"The Cobalt embayment is a large domain of Paleoproterozoic clastic sedimentary rocks that unconformably overlies the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt. Regionally extensive sills and dikes of Nipissing diabase, emplaced circa 2219 Ma, occur throughout the embayment and are the preferential host to gold-bearing polymetallic vein systems on the Merico-Ethel property, near the northeastern margin of the Cobalt embayment. These gold-bearing, polymetallic veins are predominantly east-west-trending, steeply dipping, discordant calcite- quartz vein systems that formed close to the time of crystallization (within ~15 m.y., based on Pb-Pb ages) of the Nipissing diabase. The ore mineralogy is complex in character, typically comprising sulfides, arsenides, native metals (gold and silver), and specular hematite, preferentially concentrated along the interface between silicate and calcite gangue. A simplified sequence of mineral deposition in the veins is: (1) "Early-stage" pyrite ± chalcopyrite hosted in quartz ± chlorite gangue; (2) "Main-stage" polymetallic (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U) sulfides, arsenides, and native metals hosted in calcite gangue; and (3) "Late-stage" calcite flooding ± galena. Wall-rock alteration in Nipissing diabase is restricted to narrow (<5 cm) haloes of calcite-chloriteepidote- bearing assemblages, whereas a weak alteration halo of specular hematite, calcite, and allanite-epidote has been observed in the surrounding sedimentary rocks. In terms of their age, geology, mineralogy, paragenesis, and morphology, the gold-bearing vein systems at Merico-Ethel closely resemble the silver-sulfarsenide vein deposits of the historic Cobalt and Gowganda mining camps. These observations indicate that the Au-bearing veins are variants of the Ag-vein systems and as such, have a common genesis belt. Longwall mining has a high potential for producing bulk production from a single face. Production is interrupted for a considerable time when it is necessary to move the equipment to a new block of coal. The frequency of such moves can be reduced by increasing the dimension of the block to be moved. Merely doubling the tonnage in a block to be mined may increase production by more than 21,000 tons per year. The time taken to move the equipment can be reduced by careful preplanning, industrial engineering analysis, and specially designed equipment. Reducing its move time from 30 days to five days can increase production by more than 25,000 tons per year. Increasing the panel dimensions and reducing the move time can give an increase in pretax profits of more than $600,000. A comprehensive bibliography is included.

From the title of this chapter the reader could expect an attempt to outline the anticipated shape of things to come, mineralwise. We have no crystal ball and if we possessed one we could claim no expertness in its use. In the first place no one can tell the future status of man. No one has any way of knowing to what extent peace will prevail, nor to what extent changes may occur in national sovereignties or forms of government or in international relationships. So future man is an uncertainty. Nor can we predict new developments that may result in significant changes in man&apos;s status or in the mineral industry or both. If, for example, this chapter had been written in the middle 1930&apos;s, nearly everything that has happened since in the field of atomic energy would have been missed. Yet what a vast change this has made in the status of man! Also the changes in the mineral industry have been important. A writer would have been bold indeed had he prophesied that uranium would play such an important role. But we need not confine our foggy vision to the atomic energy field. The steep rise in the use of aluminum, titanium, and germanium reflects the unpredictable in what may be thought of as the more normal pursuits. This should not discourage one from using the past and currently observable trends as bases for limited predictions. To do this, however, it is desirable to make certain assumptions about man&apos;s status without even a pretense that these assumptions have a high probability of fulfillment: 1. Only minor changes will occur in the geographical boundaries of the nations of the world. 2. World War III will not take place in the near future. 3. As a consequence of (2), man will not destroy himself by wanton use of atomic weapons. 4. Disarmament will take place, if at all, gradually rather than all at one time. Under the above assumptions the world will enjoy a period of relative peace even though the status may be one of an armed truce. The assump-

Because of an urgent national need for manganese, the deposits in the Little Florida Mountains of Lune County N. Mex., were visited by O.H. Metzger, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 12 and 13, 1940, accompanied on the second day by S. G. Lasky, a geologist of the Federal Geological Survey. After this preliminary examination, it was recommended that exploratory work be done by the Bureau of Mines on several properties in the district. An exploratory project of trenching, sampling, and core drilling was started by the Bureau of Mines in September 1940 and completed in May 1941.2/ Work was done on three properties - the Luna mine, the American group of claims, and the Manganese Valley mine. The Little Florida manganese district is situated on the eastern slope of the Little Florida Mountains about 2 miles south of U. S. Highway 80-90, 12 to 14 miles southeast of Deming, Luna County, N. Mex. The principal claims comprise the Luna Manganese, American, and Manganese Valley groups.

Dynatec Mining Limited contracted to sink a lS00 metre (4960 ft.) concrete lined shaft for Falconbridge Nickel Mines in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The shaft is 6.3 metres (20.S ft.) in diameter inside the concrete lining and is equipped with steel furnishings. Dynatec used the owner supplied 4.6 metre (l5 ft.) diameter double-drum hoist to sink the shaft with 12.S tonne buckets for muck removal and 4 cubic metre concrete buckets for concrete placement. One of the unique features of the shaft sinking operation is the use of a four-boom electric hydraulic drill jumbo permanently mounted in the shaft sinking stage. This paper will describe the performance obtained with the electric hydraulic drilling equipment and the high capacity muck removal and concreting equipment.

"Several studies on the bulk density of coals prepared for byproduct-oven use were undertaken during the war by the Bureau of lanes in cooperation with the Office of the Solid Fuels Administrator and with the advice of the Coke Production Committee. The primary purpose of these studies was either to produce more uniform coke or to increase the throughput of existing facilities or both; the goal was increased Production of steel for war. As these studies were made, detailed reports were sent to the individual companies with whom the Bureau cooperated; also two reports,5/6/on the general subject of bulk-density control were published. In the course of the work, data were gathered that now prove of value in judging the merit of carious methods of testing bulk density and the limits of application of each method in byproduct-oven operations.Since the cessation of hostilities, the .Bureau section (Coke Production Survey Section) that conducted this work has been liquidated, but it was felt advisable to prepare a report on the accumulated experience so that it would be in a form available for the use of the industry and also as a base for any further research on the control of fluctuating bulk densities in coke ovens.It is hoped that the data and experiences recorded herein will be of material assistance to the many who have had difficulty in obtaining reproducible results in bulk-density testing. Since the data were gathered in the course of extending aid to individual plants in minimizing the deleterious effects of fluctuations in bulk density of oven charges on the quality and quantity of coke produced, certain desirable phases of an over-all investigation were not covered. However, on certain of these phases qualitative indications are available and the policy followed herein is that suggested by the American Society for Testing Materials Manual on Presentation of Data7/ that lacking quantitative information, relevant material should be included even though it ""may be qualitative in character, some may even be vague."""

Alacer Gold Corporation is constructing the Çöpler Gold Mine in eastern Turkey. Mining commenced in the fourth quarter of 2009 and gold production started in the fourth quarter of 2010. The mine is a 15,500 t/day oxide heap leach with three-stage crushing, agglomeration, carbon adsorption and electrowinning for final metal recovery. Leach solution copper levels are expected to be relatively low during the first two years of production, but will increase in later years due to higher copper content in the mined and processed ore. Over the mine life, approximately 40 Mt of ore will be placed on the leach pad, which will contain about 35,000 t of copper. Metallurgical testing indicates copper extraction will vary by ore type and, if controls are not implemented, may lead to copper levels exceeding 1,000 mg/L in pregnant solution. High copper levels in leach solution have the deleterious effect of increasing cyanide consumption and potentially overwhelming the ability of the carbon circuit to effectively adsorb the principal economic metals, which in this case are gold and silver. Using data obtained from laboratory leach column testwork, the heap leach facility was modeled using METSIM process simulation software to estimate the build-up of copper in leach solution over the life of the mine. Laboratory testwork was also performed to evaluate process conditions for treating a portion of pregnant leach solution via sulfide addition to precipitate saleable copper as copper sulfide (Cu2S).

Cooling tower design has not advanced significantly in the last decade. Recognising this, Outotec has developed an innovative horizontal outflow cooling tower with increased performance compared to conventional design cooling towers.Outotec&#174; Cooling Towers operate today in applications such as spent electrolyte cooling in zinc plants and for gypsum removal before copper solvent extraction. In such applications the use of this latest design has enabled increased production and lower maintenance costs in the downstream operations.In actual operations, the cooling performance has been confirmed at start-up, and has demonstrated that the towers operate in accordance with the CFD modelling. In the last three years these towers have proven themselves in commercial operation to operate with high efficiency and availability.This case study will outline comparative data, collected over two years at a site where both Outotec and conventional cooling towers are operating. The data shows that Outotec cooling towers require less than half the maintenance time of conventional cooling towers, when adjusted to a total solution flow basis. A close partnership approach with the site has allowed continual development, ensuring high availability and high performance.Experience with previous cooling tower installations guided the development of maintenance philosophies and procedures; this resulted in a design where maintenance intensive components were accessible from the top of the cooling tower. Introduction The recent uranium discovery at Theano point, lake Superior, is probably a rediscovery of the first reported Canadian uranium occurrence. A description of material from the original discovery was published in 1847 by J. L. LeConte, and many attempts have been made to relocate the deposit. Such attempts have in the past been unsuccessful because of vagueness in the original description of the locality. Besides being a prospect that seems to merit development work, the Camray discovery is important because it reaffirms the occurrence of pitchblende in the eastern part of the Precambrian shield. Much staking followed the announcement of the discovery, and some additional finds have been reported. Location The Camray discovery is at the shore of Theano point, lake Superior, about seventy miles north of Sault Ste. Marie (see Figure 1). It is in township 29, range XIV, district of Algoma. The showing is two miles from Highway No. 17, and is reached by a rough trail that leaves the highway at mileage 72.9 from Sault Ste. Marie. There are no towns of any size nearer than Sault Ste. Marie.

The coke analogue is a new research tool that has been developed to quantify and characterize the effect minerals in coke have on coke reactivity. The analogue material is made from a number of different carbon or carbon containing materials and minerals to in part replicate real industrial coke’s reactivity behavior. Elucidation of the effects of minerals on coke reactivity has proved difficult due to the complex and heterogeneous nature of industrial coke and the potential non-additive effects of minerals on coke reactivity. The coke analogue addresses this complexity and heterogeneity through control of its mineralogy, mineral size and mineral dispersion through the analogue, porosity and carbon structures. Initial studies using the analogue were focused on coke dissolution kinetics in liquid iron but recent work has focused in characterization of its porosity, carbon structure and rate of reaction.

"The efficiency of the flotation process depends on how effectively air is dispersed into small bubbles. Bubble surface area flux - the surface area of bubbles per unit time per unit cross-section area of a cell - is emerging as the parameter to characterize gas dispersion. One of the approaches proposed to measure bubble surface area flux in industrial cells is based on the measurement of two variables: gas velocity and gas holdup, using separate sensors. Plant testing of the gas velocity sensor gave evidence of a series of operational problems which may be necessary to correct before attempting to characterize gas dispersion. Problems such as uneven air distribution within a cell and along a bank, faulty air and slurry valves detected during attempts to redistribute air, and poor control of pulp level and gas flow became evident. Detection of these problems from gas velocity measurements is illustrated.INTRODUCTIONBubble surface area flux is considered a key variable in the optimization of flotation circuit performance (Gorain et al., 1997; 1998). The Mineral Processing Group at McGill University has devised and developed a method for estimating bubble surface area flux in industrial flotation cells (Finch et al., 1999). The method is based on measuring gas holdup and superficial gas velocity using two separate sensors and applying drift flux analysis to estimate bubble size (Dobby et al., 1988; Banisi and Finch, 1994). With bubble size and superficial gas velocity known bubble surface area flux can be calculated.This method was selected by Noranda to characterize gas dispersion in cells as part of a program to model and optimize flotation circuit performance. However, initial testing at Brunswick Mine with the gas velocity sensor provided some unexpected results indicating operational problems and equipment malfunctions that needed to be addressed before systematic measurement of gas dispersion could be initiated.The subject of this communication is to illustrate the detection of these problems from gas velocity measurements. The line 3 Zn Cleaner circuit comprising four stages of Denver DR cells was the main subject of analysis, including the effect of correcting these problems on the metallurgical performance of the Zn 3rd cleaner bank of ten DRl 00 cells."

The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge was built in the early 50s&apos; and was first opened to traffic on August 31, 1956. Among California&apos;s longest steel bridges, it spans more than 21,000 feet across the northern portion of San Francisco Bay. It is one of six toll bridges currently undergoing seismic retrofit in the Bay area. Current retrofit criteria require the structure not to collapse in a Magnitude 8.3 earthquake lasting 45 seconds on the San Andreas Fault. The earthquake epicenter is 10 miles to the west of the Bridge, near the mouth of San Francisco Bay. Another major fault is the Hayward Fault, with a potential of a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. It is only 4 miles east of the eastern end of the bridge. The retrofit criterion is that the structure survives these earthquakes without collapse or loss of life, and that they are capable of repair within a period of one year. Therefore an energy absorbing, ductility and nominal resistance based approach to the retrofit design have been adopted for the retrofit of this bridge. Foundation Retrofit The foundation retrofits were designed to satisfy of drift criteria of 6 inches at the base of the footings, and to keep the existing H-piles from experiencing unacceptable levels of permanent soil displacement and /or structural rupture. Full-scale structural lateral load testing of BP14x89 piling, to rupture, has helped to determine the drift criteria. However recent non-linear analytical results, have led to a redesign, which may allow for 12 inches of drift. The as-built analysis of the Micropile piers determined that those piers would not exceed the 6-inch drift criteria so lateral resisting shear piles were not needed at those piers.

This report presents a literature review conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The review summarizes what has been learned from the large volume of empirical studies on the effectiveness of eight types of interventions intended to increase organizational effectiveness via in the management of human resources. The interventions concern the following: recruitment, selection, training, objective feedback, goal setting, reward systems, participative management practices and organization development. Although many of these interventions appear to have the potential for improving the safety and efficiency of mining operations, it does not appear that they are being widely used. Examples are given of the successful use of a few of these interventions at mining operations. An analysis of the relationship between coal mine productivity and safety is also presented. This analysis generally supports the view that good safety performance and high productivity are NOT incompatible goals. In fact, safe mines also tend to be more productive and vice versa.

In the year 1581, the counselors of King Philip of Spain suggested to that monarch that a canal across the Isthmus of Darien would open the west coast of the South American continent to Spanish miners and explorers, enlarging and expanding the flow of precious metals then just beginning to trickle across the path cut by Spanish Conquistadors, from old Panama to Puerto Bello on the east coast. The King sent out a party of surveyors and explorers under the command of a young engineer, Savadaerro, who returned after two years, reporting upon a location for a canal which was virtually adopted by the French engineers employed by De Lesseps, who in 1877 commenced the work of constructing the Panama Canal-296 years after Sava- daerro&apos;s first survey was begun. The suggestion for an Isthmian canal, made to the king at a time when Spain was a proud, virile nation and when that country was contending with England in the fields of discovery and conquest, represents a measure of vision that has never failed to intrigue the imagination. That the young Spanish engineer recommended an undertaking so gigantic in conception that it took three and one-third centuries for its completion from the time it was first visioned matters little. Current production costs and market conditions in the potash industry of the Carlsbad area were studied to determine the potential values of the potash mineral resource that would be lost or foregone if the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) facility is constructed on the proposed site in that area. The purpose of the WIPP project is to investigate the possibility of developing a nuclear waste disposal plant in the salt formations at the site. Analyses were made of all potash deposits determined to be in the site. Mining and processing under the most favorable recovery systems were considered. Value determinations were based upon estimated operating and capital costs of current mine-mill operations in the Carlsbad area. This study was made for the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) by members of the Federal Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System staff.

"This paper develops themes explained at two SAIMM platinum conferences. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long-term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can be increased significantly, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. Recent studies of NPV have aimed to simultaneously evaluate the impact of the optimized financial solution on the non-financial features of a project or operation.The case study presented comprised a commercially orientated review of the prefeasibility study designs and cost estimates of a platinum group metal (PGM) project in South Africa, followed by value chain optimization and sustainability studies of the project carried out simultaneously to identify potential value uplifts to be gained and guide the owners’ team going forward into the feasibility study phase. Some of the major aspects of the project that were found to have significant potential to add value included enhancement of the business model by the application of activitybased costing and theory of constraints, focus on the highest net value portions of the orebody in the early years of production, enhanced and optimized scheduling of the underground mining operation, application of dynamic grind and percentage mass recovery from ore to flotation concentrate (also known as percentage mass pull) to optimize revenue, application of elevated cut-off grades early in the life of mine, matching of the mining and processing capacity, expansion of the operation subject to capital availability, and installation of downstream processing facilities subject to regional third-party capacities.The investigation of non-financial project features focused on demonstrating that a financially optimized solution could also have a number of other benefits. These are mentioned briefly in the paper, which aims to present the status of the project at an early stage of its development."

This Information Circular is an abstract of a manuscript which was completed in June 1933, by Mr. Hugh M. Wolflin, formerly of the U. S. Bur eau of Mines. This abstract has been prepared by Charles Will Wright for presentation at the February meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in New York. It has been necessary to omit many of the details and most of the cost data and tables, as well as the illustrations in the original manuscript. As the use of airplanes in mining developments is making such progress and as a publication on this subject to be of greatest value should include the most recent information, it is unfortunate that, due to a lack of printing funds, it has not been possible to publish this manuscript. The purposes of Mr. Wolflin&apos;s paper are: (1) To describe briefly what has been accomplished in some outstanding examples by the use of aircraft in the mining and petroleum industries, (2) To record costs, (3) To present available information and suggestions to assist in solving future air-transportation problems in the industries under consideration.

While the original purpose of the Bureau of Mines work on fluorine micas was to synthesize large single crystals or film suitable to replace natural muscovite or phlogopite, the objective was broadened to include development of the many possible fluorine micas as a class of new, unique materials. Several methods were developed for the synthesis of the fluorine micas at atmospheric pressure: Solid state reaction, melting in crucibles, internal resistance electric melting, and arc resistance electric melting. The latter two methods are now med commercially. A variety of fluoromicas were synthesized by isomorphic substitution including disilicic, trisilicic, and tetrasilicic. Fluorophlogopite, KMg3AlSi3O10F2, is the fluoromica most widely used. While most of the fluoromicas are completely stable to water, many water-swelling fluoromicas and fluoromontmorrilonoids were synthesized. Single crystals or film of the fluorine micas were grown to 2 inches or more by a number of methods, but none has as yet proved economical. In the report, detailed data and descriptions are given on compositions, syntheses, products, and uses, and on the properties including physical, dielectric, chemical, X-ray, optical, and structural.

Since its formation in 2004, the Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf (EMEPC) has been collecting hydrographic, geological and geophysical data to support the extension of the continental shelf beyond 200 NM. In 2008, the EMEPC acquired a 6,000 m rated ROV named "Luso" and has been cooperating with several national and international institutions to increase and improve its operational capabilities to conduct research on deep-sea minerals. The Portuguese continental shelf corresponds to a broad area of the seafloor encompassing different physiographic domains: the mid-Atlantic ridge system, abyssal plains and numerous seamounts. From 2008 to the present, the mid- Atlantic ridge and seamounts have been the most visited sites with the ROV "Luso". Several hydrothermal vent sites are known to occur along the mid-Atlantic ridge to the south of the Azores archipelago and mostly within the Portuguese EEZ. Vent fields were also discovered in the extended continental shelf, namely the Rainbow and the Moytirra sites located to south and to the north of the Azores archipelago, respectively. The most studied seamounts correspond to those forming the Great Meteor chain and the Madeira- Tore rise. All these visited sites are related either with the occurrence of polymetallic sulphides or cobalt rich Fe-Mn crusts and the opportunities to further pursue their exploration will be discussed.
