Resource Engineering and Development, Inc. is designing and building a portable 150 to 225 TPD, flotation-cyanide leach plant with unitized, skid-mounted components. This plant design, with its portability, low capital investment, and high recovery of silver and gold from many partially oxidized ores, is well suited to treat many small, high-grade deposits, old waste dumps, and old mill tailing piles. A description is given of flotation and/or cyanide leach tests run on about 17 partially oxidized, newly mined ores; waste dump materials; placer slimes; and old mill tailings.

In Mineral Processing, the objective of most processes is the separation of mixtures of minerals, which are originally associated in composite particles. Feed preparation processes grinding for instance, which take place before beneficiation or separation processes do not usually break particles at the boundary between mineral phases. They produce composite ("middlings") as well as liberated particle. It is therefore necessary, in a particulate system, to determine the proportion of particles which are liberated as well as, ideally, the size distribution of minerals which remain associated in composite particles. Up to now, there has been a lack of experimental techniques to characterize completely composite particulate systems. Heavy liquid separation which is commonly used to obtain information of this type can only be applied to simple binary cases for which one mineral has a low density (lower than e.g 2.8 ). The technique which is proposed in this paper involves the measurement of parameters on polished sections of particles mounted in a matrix, and the use of mathematical transformations to reconstruct in three-dimensions the information obtained from these measurements .

This paper addresses the state and federal permit- ting requirements and regulatory constraints associated with the development of new "grass roots" surface coal mines in the Western United States. Since a major portion of new coal development in the West will be on federally leased coal in Wyoming, my comments are directed towards that geographical area. This will give the reader some insight into the current regulatory framework within which western mining companies must operate-i.e., the major applicable state and federal laws and regulations, the more important state and federal regulatory agencies, and the major construction and operating permits that are required. Before discussing the impact of the regulations on our business, I would like to tell you something of my company and then briefly discuss Exxon's forecast of the long range outlook for coal. Carter Mining is an Won affiliated surface coal mining company. Exxon became interested in the coal business in the mid 1960's with the recognition of the future need for alternative fuel sources. Since that time, it has acquired coal reserves located in Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, Arkansas, Texas, Illinois and West Virginia. Carter's first surface mine, the Rawhide Mine, located north of Gillette, Wyoming began production in August, 1977. Our second surface mine, Caballo, located just south of Gillette, began operating last October. We have a third block of federally leased coal just east of Gillette. By 1985 we anticipate Carter's western surface mines will be producing at an annual rate of 30 million tons, subject, of course, to successful market development efforts and regulatory considerations. Rawhide will ultimately have a permitted capacity of 24 MM tons per year. The coal at Rawhide is in two seams; one 80 feet in thickness and the other 20 feet (including a 6 to 10 foot parting). A large shovel is used to remove the overburden, and a similar shovel and dragline are used to mine the coal. Caballo has a 75 foot seam; otherwise it is similar in design and operation to the Rawhide Mine.

The Regional Connector Transit Project is a 1.9-mile-long underground light rail system that will connect LA Metro’s A (Blue), E (Expo), and L (Gold) Lines in downtown Los Angeles. This $1.75-billion design-build project is scheduled for revenue service in Spring 2023. The project consists of 21-foot diameter twin-bored tunnels, a 300-footlong crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations (at 1st Street/Central Avenue, 2nd Street/ Broadway Avenue, and 2nd/Hope Streets), and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda, and 1st Streets. This paper, which is the continuation of our previous paper presented in RETC 2019—LA Metro Regional Connector Transit Project: Successful Halfway-Through Completion, will provide insight regarding the construction of major components, and the system integration and testing work undertaken for this complex transit project.

The Missouri River Intake Screen Structure and Tunnel (MRISST) is one phase of the Red River Valley Water Supply Project (RRVWSP), a vital piece of infrastructure in the state of North Dakota to transport water to drought-laden communities in the eastern half of the state. The scope of work consists of constructing a cofferdam in the Missouri River, mining a 1,600-foot by 74-inch tunnel from a secant pile shaft near the riverbank into a cofferdam, and erecting a 40-foot Y-shaped vertical pipe structure in the cofferdam to support the intake screens. Construction personnel worked in the river through the North Dakota winter to construct the cofferdam and contended with high hydrostatic pressures and raveling sands, gravels, cobbles and boulders while mining the tunnel. Diligent planning and meticulous execution were essential to overcoming the challenges encountered below the Missouri River.

Epithermal gold exploration in the last decade has developed useful models for exploring new ore districts in Oregon. In Eastern Oregon, disseminated gold occurs in epithermal deposits that have been pervasively silicified and brecciated. Many gold prospects staked since 1980 are in fluvial and lacustrine sandstone and conglomerate deposits. Clay alteration products and disseminated pyrite may be present. Vein filling calcite and thin to thick quartz veins are common. Late stage quartz forms pseudomorphs after calcite in many deposits. Arsenic, mercury and gold are geochemically anomolous but silver is usually not. The epithermal deposits are located in part of the Deer Butte Formation or equivalent units. Exploration criteria include the presence of Deer Butte Formation or correlative units and NW structures cut by N-S basin and range structures.

Remote sensing methods have been used to evaluate vegetative growth patterns for many applications, though relatively little work has focused on tracking mine reclamation progress. For coal mines in Central Appalachia, reclamation approaches that include production of biofuel feedstocks are increasingly attractive, as these may yield significant post-mining land values and contribute to carbon-neutral energy supplies. To optimize biomass productivity, the influence of reclamation practices on biomass production must be well understood, which necessitates tracking biomass production over long time periods. Satellite-based estimations may offer low-cost alternatives to conventional biomass estimations and, also, the potential to provide critical input for carbon accounting at varied spatial scales. In this paper, experimental biomass production plots on reclaimed mine sites established in Wise County, VA, are used for a comparative study of satellite spectral derivatives, which are evaluated against groundbased biomass estimates. Metrics based on four spectral derivatives, band ratios and spectral transforms were regressed against biomass measured in situ for different species. The results demonstrate that greenness and principal component 2 (PC2) were more efficient than the other spectral derivatives for monitoring the biomass of this reclaimed area. Also, it is shown that Landsat-5 TM has provided promising results for monitoring of the biomass changes occurring from 2008 to 2010 over the study area.

Numerical simulations have been used to investigate roof fall in the past decades. Comparing to the continuum based methods, the discrete element method has been well recognized for its excellent performance in simulating large strain problems and fracturing processes in the rock mass. However, the discrete element method has its limitations. When simulating a large-scale problem, a large number of particles are required, which consumes significant computational resources. In the present study, a 3D numerical model coupled with the finite-difference method (FDM) and the discreteelement method (DEM) was created to simulate the laminated roof failure in an eastern coal mine in the US. In the FDM-DEM coupled model, the laminated roof of the entry is represented by an assembly of bonded particles using PFC3D. The laminated roof is simulated by adding parallel discontinuities. The discontinuities are given certain stiffness and strength in the model. The ribs, floor, and far-field surrounding rock are represented by continuum zones using FLAC3D. The strength of the discontinuities is varied sequentially and the fracturing of the laminated roof was analyzed with respect to entry advance. The results showed that the laminated roof fractures along the discontinuities while an intact roof fractures in a dome shape. Increasing the strength of discontinuity could enlarge the tensile zone inside the laminated roof and hence change the crack distribution. In addition, the crack quantity in the laminated roof behind the advancing face decreases with the increment of discontinuity strength while this trend is not occurring ahead of the advancing face. The simulation demonstrated that coupled method using PFC3D/FLAC3D can reproduce the laminated roof failure in underground coal mines.

The St Lawrence Seaway, a deep-water canal system between Montreal and Lake Ontario, was opened for navigation on April 25, 1959. Prior to the opening of the new Seaway, small boats known as canalers and a few deep-sea carriers, primarily from Norway since World War II, were the only ships able to journey past Montreal into Lake Ontario through the old Canadian St. Lawrence canal system. Thus it was necessary for many tons of bulk and general cargo to be shipped all-rail to and from Atlantic ports or to be transhipped to and from canalers. With the opening of the new Seaway, large Great Lakes bulk carriers and a much larger percentage of the world's shipping fleet are now able to sail directly from the sea to the heart of industrial North America. In this paper, the historical events leading up to the construction of the Seaway and the physical nature of the Great Lakes transportation system are briefly reviewed. Following this, an attempt is made to evaluate the effects of the new Seaway on Canada's mineral industry. Because the Seaway has been in operation for only one season, this paper must be considered only an interim report. Because of the importance of the Seaway to iron ore, this commodity will be dealt with in detail, although the effect on other mineral commodities such as coal, petroleum, nonferrous ores, iron and steel will be mentioned. In recent years, economies of scale have continued to drive copper projects to larger throughputs to offset depleting lower grade resources. A decade ago, there were only a small number of projects that stretched beyond 100 kt/d (110,000 stpd) throughput rates. Today, and moving forward, virtually all the major copper projects are sized beyond this, with throughput rates up to 250 kt/d (275,000 stpd) now under evaluation for a number of key projects in Chile and Peru. This paper explores the development from the 160 m3 (5,650 cu ft) flotation cells, through to the 257 m3 (9,076 cu ft) cells and to the current 660 m3 (23,380 cu ft) machines. The contributions of specific copper concentrators to this growth phase are reviewed in this article. The historical basis of flotation machine scale-up is also briefly discussed. Metallurgical results as well as layout, maintenance and operational aspects are highlighted.

In flotation practices, as particles become finer, such as smaller than 20 μm, process efficiency declines markedly. Selective agglomeration of fine particles is a technique to enhance the recovery of fine valuable minerals in flotation circuits. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested. One method that has recently received much attention is to make use of magnetic force to aggregate fine particles. A selective aggregation of fine paramagnetic particles, such as sulfide minerals, can be achieved in the high-intensity magnetic field prior to or during flotation. The method is simple, selective and effective for fine particles and has low operational cost, though a minimum magnetic susceptibility for fine grains is required to promote the process. In this paper, the implementation of the ProFlote magnetic conditioning device in Boliden’s Garpenberg old concentrator in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is presented and discussed based on Boliden’s Garpenberg plant. The results showed an increase in the flotation recovery of fine valuable minerals. Zinc (Zn) production was increased by between 1,100 and 1,500 t/a, while salable yearly silver (Ag) production was increased by 1,500 kg. The copper (Cu) grade in the final concentrate was increased by 1 percent, while reductions in its Zn and lead (Pb) grades were obtained. A roasting-leaching process has been developed for concentrating platinum group metals (PGM) from a PGM-containing ferroalloy. The optimized roasting conditions used a NaOH-to-ferroalloy mass ratio of 1.2 at 600 °C for 2 h. The roasted product mainly comprised Na4SiO4, NaFeO2 and Fe2O3. The iron oxide and sodium silicate associated with the roasted product were leached in water and dilute sulfuric acid solution, while the PGM was concentrated in the acid-leached residue. A PGM concentration of 23.4% was obtained with assaying, and the concentration factor of PGM from the ferroalloy to PGM concentration was greater than 9.

Mining activity in South America is a growing enterprise. One of difficulties found in many areas of the South American continent, especially in north Chile and south Peru, is the shortage of water supply. In order to overcome this difficulty some mining companies proposed to transport the water from Pacific Ocean up to the mountains. This can be accomplished by the use of stainless steel pipelines, but this is a cost prohibitive solution and is also subject to severe pitting corrosion in a saline environment. The use of mild steel may be a lower cost solution than stainless steel as the material of construction for pipelines but it is subject to corrosion anyway. The corrosion in this case can be internal or external corrosion although cathodic protection as well preventive maintenance usually is enough to mitigate external corrosion without the need to shut down the pipeline. The same is not true about the prevention of internal corrosion. It is not practical, sometimes not even possible, shutdown a pipeline to carry out an inspection and fix sections where potential failures are detected. It is possible avoid corrosion caused by sea water within the mild steel pipelines by applying a proper chemical program designed to virtually eliminate dissolved oxygen in the water commonly called deaeration.1 This type of treatment obviously involves additional capital investment since it requires the construction of one deaerator with the first pumping station and additional equipment at each point where the water can come into contact with oxygen. Deaerators will increase operational costs and subsequent injection of chemicals will be required in the case of multiple degasification facilities thus increasing the consumption of chemicals. grams based on oxygen scavengers, the objective of the present study is to develop a new water treatment capable of preventing mild steel corrosion in aerated sea water. The new treatment must be able to prevent both generalized and localized (pitting) corrosion and overcome the necessity to construct and operate deaerators.

The La Perla Mine, owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., is located approximately 100 miles east of the City of Chihuahua in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. The mine began operations in 1958. Existing ore beneficiating facilities, consisting of heavy media and jig plants, upgrade the ore prior to shipment by rail to the Altos Hornos steelmaking complex in Monclova. Sizable reserves of two distinct ore types, which were not amenable to treatment in the existing beneficiating plant, or usable in the blast furnaces, have been mined and stockpiled in order to uncover the treatable ores. One of these ore types has been labeled "Diseminado" ore, and is low grade containing approximately 42% Fe with sulphurs ranging from 1 to 2%. The other ore type has been labeled "Pulverulento" ore, and is high grade containing approximately 65% Fe and 0.1% S, but at 80% minus 325 mesh, is too fine grained for efficient sintering. Late in 1968, Arthur G. McKee & Company became involved with the problem of improving the above ores for their efficient and economical use in Altos Hornos' blast furnaces. Early in 1969 representative samples of Diseminado ore were obtained for laboratory bench-scale testing at the University of Minnesota, Mineral Resources Research Center. Concentration tests incorporating magnetic roasting, wet magnetic separation, high intensity separation, high tension magnetic separation, anionic flotation of apatite, cationic flotation of silica and oleic acid flotation of iron were performed. Laboratory testing was concurrently carried on at La Perla Laboratory, which resulted in plans to construct a 10 TPD pilot plant. The pilot plant was operational in September, 1969. Analyzing laboratory results as well as pilot plant results, Altos Hornos and Arthur G. McKee & Company metallurgists agreed that the most promising flowsheet for the low grade Diseminado ores entailed wet magnetic cobbing, desliming, and oleic acid flotation of the non-magnetic fraction. The concept of using powdered coal-in-oil-mixtures (COM) as a composite fuel to conserve oil resources and relieve import supply problems is being vigorously promoted by the Department of Energy via the sponsoring of various demonstration units (1). The idea of COM as a useful alternative fuel has been explored on and off for over 100 years (2). The approach must be capable of grinding, mixing, storing, and combusting COM with presumably only minor equipment changes on oil-fired boilers. DOE estimates that 56 000 m3 of oil (350 000 barrels) could be spared daily if a 50-50 COM was used to generate electricity. Of course, the ability of COM suppliers to prepare and deliver a stable suspension of COM at reasonable economic costs must be achieved if the concept is to be successful. This report reviews the various methods used to attain stable coal-oil mixtures. Various physical-chemical principles associated with each method of stabilization are also discussed.

Domestic mining will not produce a significant portion of the manganese consumed in the United States unless new mining and processing techniques are implemented that will enable domestic lean ores to economically compete with rich foreign ores. One mining-processing technique that appears promising for certain deposits is in situ and/or heap leaching with aqueous SO2. Since leaching offers economic advantages of low capital costs, low operating costs, and short start-up times as well as environmental and safety improvements over conventional mining-processing, the Bureau of Mines studied the leachability of manganese deposits from several districts. Manganese oxides, hydroxides, and carbonates were leached to 80 to 90 pct recovery in 7 to 40 days of leaching with a solution containing 5 pct SO2 in column leaching tests. Preliminary cost analyses of surface mining-heap leaching, block caving-in situ leaching, and shrinkage stoping-in situ leaching indicate that the products of manganese leaching may be economically produced for the chemical and electrolytic manganese industries. The easiest marketable product to obtain would be a manganese sulfate commonly used as a fertilizer amendment. Manganese carbonates and hydroxides could also be precipitated from the pregnant leach solutions.

The spent catalyst is one of solid waste resources, which contains precious metals with considerable recovery value. However, due to the different compositions of catalyst, the recovery process is difficult. Most of the catalysts are supported by alumina which has good alkali-soluble properties, while platinum is insoluble in alkali. Platinum is enriched by pressurized alkaline solution which is a kind of hydrometallurgical process. The novelty of this study is the separation of alumina and platinum from the spent catalyst and the enrichment of platinum in the solid phase. In this study, a leaching process using NaOH as leaching agent under high temperature and pressure was employed. The effects of alkali concentration, leaching temperature, leaching time, and liquid–solid ratio on leaching efficiency were investigated. The optimum process conditions were determined as follows: alkali concentration of 240 g/L, temperature of 200℃, pressure of 1.20 MPa, time of 1 h, liquid–solid ratio of 5:1. It was concluded that the leaching rate of alumina can reach 99.69%. The content of platinum increased from 0.1749 to 21.12%, the loss of platinum was 3.39%, and the enrichment ratio of platinum increased by 120.82 times. The leaching kinetics of alumina was studied based on the shrinkage core model. The activation energy of alumina leaching is 19.53 kJ/mol, and the leaching process is controlled by chemical reaction. Pressurized alkali solution can not only efficiently leachate alumina from the spent catalyst and enrich platinum, but also reduce the reaction time and increase reaction rate.

The iron ore beneficiation plant at Serra-Azul Mines of ArcelorMittal, Brazil operates at a rated capacity of 3.2 million tons per year. The ore is concentrated using magnetic separation, jigging, hydrocyclones and spiral concentrators. The tailings from the process plant are generated from classifier overflow of 135 tons per hour dry solids and thickener underflow of 48 tons per hour dry solids. A systematic experimental program was carried out using Multi-gravity separator (MGS), and wet high-intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS) for recovering the iron values from both of the tailing streams while minimizing the total quantity of tailings to be discarded. The classifier overflow contained 32.3 percent iron, 49.9 percent silica and 2.18 percent alumina and was 45 percent finer than 45 microns in size. The thickener underflow sample contained 47.3 percent iron, 27.6 percent silica and 2.49 percent alumina and was 16 percent finer than 45 microns in size. Separation results on the classifier overflow sample with the MGS indicated that a concentrate containing 62.1 percent of iron, 10.8 percent silica and 0.36 percent alumina can be achieved with a weight recovery of 24.5 percent. The results with WHIMS at 6500 Gauss indicated that concentrate containing 62.6 percent iron, 8.3 percent silica, and 0.65 percent alumina can be achieved at a weight recovery of 34.7 percent. 4.7 percent. WHIMS studies at 6500 Gauss on thickener underflow sample indicated that a concentrate containing 61.4 percent iron, 8.8 percent silica, and 1.74 percent alumina can be achieved at a weight recovery of 57.2 percent. Based on these results, and further in-house test works, a WHIMS installation was adopted for the recovery of iron values from the tailings in the operating plant at ArcelorMittal Serra Azul Mines, Brazil.

In 1988, the U.S. Department of Energy's Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center identified three coal cleaning options for achieving flexible environmental control strategies aimed at reducing energy-related SO2 emissions. These are selective agglomeration, advanced froth flotation, and advanced cycloning. Each technology relies on maximum liberation of pyrite and other mineral matter through feed coal comminution to fine and ultrafine sizes. Research projects designed to expeditiously develop each of these technologies to the point of commercial viability were initiated. This paper will present the status of these projects and the application potential of each technology to coal beneficiation.

"Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require underground coal mines to use refuge alternatives (RAs) to provide a breathable air environment for 96 hrs. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the heat and humidity buildup inside an RA. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress or even death. MSHA regulations require that the apparent temperature in a fully occupied RA must not exceed 95°F. To investigate this issue, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted testing on a 23-person tent-type RA in its Experimental Mine (EM) in a test area that was isolated from the mine ventilation system. The test results showed that the average measured air temperature within the RA increased by 9.4°C (17°F) and the relative humidity (RH) approached 94 %RH. The test results were used to benchmark a thermal simulation model of the tested RA. The validated thermal simulation model predicted the average air temperature inside the RA at the end of 96 hours to within 0.6°C (1.0°F) of the average measured air temperature. INTRODUCTION If an accident occurs in an underground coal mine, miners who fail to escape from the mine can enter an RA for protection from adverse conditions, such as high carbon monoxide levels. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the potentially adverse thermal environment inside an RA from the metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system. Moreover, the humidity within the RA will increase through occupants’ respiration and perspiration and from the chemical reaction within the CO2 scrubbing system. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress, heat stroke, or even death. In its 2007 report to Congress, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) recommended that RAs should be designed to ensure that the internal apparent temperature (a temperature-humidity metric) in an occupied RA does not exceed 35°C (95°F). However, a standard method to determine compliance with this metric does not exist. The heat transfer process within and surrounding an RA is very complex, and is not easily defined analytically or experimentally. To investigate the related issues, OMSHR conducted heat and humidity testing on a 23-person tent-type RA in its Experimental Mine (EM) in a test area that was isolated from the mine ventilation system. During the testing, numerous parameters were measured: heat input to the chamber, the air temperature and relative humidity inside the RA, the air temperature in the mine, the mine strata temperatures versus depth, and the airflow inside and outside the chamber. The focus of this paper is on the temperature rise within an RA. TAITherm heat transfer analysis software was used to develop a thermal simulation model of the RA as it was tested in the mine, using the test results as the benchmark. Both sensible and latent heat were used in the test and the model."
