Coal refuse slurries stored in tailings impoundments can potentially lead to environmental concerns such as effluent seepage, property devaluation, and in extreme cases, dam failures. Pressure filtration offers an opportunity to reduce the impoundment requirements by providing significantly drier solids. A full-factorial design was used to study the effects of temperature and pH on dewatering a refuse slurry obtained from a coal preparation facility in Pennsylvania, USA. The experimental results indicated a strong effect of temperature on cake moisture as the cake moisture after about 2800 s was 22% at 43 °C and only 36% at 10 °C for tests conducted at pH 3. ANOVA results confirmed the statistical significance of pH, temperature, and their interaction effect. Also, the results showed no significant differences between the tests conducted near neutral and alkaline pH values at low and ambient temperatures. On the other hand, Tukey's test indicated higher reductions in cake moisture at higher temperatures for lower pH values. This study affirms the need to monitor and control the pressure filtration process as throughput could significantly vary with changes in temperature and slurry conditions.

Introduction More and more women engineers are joining the traditionally male mining industry. Are they successful? Do they encounter special problems? How do men in mining respond? How can the mining industry effectively use its female resources? What contributes to the success of a woman in mining? What can male engineers do to ease the entry of female professionals into the workforce? An STM survey conducted last spring provided some answers to these questions. All BS graduates in mining, mineral engineering, and extractive metallurgy from 1960-1979 were surveyed. Nearly 60% of the female graduates, from 17 universities, completed questionnaires. The women were asked why they chose mining, how they relate to predominantly male co-workers, what job skills they have gained, and what areas of work they most enjoy. They were also asked how problems of a two-career family are solved. Data were gathered on salaries, titles, specialties, and products handled. Respondents, assured of confidentiality, are identified only by title. Many male mining executives were also questioned for their advice to women in mining. Profile of the Survey Participant The "typical" female mining engineer works with coal, is employed by an operating company, feels she works very hard to prove her abilities, does not want to be treated as an anomaly, and someday wants to be an independent consultant. Of the respondents, 44% listed coal as the most familiar product, 12% said copper, and the rest listed products from industrial chemicals to oil. Titles varied widely but women managers are rarely found. However, the majority of the survey population graduated after 1976 and thus lacks substantial experience. Of 102 female graduates, only 25 graduated before 1977. Since then, there has been a steady increase. The American Association of Engineering Societies reported that in 1980 more than 100 degrees were awarded to women in minerals engineering. Education Highly Valued Twenty-two percent of the women surveyed had graduate degrees, 38% planned further education, and 12% listed a PhD as their goal. The majority of graduate degrees are in technical fields. There were only two MBAs. Five women intended to pursue law degrees, and one woman, with a mining engineering degree and an MBA, is a part-time law student. Along with advanced education, the women agree that production experience is needed for career advancement. However, only 28% of the women have worked in production. Many women, especially younger grads, commented that these are the toughest jobs to get. This is a universal complaint, from males as well as females, though women seem to encounter more opposition. Several women mentioned they were small or slight of build and managers tended to shy away from hiring them for production jobs. Two-Career Marriages The most difficult problem for two-career couples is relocation. Whose career takes priority? Fifty percent of the women said transfers or offers would be examined on a case-by-case basis, weighing pros and cons for both parties. The husband's career took priority with 47% of the women; their own careers, with 3%. These statistics conflict with comments from two employee relations managers. Both said most female engineers they've encountered are married to men who follow their wives' careers. Seventy per cent of the married respondents said their husbands were also engineers. Four said their husbands were engineers at the same company. Some male and female engineers met on the job; others joined the company as a "package deal." Both partners being engineers can ease relocation problems, since an area or company offering one spouse a job can often provide a spot for the other. A company may benefit by getting two new hires for the relocation costs of one. Most companies contacted have policies that allow married couples to work at the same division, but discouraged them from working in the same department. With 40% of today's marriages ending in divorce, one risk is that one or both parties may quit. One personnel executive said there were several couples, each spouse in a different discipline, who were work¬ing out very well at his division. However, he recognized the potential for problems if, for instance, one gets promoted and the other doesn't, or salary increases are unequal. The personnel executive said he has actively recruited married couples, and would again, were each person competent.

Recent accidents in the United States underground Coal Mines and the on-going carnage in Underground Chinese Coal Mines has shown the danger associated with the lack of communication infrastructures in an underground environment. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) have introduced legislation that states all Underground Coal Mines must have two-way voice and personnel tracking capabilities by 2009. If Coal Mining companies are being forced to deal with this problem Tunneling Companies will not be far behind. This paper will examine current practices and best case technology to deal with these issues.

Author's Note: Since the paper on "All-Flotation at North Broken Hill Limited" was read and discussed, the metallurgical results obtained have conclusively justified the adoption of the All-Flotation treatment.At present the shipping grades of lead concentrate produced from North mine ore range between 74% and 75% Pb, carrying approximately 43 oz. Ag and 4.5%-5% Zn. The lead recovery in lead concentrate is recording 95%-96% of the lead content of crude ore, and the milling and treatment cost on 6400 tons crude ore perweek of 96 hours has dropped to 6s. 3.6d. per ton on ore. With an increased ore tonnage, and with a new mill, considerable further reduction in costs is certain.New flotation machines, with 30 in. vertical depth of overflow (instead of 42 in. depth), are now being tried for the secondary granular treatment, with advantageous results. The treatment to-day is practically the same as that outlined in the paper, excepting that additional concentrate is returned for retreatment in the existing units.(Signed) A. LOWRY.Mr. T. A. This chapter presents proportionate mortality ratios (PMRs) derived from death certificate data in the National Occupational Mortality Surveillance (NOMS) database for the years 1986 through 1993. At the time this report was prepared, 1993 was the latest year for which data were available. Industry is classified under the 1980 U.S. Bureau of the Census classification system [Bureau of the Census 1982]; cause of death, under the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) [World Health Organization 1977]. A PMR of 100 indicates a mortality risk for a particular industry group that is similar to that for all industry groups combined. A PMR over 100 suggests a higher risk; a PMR under 100 suggests a lower risk. PMRs are subject to many factors that affect their reliability and validity and may not be comparable across populations with very different causes of death. An elevated PMR for a specified cause of death among an occupational or industry group may indicate a relationship between a work exposure and the cause of death specified. However, there are many limitations of PMRs as a measure of risk; they are most useful for generating hypotheses about exposure-disease relationships, which can then be tested in other studies. Selected PMRs are presented separately for males and females for coal mining, metal mining, nonmetallic mineral mining and quarrying (which includes nonmetal, stone, and sand and gravel), and for oil and gas extraction. All PMRs have been adjusted for age and race. In general, PMRs are presented only if the lower 95% confidence limit exceeded 100. If a PMR in an ICD-9 subcategory was above 100, however, the PMR for the larger category into which the subcategory falls is always presented and may be less than 100. PMRs can be expected to be elevated for conditions that have a high prevalence in particular occupational groups. PMRs showed elevated values for conditions known to affect miners, such as coal workers' pneumoconiosis, pneumoconiosis due to silica, tuberculosis, chronic pulmonary heart disease, and injuries. Additional findings of interest were- • An elevated PMR for myocardial infarction among male coal miners (table 2-1); • Elevated PMRs for neurologic disease in general and anterior horn cell disease, in particular among male metal miners (table 2-3); • An elevated PMR for rheumatic heart disease in male metal miners (table 2-3); • Elevated PMRs for malignant neoplasms of the digestive organs and peritoneum and for malignant neoplasms of the colon and rectum in female nonmetal miners (table 2-6); and • Elevated PMRs for non-A, non-B hepatitis and arteriosclerotic heart disease among male oil and gas workers (table 2-7).

Conventional ground support in accordance with latest state-of-the-art considers proper preparation of geotechnical investigation, structural design, observation during construction and fair risk sharing documents. Depending on the ground, there are different means and methods, reflecting different experiences. The paper is presenting ground support concepts, as mostly used in Europe during the past three decades. It discusses the use of anchors as well as the use of steel arches respectively combinations. It also discusses different applications of plain shotcrete, respectively fibre reinforced shotcrete. As excavation sequence is a major input to create the ground arch, the paper discusses also criteria to create closed ring conditions. Finally deformation criteria will be presented with case histories in order to control stability of the structure.

Demand for construction raw materials depends on investment in housing, other buildings and infrastructure. The provision of these materials requires early knowledge of future trends in construction investment. By using scenarios possible future developments and bandwidths can be explored. Policy makers in government organisations as well as in the private sector can base their policy decisions upon these insights. In this paper we discuss the case of sand and gravel in the Netherlands. We will show that, depending on the future role of government and the degree of internationalisation, the long term demand for construction raw materials will strongly diverge. Nevertheless there are some common developments such as a decreasing population growth, a smaller share of the labour force in total population and a growing wealth. In different scenarios we will encounter different conditions for minerals provision and for sustainable development.

Jointed micropiles were investigated to support bridge foundations where shallow rock was present. In this application, micropiles would have some amount of unsupported length, and would be subject to nominal lateral loads. Five lateral load tests were conducted on micropiles to demonstrate the impact of casing joints and rock socket embedment on lateral behavior. Load tests were simulated with FB-Multipier, a hybrid-finite element program for analysis of deep foundations, for proper design of the loading apparatus and instrumentation. The micropile sections were 2 m (6.56 ft) long, 273 mm (10.75 in) in diameter, 13 mm (0.5 in) thick walled, with a 50-mm (2-in) long threaded joint. Micropiles were made of one to three casing sections and were embedded 0.3, 0.6, 1.5, or 3.0 m (1, 2, 5, or 10 ft) into rock. In each test, two identical micropiles were pulled together using a simple frame until the weaker pile failed. All micropiles were instrumented with inclinometer casings while two contained strain gages at 0.76 m (2.5 ft) intervals. Load and displacement were measured at the pile heads. Tests showed the embedment of 0.6 m, 1.5 m, and 3.0 m (2 ft, 5 ft and 10 ft) sufficiently carried lateral loads over 180 kN (20 tons). The piles embedded 0.3 m (1 ft) were not able to maintain lateral load. In general, all micropiles tested to failure exhibited a brittle failure mode where there is small lateral deflection followed by a sudden failure at the casing joint. This was demonstrated in three of the load tests. In most cases, the micropiles were stiffer and stronger in the load tests than originally predicted numerically. The final test, where piles were not loaded to failure, verified that embedding vibrating wire rebar strain meters in the grout captured the bending moment profile of the micropile. The results showed the maximum moment in this case being carried directly across the threaded joint as predicted by the preliminary models. The results of these tests were used to calibrate the FB-Multipier numerical model. Using a load test that included bending strain measurements for a match, the soil properties were adjusted to produce reasonable matches for all of the load tests.

"The environmental impact of the Rabbit Lake project is presented. Baseline data for fish, water, air and radon collected in 1973, 1975, 1980and 1986, are compared with post-development environmental monitoring data. Predicted environmental impacts for the developed Rabbit Lake and B-zone deposits are compared to the actual impacts. INTRODUCTIONThe environmental impact of the Rabbit Lake project has been documented through the years in several submissions to the government agencies. In 1972, the environmental baseline study for the Rabbit Lake area was completed prior to any mining activity at the Rabbit Lake pit (Fig. 1).Sampling concentrated on Hidden Bay and Pow Bay, which received the treated effluent and the waters drained from Rabbit Lake respectively.A second baseline study was done on the Collins Bay area in 1980(Fig. I) in preparation for the mining of the B-zone pit. The detail in this study was considerably greater than the detail in the previous study. Collins Bay and Harrison Peninsula were the areas sampled. The B-zone deposit is being mined at present.With the discovery of the A-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point deposits, it was decided in 1986 to begin proceedings to obtain approval from Saskatchewan's Department of the Environment, and from the Atomic Energy Control Board to develop these deposits.In preparation, a third baseline study of both the Rabbit Lake and Collins Bay areas was done in 1986 and 1987. The emphasis was to establish the baseline at the three new deposits, to quantify the actual impacts of the existing Rabbit Lake operations and to confirm the Collins Bay B-zone (1980) impact predictions. The new deposits will allow us to continue to produce uranium into the future. In January 1988, Saskatchewan approval was received.Since 1975 in the Rabbit Lake area and 1980 in the Collins Bay area, routine environmental monitoring has been done. This has resulted in one of the largest and most comprehensive environmental data bases in North America in mining. By the time the Eagle Point deposit is mined to completion, there will have been data collected for approximately 40 years.Further discussions follow which describe the impacts of the past (1972 to 1984), the present (1985 to 1987) and the future. In addition, the past and present performances and the future plans of the .waste management systems will be discussed."

For the realisation of the underground railway line RandstadRail in the city area of Rotterdam a bored tunnel is under construction. Diaphragm walls up to a depth of about 40 m were used to construct the building pits for the start shaft, the Blijdorp Station and the end shaft. The water tightness of the diaphragm walls was determined by leakage tests that were executed after the construction of the walls, but prior to the excavation of the building pits. The tests showed satisfactory results with a hydraulic resistance of the diaphragm walls of at least 500 days. To determine the water tightness of diaphragm walls it is recommended to follow the specific procedure as described in this paper.

"Due to recent coal bursts in Australian coalmines, research of coal bursts has attracted intensive interest from mining researchers and engineers worldwide. Previous research has shown that the sudden drop of fractal dimension may be a precursor of catastrophic failure of rock. This paper examines the fractal characteristics of temporal-spatial distribution of acoustic emission signals released during the compression loading process of coal. This research suggests the possibility of coal burst forecasting based on acoustic emission data. The concept and calculation equation of fractal dimension is introduced in this paper. Additionally, uniaxial compression experiments of Australian coal samples are conducted, and the acoustic emission waveform and 3D location are recorded simultaneously by eight sensors Express-8 AE monitoring equipment in the loading process. The experimental results indicate that the continued slowdown of fractal dimension in time sequence can be used as a precursory signal of coal sample brittle failure. The fractal dimension of the spatial distribution of acoustic emission events decreases with the evolution of coal fracturing.INTRODUCTIONCoal bursts refer to the catastrophic failure of overstressed coal subject to the dynamic and static loads. In recent years, coal bursts have occurred in major coal mining countries and this phenomenon has attracted the research interests of international mining and geotechnical scholars. A total of five coal burst accidents happened in Australian coalmines since 2014. On October 20, 2018, a coal burst occurred at Longyun Coalmine in China’s Shandong province, which led to 21 fatalities. Unfortunately, even after decades of research, it seems neither more accurate forecasting methods nor comprehensive controlling measures put forward by researchers have solved the problems posed by coal bursts.As an instantons energy releasing process, coal bursts are always associated with energy dissipation in the forms of acoustic emission, micro seismicity, and electromagnetic radiation (Yamada, Masuda, and Mizutani, 1989). It is believed by many researchers that the frequency–magnitude relationship of micro seismicity induced by rock failure satisfies Gutenberg-Richer relationship as well (Feng et al., 2017). Hence, based on the principal and theory of earthquake source locating, micro-seismicity monitoring equipment has been adopted in many coalmines to locate seismic event origins associated with coal and rock failure in an attempt to better forecast coal and rock bursts. Although many parameters such as b value (parameter of Gutenberg and Richter’s law) (Lu et al., 2015) have been adopted as indicators of risk, the forecasting of coal bursts is still of low accuracy. The same is true with earthquake prediction, as it remains as a worldwide problem even after decades of research and practice. Acoustic emission (AE) methods are now widely adopted to detect rock failure processes under an applied stress for application predicting the abrupt failure of rock in the laboratory (Li et al., 2017). Previous studies have found that significant overlap exists between research regarding AE and micro seismicity with respect to generation process (both are concerned with the generation and propagation of elastic wave) and event origin location, as geophysical signals of both are same (Lockner, 1993). That is, the frequency–magnitude relationship and early-warning indicators found by AE research in the laboratory have a potential applicability to in-field micro seismic monitoring of coal bursts. Through experimental study, Feng and Seto found that the temporal distribution of acoustic emission counts of rock have distinct fractal structures during load-increase processes (Feng and Seto, 1999). When the United States entered the World War governmental agencies found little definite knowledge available as to the exact capacity of each sulphuric acid plant in the United States to manufacture acid under the stress of a great emergency. It is true that on account of the demand for acid for the manufacture of munitions for the Allies, prior to the entrance of this country into the war, most of the acid plants near industrial centers in the Eastern and Northern States were running at or nearly their maximum capacity, but, . for various reasons, many plants in these States and plants in other districts were not. For a number of years statistics as to the production of acid by the plants of the country were compiled by the United States Geological Survey, but obviously such figures did not give information as to the maximum capacities that might be available for meeting the he.a vy war ·requirements, or as to the steps that would have to be taken to bt-ing these capacities into use. During the summer and early fall of 1917 various attempts were made to obtain the desired information, but no satisfactory or complete data were obtained. Late in 1917, under the authority granted to the Bureau of Mines by the explosives act, the Director of the Bureau of Mines directed A. E. Wells, metallurgist of the bureau, to uiake a complete survey of the situation. Mr. Wells personally conferred with officials of the acid companies and visited most of the acid plants in the North that are east of the Mississippi River. The information obtained through this personal survey, together with that obtained through the ready cooperation of the subcommittee on ncids, and the subcommittee on fertilizers of the Committee on Chemicals of the Council of National Defense, enabled the preparation of a report containing the desired data concerning the sulphuric acid industry. This report was made immediately available to the War Industries Board and to those offices in the War and Navy Depart- ments that were most directly concerned in planning the explosives program and in obtaining the necessary supplies to produce the explosives. Beginning with this survey and report, the sulphuric acid section of the war minerals investigations of the Bureau of Mines took an active part in all matters pertaining to the sulphuric acid industry during the remainder of the war. Mr. Wells, the chief of the section, was appointed an associate chief of the sulphur, pyrite, and sulphuric acid sections of the War Industries Board. .Also, by this direct contact with the War Industries Board, the data obtained by Messrs. R. R. Hornor, H. A. Buehler, a.nd 0. Lindstrom, who were in charge, for the bureau, of the investigations concerning the supplies of pyrite and sulphur, were constantly made available to all interested Government agencies. D. E. Fogg, of New York City, was appointed chemical engineer to the sulphuric acid section to make special investigations relating to the acid industry, especially the possible utilization, in an emergency, of those sources of raw material.not then being used. Mr. E. E. Corbett, of Brooklyn, N. Y., was appointed chemical engineer to make investigations concerned primarily ,vith the conservation of acid. Direct and intimate contact with the industry was had through the close cooperation with the committee on acids of the Chemical Alliance, this committee during the greater part of 1918 occupying rooms with the acid section of the bureau. With the ending of the war and the close o:f the active work of the acid section of the bureau, the suggestion was made by many interested parties that a bulletin be prepared giving some qf the fun. damental and most important facts regarding the sulphuric acid industry, including a discussion of the technical :features of the manufacture of acid. During the war the bureau received -a vast number of inquiries in regard to various phases of the industry, a.nd this fact also made such a bulletin seem desirable. Therefore, the present bulletin was prepared to cover the main facts in regard to the industry in this country, including a discussion of the supplies of sulphur-bearing raw materials, the situation of the acid plants, the principal points in regard to manufacturing processes, and the uses of the acid. No attempt has been ma.de to discuss at length the manufacturing processes, as details differ more or less at the different plants and in general are carefully guarded by the acid ·companies. A great deal of the data given in this bulletin may be found in various pub]ications, but this is the first publication in which such data have been assembled and made readily available. Most of the data were obtained directly from observation and from cooperating acid companies or from individuals who had been or are now engaged in acid manufacturing and were liberal and generous in making their information available for publication. Care has been exercised to publish no data that were obtained as confidential by the bureau's representatives. The average acid manufacturer may be already more or less acquainted with most of the information presented in this bulletin, yet it is believed that the bulletin will be of value to those who wish to obtain a. general review of the present condition, both the economic and technical, of the sulphuric acid industry in the United States.

According to the data provided by the most recent European Survey on Working Conditions, roughly 25 per cent of the European working population is exposed to mechanical vibrations for no less than one quarter of the work shift duration, while around ten per cent are exposed for the entire work shift. The occupational exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV), in particular, represents a major health risk in mining, quarrying and civil excavation activities. In accordance with European Directive 2002/44/EC, the latest version of the Italian law on physical risks has recently confirmed the possibility of using relevant literature data on vibration magnitude in order to evaluate personal occupational exposure (vibration database or data provided by the manufacturer). Still the alternative option, based on field measurements, represents the most appropriated method of risk assessment, as it accounts for the actual operating condition at the workplace; actual operator and vehicle under investigation and specific working cycle. The article discusses the vibration measurements taken on a number of heavy machinery (excavators, loaders, trucks, dumpers, etc) employed for talc extraction in a mine located in Sardinia and the resulting personal exposure for the drivers. The assessment was carried out in accordance with the specifications of ISO 2631-1 and EN 14253.

Equilibrium relation between B2O3 slag, RExOy-B2O3 (RE = rare earths) slag and Fe-C alloy formed by melting treatment of neodymium magnet and B2O3 was investigated. When neodymium magnet was melted together with B2O3 and Fe-C alloy in carbon crucible, 3 liquid phases of B2O3 slag, RExOy-B2O3 slag and molten Fe-C alloy formed and clearly separated by the difference of the specific gravities. In the case that excess amount of Cu was also introduced in that system, molten Cu phase additionally formed. Almost all amount of RE were concentrated in RExOy-B2O3 slag. The concentration of RE in RExOy-B2O3 slag increased with the decrease of the melting temperature. While chromium, phosphorous, nickel, cobalt, and copper were concentrated in molten Fe-C alloy, silicon and aluminum were distributed in B2O3 slag and RE2O3-B2O3 slag.

Spontaneous combustion in underground coal mines has become a serious problem particularly in the caved area (gob). Recent statistic has shown that approximately 17% of total 87 underground coal mine fires in the United States are attributed to spontaneous combustion (De Rosa, 2004). Spontaneous combustion results from a self-heating process in exothermic conditions. The accumulated heat, if not removed, is conducive to the rapid increase of temperature and may result in mine fires or explosions. It is well accepted that the interaction between oxygen and coal substances is the main cause for spontaneous combustion, while other factors such as pyrite, moisture, and bacteria play a secondary role to the self-heating of coal. Therefore, only coal oxidation is considered in this study. Coal oxidation occurs as coal comes into contact with air. This process involves complex phenomena in terms of heat transfer, chemical surface absorption, and energy balance related to inherent properties of coal (Wang et al., 2003). For simulation purpose, overall reactions can be simplified as suggested by Mitchell (1990): C + O2 CO2 + heat [65°- 94°C] (1) CO2 + C 2CO + heat [100°- 150°C] (2) Stoichiometric reactions (1) and (2) show that 2.66 grams of oxygen are required to oxidize 1.0 gram of carbon. Once the temperature exceeds 100°C, the reaction has little chance to stop. The crucial step in reducing spontaneous combustion risk is locating the ignition point of spontaneous combustion (hot spot). This information is useful in the effort of developing a preventive method effectively. In this study, this was conducted based on the best gathered information: ventilation surveys conducted in an existing longwall mine located in the western US; the laboratory experiments performed on a physical gob model; and the CFD models to investigate the flow behavior in the gob, the oxidation of coal, and heat transfer phenomena. The hot spot location is determined as a function of oxygen concentration and gob temperature. The critical values are the following: 5% (by volume) for oxygen and 100°C for gob temperature. CHARACTERISTICS OF GOB MATERIAL AND MODELS Permeability Concept Permeability is one of the key parameters in any study dealing with porous medium. This is determined by particle size and the ratio of void volume to the total volume (porosity) of porous medium. This relationship is known as the Carman-Kozeny equation (Scheidegger, 1957) and is given mathematically as [ ] where k* = theoretical specific permeability, m2 dm = the mean particle size, m n = porosity However, permeability tests with various particle sizes were carried out at the University of Utah?s ventilation model (Figure 1) to verify this relationship. These tests indicated a necessity to modify this theoretical relationship. A factor of 0.898 was obtained to make up the different between theoretical permeability and the experimental one. The modified version of (3) is given by: [ ] This equation is used to determine permeability of the simulated mine gob throughout the study. [ ] Mine Gob Material The gob is represented by zones filled with material of given size distribution. For physical measurements and CFD simulations, the material used were crushed rock and coal. Due to compaction, three different characteristics of gob material were used in the model: unconsolidated, semiconsolidated, and consolidated. In the real condition, the largest coal-rock particles are more likely to be located in the area behind the shields. This material is freshly broken and unconsolidated. The size of these broken particles is based on a study carried out by analyzing images taken from the area behind the shields in three coal mines in the United States (Pappas and Mark, 1993). The results have shown that the mean size of materials behind the shields is about 1.22 m. The permeability associated with this size was then obtained from (4) and permeability tests. This was 4.68 x10-7 m2. For semiconsolidated and consolidated zones, due to the lack of experimental data, these were determined through CFD simulations. These simulations were designed by assigning a permeability of 3.15 x 10-8 m2 for consolidated zone and 7.98 x 10-9 m2 to the other zone. The airflow pattern in the gob assigned with given permeabilities was expected to follow the experimental distribution (Brunner, 1985). The mean particle sizes for the semi-consolidated and consolidated zones were 0.02 and 0.006 m, respectively; smaller than those of the unconsolidated zone. The rotary drilling of rocks is widespread technology in mining and in tunnelling. The paper describes the results of research by aim to find relationships between optimal drilling and sound signal of drilling machine. The optimisation criterion has been formulated as the minimisation of specific energy with maximal effective speed of drilling in process of the rock disintegration. The research in this field has been made on experimental drilling stand. Our monitoring system has measured following variables: the pressing force of core drill, the revolutions of drilling head, the length of drilling, the time, the power, and the acoustic signals. For measurement of acoustic signals have been used very sensitively sound meter MEDIATOR 2238. From this measurements have been processed acoustic spectrums. Then we are found relationships between optimal control of drilling and composition of acoustic spectrum. On base of experimental results, we can formulate the optimal control following: æTo achieve the minimum difference between the equivalent sound level at the load and idle modes only at the representative frequency (f = 1000 Hz)Æ. The representative frequency dependences on type of the rock New method based on these relationships enables the optimal control of drilling machine by using measured acoustic signals only.

Mining heritage can be of outstanding value for many regions around the world, because mining has been done for thousands of years for the benefit of mankind and its development. This paper presents an ongoing project creating a general guideline for the handling of mining heritage on the basis of experiences made in Germany. Interactions of stakeholders in the ?heritage network? as well as strategies for the technical proceeding will be described. An action plan for the sustainable handling of mining heritage has already been developed in part, which includes necessary measures. Best-practice recommendations will be derived. Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonites to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath, 1986 and personal communication). These bentonites typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X¬ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content.
