The properties of some heavy liquids which can be used in sink-float separations are discussed with major emphasis being given to the halogenated hydrocarbons. Data are presented on density, viscosity, thermal characteristics and the effects of moisture and temperature on the corrosiveness of the liquids towards various materials of construction. The toxicity of these materials, the hazards involved in handling them, and the procedures for handling them safely are also discussed. True liquids have certain advantages over colloidal suspensions for sink-float separation of minerals which makes their use especially advantageous when close separations, fine particle sizes or water-soluble minerals are to be treated. For best separating results, the medium should have an easily controlled, uniform, stable density. Here, true liquids have the advantages of allowing closer control of density and of not requiring agitation to maintain a uniform den- sity in the equipment. Low viscosities are desired in a separating liquid so that rapid separations of fine material can be made. Many liquids have lower viscosities than the colloidal suspensions at operating gravities of 1.4 to 5.0. For economic reasons and to prevent contamination of the product, the separating medium must be easily and completely removed from the ore. Normally, true liquids must be more completely removed than the cheaper suspensions and thus cause more problems in this area. The fact that the medium should not react with the minerals, air, water or the common materials of construction limits the choice of liquids which can be used, but many are available which are sufficiently stable. A more serious objection to the use of true liquids is that many of them present a toxic hazard to operating personnel and users of the product. Most true liquids are toxic to some extent, but modem knowledge of toxicity allows us to recognize the hazards inherent in handling them and enables us to design around them. Three types of true liquids are available for this use: 1) Halogenated hydrocarbons cover the gravity range from 1.2 to 3.3. They are generally more volatile and less viscous than the other liquids.

The demands on development in London in recent years has led to the increasing use of top down construction methods in which there is a requirement to place steel columns to high tolerances into large diameter bored piles with deep cut-offs. A number of different proposals for the sequence of construction are being suggested. The tolerances requires for the steel columns are becoming increasingly stringent. This review examines a number of basic construction proposals and comments on the problems and solutions used by foundation contractors to provide the required foundations.

A method is presented for calculating individual gas and oil or water and oil relative permeabilities from data obtained during a gas drive or a waterflood experiment performed on a linear porous body. The method has been tested and found both rapid and reliable for normal-sized core samples. INTRODUCTION Individual oil and gas or oil and water relative permeabilities are required for a number of reservoir engineering applications. Chief among these is the evaluation of oil displacement under conditions where gravitational effects are significant, such as a water drive or crestal gas injection in a steeply dipping oil reservoir. Numerous proposed methods of obtaining relative permeability data on reservoir core samples have been too tedious and time consuming for practical use, or have yielded questionable and sometimes inconsistent results. A method has been developed by which the individual relative permeability curves can be calculated from data collected during a displacement test. The method is based on sound theoretical considerations. Using this method, with a properly designed experimental procedure, relative permeability curves can be obtained using core samples of normal size (i.e., 2 to 3 in. in length and 1 to 2 in. in diameter) within a few days after receipt of the core. In a recent publication D. A. Efros1 describes an approach to the calculation of individual relative permeabilities that is based on the same theoretical considerations. We believe the approach described in the present paper is more adaptable to practical application than the method implied by Efros. In addition, comparisons with independently determined relative permeabilities are furnished to substantiate the reliability of the new method. DERIVATION Previously the theory of Buckley and Leverett as extended by Welge2 as been used to calculate the ratio of relative permeabilities. In the derivation which follows, this theory is further extended to permit calculation of the individual relative permeabilities. The theory assumes two conditions which must be achieved before the method is applicable. They are that the flow velocity be high enough to achieve what has been termed stabilized displacement,3 and that the flow velocity is constant at all cross sections of the linear porous body. In stabilized displacement the flowing pressure gradient is high compared with the capillary pressure difference between the flowing phases. The high pressure drop insures that the portion of the core in which capillary effects predominate will be compressed to a negligibly small fraction of the total pore space. During the year 1940 a complete investigation was made of the whole of the stoping operations throughout the Great Boulder Mine and, as a result, it was decided to convert some of the existing shrinkage stopes into cut-and-fill stopes, and also to mine many of the more recently developed ore blocks by the latter method. The necessity for filling was due primarily to the structure of the ore blocks, the character of the walls and possible excessive dilution, but was influenced also by the grade of the ore-block and by the fact that cleaner mining can be carried out by cut-and-fill stoping.The comparatively few cut-and-fill stopes in operation prior to 1940 had been filled mainly with waste rock from development work, but as the amount of this material available, or likely to become available, would have been wholly inadequate for future operations, it was proposed to construct a system of passes to supply filling material from the surface.Owing to the distribution of the stopes, no central pass or system of passes could be devised which would service all the stopes satisfactorily.However, work was commenced on two passes, one designed to service the cut-and-fill stopes in the Eastern Section of the mine, and another to service those in the Western Section. It was realised that these passes could serve only a small proportion of the total number of Stopes (Figs. 1 and 2). During the progress of this work experiments were undertaken to test the possibility of using filtered tailings underground as an adjunct to the above scheme, but for various reasons these were only partially completed.Early in 1942 it was suggested by the Mill Superintendent that an attempt be made to fill with wet classified flotation tailings as practised at Mt. Lyell in Tasmania and at the Triton Mine at Reedy, West Australia. For the purpose of testing this, an experimental stope was prepared on the 309-ft. level, "X" Lode. This was 100 feet long and averaged 4 feet in width. Water-tight rearings were built at each end of the stope and waste rock fill was spread to a height of 6 to 8 feet above the timber. Used filter cloths were laid on top of the fill and brought a few feet, up the walls of the stope. A two-inch victaulic drainage line was then placed in position, the end passing through a hole in one of the bearings and thence to a sump. In the central portion of the stope two vertical pipes were brought up from this line. Introduction The Fortitude deposit is located in Nevada's Battle Mountain mining district in the central Great Basin region of the Basin and Range province of the western US. The deposit is at Copper Canyon in the southernmost portion of the district, about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain (Fig. 1). Mining activity in the district began in 1866 (Roberts and Arnold, 1965). Base and precious metals were mined by underground methods intermittently until 1955. Placer gold was first discovered at Copper Canyon in 1912. Moderate scale dredging of alluvial gravel at the mouth of Copper Canyon was conducted by the Natomas Co. from 1944 to 1955 (Johnson, 1973). In 1967, Duval Corp. began large scale open-pit copper mining. (Sayers, Tippett, and Fields, 1968). Copper prices decreased and precious metals prices increased in the mid-1970s so Duval's exploration efforts at Copper Canyon shifted to precious metals. These exploration efforts resulted in the discovery of the Tomboy-Minnie deposits and shortly afterward, the Northeast Extension deposit at Copper Canyon (Blake, Wotruba, and Theodore, 1984; Fig. 2). The Fortitude deposit was discovered in late 1980, after Duval had proceeded with precious metals production at Copper Canyon. Converting the existing plant facilities at Copper Canyon to a precious metals recovery system was completed in 1978 (Jackson, 1982). Production from the Tomboy-Minnie deposits began in early 1979. Precious metals production moved to the Northeast Extension deposit in 1982. In late 1984, after three years of preproduction stripping and mining of the Upper Fortitude ore zone, production from the higher grade Lower Fortitude ore zone began. Currently, Battle Mountain Gold Co. operates the Fortitude deposit. Production from the Battle Mountain mining district before 1967 included 4.6 t (150,000 oz) of gold, 65.3 t (2.1 million oz) of silver, 13.6 kt (15,000 st) of copper, 4.5 kt (5,000 st) of lead, and 13.6 kt (15,000 st) of zinc (Roberts and Arnold, 1965). At the time of Duval's 1967 start-up, ore reserves at Copper Canyon included 12.6 Mt (14 million st) in the East ore body and another 3.6 Mt (4 million st) in the West ore body. Both had average grades of 0.79% copper, 16.1 g/t (0.47 oz per st) silver and 0.86 g/t (0.025 oz per st) gold (Blake et al., 1984). The Tomboy-Minnie deposits collectively contained 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st) of ore grading 3.09 g/t (0.09 oz per st) gold and 9.6 g/t (0.28 oz per st) silver. The Northeast Extension reserves were identified as 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of ore with an average grade of 2.9 g/t (0.085 oz per st) gold and 5.1 g/t (0.15 oz per st) silver. Initial total reserve estimates for the Fortitude deposit were 14.5 Mt (16 million st) grading 5.14 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold and 29.8 g/t (0.87 oz per st) silver (Jackson, 1982). Therefore, before large scale mining, the Copper Canyon area contained a minimum of 102.6 t (3.3 million oz) of gold and 541 t (17.4 million oz) of silver as mineable reserves. The Fortitude deposit reserves as of Jan. 1, 1985 were 10.6 Mt (11 million st) grading at 5.28 g/t (0.154 oz per st) gold and 28.5 g/t (0.83 oz per st) silver. The pile foundation of Sutong bridge pylons is an extra large pile foundation. The length of piles is 115m, and the diameter of the piles is 2.5-2.8m. Since the traditional design method may not determine the settlement and capacity reasonably for such a large pile foundation, the finite element method is used to study stress and deformation of the foundation. The interface element is set to simulate the possible slide between piles and soil layers. The hyperbolic model is taken for soils. Parameters are determined from triaxial test first, and then modified by back analysis on basis of in-situ loading test. The computation results show that the axial force of piles changes with the location of the pile. Outer piles support greater axial force and also friction. The settlement will not be greater than 26cm. The stress and deformation of the pile cap, the abutment, are obtained too. The whole foundation is safe.

Individuals interested in an overview of retreat mining can confine themselves to the first few chapters. Those interested in mine planning, should read the middle chapters as well. Those interested in the development of a foreman's handbook should read the entire manual.

The commission may be permitted to express its earnest hope that the litigation which comes to an end with the findings and recom- mendations herein set forth will be considered by both parties to the action as definitely and equitably decided. The commission trusts that its work will show the value of the commission form of settlement and that its work will serve as a prece- dent to be followed in disputes relative to technical subjects. If the work of the commission is productive of a tendency on the part of technical litigants to avoid the use of the courts for the settlement of disputes it will not have been done in vain. Such tendency will surely grow and ultimately such differences will be arbitrated by technically trained men without recourse to the courts of law. Appended to the report of the findings of the commission are to be found the detailed reports covering the several lines of inquiry and investigation carried on by the commission and upon which its findings are based, and also a detailed statement of the fiscal affairs of the commission. A word of explanation is necessary in regard to the fiscal statement. While each party to the litigation has agreed to bear one-half of the expense of the investigations of the commission, it will be noted that the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. is credited with $21,000, while Solano County is credited with but $6,000. In a short chronological review the development concepts and improvements in steel roadway support are shown. The successful standardization concept of RAG Deutsche Steinkohle and currently used support systems are important topics. The history of optimizing the material properties for the steel arch support with different alloys up to the tempering used today is discussed. The present-day application of the steel support is additionally presented. Today, it represents a system component of modern roadway support also for highly stressed roadways. In addition to the yielding roadway arch support, this overall system - the combination support - consists of the additional components of a rockbolting system and concrete backfilling. The comparison of the application areas for each individual partial system with the overall system illustrates its high performance capability. Actual practical experience with the state of the art typed steel arches are pointed out exemplarily. Understanding the complete system permits the selection of the economically optimal support for all conditions.

Background Increasingly complex geological conditions, with the presence of high ash binders in the mining horizon were encountered at the A.C. I. Dugout Mine near Price, Utah. This led to the production of high ash coal from the Dugout Mine during 2003 and 2004. This material had poor marketability and posed operating issues for the utilities burning the coal. Ash levels increased from typical levels in the 9-12% range to between 15 and 25%. etween 15 and 25%. Reviews of the mine plan and expected geological conditions indicated that further periods of high ash production could be expected. Action Plan Detailed sampling of the mine high ash production was carried out. The majority of the coal from the Dugout Mine is trucked to the Savage Coal Terminal (SCT) at Wellington, Utah where it is stored in multiple piles by quality. Coal at the mine is segregated by a CoalScan 2600, on-line analyzer into high ash, low ash and rock chute (waste material). From these piles, the material is crushed prior to shipment to SCT. The samples obtained from the various high ash piles were subjected to detailed sizing and washability analysis. Once this information was obtained, alternative circuit configurations were evaluated to process this material into a salable product. Water supplies in the arid terrain where the plant is located are scarce. This factor played a part in the final circuit design.

Industrial grinding machines used in the mineral processing industries are mostly of the tumbling mill type. These mills exist in various types: ball, rod, pebble, autogenous, and semi-autogenous. Balls and rods are traditionally media shapes used in the tumbling mills. In resent years, as an alternative to balls, grinding charges with various shapes are being used. Cylpebs are slightly tapered cylindrical grinding charges with length equaling diameter, and all the edges being radiused. Cylpebs of equal diameter and length have 50% greater surface area and 45% greater weight than balls of the same material. In addition, they have 9% higher bulk density than steel balls, or 12% higher bulk density than cast balls. An important advantage of cylpebs over balls is that cylpebs produce narrower granulometric distribution due to their shapes. However, some discrepancies were found in the literature regarding the milling performance of cylpebs in comparison with balls (Chi, 2004). In recent studies, Chi (2004) has provided detailed information on cylpebs and has compared these to balls in relation to media mass, size distribution, surface area, and input specific energy. Ipek (2006) has investigated the effects of cylpebs and balls with equal mass and surface area on the breakage rate of quartz, using cylpebs and balls separately. Similarly, Lameck and Moys (2006) have investigated the effects of balls and worn balls on breakage rate of material using worn balls as grinding environment. However, no study has attempted to investigate the effects of grinding environment other than balls on the brekage distribution. As indicated by Prasher (1987), the breakage distribution function is independent of the following variables in ball mills: hold-up (Mika et al., 1967; Kelsall et al. 1969), mill speed and ball load (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1972), media load and ball density (Kelsall et al., 1973), mill diameter (Malghan and Fuerstenau, 1976), and powder charge (Shoji et al. 1980). The aim of the present paper is to compare the effects of cylpebs and balls on the breakage distribution function of quartz with respect to same mass and same surface area. BACKGROUND Comminution as a rate process is called kinetic approach. Studies on the kinetic approach are reviewed by Oner (2001). Oner states that grinding kinetics are based on studies by Kolmogorov in 1941 and that Robert (1950) is the first to suggest this approach. Later, Melzak, Loeveday, and Reid have improved the grinding kinetics equation; and, Austin and Lynch have conducted two basic studies on the analytical solutions of these equations. Considering the results of studies comparing the size reduction mechanisms, it has been accepted that breakage constitutes of two operations. These two basic operations, first defined by Epstein (1948), are those of selection of material for breakage and the distribution of breakage material to particle sizes smaller than the initial size (Lynch, 1977). Epstein defined the two operations as: ? Pn(y), the probability of breakage of a particle size in the nth step of the breakage process. ? F(x,y), the cumulative distributions by weight of particles of size x<y arising from the breakage of a unit mass of a size y. Probability of breakage is called a selection or a breakage-rate function (Si). Characteristics size distribution after breakage is called a breakage distribution or appearance function (Bi,j). Due to the difficulties in representing particle size distributions mathematically and constantly, the batch equation based on particle size fraction is suggested. Thus, as is the case in breakage distribution and specific rate of breakage, the breakage parameters were defined by batch grinding experiments conducted in laboratories (Oner, 2001). When effective breakage occurs in the mill, the breakage of material with single feed size fraction usually fits first order grinding kinetics and the specific rate of breakage values can be calculated through the slope of semi-log plot. The values of the breakage distributions are deduced from the size distributions at short grinding times where there is mainly size 1 material breaking and only small amount of smaller sizes to rebreak (Austin et. al., 1984). B values can be calculated by using BII. [ ] where j is the top size of the charge, Pi(t) is the cumulative percent undersize of i th size interval at the short grinding time which gives no more than about 30% broken out of the top size interval. Cumulative primary breakage distribution, Bi,j, is also defined in an empirical form by [ ] where xi is the top size and Bi,j is the weight fraction of primary breakage products. The parameters F, ? and ß define the size distribution of the material being ground. On plotting size versus Bi,j on log scale, the slope of the lower portion of the curve gives the value of ?, the slope of the upper portion of the curve gives the value of ß, and F is the intercept as in Fig.1. In a companion paper on current hedging practices in the mining industry (Armstrong et al, 2009) we showed that contrary to popular belief, mining groups are still using financial derivatives to hedge against foreign exchange risk and interest rate risk, and more recently against adverse changes in energy prices, notably the oil price. This paper presents a case study on a hypothetical gold mine to illustrate the impact that hedging policies could have on its profitability by reducing the downside risk due to adverse changes in the exchange rate and increases in fuel prices. The characteristics of the hypothetical mine have been set to reproduce those of a real gold deposit, the Kisladag mine that is currently being exploited by open pit methods in Turkey. This mine was selected because its feasibility study was available to the public. Geostatistical simulations are used to reproduce the inherent uncertainty on the recoverable reserves û stochastic simulations are used to generate the variability of the other three key sources of uncertainty: the gold price, the cost of energy and the exchange rate. A simple strategy based on straightforward vanilla options (puts and calls) was developed for hedging the last two risks, on the assumption that the company sells its production at the prevailing spot price.

Results obtained from small scale tests using Australian tin concentrates indicate that metallic tin containing less than 0&#183;1 per cent iron can be recovered by a two-stage process using hydrogen and make-up chlorine. In the first stage the concentrate is ground,. pelletized, roasted, and reacted at 650&#176;C with HCI and H2 to volatilize the tin as SnOI2. The volatilization reaction is conducted with cocurrent gas and solids flow because it was found that the use of cocurrent flow yielded a solids residue substantially free from FeCI2. The second stage uses a technique termed &quot;reflux reduction&quot; during which the SnOl2 produced by volatilization is reduced by hydrogen to form tin and a gas containing HCI and H2 of sufficiently high HCI tenor for recycle to the volatilization stage. The elimination of tin ranged from 98+ to 99&#183;7+ per cent of the tin from concentrates containing 5 to 50 per cent tin, respectively. The process should be capable of continuous operation, and a tentative calculation has shown ,that a treatment rate of 12,000 tonnes of tin concentrate per year could be obtained in a volatilization reactor 1&#183;1 m in diameter and 6&#183;1 m high. The process may have particular application to finely divided concentrates containing less than 20 per cent tin.

A.) : In congratulating Mr. Hooker upon his resume of Mr Parry&apos;s paper I have in mind the fact that he carried out the research into pipe pressures. Hydraulic filling as practised in Kalgoorlie has created world wide interest, with these pressures and percolation being vital points.Early in the 1950s, representatives of the Kolar field were conduGted over the local mines where stopes at depths below 2,000 ft were being filled. The problems of pipe pressures were their main consideration since depths of up to 10,000 ft were envisaged.Mr Krishnaiah and Mr Murthy from the same field are with us today and perhaps we may hear of their experiences with depths of 6,000 ft and long lateral lines.J. ACCORDING to our office dictionary, geology is "the science that investigates the structure of the earth and its successive physical changes", and a geologist is "one who knows the science of the structure of the earth". No doubt this definition does not suit all of us. Another dictionary would have the definition slightly different. As an example, one dictionary stated that "a geologist is one who practices geology". (Some of our clients told us to quit practising and get to work). There are many different types of geologists engaged in various branches of the profession and some of these are further broken down into subdivisions so that specialization is becoming more and more prevalent. As a result it is, in some cases, doubtful whether or not we are actually dealing with a geologist in the generally accepted sense of the term.

This work investigates the effect of waste plastics addition on the reduction of iron oxide by sawdust. Composite pellets of iron oxide containing sawdust (SD), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and blends of SD/HDPE were fired under argon in a horizontal tube furnace at temperatures between 1300 and 1500 °C. Reduced samples were weighed after 10 minutes of reduction and the extent of reduction was calculated from the measured oxygen contents of the compact. The results showed improved extent of reduction when SD was blended with HDPE. The highest extent of reduction was achieved at SD:HDPE ratio of 2:3.

Amsterdam City Council is building a new metro line, the North–South Line. The line passes under Amsterdam Central Station (a listed building) about 18m below street level. The retaining wall that has to be built underneath the existing building is an innovative construction consisting of two rows of steel piles interspersed with a solid mass of overlapping jet grout columns: a composite ‘sandwich’ wall. This paper gives an overview of the approach taken to designing (computational models) and building the retaining wall. Special attention is paid to the observational method used for the construction of the jet grout columns.

The plants are fed for Chromite ore through the captive mines namely Nuasahi Chromite mines (40.47 Ha) , Bangur Chromite mines(37.34Ha), Sukinda chromite mines (116.76 Ha), Mahagiri Chromite Mine(73.777 Ha) and Chingudipal Chromite mines (26.62 Ha). Nuasahi Chromite Mine, which is situated in Keonjhar district, is an underground mine and is based upon best technological advancements in the industry. The underground mining operation is certified under ISO-9002, ISO-14001and OHSAS 18001. This not only shows the concern for the quality, environment but also for the health of the employees. The Nuashahi is the first chromite mine to backfill the opencast excavations created during the last 50 years and carry out the production from underground area below the opencast workings. This paper deals with the state of art technology of sub-level open stopping in thin ore bodies. The under-ground mine openings was started in the year 1997. In next four years the production of chromite from underground was started.(2001). At present the mine is in a good shape with several running stopes. Today it is producing around 10,000 Mt per month of chromite. The development of the mine is carried out with an average of 200 mtr per month of tunneling. The mine is having a mechanical ventilator having a capacity of24000 M3 per hour at 50mm water gauge, thus feeding sufficient air for the persons working in underground. The mine is being dewatered through a most modern positive suction sump, having a capacity of 500 cum and operated with 120 HP pumps. After commissioning of this sump in the year 2003, the mine has taken a quantum jump in production with remarkable saving in power consumption.

A novel separation process for detoxifying cadmium-containing residues arising from zinc hydrometallurgical processes has been developed. An initial investigation indicated that a high concentration of zinc in the sulfate solution can be effectively separated from cadmium by solvent extraction with P204 (di(2-ethylhexly)phosphoric acid, D2EHPA). The mixture of sulfuric acid and ammonium citrate ((NH4)3C6H5O7) is thus used to extract metals from the residue at room temperature. Copper in the leachate is recovered by solvent extraction (SX) with LIX 973. Cobalt in the raffinate from the copper SX process is recovered by precipitation with a-nitroso-ß-naphthol. The results show that more than 50% of the copper and virtually all the zinc, cadmium and cobalt in the residue can be leached under the experimental conditions used here. Virtually all dissolved copper and cobalt can be recovered in the subsequent solvent extraction and precipitation processes. The presence of (NH4)3C6H5O7 could significantly facilitate the extraction of zinc by D2EHPA in the subsequent separation of zinc and cadmium. More than 97% of the dissolved zinc can be recovered through a two-stage counter current solvent extraction process. After separating copper, cobalt and zinc, cadmium can easily be recovered from the solution either by cementation with zinc powder or by electrowinning, while the purified solution can be recycled back to the leaching process.
