The assistance that can be gained by the use of aerial photographs in the geological examination of a mineral field is clearly illustrated by the results of a rapid reconnaissance survey of the newly-discovered Mount Fitton talc, deposits, situated in the north-eastern extension of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.The talc deposits were found to occur about the margins of a large lenticular mass of dolomitic marble, interbedded with hornfelsic tillites and fluvio-glacial sediments of Upper Pre-Cambrian age. Aerial photographs show clearly the extent of the dolomitic marble on which the growth of a species of eucalypt-Eucalyptus Gillei-is prominently developed, and which assists in defining the limits of this relatively light-coloured formation. (See Fig. 1).Upon field investigation it was found that the talc, deposits are related closely to the margin of the dolomitic marble where the latter has been subject to minor folding and faulting. The deposits themselves have been formed by metasomatic replacement of schistose dolomite. The contact of the dolomite with the underlying and overlying glacial beds is also noteworthy for the presence of minor occurrences of copper, silver, lead and zinc minerals.An examination of photographs covering a wide area reveals an outcrop of a massive granite to the north-east of the dolomitic marble, Fig. 2, which was almost certainly responsible for the regional metamorphism of the dolomitic and glacigene sediments, and the source of the mineralising solutions.All these features, as well as the broader structural features of the area, which are extremely important in the understanding of, individual commercial depQsits, were quickly determined with the assistance of the photographs.It is useful, briefly to relate the procedure adopted in examining this recently developed field as an example which may be well worth following on other fields, even if exposures are not so clearly defined. The method to be outlined, of course, will be of maximum advantage. Where rock exposures are good, where the ore bodies are likely to be widely spread, and where such bodies are related to some major geologi-cal control. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the resources, costs, capacities, market relationships, and short-and long-term supply of bauxite, alumina, and aluminum. The 45 evaluated mines and deposits in 14 market economy countries (MEC's) have a demonstrated resource of 8.4 billion mt of bauxite and an aluminum content of approximately 2.1 billion mt. Developed world bauxite resources and existing primary aluminum smelting and refining capacity are sufficient to satisfy demand through at least 1995, when additional properties (with higher cost levels) would need to be developed to satisfy future demand levels. It is anticipated that new alumina or aluminum production most likely would occur in developing regions with large bauxite potential, low-cost energy sources, and a close proximity to refining and/or smelting capacity. An increase in aluminum recycling capacity would help meet future demand increases. A series of network model supply analyses was performed for the period 1988 through 2000. Based on announced future production levels and assuming demand grows at the level outlined in the analyses, model results indicate there is sufficient material available to meet demand until 1998, where-upon an aluminum shortfall is projected. Additional analyses investigated the effect of a reduced growth rate of demand and regional production variations in Venezuela on the international aluminum industry.

Studies to enhance the FLSmidth forced air machine through changes in the design, showed important improvements through changes in the number of Rotor blades, stator designs, rotor air distribution and other designs features. The main outcomes from this study highlighted that increasing the number of rotor blades increased the selectivity while decreasing power requirements while stators with slots have better results in terms of recovery, flotation efficiency and selectivity than without slots.Also the rotor air distribution makes a difference in the design when comparing different distribution criteria whilst keeping all features of shape and number of blades etc constant. At the most efficient rotor air distribution design, copper recovery reached one of the highest values while keeping good selectivity. The possible explanation for that is the increase in the pump capacity indicated by the increase in the specific power.It was seen as significant that reduction in specific power for some designs tested compared with the then current standard design had an average of 30% less power consumption.As a result, FLSmidth was able to identify new designs that decreased power and improved recovery, as well as, identifying some designs that specifically improved fine and/or coarse particle recovery.CITATION:Silva, R, Caldwell, K, Bell, D, Olson, T and Vianna, S, 2013. Blasts should be designed so as to maximise the percentage of charges which shoot to a free face (Le, to a pronounced rock/air interface).Free faces should be rough, parallel and reasonably near to blastholes and, very importantly, concavely·biplanar relative to the charges (see Fig. 6b). The presence of biplanar free faces requires that each charge fragments and detaches its quota of the burden rock before the detonation of:1. later-firing adjacent charges in single-row blasts, and2. dependent charges in multi-row blasts.In multi-row blasts, biplanar faces are best achieved:1. by drilling blastholes on equilateral triangular grids,2. by selecting a VI, V2 or V3 initiation sequence, and3. by using down-the-hole delays.Biplanar faces start to be created only when the conventional value of effective blasthole spacing/effective burden distance (Se/Be) increases beyond about 2.4. Values of Se/Be less than about 2.4 result in planar free faces. Where biplanar faces are created, conventional values of Se/Be are invalid and appreciably greater than real values of Se/Be.

THIS note reports on a continuation of a program on the thermodynamics of Fe-S-X systems in the "steel-burning" temperature range begun by Bock, Barloga, and parlee.' Small coils of 0.039-in.-diameter pure iron (Ferrovac-E) wire were equilibrated with Fe-S-0 melts in ingot iron crucibles under argon at 1324°C in the assembly shown in Fig. 1, the lower part of which was heated in a large Globar furnace. Fig. 1 shows (R) the coiled iron wire sample, (M) the Fe-S-0 melt prepared from desired proportions of ferrous sulfide and ferric oxide, (K) the iron crucible, (I) a mullite guide tube, (J) an alumina crucible, (L) alundum sand, (N) crushed mullite, (Q) hollow cylinders of K30 brick, (C) a steel rod, (B), (El, (F), (G), (P), and (O), details of brass water-cooled head, and (H) a mullite tube 2-3/4 in. ID and 26 in. long. The rod (C) bearing the sample could be removed at will and be replaced by a tube for sampling the melt, or by a thermocouple for comparing the melt temperature with a control thermocouple not far from the 2-3/4-in. mullite tube. After equilibration the iron coils were treated with acid to remove the outer layer of metal and then they were analyzed for sulfur by a standard combustion method. The melt samples were analyzed for oxygen by a variation of Lander's2 hydrogen-reduction method for mattes, and for sulfur by the ASTM combustion-iodometric method NO. E 30-47. When the results of some forty-two runs were examined it was found that the sulfur and oxygen contents of the equilibrated melts showed good consistency, in that the plotted compositions fell along the smooth curve shown in Fig. 2. The points on this curve represent the experimental compositions of melts in equilibrium with ?-iron (Fe-S-0) solid solutions. These solid solutions are saturated with sulfur and oxygen with respect to the melt and therefore have the same sulfur and oxygen activities as the melt. The curve drawn through the points therefore delineates the ? liquidus. It falls in such a position as to roughly confirm the liquidus curves of Hilty and crafts3 at 1200" and 1300°C which are

The problem of ventilating an advancing drive which finally reached 5,550 ft from the fresh air base in rock with virgin temperature of 83°F was solved economically by the use of two 15 h.p. electric fans forcing ventilating air through 281/2 in. dia. fiexible polythene tubing of wall thickness 0·010 in. The saving in cost over conventional metal duct was estimated to be £3· 24 per ft of drive.INTRODUCTIONAs described by Dutton (1965) and Newton (1965) the existing 1,480' ft level drive at the South Mine, Broken Hill, was extended in two stages. The first extension was 3,790 ft, the face then being 4,790 ft from the fresh air inlet. Later, after a vertical ventilation connection was made 1,000 ft back from the face, the drive was extended a further 4,550 ft. The rate of face advance in both stages was about 15 ft per day (3 shifts of 5 ft), 5 days per week. Drive size was 8 ft by 9 ft 6 in. high.The Mines Inspection Act of New South Wales requires 6 hr shifts (instead of the normal 7 in Broken Hill) to be worked if the wet bulb temperature exceeds 80°F. Virgin rock temperature on the 1,480 ft level was 83°F. Inlet air temperature varied with seasons from 58 to 72,oF wet bulb.To adequately ventilate the face, a flow of air of about 11,000 c.f.m. was thought to be necessary.Re-entry time was about 75 min, being governed by the 7 hr length of shift (3 shifts per day) and travelling time.Blasting was permitted only at the end of the shift, in accordance with local industrial restrictions.

Since the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area, the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) has accelerated seismic upgrading of their bridges. Many structures can be improved with the simple addition of hinge seat restrainers. Others require modification of column bents and superstructure to column connections. Often, footing retrofits are necessary, which require the addition of tension/compression elements (compression piling and tiedowns anchors) to resist overturning moments substantially larger than those originally used for footing design. These footing retrofits may include doweled reinforced concrete footing extensions or new pile caps which transmit forces to either driven steel or drilled concrete piles. In some cases, installation of these traditional piling elements is expensive, impractical or impossible due to: low overhead clearance, ground obstructions, high water table, noise or vibration sensitivity, or the inability to laterally expand the existing plan dimensions of the footing. In the latter case, one practical option is to attach small diameter drilled and grouted tension/compression piling elements (Pin Piles) to the existing footing. The footing may be strengthened with dowels and added concrete thickness or there may be a reduced shear span due to the installation of larger or jacketed columns. A reduction of elements is available with a Pin Pile alternative, particularly when the selection of traditional standard piles is governed by the reduced tension/uplift capacity available from the traditional elements, since Pin Piles exhibit superior uplift performance.

El presente trabajo señala la geología, litología y mineralización del yacimiento minero El Tapado del distrito Yanacocha, situado al norte de Cajamarca. Este se encuentra conformado por diferentes depósitos auríferos epitermales de alta sulfuración, los cuales se desarrollan dentro de un vulcanismo calco-alcalino de composición andesítica a dacítica de edad Mioceno y son correlacionables con la Formación Porculla del Grupo Calipuy. La geología del depósito está conformada por rocas porfiríticas (intrusiones) y flujos piroclásticos tales como tufos de cristales, tufos líticos y brechas piroclásticas afectados por eventos eruptivos de brechas freáticas - freatomagmáticas. Todas estas rocas han sufrido posterior alteración hidrotermal con ensambles típicos de sistemas tipo ácido-sulfato. La mineralización económica está controlada por procesos hidrotermales y se encuentra asociada a sílice masiva y sílice vuggy ( 1-10 g/t Au y estructuras de hasta 136 g/t Au ) y en menor grado sílice alunita y sílice granular (moderada a baja ley).

The sphere of operations of dry crushing has been so much enlarged of late years that the following notes with reference to its advantages and limitations, and also some practical results in connection with the crushing of gold ores will probably be of service to the members of the Institute. Until recently, with one notable exception that of the Mt. Morgan Gold Mine, dry crushing has only been practiced to a very limited extent in Australasia, and elsewhere it might be said to belong to industries other than mining Its sphere of usefulness depends on the fact that the' product is delivered in a dry state without the separation of the finer particles from the coarser to any appreciable extent, thus enabling the following advantages to be achieved with different ores.

Pillars in underground limestone mines are required to support the overburden and provide a safe, stable working environment for mining personnel and equipment. Pillar stability was assessed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in underground limestone mines in the Eastern and Midwestern United States. It was found that current mine layouts have been successful in providing support to the overburden, while a small number of isolated pillar failures were observed. The stable pillar layouts and failed pillars were plotted on a chart that demonstrates the relationship between pillar width-to-height ratio and pillar stress. The results show that pillar failures occurred at the lower range of width-to-height ratios and can occur at relatively low stress levels. Zones indicating the potential risk of pillar instability are shown on the chart, based on hazards associated with the onset of rib spalling, large angular discontinuities and unconfined pillars. The chart can assist limestone mine planners to evaluate potential instability in current or new pillar layouts that are similar to those included on the stability chart.

Reliability of the liquefaction analysis is based on data plotted as by piezocone, as by deep vibrocompactation monitored tests. The negative porewater pressure, re lated to hydrostatic value, recorded by piezocone, is a good marker of the absen ce of the liquefaction. Systematic measures of the ground settlements, inside the vibroinfixed steel pipe, allow to locate the liquefable strata with loose density. Experimental study of the combined soil improvement by stone columns is carry out in particular in sea bed. The interaxis of the columns for the best efficiency is valued as of the vibrocompactation, as of the drainage effects, especially during earthquake.

The traditional method for training personnel in the mining and other heavy industries has been face-to-face, either via a lecturer in a classroom or through an apprenticeship. With the advent of applications tools such as video, computers, and the Internet, however, a much broader range of training delivery methods is available. Especially exciting are the broad capabilities of multimedia packages that combine the best features of numerous delivery methods. Applying multimedia environments in training holds great potential, especially when there is considerable difficulty in reconstructing real training environments. The authors discuss various delivery methods currently used in training employees, including perceived advantages and disadvantages of those methods. The authors then discuss and evaluate current computer-based training efforts of the mining industry and present an example of a multimedia training tool.

"The Navy initiated liquid propellant research in the early 1940's. The first promising Navy liquid propellant, Otto Fuel II, was developd in the early 1950 as a potential torpedo fuel. Later, the Navy developed a HAN based liquid propellant designated NOS-365, a hydroxylammonium nitrate, isopropylammonium nitrate and water formulation. A large gas volume generated by this propellant produced a large wake behind the torpedo. As one can readily understand, this negated the useof the propellant for this application. Recognizing the large gas volume as a desirable propulsion system for guns, the Navy embarked upon a gun propellant proqam. Utilizing a bulk loaded gun sysytem, the program failed when the gun was destroyed by the propellant detonating."

Keywords: Solvent extraction, dispersion, phase separation, CFD The liquid-liquid dispersion phases are separated by gravity in a solvent extraction settler. This separation step is made more effective by picket fences. The picket fence geometry and its physical placement have a significant effect on the separation process, because the purpose of a fence is to smoothen and control organic-aqueous dispersion flow in the first part of the settler and achieve a deep and dense dispersion layer in the front end of the settler resulting in a clean phase separation. In this study, physical phenomena in the solvent extraction process and phase separation in a solvent extraction settler with and without picket fences have been examined using a commercial CFX software package. It can be concluded that the used CFD-approach proved to be a complementary tool for optimizing and designing the solvent extraction settler.

"The annual budget for the repair and maintenance of equipment at Syncrude Canada Ltd. is in excess of $450 million. Of this amount, a significant portion can be attributed to the loss of material on various pieces of equipment throughout the operation. In order to effectively battle the different wear and corrosion mechanisms that lead to material loss, it is important to understand how materials behave in the environments in which they are used. Through the work carried out at Syncrude, and work conducted with various external collaborators, significant improvements in both equipment reliability and productivity have been achieved. This paper will review some recent field trials where materials research has demonstrated the potential for significant improvements in equipment run life and reduced maintenance costs. These field trials will demonstrate the need for understanding the interaction between various damage mechanisms and the materials used in different services. The paper will also discuss current areas of focus along with future directions for further work. IntroductionSyncrude Canada Ltd, located in northern Alberta, Canada, operates a mining, extraction, and upgrading facility that removes bitumen from oil sand to produce synthetic crude oil. Oil sand is mined from the orebody using conventional open pit mining techniques. Recently, the mining scheme has changed from a dragline/bucketwheel/conveyor system to a shovel/truck/crusher/hydrotransport operation as depicted in Figure 1. Since the start of production in 1978, the identification, development and application of wear protection has been an ongoing challenge due to the abrasive nature of the oil sands and the massive volumes of materials that are moved. The use of various materials and application processes along with component design modifications has resulted in significant improvements in both productivity and reliability (Adamic et al., 1995; Llewellyn, 1996, 1997; Anderson et al., 1998; Chiovelli et al., 1998).In an effort to continuously improve the operation, Syncrude has been quick to adopt new wear technologies. As seen in Figure 2, since the start of operation, a variety of materials have been used to increase wear performance and ultimately equipment reliability and availability. Although Figure 2 does not show a time axis, the bottom axis may also be used to represent a time progression for the predominate use of these materials at Syncrude. Tungsten carbide metal matrix composite (WC-MMC) overlays are currently the materials of choice for most of Syncrude’s critical production applications. Metal matrix composite overlay technology has potential for significant improvements and Syncrude is actively working with powder consumable manufacturers to advance this technology."

Field studies of the radiations backscattered by iron ores from a 60Co source of primary gamma radiation located in a borehole logging probe have confirmed thatthe P" factor, a ratio of high energy gamma ray intensities to low energy intensities in selected energy windows of the backscattered gamma-ray spectrum, is a valuable measure of grade for sedimentary iron ores of the Pilbararegion of Western Australia.Laboratory studies of model boreholes have shown that variations in borehole diameter and variations in bulk density of the formations have a significant influence on the measurement of P" ratios. If these influences 'are taken into account the mean ore grade in a new blast hole, for instance, can be predicted with a probe of suitable configuration to within 0·8 per cent Fe at the 95 per cent confidence level, while the grade of a single 120-cm split can be determined to within 2·6 per cent Fe. These results were obtained by pooling data from five blast holes covering the range of iron concentrations 20-68 per cent Fe and apply to the mean hole grades 54-68 per cent Fe.Results for two development holes were generally comparable to those obtained from individual blast holes95 per cent confidence limits of ±0·9 per cent Fe for mean ore grade and ± 4·1 per cent Fe for single splits. A greater number of data points is needed before these confidence limits can be further improved.The technique utilized to obtain these results was derived from a "multiband" approach to collection of backscattered spectral intensity data, an approach which permitted selection at the data processing stage of the most statistically significant P" ratios for the type of mineralization encountered in the field. The multiband technique also permitted selection of the most significant of another set of windows in the backscattered gammarayspectrum to measure a newly developed "S-factor", a ratio sensitive to borehole diameter. Another window provided information on bulk density. All these measurements were made with a single pass of the same loggingprobe.
