On Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea, Bougainville Copper Ltd. (BCL) has successfully applied electronic data processing (EDP) techniques to pit operations and mine planning. Though the EDP program is not complete, BCL has realized significant improvements in short and long range mine planning, and equipment and manpower utilization. About 80% of BCL's 4000 employees are Papua New Guinea nationals, and most have little education or training. The operational characteristics of the computer equipment, however, have been quickly adapted by users with low educational standards.

An extensive series of tests was carried out on a ball mill-rake classifier circuit in the New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. concentrator. The data were used to develop a mathematical model of the operation of a rake classifier and this model has been used in the simulation of the performance of a ball mill-rake classifier circuit on a digital computer. As a result of this simulation it has been possible to develop a technique for the optimization and control of a circuit which includes these units.

The largest reserves of palygorskite in the world are located in Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces in East Central China. The deposits are Middle Miocene in age and range from 3 to 6 m in thickness. The deposits are the alteration product of basaltic volcanic ash. The Chinese Geological Survey estimates the palygorskite reserves are in excess of 200 million tons. The elongate particle shape results in unique colloidal properties. Large quantities are exported to Japan, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, Australia, and West and Gulf Coasts of the United States. The markets include agricultural carriers, paint, joint tape compounds, animal feed binders, catalyst support, drilling muds, and suspending agents for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and medicines. The viscosity is high and the quartz content is generally 5% or less.

"Vanadium and uranium occur widely distributed throughout western Colorado and eastern Utah, and a few deposits have been found in northeastern Arizona and northwestern. New Mexico. The area in which it occurs includes approximately 10,000 square miles and is generally referred to as the vanadium region of Colorado and Utah.The majority of the deposits consist of replacement bodies and impregnations of rare minerals in the lower Morrison formation of Jurassic age. The ore bodies are flat, with irregular margins, and most of them conform to the stratification.The ""rim rock"" topography of the region includes many steep-walled canyons and plateaus, which afford an abundance of outcrops that have been responsible for most of the discoveries of mineralized areas. Delimitation of ore bodies within the areas is accomplished most effectively by core drilling from the surface.The deposits were discovered in 1899 and from 1911 to 1923 wore worked extensively for radioactive uranium ores, principally carnotite.The discovery and marketing of the richer and more cheaply mined pitch-blende ores of the Belgian Congo left the Colorado-Utah deposits without economic importance as sources of radium and uranium, and the region became inactive in 1923. After a period of comparative inactivity, the rising demand of the alloy-steel industry for vanadium renewed interest in the deposits, which were known to contain that metal. By 1938, vanadium production in the area had achieved respectable proportions, and new impetus was given to it by the United States’ entry into World War II in December 1941. In 1942, new treatment plants for vanadium ores were completed in Monticello, Utah, and Durango, Colo. In order to meet the requirements of these and other plants in the region, it became necessary to open new vanadium mines and prepare old onus for production.In an effort to stimulate mining, the Metals Reserve Company initiated a stock-piling program and appointed the united states Vanadium Corporation, to act as its purchasing agent.The extra production was expected to come largely from small, independent operators whose limited funds did not permit them to maintain development and exploratory programs. Study of conditions made it apparent that extensive exploration would be necessary to sustain production, and accordingly the Bureau of Mines initiated an exploratory drilling project on a cooperative basis with the Geological Survey. The principal objects of the work were to enlarge the known ore reserves of the area and, if possible, discover new ones. The results have been gratifying in both respects."

The recent paper by Dr. Edwards upon the copper deposits of Australia furnishes a perspective upon that portion of the Commonwealth's mineral deposits which is the more welcome because it has been long overdue. The paper yields in compressed form and in handy arrangement for reference the more relevant data to end of 1938 for all of Australia's important copper deposits 'past"and. present, and for many of the lesser ones. The information supplied 'obviously' has 15een collected' painstakingly and compiled with discrimination.Such published surveys of a national character have been far too few.The Mineral Resources Survey branch of the Department of Supply and Shipping at Canberra has been engaged for several years upon comprehensive compilations of data concerning each of the more important minerals used in industry. Presumably the results will be published after the war. The group will constitute an impressive and valuable series.As yet the work has not been completed, and, for security reasons, much of that which has been finalized is not publicly available. This makes the paper by Dr. Edwards the more timely.In the compilation of data by those not acquainted at first hand with many of the districts involved it is inevitable that, from reading of the literature alone, certain misconceptions will arise relationships become confused; and some of the more recently acquired information unavoidably fail to be taken into account. One need only compare his own impressions of a district, gained from reading the published literature prior to inspection, with the impressions later arrived at following a visit, to realize the difficulties in appraising the various features,in their proper relationships.On the whole, Dr. Edwards has, kept such misinterpretations at a minimum, which is a tribute to the care he must have exercised in analysing the vast fund of data perused. A few errors of statement, mainly concerning, Queensland deposits, have been noted. This paper presents part of the outcomes of the drill and blast optimization project carried out at Kisladag Gold Mine in Turkey. Kisladag Gold Mine is the largest gold mine in Turkey with a low-grade, bulk-tonnage, open pit operation that uses heap leaching for gold recovery. After blasting, the ore is fed to a three-stage crushing circuit which prepares crushed ore approximately -10 mm (0.39 in) for heap leaching. Crusher downtime analysis showed that blocky material and insufficient feed are causing significant downtimes with the primary crusher. This was supported by the fragmentation data collected to date. It was decided to initiate a fragmentation project to understand the variation in the run-of-mine (ROM) size with a view to provide a consistent feed to the crushing circuit. The study includes the analyses of the ore strength and structure, image analysis of the fragmentation pictures acquired from blasts, blast auditing and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) analyses. During this project, over 200 fragmentation pictures were acquired from 47 blasts to optimize ore and waste blasts. Ore strength varies between 30 and 120 MPa and rock quality designation (RQD) ranges between 30 and 100. A site-specific fragmentation model was used to calibrate the fragmentation for blast domains formed. In addition, alternative cases were simulated to achieve blasts designs with consistent ROM fragmentation size distribution. Alternative blast designs that include stemming length and powder factor changes were suggested. Long stemming length, drill cuttings use, free faced blasts, small shot sizes and poor stemming length control were some of the key issues causing coarse fragmentation.

Flotation is used in mining to produce concentrates of copper, gold and several other valuable ores. In 2017, a copper mine near Globe, Arizona improved their rougher cells productivity using technically advanced electro-hydraulic actuators in the flotation process by enabling excellent tank pulp level process stability. The new actuators controlled the dart valve position to allow pulp to leave the cell. Tank cell pulp level can change due to feed and discharge fluctuations from neighboring tanks. When traditional pneumatic actuators are used, they have sluggish response times and overshoot due to the inherent physical property of air being compressible. Electro-hydraulic actuators have the benefit of hydraulic stiffness to deliver accurate and repeatable (0.1%) dart valve positioning. The froth layer has more opportunity time to maximize mass transfer into the launderer. The results are an increase in copper recovery by 2-4%. INTRODUCTION In 2013 there was an international flotation technical conference well attended by respected flotation specialists for both mining companies and academia. During the technical session a leading metallurgist was discussing pulp level measurement and said that when he was on the cell deck he stated, pneumatic actuators air cylinders stroking up and down. The presenter then claimed with confidence that "I listened to actuator move so the pulp level in the tank was being controlled!" No one questioned his assumption and I can assert that the audience was quite technical and not shy in their critiques of speakers. The flotation community simply believed that the existing pneumatic technology was enough with no alternative. Having a stable flotation cell pulp level is critical to effective copper recovery. Controlling pulp levels in flotation cells is a complex task that includes modulating dart valves in each cell. The use of REXA Electraulic actuators will decrease the process dead time and maintain froth height in a controlled manner, especially from pulp slurry volume fluctuations from neighboring cells. By reducing flotation cell pulp level tank height variation, a copper mine in Arizona has realized a 2-4% recovery improvement by increasing the froth transfer to the launderers in the rougher cell circuits compared to pneumatic actuators. This paper examines the benefits of using an electro-hydraulic actuator to ensure proper pulp level control and reduce the process operational cost. It will focus on actuator positioning the dart valves to maintain pulp level setpoint at a copper mine in Arizona.

This report by the Bureau of Mines is the first of two proposed papers on evaluation of spectrophotometric, spectrographic, polarographic, and other analytical methods for quantitatively determining impurities in high-purity tungsten. Some of the methods described are standard methods that have been successfully applied to determine low-level impurities, several are modifications of known methods, and some procedures are entirely original. The Bureau of Mines is actively engaged in tungsten research because tungsten has an extremely high melting point, in fact the highest of any known metal. The metallurgist must know the content of impurities in tungsten because of the marked effects even micro amounts of impurity elements have on its physical properties. The Bureau procured a number of analyzed samples of above-average purity from research laboratories of companies engaged in production and fabrication of tungsten. These samples were investigated by the analytical procedures of those companies for several metallic impurities. Subsequent analytical laboratory determination of impurities in these samples agreed with the analyses as reported. With this assurance that analytical methods were basically accurate for metallic impurities, procedures for the determination of several of these elements were modified to lower the limits of detection and increase the sensitivity of methods. Carbon and the gases hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen were determined by standard instrumental methods, modified to provide greater sensitivity for reliable determinations when content of these elements was low. After the reliability of the modified procedures was affirmed, they were used as a product evaluation guide in the development of a vapor-plating technique for the production of high-purity tungsten. The following list of elements can be determined by one or more of these methods: AI, B, Be, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, S1, Sn, Ti, V, and Zn. In addition, a vacuum-fusion method for the determination of H, N, and 0, and a conductometric method for carbon are described. Lower limits of determination and detection for each element listed are given.

During recent years there has been a marked increase in the use of explosives in Queensland coal mines. Delay detonators have been introduced and their use has extended with the wider application of mechanised methods of mining.The need for careful study of the characteristics of delay detonators is stressed so that the advantages of simultaneous firing, from the points of view of safety and efficiency, may be obtained. With their use new potential hazards are introduced. These hazardsare considered and means whereby the overall safety may be improved are discussed.The increase in the number of misfires since the introduction of delay detonators is shown and the examination of misfired detonators is described. Lessons to be learned! from these misfires are noted and details are given of the essential requirements for safe and efficient blasting using delay detonators.INTRonUCTIONOne of the aims of mechanization in coal mines is to reduce the physical effort applied to the winning of coal. Explosives play an important part in achieving this and, following the introduction of power borers for the drilling of shot-holes in Queensland coal mines, much of the arduous work associated with coal getting has been eased. During recent years there has been a marked increase in the consumption of explosives, as shown in Table 1, and it must be the aim of all to use these explosives safely and efficiently. Selection of the best possible truck type (model) is of crucial importance for the mine decision-makers. In this paper, authors contribute to the body of knowledge by developing a novel methodology for the selection of mining truck. Both the Coefficient of Technical Level (CTL) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods were used in this study. The CTL represents a mathematical function which takes into consideration the interrelations among the main technical parameters of mining trucks. The authors developed a hierarchical structure where both attribute categories and their importance, i.e. priority or weight in the selection process were determined. For each category, a number of sub-attributes and their priorities were assigned, and a pairwise comparison among them was performed using the AHP method. In the final part of the study, the CTL was integrated into the AHP and represents a holistic approach in the selection of mining trucks. A case study on 180 tonnes truck category offered by five manufacturers was carried out. A sensitivity study of obtained results was also performed indicating a very stable solution. The methodology presented in this paper may be used by mining operators to help in the selection of a specific type when acquiring a new truck. It may also be used by equipment manufacturers to help in analysis of potential benefits of envisaged modifications concerning an existing truck type and/or development of a new type.

When the United States Geological Survey began operations at the coal-testing plant erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, it had already outlined a comprehensive plan for the systematic study of coals, lignites, and other mineral fuels with reference to their suitability for particular purposes and the methods by which they could be utilized most efficiently. Recognizing the need of information on the relative economy of producer gas as compared with steam for power purposes and the lack of comparable tests of American coals in the gas producer, the Geological Survey undertook investigations of the merits of different coals as producer fuel for the purpose of promoting efficiency in the utilization of the nation's fuel supplies. These investigations were carried on at St. Louis, Mo., and, later, at Norfolk, Va., and Pittsburg, Pa. The aet of Congress approved May 16, 1910, transferred the fueltesting work being carried on by the Geological Survey to the Bureau of Mines. This bureau is conducting producer-gas tests at P~ttsburg, Pa., and is publishing and distributing reports relating to all the fuel tests made by the Survey. These investigations into the possibility of generating producer gas in a commercial way for power purposes from the various fuels of the country have been associated with steaming, briquetting, coking, and other tests, all of which supplemented an examination into the nature, extent, and distribution of the fuels. The tests have all been made with carefully selected representative samples and carload lots of materials procured specially for the purpose by experienced collectors.

The Empire concentrator was built in four stages, with the latest stage accounting for 50% of the overall plant capacity. Over the past 5 years, the average throughput of the three grinding lines has decreased by 50 LTPH (15%) without significant changes in ore characteristics and despite the addition of secondary grinding capacity to supplement the existing pebble mills that are the constraint of the grinding circuit. This paper discusses the different areas under study that are aimed at optimizing grinding circuit utilization which includes improving system logic, pebble crushing operation and pebble mills operation.

Recently discovered Carboniferous bentonites are variable in charadeI and thickness, but being altered aeolian, ash-fall tuffs, they are probably extensive. Most are the Ca-montmorillonite type without the natural swelling characteristics of the Wyoming deposits, but their situation, thickness, and response to beneficiation through cation exchange may give them some potential as sources of future economic deposits.INTRODUCTIONLoughnan and See (1959) gave an account of bentonites and fuller's earth deposits of New South Wales. The most likely potential industrial sources were those occurring in the uppermost formations of the Newcastle and Singleton Coal Measures (Permian) in the Hunter Valley and deposited during epochs not marked by strong contemporary vulcanicity.One feature of the record of known occurrences at that time was the absence of bentonites from the thick volcanic sequences of the Carboniferous, but since this paper appeared, many bentonite beds have been discovered by the writer in the Carboniferous facies formerly known as the "Kuttung Series".The purpose of this contribution is to report briefly on the occurrence, genesis, mineralogy, and economic potential of these deposits which augment possible sources of bentonite near major industrial centres on the eastern seaboard.The potential world demand for bentonite would increase markedly with the trend to pelletization in the steel industry, if its use in this field became more general. A seismic monitoring network has been installed in western Colorado (USA) in the vicinity of three underground coal mines to (i) distinguish and characterize seismic activity as either mining related or naturally occurring, (ii) implement a real-time event monitoring and notification tool, and (iii) collect data for use in research studies aimed at quantifying impacts from mining-related and natural seismicity. These potential impacts include dynamic rock mass failures such as coal bumps as well as strong shaking in the vicinity of critical structures such as impoundment dams, reservoirs, mine seals, mine openings, and steep slopes. Examples of two damaging seismic events are presented and the mining and geologic factors attending these dynamic failures are described.

In this study, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller based on an improved disturbance observer is designed for control of the ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill grinding circuit has vast applications in the mining, metallurgy, chemistry, pharmacy, and research laboratories; however, this system has some challenges. The grinding circuit is a multivariable system in which the high interaction between loops, the variation of the system parameters with time, and time delay are some of the problems that pose a challenge. Since the controller parameters are determined offline in classic PID control, these gains are unchangeable and cannot overcome the mentioned challenges in this system. Hence, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller, which is a combination of fuzzy logic and a conventional PID controller, is proposed to control the grinding system, especially in the presence of model mismatch and disturbances. In addition, in order to solve the system challenges, a multivariable control approach based on an improved disturbance observer is proposed to suppress the effects of the disturbances. The most important feature of the algorithm proposed in this paper as the combination of fuzzy logic self-tuning PID and improved disturbance observer is its ability to eliminate system interaction, attenuate internal and external disturbances, and compensate the effect of system uncertainty on the performance of the ball mill grinding circuit. Simulation results in the cases of the set-point change in particle size and circulating load in the presence of model mismatch and external disturbances confirmed the controller performance compared to other controllers.

Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd., has initiated a scheme for construction of 55 flyovers in Mumbai in India. To ensure speedier completion of projects several new technologies were adopted to save time without compromising on safety and reliability. Many of the flyovers involved large diameter pile foundations carrying loads ranging from 3500kN to 1375kN. Significant time would have been lost in using conventional load testing procedure to check pile capacity apart from the difficulty in mobilizing the load and the obstruction to site movement and traffic on the adjoining roads. High Strain Dynamic Testing was introduced on the project sites in lieu of static load testing after conducting numerous co-relation studies on various project sites. A total of seven co-relation studies have been conducted till date and based on these data static testing has been replaced by dynamic testing on numerous flyovers. The paper presents the results of such studies. CAPWAP analysis was also conducted on the data to evaluate the percent skin friction and end bearing so as to improve future design parameters.

Laboratory flotation tests on sized fractions of a certain number of selected minerals with homologous fatty acid derivatives (i.e. sodium salts and amine acetates) confirm that the higher homologues are more efficient collectors than the lower. Tests were carried out on sized material and finer size fractions floated at lower collector concentrations.It is suggested that selective flotation is best achieved with the reagent which most readily floats the most friable mineral in the ore, and that grade of product will be improved with the lowest usable homologue.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of non-sulphide minerals with fatty acids as collectors is usually less selective than the flotation of sulphide minerals with xanthate collectors. "Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the few years. Accidents rates are at a "plateau" and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not. In more dramatic cases, such as in the BP Texas disaster, organizations that have "exemplary" safety statistics, suddenly have a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Other classic examples are the Piper Alpha disaster and NASA’s Challenger and Columbia disasters and even the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. Looking into the root causes of these accidents provides an insight into the events and deficiencies that led up to the accident, but what are the common features in the organization’s mindset? What characterizes these organizations’ decision-making, their approach to safety and to risk and are there specific cultural features that can be delineated? The research and review presented in this paper covers a period since 1994, which started in the Australian resource industry and since then covered international events. The features of these organizations are summarized as the seven deadly delusions, based on extensiveresearch since 1997 of organizations that suffered unexpected disasters.The Piper Alpha Oil Rig disaster in the North Sea, on the 6 July 1988, was one of the most pivotal events in safety around the world. It changed the thinking and focus of governments, whole industries and led to numerous books and papers. It resulted in new legislation, textbooks and a critical self-examination by the oil and gas industry.In short, an explosion and fire occurred when a pipe started leaking gas and ignited. A temporary flange, with no safety valve, was used to block off this pipe during a maintenance operation the previous shift. The permit to advise operators not to start the pumps on this line was misplaced and lost. Several deficiencies, problems and system failures coincided. A key factor was that the water deluge system was inoperable at the time and failed to extinguish the large fire that erupted, followed by an even larger gas explosion. The accommodation unit, situated on top of the oil rig, was the main "killing field" - most men gathered here to await instructions (which never came) and where they died from smoke inhalation. Later, a large explosion of the gas pipeline from an adjoined rig exploded and killed more people.The line of events and the associated system failures are all very relevant in the analysis of the accident, and provide the only insight into what caused the accident. But much "further back", inside the organization’s culture, lurks more dark matter. The first inclination is to ask what was "deficient" in the culture. Did they not care enough about safety, or about their people? Did they have a culture where production decisions were more important than safety considerations?
