"SYNOPSISA discussion of the importance of flotation rate in the analysis of mineral flotation is presented. In particular, the highly interactive nature of the flotation ""system"" is emphasized where there are components of chemistry, equipment, and operating conditions simultaneously involved. It is further shown that: 1) flotation rate must be measured in order to economically optimize the performance of an industrial flotation circuit, 2) that consistent patterns exist in both flotation rate and equilibrium recovery when changing various settings of the system components, 3) that knowledge of these patterns is necessary in order to avoid making system changes that are either self-compensating or dramatically re-enforcing in some particular aspect of performance, and 4) the rate related role of the chemistry component (e.g.frothers and collectors) is often much bigger than is sometimes realized (especially in a negative sense involving overdosing of reagents). INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is widely usedl-6 in mineral beneficiation processes as a method for separating different types of finely divided solids present in a liquid (usually aqueous) suspension. The approach is based on the contacting of solids with upward moving air bubbles in an agitated vessel where the solids are exposed to chemicals (collectors) which create a condition favoring the attachment of a certain portion of the solids to the air bubbles. This selected portion is then removed in a froth stabilized by chemicals (frothers) and subsequently recovered from the flotation vessel. Depending on the settings of the various components of the flotation ""system"" (see Figure 1) it is possible to achieve a wide range of flotation performance."

Many different types of mobile equipment used in surface coal mining utilize enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators. The overburden removal process is extremely dusty and can cause excessive exposure to respirable dust, especially crystalline silica. After equipment is used for years, many components of the enclosure deteriorate and its effectiveness is greatly reduced. This report discusses a cooperative research study performed on an Ingersoll Rand DM45E surface drill, retrofitted with a new Sigma pressurization and filtration system. Respirable dust concentrations were substantially reduced from 0.64 mg/m3 during pre-testing to 0.05 mg/m3 during post-testing with the new system, representing a 92% reduction in dust levels in the drill cab. This new system appears to be a very well-built and sturdy device, well-suited for the mining industry.

The development of a process for upgrading offgrade titanium metal by electrorefining in molten salt led to an investigation of the electrotransfer characteristics of selected metals when alloyed with the titanium to be refined. Previous tests on seven binary titanium alloys showed that the degree of transfer of the alloying constituent depends on the constituent and on the operating procedurese.5 This report describes tests on electrorefining ternary mixtures of titanium with selected metallic elements. Ten alloys were prepared from high purity titanium and 2-1/2 percent of each of the metal pairs selected from the same elements used in the binary study; manganese, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, tin, molybdenum, aluminum. Operating variables were similar to those investigated in the binary alloy study that gave minimum alloy metal transfer. The data presented indicate the transfer characteristics of the various metals and combinations tested relative to each other.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. "Northern Minerals Limited’s (ASX: NTU) flagship project is the Browns Range Rare Earth Project (the Project) located in Western Australia, consisting of a number of deposits with high value, heavy rare earth elements, in particular yttrium, terbium, and dysprosium. The deposits are dominated by xenotime mineralisation, which occurs within hydrothermal silicified and hematitic breccias. The Company delivered an initial JORC compliant resource estimate for the Project at the end of 2012 of 10,500 t of contained total rare earth oxides (TREO), which was increased to 28,084t of contained TREO in October 2013 and further enlarged to 47,997 t of contained TREO in February 2014. Concurrent with the growth of the Project resource base, significant progress has been made in developing the metallurgical process for the beneficiation and extraction of rare earth elements (REE’s) from the xenotime mineralisation. Development of the beneficiation circuit evaluated several process options and selected whole-ore flotation and magnetic separation, followed by flotation (hybrid circuit) as the two preferred flowsheets to pilot, following encouraging results on the bench of 83% and 86% recovery to a 20% TREO mineral concentrate respectively. Several downstream hydrometallurgical extraction flowsheets were evaluated. However, the following two preferred process flowsheets were ultimately selected for further detailed investigation during the prefeasibility study: 1. Sulphation bake, water leach, purification, oxalate precipitation, and/or calcination to produce a mixed RE oxide; 2. Sulphation bake, water leach, phosphate precipitation, caustic conversion, HCl leach, and oxalate precipitation to produce a mixed RE oxalate. Excellent heavy rare earth oxide (HREO) extractions (~ 90%) from beneficiation concentrates were achieved on the bench for both circuits, however flowsheet 1 was ultimately selected as the preferred flowsheet to pilot due to lower capital and operating cost. A mixed rare earth oxalate (42% TREO) or oxide (92% TREO) can be produced with low levels of Th and U of 3 ppm and 6 ppm respectively."

Taking the Presidential chair of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, my first duty is to thank you for the high honour and position you have conferred on me. A position entailing the highest compliment the Institute could bestow on any of its members, and one which I feel my inability to properly fulfil, inasmuch, as you have men in your ranks of the highest scientific training residing on that great continent where the head quarters of the Institute is established, while my engagements here will not permit me leaving this colony but for a very limited period.About six years ago, during the time the mining boom was at its height, there came to this colony from England, Germany, and South Africa, several mining engineers, who in conjunction with the mining engineers here, formed an Institute which we soon found we were not able to maintain. The mining boom gradually died away, and many engineers have left the colony to find employment in other parts of the world. We made overtures to your Iqstitute to take us under your wing, which you were kind enough to do, and the outcome is that you have come over 1200 miles to hold a meeting in New Zealand. The paucity of members residing in this colony does not admit of a large attendance; but we heartily welcome you to our shores and hope you will enjoy a holiday visiting some of the principal mining centres and exchanging ideas, which not only improves our minds, and widens our field research, but also tends to lead to further economic improvements in the extraction of metals the earth contains...

"Best practice in the economic evaluation of mining projects and operations is based on the integration of geological, mining, metallurgical, environmental, marketing, economic and corporate information and strategies. Fundamentally, the economic evaluation takes into account mining, blending, stockpiling, processing, smelting, refining and marketing ore resources with grades estimated by geostatistical methodologies.Nevertheless, a realistic economic evaluation consists of a concurrent and integrated optimization process that maximizes the concentrates or products of liberated and selected ore minerals from mineral deposits. The optimum solution is obtained through a trade-off among mining, blending, stockpiling and processing ore reserves with distinct mineralogy and texture characteristics. The concurrent optimization determines both the practical mining sequence of ore reserves and the dynamic and robust mineral processing flowsheet design over the expected life of mining projects and operations.A combined risk-adverse and concurrent optimization process takes into account the spatial uncertainty of the mineralogy and texture characteristics of ore reserves. Additionally, a variety of mineral processing linear, non-linear, additive and non-additive parameters modeled spatially. The spatial uncertainty of these ore reserves characteristics and parameters has a direct impact in the expected mining sequence, mineral processing flowsheet design, concentrates or products quantity and quality, and economic value of mining projects and operations.Geometallurgical domain constrained stochastic geostatistical methodologies and multivariate mathematical models are applied for spatial uncertainty modeling of ore reserves characteristics and parameters. These mathematical models correlate the mineral processing liberation and selectivity responses of the mineralogy and textures within each geometallurgical domain. These models, in turn, are defined based on results of mineral processing and environmental testwork of unbiased and representative samples chosen for their variability. These samples are selected within mutually exclusive spatial geometallurgical uncertainty domains with similar mineralogical and textural characteristics in mineral deposits.Geometallurgical domains are defined by applying and combining multivariate statistical analysis and implicit modeling methodologies. These involve determining and constraining mineral processing liberation and selectivity properties explicitly contained in the extensive and integrated exploration drillhole database."

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, ferrochromium, alloys, Zimbabwe Zimbabwe Alloys was founded in 1949 by a consortium led by the John Brown Group. It was the first ferrochrome plant in Africa. The establishment of the refinery was necessitated by an increase in world stainless steel demand and the need to reduce cost by shipping alloy rather than chrome ore. The location of the refinery in Gweru was influenced by a number of factors, not least of which were the abundance of chrome ore deposits, access to inexpensive power from Kariba, the availability of reductant coke from Hwange, accessibility to ports (as the town was well served with rail and road networks second to none in the country), and of course cheaper labour costs. The production of Low Carbon Ferrochrome (LCFeCr) was commissioned in 1953 and produced from an Open Arc Furnace with a Submerged Arc Furnace producing Ferrosilicon Chrome (FeSiCr) that is used as a reductant in the production of LCFeCr. An experimental furnace was commissioned in 1958 to help with efficiency and control on larger furnaces. A second Submerged Furnace was commissioned in 1963. Three other Submerged Arc Furnaces were built between 1967 and 1974. Several mines were acquired between 1974 and 1984, as a strategic move to ensure the growth of the refinery. A briquetting plant was commissioned in 1977, enabling the use of friable ores to enhance the capacity of ore supplies and ore cost management. A plant to recover alloy from slag was established in 1994 to capitalize on market demand without large capital outlay that would be required to build other furnaces to increase capacity. Zimbabwe Alloys has created employment opportunities throughout the years. There have been direct employment opportunities at both the refinery and the mining divisions. With time, indirect employment was realised both upstream and downstream of the refining process, enhancing the livelihood of numerous people. Zimbabwe Alloys' involvement with various labour skills has, of necessity, enabled it to develop a culture of safety at work, home, and play. Zimbabwe Alloys has contributed to society by participating and funding various local initiatives primarily to impact positively on societal needs. The latest development was in 1996, when Zimbabwe Alloys entered into a Technical Transfer Agreement with Japan Metals and Chemicals to improve the efficiencies and hence the profitability of the LCFeCr production process. A significant quantity of various alloys has been produced since inception, and significant foreign currency has been earned for the country. This was in spite of challenges that included the cyclic nature of market prices, the upheavals of sanctions affecting the macro-economic environment, and the challenges related to the deteriorating grade of chrome ore and reductant coke.

The profitability of individual ore blocks can be classed as clearly profitable, clearly not profitable, and those in between which are by nature quite sensitive to their major cost and revenue drivers. It is often the case that the most effort goes into the least profitable ore blocks to ensure that these will in fact not generate a loss. In these cases a cut-off grade policy is often not sufficiently live to separate individual sources given the volatility of financial markets and individual circumstances of some sources particularly in remnant operations such as Mount Isa MinesÆ Lead Mine. Standard sensitivity analysis can determine which factors stope profitability is most sensitive to. However, this does not usually indicate the likelihood of any input change, nor the combined effect of multiple inputs changing. The author attempted to modify the Lead Stream financial model that determines cash margin by inserting probability distribution functions and then using Monte Carlo simulations to determine the probability of any particular ore block making a profit. This effectively demonstrates the combined effect of varying a number of inputs simultaneously to provide a probability of making a profit. The limitations of this analysis lie in the accuracy that individual probability distributions can be specified. Attempts to generate valid functions from first principles have proved difficult for a number of reasons and these are discussed along with some practical alternatives.

To protect mine personnel and moving equipment at underground roof fall areas, mine operators typically install steel sets, which are covered with wooden blocks and backfilled with an expanding type cement material. In large roof falls, the cost of void backfilling becomes prohibitively high causing some mines to leave the voids open. However, the durability of wood over time and the capability of the steel set and wood lagging to resist falling rock are unknown. This has caused concerns for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and ground control engineers. During past two years, Keystone Mining Services, LLC designed and developed various impact-resistant steel set designs that were approved by MSHA and installed in various underground fall rehabilitations. This paper presents the patent pending impact-resistant steel set design methodology, including (1) steel set design per AISC national standard, (2) design, development, and laboratory testing of a water proof composite impact resistant lagging panel, and (3) impact resistant steel set design based on Law of Conservation of Energy. Two underground cases will be included detailing the application of the system.

With the ever increasing consumption of mineral commodities, the vital question is not whether sufficient mineral quantities will be available, but rather can the known existing low grade resources be mined economically. Conventional conveyor systems are being used in some open pit mines to decrease haulage costs. n an effort, to take this concept one stop further, this contract study examines the use of a high angle conveying system in an open pit mine. It identifies available high angle conveying equipment and examines the haulage and crushing costs associated with both a conventional truck and shovel mining operation and a high angle conveyor operation. These costs analyses were performed on a hypothetical copper, taconite and phosphate mine. Information was gathered from a series of high angle conveying equipment and open pit mining operations in the U.S. Volume I includes a detailed review of the state-of-the-art in high angle conveying concepts, the, hypothetical mine development, and the cost analyses. Volume II includes the appendices.

"Mineralogical characterization and metallurgical extraction of silver is challenging due to its complex mineralogy and chemistry. Over 200 Ag-bearing minerals have been identified and a silver-rich ore body would typically contain 5 to 10 different silver minerals. Silver can occur not only as discrete microscopic (visible) silver minerals but also as submicroscopic (invisible) silver in other minerals. During processing, silver may form passivation compounds such as silver hydroxide, silver sulphide, jarosite-like silver sulphate, silver halide or silver cyanide precipitate, all of which may negatively impact on silver extraction. Knowing the deportment of silver in the ore and its metallurgical products is important in flowsheet design and plant optimization. This paper begins with the classification of silver ores and minerals and a review of processing techniques, and focuses on the major mineralogical factors to explain why and how these factors affect silver extraction. Case studies are provided to demonstrate the application of silver process mineralogy in flowsheet design and plant optimization.INTRODUCTIONSilver was known to and utilized by mankind since ancient time. Actually, it was one of the earliest metals discovered and utilized by mankind after gold and copper.Silver is the whitest metallic element. It is rare, strong, corrosion resistant, and unaffected by moisture, vegetable acids, or alkalis. Silver is also resonant, moldable, malleable, and possesses the highest thermal and electric conductivity of any substance. The chemical symbol for silver is Ag, from the Latin argentum, which means white and shining. Although silver does not react with many chemicals, it does react with sulfur, which is always present in air at trace amounts. The reaction causes silver to tarnish, and consequently it must be polished periodically to retain its luster.Silver possesses many special physical characteristics and qualities that make it useful to a variety of industries. The photography industry is the biggest user of silver compounds. Silver forms the most light-sensitive halide salts, which are essential to developing highquality photographic prints. Silver also has the highest electrical conductivity per unit volume of any metal, including copper, so it is used extensively in electronics."

"Over the past several years, Svedala has developed a continuous charge monitor (CCM) for tumbling mills. It consists of a strain gauge embedded into a rubber lifter and associated electronics. This paper describes the installation and use of such a device on a SAG mill at the Holt-McDermott Mine. Comparison to measured static volumetric load and bearing pressure and inclusion of the measurement into a control strategy and its potential for condition monitoring is discussed. INTRODUCTIONWhile the measurement of load is very important in all kinds of grinding applications, the biggest benefits are expected from AG and SAG milling. This is what motivated Holt-McDermott to take a closer look at this problem, with a view to optimizing SAG mill performance.In many cases, the SAG mill control problem can be stated as maximizing throughput while avoiding a volumetric overload, with the other constraints (e.g. power, grind size, upstream/downstream equipment constraints, etc.) playing a less important role. This is certainly true at Holt-McDermott where the SAG mill is the production bottleneck about 90% of the time, and anything that can be done to increase SAG mill throughput will have a significant impact on operating profit.Although the goal of maximizing throughput while avoiding volumetric overload is simple to state, it has proven to be much more difficult to achieve. The mineral processing industry has expended a great deal of time and effort to devise control strategies in the pursuit of this objective. While much progress has been made, there is still room for considerable improvement. Across the industry it is probably fair to say that overloads occur relatively infrequently, but the real losses accrue as a result of the tendency to run rather conservatively."

This is my second visit to South Africa, and I am struck by the similarities between our countries. This extends to the professional issues associated with engineering and competencies in particular. I propose to outline two exciting stories today. ? Development of competency standards for professional engineers in Australia. ? Development of a management programme which has assisted professional engineers regain positions of leadership in Australian industry and government. "INTRODUCTION The term ""friability"" as applied to coal may be defined as the physical property of coal which expresses its tendency to become reduced in size during handling as a result of such external forces as impact and attrition. Thus friability is a quantitative concept and property, and hence can only be defined in relative terms or in terms of measurement. Methods of measurement are difficult to formulate and apply because coal is anything but homogeneous in physical structure and chemical constitution. aMoreover, friability itself is a composite property obviously dependent upon a group of other specific characteristics such as cleavage, fracture, tenacity, hardness, and elasticity, which vary from coal to coal with change in rank and even between individual coals of the same rank. These characteristics affect the friability values of different coals to varying degrees, but this fact does not impair the usefulness of and the need for friability measurements.The amount of breakage or degradation in size that a coal suffers in mining, preparation, and subsequent handling depends upon its inherent friability and the severity of the handling treatment which it receives from the time it is taken from the bed until it reaches the consumer. The value of the coal to the producer and jobber depends in large measure upon these same factors--friability and severity of treatment—because the larger sizes still command a premium in the ordinary market. Although much has been accomplished by the coal-producing industry in minimizing the breakage of coal in mining and preparation, it is apparent that additional reductions in breakage must await further improvements in design of coal-handling equipment. Such improvements will result from more intensive investigations of the extent of breakage or degradation in size occasioned by specific mining and handling operations and the development and application of standardized methods of evaluating friability.The work described in this report was undertaken to assist in the development of standard methods for evaluating the friability of coal. Specifically, the work deals with a Comparison of the various methods previously proposed for estimating the friability of coal and coal products. This same objective is now being sought at a number of other institutions, both in the United States and Canada, by a committee of the American Society for Testing Materials. It is believed that by providing additional information concerning a property of coal pertinent to its increased usefulness, the work described will supplement and increase the useful of the data which long have been, and still are being, furnished by the bureau of Mines on the composition of coals of the United States."

The performance of the V-Day Mine near Danville, Illinois has been evaluated from data extending over about a 20 year period. The area included in this study involves over 16 acres. Essentially this entire area has progressively subsided. Extensive data has been collected on the geologic and mining conditions, the subsidence movements, as well as on the response of the surface structures to the subsidence. In this paper a detailed summary of the site conditions is given, and the mechanics of progressive failure of the studied room and pillar mine is postulated. These progressive long-term failures of the V-Day are then compared to other similar mine failures in Illinois. Some overall, but tentative, long-term strength evaluations are presented as well.

In the development of commercial vehicles as well as of passenger cars, the effects of vehicle vibrations on operating safety, health and comfort can only be predicted by numerical simulation when appropriate occupant models are available. Such models must be based on human anatomy and have dynamic properties of real humans in order to achieve realistic results. Since human dynamic behavior depend on posture and percentile, the occupant model needs to be adjustable to these parameters with respect to geometry and dynamic properties [1,2]. Dynamic Human Finite-Element-Model CASIMIR CASIMIR is a non-linear, dynamic finite-element-model of the human body. It consists of a dynamic model of the upper torso with head, neck, shoulders and arms as well as of a dynamic model of the lower extremity with pelvis and legs. The most important part is the lumbar area with dynamic non-linear models of the lumbar spine and of back and abdominal musculature. The frequency-dependent characteristics of the intervertebral discs and the effects of muscle activation and non-linear frequency-dependent muscle properties are included. In the latest stage of development, CASIMIR has been equipped with a compliant model of the body surface in the contact areas to the seat. This results in a very realistic transmission of static and vibrational forces into the human body, see fig. 1. Intense model verification and validation has been performed in all stages of model development, starting with validation of small components like intervertebral disc, ending with validation of whole-body-vibrations using measurements of the dynamic mass / mechanical impedance [4]. For an in-detail examination of stresses in the vertebral bodies and discs, a non-linear submodel of the lumbar spine with an increased number of degrees of freedom can be coupled to the whole-body-model, enabling the researcher to examine local effects of vibrations and single shocks on the lumbar materials. [ ] Since it is well known that human dynamic behavior is significantly affected by anthropometric data and posture, CASIMIR can be individualized to the anthropometric status of single individuals or to the mean values for specific percentile groups. Furthermore, posture can be adjusted to the seating conditions applicable to a specific vehicle. Posture modification capabilities include the variation of the lumbar lordosis [3].

The objective of this study was to investigate the environmental effects of slaking of surface mine spoils. To accomplish this, both field and laboratory programs were undertaken, supplemented by a thorough literature search. The field program consisted of drilling the highwall as well as test pitting in recent, two-, five, and ten- year-old spoil piles at four active mining sites in the eastern bituminous coal fields. Pertinent observations were made and samples collected for laboratory analyses which consisted of several standard geotechnical, agronomic, and geochemical tests. Durability tests utilized included jar slake, cyclic wet-dry, rate of slake, and slake durability tests. Correlation between field and laboratory portions was made- and results presented. The report is concluded with a discussion of the slaking process and associated environmental impacts, proposal of a preliminary classification system for use in premine planning, and presentation of management techniques to optimize the slaking process.

Petroleum exploration in onshore Gippsland was directed in the 1950s and 1960s towards plays in the basal Latrobe and Strzelecki Groups, but these became forgotten in the 1970s with the Latrobe play discoveries offshore. The principal explorationists of the time were Woodside Oil and Arco Ltd, who then departed the scene after drilling some 18 wells without major success. In the late-1980s successful hydrocarbon finds in equivalent age Otway Group sediments in the Otway Basin were made and in early 1990 Tyers Petroleum began investigations into Strzelecki Group prospects as applied to the onshore Gippsland Basin. Some 18 anticlines have been mapped, based on shallower coal exploration drilling in the Latrobe Group, which from seismic and gravity evidence are believed to unconformably overlie similar anticlinal structures in the underlying Strzelecki Group. Strzelecki targets of interest within drilling depth are the basal Tyers Conglomerate/Rintouls Creek Sandstone Formations which outcrop in the north of the Latrobe Valley and are analogous to the Pretty Hill Sandstone in the Otway Basin. In addition, intra-Strzelecki Group targets similar to Heathfield and Windermere Sandstone Members are also considered to be present. Good source rocks are abundant including coal seams and carbonaceous sediments of Neocomian and Jurassic age, which lie within the oil window. Seal is provided by the overlying Aptian-Albian aged volcanogenic sediments. The Tyers/Rintouls sandstones - a target in the Woodside/Arco wells, with two exceptions, were not reached. Encouraging intra-Strzelecki shows were reported in many of the wells. Basal and intra-Strzelecki porous quartzose sandstones remain one of the few untested plays left in the Gippsland Basin and, in the onshore, merit extra attention as they he within the oil window at economically drillable depths.
