This paper presents a study conducted to assess sillmat behaviour during undercut mining and to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects of arching and sillmat thickness on stability. The design study investigated the effects of such parameters as stope width and height, closure strains, orebody geometry and inclination, wall roughness, fill properties and cure time on the stability of cemented sillmat during undercut mining. Arching effects have been quantified based on centrifuge modeling studies for the different mining conditions. Observations have indicated that the degree of arching is a function of stope geometry, wall roughness, fill cohesion, and wall closure. Arching effects increased with decreasing stope width, increasing backfill cohesion and frictional resistance, increasing wall roughness and with wall closure.

In considering the architectural design of the group of buildings which make the surface workings of a mine, the variety of function of the buildings is the most outstanding feature. It falls to the architect to unify the group in a manner which still expresses the function of the individual buildings. In achieving this, many perspective studies were made at an early stage and as the area was developed, a scale model was produced initially for design study purposes and later completed as a model of the final development.

"During the design of a typical modern subway, engineering aspects prevail since underground structures remain hidden to most humans. Aligning the advanced architectural concepts with the engineering requirements of the Naples Metro Line 1 (Italy) called for a thorough rethinking of the design process so that the engineering could be kept aligned with the architecture, integrating seamlessly the two with the construction methods, standards and technology.The preliminary design process consisted of three major phases: •,geotechnical and geological issues, preselection of construction methods; •,functional scenario based on engineering and construction requirements; •,review and merging of the architectural concept with the functional and engineering aspects. The last phase proved the most demanding one, matching the first outline sketches with the applicable construction methods. This required continuous alignment of approaches, eventually leading to the design consistent with the original architectural vision, yet fully compliant with the engineering and construction framework. At the beginning general information on Line 1 will be provided, followed by some main features of the construction work along the Dante – Garibaldi section both for the tunnel and the stations. At the end, the selected methodology and the related consequences on the functional, technical and architectural design will be outlined.City of Naples current municipal transportation plan envisages a circle ring line for the metro line M1. Actually it’s open to public the segment Piscinola – Dante – Garibaldi run by AMM, municipal company. This ring segment has been built by Metropolitana di Napoli, while Napoli Metro Engineering (company belonging to MMspa Group) is in charge for the planning of entire system and construction management. Line 1 connects Piscinola-Secondigliano northern periphery to Vomero shopping neighborhood, downtown and Central Railway Station."

"The Anomaly A area of the Clarence Stream gold deposits in southwestern New Brunswick contains mineralized structures that bear geometrical relationships to regional folding events. The four mineralized zones of Anomaly A (AD, MW, 93, and Murphy) are hosted by turbiditic graywacke, quartzose wacke, siltstone, and argillite sequences of the Kendall Mountain Formation. A regional scale structural analysis reflects at least four deformational events, three of which appear to control the folded geometry of Anomaly A (D2, D3, and D4). F2 and F3 folds are coaxial and are refolded into a dome and basin geometry by F4 folds. The mineralized zones are subparallel to axial surfaces of F2 folds. Structural analysis of a mineralized zone exposed at surface indicates that gold mineralization is hosted by a quartz-vein system that comprises veins generated during both D2 and D3. Threedimensional representations of Anomaly A created using drill-core data and ®GoCAD suggest that the quartz-vein system was emplaced in fault structures during D2 as well as within brecciated dilation zones during D3. Three of the four zones that make up Anomaly A have F2 hinge surfaces that can be linked through a geometry compatible with the style of F3 and F4 folds. The apparent continuity of these three zones indicates the potential for kilometer-scale mineralized structures at Anomaly A. Prospecting in its modern context means simply the gathering of information on which, to base plans for the utilization of our mineral resources. One prospecting system familiar to T. V. viewers is the pan of the old gold prospector which, while he prospected, could produce the wealth which financed him in his search. Present day geophysical "prospecting" systems, which are based on the real or supposed responses of an ore specimen, to various stimuli finder controlled laboratory conditions, are promoted as means of reducing the cost of prospecting. The universal drawback to all geophysical systems is that they yield "soft" data which are only presumed to be analogous to ore mineralization until they can be calibrated, by conventional prospecting systems, to each actual mineral environment being tested. By this time the system usually is no longer cheap. Since the raw data are too esoteric to be used until interpreted by geophysicists, usually in the light of their own personal theories and experience, the certainty of multiple interpretation is introduced. The concept of prospecting, at St. Joe Minerals Corporation's Viburnum, Fletcher and Brushy Creek mines in the new Missouri Lead Belt, encompasses surface diamond drilling for preliminary exploration, the sub¬sequent development of ore body tonnages and grades and the establishment of mining parameters. The predominantly flat-lying mineralized formation is mined by room and pillar stoping. In an operating mine, jackhammer holer are drilled in backs and bottoms of stopes, and chip samples are taken for assay, concurrent with mining. Thus irregularities in ore bodies or nearby discontinuities are not overlooked which are above or below the general mine

ArcHodrilling (Arcuate Hole Drilling) of short radius overhead curved holes from within the working level with a new, small-diameter in-the-hole drill produces tangible, assayable chip samples from the entire height of the projected mine level where the hole arcs down immediately in front of the working face. Drilling through the projected level with diamond coring tools produces samples showing the competence of roof and floor strata as well as the geological and economic characteristics of the ore. Hand-portable solid state electronic surveying instrument has been developed to survey the ArcHole and a convenient nomograph plotting record sheet converts survey digital readouts to hole inclination in degrees, to radius of curvature in feet, and to attitude of the plane of curvature from vertical in degrees, all without calculation. The ArcHodrilling system offers a tool with which the exploration geologist can more nearly assess the true potential of old mining properties being reexamined and to reduce the number of surface diamond drill holes needed to secure development data about new ore bodies. It gives the mine geologist an opportunity to secure those data at a fraction of the cost of drilling from the surface. The mining supervisor has a convenient, cheap tool to look ahead to know what he will be mining tomorrow. The mill supervisor has an opportunity to reduce his mineral loss in tailings by being able to anticipate the grade of his mill feed.

"In 2005, an inspection showed that the Deception Bay Wharf in the Canadian Arctic was at the end of its service life. Although Deception Bay is closed with landfast ice up to 5 ft thick, shipping operations continue year-round, with additional voyages in the summer open-water season to supplement mine supplies. The rehabilitation scheme that allowed minimal interruptions to shipping involved concrete caissons cast on barges and an ingenious placing system.WorleyParsons Westmar of Vancouver, B.C., performed the inspection under contract to the owner, Xstrata Nickel, Montreal, Quebec. The wharf, on the coast of the Nunavik region of Quebec, was originally constructed in 1971 for an asbestos mine, and is now used to support Xstrata’s Raglan nickel mine, importing fuel for p o w e r g e n e r a t i o n a n d general mine supplies, and exporting nickel concentrate to smelters in the south. Emergency repairs were essential to allow operations to continue at the site, while the parties considered permanent rehabilitation options and secured funding. The repairs were done in the openwater seasons, and included reinforcing the failed interlocks above water level with steel patch plates and injection grouting of the cell fill below the port crane in 2005. In 2006, workers installed a circumferential belting system below water level.Westmar held critical planning sessions with the mine operation personnel to find ways to stretch the limits of the mine supplies and nickel storage facilities. In the end, the parties agreed to shut down construction activities four times during the ice-free season to allow access to the dock site.Westmar developed a plan that allowed mine operations to continue during construction, and Xstrata approved the plan and budget in September 2006, for execution in 2007. Rapid construction was essential. To accommodate the short construction season and maintain minimum levels of service for the mine, the work was radically different from conventional Arctic deep-sea port construction. Like the original Deception Bay Wharf, construction practice was to use steel sheet pile circular cells with the consequential heavy support services for the labour force. Construction duration was typically two seasons. The plan for Deception Bay was executable in one season based on a concrete caisson structure. Only a modest amount of schedule float was needed."

FUNDAMENTALLY a dredge designed for operating under arctic conditions and particularly when the temperature is below freezing is not greatly different than one for use in more moderate climates. Because of the accumulation of ice it is necessary to design suspension units to carry an increased weight when ice forms on the digging ladder or stacker. Winch room and house must be made with double walls and insulated. The dredge must be heated either by steam or by circulating warm air electrically heated. The stacker must be covered and heated to avoid having the drive units frozen tight. Actually the worst trouble that might develop in a stacker, because of cold weather, is the freezing of spilled material and ice accumulation on the head pulley and the underside of the belt. For this reason, stackers are completely enclosed and the pan kept open to get rid of any spilled material and to prevent overloading. Since the stacker is the most vulnerable place on a dredge in cold weather, heat is turned on there long before it is necessary any other place on the dredge. The principal points of interest in' connection with dredging, under subfreezing conditions, concern the preparation of the ground being dredged and the frozen ponds. In the interior of Alaska, and also in the Yukon territory of Canada, most of the gold bearing gravel deposits are permanently frozen and they are also covered by variable thicknesses of fine grained sediment, locally called muck. The better pay areas in this frozen ground have generally been worked by the earlier miners who sank shafts to bedrock in the frozen ground, then drifted in four directions and dug out the areas between the drifts as they re- treated toward the shaft. They thawed only the area they were excavating, doing so with steam from wood-fired boilers, and hoisted pay gravel to the surface for subsequent washing.

"In response to “Arctic Mineral Wealth —Equitable Participation with Aboriginal Landowners – A slow or fast process?”, this author’s impression is one that, to her, seems obvious — this is definitely going to be a slow process. To question this issue seems ridiculous, unless the mining industry is considering following the same patters of the past, thereby adding to the suppression and injustices to which the aboriginals are so accustomed. To make genuine progress, where trust and good communication has been achieved with time as a factor in proceeding, the author feels, without a doubt, that the triangle of industry, government and aboriginals will seriously have to be restructured or eliminated. Anytime you mix government with progress, along with other problems, you are looking at bureaucracy, and that takes time. Issues such as the settlement of land claims have not been resolved, and in all likelihood could take forty years to finalize. Aboriginals have been suppressed for centuries by governments and industries with ethnocentric ideologies, and now that they are in a position to reclaim their lands, attain their own economies and government, and truly secure a wealthy, self-sufficient legacy for their descendants, how can anyone imagine they’ll move quickly? This author also strongly disagrees to some sections of Mr. Wakefeld’s article and will expand on her objections.We question whether aboriginals under-stand the process of mine development. If we encounter an electrical problem in our home, o we not call an electrician without having to learn the trade ourselves? This comparison seems simplistic, but does convey a point. As cited, “there are now over 100 000 aboriginals who have completed post-secondary education.” Are the numbers revealed in Mr. Wakefeld’s paper there to scare us? Is he suggesting that without the industry’s haste, the aboriginal’s new found intelligence could pose a problem to the mineral explorer. While it is true that not all are highly educated, the aboriginals have specialists in market fluctuations, feasibility studies and the needed skills. They have specialists, such as their representative organization of COPE 1984, (the Committee for Original People’s Entitlement), who under-stand their cultures, language and desires. Their education should expedite the negotiations and end the power struggles equitably. Aboriginal people are not stupid. Once they have reason to be proud, regain their communities and know the direction that they’re headed, their self-determination will return."

"The pace at which mining will occur in Northern regions and Arctic lands will depend on the answers to a number of questions. Who are the local aboriginal participants? What land uses are they pursuing? What are their objectives? What is their understanding of the process of mining development? This paper will focus on the last question, communicating the process of mineral development to local aboriginal communities.IntroductionIn the environmental impact hearings for the BHP-DiaMet diamond mine, the smaller Dene Treaty 8 Nation argued for the settlement of its Land Claims as a pre-condition to development. However, the larger Dene Treaty 11 Nation were prepared to permit the mine to proceed on the basis that their people would receive benefits during the construction and operation of the mine.Wherever mining is the significant basis for tax revenues and economic development expectations may be encouraged beyond the realities of the situation. Izok Lake has been known for several decades as a significant mineral deposit but because of its size and the transportation costs involved, it is now a “frozen” ore body. The extent of its mineralization at current metal prices will not support the mining and processing costs without substantial government support for infrastructure and roads. At the opposite side of Canada, Voisey’s Bay clearly satisfies all technical criteria but, nonetheless, two Inuit groups, the Innu, and Métis, have all made LandClaims relating to the mine area.Contrasting the mineral deposits at Voisey’s Bay and Izok Lake emphasizes that the timing of production is dependent on factors such as the grade and amount of reserves, their market price, location and availability of government support. Nonetheless, it is this author’s thesis that given an economic orebody the next most important factor is good communications. It is his view that Arctic mineral development will occur quickly only where good communication has resulted in the trust and mutual respect necessary to implement the mammoth cultural changes required."

"Two types of metallic deposits have been found in the deep Arctic Ocean: Hydrothermal Fe, Cu, and Zn sulfide deposits form along Gakkel Ridge in the Eurasia Basin and associated ridges between Greenland and Europe; and iron and manganese oxide crusts (Fe-Mn crusts) and nodules, precipitated from seawater onto rock surfaces in the Amerasia Basin, contain many rare metals of economic interest. Fe-Mn crusts and nodules collected in the Amerasia Basin during 2008, 2009, and 2012 cruises on the USCGC icebreaker Healy are characterized by unique mineral and chemical compositions, very high Fe/Mn ratios, fast growth rates, and other unique characteristics compared to those formed elsewhere in the global ocean. These characteristics reflect temporal and spatial variations in geological, oceanographic, and climatic conditions in the Arctic Ocean and surrounding continents over the past ~15 Myr.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSDiscrimination diagrams show that the crusts and nodules found in the Amerasia Basin north of Alaska are hydrogenetic. However, the mineralogy is not typical for hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts and nodules, which usually include only amorphous Fe oxyhydroxide and ?-MnO2 (vernadite). The Arctic samples also include the Mn oxides birnessite and 10Å manganates (todorokite, buserite, asbolane), and the Fe minerals also include goethite, lepidocrocite, feroxyhyte, and ferrihydrite. This mineralogy reflects formation under lower oxygen conditions than typical for samples formed elsewhere.The Amerasia Basin crusts have a unique chemical composition compared with crusts from other areas of the global ocean. The key difference is the high Fe contents relative to Mn contents, which determines the types of trace metals hosted by the Fe-Mn oxide phases, and their concentrations. The high Fe/Mn ratios reflect the expansive continental shelves (>50% of the Arctic Ocean) and upper slopes that support redox cycling and release of Fe and other metals to bottom waters, and to the large fluvial input from North America and Siberia. Brine formation on the shelves and currents promote the distribution of the metals throughout the Amerasia Basin, including the deep basins."

"IntroductionCIRCULAR structures on the Arctic islands were first noticed early after World War II. During the indexing of the 1950 Royal Canadian Air Force photographs their occurrence was brought to the attention of the Geological Survey of Canada by Mr. W. B. Waugh, Surveyor General. As a result, I. C. Brown ( 195l) of the Geological Survey of Canada studied the air photographs of these structures and discussed theories that might explain their origin. The author, as a member of the Geological Survey of Canada, spent several months in 1952 and 1953 in reconnaissance study of the geology of Ellef Ringnes island, using the Isachsen meteorological station as a base. Twelve days in the summer of 1953 were spent mapping the Isachsen dome and adjacent areas. The Isachsen dome, one of several similar structures occurring on Ellef Ringnes island, is situated 35 miles southeast of the meteorological station.PhysiographyEllef Ringnes island is a mature, stream dissected plain having an average elevation of about 400 feet. The surface of the plain is undulating with a relief of about 150 feet; only a few of the numerous streams that form a dendritic drainage pattern have eroded valleys this deep. Long, low, cuesta escarpments cross' the plain, which is underlain by sedimentary rocks of Lower Cretaceous and possibly younger age. The sedimentary strata have a low regional dip to the southeast; exceptions are found in the vicinity of the domes, where the strata are up-turned, and in the plateau region, northeast of Deer bay, where they are flat lying. The plateau, which is underlain in large part by basalt, is deeply dissected and has an average elevation of 1,000 feet."

"BioteQ has successfully developed commercial operations for ARD treatment and selective metal recovery using the patented BioSulphide and Thiopaq® biological reduction technologies. The BioSulphide-Thiopaq process was developed to provide biogenic sulphide for the selective recovery of high purity metal concentrates from acidic wastewater, which are sold to recover capital costs and off-set water treatment costs. The BioSulphide-Thiopaq process can be used on a stand-alone basis or in conjunction with a lime circuit. Process advantages include: selective recovery of metals, very low metal concentrations in effluent, reduced waste sludge liability, reduced lime treatment costs and, in some cases, profitable sale of metal concentrates. Two case studies are presented to illustrate operations focused on metal recovery at the Caribou Mine, New Brunswick, Canada, and at Phelps Dodge, Arizona. A third case study is presented to highlight environmental control as well as metal recovery for treatment of ARD at the Raglan Mine in Northern Quebec. Process flowsheets, capital and operating costs are presented for the three case studies.INTRODUCTIONProtection of water quality has become one of the most important environmental challenges facing the mining industry. Although new mining projects can be designed to minimize impacts to the environment, many existing and abandoned mining operations have water quality problems. The principal cause of water contamination is acid rock drainage (ARD), which is generated when residual sulphide minerals in waste rock, tailings and other mine components and products are exposed to air and water. These reactions can produce acidity and elevated concentrations of metals in drainage and seepage that can adversely affect surface and groundwater resources. To meet regulatory criteria for water quality in the receiving environment, many mine operators must consider treatment of mine water and other effluents prior to discharge."

Nonspecific airway hyperresponsiveness is a central feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been associated with atopy in the presence of environmental exposures such as smoking. Coal miners may develop emphysema and lung function decrements related to their dust exposure. To investigate the roles of airway responsiveness and atopy in these effects, we evaluated the relationships among smoking, a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis, and airway responsiveness (AR) in a group of underground bituminous coal miners and nonmining controls. All subjects had a normal baseline percent predicted FEV1. Increased airway responsiveness was defined as a 15% or greater decrease in FEV1 following methacholine inhalation. 85 miners (45%) and 99 controls (46%) were current smokers, 59 miners (31%) and 55 controls (26%) were lifetime nonsmokers; former smokers were excluded from further analysis. Overall, 25% of 144 miners included in this analysis had increased AR, as opposed to 29% of 155 controls. Thirty-seven percent of both miners and controls had a history of seasonal rhinitis. Significantly fewer miners (15%) had a history of hay fever compared to controls (25%, p< 0.05). Figure 1 shows the prevalence of increased airway responsiveness in miners and controls in association with hay fever. In both smoking and non smoking miners the presence of a hay fever history was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with a higher prevalence of increased AR. Little effect was seen in smoking (p = 0.827) and nonsmoking (p = 0.940) controls. Figure 2 shows a similar higher prevalence of increased AR associated with symptoms of seasonal rhinitis in the mining group. This was significant (p < 0.01) only in the smoking miners. No effect was noted in the controls. These data suggest that the association of a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis symptoms with increased airway responsiveness may be more common in coal mining, compared to non-dusty occupations. Although the implication of these data are unclear, further study of miners with a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis is warranted. The European Union (EU) have recently issued new Threshold Limit Value-Time Weighted Average (TLV-TWA) for diesel exhaust contaminants, which are CO, NO2 and DPM. The new limits for CO and NO2 were issued in 2017 whilst the one for DPM was issued in 2019. However, in order to allow EU mines to formulate strategies to comply with these new limits, the EU granted a transition period in which mines could use the old limits until the new limits are enforced. The new limit for CO and NO2 will be enforced from 21 August 2023 whilst the one for DPM will be enforced from 21 February 2026. The new limit for NO2 and DPM is very low, 0.5 ppm for NO2 and 0.05 mg/m3 of Elemental Carbon (EC) for DPM. Combination of these two limits would be the lowest among all mining jurisdictions worldwide. It poses a huge compliance challenge to EU mines if they keep using diesel machines. Therefore, a study and a field trial were carried out by the author in 2019–2021 to investigate whether replacing diesel machines with Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) would be the best answer to this challenge. This paper outlines results of this study and field trial.

Some of you may be old enough to remember -- as I do -- the early days of World War II. A highly prepared, well-equipped Japanese striking force had moved like lightning across the South Pacific islands and Southeastern Asia. As the invasion force pushed its way down the Malaysian Peninsula, Singapore stood serene and beautiful, protected by its natural moat of water, busy as ever with its commercial pursuits. One can see its captains of trade and industry now, sitting com¬fortably on the veranda of the "Singapore Country Club", sipping scotch between cricket games, convinced that the weary, logistically extended Japanese force couldn&apos;t possibly cross over to their island which had been so secure for a hundred&apos; years or more. No need to remind you what happened. The brave men in their ships at sea and in the gun emplacements ashore were hopelessly out-gunned and out-maneuvered.

After 30 years of development and introduction, electronic initiation systems are now well established in blasting applications, both mining, quarrying and civil works. In terms of blast technology, it could be considered that timing is the new challenge: how to define the most appropriate sequence to improve fragmentation, reduce vibrations, avoid dilution, eliminate damage… Some classic tools have been updated and adapted to the new scenario, and are giving us good performance; on the other hand, others should be considered obsolete, given the accuracy of electronic initiation systems has exposed these tools to incoherent conclusions. Besides, other tools have appeared and are in use, providing new approaches to old issues. Additionally, not only the technical side has to be considered: safety, security, economics are well present in daily blasting activity and affect to the final decision: are electronic initiation systems the right answer to my blast?
