Phase designs are the foundation upon which all open pit mine sequence optimizations and budgets should be built. Unfortunately, at times, mine engineers skip the step of developing realistic pit phase designs - designs that include access ramps and mineable widths. Without mineable phase designs, their optimized schedules are based on theoretical pit shells or ?quick-and-dirty? plans with no ramps. The output from such optimizations is almost always overly optimistic. Without mineable designs, the production estimates are misleading, because they overestimate ore, and underestimate waste stripping requirements. Worse yet, when plans are not based on realistic phase designs, they can point to exactly the wrong decision in feasibility studies (i.e. ?go? when it should be ?no-go?). This paper discusses the importance and features of good pit phase design, and demonstrates the pitfalls of relying on optimized production sequences that are not based on properly designed pit phases.

"A study of the geological features of known occurrences of mineralization in Gaspe is the basis for a classification. Nickel, chromite, asbestos and some copper are pre-or syn-Taconic, whereas the most important deposits are tied to granitic post-Taconic stocks. Most occurrences are clearly related to igneous rocks: nickel, chromium and asbestos to Ordovician serpentinite; copper to volcanic rocks of different ages; and copper, zinc and lead to acidic intrusions with apparent zoning. Some lead-zinc deposits lying between the Grande Greve and York Lake formations are stratigraphically controlled. Some occurrences are tied to faults; e.g., the nickel-copper mineralization along the North Grand Pabos fault. Northerly-trending transverse structures appear to coincide with the Gaspe Copper, Mount McGerrigle (Tabletop) granite and Lemieux dome areas of mineralization. JEAN DUGAS, after graduating"

It is the purpose of this paper to examine a number of the recent developments in powder metallurgy, being most concerned with those which are yet to prove themselves rather than those which have achieved commercial maturity. Such developments include the production of very much coarser and very much finer powders, down to the near-micron size range. Also considered are activated sintering, direct powder rolling and extrusion (both hot and cold), brazing and welding, hydrides of reactive metals, oxide dispersion strengthened alloys and theoretical evaluations. Introduction T HERE surely can't be very much argument with the fact that powder metallurgy has made large advances on many fronts during the past ten or more years (1). "From 2010, the dolomite concentration in the ore fed to the Usoke Plant increased, resulting in a significant increase in the gangue acid consumption and Mg build-up in the circuit, and thus an increase in the Mg:Co ratio in the plant solutions. This affected the Co salt grade, reagent consumption, filtration and drying capacity. Efforts were put in place to minimise the acid consumption and consequently the Mg dissolution (such as use of pre-diluted acid), but the benefits were negligible. Various efforts were then initiated by CHEMAF to improve the cobalt plant productivity (quantity and quality) by process changes, dual precipitation and seed recycle. The positive results obtained in the laboratory were successfully implemented on plant scale. A change in the process from a single-stage precipitation with Na2CO3 to dual precipitation using a combination of Na2CO3 and NaOH improved the capacity of the Co salt filtration by 30%, the Co salt grade and drying capacity by 50%, and reduced the reagent consumption by 22%. Implementation of precipitate seed recycle increased Mg rejection by 40%, improving the Co salt grade from 20% to 25%, and yielding a further drop in reagent consumption. INTRODUCTION CHEMAF (Chemicals of Africa), a mining company located in Katanga province of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been operating since 2003. The Usoke hydrometallurgical plant treats the Cu-Co ore from the Etoile pit to produce Cu cathodes via a leach–solvent-extraction (SX)–electrowinning (EW) circuit and Co salt via a selective precipitation process. The plant was designed to treat run-of-mine (ROM) ore grading 6% Cu and 1.5% Co; but, in 2008, due to a decline in grades, a heavy-media separation (HMS) plant was commissioned to enrich the low-grade ROM (3.5% Cu and 0.5% Co) up to 8% Cu and 1% Co before feeding it to the hydrometallurgical plant. Co is recovered by precipitation of Fe and Al with limestone, followed by Co precipitation as Co carbonate using sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), also known as soda ash. 85% of the final effluent from cobalt precipitation is recycled back to the plant as process water; the balance, 15%, is bled out and compensated for by fresh water top up to control and retard the rate of sodium sulfate build up."

"Between 1934 and 1956, nearly 31 million grams of gold were produced in the Matachewan area from deposits on properties belonging to Young-Davidson Mines Limited and Matachewan Consolidated Mines Limited. In 1979, production from these properties was renewed by Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited.Most of the gold produced has come from relatively lowgrade deposits (3.4 gl t or less) that occur in an east-trending belt of dykes and irregular bodies of trachytic syenite. Although small by comparison, these deposits have some of the characteristics of porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits. The mineralized syenite contains up to 5 per cent disseminated pyrite and is highly fractured and cut by quartz and quartzcarbonate veinlets. Gold occurs as native gold along fractures, in quartz veinlets and as minute inclusions in pyrite. Minor chalcopyrite and trace amounts of scheelite, molybdenite and galena are also present. Mineralization was accompanied by potassic alteration, consisting mainly of potassium feldspar.Some gold was also produced from small, but higher-grade, deposits in volcanic rocks. These deposits occur near the syenite-hosted deposits and consist of quartz veins and stringers mineralized .with pyrite and gold. Minor gold is present in some low-grade, porphyry-type copper-molybdenum occurrences and, locally, in large, isolated quartz veins.Lead isotope analyses suggest that the gold deposits were formed at about 2700 Ma and were locally remobilized at approximately 2400 Ma, following the Kenoran orogeny. The deposits appear to be genetically related to felsic magmas emplaced in an epizonal environment and deposited from hydrothermal solutions relatively concentrated in S and K20."

"Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited utilizes pressure hydro-metallurgical techniques to recover nickel, copper and cobalt from su1phidic concentrates, mattes and various other metal-bearing materials.A brief description of the nickel refinery operation is given. In the nickel refinery process, an ammonia pressure leach is employed to treat the feed materials to dissolve the non-ferrous metals as their respective ammine complexes. The resulting leach solution goes through a series of steps which removes copper as copper sulphide and further purifies the solution prior to nickel precipitation by hydrogen reduction. The reduction end solution, containing the cobalt which was originally present in the leach solution as well as residual nickel, is treated with hydrogen sulphide. The resulting nickel-cobalt sulphide precipitate feeds the soluble cobaltic ammine process, which separates the nickel and cobalt and recovers the cobalt as a pure powder.A detailed description of the cobalt recovery process is given. Included are the various steps, comprising: acid leaching of the mixed sulphides, solution purification, ammine complex formation and cobaltous oxidation, two-stage nickel precipitation, cobalt conversion and reduction. A brief description of cobalt powder handling is included, along with typical physical properties and chemical analyses of the cobalt product. In general, the purpose of this paper is to describe the present plant practices employed in the recovery of cobalt as a by-product of the nickel refinery operations."

In mining coal, the Nation's principal mineral fuel, loss of life has been much lower recently than in earlier years when coal mining contributed so heavily to the industrial-accident death toll in the United States. Particularly notable has been the relatively small number of deaths during the past few years compared with the number that occurred 20 or 30 years ago. Reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, covering all commercially operated mines that were active during all or any part of the calendar year 1935, showed that accidents during that year had resulted in the loss of 1,242 lives. This death toll, although regrettable, represents a material improvement over the industry's experience during most years prior to 1935, and especially over the industry's worst year, 1907, when 3,242 men were killed. Fewer lives were lost in 1933, when 1,064 men were killed at work, than during any year for which complete figures are available.

"PURPOSEThe purpose of this presentation to the Canadian Mineral Processors is to review gold heap leaching systems currently in use and discuss their applicability to Canadian ores. The author's experience with the development and operation of heap leaching spans the past four years at. Pinson, and visits to many ether heap leaches in the western United States.INTRODUCTIONBy way of introduction to the heap leaching system, I will describe in slight detail the method used at Pinson Mining in northern Nevada. This will be followed by a discussion of optional methods in use at other operations visited.The Pinson orebody is a finely disseminated, well-oxidized hydrothermal deposit. Gold particles are finer than 20- microns. The orezone hostrocks are metamorphosed and silici¬fied limestone and shale. Sulfides and carbonaceous materials are negligible.The Pinson open-pit mine has operated since June 1980. It produces 1500 tpd of C.I.P. mill feed averaging .10 oz gold per ton, and 1500 tpd of heap leach material averaging .025 oz gold per ton. Cutoff grades are 0.04 for mill feed, and 0.01 for heap leaching. Stripping ratio is 9 tons of waste and leach grade to 1 ton of mill feed.The project is located in northern Nevada at 4900 feet above sea level.,Winters are fairly severe, with freezing conditions affecting operations from early December through April. Although officially designated as ""high-mountain desert"" country, snow and/or freezing rain occur almost every week of the winter.To date, all Pinson production-scale heap leaching has treated run-90,000 tons of ore are stacked on 300 foot square clay leach pads. Cyanide leach solution is applied through ""wobbler"" sprinklers at .0025 gpm/sq ft for 60 to 90 days. The pregnant solution flows from the heap by gravity to plastic-lined ditches, into a collection sump and then through buried piping to the 2.2 million gallon pregnant solution pond."

Experience with knowledge-based systems for Layout planning and roadway support dimensioning is on hand in European coal mining since 1985. The systems SOUT (support choice and dimensioning, 1989), SOUT 2, PLANANK (planning of bolt-support), EXOS (layout planning diagnosis. 1994), Sout 3 (1995) have been developed in close cooperation by CdF1. INERIS2. EMN3 (France) and RAG 4, DMT5, TH - Aachen6 (Germany); ISLSP (Integrated Software for Layout and support planning) development is in progress (completion scheduled for July 1996). This new software technology in combination with conventional programming systems. numerical models and existing databases turned out to be suited for setting-up an intelligent decision aid for layout and roadway support planning. Coal, as energy resource, possesses numerous characteristics and properties which all have an influence on its gasification behaviour. The two properties considered as critically important when evaluating a coal source for gasification is its mineral content and slagging behaviour. Research has indicated that slagging formation can be inhibited or even prevented by the addition of a fluxing agent. It is thus of great importance to understand the mineral interaction during gasification in order to select a suitable fluxing agent for the prevention of slagging and clinker formation in the gasifier. The aim of the present project is to evaluate the effect of iron as a fluxing agent and study the transformation of the mineral and added iron during gasification. A pre-determined amount of pure elemental iron (between 2wt% and 20wt%) was added to a base case coal sample in order to study the effect of the addition of iron to the coal. The transformation of the iron in conjunction with the possible iron containing minerals present in the coal was studied by means of Mössbauer analyses. Typical characterisation techniques included proximate analyses, ultimate analyses and ash composition analyses. The ash fusion temperature analyses (AFT) were used to study and predict the slagging behaviour of the iron-spiked coal samples. Even though AFT analyses only provide an average flow property, it gives a good indication of the changes that the iron addition induces on coal properties. FactSage modelling was carried out in conjunction with the Mössbauer and AFT analyses. From the proximate, ultimate and ash composition analyses it was clear that the coal used con-formed to the average characteristics measured over an extended time period. From the AFT values it was seen that an increase in the flow temperature occurred with the addition of pure elemental iron to the coal, which can be of importance for operational purposes as to raise the gasifier temperature and not to have slagging problems to occur in the gasifier. The Mössbauer data show that he-matite is the main Fe-component that forms from the pyrite originally present and from the added iron to the coal, consistent with FactSage modelling, which shows that the partial oxygen pressure determines which mineral species will form. This study opens up new possibilities when considering operational problems experienced in in-dustrial gasifiers. Successful completion of this study and a study to look at reducing conditions in the gasifier will also add to the knowledge that already exists regarding fluxing agents.

Protective canopies for conventional electric face equipment, including shuttle cars, operating in low coal (less than 48 inches) were designed, fabricated, installed and evaluated on in-mine machines engaged in regular coal mining operations. This work was performed under contract to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center. The canopies will support a vertical load of 18,000 pounds and provide protection against both roof falls and contact with the mine rib. Canopy configurations were established based on human engineering studies, full scale canopy mockups, and in-mine observation and consultation with mine and equipment manufacturing personnel. Overall height of each canopy is hydraulically adjustable between a minimum of 32 inches and a maximum of 40 inches. Canopy tops are open framework, welded structures, covered with expanded metal mesh. Structural members are 1 3/4-inch or 2-inch square tubing of AISI 413ON and ASTM A500 material, respectively. The canopy tops are typically supported by an understructure and upright post arrangement that is either integrated into the current operator platform or attached to the machine frame. The four upright corner posts house the hydraulic actuators. Canopy tops are elevated horizontally. Canopies are welded or bolted to the existing machines. Installation is accomplished with a minimal amount of interface modifications. No major machine design changes are required. Canopies were trial installed and load tested at the manufacturer's facility prior to installation on the in-mine machines. Canopies were installed on a Joy 14BU10 Loader, 16RB-3AH Cutter, and two 21SC Shuttle Cars, and a Galis 300 Roof Drill and 460-S Face Drill. Canopy installations were evaluated in the Jewell Ridge Coal Company No. 12 and Big Creek Tiller Mines. Operational time accumulated on the installations during evaluation ranged from 1 week to 14 weeks of two-shift operation. All five canopy designs, manufacture, and test were successfully accomplished. The five canopies met all safety requirements. Three of the five canopies were deemed to be completely successful from an operator's point of view. That is, mine management as well as the machine operator found that the canopies did not impede the operation of the machines to function with the same efficiency as before the installation of the canopies. The loader canopy, in fact, appeared to have provided a mole efficient operation of the loader by providing added safety to the operator from rib contact thus allowing him to concentrate more fully on the loading function. Operational problems were encountered with the shuttle car and the roof drill. The shuttle car canopy obstructed visibility to an objectionable amount and the roof drill canopy impeded maneuverability of the machine, more than doubling the roof bolting time.

"THE ECSTALL ZINC PLANT was built for the treatment of the Kidd Creek zinc sulphide concentrates. Construction proceeded throughout 1970-71, with operations beginning in April 1972. The two concentrate types treated differ principally in minor impurity and precious metal contents. Processing flexibility was required to allow efficient recovery of the by-products, especially cadmium, copper and silver. The conversion of the zinc sulphide concentrates to end products follows a sequence of operations that are common to most electrolytic zinc plants and typical of the ""Tainton- Jephson"" flowsheet.1. Roasting in air at an elevated temperature to convert the metal sulphides to soluble metal oxides (calcine) and sulphur dioxide. The sulphur dioxide is converted to sulphuric acid in a contad plant and shipped by train to market.2. Leaching of the calcine in spent electrolyte to effect extraction and recovery of zinc as zinc sulphate solution, leaving an insoluble residue.3. Purification of the clarified zinc sulphate solution by cementation with metallic zinc dust to remove impurities detrimental to the electro-deposition of zinc or detrimental to product purity. The solids from cementation are the starting materials for secondary metal recovery.4. Electrolysis of the purified zinc sulphate solution to reduce the zinc to the metallic state while coincidentally regenerating the sulphuric acid for recycle to the leaching step."

A computer program has been developed by Newmont Exploration to convert mineralogic data by XRD into rock type and ore type classifications. This method has proven useful in identifying lithology from cuttings samples, where percussion drilling was an alternative to expensive core drilling. Computer printouts of rock type and ore type identifications can be generated simultaneously with mineralogic analyses, resulting in a considerable time savings in manual calculation. XRD-computer logging was first applied to the Carlin mine in north central Nevada, and later to the Maggie Creek and Gold Quarry gold deposits, southeast of the Carlin mine. Impure Paleozoic limestones of the "lower plate" Roberts Mountain Formation and the "upper plate" transitional facies have been decarbonatized to altered siltstones and shaley units along vertical faults and permeable stratiform horizons. Advanced stages of decarbonatization were accompanied by silicification. Quantitative XRD data are initially sorted into principal rock type units (limestones, siltstones, dolostones, shales) based on major mineralogic components (calcite, quartz, dolomite, clays). On the basis of relative amounts of less major constituents, descriptive subclassifications (dolomitic limestones, dolomitic siltstones, argillaceous cherts) are made. XRD lithologic data provide assistance in correlating lithologic units, and delineating favorable replacement horizons associated with gold mineralization.

"RÉSUMÉ La lixiviation acide d’un minerai oxydé cupro-cobaltifère en milieu non réducteur et en milieu réducteur en utilisant le Fe2+ et le métabisulfite de sodium (SMBS) a été étudiée et les résultats ont été comparés. Les tests de lixiviation ont été effectués à température ambiante, dans une pulpe à 30 % solide, avec une vitesse d’agitation de 600 tr/min, un potentiel redox de 350 mV pour les tests en milieu réducteur, et un pH de 1,8. Les tests de lixiviation avec usage du SMBS comme réducteur ont donné la meilleure cinétique de lixiviation du cuivre. Pour le cobalt, c’est l’usage du Fe2+ qui a donné la meilleure cinétique de lixiviation. L’augmentation de la dose du fer dans la solution au-delà de 5 g/L a influencé négativement les rendements de lixiviation du cuivre et du cobalt. ABSTRACT Acid leaching of a copper-cobaltiferous oxide ore in a non-reducing environment and in a reducing environment using Fe2+ and sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) was studied and the results compa¬red. The leaching tests were performed at room temperature, in a 30% solids pulp, with a shaking speed of 600 rpm, a redox potential of 350 mV for the tests performed in the reducing environment, and a pH of 1.8. The leaching tests using the SMBS as a reducing agent produced the best copper leaching kinetics. As for cobalt, the best leaching kinetics was achieved using Fe2+. An increase in the amount of iron in the solution above 5 g/L negatively influenced copper and cobalt leaching yields. INTRODUCTION La République Démocratique du Congo (RDC) est un pays reconnu dans le monde pour son sous-sol qui regorge d’énormes quantités de cuivre et de cobalt (USGS, 2014; Palisade Research, 2016). La technique qui semble être la plus recommandée pour extraire à la fois le cuivre et le cobalt des minerais oxydés cupro-cobaltifères est la lixivia-tion acide en milieu réducteur. Cette technique est appliquée par la majorité des sociétés minières qui exploitent ces minerais dans l’ex-province du Katanga en RDC, à savoir: Tenke Fungurume Mining, Mutanda Mining, Kamoto Cop¬per Company, Sicomines, Gécamines, Boss Mining, Chemaf, Ruashi Mining et Somika. L’usage d’un agent réducteur est indispensable pour l’obtention d’un bon rendement de lixiviation du cobalt. En effet, plusieurs chercheurs s’accordent sur le fait que le cobalt trivalent de l’hétérogénite (CoO·2Co2O3·6H2O) est insoluble à l’action de l’acide seul; il ne devient soluble qu’après réduction en cobalt bivalent (Mwema, Mpoyo, & Kafumbila, 2002; Mulaba-Bafubiandi, Ndalamo, & Mamba, 2007; Ferron, 2008; Seo, Choi, Kim, & Tran, 2013; Stuurnam, Ndlovu, & Sibanda, 2014)."

This paper is a revision of Information Circular 7380, by D. Harrington and J. H. East, Jr., published in 1946, entitled ?Safe Storage, Handling, and Use of Commercial Explosives in Metal Mines, Nonmetallic Mines, and Quarries.? Issued soon after the close of World War II, this earlier circular described the unprecedented increase in the production and use of commercial explosives during the war as a result of expanded industry and the tremendous demand f or metals and minerals. In the years following World War II, the production and use of commercial explosives in the United States have continued to rise. Hence, the Bureau of Mines presents these revised figures through 1952. In rewriting this Wormation circular, most of the text prepared by Harrington and East has been retained, with newer statistical information compiled by Seth T. Reese, Accident Analysis Branch, and V. E. Wrenn, of the same branch.

ABSTRACT Hydrophobic polystyrene nanoparticles were evaluated as potential flotation collectors for pentlandite. The flotation of hydrophilic glass beads demonstrated the nanoparticles’ ability to induce flotation. Deposition of nanoparticles on glass surfaces increased the contact angle and enhanced adhesion of the beads to air bubbles. High flotation recoveries were achieved when 5–10% of the bead surfaces were covered with nanoparticles. Surface functionalization—the addition of vinylimidazole to polystyrene nanoparticle surfaces—caused the nanoparticles to selectively deposit onto pentlandite surfaces in the presence of Mg-Si slimes. This report summarizes a systematic 20-year study of the organic sulfur compounds in Wasson, Texas, crude oil and, to a lesser extent, of three other crude oils, that has culminated in some 200 individual sulfur-compound identifications. The development and application of special separation and identification techniques generally suitable for the characterization of sulfur compounds in any crude oil are discussed. This report reviews early sulfur literature covering petroleum sulfur compound identifications completed before this study was begun, and cites 58 papers resulting from this work. The sulfur compounds in petroleum, both as to type and quantity, have long been of concern to the petroleum industry, and such compositional data are not only of theoretical interest, but also of practical value.
