Estimates for South Africa?s coal recoverable reserves made in 1999range from nine to 59 billion tons; latest estimates by the Minerals Bureau suggest that 33 billion tons is a more likely figure. As much as 70% of that coal is located in the Waterberg, Witbank, and Highveld coalfields, as well as lesser amounts in the Ermelo, Free State and Springbok Flats coalfields. However, the Witbank and Highveld coalfields are approaching exhaustion (estimated 9 billion tons of recoverable coal remaining in each), while the coal quality or mining conditions in the Waterberg, Free State and Springbok Flats coalfields are significant barriers to immediate, conventional exploitation. New extraction technologies, technologies exploiting the energy content of the coal in situ, as well as suitable uses and markets for low-grade, high-ash coal are required before the country can utilize its admittedly vast coal resources. Major challenges for exploiting some Limpopo province coalfields are severe water shortages, insufficiently developed infrastructure, fragile environments and poor roof conditions due to the depth and complex geology. In the Central Basin (Witbank, Highveld and Ermelo coalfields) technical innovations for thin seam extraction, economic mining of both pillar coal and intrusion-fragmented resource blocks and the utilization of lower-grade coals are required. The success of the fluidized bed combustion technology is necessary to utilize the low-grade coals of the Free State and Molteno coalfields, while environmental exemption for past problems, together with strategies for mining small, disjointed thin-seam resource blocks, is required in KwaZulu-Natal. Clean coal technologies, coal cost and quality, environmental considerations, sustainable development, the growth of the South African economy and Government?s regulation of the electricity industry are the main challenges to the continued use of coal as South Africa?s primary energy source.

"In the Hydrometallurgical processes, the presence of the so-called "crud" is a constant challenge in solvent extraction. Crud is a stable emulsion which forms along the interface between the aqueous and organic phase. The spread is influenced by the following parameters: first, wind blows the dust and impurities into the open sedimentation tanks. Second, the undissolved solids such as sand transported in the PLS causing problems in conjunction with incorrect agitator design.The crud fraction can decisively impact the efficiency of the hydrometallurgical extraction because the phase interface can constitute a large fraction and the sedimentation tanks cannot react flexibly to it. In the downstream process of the series-connected sedimentation tanks, they are thus all contaminated with crud. At the same time, the necessary mass transport is significantly impeded at the phase boundary between organic phase and aqueous phase due to the crud formation.The transfer of the organic phase into the electrolysis cell can result in a "burnout" of the cathode. The carryover of this electrolyte into the extraction can cause problems with the pH regulation. The carry-over of the organic components into the raffinate also leads to contamination of the leaching circuit. The continuous treatment of the crud with a 3-phase decanter centrifuge is extremely effective in combating this problem. This technology splits all three phases from each other and they are consequently continuously separated. All subsequent process steps exhibit a stable, uniform effectiveness. The main advantage for the customer is that fluctuations in the process are eliminated and the organic phase can be recirculated back to the extraction. The recycling of the solvent alone justifies the investment in less than 6 months as examples from South Africa and Chile show.To operate solvent recovery in daily operation fully automated online at the optimum limit, the decanter centrifuge is equipped with a concentration-dependent pond adjustment called DControl® by this means, we can guarantee our customers the maximum possible solvent recovery and minimize the solvent costs in this process step. This system is presented in detail in this paper."

OK Tedi Mining Ltd. (OTML) is in the process of optimising the concentrator performance. One aspect that has been recently implemented is an upgrade of the existing expert control philosophy on the grinding circuit and this will be the topic of this paper. Ore grinding in SAG mills is a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) process subject to several disturbances, most typical being quick acting disturbances such as changes in ore characteristics like hardness and particle size and slow acting disturbances such as ball charge variations and liner wear. The OTML SAG mills treat ore from diverse ore bodies and receive fresh feed subject to large changes in particle size. These circumstances make these mills particularly challenging to control. In this paper, a comparative analysis is presented between the performance of the OTML SAG mill #2 before and after the commissioning of a hybrid control strategy. The strategy uses Expert Knowledge combined with advanced disturbance rejection to reduce the variability of the main process variables, especially pressure and power. It further optimises the overall operation by driving the SAG mill #2 against process constraints (e.g. high power, high motor temperature and high scats recycle rate) and maintaining the operation at or near this point. This strategy is implemented by a combination of the manipulated variables (i.e. fresh feed tonnage and % solids) at any given time.The paper will present trends and a statistical analysis of the comparative results of the mill operation over a period of months, showing a 30% reduction in mill power / pressure variability and a 12% improvement in average power drawn. An increase in throughput was also observed, but cannot be conclusively attributed to the change in mill control due to other changes that were made to the SAG mill #2 during the period of comparison. An additional benefit includes better acceptance from the operators with improved consistency of the SAG mill #2 operation across shifts.The paper will also discuss further improvements envisaged in the continued optimisation of the grinding control circuit.CITATION:Savage, C, Rodriguez, R and Metzner, G, 2013. The electrowinning of beryllium from beryllium oxide (BeO) using a molten-salt electrolyte composed of 56 LiF-37 BeF2-7 BeO (mole-percent) was investigated. Anodes made of porous carbon were found to be superior in current-carrying capacity and gave a lower cell voltage than other types of anode material tested. When porous carbon anodes were used) the resultant increase in anode area prevented anode passivation. The cell voltage was 3.3 volts) and electrode current efficiencies of 50 to 70 percent were obtained. The electrodeposited beryllium was recovered as beryllium powder or was coalesced to metal beads by heating to 1,300° C.

The new underground facilities for the LINAC Coherent Light Source project at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Menlo Park, CA, are constructed in very weak sedimentary rock interspersed with uncemented zones. In addition to several 21-footwide (excavated) tunnels, the NATM excavations include a large, 49-foot wide (excavated) cavern, an unprecedented size in this geology. The critical design issues include characterization of the weak rock, some shallow rock cover areas, and very stringent criteria for final invert slab movements within the tunnel. The design also incorporated severe seismic criteria, since the site is in close proximity to the San Andreas Fault.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unprecedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by a herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 460,000 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country’s oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the beginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million barrels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but produced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation’s petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil – coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. Since World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum products has become the order of the day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has increased enough to meet domestic requirements by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects – one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the overall daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 60 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields – having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each – must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly, or perhaps more rapidly, than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each were discovered and proved – an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year’s supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the number of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. In general a term "unconventional mining or "non-traditional mining technology" getting more and move familiar to the mining engineering media. There are several alternating terminological combinations such as "in situ mining", "borehole mining", "shaftless mining", "mineless mining", "geotechnology" etc.; specific terms denote particular method of unconventional mining technology: "underground coal gasification in situ", "underground coal combustion in situ", "borehole hydraulic coal mining" and others. Principal scheme of unconventional coal mining technology is shown in [Figure 1:] One of the greatest potential for coal utilisation during the beginning decades of on coming cetury is the synthetic fuel-gas derived from coal as a product of coal gasification. It is quite logical to enrich this gas before burning it with natural gas, that is methane, contained in coal measures. Thus it is reasonable to suggest a new concept of unconventional coal mining and utilization technology featuring integrated methane drainage with coal-gas combined cycle. Proposed unconventional technology of coal mining is characterized with: - opening up a coat deposit through boreholes, drilled from the surface and used for coalbed methane drainage as well as for coat gasification in situ; - aggregation of methane producing and coal gasification station on mining side with thermo power plant on the electric power generation side in one integrated industrial enterprise. The further improvement of the conventional coal mining technologies both surface and underground could give only insignificant results in economical, ecological and social aspects, but would not be able to provide basic requirements of the XXI-st century. Significant increase in economical efficiency, cardinal humanization of coal mining and basic improvements in environment protection would be achieved through introduction and implementation of innovative or unconventional coal mining technology. These considerations are applied on both coal production and coal utilization sides as far as coat based energy generation is concerned. Now a general opinion is widely spread that an application in the same manner of the traditional technologies of coal mining and electric power generation would inevitably cause further irreversible damage of the global eco-system, notwithstanding the certain environment protection measures being taken. Keeping the recent pace of the eco-system degradation the whole our civilization would be in danger. Thus the solution of this problem is to be found in developing, promoting and implementing in industry unconventional coal mining and modern advanced clean coal technologies. Coal reserves with favourable conditions at shallow depths are -being rapidly depleted in all countries with developed coal industry. So in nearest future more coat will be mined from deeper levels with higher operational expences and with lower labour productivity. For example in Russia only 20% of proven coal reserves can be specified in quality as easy mined reserves, i.e. coal reserves with a good minability. Unconventional (borehole in situ) coal mining enables us to mine difficult coal reserves, deposited under unfavourable geological conditions with higher economical and socio-ecological efficiency than that in conventional coal mining, in view of these the basic principles and concepts of coal mining and coal utilization for energy generation should be reconsidered taking into account the latest achievments in underground coal gasification/combustion, coalbed methane extraction, clean coat technology and advanced developments in environmental engineering. The authors have developed a new concept of ecologically clean and resource saving coal-gas electricity, protected by a patent of Russian Federation (1995). The main principles and technological features of these conceptual technologies are explained hereupon. It should be a break through into a coal mining technology of new generation, which is known as unconventional coal mining technology. Under current global energy policy, transection to the new generation of coal mining technology is inevitable. Now we are standing at the treshhold of the coat's regeneration based on integrated unconventional coal mining and innovative coal fueled electric generation technologies.

This paper compares the modeling results obtained by using a single seed waveform (SS) versus multiple seed waveforms (MS) as inputs to the Multiple Seed Waveform (MSW) blast vibration model. The field data for the comparison was collected at a coal mine. The results of the comparison showed that the MSW model yields more accurate predictions and significantly higher correlation to field measurement when using MS as input. When using a single seed waveform as input, different seed waves result in different predictions of PPV. In contrast, using the multiple seed waveforms as an input, more consistent results are obtained.

Improvements in production of high-purity chromium metal by magnesium reduction of anhydrous chlorides and by hydrogen treatment of electrolytic chromium are reported. Hydrogen-treated chromium has been arc-melted, and the arc-melted material has been successfully forged, rolled, and swaged. The material also has been forged at liquid-air temperatures. X-ray and metallographic studies indicate the recrystallization temperature of rolled chromium sheet to be about 750° C. Preliminary investigation of hot-bending characteristics of rolled chromium sheet shows the minimum bending temperature to be about 325° C. The heat resistance of chromium has been investigated.

A variety of modeling techniques can be utilized to forecast metal production at heap leaching operations. These approaches reflect a wide range of complexity, flexibility, time to implement, cost, and accuracy. For many operators, a spreadsheet-based modeling technique is attractive since the calculations are directly accessible, models can often be developed by site staff, and the results are generally easy to extract and interpret. The authors have developed a spreadsheet-based modeling technique that provides a high degree of flexibility, while still considering detailed operating information for ore properties, leach kinetics, scaleup factors, lift height, and in-heap metal inventories. The technique involves establishing kinetic leach curves for each ore type to characterize metal extractions, followed by application of separate metal recovery curves to define the rate at which leached metals exit the heap in pregnant solution, taking into account delays due to the in-heap solution inventory. At any point in time, the difference between total metal extracted and total metal recovered is equal to the in-heap inventory of the leached metal. This modeling technique is particularly useful for larger multi-lift heaps where delays in metal recovery are appreciable due to in-heap solution holdup. The technique is also applicable to sites with multiple heaps, leach cycles, and/or metal recovery plants (e.g., carbon columns for gold; solvent extraction for copper). This paper describes the modeling technique, including input data required and methods for defining kinetic leach curves and metal recovery curves. The technique is compared against an alternative spreadsheet technique using a simplified in-heap solution inventory calculation to forecast metal production, which has proven to be effective at a number of sites.

TRANSFER to the Bureau of Mines of the responsibility for conservation and production of helium, and announcement that a proposal has been made to the President for commercial operation of the Los Angeles has attracted new attention to the helium program of the Government. The matter is one in which mining engineers, and the mining industry in general, have a peculiar interest. Helium is a byproduct of the petroleum and natural gas industry. It is found in certain of the natural gases which have themselves been discovered, in the main, in the search for oil. If it is to be produced on a large scale, the conservation and development of the fields will necessarily be done by the men of the oil and gas industry. There is no known or expected source of supply of quantities of commercial importance save in the natural gas fields. Not all gas wells supply helium and none of them supply it in important percentages. If it were necessary to prospect a field, develop it, lay pipe lines and build production plants for the helium alone, the cost would be prohibitive. On that basis helium would necessarily be restricted to essential war uses, where cost is subordinate to need. As a byproduct of the natural gas in certain, at least, of the fields in the United States there is distinct reason for anticipating that it may be produced in amounts and at a cost that will permit its regular use in commercial airships.

IF you have ever travelled in the valley lying between the Selkirks and the Rockies in the East Koorenay district, you will have noted that the former mountains are rounded and massive, while the serrated peaks of the latter, fingering into the sky, bring an entirely different. picture. These two mountain ranges, with the comparatively level valley between, serve splendidly to introduce the subject for discussion. It is rather strange that, despite the fact that wear is undoubredly the greatest force with which human ingenuity bas to contend, it has come in for very little study from the stand point of pure science. Empiricism has been the sole ally in the fight for improvement! That we may have a clear understanding as to what we mean by wear, I would include in the term the breaking dawn of ail solid matter, from the natural wearing dawn of the mountains previously mentioned, to the hale in the mill pipe-line, which forces one to shut-down-usually at some un-earthly hour-to carry out a repair. It seems a far cry from mountains to mill launders or pipe-lines, but, magnified sufficiently, most of the materials with which we have to deal would show surfaces not unlike those we see around us. The progressive steps of wear, or ?erosion' as our geological friends would prefer to term it, are exemplified in the two ranges of mountains and the valley between. True, the wearing dawn by natural forces is a slow process. The aeons which have passed since first these mountains were formed seem endless. The natural forces pitted against them seem puny in the light of the interminable rime that has been needed to effect the changes. But here, as in the case of the materials with which we are dealing day by day, the combination of many forces ultimately brings about that condition which we describe as 'worn out'. In the case of the mountains, it is when they are finally levelled into plains, and in the case of equipment which we use, it is when that equipment will no longer serve its purpose.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. At Calliachar Burn, 14 steeply dipping quartz-sulphide veins, with and without gold, infill master joints that crosscut gently dipping metasediments and metabasics of the Pitlochry Schist Formation. The wallrock is extremely bleached and enriched in sericite, chlorite and carbonate. Gold grades vary from high with quartz-galena-pyrite to low with galena-chalcopyrite; the gold forms electrum inclusions smaller than 20 micrometres in pyrite or, rarely, arsenopyrite. At Urlar Burn, gold is present in small amounts in 4 quartz-galena-chalcopyrite veins. Although much of the mineralogy is similar to that at Calliachar, there are significant differences in Sb-, Te-, Bi- and Hg-bearing phases. Fluid inclusion data suggest mineralisation occurred over the range 320-140 degrees C, from fluids with significant CO2 and 2-13 wt% equiv. NaCl. Mantle-derived fluids appear to have been generated during the late Caledonian and focused by the Urlar Burn fault

That you are giving the Daniel C. Jackling award to me is a great personal honor. But more significantly, it is a recognition that geostatistics has come of age. And since I am considered by many as belonging to an older generation of geostatisticians, I thought that it would be fitting that I reflect on where geostatistics came from and where it might be going. First, though, let me propose a definition of geostatistics. Etymologically, paraphrasing Webster's definitions of "geo" and "statistics," it is "a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of masses of numerical data taken from the earth." This definition is most appropriate in the context of mining geostatistics. It includes both classical and spatial statistics. It emphasizes the earth aspect, or the analysis of geologic features. And it should remind the practitioner that geologic input is a critical part of all geostatistical applications. In the 1910s, statistical methods were already used to analyze geological data. However, the origin of geostatistics, as we know it today, is best set in the late 1940s, when H.S. Sichel recognized the lognormal distribution of sample values in the South African gold mines. In 1951, Daniel Krige observed that "it can be expected that the gold values in a whole mine will be subject to a larger relative variation than those in a portion of the mine." In other words, samples taken close to each other are more likely to have similar values than if taken farther apart. This observation is the foundation on which spatial statistics, which characterizes values defined in a multidimensional space, is built. However, the 1950s were marked by studies based on classical, as opposed to spatial, statistics. It was only in the 1960s that the need was recognized to model the similarity between sample values as a function of the distance between samples and that the semivariogram was defined. A theoretical framework was developed by Matheron that supplied an elegant mathematical explanation to the empirical observations made by Krige. Matheron coined the term "kriging" in recognition of Krige's pioneering work on the geostatistical evaluation of mineral deposits. As soon as this theoretical framework was developed, it was possible to bring geostatistics to the academic world. The "Centre de Geostatistiques" was founded in Fontainebleau. Numerous students were trained there, disciples eager not only to improve the theory and develop more sophisticated mathematical tools, but also to spread the new faith throughout the world. Volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits in ancient, submarine volcanic belts of Australia include mound, lens and sheet-style Zn-rich polymetallic deposits, massive and disseminated pyritic Cu-Au deposits and disseminated, stratabound Au-only deposits. Variation in morphologies, metal ratios, volcanic environments and alteration features indicates there exists a spectrum of deposits from the classic VHMS model, to hybrids between VHMS-porphyry Cu and VHMS-epithermal end members. Zn-rich, polymetallic deposits form eitheron, or just below, the seafloor, whereas the Cu-Au and Au-only deposits form sub-seafloor by replacement of specific volcanic lithologies. Alteration zoned outwards from quartz -> chlorite -> sericite ¦ carbonate is typical of VHMS deposits across the spectrum. Quartz and carbonate alteration is dominant in the Au-only systems,chlorite alteration is commonly developed close to Cu-rich ores, and sericite and carbonate alteration zones are well developed in the stratiform Zn-rich ores. The most useful geochemical vectors for Zn-rich ores are the alteration index [AI=100(MgO + K2O)/(MgO + K2O + CaO + Na2O)], the chlorite-carbonate-pyrite index [CCPI=100(MgO + FeO)/(MgO + FeO + K2O + Na2O)], Mn content of carbonate, Mg/(Mg+Fe) ratio of chlorite,whole-rock Tl, Sb and Ba/Sr ratio, S34S of pyrite, and whole-rock S18O. The most useful vectors for pyritic Cu-Au ores are AI, CCPI, S/Na2O ratio, Na content of white mica, and Fe content of carbonate.

During the coming decade, many of the first generation of ‘super-pit’ gold and base metal mining operations in North and Latin America will reach the end of their economic lives. The closure of such pits in a manner which is environmentally sustainable presents a considerable challenge to the minerals industry. Pit closure often results in the partial or total inundation of formerly dewatered mining operations, and the resultant formation of lakes. The development of techniques for predicting, and controlling, the chemistry, groundwater discharge characteristics and long term hydrospheric impact of these lakes has become a critical aspect of pit closure planning. In this sense, the paper point out that Sleeper Mine was the first of a new generation of open pit gold mines developed in Nevada, USA. The closure of the Sleeper pit exemplifies the use of a range of pragmatic approaches to pit flooding, with applicability to mine closure at many other sites throughout the Américas.
