Most mines in the Bundamba, North Ipswich, and Rosewood districts of the West Moreton coalfield of south eastern Queensland have installed washing plants during the last five years. Many problems were encountered in their installation, including the small size of washing plant required in many cases, the economical minimum ash content under present and future market requirements, production from a one-product washbox of large and small coal of quality to satisfy both markets, measures to avoid adding unnecessary moisture to the washed slack coals, and excessive middlings in some coals or soft clay in others.INTRODUCTIONIt was fortunate for Brisbane, which was to become the capital of a new State, Queensland, in 1859, and grow into a city of over half a million people by the time of its centenary, that coal was found in abundance almost on its doorstep near Ipswich, the first mine being opened at Redbank in 1843. This was followed by the opening of many more mines in that district and, some 40 years later, in the nearby Rosewood district where high-volatile gas coal was produced (Fig. 1). These discoveries ensured a supply of reasonably priced coal (currently about 85/- per ton delivered) in Brisbane, but the quality is inferior to that of other coals mined in Queensland beyond economic range of Brisbane.Various factors led to an increase in the average ash content of the West Moreton coals during and after the war. Between 1940 and 1952 the gasworks coals rose in average ash from 13 8 per cent to 23·9 per cent and the powerhouse coals from 17·1 per cent to 27·1 per cent. This drift was arrested by the installation of 28 screening and picking plants from 1952 onward, but it became obvious that mechanical cleaning of the coals was essential due to the competitive market for coal and the worsening quality of reserves.

The Morobe Goldfield inPapua New Guinea has produced in excess of 120 tonnes of gold from predominantly alluvial sources. Hardrock gold has been mined historically at Wau (23 t) and Edie Creek (4 t) and geological resources have been established at Hidden Valley (78 t), Kerimenge (36 t) and Hamata (30 t).Numerous prospects have also been identified within the goldfield. Primary gold mineralisation is related to intrusion of dacitic to andesitic Edie Porphyry (2.4 to 3.8 Ma), often with associated diatremes, which have intruded along major regional structures. A full spectrum of deposit styles from proximal (mesothermal) to distal (epithermal) to the porphyry source is recognised. The transition between the proximal and distal styles is recognised both between deposits and within an individual deposit. The deposit styles should be termed porphyry related gold mineralisation rather than given the generic epithermal and mesothermal labels.   It is proposed that magmatic fluids which evolved from parent melts to the high level Edie porphyry stocks mixed with convecting meteoric fluids and were channelled along major structure and diatreme contacts. Proximal to the intrusives, gold mineralisation is associated with deposition of pyrite-hematite-quartz+/-magnetite-gold (Hamata) and pyritebasemetals-quartz-gold (Wau). The mineralising fluids were hot, and periodically saline due to pulses of magmatic fluid. Gold is non-refractory and occurs as 20 to 30 micron blebs within the pyrite.   More distal from the intrusives or under late cooler conditions, mixing of cool dilute meteoric and magmatic fluids resulted in gold deposition associated with arsenic rich pyrite-and arsenopyrite-mineralisation (Kerimenge, Hamata and Edie Creek). Gold is refractory and occurs within the sulfides either as sub-micron inclusion or within the lattice.   CO2 and H2S gases which evolved off the upwelling hydrothermal fluids as a result of boiling and pressure reductions, condensed within superficial groundwater and formed cool oxygenated bicarbonate fluids. These fluids percolated back down the structures depositing manganocarbonate in the upper parts of the hydrothermal system. At deeper levels in the system mixing of the descending bicarbonate fluid with upwelling mineralised fluids deposited manganocarbonate-quartz-sulfides nonrefractory gold (Hidden Valley, Wau and Edie Creek).   At Kerimenge the cool bicarbonate fluids have also quenched a late stage magmatic fluid rising along high permeability structures. The quenching has resulted in deposition of non-refractory gold mineralisation associated with hessite (Ag2Te)-tennantite-chalcopyrite deposition.   Within the Morobe Goldfield, a transition from deeper level pyrite-quartz+/-hematite-magnetite to intermediate level quartz sulfide and quartz-carbonate-sulfide deposition to upper level, massive manganocarbonate deposition is recognized. Gold mineralisation can occur within all levels up the system.

"GENERAL STATEMENTThe purpose of this report, which is the first of a series of three covering mines in the Fairmont district of West Virginia, is to give the result of a' study conducted in seal mines to ascertain the nature of the safeguards employed to prevent injury to the workmen from falls of roof and coal. In presenting the subject matter, consideration must necessarily be given to factors, features, and conditions such as method of mining, timber regulations and practices, supervision and natural conditions; and, for comparative purposes, a certain amount of statistical matter bearing upon the relation of fatalities and injuries to their causes, tonnage produced, men employed, days worked, and time lost.Those features and practices found to promote safe protection are summarized and suggestions made for such additional safeguards and practices as appear to give greater protection against injury from falls of roof or coal.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis study of falls of roof and coal in mines in Harrison County has been conducted by the U. In the early stages of opening up a mine, when there is some uncertainty as to its future career, necessitating caution in laying out works of a permanent character, the want is often felt of an assay furnace, easily built and easy of transportation, should the" mine " prove to be " no mine." Again, cases occur in which parties buy the right to treat comparatively small heaps of tailings, and then shift their plant to other localities. Under these circumstances it is necessary to restrict the plant to the barest necessaries, to suit, so to speak, the nomadic character of the work.An assay furnace that is really portable, easily transported, erected, taken down, of little weight, always ready for action on short notice, is indeed in these cases a desideratum which has long been wished for. The gasoline furnaces introduced intothe Australian market some time since practically fulfil these conditions; but they have the fatal drawback of being dependent on a constant supply of the liquid fuel, gasoline, which is seldom, if ever, obtainable locally in' any wayback mining township...

In 1998 the Matanuska-Susitna Borough formed the new port district at Point MacKenzie, known as Port MacKenzie, located directly across the Knik Arm from Anchorage. In 1991 PND Engineers Inc. (PND), working with the Matanuska-Susitna Borough manager and port director, envisioned a fill structure at Port MacKenzie with a 500-foot-long Open Cell? sheet-pile bulkhead face extending to EL -20 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) at the face. Now under operation the fill created 5.5 acres of tideland property using local materials for fill. The fill is protected from 2- to-3 foot-thick ice pans and 9 feet per second (fps) tidal currents by an envelope of armor rock. Construction required working in water with 30 to 40 feet of tidal variation. Construction required placement of frozen fill in water depths possibly exceeding 50 feet, creating real concerns about soil consolidation and long-term maintenance issues. A plan was prepared to consolidate the soils using Vibracompaction. Soil Density and consolidation were monitored during the work. In 2003 the port district and NPI, a wood chip export company, formalized an agreement to construct a deep water port facility at Port MacKenzie for cape-class bulk carriers. PND provided planning, studies, geotechnical investigation, design documents and construction inspection for a 500-foot-long trestle with a platform dockhead and dolphins providing 1,100 feet of dock face in EL -70 MLLW as shown in Figure 1. Design included installation of large-diameter spin-fin piles driven on a 2V:1H batter. Also included was a 300-ton tension test of smaller spin-fin piles.

The Illawarra District, from 50 to 100 miles south of Sydney, is one of the State's important coalfields. It extends from Clifton on the north, to the Shoalhaven river on the south, and from the coast westward beyond the coastal scarp.For descriptive purposes, this area falls naturally into two zones:(a) the coastal belt backed-by the eastern edge of the plateau;(b) the plateau, westerly from the coastal scarp.(a) The Coastal Belt.A triangular shaped area extending from Clifton to the Shoalhaven river, composed for the most part of soft coal measures strata of Permian age, which, on weathering, undermines the massive overlying Mesozoic sandstones and causes the gradual recession of thecliffs.South of Wollongong, upper marine sediments and contemporaneous igneous rocks make their appearance beneath the coal measure beds and occupy the greater portion of the coastal belt.(b) Plateau Area.Extending westerly from the coastal escarpment is a plateau known as the Robertson Tableland, composed of Triassic sandstone and shales dipping gently in a northerly direction, and capped in places by Wianamatta. shales and r.rertiary basalts. This tableland is approximately 2400 feet above sea level in the vicinity of Robertson, and gradually falls to about 750 feet at Waterfall.The plateau area for the most part is highly dissected, rough, steep gorges alternate with sharp ridges.A large part of the northern watershed of the Robertson tableland is a reserve for Sydney water supply, and large dams have been constructed at Cataract, Avon, Burke, and Cordeaux.

The separation of rare earth elements is a complex process that is industrially carried out using liquid/liquid extraction. Detailed flow sheets of solvent extraction plants for the separation of rare earth elements are rarely available in the literature which limits the opportunity to teach and test the application of data reconciliation, process optimization and control to these types of plants. The basis of a simulator for a rare earth elements separation plant is described in this paper. The simulator is used to adjust the organic phase and stripping acid flow rate in a separation circuit of heavy rare earth elements from light one?s.

Despite low commodity prices and mining industry cutbacks throughout the world, Peru remains one of the industry’s bright spots. The country’s remarkable economic turnaround during the 1990s remains a model for other developing nations to follow. And the Peruvian government has not forgotten the industry that was instrumental in that turnaround. True, the country has not been spared the effects of the mining industry’s retrenchment that has occurred in other parts of the world. However, foreign mining companies remain committed to doing business in Peru. And the government remains committed to attracting foreign investment and maintaining a strong mining industry. This commitment was evident in September 1999during the 24th Convention of the Institutos de Ingenieros de Minas del Peru in Arequipa, Peru. More than 3,000 mining industry professionals from around the world attended the convention. And Extemin, the accompanying exhibit, featured more than 450 companies, many from the United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa and other countries.

Indonesia has enormous mineral resources. Its population of more than 180 million people inhabit most of the more than 13,000 islands. The country is becoming a significant economic power in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world. Java, its largest island, is the most densely populated area. The country's diversity is its strength. However, as only an estimated 16 million inhabitants speak bahasa Indonesia as the first language, communication problems endure. Although burdened with large debts, Indonesia has been able to service the debts better than most developing nations. This has given it high credibility and, with increasing frequency, creditor nations compete to provide Indonesia loans with the most the most favorable financial terms. Recent rising prices of petroleum crude has further improved Indonesia's economic status. It maintains a policy of stable oil prices that it promotes in OPEC, of which it is an influential member. As a result, Indonesia is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign investors. The South East Consortium for International Development (SECID) is made up of 34 universities in the southeastern US and Indonesian partners Lembaga Afiliasi Penelitian dan Industri (LAPI) of the Institute of Technology in Bandung, West Java. SECID bid successfully against international competition to develop new academic programs and campus for the Sriwijaya University UNSRI) in Palembang, South Sumara. The engineering profession generally does not accept vibro-driven piles as bearing piles unless their capacities can be verified by restriking with an impact hammer, which significantly reduces the economic benefits of vibratory driving. In part, the concern for capacity development in piles driven by vibration arises out of observations that vibro-driven piles do not develop capacities equivalent to those driven by impact (e. g., Mosher, 1987). Nonetheless, if capacities are predictable, vibratory installation may be more cost effective than installation by impact, due to savings in time of installation, even if capacities are lower than those of impact-driven piles. Throughout the past few decades, a number of attempts have been made to develop capacity prediction methods for vibro-driven piles, mostly along the same lines as methods for impact-driven piles. That is, (1) totally empirical formulae, (2) power balance / power transfer formulae, and (3) "time domain-nonlinear" (TDN) computational procedures such as the wave equation. Some of the formulae have been based partly on field experience, but the majority have been developed from simple theoretical models with parameters evaluated from laboratory studies. Neither these formulae nor the TDN solutions have been systematically checked (or modified) by recording appropriate field data over a variety of site

Historically, the processing function has been regarded as efficiently managed as long as production costs were kept low, recovery was adequate and sufficient plant capacity was avail-able. In this paradigm, processing is viewed as capable of making only a limited contribution to a company?s competitive advantage. However, the processing function can provide a primary vehicle for building critical competitive capabilities. Processing organizations should be encouraged to become so accomplished they generate new opportunities for other functional groups and thereby influence a company?s overall strategy. This requires a deep shift in processing?s role, in its self-image and in the expectations of it held by managers in other functions. Specific plant improvement techniques ? total productive maintenance (TPM), loss control, etc. ? should be viewed primarily as means for building strategically valuable processing capabilities. Different improvement strategies create different kinds of capabilities and present new strategic options. Broadly speaking, a mineral-producing company seeks competitive advantage through two principal activities: the development of new mineral production and reserves and the optimization of existing operations. These lead to increases in ore reserves, production levels and cash flows that are manifested in increased profitability and, hopefully, increases in the price of the firm?s stock. The profitability of a minerals company is a function of the overall profitability of the industry sector in which the company participates and the firm?s competitive position within that sector relative to those of its competitors. Competitive advantage within the industry comes from two sources: the ability to maintain lower prices than competitors for the same product (cost leadership), or from the sale of products with unique properties that justify higher prices (product differentiation; Porter, 1980). Most mineral companies produce fungible commodities that are sold to anonymous customers, and sustainable cost advantage is the only long-run strategy available to these companies to enhance profitability.

In the coal preparation plant at U.S. Steel Corp.'s Concord mine in Alabama, the product moisture was reduced from about 20% to 9% through the development of a workable flowsheet for dying the clean coal. Some of the high points of the conversion of the Concord washer from vibrating screen dewatering to centrifuge drying are presented in this article. The coal preparation plant at the United States Steel Corp.'s Concord mine near Bessemer, Ala., began operations in June, 1950. The basic cleaning circuit consisted of a Chance cone for cleaning the 2-in. x 3/8-in. fraction and concentrating tables for cleaning the -3/8-in. coal fraction. Dewatering of the final product was accomplished with 35-mesh vibrating screens. However, because Concord coal is very friable with 85% passing 3 mesh and 25% passing 28 mesh (Fig. I), a considerable quantity of fines passed through the dewatering screens. To recover these fines, the dewatering screen effluent was sent to two 70-ft-diam hyd rose para tors from which the underflow returned to the dewatering screens and the overflow went to a 175-ft-diam thickener for water clarification, as illustrated in Fig. 2. As might be expected, there was considerable recirculation of the -35-mesh coal in this system. This degraded the coal and led to higher moistures. It also resulted in a fines bleed-off of plant water and thickener underflow to a fine-coal settling pond. In 1961, vacuum filters were installed to supplement the screens and to recover the fine coal lost in the bleed-off. The above system resulted in a product moisture of about 20%. Further reduction to approximately 11% was accomplished by drainage from railroad cars during transit to the coke plant. Control of the moisture at unloading was poor because of variations in operating levels and railroad car availability, but since the Concord coal constituted a relatively small percentage of the over-all coal mix at the coke plant, its high moisture and fluctuations did not seriously hamper coking operations. Early in 1964, however, the proportion of Concord coal was increased with a resulting increase in the moisture of the total coal mix, and this caused difficulties in the coke plant. The increased participation of Concord coal also brought about a shortage of railroad cars which raised the moisture content to a point where the coal became almost impossible to handle. In an effort to alleviate this problem, U.S. Steel initiated a research program to develop a flowsheet for reducing the moisture to approximately 10% and to determine whether the resulting product would be satisfactory for the coke plant. Under this program, an experimental flowsheet for evaluating both a vibratory centrifuge system and a solid bowl centrifuge system was drawn up as shown in Fig. 3. A horizontal vibratory centrifuge was installed to reduce the moisture in the dewatered coarse coal, and a four-cell, flotation machine was installed to clean the -65-mesh portion of the 3/8-in. x 0 table raw coal feed. Several shortcomings in the above circuits were apparent. For one thing, large quantities of repulping water were required. Furthermore, since about half of the flotation feed was of a size consist that could have been cleaned on the tables, these circuits would result in an unnecessary increase in reagent costs and facilities. The combustible volatile matter in coal mine roadway dusts (CVM) has been determined using x-ray backscatter techniques. The correlation between x-ray and chemical techniques is reasonably good for the 92 samples from collieries on the Bulli seam, and the maximum error expected at the maximum level of 11· 5 weight per cent CVM permitted in the N.S.W. Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended, is about ± 2·5 weight per cent. This x-ray technique can be used only when the combustible volatile content of the coal matter (cvm) varies within a limited range, and a separate calibration is required for each coal seam.Portable equipment based on a radioisotope x-ray source ahd digital ratemeter makes possible simple and rapid analysis, and with adaptation to use in coal mines should lead to much more comprehensive testing- ofroadways and hence improved overall prevention of coal dust explosions.

Due to the difficulties of ventilating large opening stone mines, the effective dilution of diesel particulate matter and noxious gases has often been problematic. Since stone mines have large openings that develop low air resistances, and propeller fans are designed for low pressure-high volume applications, main mine propeller fans may be a feasible option for ventilating underground stone mines. This paper describes the results of a case study where researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have demonstrated that significant increases in total mine airflow can be achieved and the ventilation improved in a large-opening stone mine by replacing an axial-vane mine fan with two 12-ft diameter propeller fans and adding a line of stoppings. In this study, the use of the propeller fans more than doubled the air quantity from 300,000 cfm to 750,000 cfm, while operating at 50 horsepower less than the original axial-vane fan.

Komatsu America International has introduced two new hydraulic excavators. They can work in congested and confined areas. The tight tail swing radius of the PC128US-2 and PC22-8USLC-2 enables the excavators to minimize the work space. The units can operate in confined work settings that are inaccessible or counterproductive to traditional machines. Even the door is designed for tight working conditions. A convex door slides open along the exterior curve of the cab, rather than swinging out on hinges past tracks. And the excavators’ tight tail swing design allows them to load within the track width of the machine.

The fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) mining model has significant implications for the industry as it plays an important role in fulfilling the economic, social and workforce needs of the contemporary mining industry. It has increasingly been adopted in countries such as Canada and Australia, but is the current nature of the FIFO model challenging the place women have achieved in the mining workforce? Research in the mining and oil and gas industries reveals that major sources of stress for fly-in-fly-out mining workers are the times of parting and of reunion, the challenges in defining roles within the family, parenting, and conflict between spouses over the use of the leave time and money. So how are women in the industry coping with the FIFO schedules and consequent intermittent relationship with families and partners? How is the mining industry adapting to recruit and maintain female employees in FIFO operations? This paper describes an exploratory study conducted in Canada, which intended to provide some initial insights that might help us answer the questions above. There are several inferences made from this exploratory study. It is clear that FIFO poses significant challenges for both female and male workers. It is largely seen as rigid, extremely challenging for employees with young families and workers who are single mothers, and it is generally incompatible with starting a family and caring for small children. FIFO creates severe stress on relationships and on workers psychological well-being. It seems to be indeed harder for women, since they are often in lower paying positions and therefore have less financial reward for the FIFO lifestyle. On the other hand, FIFO creates the opportunity for young women, including Aboriginal women, to jump-start their careers, as well as opportunities for mature women to work while pursuing other personal interests during their time off. This paper concludes with recommendations to improve the FIFO system in order to increase the ability of mining companies to hire and retain women

As mining continues toward deeper reserves in thick western US coal fields, the control of mining induced-seismicity has become a priority in many operations in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. Gradual floor heave, common in many coal mines, has historically not been a safety issue. However recent occurrences of sudden floor heave accompanied with seismicity in a few deep mines have fueled this investigation. The focus is to identify and study the mechanisms resulting in sudden heaving of the mine floor in western U.S. deep coal mines through analytical calculations and back analyses of an actual event in a cooperative mine. Based on review of available data in three mines, underground observations and back analyses of an actual event, the authors have identified the following contributing factors (1) presence of stiff stratigraphic units and thick seams mined at depths exceeding 1000-ft (2) presence of geological discontinuities reducing the in-situ strength of the coal with calculated factor of safety near 1 for the mine floor (3) mining approaching areas of higher than normal stress gradient associated with previous mining or structural anomalies or surface topographic highs and (4) an additional source of energy triggering sudden failure such as periodic caving or slip along geological discontinuities. Preliminary examination of seismic data for the actual event in the cooperative mine and underground observations excluded fault slip at the mining horizon as the triggering mechanism but highlighted the significance of weak, anisotropic strata conditions near the intersection of two faults.

Reconnaissance geochemical exploration in the vicinity of low angle detachment faults which bound the core of the Paparoa metamorphic core complex yielded Au up to 14 ppm, with 35% of greywacke, granitoid and quartz vein samples in the northern range exceeding the 0.01 ppm detection limit. Au is associated with Ag, As, Sb and Cu anomalies consistent with epithermal-type mineralisation. The Ag and Cu anomalies also distinguish this mineralisation from older, mesothermal Au deposits widespread in the Ordovician 'slate belt' greywackes, which comprise much of the upper plate of the core complex. Baryte, molybdenite, fluorite and stratiform U mineralisation in the northernPaparoa Range may also be related to hydrothermal activity along the detachment fault zones.

"A number of technologies are in practice for selectively removing coarse gold from conventional grinding circuits. These circuits are often designed so that the grinding mill output is size classified, with large (or high density) particles being removed before the tails are returned to the mill. Because of the high relative SG of gold, and the fact that some forms of gold such as free gold do not break apart during conventional grinding, coarse gold can accumulate in the circulating load, and eventually be lost.Eriez has developed a flotation cell that uses fluidized water to enhance flotation of coarse particles. More than 40 units have been sold in industrial minerals, and we are now exploring applications for the HydroFloat® in the gold industry.Mineros S.A currently produces approximately 120,000 oz of gold per year by gravity concentrating alluvial gold ore with a mean particle size of 330 microns, followed by further concentration using a Falcon separator. A 400 mm diameter pilot-scale HydroFloat® was added to the tails of the Falcon to test whether additional gold could be captured. Enrichments of 50-600 times and recoveries normally in excess of 95% were achieved. This allowed direct smelting of the gold concentrate. Metallurgical results and operating parameters such as water addition and power will be discussed during the presentation.This result opens the possibility that the HydroFloat® could be used directly in the grinding circuit, for removing coarse gold in the circulating load. This work also shows the possibility that the HydroFloat® can produce a throwaway tail, which will reduce the size of the circulating load stream and the grinding requirements of the circuit."

This report concerns cooperative milling investigations of the Central mill of the Eagle-Picher Mining &. Smelting Co, The work carried on at the Central mill and the Rolla, Station shows that: It is possible to reduce the Central mill heavy-medium plant tailings by 0.05 to .15 percent zinc; the 3/16-inch to 10-mesh fraction of the jig feed can be treated by sink-float to obtain a tailing containing only half as much zinc as the jig tailing; Humphreys spiral concentration of the flotation tailing does not recover enough zinc to be economically attractive; and crushing and wet grinding of ferrosilicon for heavy medium are commercially feasible. The Eagle-Picher Co. operates extensive mines in the Tri-State area of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The ore is milled at its Central hill, which also accepts custom ores. During the recent war the mill handled about 12,-000 tong- of low-grade ore per day. The company milled about 50 percent of the district tonnage and purchased nearly 90 percent of the custom ore. About 50 percent of the mill feed was from company mines. Zinc is the chief value in the Tri-State ores,-with Varying quantities of lead and cadmium minerals, as well as small amounts of germanium and gallium.
