About two-thirds of the manufactured gas supplied to the public by the gas plants in the Illinois district is cnrbureted water gas. The leading generator fuel is coke, ma.de in by-product c.oke ovens or in retorts, chiefly from eastern gas coals. During the fall and winter of 1917-18, when the demand for coke by war industries and the restrictions of the Fuel Administration in connection with the transportation of coke from eastern States made it almost impossible for many gas companies to obtain their coke requireml'nts, several water-gas plants had to use bituminous coal as generator fud. Many operating difficulties were encountered, some of which were solved more or less satisfactorily in different plants. A number of plants attacked the problem rather blindly because facilities for making tests were lacking and because technical men were too busy with labor and supply problems to study thoroughly the conditions involved or to ascertain what other plants had done with this fuel. It was therefore with the hope of assisting the gas industry during this critical period, and of promoting the use of Central District coals for gas making, that the Illinois Mining Investigations, a joint agency of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Geological Survey Division undertook the, tests discussed in this paper. • This report was compiled under the auspices of a technical committee appointed by Gov. Frank 0. Lowden to promote the use of Central District coals in gas manufacture as a war measure. This committee included the following representatives of the various agencies concerned: U. S. We present an analysis of the propagation in a uniform tunnel of semi -circular cross section that contains two axial conductors. In particular, we show that, even if one of these conductors has high ohmic loss, one of the two propagating modes has relatively low attenuation. This corresponds to the situation where an unloaded dedicated wire is used to improve radio frequency communication in a mine tunnel that contains a heavily loaded trolley wire.

"The recent combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) can provide considerable insight into the performance of flotation cells. One area of interest from a fundamental equipment design perspective has been the influence of flotation cell size and the inflow rate on the metallurgical performance of the cell. One of the specific design objectives when increasing the size of flotation cells, or increasing the feed flow to the flotation cell, is to ensure that the feed stream flowing into the cell does not have an opportunity to bypass the mechanism.This paper describes the initial modeling efforts to quantify the inter-relationship of cell size, inflow rates, and feed and discharge box placement, on the retention time distribution of solids in the flotation cell, and the fraction of particles that bypass the mechanism on a size by size basis.INTRODUCTIONThe great majority of newly installed cells in mineral processing plants world-wide are of the cylindrical tank design and this tank shape offers a number of hydraulic advantages over the older style of square cells. Cylindrical cells give symmetrical flow patterns and by careful design of the mechanism and tank internals, the flow patterns generated can concentrate the more intense mixing in the lower portion of the cell to promote good solids suspension and particlebubble contact. Simultaneously, cylindrical tank design gives a more quiescent upper zone for particle-bubble transport into the froth zone. These symmetrical flow patterns are naturally disturbed in normal operation by the slurry inflow and outflow from the individual cells. The challenge for flotation cell designers is to determine the magnitude of these flow disturbances, and to assess whether or when the inflow and outflow rates have a sufficient impact on the hydraulic flow patterns so as to potentially affect the metallurgical performance of the flotation cell."

By March 2001, shrinking global markets, reduced consumer spending and declines in domestic manufacturing and industrial output ended the longest economic expansion in US history and pushed the nation’s economy into its first recession in a decade. Aggravated by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, the recession led to large reductions in the domestic production of processed mineral materials. Some of the most significant production declines in the US metals industry were registered by aluminum, copper and steel producers. They faced strong foreign competition, higher energy costs and lower prices for their products. However, homebuilding and other domestic construction sectors — major users of nonmetallic mineral products such as cement, brick, glass and stone — remained strong enough to help raise the output of industrial mineral materials slightly above previous year levels. A strong US dollar continued to weaken the competitive stance of US metal and nonmetallic mineral materials companies alike against foreign producers in markets at home and abroad.

Sustainable development is at odds with reality in the minerals industry. Increasing world population and aspirations are leading to increased energy and mineral consumption. Non-renewable fossil fuels are being exploited at a much faster rate than they are being discovered. Mineral reserves are diminishing and of lower grade. Despite recycling, many of the economic reserves of the rarer metals on which technological society has come to depend are being depleted, and many of the bulk metals are being exploited at ever increasing rates. And yet, mining continues, with a long-term downtrend in commodity prices, matched by more efficient mining and processing. Will society turn to a low carbon economy before fossil fuels are depleted? Will prices come to better reflect the full cost of mineral production? Will technology save us, or is it at the root of the problem? The key drivers continue to be an ever increasing aspirational population and the law of supply and demand, rather than sustainability considerations. The paper illustrates this with examples of worldwide and Australian data.

ALTHOUGH the element titanium was discovered by William Gregor in 1790, over a hundred years passed before it was put to commercial use. The first commercial application of titanium was as an alloy additive to iron and steel, and the first ferroalloys were produced domestically in 1906. Titanium pigments were developed somewhat later and have been produced in the United States since 1918. The use of titaniferous material in welding-rod coatings first gained acceptance ill the mid-30's. The metal titanium has only had commercial importance since 1948; domestic production for that year was 10 tons. The relative importance of these major uses of titanium in various forms may he gaged by the consumption of titanium dioxide (Ti02) for these purposes in 1954. Of a total of 440,000 short tons of Ti02 consumed in 1954, 95 percent of the total was consumed for pigments; 2 percent for welding-rod coatings; 1 percent for non-titanium-base alloys and carbide; and 2 percent for miscellaneous uses. The titanium-metal industry is in its infancy, but it has more than doubled its output every year from 1948 to 1954, reaching 5,370 short tons in 1954.

Identifying high value areas of unmined coal when large quantities of coal are available relative to annual markets is difficult because of the uncertainty of when the coal is to be mined. A GIS based methodology developed to value reserve coal in a producing coal region for the purpose of ad valorem taxation also identifies high value areas for mining investment. The methodology is unique in that it accounts for most mining, environmental, and market factors to determine when specific properties are to be mined. The methodology and data base are useful for directing regional exploration and acquisition activities toward most favorable areas.

"The Atlantis-Il-Deep is a stratified metalliferous deposit located along the median valley of the Red Sea at a water depth of about 2200 m. The metal-bearing mud contains sulphides of zinc, copper and iron with significant amounts of silver, gold and cobalt. A variety of oxide, siliceous and carbonaceous gangue material is also present. Long sediment cores indicate that the thickness of the deposit may reach 25 m, but the average kriged thickness of metal-rich sediments is about 11 m.Mining geostatistics was applied to estimate the Red Sea offshore mineral resources. Experimental semi-variograms were computed along 0 ± 180 degrees and then models were fitted to analyze the mineralization phenomenon. Kriging estimates indicate that 696.330 million t of bulk sediments contain 1.891 million t of zinc, 0.425 million t of copper and 3. 75 thousand t of silver. Gold and cobalt contents were calculated from the analysis of solids in flotation concentrates as 47 t and 5368 t respectively. The significant outcome of implementing geostatistics to the Red Sea brine precipitates is not only for the evaluation of metal resources, but it also provides a useful tool in the optimization of selective dredging of appropriate areas to be mined. IntroductionThe discovery and extensive exploration of hot brines and hydrothermal sediments in the Red Sea median valley revealed the fact that the Atlantis-II-Deep is a potentially exploitable metalliferous mud in the economic sense. Sediments in the mineralized deep are composed mainly of oxides, various types of silicates and sulphides with considerable concentrations of zinc, copper, cadmium, silver and gold. The mineral-rich deposit, located at a mean water depth of about 2000 m, has an average thickness of 11 m, and is covered by a brine layer having a temperature of 60°C."

"BHP-Billiton’s Minera Escondida Limitada is one of the world’s largest copper producers. It treats a combined 88 million tons of copper ore per year through its two concentrators: Los Colorados and Laguna Seca. Over the past three years, metallurgical sampling has been performed at the Laguna Seca concentrator to calibrate both the JKSimMet and JKSimFloat grinding and flotation simulators. In the past, the calibrated simulators have been used to predict the effect of changes in operating conditions in the grinding and flotation circuits separately. To assist in the development of future processing options, predictions were required of the effect of changing grinding circuit conditions on flotation performance. This was achieved by using an integrated grinding and flotation simulation. The grinding circuit performance was predicted under different operating conditions (such as tonnage rate and product grind size) using JKSimMet, and these results were then used in JKSimFloat to predict the flotation performance for the new grinding circuit product. This combination of the simulators allows both the effects of residence time and grind size on flotation performance to be investigated.This paper presents the first combined grinding and simulation modelling and simulation case study using JKSimMet and JKSimFloat. The modelling and simulation methodologies for the grinding and flotation circuits are discussed along with the circuit simulations that were performed. The simulator predictions are presented in conjunction with independent laboratory results of the new operating conditions. The ability to predict flotation circuit performance based on changes in grinding circuit performance is also discussed. This methodology provides improved predictions of flotation circuit performance when grinding circuit changes (including grinding capacity increases) are made.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, the grinding and flotation research groups at the Julius Krutschnitt Minerals Research Centre - JKMRC (Brisbane, Australia), University of Cape Town (Cape Town, South Africa) and McGill University (Montreal, Canada) have been developing a methodology for optimising grinding and flotation plants using actual plant data together with semi-empirical sub-process models. The project is being conducted as part of the Australian Minerals Industry Research Association (AMIRA) P9 Project, titled “The Optimisation of Mineral Processes by Modelling and Simulation”. The project first commenced in 1962 and is currently in its “Nth” phase."

The need for standardizing methods of arriving at definite conclusions regarding the cleanability of a given coal, and for measuring the performance of coal-cleaning equipment, is constantly increasing. Earlier notes by the author on this subject are amplified in this paper, because he believes that better preparation of bituminous coal is a partial solution of the coal operators' troubles. Washability Studies The term "washability" of coal was coined when washing was the universal method of separating coal from its impurities by utilizing their difference in specific gravity. This and analogous terms are still used in their broad sense although pneumatic or air separation is now used to clean coal. These terms are so used in this paper. Too much time or money can hardly be spent on "feed surveys') to get a "picture" of the coal that is to be cleaned. There have been too many "rule of thumb" methods used. Screen analyses and "sink-and-float" tests on the raw coal enable the coal operator and washery man to predict within reasonable limits the results that may be expected from any efficient cleaning apparatus. The sizes to be examined to get the picture are optional to the investigator. In modern wet washing, the range is from 4 to 0 in. Hand-picking on properly constructed belts is perhaps the standard for cleaning above these sizes. A good picture of the coal may be obtained by the following screen analysis: 3½ to 1¼ in. 1¼ to 3½ in. ½ to 5/16 in. 5/16 in. to 14 mesh 14 to 28 mesh 28 to 48 mesh and for very complete data on the fines: 48 to 100 mesh 100 to 200 mesh and through 200 mesh

This paper presents the main features of coal mining in Japan, as determined by the author while attending the International Coal Conference in October of 1963. The general economy of the country is considered, and the requirements for coking coal are outlined. Statistics and comments on production and consumption are then given, with accompanying cost figures, and the characteristics of Japanese coal mining are compared with those of Canada. Mining methods and underground transportation are covered, with emphasis on undersea mining. Finally, a description is given of a visit to the Miike colliery, the largest in Japan. To say or to write what you do no6 think, for the mere sake of talking or writing, is a verbal exercise that must be performed with extraordinary skill if it is to be attractive. Affectations are rarely attractive, rarely effective. To be natural is to be yourself, not a poseur; to give the reader the best of yourself, instead of re-warming the baked meats of yesterday. Quotations-which are second-hand thoughts-will serve occasionally when the thing you want to say has been said so well by another that it would be waste of energy to try to say it better; but, as a rule, the utterance of the writer himself is more interesting than the quotation, because the writer brings something of himself to bear on the subject, and for the moment is more in touch with the reader than any dear departed author. Therefore, say things as best you can in your own way, neither in borrowed words nor in the phraseology that mimics another. "Current understanding of the mechanisms by which glassy and crystalline thin ribbons are formed in high speed continuous casting processes is considered. A computer model of the combined heat and momentum transfer during melt spinning has been developed. The influence of roll velocity and of heat transfer coefficient (between the melt and the roll) on the temperature and velocity distributions within the melt puddle is analysed and the thickness of the extracted ribbon computed. The relative importance of heat and momentum transfer under different conditions is assessed and differences between the casting of crystalline and amorphous strip highlighted.IntroductionHigh speed continuous casting of thin metallic ribbon and strip is currently of considerable interest both to metal processers and to those studying process mechanisms. The practical interest arises both from the potential economic benefits to be gained from a shorter and more energy-efficient production route and from the ability to obtain extended and uniform thin strip having a metastable microcrystalline or amorphous structure with enhanced or unique properties. The latter arise from the rapid solidification associated with the cooling of very thin sections of melt brought into intimate thermal contact with one or two rapidly moving heat sinks.The principal processes for casting thin strip include free jet, chill-block melt-spinning (GBMS) (1), melt drag (MD) (2), planar flow casting (PFG) (3) and twin-roll casting (TRG) (4). For the first three of these, all essentially variants of melt-spinning, melt flows through a nozzle onto the circumferential surface of a rapidly rotating roll, whereas for TRG the melt passes into the nip between two contra-rotating rolls. We shall be concerned in this paper with the single-roll melt spinning processes only. For these, a puddle is established where the melt contacts the roll surface and the length of this puddle l is a function of the process conditions, notably the circumferential velocity of the roll Us and the volumetric flow rate of the melt Q. The contact time between any point on the roll surface and this puddle, or residence time eR(= l /Us) determines the thickness of ribbon t extracted from the puddle. This thickness, in turn, partly governs the cooling rate T and the amount of undercooling in the melt and thus the microstructure of the solidified ribbon."

Loveday (National Institute for Metallurgy, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa) - The paper and subsequent technical note' describing a method of determining the parameters of the three-parameter size-distribution equation developed in the paper were read with much interest. This equation was also used at National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) to describe size distributions in grinding tests, because it was necessary to have a single equation to describe the size distribution at any time during a test. A graphical method also was used to determine the three parameters, and the use of this method as an alternative to Professor Harris's latest method is discussed here. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, DC furnaces, electric smelter, FeCr, FeNi, FeMn, Si metal, ferro-alloys, platinum production, circular furnace, energy recovery system In 1906, the first submerged-arc furnace was supplied by SMS Siemag. Since then, the division has become established in various industries such as ferro-alloys and non-ferrous metals, and in numerous other special applications. During the evolution of this technology, more efficient units with longer lifetimes were developed. Today, especially the potential of DC-based smelters, raises worldwide attention, with some projects having already started to implement this kind of technology. This paper evaluates SMS Siemag?s general viewpoint regarding the potential application of DC smelter technology and possible options for the ferro-alloy and non-ferrous industry. SMS Siemag is currently executing a FeCr project in Kazakhstan, where four of the world?s largest closed-type DC smelting furnaces, with a power input of 72 MW, will be installed. These furnaces include the latest technological features of modern DC smelters, which are described in this paper. SMS Siemag has started a long-term research and development project allowing a direct comparison of AC versus DC technology on a large scale, using a recently installed 1 MVA test furnace at the IME at the University of Aachen, in Germany. For open-type ferro-alloy and Si-metal furnaces, SMS Siemag has developed an energy recovery system, which is presented in this paper.

"This paper examines test results and grinding mill design for the recent Fortune Minerals’ NICO Project, located in the Northwest Territories. SAG milling and rod milling options are compared. Rod milling is clearly shown to be the best option because of the ore’s extreme resistance to breakage in a SAG mill environment.Surprisingly, the Bond Ball Mill Wi was 13 kWh/t for this ore. The Bond Rod Mill Wi was 20 kWh/t, whereas the SAG pinion energy to grind the ore to T80 1.7 mm was 30 kWh/t. The existence of ore with this ratio of SAG hardness to Bond BM Wi has not been previously observed. If not considered, this critical relationship may adversely impact the accuracy of mill design. This paper substantiates the significance of these findings to achieve successful grinding design on ore that is macro-competent during primary size reduction, but relatively normal during secondary grinding.INTRODUCTIONThe NICO Cobalt-Gold-Bismuth-Copper deposit is located 160 km northwest of the City of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. It is the largest IOCG-type deposit (aka Olympic Dam-type) currently recognized in Canada with Mineral Reserves of 21.8 million tonnes contained within a larger 57 million tonne, lower-grade Mineral Resource. The project, owned 100% by Fortune Minerals Limited, has been assessed in a positive definitive feasibility study, subject to underground test mining and pilot plant testing, and is now in the permitting stage to develop a combined open pit and underground mine and process plant. An updated process flow sheet incorporates conventional crushing, grinding and bulk flotation, followed by filtration for shipment of a concentrate to a purpose-built refinery proposed to be built near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. At the refinery, separate bismuth and cobalt concentrates will be produced following regrinding. The hydrometallurgical process methods include: pressure acid leach, precipitation, ion exchange, and electro-winning for recovery of cobalt as 99.8% cathode; solvent extraction and electro-winning of by-product copper cathode; ferric chloride leach and electro-winning for recovery of bismuth as 99.5% cathode; and cyanidation of the leach residues for recovery of gold as doré."

In 1995, mining engineer Alain Gachet thought about using Earth-observation satellite imagery to search for precious minerals. The latest radar Earth-observation satellite, Canada’s RADARSAT-1, had just been successfully launched at the time, creating new opportunities for commercial applications. Gachet was working in Congo Brazzaville as an oil executive and general secretary of Elf Congo for the French national oil company Elf Aquitaine. He understood that the RADARSAT-1 launch promised new and cost-effective sources of data for mineral and oil exploration. “It was early 1996 before I ordered my firstRADARSAT-1 satellite images,” said Gachet. “I was first struck by the quantity of information delivered by the radar images. Linear structures and faults were clearly defined and subtle topographic features were tremendously enhanced,” he said. “It was ‘tree top geology,’ but this kind of information appeared to be key for finding new gold seams.”
