A uniquely mineralized area extends from northwestern Canada through Alaska into eastern Siberia. Some of the metals found there are relatively rare in the conterminous United Stales. Among these are cobalt, the platinum-group metals, and chromite. Geologic evidence suggests that cobalt and the platinum-group metals may be present in deposits that could constitute nationally important reserves. Chromite in potentially minable deposits is known, but it may be relatively less abundant. Limited reserves of these metals have been delineated, but most of the favorable terranes and reported occurrences throughout the vast expanse of Alaska remain unexplored. As part of the mineral studies mandated under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, the Bureau of Mines' Alaska Field Operations Center and the Bureau's research centers at Albany, Oreg., and Reno, Nev., are cooperating in a long- range program to investigate occurrences and delineate reserves of cobalt, the platinum-group metals, and chromite in Alaska. Studies of other critical and strategic minerals will be phased in during succeeding years, as ongoing projects are completed. This first in a series of annual reports summarizes available information about deposits and past production of cobalt, the platinum-group metals, and chromite, and describes current and planned Bureau investigations of these minerals.

This paper shares the experience of the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) Field Surveillance Branch over the past few years in building relationships with Aboriginal communities. Our goal is to provide and encourage best practices that may benefit you and your organization and result in strong, mutually beneficial relationships with a focus on Aboriginal communities. Historical information provides insight that aids in establishing effective working relationships with Aboriginal communities. An important component is appreciation of the perspective of these communities, which is achieved through awareness training. The use of local Aboriginal resource people as part of the training is recommended. A plan that is supported by management and staff is essential and lays the foundation for successful relationships. However, the plan must be flexible enough to change as circumstances warrant. The concept of having local people in communities address local issues is essential. This ?grass roots? approach, combined with the goal of exceeding a community?s expectations with respect to addressing issues, will go a long way to establish trust and credibility. Measuring the effectiveness of this work is the final building block to complete the picture.

The Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP), operated by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (the Districts), treats wastewater generated by over3 million people and processes wastewater solids generated by over 5 million people. The JWPCP Tunnel and Ocean Outfall Project, if constructed, would be one of the major marine outfall projects in the world. The new tunnel and ocean outfall system would provide relief to the existing outfall and allow inspection, maintenance, and repair of the existing tunnel and outfall system, portions of which were constructed as early as the 1930s. Geologic conditions are challenging along the alignments within the study are a being considered. Conditions include saturated alluvial soils, weak sedimentary rock, mixed face conditions, and squeezing ground conditions. Other significant challenges include the potentials for encountering up to 11 bars of water pressure, crossing seismically active faults, and encountering gassy and contaminated ground conditions. This paper discusses the details of the proposed project and the associated challenges.

Over the last few years as the coal industry has seen an increase in the price of coal, a renewed interest in the additional mining of pre-law highwall sites has occurred. Much premium coal and property remains behind these pre-law highwalls but access to mining is limited because prior mining used auger machines to remove coal from under the highwall. Older augers seldom reached more than 200 feet and often no more than 100 feet but this zone of auger holes destabilizes the highwall to where additional mining is often unsafe. If the reserve is large enough, the highwall can be stabilized with common flyash and cement grouts to form a face-up for an underground mine but this expensive method is usually not practical for continuous use with a highwall mining machine. It is estimated there are hundreds of miles of highwall riddled with auger holes where the coal reserve available is ill-suited for deep mining for a variety of reasons. However, these same properties are ideal for additional mining with state-of-the-art highwall mining machines that have a reach up to 1200 feet, except to the relatively thin auger mined de-stabilized zone. The renewed interest in highwall mining these properties has driven research into finding an economical way to stabilize the highwall so the highwall mining machine can recover additional coal. This research discovered and fine-tuned a process that is economical and is successfully supporting the highwall at a highwall mining operation. This paper discusses the research involved in determining the strengths need, the methodology used to place any grouts, the effect on mining plans and the increased recoveries. ARMPS-HWM is used extensively in this research. The failure of the highwall, when not grouting, and the success, when grouting using the new materials and equipment utilized, confirmed the ARMPS-HWM method.

In order that the use of continuous mining machines be most economic, the equipment must be operated at rated capacity as much of the time as possible and downtime for repairs kept at a minimum. A large factor influencing any proposals for maintenance programs is the complexity of the machines—often the intricacies of the precision-built equipment requires engineering knowledge byond the scope of mine maintenance personnel. A training program is part of the answer; there are others. In addition to investigating a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program, Mountaineer Coal Co. has launched a detailed preventive maintenance program to combat extensive downtime often encountered when continuous miners are used. Everyone in the coal industry knows the importance of operating continuous miners at their rated capacity as much of the time as possible. The potential capacity of the miner is such that l-min. delay means from 3 to 8 tons of coal lost. Today's miner is a well designed, precision-built machine, complicated with hydraulic and electrical equipment and complex mechanical assemblies with all possible combinations of gears, levers, and rods. As the machine becomes more complex, the problem of maintenance becomes more acute. The transition from conventional to continuous mining has taken place so rapidly that the mine mechanic has been unable to keep pace. When there is a machine failure, the maintenance man usually employs either the trial-and-error or the play -it-by-ear method of repair, but this represents an expensive proposition. Mine mechanics, maintenance superintendents, and mine managers complain about the complexity of the machines and how difficult it is to keep them running. There is no shortage of skill in the design offices. Machines are designed by good engineers, but for engineers. What's the answer? Better trained maintenance men—better maintenance instruction—better field service. These are all good corrective measures, but the real cure is to provide for the men at the do it level. Designers have got to cooperate with men to simplify maintenance on the increasingly complex machine. The designer must be aware of how his machine can be maintained. Sometimes a simple design change in a bearing, oil seal, or a bushing will correct recurrent breakdowns. Parts such as filters, hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and pivot pins can be better arranged on the machine to make them accessible so that the mine mechanic can easily keep the machine producing. Therefore, to get our maintenance off on the right foot, the program must begin back in the design office, before the machine is delivered to the mine property. Realizing the importance of this aspect, our company set out on a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program. This is a formal program in which quarterly reports are written covering machine defects, design weakness, and general problems relating to machine maintenance and performance. The manufacturer in turn comments on each and every item appearing in these reports, indicating the action he proposes to take. In addition to the written reply, meetings are scheduled with manufacturer representatives to discuss further the outlined problems. The benefits realized from this organized program are both substantial and far reaching. Good maintenance begins with a good design. The subject of preventive maintenance is not a new one. Volumes have already been written on the subject. It consists primarily of doing the maintenance work when you want to rather than when the machine demands it. However, a preventive maintenance program can be overdone. Theoretically, if carried to ridiculous extreme, all working time could be spent inspecting and repairing the machines and no time would be left for production output. Our goal in maintenance is to maximize running time for all machines, and to prevent or at least minimize production downtime. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Block caving is a distinct caving method applied mostly to large, massive, ore bodies because of its in¬herent low cost and high production capabilities. Areas of sufficient size are removed by undercutting so that the mass above will cave naturally. Drawing of the caved ore at the bottom of the ore column causes the caving action to continue upward until all of the ore above the undercut level is broken into sizes suitable for handling. When properly applied, block caving results in a lower mining cost per ton than any other under¬ground method. There are three distinct forms: (1) dividing the horizontal area into rectangular or preferably square or nearly square blocks, drawing evenly over the entire area to maintain an approximately horizontal plane of con¬tact between broken ore and caved capping; (2) divid¬ing the horizontal area into panels across the ore body, retreating by undercutting manageable areas from one end of the panel to the other and maintaining an in¬clined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping (thus the name panel caving); and (3) no division of horizontal area of the ore body into defi¬nite blocks or panels (this is termed mass caving). Undercutting may be from wall to wall, retreating from one end of the ore body to the other, maintaining an inclined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping. The total active caved area is deter¬mined by the size of block that will not produce undue stress on workings below the undercutting level and by total production requirements. This type of operation is also referred to as panel caving at some properties. SUITABLE ORE BODIES Block caving in its various forms is applicable to deposits of various shapes and ores of various strengths. Its success is governed by rigid requirements and limi¬tations. In unsuitable deposits or where improperly em¬ployed, the loss of ore may exceed that of any other mining method. Good planning, systematic work pro¬cedures, careful supervision, and good judgment con¬tribute to its success. Ore Characteristics Included as a necessary characteristic in an ore body suited to a successful block-caving operation is a proper fracture pattern. Ore hardness should be another gov¬erning factor, and the toughness or softness of the ore should be considered. There must be sufficient horizon¬tal area available for expansion of the undercut, if neces¬sary, to start the caving process. Large, massive, ore bodies usually meet these conditions. Veinlike deposits must be wide and dip rather steeply to conform to the block-caving limitations. The capping must be of such a nature as to cave when the underlying ore is being removed since the weight of the overburden aids in crushing the ore. The most favorable capping character¬istic is that it breaks into coarse pieces and resists attrition as the block is drawn. Soft capping, by breaking into fine pieces and sifting into the ore or channeling through the ore to the drawpoints, can seriously dilute the ore and hinder the extraction of clean ore from the blocks. Types of Ore In block caving, a fairly uniform distribution of val¬ues in the ore is necessary. Grade values may range from low grade to high grade, but most often the sys¬tem is applied to low-grade ores. Wide veins, thick beds, or massive deposits of homogeneous ore overlain by ground which will cave constitute suitable ore bodies. The ore must be such that it can be supported while blocks are being developed and undercut but breaks up readily when caved. Some applications include porphyry copper, disseminated molybdenite, hematite in the Lake Superior iron district, limonite deposits in northern Spain, the diamond mines of South Africa, asbestos and nickel in Canada, and massive magnetite in Pennsylvania. Size and Shape Outline of the ore body should be fairly regular, and the sides of the ore body should dip steeply. It may not be economical to mine small portions of ore extending into the walls of the deposit, and low-grade inclusions in the ore cannot be left unmined. Some dilution of the ore, as mining progresses, by low-grade or barren cap¬ping is inevitable and, unavoidably, some clean ore is left between drawpoints. Determining Cavability The use of rock mechanics is sometimes advantageous in helping to determine the cavability of an ore deposit. The US Bureau of Mines has information and testing ability which can assist in determining the cavability of ore types. Several competent consulting orga¬nizations knowledgeable in rock mechanics can also as¬sist in evaluating the cavability of an ore body. Some recent work has been done to better define the cavability index of various ore bodies; an example of how this was determined is discussed by McMahon and Kendrick (1969). The intensity of the fracture pattern is a critical parameter to be analyzed. The question to be answered is, "How intense must the fracture pattern be?" Table 1 is a tabulation of the size of rock fragments that appear at the drawpoint of various block-cave mines around the world. These are indicative of the fracture-pattern spac¬ing and, as can be seen, they vary substantially from the almost sandy material at the Mather mine to fairly sizable blocks at the Grace mine. Several sets of fractures are essential to promote good caving. Ideally, two vertical sets at nearly right angles to each other and a third set nearly horizontal are required to insure a good caving ore body. Loading explosives up hole has challenges that are typically not seen in down hole explosive loading. Most explosives applications are not up hole. Lack of experience and technology can cause significant problems when loading explosives up hole. When results aren’t achieved, the blame is commonly put on the design when the true problems are unknown. Not knowing the cause of the problem causes drill and blast designs to be over engineered and very costly with little success. Being able to know and record key data is crucial to actually solving the problem. This paper goes over blast instrumentation that can be used to trouble shoot drill and blast problems in up hole explosives loading in underground mines. The tools and procedures used to trouble shoot include velocity of detonation recorder, borehole tracking, seismographs, and borehole camera. Each item will be discussed in detail with a case study to show the usefulness of the instrumentation. The operation discussed in the case study had issues pulling raises and had hang ups in the stope shots. These problems caused production slowdowns and costly remediation blasting that was not very successful. The case study is an underground gold mine that used modified sub-level caving with backfill as the mining method.

To provide technology that can help decrease the dependence of the U.S. aluminum industry on imported bauxite, the main ore of aluminum, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the extraction of aluminum from abundant domestic reserves of kaolinitic clay. Miniplant studies of the continuous leaching of calcined kaolin with boiling 25-pct HC1 acid resulted in a 93- to 99-pct extraction of the acid-soluble alumina in the calcined kaolin feed. Data are presented for an acid leaching study carried out in three or four continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR) in series, feed rates of 100 to 250 lb/hr of calcined kaolin, and total nominal residence times of 0.7 to 2.3 hr. A material balance for a 176-lb/hr calcined kaolin feed rate in a circuit consisting of three reactors, four classifiers, and five thickeners is given. Data provide detailed compositional and physical information for calcined kaolin, process liquors, and acid-leached residue solids.

A case study on foundation engineering through organic soils is presented. Located along the west shore of the Hudson River, site soils consist of random brick fill over a thick layer of peat and organic silts or clays. The organic layer is underlain by medium dense to dense sand with varying amounts of silt. Strong artesian pressures were measured in the sand. A pile foundation system was selected to support all structures. To avoid periodic flooding, new fill must be placed on the existing fill. Large total and differential settlements will occur due to consolidation and secondary compression of the organic soils. This settlement will reduce the allowable pile capacity due to the large negative skin friction in the organic layer; and will necessitate long-term maintenance of the final grade elevation. Pile load tests were performed to determine the allowable compression and uplift capacities, long-term capacities and pile driving criteria.

"The chemistry of electrolyte systems containing iron remains generally poorly understood despite their prevalence in many natural and industrial processes, particularly in hydrometallurgy. These systems are typically challenging to study and model due to their affinity for complex formation and precipitation even at low pH. Recent developments in the hydrometallurgical processing of nickel laterites at Anglo American have called for a deeper understanding of the fundamental chemistry of the Fe2(SO4)3–FeSO4–H2SO4–H2O system. This paper details the development of an internally consistent, Pitzer ion-interaction model of this system, with explicit recognition of important contact ion pairs (CIPs). The primary application of this model is a thermodynamic framework for the interpretation of kinetic processes occurring during iron(III) reduction with SO2. Adopting a rigorous thermodynamic basis for the system chemistry facilitates the formulation of simple rate expressions that are capable of inherently capturing complex effects. While the iron(III) reduction case study remains the focus of this work, the developments have more universal applications and the thermodynamic speciation model can be extended into other systems containing acidic ferric sulfate.INTRODUCTIONIron is present in nearly all hydrometallurgical refining circuits typically as both a necessary and unwanted impurity and needs to be removed and disposed in a safe and efficient manner. This is generally performed by precipitation to form a range of solids such as hematite, goethite or jarosite. Numerous studies in the open literature have focussed on the removal of iron from refractory gold sulfide ore (Berezowsky & Weir, 1989; Berezowsky et al., 1991) and zinc pressure leaching (Buban, 1999; Ismael, 2003), and PGM matte sulfide circuits (Dutrizac & Monhemius, 1986). Moreover, since ferric iron is a strong oxidizing agent, it has been used extensively as a leaching agent for sulfide minerals (Dreisinger, 2006). Given the outlook of challenging economic conditions, declining ore grades and increasing levels of impurities, effective iron management is going to become increasingly critical to all hydrometallurgical processes.Against this background, and considering the widespread importance of acidic iron sulfate systems throughout natural and industrial processes, it is unexpected that the knowledge of the fundamental solution chemistry of these systems contains such significant gaps, particularly at the conditions typically found in hydrometallurgical applications. Existing literature describing the measurement and modelling of solution speciation in these systems have highlighted their significant chemical complexity (Magini & Caminiti, 1977; Magini, 1979; Lee & Tavlarides, 1985; Stipp, 1990; Papangelakis et al., 1994; Gil et al., 1995; Majzlan & Myneni, 2005; Kormanyos et al., 2008; Yue et al., 2014). Partially responsible for the lack of quantitative speciation measurements is the strong tendency of ferric to hydrolyse at even low pH (Flynn, 1984), complicating the laboratory study of such systems. Moreover, the large number of aqueous species that may co-exist simultaneously makes the study of individual species and the modelling of the numerous interactions between these species extremely difficult (Dry & Bryson, 1988; Stipp, 1990; Majzlan & Myeni, 2005; Kobylin et al., 2007)."

Companies are searching for ways to increase knowledge transfer and learning, particularly among people who work on related topics. This will improve efficiency and quality and reduce redundancy and costs.

The theme of the 2012 North American Tunneling conference (NAT) was ?Tunneling: Driving Value.? This theme best reflects where the tunneling and underground construction industry is to-day. Major advances that have been made in technologies have provided tremendous improvements in productivity, which, in turn, have allowed the industry to deliver more cost-effective and less disruptive solutions to the nation?s infrastructure needs. Despite a weak economy, domestically and globally, cities and states continue to spend billions on infrastructure improvements. For the underground construction industry, that means more transportation and water, wastewater, storm water projects and other underground structures. And, for each project completed, underground construction and tunneling technology grows. The NAT conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME, provides an outlet for technology transfers among professionals. This year?s conference, held in Indianapolis, IN June 24-27, attracted 918 attendees, up from 803 at the last NAT in 2010. The accompanying exhibit also featured 116 exhibitors occupying 140 booths. That was up from 108 booths in 2010. So, the meeting continues to grow as underground construction professionals throughout the world seek to learn from their peers.

A procedure was required for the rapid determination of silicon in low-alloy irons and a suitable method used the formation and reduction of silicomolybdic acid at 50°C. The procedure gives results for elemental silicon and this enables the correct computation of oxidation requirements in basic oxygen steelmaking. The method could be useful in iron foundries which have not installed direct reading spectrometers.INTRODUCTIONOxygen steelmaking experiments required rapid determinations of 0,5-1,6 per cent silicon in iron (3-4 per cent C) within 10 min of sampling; a reproducibility better than ±0.03 per cent Si was desired. Only elemental silicon (Si°) is of interest as a fuel in basic oxygen steelmaking technology, and the proposed procedure determines exclusively this form of silicon. The method is described as it may prove useful to other workers although the interference study would be incomplete for some applications.The analysis of silicon in iron is frequently obtained using direct reading spectrometers, but for the proposed experiments the spectrometers could not be used because of the prohibitive distance from the furnace. It should be noted that spectrometers determine both the elemental silicon and that present as silicon dioxide in occluded slag and inclusions.The silicon content of iron and steel is determined in this laboratory by spectrophotometric measurement of a "molybdenum blue" colour. Wardrop Engineering and the Placer Dome?s Campbell Mine Design Team utilized leading edge directional raise boring techniques and an innovative, remote controlled application of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete ground support to achieve improved mine ventilation and a superior, safety focused secondary emergency egress. While more standardized methods may have provided a sufficient solution to either the requirement for a ventilation raise or for a traditional escape ladder way, innovative methodology ensured both objectives were met with a single, enhanced solution. Placer Dome committed to provide a solution that minimized energy consumption, optimized air delivery and facilitated an escape way focused on minimizing the negative physiological aspects associated with mine evacuation. The project was successful in providing a new airway, returning 47 m3/s (100,000 cfm) from the 39 Level to 30 Level, minimizing risk to the raise equipping crew and providing a fully equipped escape hoist. The resulting secure escape environment provided an efficient means of evacuating personnel working at depth without necessitating a potentially dangerous exhausting climb to surface. The project has substantiated, that optimized safety focused design can be achieved without jeopardizing project economics.

Minera Poderosa S.A., específicamente en el rol que desempeñan los Círculos de Mejoramiento Continuo (CMC´s) como un vehículo efectivo para alcanzar los objetivos de la empresa. Los CMC´s están integrados por trabajadores de un mismo proceso, a quienes se capacita en el manejo de herramientas, técnicas y metodologías de la calidad, con la finalidad de realizar mejoras en los procesos. En ese sentido, en la compañía minera La Poderosa, la administración es participativa y el directorio difunde las políticas, para lograr la rentabilidad de la empresa. Así también, los mandos medios definen los objetivos y estrategias, desplegándola en cascada a la supervisión y estos a su vez, al personal de línea. Este concatenamiento de responsabilidades y la participación de los CMC´s aseguran el alineamiento y control de la gestión.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of Best Practice Principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned.The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95 per cent passing 2 mm and the design allowed for a single cutter primary Vezin sampler, increments taken from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals, whilst filling a tanker for the pneumatic offload at our base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from our smelting complex and the input to our refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ‘interleaved’ fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks.The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum is the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs and stock levels for all our operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February every year, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). A trend was developing in the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter (sender) showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock and the base metal refinery (receiver) showed that their theoretical stock increased against their physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results, that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream.This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the respective sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were analysed again, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period.From these investigations, it was found that airflows present inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias and a change in sampling protocol was introduced as well as physical changes to the sampling equipment were made to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period which followed, after a phased upgrading process, showed that the accounting between our smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below five per cent relative to theoretical stock).CITATION:Kruger, C J and le Roux, E, 2017. Mineralisation processes in epithermal deposits in the North Island of New Zealand are best illustrated by considering the two most productive deposits: Waihi and the Thames Bonanza Zone (TBZ), which have different mineralogies and ore shoots geometries. These two deposits can be taken as typical of certain styles of epithermal deposits worldwide, and recognition of their differences can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value. Waihi, the major economic producer in the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ), has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a vertical interval of 600 m which consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, base metal sulphides and electrum. They are found in the foot wall of earlier quartz veins which contain quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite and adularia. The Thames Bonanza Zone which was the second biggest producer in the CVZ has discrete near-vertical ore shoots over 300 m vertically, which consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, electrum and in their upper parts barite, that are enclosed in veins of quartz.   The gold mineralisation in both deposits is considered to be a co-precipitate with pyrite, with that at Waihi produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system. That at the TBZ was produced by mixing a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow proximal to the system's upflow.
