Tailings from the nickel refinery in Copper Cliff, Ontario, consist of fine silicates mixed with a variable amount of conductive and magnetic minerals mainly associated with sulphides and iron oxides. Subsequent oxidation of sulphide- rich phases within the tailings results in the formation of an acidic leachate that may contain significant concentrations of trace metals. Mapping the spatial distribution of regions of higher sulphide concentration therefore provides insight into the distribution of the acidgenerating potential within the tailings. Electrical conductivity is constrained by two parameters — the concentration of metallic sulphides and the ionic concentration of acid in groundwater. Magnetic susceptibility is directly related to the pyrrhotite and magnetite content. It is proposed that combining information derived from airborne electromagnetic and magnetic surveys can provide an indication of metallic sulphide distribution. Preliminary investigations of airborne electromagnetic and magnetic data acquired concurrently over the sulphide-rich Copper Cliff tailings site reveal that these parameters can provide information on mine tailing extent and permit separation of tailings with varying compositional and alteration levels. Airborne geophysical data provide information about the subsurface while a digital elevation model (DEM) and hyperspectral imagery record surface conditions. Integration of the two data sets can reduce ambiguity when interpreting mine tailing distributions and their subsequent alterations.

This paper describes a numerical method for calculating the three¬-dimensional stresses and displacements induced by tabular excavations in a rock mass consisting of parallel layers of distinct material properties. The method is based on the superposition of numerical solutions for elementary displacement discontinuities in a parallel layered rock mass. The method can be used to analyse complicated excavation layouts such as those encountered in room-and-pillar or longwall mining. The method can automatically take into account the effect of the earth's surface. The method offers an economic and efficient solution to stress analysis problems which cannot be adequately modelled using two¬-dimensional methods and for which the expense of three-dimensional finite element or general boundary element analysis cannot be justified.

Fires that occur in abandoned coal mines, waste banks, and in coal outcrops constitute a serious health, safety, and environmental hazard. Toxic fumes, the deterioration of air quality, and subsidence constitute the greatest hazards from these fires. Although tires on abandoned mined land (AML) occur in every coal-producing state, the severity of the problem varies. Methods to extinguish or control AML fires, including excavation, fire barriers, and sealing, are generally expensive and have a relatively low probability of success This U.S. Bureau of Mines report includes information from a variety of sources, i.e., agencies of the Federal Government, State agencies, research reports, conference proceedings, product information, and technical literature. This information has been collated into a comprehensive discussion of AML fire problems. Data on past fire control projects and on the estimated extent of the current problem have been compiled. Factors affecting the occurrence, propagation, and extinguishment of AML fires are discussed. Conventional fire control methods are described, and their probable effectiveness is evaluated. Information on the hazards of AML fires and safety considerations is included. The status of current technology, recent improvements in fire control methods, and areas of current research are discussed.

This summary of State laws or explosives was compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful In determining whether relevant statutes exist, and In locating them quickly,-with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of those jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a similar subject. To make these comparisons easier, the statutory provisions for each State have been grouped under several major topics in outline form. Although this sometimes has resulted in disruption of the continuity of individual acts, the increased general clarity and availability of comparable sections have more than justified the procedure followed.

Many massive sulfide deposits and districts around the World contain rocks that are variously referred to as ?exhalites?, banded iron formation (IF), ?Algoma-type? IF, ferruginous chert, jasper, jasperoid, cherty tuff, tuffite, tuffaceous exhalite, chloritic IF or sulfide IF. With few exceptions, such rocks are thought to be (in part) fossil hydrothermal sediments deposited from hydrothermal fluids vented into a submarine rift environment. Such hydrothermal sediments are associated with a wide variety of ancient base-metal sulfide deposits (e.g., Cyprus-, Besshi-, Kuroko-, and Broken-Hill-type deposits), and hydrothermal sediments are commonly associated with some of the largest base metal sulfide deposits in the world. Analogs of ancient hydrothermal sediments can be found around many modern seafloor hydrothermal deposits which themselves precipitate from high-temperature (350°-400°C) hydrothermal fluids. Hydrothermal fluids are quenched on contact with ambient seawater, and most of the metals are immediately precipitated to form the mound and chimney deposits. However, for kinetic and solubility reasons, not all metals and other species are immediately precipitated at the vent site. Fine particles (up to several hundred microns in diameter) of sulfides, sulfates, carbonates, oxides, silica, Fe-oxyhydroxides, clays, and other phases are precipitated from the hydrothermal fluids in the water column above the deposits. These particles or "particulates" are carried upward for several hundred meters in a buoyant hydrothermal plume (which is typically several hundred meters thick) until it reaches a neutral density, and disperses laterally from the vent site. Modelling of plume dynamics has shown that the majority of particulates are deposited by gravitational settling a few hundred meters from the vent site, and Å99% of particulates are deposited within 3 kilometers. However, signals from modern plumes have been detected even hundreds of kilometers from their source. Factors which can affect the morphology of the plume (and the resultant fallout pattern) include: particulate size, shape and density, bottom topography, and the direction and velocity of bottom currents.

Watershed Jll in Jefferson County, Ohio we instrumented in 1977 as one of three watersheds established for the purpose of investigating surface mining and reclamation effects upon local hydrology, sediment discharge, and sediment and water quality. Each watershed was less than 50-acres in size, and was in a different geologic setting within southeastern Ohio. Surface runoff and ground¬water levels were monitored. Samples were taken for sediment determination and chemical analysis prior to mining. Monitoring and sampling continued through the period of watershed disturbance caused by mining and reclamation activities, which began in May 1980 at Watershed Jll. A psuedo-postreclamation period followed the initial cessation of man-machine activity on the watershed. A second reclamation effort occurred in the fall of 1981 and was to be followed by a third in 1982 after observations ceased. A true final postreclamation period was not monitored at this site, because the erosion control practice (terrace diversions) failed after each reclamation. Watershed Jll was a small pasture and wooded watershed with sandstone and shale above the mined coal seam prior to mining. A clay layer under the coal supported a perched saturated zone, termed the top aquifer for convenience. A lower underclay supported a second saturated zone called the middle aquifer. A lower perched aquifer had been dewatered by previous deep mining. After about three years of premine data and about two and one-half years of mining reclamation and psuedo-postreclamation data, the following general observations may be made: 1. The mining-reclamation phase was very short, and the postmining period was characterized by erosion failures and remedial disturbances that kept the watershed condition and size in a state of change. It was impossible to collect sufficient data to confidently characterize the hydrologic-sediment-chemical aspects of the mining period or of a postreclamation period and, most importantly, of the future watershed after its various properties and characteristics have ceased adjusting to its severe disturbance and reconstitution. 2. A seeding of wheat followed by grasses and legumes was not a particularly successful reclamation practice in terms of stabilizing the new soil. Numerous rills and small gullies developed in spite of installed diversions. 3. Storm runoff rates and yields at the watershed outlet increased from the premine, (phase 1) to the mining-reclamation (Phase 2) periods, and remained at or near the Phase 2 level through the postreclamation (Phase 3a) period. 4. The top aquifer changed in physical and chemical character as a result of mining and was becoming reestablished as the project drew to a close; but it is impossible to predict its final configuration or character. 5. Dewatering of the top aquifer resulted in a complete cessation of baseflow because the middle aquifer water table lay below the elevation of the watershed outlet. 6. The top and middle aquifers were merged in one area of the watershed where the upper coal underclay was disturbed. 7. Failure of the diversion terraces and their outlet obscured the effects of the reclamation practice upon sediment concentration and yields. There was little difference in sediment concentrations between Phases 2 and 3a. 8. Drinking water standards were met by surface waters throughout the period of observation except for two samples that exceeded the nitrate-N allowable level of 10 mg/l. 9. In all Phase 3 surface-water samples, iron concentrations were within the limits established by OSM, and manganese concentrations exceeded the regulation level only once. pH fell below the lower regulation level of 6.0 between 10% and 20% of the time. 10. The chemical quality of sediments was generally about the same after reclamation as before mining, with the exception of organic carbon, which decreased.

"The benefits and advantages of pre-competitive, collaborative industry/university research are not always well appreciated. This paper presents the case study of a current collaborative project between CAMIRO-Metallurgical Processing Division and McGill University that is investigating the understanding and prevention of sphalerite activation in lead and copper-lead flotation circuits. The benefits of the research findings to the sponsors can be maximized by an approach which links the researchers themselves with the sponsors at frequent, interactive project review sessions. Some examples of the findings and their application to industry are also presented along with a general update on CAMIRO-MPD.INTRODUCTIONThe history of Canadian efforts in the area of collaborative pre-competitive research is not long when compared to Australia (AMIRA) and Britain (MIRO). AMIRA (Australian Mineral Industry Research Association) began over 40 years ago and has had a well recognized role in bringing together industrial sponsors and researchers to fund a large variety of very significant development projects in that country, The total AMIRA funding effort for mineral processing work currently exceeds some $Aus 40 million with new projects valued at about $Aus 12 million initiated each year. This high level of commitment by industry has contributed to establishing Australian researchers and their facilities as among the best in the world.Canadian companies have traditionally funded much of their R & D in-house with extensive facilities and large funding commitments. The past 2 decades have seen most of these facilities disappear. The current situation is one in which only the largest integrated metal and mining companies have retained their own R & D groups (e.g. INCO, Falconbridge, Noranda). Industry-funded research at universities was primarily through individual efforts by the mining companies and rarely included collaboration with other mining companies, equipment or chemical suppliers, or engineering firms."

This chapter presents an overview of fatal and nonfatal injuries reported to MSHA during 1986-1995. Reportable injuries follow the criteria for reporting specified in 30 CFR 50. These criteria are listed in appendix A. The data used for these analyses came from the MSHA accident, injury, and illness data closeout files for the years 1986-1995. The MSHA data are described in appendix A and methods used in data analysis in appendix B. There may be slight discrepancies between the figures presented here and other presentations of MSHA data for the following reasons: (1) injuries to nonemployees have been excluded from analysis; and (2) injuries identified by MSHA after the files were closed out are not included. Within the MSHA data, there are differences in reporting requirements for operators and contractors. Contractors are required to report only those injuries that occur during certain categories of work (described in appendix A). For this reason, data on injuries among employees of operators and contractors in the MSHA database should not be considered directly comparable. As discussed in the "Introduction," the MSHA data on fatal injuries differ from the CFOI data (chapter 1) because of varying definitions used for the mining industry. As compared to the CFOI data, MSHA data exclude injuries that occurred off of mine property and include injuries occurring at mills and processing plants on mine property. Tables 4-1 through 4-9 and figure 4-1 provide comparisons of injury frequencies and rates among the commodities. These comparisons are followed by sections 4A through 4E, which provide more detailed tables and figures for each commodity separately. The method used to calculate injury rates is described in appendix B. Since denominator data for occupations (lob titles) were available for 1986 only, estimates of rates by occupation for the entire 10 year period are based on extrapolation from 1986 data. For this reason, estimates of injury by occupation should be interpreted with caution. Fatal Injuries A total of 1,078 fatal on-the-job injuries were reported to MSHA during the 10-year period 1986- 1995. The average annual fatal injury rate for all commodities combined during this period was 30.9 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers. Mine operators accounted for 908 (84%) of the fatalities and had an average annual fatal injury rate of 28.2 per 100,000. While mine contractors comprised only 16% (n = 170) of the total number of fatalities, their average annual fatal injury rate was 2.3 times higher than that of mine operators (65.0 per 100,000). Table 4-1 presents the number and rates of fatal injuries by commodity for operators and contractors. Contractors in metal, nonmetal, stone, and sand and gravel are grouped together, since MSHA data on employment were not available for rate calculations for these commodities separately. The highest average annual fatality rate for the period, 66.5 per 100,000, occurred among metal and nonmetallic mineral mining contractors, followed closely by coal contractors (63.1 per 100,000). Among mine operators, the highest average annual fatal injury rate was in coal (38.9 per 100,000); the lowest was in nonmetal (14.3 per 100,000). Table 4-2 shows the average annual fatal injury rate by type of operation for each commodity for mine operators only. Of commodities with underground mines, all except stone had higher fatality rates at underground than at surface operations of these mines. The highest fatality rate for any operation occurred in surface operations at underground stone mines (124.5 fatal injuries per 100,000 workers). Stone had the second highest fatality rate for underground operations at underground mines (77.9 per 100,000). The highest rate for underground operations at underground mines occurred in metal (87.6 per 100,000). Table 4-3 shows the number and rate of fatal injuries by U.S. Bureau of the Census occupational groups (described in appendix D) for the 10 occupation-commodity groups with the highest fatal injury rates. These data should be interpreted with caution because the denominator used in calculating the rates was based on an extrapolation from data for the year 1986 only, as described in appendix B. Extractive occupations are represented in this group for three commodities: coal, metal, and sand and gravel. Construction trades are included for coal, sand and gravel, and nonmetal. The distribution of fatal injuries by commodity and work activity for mine operators is presented in table 4-4. A description of the work activity categories is in appendix C. Overall, the leading work activity at the time of injury was using or operating tools and machinery (26.4%) followed by constructing, repairing, and cleaning (24.0%), vehicular operations (18.8%), and materials handling (12.6%). The distribution varied by commodity. The largest percentage of fatal injuries occurred while operating tools and machinery in both coal and stone; during vehicular operations in metal; and during constructing, repairing, and cleaning activities in nonmetal and sand and gravel. Table 4-5 shows the distribution of fatal injuries by commodity and MSHA accident classification for mine operators. A description of the MSHA accident classifications appears in appendix E. Recent advances in solid-state, field portable, fast framing compact video camera systems and PC based frame capture hardware now allow blast imaging up to 1000 frames per second. Up to 4.1 seconds of data can be captured directly into the unit, downloaded to a PC or archived to a standard VCR without data compression. Since no film processing is involved, motion analysis can be performed instantly and on-site within a few minutes. This paper will describe the design features and applications of the MotionMeter system and compare these with the analogous aspects of film-based cameras and other systems. Of all blast monitoring systems and techniques available today, high-speed motion picture photography and videography still remain as the most valuable, stand alone, diagnostic techniques for troubleshooting and evaluating full scale blasts in the mining and explosives industries. High-speed image data, coupled with information obtained from other instrumentation systems, such as continuous velocity of detonation recorders, laser surveying systems, refraction and ground vibration recording seismographs, etc., can eliminate many assumptions about what actually took place in a blast. Thus, diagnostic confidence in evaluating both excellent and poorly designed blasts is increased, and optimum blast results, (which are application dependent), are achieved considerably faster when compared to the trial and error approach of relying on strictly the experience factor. Applications include developing site-specific blast designs, decay equations relating burden, burden velocity and explosive energy, determining ground response times, reducing coal damage, quantifying backbreak, evaluating the effectiveness of sternming, checking delay detonator firing times, evaluating air decks and for studying general dynamics. Motion analysis is performed with a 2D and 3D software package developed specifically for video analysis, but is also directly applicable to film analysis when using a digitizer. Dimensional controls, lens aberration, field set-ups and camera orientation are all automatically corrected for with matrix analysis.

"IntroductionThe copper-molybdenum property of Brenda Mines Ltd. is located 18 miles north west of Peachland in the Okanagan Valley of the Southern Central interior of British Columbia. The actual site is 50 miles north of the international boundary and 150 air miles east of Vancouver at an elevation of 5000 feet above sea level. The earliest written mention of the prospect is found in the Geological Survey of Canada, Memoir No. 243, issued in 1947 by Dr. H.M.A. Rice. In 1954 the area was staked by a prospector, Bob Bechtel, who interested Bern Brynelsen of Noranda Exploration in examining the claims. A joint Noranda - Kennecott program resulted but since the grades were so low the property was not taken up until in 1964 a re-examination by Chapman, Wood and Griswold produced recommendations leading to the construction of the Brenda Mine as it is today.The rounded, timber covered mountains of the area are composed of the tuffs, argillites and limestones of the Upper Triassic Nicola Group, which is intruded by a Jurassic quartz diorite, called the Brenda stock0 The actual orebody occurs in a strongly fractured zone within the Brenda stock, approximately 1500 feet from the contact with the Nicola group0 The ore minerals, .chalcopyrite and molybdenite, associated with pyrite and magnetite of lesser importance, occur as fillings within the fractures 0 The grade of the ore decreases outwards from a central higher grade core and in January 1971 total reserves were estimated at 165 million tons assaying 0,182% Copper and 0,049% Mo."

This case history describes the foundation design and construction for the New Mississippi River Bridge, presently under construction in St. Louis, Missouri. The 1,500 ft (457.2 m) main span of the cable-stayed bridge is supported by two delta tower pylons in the river, with anchor piers on each bank. The final foundation design was completed as a part of an Alternate Technical Concept (ATC) proposal by the winning construction team, and utilized drilled shafts up to 11.5-ft (3.5-m) diameter that were socketed into very hard limestone. As part of the ATC foundation design, a full-scale, bi-directional static load test was performed to verify the design and allow use of higher resistance values. This paper presents the results of the site exploration, construction of the load test shaft, details of the load testing, and a comparison of the test results with various design parameters.

Structures formed during ductile deformation have been reactivated during the later brittle mineralisation process. Two generations of folding are classified as: early recumbent megascopic FI folds and FI shears which transpose the hinge regions, and later upright F2 folds. S1 is folded about F2 folds which contain axial planar S2 crenulation cleavage. Vergence relationships between S1 and bedding indicate that many of the mineralised structures occupy sites of FI folds which have acted as plumbing systems for later gold mineralisation (eg Blackwater mine). The Globe-Progress gold mineralisation is localised by a major jog formed by sinistral strike-slip movement on two FI fault segments and mineralisation also occurs in smaller jogs along strike (eg Sir Francis Drake, Happy Valley-Merrijigs, Cumberland).   The lodes of ribbon quartz which exploit the FI shears and local bedding planes, are inferred to have mostly formed after the peak of metamorphism, possibly related to the emplacement of Carboniferous granites. This was followed by a sequence of vein deposition and wallrock alteration which consists of quartz-As/Fe sulphides ? carbonate - stibnite ¦ trace base metal sulphides and Bi-sulphosalts ? illitic clay/sericite-chlorite. Gold at Globe-Progress is mainly encapsulated in arsenopyrite. At Blackwater, free high fineness gold occurs in partings in lode quartz with late sericite-chlorite. The above sequence of events is comparable to that encountered in many intrusion-related gold systems throughout the Southwest Pacific region. There is a spatial relationship between gold mineralisation and dykes variably described as diabase, dolerite or lamprophyre. Alkaline rocks occur in many Pacific rim and older goldfields and may possibly be related to a magmatic source for gold mineralisation.

Over the period 2000 to 2003, roof falls have accounted for 4 to 14% of the fatalities in underground mining operations. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce the frequency, exposure, and risk of these events through an ongoing program of field and laboratory studies. One area of research involves the evaluation of polyurethane grouting technology that is commonly used to stabilize fractured mine roof strata. Concurrently, NIOSH is conducting work to evaluate the application of ground penetrating radar for advanced delineation of problematic mining areas. In this study, NIOSH partnered with Sub-Technical, Inc. who injected a polyurethane grout (also known as glue) into a roof area of NIOSH’s Safety Research Coal Mine. The mine roof area was scanned using ground penetrating radar technology before and after grout injection in an attempt to determine the extent of grout infiltration. A comparison of the pre-and post-grouting radar records showed a significant change at a mine roof depth of about four to five feet. The interpreted radar records were then compared with drill core information, borescope evaluation of roof-bolt holes in the study area, and underground observations. At this site, the interpretations of the radar records correlated with data obtained from the core holes, borescope evaluations and underground observations. This study showed that ground penetrating radar technology can be a useful tool for detecting changes in mine roof due to the injection of the grout.

Mine tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be a significant source of fine, respirable dust. This dust poses concerns, especially for nearby communities, because of its detrimental impact on respiratory health. To address these concerns, this study examined the effectiveness of commercially available polymers, known for their biocompatible and environmentally friendly features, to prevent dust generation from upstream-type TSFs in active mining operations. It focused on two areas in TSFs: the tailings beach and slope/dike surfaces. Two types of polymers—polyethylene glycol and poloxamer—were selected, and their effectiveness was evaluated in a series of phased laboratory and field tests. The lab tests investigated the moisture-retention capacity of the tailings after treatment with the polymer solutions as well as the ability of these solutions to reduce dust emissions. Polymers were applied to a tailings bed surface in the lab and dust was generated from this surface using a wind tunnel. PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations were measured using laser-diffraction dust sensors, and the polymers were found to have reduced dust emissions up to 95%. Small-scale wind-blowing tests were conducted in the field (specifically, in a controlled environment at a TSF) to evaluate polymer effectiveness on the tailings beach and slope/dike areas. The tests revealed that the AP could efficiently suppress approximately 80% of PM10 and PM2.5 dust emissions at both types of areas. Finally, 1000 gallons of AP solution were discharged at the top of tailings beach and slope/dike areas, respectively, and found to be effective. The results of these tests showed the high potential of the biocompatible polymers to be a feasible solution for reducing the respirable dust emissions from upstream TSFs in arid and semi-arid regions.

The tests revealed that the AP could efficiently suppress approximately 80% of PM10 and PM2.5 dust emissions at both types of areas. Finally, 1000 gallons of AP solution were discharged at the top of tailings beach and slope/dike areas, respectively, and found to be effective. The results of these tests showed the high potential of the biocompatible polymers to be a feasible solution for reducing the respirable dust emissions from upstream TSFs in arid and semi-arid regions.

NVI Mining’s Myra Falls operation is a forty-year-old underground mining operation feeding a 4,000 metric tonnes per day concentrator. The current mill, built in 1985, was designed to process a massive sulphide ore-body. This orebody, known as the HW, contains about 50% pyrite. Minerals of value are chalcopyrite and sphalerite, with precious metals occurring in all mineral types. By 1997, mining of a new ore-body, known as Battle-Gap, commenced. Mineralogically complex, the new orebody contains about 15% pyrite copper minerals, including primary chalcopyrite and secondary bornite, chalcocite and tennantite, combined with increased galena and sphalerite. Flotation performance generally decreased with increasing amounts of Battle-Gap ore types, with both copper concentrate quality (increased lead and zinc content) and copper recoveries being affected. Following significant metallurgical test-work, a new, fully sequential copper-lead-zinc flotation flow sheet and reagent scheme was developed. This sequential flow sheet was progressively installed and commissioned during 2006. Copper concentrate lead and zinc smelter penalty contents have been reduced by some 40%, while increasing copper recovery by 10%.

A study was conducted to investigate the damage potential to underground multiseam openings caused due to vibration generated by open-pit coal mine blasting. The objective was to recommend optimal explosives weight per delay to be detonated in open-pit blasts to ensure the safety and stability of underground openings. Sixteen blasts with varying charge weights and initiation sequences were conducted at Samleshawari open-pit mine and eighty four blast vibration data were recorded in the Hingir Rampur underground colliery in India. Analysis of vibration data showed that roof of the underground openings vibrated with much higher amplitudes compared to those in pillars and floors. The amplifications of vibration in the roof at the junction were upto 4.3 times the pillar vibration. It was observed that coal chips detached from roof when the peak particle velocity reached 131 mm/s or higher. The vibration magnitude recorded was higher in upper-seam openings than in belowseam openings. Rapid attenuation of vibration was recorded in below-seam openings at similar locations. Appropriate particle velocity-charge weight-distance equations were established to calculate the safe explosive weight per delay to be detonated in open-pit mine for the safety of multi-seams workings of underground mine. The support for the galleries and junctions were further modified for the working seams to ensure greater safety.
