly related to the presence or absence of shear zones and quartz-sulfide-rich hornblende (¦ diopside) veining within areas of plagioclase alteration. An experienced geologist can identify these features in hand specimen. Practical rules have been developed to assist this visual identification. The structural sites and styles of alteration and veining most conducive to gold mineralisation have also been determined. The work has enabled a better understanding of the geological controls on mineralisation at Marvel Loch, and has clarified geological understanding for optimisation of grade control modeling, ore block mark-ups, and minimisation of ore loss and dilution during excavation. In addition to this, it has enabled a detailed understanding of mine scale structural controls, geometry and relative grade relationships.

Two house trailers and a modem modular house, all pillar-supported with cantilevered perimeters, were monitored for structural response to vibrations from surface coal mine blasts. Due to the large blast site distances, peak particle velocities measured in the ground beside the houses did not exceed 0.32 ips, and airblasts did not exceed 106 dB. However, the structures responded significantly to the ground vibrations, with maximum high-comer amplification factors as high as 8.5 in the horizontal directions. Vertical structural responses were as high as 10 times the vertical peak particle velocities in the ground, but appeared to be driven more by horizontal ground motions. No measurable airblast responses were observed. The natural frequencies of the structures ranged from 5 to 10 Hz.

Since the promulgation of the MINER Act and the follow-up changes to the regulations governing mine seal construction and maintenance, mine operators must be acutely aware of the atmosphere in sealed mine areas and prepared to deploy control technologies when the conditions are warranted. On Site Gas Systems1 in Newington, Connecticut was awarded a contract by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to construct a novel in-mine nitrogen (N2) generation plant using pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology. PSA technology utilizes carbon molecular sieve material and pressure to adsorb oxygen (O2) molecules while allowing N2 molecules to pass through the sieve material. The prototype PSA unit was tested at the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) where a 62,000 ft3 area of the mine was rendered inert during a series of two tests. The resultant data were then used to construct a CFD simulation of both injection tests. In addition, O2 depletion and gas leakage rates were quantified in the model and were compared to actual values. Once the model was calibrated, the sealed mine area was doubled and simulations were made with various injection rates and injection site locations to determine the impact on the time needed to render this area inert. This paper presents an overview of the PSA plant, the details of the gas injection tests and CFD modeling work.

The details in small-scale variability of the geological occurrence and chemical composition of ferromanganese crusts are not yet well understood, although the northwestern Pacific seamounts are believed to be among the most promising areas for rare metal resources. Our belief is that geological observations and geochemical analyses are still insufficient for economic evaluation or for discussion of depositional processes and environments. Our team, composed of geologists, mineralogists, geochemists, physical engineers, and microbiologists has attempted to utilize an ROV for in-situ measurement and for sampling of undisturbed and uncontaminated ferromanganese crusts at three typical seamounts in the NW Pacific near the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone. The first ROV geological survey of ferromanganese crusts was successfully completed, and the ROV proved to be the most powerful, efficient and elegant method to date. The collected samples (more than total 1 ton of crusts, at more than 100 sites along a total of approximately 10 km of survey lines) were most suitable to analyze water-depth dependency and secular variation of their composition. The intact surfaces of crusts, collected without the usual abrasion caused by dredging, were also valuable for microbial study of Mn oxidizing bacteria. The ROV sampling devices, however, can be improved with further sophisticated drills or rock saw blades in the future.

Introduction Elevated zinc concentrations are observed in groundwater within alluvium adjacent to Silver Creek east of Park City, Utah. The study area is located in a small valley one and one-half miles northeast of Park City, Utah in Summit County, Utah (Figure 1). Although surface water concentrations in Silver Creek are typically less than 1 mg/l, groundwater concentrations have been measured as high as 85 mg/l in a near neutral pH environment. The elevated zinc concentrations in groundwater result from several factors including: (1) dissolution of zinc from tailings exposed at the surface and within the alluvium, (2) oxidizing conditions created by surface/ground-water exchange, and (3) ideal geochemical conditions for the dissolution of zinc-containing minerals. These ideal conditions include readily soluble minerals, available anions for complexation, and lack of available surface adsorption sites.

"In the Hydrometallurgical processes, the presence of the so-called "crud" is a constant challenge in solvent extraction. Crud is a stable emulsion which forms along the interface between the aqueous and organic phase. The spread is influenced by the following parameters: first, wind blows the dust and impurities into the open sedimentation tanks. Second, the undissolved solids such as sand transported in the PLS causing problems in conjunction with incorrect agitator design.The crud fraction can decisively impact the efficiency of the hydrometallurgical extraction because the phase interface can constitute a large fraction and the sedimentation tanks cannot react flexibly to it. In the downstream process of the series-connected sedimentation tanks, they are thus all contaminated with crud. At the same time, the necessary mass transport is significantly impeded at the phase boundary between organic phase and aqueous phase due to the crud formation.The transfer of the organic phase into the electrolysis cell can result in a "burnout" of the cathode. The carryover of this electrolyte into the extraction can cause problems with the pH regulation. The carry-over of the organic components into the raffinate also leads to contamination of the leaching circuit. The continuous treatment of the crud with a 3-phase decanter centrifuge is extremely effective in combating this problem. This technology splits all three phases from each other and they are consequently continuously separated. All subsequent process steps exhibit a stable, uniform effectiveness. The main advantage for the customer is that fluctuations in the process are eliminated and the organic phase can be recirculated back to the extraction. The recycling of the solvent alone justifies the investment in less than 6 months as examples from South Africa and Chile show.To operate solvent recovery in daily operation fully automated online at the optimum limit, the decanter centrifuge is equipped with a concentration-dependent pond adjustment called DControl® by this means, we can guarantee our customers the maximum possible solvent recovery and minimize the solvent costs in this process step. This system is presented in detail in this paper."

This paper presents the results from the investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard rock underground narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground narrow-vein hard rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method. Particle size distribution showed a higher generation of fine product, − 2 mm, by thermal fragmentation compared with selective blasting by 31%. The Bond work index for thermal ore (12.62 kWh/t) is half to that of the blasted ore value (25.32 kWh/t). The average grindability obtained for the thermal ore sample was greater than the blasted sample by a factor of 2.44, a higher value indicating a decrease in the energy required to grind. The thermal fragmentation method generates product with higher dissolution of gold in cyanide, by 14% for the − 9.5 + 2 mm size fraction samples. Additionally, the thermal fragmentation results in higher production of − 9.5 + 2 mm material by 15 % compared with selective blasting.

"Under certain conditions of moisture and oxygen, sulphides can spontaneously heat, a phenomenon known as self-heating. In this paper, we test a hypothesis that galvanic interaction between some sulphides can promote self-heating. Galvanic interaction is controlled by restpotential difference between minerals and their surface area of contact (particle size). In order to decrease rest-potential, four sulphides were tested: pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Two series of samples consisting of mixtures of two sulphides, each representing a mass fraction of 50 %, were run in standard self-heating tests. The first series comprised five mixtures, two with low rest-potential difference (pyrite-chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite-sphalerite) and three with high rest-potential difference (pyrite-galena, chalcopyrite-galena and pyrite-sphalerite). The second series was performed on a pyrite-sphalerite mixture at four particle sizes (80 % passing 850 µm, 300 µm, 75 µm and 38 µm). The first series showed that the individual sulphides and the mixtures of low rest-potential difference did not self-heat but the mixtures of high rest-potential difference did self-heat. The second series showed that self-heating increased inversely with particle size (increased specific surface area) and revealed that it was the fineness of the pyrite (high rest-potential sulphide) that governed the self-heating effect, indicating the rate-limiting step is the reduction reaction on pyrite (cathodic mineral). The increase in self-heating with high rest-potential difference and increasing particle fineness supports the hypothesis that galvanic interaction contributes to sulphide self-heating. A possible mechanism based on the hydrogen sulphide hypothesis is proposed where the reduction reaction at the cathodic mineral surface is ferric to ferrous. The understanding gained will be of interest to those involved in storage, shipping and disposal of sulphide minerals.INTRODUCTIONSulphide mineral ores are the major source of most base metals such as copper, zinc, nickel and lead. Once the ore is extracted, the sulphide minerals are liberated by size reduction (crushing and grinding), concentrated by flotation, and the concentrates sent for further processing to extract the metal (smelting and refining). At the various stages from mining to concentrate shipment and tailings storage, the sulphides are exposed to a variety of environments, which under certain conditions of air (oxygen), humidity and temperature can cause them to heat. Since no external heat source is involved, this pyrophoric process is known as spontaneous heating or, more commonly, self-heating. The self-heating of sulphides is associated with oxidation reactions under moist conditions. If the heat generated is greater than the heat dissipated, the sulphides will self-heat and the material temperature will rise. This can make working conditions potentially dangerous as oxygen is consumed from the surrounding air and significant quantities of sulphur dioxide (SO2) can be released (Ninteman, 1978)."

Bentonite represents one of the main players in the stability of the drilling mud. Its particle size and particle size distribution affect the physical properties of the drilling mud especially the rheological properties. Therefore, a specific particle size distribution was recommended by American Petroleum Institute (API) for use in drilling mud. To clarify the effect of individual size and size distribution, in this study, the bentonite sample was classified into different size fractions. Each size fraction was tested separately in terms of controlling properties such as filtration loss, plastic viscosity, gel strength, cake thickness, and packing density. The effect of each size fraction on the rheological properties of the suspension was correlated to the behavior of the whole particle size distribution in the bentonite sample. The results indicate that the coarser the particles, the higher the rheological properties; in this case, the API mixture is the highest. The filtration loss and cake thickness for the API mixture are lower than that of the individual size fractions due to its wider size distribution due to the filling of voids between larger particles with smaller ones, which lead to bed compaction and consequently lower fluid loss and cake thickness.

The engineering profession generally does not accept vibro-driven piles as bearing piles unless their capacities can be verified by restriking with an impact hammer, which significantly reduces the economic benefits of vibratory driving. In part, the concern for capacity development in piles driven by vibration arises out of observations that vibro-driven piles do not develop capacities equivalent to those driven by impact (e. g., Mosher, 1987). Nonetheless, if capacities are predictable, vibratory installation may be more cost effective than installation by impact, due to savings in time of installation, even if capacities are lower than those of impact-driven piles. Throughout the past few decades, a number of attempts have been made to develop capacity prediction methods for vibro-driven piles, mostly along the same lines as methods for impact-driven piles. That is, (1) totally empirical formulae, (2) power balance / power transfer formulae, and (3) "time domain-nonlinear" (TDN) computational procedures such as the wave equation. Some of the formulae have been based partly on field experience, but the majority have been developed from simple theoretical models with parameters evaluated from laboratory studies. The influence of hydraulic fluids on spontaneous heating in bituminous coals is determined by measurement of the temperature increases produced in coal-fluid mixtures heated to a temperature sufficient for the initiation of self-heating. Similar tests on as-received coal samples and water-coal mixtures are compared with the results obtained for the various hydraulic fluids. Three of the four coals were sampled from coalbeds known to have a history of spontaneous heating. The data provide a basis for predicting the possible effects in gob or carbonaceous refuse of coal mines.

Background geochemistry of streams in mineralised terranes is affected by (a) natural sulphide oxidation and associated metallic discharges; and (b) previous mining history and associated discharges. Both of these processes elevate background metal concentrations by (i) directly adding dissolved metals to stream water; and (ii) adding sulphide-bearing sediments' to the stream system, to be trapped in old channels and bars for later chemical decomposition in situ or after flood reworking. Definition of downstream geochemical background, involving sediments and low-flow dissolved chemistry prior to mining is prudent, as this will provide a benchmark for any required estimation of new inputs from, for example, accidental tailings discharges. Two high-profile examples from western USA illustrate these points. Summitville mine in southern Colorado is an environmental disaster left when the operating company went bankrupt in 1991. Acid metal-rich discharges are leaving the site into a river system used for agricultural irrigation. However, nearby sub-catchments have substantial naturally occurring acid metal-rich discharges and locally discharge natural sulphide-rich debris flows into the same river. Distinction between natural and anthropogenic pollution in the downstream reaches is difficult. Early mining at Cooke City, Montana (New World District) released large volumes of sulphide-bearing tailings into the river system when a tailings impoundment dam failed. The event was equivalent to a 100-year flood, and tailings were deposited for 30 km downstream. These tailings are currently oxidising, and are being reworked into the modem stream during high flow events, thus perturbing background geochemistry.

Controlling noise has proven difficult in mining, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains common. In 2008, a South African Mine Health and Safety Council study focused on small- to medium-sized mines in relation to the milestones set by the industry to prevent NIHL. An evaluation of the compliance of ten diamond, sand, aggregate and Ready mix concrete mines and production sites with standards, legislation and best practice guidelines relating to NIHL prevention was conducted, using a noise compliance audit tool. The findings indicated that all mines surveyed had poor compliance with the international standards, compliance with International Standards Organization standards being the poorest. There was a clear distinction between the small and the medium-sized mines in their compliance with local standards and legislation (ranging from 14 per cent to 66 per cent). The areas of best compliance were audiology and medical examinations. The lower-than-expected compliance was largely attributable to shortcomings in hearing conservation programmes for occupational noise. Initiation of remedial practices in the small- to medium-scale mining sector to facilitate improvements in NIHL prevention and compliance with standards and legislation is recommended. "The Kidd Creek metallurgical site has been highly integrated to maximize revenues from its base metals mines. The site's operations include a Concentrator processing 4.3 million tonnes per year of copper-zinc ore, a Copper complex producing 100,000 tonnes per year copper cathode and a Zinc Plant producing 130,000 tonnes per year of zinc metal. To improve operating efficiency with increasing emphasis on productivity, process control, process automation and process optimization have been augmented and expanded during the last decade.New microprocessor based control systems provided the opportunity for the capturing of an expanded number of process related measurements. As supervisory computers were already in place, databases could be generated with only increased disc space and database management programs required. Once the data had been accumulated and stored, a method was then required for handling, screening and sorting large volumes of information in relatively quick and easy terms in order that the stored information could be used. By 1984, a decision to use personal computers for accounting, engineering and management reporting provided the vehicle necessary to handle this data. Using commercially available software, large volumes of stored process data can be downloaded from existing databases, filtered, sorted, analyzed, graphed, displayed, projected, reported and distributed. All this can be performed in very little time."

A surplus of vanadium has resulted from the tremendous output of uranium, of which vanadium is a byproduct. More knowledge of the properties and characteristics of vanadium as a pure metal has been needed so that industry can take advantage of its availability and use it according to the best principles of conservation. Besides the problem of utilization, there is the ever present need of finding new materials which will satisfy specific and demanding requirements of science and engineering; vanadium or one of its alloys may possess the latent potential for filling some of these needs. Thus this? research project was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine and examine some of the physical and mechanical properties of pure vanadium. A corallary investigation was the determination of the effect of the interstitial contaminants, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon, on unalloyed vanadium. The vanadium used for these determinations was principally the product of experimental production of the Bureau. The evaluation of this material, as small quantities became available, provided most of the data that have been obtained.

THE metallurgical industry has purchased more than sixty per cent of the industrial gas cleaning equipment installed in Canada. This includes cyclonic collectors, scrubbers, cloth filters and Cottrell Precipitators. These are the principal types of equipment which are used commercially for the cleaning of gases which result from the processing of iron, nickel, copper, lead, zinc, gold, gypsum and aluminum ores. The recovered dust, which usually contains metal values, is returned to the process. The cost of the equipment is thus economically justified. This is in contrast to other industries, such as those involving steam power generation, asbestos, cement and lime production, where, though dust collection equipment is extensively used, it is installed primarily for nuisance abatement. Communities are becoming more and more conscious of air pollution, new and more stringent legislation is being enacted, and, for other than economic reasons the smelting industry will eventually be required to install more efficient gas cleaning equipment.
