"Float coal dust is produced by various mining methods, carried by ventilating air and deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. If deposited float dust is re-entrained during a methane explosion, without sufficient inert rock dust quantities, this float coal dust can propagate an explosion throughout mining entries. Consequently, controlling float coal dust is of critical interest to mining operations. Rock dusting—adding inert material to airway surfaces—is the main control technique currently utilized by the coal mining industry to reduce the float coal dust explosion hazard. To assist the industry in reducing this hazard, NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) initiated a project to investigate methods and technologies to reduce float coal dust in underground coal mines through prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Field characterization studies were performed to determine quantitatively the sources, types, and amounts of dust produced during various coal mining processes. The operations chosen for study were a continuous miner section, a longwall section, and a coal handling facility. For each of these operations, the primary dust sources were confirmed to be the continuous mining machine, longwall shearer, and conveyor belt transfer points, respectively. Respirable and total airborne float dust samples were collected and analyzed for each operation and the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust was calculated. During the continuous mining process, the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ranged from 10.3 to 13.8. The ratios measured on the longwall face were between 18.5 and 21.5. The total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ratio observed during belt transport ranged between 7.5 and 21.8. INTRODUCTION During the extraction of coal, various dusts are produced that can be classified into two categories of interest: respirable and float coal dust. Respirable dust (diameter 10.0 = µm) has the capability to penetrate beyond the terminal bronchioles and become deeply embedded into the human lungs, leading towards respiratory disease complications (Potts et al., 1990). Float coal dust is defined as coal dust having a diameter less than 74 µm (Harris et al., 2009). During the mining process, float coal dust can be deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. With the proper mixture of methane gas (between 5% and 15%) and an ignition source, a methane gas explosion can occur (Barker and Humphreys, 1996). The resulting explosion can develop a pressure wave which lifts the deposited float coal dust material into the air, propagating a disastrous coal mine explosion (Harris et al., 2010). The current technique to safeguard against the propagation of a coal mine explosion is to treat the mine airways with incombustible rock dust (typically limestone), maintaining an 80% total incombustible content of the deposited material. NIOSH initiated a project to investigate control technologies that could be aimed at reducing the amount of float coal dust allowed to deposit in the mine airways using three approaches: prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Reducing the float coal dust being generated during the mining processes and capturing or suppressing airborne float coal dust prior to deposition would in turn increase the efficiency of the applied rock dust used to prevent mine explosions."

In 2003, a high-temperature pressure leaching circuit to treat copper sulfide concentrates was commissioned at the copper/molybdenum operation at Bagdad, AZ. In late 2007, a medium-temperature pressure leaching circuit was commissioned at the Morenci mine in Arizona. The Morenci circuit was shut down in mid-2008, following a fire in the autoclave circuit. The onset of the global financial crisis in late 2008 resulted in significant changes to the operating profile in the Southwestern United States with respect to concentrates production, concentrates treatment, acid production and acid consumption. As a result of these changes, the Morenci concentrator was shut down, and the pressure leaching circuit remained offline. In late 2014, the increasing acid requirements in the Southwestern United States prompted a reevaluation of the Morenci concentrate leaching facilities. As a result, the pressure leaching circuit was restarted in high-temperature (200 °C) mode in May 2015 and has operated successfully for three years since recommissioning. This paper describes the current pressure leaching circuit configuration and the factors leading to the successful application of copper sulfide concentrate leaching at this location.

For sulfide minerals, the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase is an influencing factor for separation by flotation. Klassen and Mokrousov(I:217l distinguish three stages of oxygen adsorption; namely, reversible adsorption, activated adsorption and, finally, surface oxidation. While contraversial, limited adsorption of oxygen is believed to improve the interfacial reactivity between collector and mineral. Intensive surface oxidation of sulfide minerals usually results in unsatisfactory flotation with collectors of the xanthate type. The influence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase has received consideration for sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcocite, and covellite(2,3,4,5,6). However, the nature of surface oxidation products of sulfide minerals has received very limited investigation(6,7). Lightly oxidized galena promotes the adsorptive reaction of surfactant (xanthate or dixanthogen). Tolun and Kitchener(8) state that limited interaction occurs between galena and xanthate under relatively reducing conditions. And, that exposure to oxygen raises the electrochemical potential of the galena to that required for reaction with xanthate or dixanthogen. In the latter condition, the galena has an "effective flotation surface". On the other hand, intensive oxidation of galena reduces the chemical reaction with xanthate collectors (9) . Complete flotation with xanthate-type surfactants with increasing oxygen content in the water phase has been determined to have the following sulfide mineral sequence(3): galena, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and arseno-pyrite. The work of Cusack(4) suggests that some threshold amount of oxygen is necessary for flotation to occur, but heavy oxidation hinders flotation with xanthates. According to Tolun and Kitchener(8) catalytic oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen occurs. In being asked to present this paper on the improvements in loading and hauling equipment and the effect on unit costs, Mr. Van De Water, your program chairman, stated that his reason for coming to a contractor was due to the wide experience of, and I quote: "a large contracting firm using a variety of equipment on varying types of earth moving jobs." We people in Utah Construction Company are flattered that Mr. Van De Water singled out our Company for this assignment. Utah Construction Company's participation in open pit mine stripping antedates the 1920's, when overburden was being removed from copper ore in Bingham Canyon, Utah. Our first stripping con¬tract for the Copper Company was finished in 1912. Since that early beginning, Utah has, as a contractor, been engaged to strip and mine iron ore properties, coal properties, copper properties, uranium properties, phosphate,-gypsum, limestone and dolomite properties. And, as you know, the Company has become a major producer of iron ore from Company-owned open pit mines. Utah Construction Company has been instrumental in the evolution of open pit mining tools. Some of the first tools were the old wood and coal fired stream shovels which had to be fired hours before a shift started to insure a full head of steam, providing power to excavate with the then large 1-1/2 cubic yard buckets. Today, Utah's strip mining is done, with 18 cubic yard and 10 cubic yard crawler shovels. Yesterday's horse and mule drawn, iron wheeled wagons, with 1 and 2 cubic yard capacity, which were hand dumped by removing the false bottom, one 2 x 4 at a time, have been replaced by today's- 50-ton capacity, hydraulic, rear dump trucks and giant 40-ton coal haulers. Utah Construction Company used the early fresnes and wheeled scrapers which were horse and mule drawn. Often, an operator holding too tightly to a handle was thrown into his horses when a hard spot turned the scraper, a contrast with today's 20 and 25 cubic yard, self-powered diesel and diesel electric Gargantuan rigs; with power controls that relieve the operator of practically all physical work. This Company has pioneered many of today's advances in equipment with shop made prototypes, features of which were adopted and elaborated upon by equipment manufacturers.

Semi-autogenous, (SAG), milling operations can realize substantial Increases in mill throughput by removing and crushing critical size, slow grinding, material from the SAG mill. Full-scale plant testwork showed that modifying the Kidston SAG/ball circuit to a semi-autogenous-ball milling-crushing (SABC) circuit would increase plant throughput by 25 to 30%. The methods used to determine the value of the SABC circuit and the design of the circuit are discussed.

Pressure losses in mine ventilation systems are estimated using friction factors and shock loss factors. The efficient planning and designing ofmine ventilation systems depend on the accuracy of the friction factors as well as the shock loss factors that are taken into consideration. While there is a much more acceptable knowledge of what constitutes friction loss in mine roadways, the shock loss factors are in general readily not available for all possible contexts of flow separation phenomena in mines. One such special case of shock loss in mines is the train of mine cars in the airway. Mine cars are widely used for the transportation of material, and the information on shock loss factor for mine cars is limited. This paper examines the pressure loss occurring due to a train of mine cars in an airway using scale model studies and numerical investigations. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) studies are conducted using four different turbulence models. The performance of different turbulence models is analyzed by comparing it with the experimental results. The study suggests that the boundary layer resolution method is significant in the simulation of shock loss. From the study, it is found that the shock loss factors from presently available model overestimate the pressure loss by 7 to 15 times. A better prediction model for the shock loss factor of a train of mine cars in the airway is proposed using the experimental results.

"Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust. Not only does quartz have many valuable industrial applications, it is also one of the most concentrated gangue minerals encountered in the processing of other minerals. Minerals such as hematite, apatite, calcite, feldspar, barite, and many more. Numerous applications of industrial minerals are sensitive to the hardness and abrasiveness encountered with quartz minerals, while other applications may lead to processing challenges for the end user. Therefore, process and chemistry optimization must be applied to ensure optimal grade is obtained for these valued industrial minerals. Extensive studies have been conducted in processing various industrial minerals, thus achieving a range of quality specifications, which entailed the application of ArrMaz’s CustoFloat and CustAmine collectors towards the separation of quartz from other minerals. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals often have the misfortune of the gangue mineral being very similar in surface charge, and coordination properties, to that of the mineral of interest. An example is seen in phosphate beneficiation, when dolomite can be a gangue minerals (Table 1). Therefore, the development of processing reagents are quite complicated. Some minerals, like clays, may be washed away. However, most require the manipulation of the pH, in efforts to fine tune the system to the narrow difference in isoelectric points of the different minerals, as well as the knowledge, and resources that are necessary to exploit the differences to yield and an optimal grade/recovery. In some cases, the application of a depressant may be required, such as the phosphoric acid commonly applied to achieve the optimal balance of grade/recovery for phosphate from a mineral with elevated concentrations of dolomite (Wang, 2016), or the application of hydrofluoric acid to assist in producing feldspar product from a mineral rich in quartz (Heyes, 2012).ArrMaz's CustoFloat and CustAmine product lines have successfully been applied to the processing of industrial minerals for more than 50 years. Applications include, but not limited to phosphate, sand (glass, foundry & high purity quartz), clays (feldspar, kaolin, etc.), and many carbonaceous and sulfate minerals. The successes of these 50 years are largely due to ArrMaz's ability to tailor make the processing chemistries to fit the ever changing and declining mineral feed grade and variations in water quality (Moore, 2015; Moore, 2016). This technical knowledge of mineral processing is strongly complimented by the intimate service programs in place at many of the beneficiation plants."

The environmental status of underground mining operations is critical to the health and safety of the miners; particularly in a large mine, the multitude of interacting parameters that can favorably or adversely affect the environ-mental status makes the manpower requirement of the routine checking of specific areas and conditions a formidable one. While the concept of environmental monitoring for miners has been considered for some time, until recently the availability of sensors to reliably measure the parameters of interest severely limited the utility of such systems. The status of sensors for mine use and the evaluation of environmental monitoring systems is reviewed.

Phelps Dodge’s Candelaria copper-gold mine is located 20 km (12miles) south of Copiapó in northern Chile’s Atacama province (Region III) (Fig. 1). The Candelaria Mine is about 800 km (500miles) north of Santiago and 75 km (47 miles) east of the Pacific Ocean. Its elevation is 600 m (1,970 ft) above sea level. The Copiapó River Valley is 6 km (4 miles) northeast of the mine site. It is the only major source of water in this arid region. The average rainfall is 14mm/a (0.5 in./year). During 1995, the mine produced 521.4 kt (574,800 st) of copper concentrate containing 150 kt (165,000 st) of salable copper and 3 t (98,800 oz) of gold. The 1995 unit cash cost was less than 50 cents/lb of copper. This makes Candelaria one the world’s lowest cost copper producers.

"INTRODUCTION Abstract Tankhouse iron control through application of new treatment technology to mitigate conventional bleeding losses is considered. Implementation is discussed and the treatment economics explored. A representative case is assessed. Treatment benefits and application drivers for specific scenarios are noted. Background Hydrometallurgical ore processing has become a significant metal extraction/production avenue in recent decades. In copper mining; the focus for this examination, around 25% of global primary copper production and nearly 50% of US production result from various hydrothermal leaching extraction approaches coupled to Solvent Extraction/Electrowinning (SX/EW) metal production. Generally such processing is favored over pyrometallurgical processes for lower ore grades and as such is finding growing use and is expected to remain a key processing route looking forward with average world-wide ore grades falling as known ore reserves become exhausted. Target Problem And Motivation In hydrometallurgical processing the production circuit may be thought of as a chain of interlocked recirculation loops (Figure 1). Leaching dissolves the target metal from the ore along with other ore components which contaminate the Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS). Iron is a common component in copper ores and, as a result, occurs fairly ubiquitously in copper Pregnant Leach Solutions (PLS) generated by leaching. Leached components migrate through the production circuit from left to right (Figure 1) through a net combination of chemical and mechanical transport mechanisms. Selectivity at the recirculation loop interfaces tends to retard rejected component migration through the production process. As a result, overall relative contaminant migration fluxes are slower than the target metal (copper) and the contaminants tend to build up relative to copper in the more upstream portions of the processing circuit over time with iron often being a significant contaminant. Further, while copper is continuously removed from the system in appreciable amounts, little contaminant exit occurs and the absolute contaminant amounts and concentrations also increase throughout the EW circuit over time."

The presence of high-grade massive sulphides near York Harbour, Newfoundland has been known since the turn of the century. In the early 1900's a small, massive-sulphide deposit was worked by conventional hand methods and yielded about 100, 000 tons of high grade copper-zinc ore. Since that time, a number of mining companies have held options on the property and an exploration adit was driven along the fourth level of the original mine. Underground drilling revealed several additional massive sulphide lenses in the range of 10, 000 to 60, 000 tons (Fig. 1). The problem facing Long Lac Mineral Exploration Ltd. when they undertook an option on the property in 1969, was to outline any possible extensions to the known sulphide lenses which were outside the reach of underground drills and to search for new ore deposits which might double the known reserves into a feasible project for development. GEOLOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: The geology is typical of many massive sulphide deposits within volcanic rocks in the Canadian Shield. The sulphide pods appear to occur along a complex andesite-basalt contact. Identification of the two volcanic types is difficult since they are almost the same colour. The most direct means of identification is by the slight difference in their magnetic susceptibilities. Pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite are the main minerals in the sul¬phide lenses. The ore is massive, differing in density from the host rock by at least 1.0 gm/cc. There is little pyrrhotite or magnetite associated with the sulphides, so there is no appreciable difference in magnetic susceptibility between the sulphides and the basalt. A mining company plans to extend its surface coal-mining operations in central Pennsylvania. Although the proposed site contains pyritic material, the results of the acid-base accountings for the site shows an overall Neutralization Potential to Maximum Potential Acidity Ratio (NP:MPA) of 4.26:1 for the entire site. The pyritic material is, however, associated with the lower of the three seams to be mined. If traditional dragline-mining methods are used, this would result in the acidic material being placed at the top of the spoil piles, exposing it to air and water, and therefore to the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD). Further concerns are associated with the fact that the alkaline material is not distributed evenly over the mine site. To prevent the formation of AMD, the company has proposed to mine the area using truck-shovel mining methods. This technique offers a more flexible alternative for cut sequencing and for the selective placement of waste material. Working with the Department of Mineral Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, amine plan was developed for this site. This plan results in the layering of the alkaline and acidic spoil to achieve an overall net alkalinity in all spoil areas. Therefore, mining this site should not result in the formation of AMD.

Caterpillar recently held two, two-day demonstration programs for its mining customers. The event, billed as MineDemo by Caterpillar, consisted of two sessions held on consecutive weeks at the company's Tinaja Hills proving ground south of Tucson, AZ. The program included several classroom sessions that focused on Caterpillar equipment applications, including the VIMS (vital information management system) and the CAES (computer-aided earthmoving system). Also included were field demonstrations and the opportunity to test drive mining-related heavy equipment, including dozers, trucks, graders, shovels and loaders. Featured at the event were the recently upgraded 785, 789 and 793 C-Series trucks. Caterpillar recently announced the availability of the 136-t (150-st) 785C and the 177-t (195-st) 789C. The upgraded haulers have replaced the respective B-Series models. The 218-t (240-st) 793C was introduced in 1996. It, too, has been upgraded but retains the C-Series designation. While attending the press event, the author had the opportunity to test drive the 793C at the Tinaja Hills test site. It was amazing how well the machine handled. The operation was smooth and the braking system was precise. The cab was extremely comfortable. To see a C-Series truck in action, the author also visited Newmont Mining's Mesquite Mine, located in Cali¬fornia, across the border from Yuma, AZ. The Mesquite Mine operates a new model 785C truck. At the mine, temperatures have been measured as high as 58° C (138° F) in the pit. Needless to say, the ability to operate dependably in extreme heat is an important consideration for the mine operators. An interview with the driver and later with management confirmed that the 785C has worked out well. The driver praised the comfort of the cab and the ease of operation. Management reported significant fuel savings and was impressed by the truck's maintenance features.

The North Auckland Line (NAL) in Northland, New Zealand, is being upgraded to pass Hi-Cube containers. The line includes many tunnels and bridges which need to be refurbished to improve structural clearances and line capacity. Tunnel 2 along the line, the Makarau Tunnel, has posed special challenges. Opened in 1898, the tunnel suffered multiple collapses during construction and has shown significant distortion during operation. The tunnel has been repaired many times since opening. Successfully enlarging this delicate and distressed structure has involved historical research, advanced analysis and design, and careful construction. The results provide lessons for dealing with brick lined tunnels and poor ground conditions

"As an extension of the work on the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems, the effect of Cl-, Br-, I- and CN- on cations such as Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu+, Cu2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ and Sn2+ has been examined in detail. The Newton-Raphson technique has been used to determine the amounts of various metal species as a function of the concentration of anions. Some practical implications of various metal complexes in metal separation and removal from solutions have been examined and discussed.IntroductionUnderstanding the role of anions in hydrometallurgical processes often determines the success of an operation. The successful choice of concentration and type of anions not only leads to an effective extraction and removal of metals (Esmaeili et al., 2005; Brbooti et al., 2011; Wei et al., 2005; Jeppesen et al., 2009; Al-Tarazi et al., 2004), but also to assisting effective separation of various metals, whether it is a solvent extraction, ion exchange operation or even a simple precipitation (Farha et al., 2011; Sevenich and Fritz, 1983; Rashid, 1974).This paper continues the discussion of the role of anions in hydrometallurgical systems beyond the role of OH-, which was the topic of a previous paper (Kim et al., 2014). Table 1 lists various anions that are frequently used in conjunction with metal ions to be selectively separated or precipitated. As seen in the table, many anions are used frequently in hydrometallurgical practices. Some of the more frequently used anions include OH-, SO4 2- and CO3 2-. The halogen elements, Cl-, Br- and I- , as well as CN-, are also used in hydrometallurgical applications, especially in relation to noble metal recoveries (Meng and Han, 1994; Zhang et al., 1996; Sun et al., 1996; Starovoytov et al., 2007)."

The use of plate and frame filter presses for dewatering cement copper at Kennecott' s Bingham Canyon precipitation plant is described. The dewatering process begins by periodically flushing a dilute copper slurry from cone precipitators to a rake thickener. The thickener underflows intermittently to an agitated surge tank which feeds the filter presses with a relatively constant slurry containing 10 to 20% solids. The presses operate with a three-stage cycle; loading, air blowing and discharging. Exothermic reactions occur during the air blow which cause actual drying as well as promoting dewatering via simple filtration. At the completion of the air blow, the presses are discharged onto a conveyor belt which transfers material to the load-out building for shipment to the smelter. An extended investigation was undertaken to relate moisture content in the filter cake to maximum press temperature, acidification of press feed, percent solids in the feed, and percent insol in the copper. Of these, press tempera¬ture and feed pH (3. 5 to 1. 0) have the greatest impact on drying. Because the discharged filter cake is hot and continues to undergo exothermic oxidation, significant drying occurs during subsequent handling so that a product containing 8 to 14% moisture is delivered to the smelter.

New erosion, corrosion resistant metal, ceramic, and polymer composite technologies are being developed and marketed by Alanx Products L.P. for use in hydrocyclones, pumps, valves, and other applications in mining and minerals processing. This paper will present an overview of the ceramic/metal composite material system and properties developed, which include excellent erosion/ corrosion resistance. Wear data will be shown from a variety of laboratory tests in dry and wet conditions, in aqueous neutral and corrosive environments. Comparisons will be made with a variety of competitive materials currently used in the industries sited. Data will also be presented on field tests with pumps and hydrocyclones in hard rock mining and other abrasive/corrosive environments. Field data from North and South America, as well as Australian mining applications will be highlighted.

Bauxite residue (red mud) is an alkaline waste derived from the industrial process for extraction of alumina from bauxite ore. Some bauxite residues contain considerable concentrations of critical metals, for example, rare earth elements. Lithium in red mud was also reported as a potential resource. In the current study, a Li-rich red mud was leached using acetic acid to investigate the leaching behavior of lithium followed by neutralizing with hydrochloric or oxalic acid. By neutralizing red mud using diluted hydrochloric acid (0.01 mol/L), 58.04–60.27% of lithium was leached using 25% acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min. In the meantime, more than 95% of sodium and 85% of calcium were also dissolved in the leachate solution. While oxalic acid (0.5 mol/L) was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lithium performed lower leaching efficiencies (42.41–46.88%) in comparison of using of hydrochloric acid–neutralized red mud. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the condition. In this study, 25% (v/v) of acetic acid, at 85 °C for 60 min, was demonstrated as optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid–neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results would be useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.
