CO2 emissions from carbonate laden reclaimed mine spoil has been shown to pose a hazard to residents in homes built on or adjacent to such land. The objective of this project was to develop a soil CO2 flux survey protocol for assessing reclaimed mine land. The research involved CO2 chamber accumulation flux surveys; stable carbon isotope ratio analysis; statistical hypothesis testing to examine correlation between CO2 flux and soil temperature and moisture as well as spatial dependence; and geostatistics to map CO2 and delineate high flux zones. Soil temperature was observed to have a positive correlation with fluxes while soil moisture was observed to be negatively correlated. Spatial dependence of CO2 fluxes on reclaimed mine land was observed on one of the two study sites. The research suggests that macro-porosity and gas permeability may be important factors that explain CO2 migration in mine spoil. A flux survey protocol has been developed, based on these results, for reclaimed mine lands. The work demonstrates the capability of geostatistical methods to delineate high flux fields. Further research will be required to determine suitable thresholds for such analysis.

In deep and highly-stressed coal mining, advanced design practices are used to minimize the potential for damaging events to occur. Despite these design efforts, the hazard of coal mine bumps can not be completely eliminated. This paper will review current and historic work practices used internationally to minimize the hazard to miners from mining in conditions which could produce a bump. These site specific work practices have a common base in monitoring for conditions which could result in a bump and application of controls to prevent the occurrence or minimize the severity of an event where miners are working. Monitoring practices range from purely observational to semi quantitative. Control methods attempt to initiate events in a controlled manner, absorb the energy of a potential event or reduce the potential for or magnitude of an event by altering the stress conditions of the mine workings. Building from the experiences of other coal fields, an empirical framework to manage the potential hazard of coal mine bumps can be developed to enhance the level of safety provided by prudent mine design.

The Greenland Group, Westland, can be characterised with respect to environmental issues by the application of a GIS database (DAME), and specific sampling campaigns. Waters draining gold mineralised areas have a distinctive chemistry characterised by neutral pH and arsenic as a trace element. The acid neutralising capacity (ANC) from carbonates usually exceeds the maximum potential acidity (MPA) from sulphides resulting in circum-neutral pH. These waters are readily distinguishable from waters draining coal mine related areas, which commonly have low pH (~4) and low As concentrations (~0.1 ppm). In contrast, dissolved arsenic mobilised from Greenland Group historic gold mining areas is up to 2.4 ppm. This As mobilisation is controlled by the secondary As mineral, scorodite (FeAsO2+2H2O). Maximum dissolved As concentrations increase with increasing pH, corresponding to the increasing solubility of scorodite with increasing pH. Dissolved As is attenuated by dilution, precipitation of scorodite, and/or adsorption to iron oxyhydroxide (HFO). Adsorption to HFO is an important attenuation mechanism in and adjacent to many mine sites. HFO is abundant at mine sites where pyrite was abundant in fresh rock, such as where the mineralised zone is dominated by disseminated pyrite. Pyrite, and resulting HFO, are relatively rare where mineralisation occurred as well-defined quartz veins. Localised HFO occurs also where ankerite oxidises in host rocks. Arsenic output flux (ca. 25 g/day) from historic gold mine sites is commonly less than the natural background flux from mineralised rocks (>5000 g/day).

This study is a continuation of previous work in which the responses of tall structures to close-in construction blasting at two rock excavation sites are evaluated. A total of eight buildings were instrumented to calculate blast-induced wall strains. Of these structures, five high-rise buildings measuring 166 ft (51 m) to 294 ft (90 m) in height (15 to 24 stories), were included for this study and compared with the results of previous studies that included one to three story residential structures and mid-rise structures (four to six stories). All five structures were built between 1908 and 1940 with interior walls comprising aged plaster. Three of the structures are designated Landmark, subject to a 0.5 in/s (12.7 mm/s) regulated peak particle velocity (PPV) limit. The regulated PPV limit for the two other structures was 2.0 in/s (50.8 mm/s). To date, a total of 450 close-in construction blasts have taken place over six months at the two adjacent projects, blasting three to six times per day at each site. Seismograph instrumentation included tri-axial geophones in the ground and bi-axial geophones (horizontal components only) mounted on structure exteriors at the corners closest to blasting. Peak global wall tensile strains were calculated from time-correlated differential structure displacements in two horizontal directions as measured by upper and lower geophones mounted near the roof and at street levels. Wall strains were correlated with ground excitations to establish a stiffness factor for each structure defined as the upper bound linear regression slope for strain as a function of ground displacement. In addition, a structure-specific regression best-fit function was established to relate horizontal components of displacement to velocity. These two functions were used to determine the maximum ground motion velocity for a desired limit placed on wall strain. A 25 ?-strain limit was suggested for both projects to protect interior plaster walls. To date, global wall strains have not exceeded 0.53 ?-strains (or 47 times the project limit) for peak particle velocities up to 3.49 in/s (88.6 mm/s). This demonstrates the low strain response of tall structures to ground velocities well above regulated limits. The stiffness factor computed for the most flexible high-rise building was 688 in-1 (17475 mm-1). In comparison, stiffness factors for the most flexible residential and mid-rise structures previously studied were 8651 in-1 (219735 mm-1) and 4387 in-1 (111430 mm-1), respectively. Based on a large number of measurements made at these study structures, the maximum horizontal ground velocity needed to achieve 25 ?-strains in walls ranged from 36 in/s (914 mm/s) to 192 in/s (4877 mm/s) because of the high stiffness of these buildings. Such high amplitudes of ground vibrations can never be safely achieved during close-in blasting in urban environments. These excessive values stand to show how unfounded the current limits of 0.5 in/s (12.7 mm/s) and 2.0 in/s (50.8 mm/s) are when applied to massive, tall structures. This study demonstrated that upper structure motions are highly attenuated from the lower (street-level) motions because of the long travel distances up the buildings. High-rise structures are far stiffer than mid-rise and residential structures and can withstand ground vibration amplitudes far greater than the currently enforced blasting limits in New York City.

This report describes a process for quickly developing information that is useful for skills training. The process is called job training analysis (JTA). Its main use is to structure skills training at the jobsite. JTA supports structured skills training by identifying the job duties, tasks, and steps and the reasons why those job components are important. The outcome of the JTA process is a worksheet—a training outline based on the knowledge and expertise of experienced workers. Time invested in developing a JTA will result in significantly more time saved when it is used appropriately by skilled trainers. Like a roadmap, JTA saves time and energy. Experimental work at several mine sites helped document, refine, and validate the JTA process. JTAs for two mining jobs—roof bolting and lift truck operation—at two different mine sites are used to illustrate some of the concepts and the specific JTA process described in this report. The work at these two sites was influenced by cooperative work between the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at several other mine sites and prior collaborative work with the U.S. Navy. The mining JTA process is grounded within the military research on the design of instructional systems. MSHA and NIOSH worked to simplify and apply the military training development model for mining industry use through collaborative work at several mine sites. The JTA process involves three activities: (1) planning, (2) a 1- to 3-day workshop where the JTA is developed using facilitated work with subject-matter experts, and (3) followup. Guidelines and considerations for each of these activities are included. Results indicate that the JTA process has been well received and valued by mining industry participants. It blends aspects of health and safety, production, maintenance, and crew coordination.

Mine Terex articulated dump trucks are working on a large restoration project of an abandoned open cast coal site in Blacklaw, central Scotland. The project is part of the construction of a 42-turbine wind farm complex. During the scheduled 18-month duration of the project, three 28-t(31-st) Generation 7 TA30 dump trucks and the six 36.5-t (40-st) TA40articulated trucks are estimated to move about 1Mm3 (1.3 million cu yd)of material. The trucks are working12-hour shifts, 5.5days a week.

It is currently recognized by mining society that autonomously guided underground mining vehicles may greatly increase the efficiency of mining production and improve human safety. Recent results in mobile robotics, data fusion and sensor development provide a solid basis for solving the problems related to autonomous underground navigation. Recently developed commercial systems mostly rely on the infrastructure that is expensive and difficult to maintain. Guideless navigation in unstructured and harsh environment of underground mines is still a challenging task. In this paper, we describe an autonomous navigation system for an underground mining vehicle equipped with on-board dead reckoning, inertial and optical sensors. This system does not require any artificial infrastructure and is capable to guide the vehicle along the complex environment of interconnected underground drifts; it also ensures the detection of obstacles on the vehicle path. The user interface for monitoring and control is described and the results of laboratory tests and on-site experiments are presented. Work in progress addresses the system integration for real equipment, and the system upgrade, adding map-building and selflocalization capabilities .

A composite iron ore-reductant pellet is a mixture of fine iron ore and fines of coal/char/coke, bonded at essentially room temperature with sufficient green strength for subsequent handling. In ironmaking, these pellets offer the advantage of fast reduction, utilisation of fines, non-coking coal and coke breeze. The composite pellet-based alternative ironmaking processes constitute a promising route for ironmaking in future. The present paper is a brief review of kinetics and mechanism of reduction of iron oxides into iron and other associated reactions, when these pellets are heated to high temperature. It would draw significantly from investigations conducted by the author and his co-workers.

After the Loma Prieta Earthquake, which caused major damage to viaducts in the Bay Area, the California Department of Transportation set up a test programme for foundation piles. Funderingstechnieken Verstraeten B.V., beter known as Fundex, was approached, since one of the piling systems of Fundex, named Tubex, is extremely suitable in areas sensitive to earthquakes and we were very much interested to prove the capabilities of this piling system. Equipment For the installation of Tubex and Tubex grout-injection piles special piling equipment is required. Since our company is not only a contractor, but also a designer and manufacturer of piling equipment, all special equipment for our range of foundation techniques is designed and built by our own piling equipment department. "Multi-stage crushing plants, including high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) circuits, require more materials handling equipment than SAG and ball mill circuits. A temptation exists to neglect the energy consumption of materials handling when doing desktop comparisons of HPGR versus SAG milling circuits because estimation of materials handling power requirements can demand significant general arrangement drafting that is not available when performing preliminary scoping or ""desktop"" studies.The largest component of materials handling power is consumed by conveyors when lifting material between stages of crushing, meaning that a simple potential energy model can be used to evaluate conveying specific power consumption. This potential energy consumption for conveying can then be factored to provide overall materials handling specific energy consumption suitable for desktop studies of HPGR and other multi-stage crushing circuits. The technique also permits different crushing circuit flowsheets to be evaluated, at a preliminary level, by simply counting the number of times a conveyor must ""lift"" ore from ground level up to a bin or other equipment mounted up high.INTRODUCTIONTrade-off studies of multi-stage crushing plants involving high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) versus semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuits typically focus on the operating cost savings of crushing plants versus the capital cost savings of SAG mill plants. Very high-level (or desktop) studies of this type do not include a great deal of engineering work, meaning that the details (and costs) of ancillary systems are often not captured when doing the comparisons. The more complicated nature of the multistage crushing plants means there are more ancillary systems than a SAG mill plant, risking a skewed analysis of the operating costs, benefiting the HPGR option.One of the ancillary systems that may be overlooked is the more complicated conveying systems inherent in multi-stage crushing plants. Due to the mass of material being handled in large mining operations, these conveyors become a significant portion of the operating costs. A simple way to estimate the specific energy consumption of conveying systems without requiring engineering drawings and a site layout would allow high-level studies to capture this operating cost."

Some years ago, a method was developed to incorporate a grout column around square-shaft helical screw-piles and anchors to increase shaft buckling resistance under compression loading. An additional benefit of this grouted shaft is to increase the load capacity in both compression and tension, depending on the geometry of the lead helical section and the soil conditions. Because of the unique construction procedure, the contribution of the shaft to the total capacity has largely been unknown. The behavior of grouted shaft helical anchors in clay was investigated by performing full-scale axial uplift (tension) load tests on a series of anchors installed at the University of Massachusetts Geotechnical Test Site. In order to isolate the contribution of the grouted shaft to the total load capacity, anchors were installed with a wooden dowel connection between the lead helical section and extension sections on three of the four anchors so that only the shaft resistance would be measured during the load tests. The grouted shafts ranged in length from 10 to 30 ft (3 to 9 m). Initial tests were performed approximately 5½ months after installation. Nearly four years after the initial tests were performed, the tests were repeated to evaluate any significant change in capacity with time and/or repeat testing (preshearing). The soil conditions at the site are presented along with the load-displacement curves for both the initial and repeat teats and a discussion of the analysis of the results. Repeat load tests showed an increase in capacity from the initial testing, however the percent increase was not the same for all depths. The results demonstrate that considerable shaft resistance can be developed in clays from the grouted shafts as might be expected. Depending on the L/D ratio of the shaft and the contribution of the lead helical section, at working loads the shaft capacity can dominate the behavior.

The Slippery Rock Watershed Coalition was organized to restore a 70 km2 portion of the headwaters of the Slippery Rock Watershed in northwest Pennsylvania. Thirteen passive treatment systems have been installed with engineering and funding provided by private industries, county government and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In addition, experimental systems have been installed at the Jennings Environmental Education Center which, in addition to monitoring the systems installed within the watershed, provide an array of educational and research opportunities for secondary, college and university students. The coalition sponsors an annual seminar for students to present the results of their research and field trips for public officials and private citizens to learn how public and private partnerships work together to restore the Slippery Rock Creek watershed.

Soil Nail walls, like any other structure, must meet high standards of design to be acceptable to the public and owners. On the other hand, the concept of soil nailing trails behind other structures in terms of defined design criteria that are commonly acknowledged. This is not to say that soil nail walls need to be less safe or less conservative than alternative more conventional concepts. Instead, the lack of established design criteria and design methodology entails that rules of thumb from past experience, overly simplified calculation assumptions, and the engineers' common sense judgement must substitute for a complex analysis of true stability and wall performance. Those "design approaches" must be conservative to ensure an adequate structure. Also, soil nailing may not be perceived prudent where site conditions are considered beyond past experience. For instance, site conditions may be perceived out-side the scope of soil nailing applicability where walls are very high, soil parameters variable or low, or nearby buildings close to the wall edge. These investigations were conducted to determine conditions for recovery of nickel and copper from Funter Bay, Alaska, sulfide ore and recovery of nickel from nickel-silicate ore, Nickel Mountain, Riddle, Oreg. Samples of Funter Bay cupriferous and nickeliferous pyrrhotite ore, were treated by beneficiation, roasting, electric smelting of roasted are for matte production, chlorination, leaching, and sulfatizing roasting with subsequent leaching. Funter Bay and Nickel Mountain ores were smelted together to produce matte. Total sulfide flotation, followed by magnetic separation of the tailings to recover entrained nickel-bearing pyrrhotite, resulted in the highest nickel recovery in beneficiation tests on Funter Bay are. Overall beneficiation resulted in recovery of 98.5 percent of the copper and 95.4 percent of the nickel in the concentrate that contained 3.5 percent copper and 1.7 percent nickel.

The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County involves TBM mining a pair of subway tunnels through soil and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow city street. Along the tunnel alignment are a historic building on shallow foundations and modern buildings on deep foundations, one constructed directly over the alignment during the latter phases of design. This paper provides an overview of the general site conditions, and technical basis for excavation support and tunneling decisions. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans, geotechnical baseline report development, and risk management will also be discussed.

Introduction The Open Cut is one of the best known landmarks in South Dakota's Black Hills. It is the site of the original discovery of the Homestake ledge, or lead, in 1876. Between that time and 1945, the Open Cut produced about 36 Mt (40 million st) of gold ore, the majority of which was drawn from underground operations. In 1981, a drilling program was undertaken to determine how much ore the old timers left behind. The results of this study indicated an ore body made up of broken and caved ground, and solid blocks in pillars and crowns. Reserves are estimated at about 6.8 Mt (7.5 million st) of gold ore, grading at 4 g/t (0.116 oz per st). Total tonnage of material, including waste, is estimated at more than 60 Mt (66 million st). The mining plan is a combination open pit and underground operations. The bottom 78 m (255 ft) will be mined by the underground panel-caving method. The open pit was designed as a contractor operation up to the expected milling stage or the point of sustained ore production. The pit was designed to avoid disturbance of US Highway 85 near Lead, SD. In 1983, the South Dakota Board of Minerals and Environment approved the mining and reclamation plan. Test mining began in the north of the Open Cut using open pit methods. Upon completion of the test pit, Homestake Mining's board of directors approved an expanded mine plan. They committed an additional $27.1 million to prestrip the ore body that is expected to yield 23 t (750,000 oz) of gold. Project life is estimated at 15 years. Exploration program In early 1980, 10 diamond drill holes were drilled from the surface in the vicinity of the east side of the Open Cut. The reserves delineated by that drilling were too small to justify their development. A continuation of this study attempted to quantify the tonnage remaining in the bottom of the Open Cut in the crushed remnants of old stope-and-crown pillars. This was originally thought to be minable by improved drawhole methods using highly mechanized procedures. By early 1981, however, thinking turned toward surface mining methods. The effort to quantify minable ore tonnage ultimately involved drilling 385 reverse-circulation rotary drill holes. These were drilled from August 1981 to March 1983 in several groups of holes. Each group, or drilling program, had a slightly different immediate goal or purpose. The holes were drilled to various depths using truck-mounted Drill Tech 40 drills with doublewalled 76 mm (3 in.) pipe with 134 mm (5.25 in.) three-cone rotary bits. Initially, wet drilling was employed using a cyclone collection system. Since cutting recovery was not as high as it should have been, all subsequent drilling was dry. The cuttings were collected and deposited by way of a cyclone into the sample bag. The pickup for the cuttings using the three-cone bits was about 50 mm (2 in.) above the bottom of the hole. Overall cutting recovery for the drilling program was estimated at 75%. Samples were taken on each 1.5 m (5 ft) of hole drilled. Each sample was split into three 48-g (1-2/3 assay ton) charges. The accepted value was the straight average of the three charges. Because of the known "nugget effect," assays were nearly impossible to duplicate. Therefore, to validate the regular assays, a series of screen fire assays were run. Based on this method of assays and checks, it was concluded that 10% more ounces would be produced than indicated by mine grade. Test pit The northernmost portion of the mine as planned is known as the Terraville test pit. This portion was mined ahead of the rest and separately. It provided answers to questions on slope stability, reserves correlation, mill recoveries, mining costs, and surface mining conditions in various weather and ground conditions since many boulders and much timber were expected. The mining plan for this portion of the pit was successful. More ore was mined than was expected. Mixing of Open Cut ore with underground ore in the mill feed was successful. "1.0 SYNOPSISThe Colomac property, located 137 miles by air northwest of Yellowknife in Canada's NWT. will recover gold from 10,000 tons per day of open pit ore.The decision to proceed with the project was based on a mineable ore reserve of 16 million tons (including dilution) averaging 0.064 oz/ton. After an in-fill drilling program in the latter half of 1988, Colomac's mineable, proven and probable ore reserves were increased to 28 million tons averaging 0.056 oz/ton of gold.A feasibility study completed by Wright Engineers for Neptune Resources in December 1987 examined the possibility of vat leaching followed by C.l.P. and electrowinning. A second feasibility study completed by Wright in February 1988 demonstrated that a conventional agitated leach circuit using a finer grind justified the higher capital cost of this process. This study was accepted and formed the basis of the project authorization.Preliminary engineering commenced in April 1988 and detailed engineering was started in September of that year with the objective of a mine/mill start-up by early 1990.The short time period available to meet the project deadline was additionally challenging, as site access is either by plane year round, and winter road from early February to late March. Normal lead times for equipment design, specifications, quotations and bid analyses were not possible, if the winter road time-slot was to be met."

"The On-Stream Analyzer has proven and is still proving to be an extremely valuable tool for the control of flotation circuits. This paper examines the possibility of going further in the utilization of the provided assays using a real-time material balance program to calculate the distribution of solids within the streams of a circuit. Mass balance results can be used for process control, process analysis and detection of sensors malfunction. Examples from 3 Canadian and one American concentrators are presented to illustrate the potential of the method.IntroductionThe On-Stream Analyzer (OSA) has gained, over the last two decades, the status of key instrument for the control of flotation plants. The OSA is currently used in almost every sulphide flotation plant and its application in oxide mineral flotation plants is increasing. On-Stream Analyzers provide X-rays pulse counts that are converted into assays using multilinear regression programs. The estimated assays are passed to the flotation operators, via an operator console, or to control loops of various degrees of complexity (McKee, 1991) implemented in a Distributed Control System (DCS). Operators and/or controllers take control actions based on these assays to ensure an adequate operation of the plant. Although this application pays off very rapidly for the purchase of the OSA, one should ask: Could we get more from the OSA?Some plants reported the use of OSA measurements to process optimization (McKee, 1991). The optimization strategy is based upon economic indices calculated from metal recovery using the 2 product formulae (Wills, 1992, page 124). The 2 product formulae is however sensitive to measurement errors in the assays and can lead to considerable scatter in the calculated indices (Hodouin et al., 1993). Least squares algorithms provide an interesting alternative to filter out measurement errors (Spring, 1992). This paper presents a recursive least squares algorithm that estimates in a real time fashion the mass flow rates in a flotation plant using OSA and mass flow measurements. The algorithm is robust and its recursive structure is not demanding in terms of computation time and memory. The method was tested with data from four concentrators. Results of the material balance algorithm prove to be useful to detect sensors malfunction and may potentially be used for the control and optimization of flotation plants.The paper is divided into two sections. The first section gives a description of the proposed method. The mathematics of the method are kept to a minimum, since the detail is presented elsewhere (Bazin and Franklin, 1994). The second section shows the application of the method to different flotation plants."
