New Nedre Fiskumfoss is a construction project in North Trøndelag, Namsen River. The purpose of the contract is construction of a new hydropower plant, that will phase out the existing power plant in the same waterfall. The contract consists of a tunnel system with cross sections from 16 m2 to 150 m2, powerhouse and transformer in rock caverns, 6 shafts and major works with inlet and outlet below river level. Technical challenges consist of demanding design on rock extraction, cofferdams, solid constructions with challenging design and demanding rebar work, as well as restrictions and unpredictable water flow in a national salmon river.

Draglines often work from a position on the active highwall or spoil side bench to remove undisturbed waste material and spoil in the previously mined pit. To protect the dragline crew members and the machine, it is necessary that the highwall remain stable while the dragline is present on the bench. In the past several years, we have been involved in determining the causes for highwall failures that included the dragline. While there have been no injuries and limited dragline damage with these incidents, the potential certainly exists for a more serious outcome. In all cases, the operation had completed a geotechnical study to support the ground control plan and pit designs. However, all these incidents included aspects that would not likely have been identified in studies to determine highwall and spoil designs to support ground control procedures. In general, these events included aspects that were localized and would have been difficult to identify in initial slope stability studies either observationally or during the soil testing and modelling efforts. Although the authors do not have quantitative evidence of this, it does seem there has been an increased number of events in recent years. This may be due to loss of institutional knowledge, mining in more challenging areas, or simply an increase in localized variation. This paper will describe some of the issues we have seen and what the causes of failure were. It becomes clear that avoiding similar incidents in the future requires on-going observation and inspection of active highwalls and spoil benches to try and identify local variability and impact on mining. The information can proactively be used to update stability modeling of any concerning issues to determine likelihood of problems and to develop solutions.

This paper discusses a composite of two coal reserve studies, each of which made use of a computer-based modeling system to assist in an evaluation of multi-seam deposits. The model permitted simultaneous consideration of seam thickness, seam structure, overburden thickness, over-burden ratio, and quality parameters for sulphur content, ash content, BTU values and the EPA Compliance index. The model is designed for use by a non-programmer, geologist or mining engineer. It enables the user, from a computer terminal in his office, to specify constraints (for example maximum um sulphur and maximum- ash content, minimum seam thickness and minimum BTU rating), and produces a report showing the volume, quality and location of that part of the total in place deposit satisfying all the constraints.

The ( ) Tayaaja ( ) . The deposit ( ) 130 kilometers due east of the continental divide and approximately 290 kilometers east-southeast of Lima (Figure 1). Relief in the immediate vicinity of the mine, which lies or the west side of the Mantaro river, is in excess of 2,000 meters, and the elevation varies from a low of 2,000 meters above sea level on the Mantaro River to a high of 4,386 meters at point T-27 (Figure 2). Although the Cobriza deposit was first reported by the Italian Geographer Antonio Raimondi in 1866, only three reports have been published on the deposit, which began production in 1966 (Duefias, 1908; Fernandez Concha and Garcia y Garcia, 1961; Petersen. 1965). Many private reports have, however, been written by geologists employed by the Cerro de Pasco Corporation. These reports and the author's observations, while employed as the Cobriza Division Mine Geologists form the basis of the present paper, which describes the relations between-the ore controls in the Cobriza mine and the regional and local structure.

"The Sistema de Potabilización Área Norte project (Northern Area Purification System) was a major expansion of the potable water system in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The aim of the project was to transport and purify raw water from the Paraná River to provide potable water for five communities in the northern part of the province, benefitting up to two million people. The project was constructed by a joint venture (JV) of four South American contractors and consisted of the following key components:• Treatment plant: A 16-ha (39-acre) area was cleared for the construction of a treatment plant to purify 900,000 m3/day (1.2 million cu ft/d) of raw water from the Paraná River and distribute it to the surrounding communities.• Bored tunnel: Nearly 15 km (9 miles) of 3.6 m (12 ft) inner diameter tunnel, ranging from 18 to 22 m (59 ft to 72 ft) below grade, was bored with two earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) to draw the raw water from the river. The TBMs started from a central launch shaft and proceeded in opposite directions. Cristina advanced northbound to the Paraná River Intake System, and Liliana advanced southbound to the new treatment plant.• Access and ventilation shafts: Five access shafts and eight ventilation shafts were installed along the length of the tunnel. The access shafts were designed to provide entry points for inspection and maintenance of the final tunnel. The five shafts consisted of one central launch shaft in the middle of the tunnel alignment, one retrieval shaft at each end of the tunnel (intake and treatment plant, respectively) and two intermediate shafts. The intermediate shafts were installed before the TBM passed, with a final liner to be installedafterward."

The objective of this research was to conduct field-scale experiments at an operating surface coal mine in order to determine the impact of the bucket fill factor on dragline production rate and energy consumption. Data collected from a dragline monitoring system were recorded in a specifically designed software tool and the relationship among these parameters was established. an algorithm for the determination of the ?best? fill factor was developed and integrated in the software. It was determined for the analyzed dragline in the mine that energy consumption in the digging phase can be reduced by 36% and production rate can be increased by 1.4% for a bucket fill factor of about 80%, a fill distance of 19.8 m (65 ft) (i.e., 3.1 bucket lengths) and a bucket fill time of 15 sec. the method developed and applied in this study may help dragline operators to determine the fill factor that will increase production rates and reduce energy consumption in specific surface coal mines. The DC Water and Sewer Authority's Long Term Control Plan includes tunnels, sewer separation, pumping station rehabilitation and green infrastructure to reduce combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges to the District waterways. The Northeast Boundary Tunnel is a deep, large sewer tunnel that will reduce CSO discharges; signifi- cantly mitigate known chronic flooding in the Northeast Boundary drainage area and improve the water quality of the Anacostia River. This paper presents the unique combination of Owner and Contractor perspectives of the entire Project from conception through procurement, execution, and contract management, providing lesson learned, chal- lenges encountered, and solutions implemented to deliver the Project successfully.

Mr. Chairman, Fellow Keynoters, Ladies, and Gentlemen: It is purposed to consider the theme of this meeting, "The 1970's - Pivotal Decade for the Mineral Industries," from the particular -- some would say peculiar -- point of view of one engaged in mineral engineering education, and this coign of vantage prompts the textbookish subtitle, "Problems and Solutions (?) in Undergraduate Mineral Engineering Education." Three interrelated problems, or problem areas, will be presented and discussed, and where solutions seem to be emerging or seem worthy to be suggested, they will be identified. The three problems are: 1. The goals, and therefore the course requirements, of the undergraduate curricula are in question, 2. The unit costs of undergraduate education appear excessive to those who bear the charges, and 3. The social ambience of the day affects for the worse the work attitudes and the career motivation of both prospective and in-course students. The Need. - Any discussion of these problems must bottom upon recognized national needs for minerals and a technologically sound minerals industry staffed by competent engineers, particularly at the exploration, development, and production levels, Fortunately, these needs have been recognized and to some extent quantified, and they are even now under further intensive study by some of the most competent members of our society and profession. The latter reference is, of course, to the current work of the National Commission on Materials Policy (U.S.A.) under the executive directorship of Dr. James Boyd. "INTRODUCTION Ganntas Tunnel is part of the modernization project of the railway between Alger and Oran, in Algeria. In order to double and rectify the existing line between El Affroun and Khémis Miliana, the alignment foresees the excavation of a 7 km-long twin tunnel. The excavation works started in June 2011 with the contractor CCECC, under the supervision of SYSTRA. Excavation is driven in conventional method by hydraulic hammer simultaneously on 8 different faces since excavation was started also from a junction window towards the middle of the tunnel. The minimum longitudinal distance to be respected between two contiguous tunnel faces has been set to 30 m. The tunnel cross-section is a 70 m² oval shaped profile, temporary support consists of shotcrete, bolts and steel ribs. A 30 to 50 cm thick cast in situ concrete final lining has been provided as well. When the tunnel reached a fault zone in soft clayey marls extreme squeezing occurred, works were stopped and re-profiling operations were carried out along more than 100 m. To date, works proceed at slow rate since high convergences are still monitored and completion of works is not expected before December 2016.GEOLOGY The project is located within the Tellian Atlas mountain area, including in particular the Djebel Ganntas massif in between Mitidja and Chleff plains. Djebel Ganntas is characterized by an extensive massif aligned in East-West direction with smooth slopes made of soft clays that emerge in multiple cliffs and ravines. On the top of it, along the edge, a more recent sandstone formation is found. The existing data on the geology did not allow to establish an accurate geological model at tender stage. In-situ investigations allowed at design stage to identify a Quaternary alluvial cover of clays and gravel, followed by a Miocene stratum divided in a sandy top layer and a lower clayey layer. From a structural point of view, geological maps suggest a north direction dip of layers, but the in situ surveys showed that layers were highly folded. The lack of information at tender stage on the structure of the geological series should have triggered an extensive investigation campaign at detailed design stage which did not take place causing serious consequences on costs and time at construction stage."

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as black lung, is caused by the inhalation of respirable coal mine dust and is a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease with no cure. Historically, CWP has taken a tremendous human and financial toll in the US coal mining industry. Recent health surveillance data indicates that CWP continues to occur at elevated levels. Respirable coal dust exposure must be controlled to prevent the development of CWP. The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts laboratory and mine-site research to identify control technologies that can be used to successfully reduce respirable dust levels. Various technologies, using multiple methods of control, can be applied in order to reduce dust levels. An overview ofCWP’s impact and a general methodology for controlling respirable dust in underground coal mines are discussed in this paper.

In 1982 the U.S. Congress passed the Nuclear Waste Policy Act (NWPA) to provide for the development of an underground repository for spent nuclear fuel. This development will be managed by the United States Department of Energy. In 1986, the President selected three areas for site characterization to determine their suitability for the development of an underground repository; those sites were: 1) A site in volcanic tuff located at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, 2) a site in bedded salt located in Deaf Smith County in Texas, and 3) a site in basalt located in Hanford, Washington. At present conceptual repository designs are being developed for each site. A key element of a repository design is the underground ventilation system required to support construction, nuclear waste emplacement, and potential waste retrieval. This paper describes the preliminary ventilation system designed for the repository in tuff. The concept provides separate ventilation systems for the construction and waste emplacement activities. The paper further describes the means by which acceptable environmental conditions will be re-established to allow re-entry into previously closed rooms for the purpose of inspection, maintenance or retrieval.

This report describes research leading to the design, prototype fabrication, and successful in-mine proof-of-concept testing of two improved stench fire warning systems for underground noncoal mines. The stench system, widely used in underground noncoal mines to warn of fire or other emergency suffers several serious shortcomings, including the toxicity of the odorant leading to debility in miners; reactivity of the odorant with iron oxide, resulting in unreliable warning because the odor may fade when transported long distances in steel pipe; lack of control over the rate at which agent is released into the air-stream, resulting in some work areas receiving unbearably high stench concentrations and other areas being missed altogether; lack of visual indication of system status, valve positions, or proper system operation; and excessively long stench transit times. In 1979, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, began research to upgrade the stench warning system. Two systems were subsequently developed which offer significant advantages over current systems.

The United States Bureau of Reclamation is constructing the $200 million Navajo Indian Irrigation Project to irrigate 110,000 acres of land on the Navajo Indian Reservation in northwestern New Mexico. Water from the San Juan River is impounded by Navajo Dam and will be conducted for 26 miles along a series of tunnels and canals to the area to be irrigated. Tunnel No. 3 is the third in a series of six tunnels along the route. Bids for construction of Tunnel No. 3 were received by the Bureau of Reclamation in September, 1970. Fluor Utah was low bidder at $8.7 million. Ten of the 12 bids were based on excavation by tunnel boring machine. The consulting firm of A. A. Mathews, Inc., was retained by the contractor to advise on geologic and rock mechanics conditions after support problems developed in the tunnel. Tunnel No. 3 is 15,264 feet long, has an 18 foot lined diameter, rises approximately one-half inch per 100 feet in the direction being excavated, and is 6,000 feet above sea level. There is one short curve in the alignment. Minimum concrete thickness is 12 inches with eight inches from 'A' to 'B' line making a pay diameter of 21 feet, 4 inches. The tunnel is supported with rock bolts and steel pans. Mole excavation began on May 13, 1971 from a blasted starting chamber. After 46 feet were excavated the mole was shut down and the trailing muck handling equipment was pulled into place. After advancing 1,700 feet in 34 days, unanticipated ground water conditions and ground support problems were encountered slowing moling so that the next 1,000 feet of advance consumed 97 days until December

The Riley Pass strip mine is an abandoned uranium-bearing lignite deposit in Harding County, South Dakota, covering about 150 acres of highwalls, pit floor and mine spoils exhibiting elevated levels of radioactivity. Six reclamation design alternatives were developed, ranging from doing nothing to reclaiming to approximate original con-tour. The alternatives were evaluated for expense, site stabilization, and mitigation of public safety hazards. A comparative economic evaluation on three of the alternatives was completed for the Forest Service in selecting an alternative and substantiating federal funding requests. This evaluation included economic impacts associated with physical and radiologic health hazards, affects on recreational users, socioeconomic impacts and environmental improvement.

Pillar stability continues to be a significant concern in multiple-level mining conditions, particularly for deep mines when pillars are not stacked or the thickness of interburden between mining levels is thin. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently conducting research to investigate the stability of pillars in multiple-level limestone mines. In this study, FLAC3D models were created to investigate the effect of interburden thickness, the degree of pillar offset between mining levels, and in situ stress conditions on pillar stability at various depths of cover. The FLAC3D models were validated through in situ monitoring that was conducted at a multiple-level stone mine. The critical interburden thickness required to minimize the interaction between the mining levels on top-level pillar stability was explored, where the top level mine was developed first followed by the bottom level mine. The model results showed that there is an interaction between numerous factors that control the stability of pillars in multiple- level conditions. A combination of these factors may lead to various degrees of pillar instabilities. The highest degree of local pillar instability occurred when pillar overlap ranges between 10 and 70%. On the contrary, the highest degree of stability occurs when the pillars are stacked, the underlying assumption is that the interburden between mining levels is elastic (never fails). Generally, for depths of cover investigated in this study, the stability of top-level pillars shallower than 100 m (328 ft) or with interburden thicknesses greater than 1.33 times the roof span—16 m (52.4 ft) in this study—does not appear significantly impacted by pillar offset. The results of this study improve understanding of multiple-level interactions and advances the ultimate goal of reducing the risk of pillar instability in underground stone mines.

CYCLING WITH CEMENT "THE WHEEL IS COME FULL CIRCLE" Shakespeare's King Lear Act V, Scene 3, Line 176 The time clock of the cement industry has been turned back to the early 1950s. After the trials and tribulations of the decade of the Sixties, the hands now stand where they did just over twenty years ago. Cement shipments have steadily increased, with a record 419 million barrel level (78.8 million tons) being reached last year. Plants are operating at average utilization rates in excess of 85 percent of rated capacity. The spread between supply and demand has narrowed to where a definite shortage of cement now exists within the industry. The notable and unfortunate difference between the two periods however is that, back then, cement's returns were a respectable 14 to 18 percent, whereas today they stand at less than half those levels. Insufficient return forms the present foundation of the U.S. cement industry. This lack is destined to have a cumulative effect. Just as the industry's balance between supply and demand is returning to favorable proportions, promising a period that has historically and now should generate those profit levels required to modernize and provide for capacity addition, cement instead finds itself frozen by federal price controls into the semi-depressed condition that has existed for over a decade and from which it was just starting to emerge. Capital is not attracted to continued low returns, and increasingly restrictive pollution control measures are necessitating great non-productive expenditures be made as definite costs to stay in business. Even a clouded crystal ball would reveal that additional cement plant closings can be expected.

In January, 1969, the Central Research Division of Continental Oil Company initiated a research program on roof control. The purpose of the research was to improve roof stability. Toward this end, it was necessary to determine which of the many geological and geometrical variables have a significant effect on roof stability. The isolation of these significant variables would allow research effort to be concentrated where it would be most effective in improving roof control. The research effort was directed toward two major objectives. One was to de-fine the geological and/or geometrical parameters that affect the severity of roof conditions in any particular area of the mine. This study was concerned with roof fall intensity. The second was to define why roof falls in Humphrey No. mine (and in northern West Virginia-south-western Pennsylvania coal mining areas) are oriented so that they occur primarily in north-south rooms or entries. This study was concerned with roof fall orientation. To provide a reference framework for further discussion, a geological description of the area is presented in Part II. In Parts III and IV, the procedures, methods, and 'results of the research applied toward the afore-mentioned major objectives are presented. Part V contains the conclusions and recommendations for-warded by this study.

"We investigated experimentally and theoretically the adhesion behavior of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (At.f6) to different copper sulfides. The adsorption experiment showed cell densities of 10.74 × 106, 8.06 × 106, 3 × 106, 4.24 × 106 and 2.35 × 106 cells/cm2, respectively, on the surfaces of djurleite, bornite, covellite and chalcopyrite. The order was: djurleite > bornite > covellite > chalcopyrite. The results indicate that A. ferrooxidans has high affinity to adhering to the surfaces of djurleite and bornite in the acidic region. But the thermodynamic approach predicts that there will be no attachment of At.f6 to the surfaces of bornite, covellite and chalcopyrite. This discrepancy is due to the inadequate description of electrostatic interactions. The DLVO approach shows attachment of At.f6 to the surfaces of djurleite, bornite and covellite, and repulsion between At.f6 and chalcopyrite. The DLVO approach can explain the differences of the adhesion of At.f6 to different copper sulfides.IntroductionThe bioleaching of low-grade copper sulfides is a developing technology, and has been applied successfully to the extraction of copper from secondary sulfide minerals (Watling, 2006; Pradhan et al., 2008; Akcil and Deveci, 2010). The bioleaching of chalcopyrite is still a major challenge (Bosecker, 1997; Brierley and Brierley, 2001; Ehrlich, 2004). A study conducted at Billiton Process Research showed the following preferential order of sulfide minerals leached by mesophilic cultures: chalcocite > bornite > cubanite > covellite > pyrite > enargite > carrolite >> chalcopyrite (Dew et al., 1999). The bacteria can solubilize the valuable metals from the orebodies by the oxidation of minerals. Bacterial adhesion plays a critical role in the bioleaching processes (Chen et al., 2008; Harneit et al., 2006). Generally, bacterial adhesion can be explained by surface thermodynamics and the extended DLVO theory, in which the adhesion energy between the bacteria and mineral is calculated as a function of the separation distance (Sharma, 1999; Bos et al., 1999; Sharma and Hanumantha Rao, 2002). These methods take into account Lifshitz-van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions and acid-base interactions (Busscher et al., 2010). These interactions are very well understood and formulated in mathematical equations. The most important inputs in these calculations are surface energy, surface charge, electron donation and electron acceptance on the bacterial cell surface and mineral."

Three types of apatite were identified by means of cathodoluminescence (CL) images in flotation concentrate and tailing samples from the Catalão Mine in Brazil. They are predominantly blue apatite, followed by green apatite and, less frequently, yellow apatite. The chemical compositions of these types of apatite were determined by electron microprobe analysis and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Blue and green apatite responded well to the process, thus remaining in the concentrate, while yellow apatite remained in the tailings. Yellow apatite has the lowest phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5 ) content and largest anionic and cationic sites substitution, followed by green apatite, whereas blue apatite is the most homogeneous, with highest phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) grades and lowest substitution level.

Laminated rock can delaminate and fail under certain stress states. Delamination-caused roof fall and cutter roof failure is a common failure mechanism in roadways in Pittsburgh coal seam due to the existence of laminated shale roof. Two-dimensional numerical models were developed at laboratory scale based on the bonded particle method in order to simulate the delamination with particle flow code. In these models, an assembly of bonded particles and parallel weak planes represents the laminated rock. This model calibrated the micro-parameters of the bonded particlematerial and weak planes with laboratory data. The mechanism of fracturing and delamination in a laminated specimen was investigated using unconfined and confined compression test and unsupported roof compression test. The numerical results show that, under a constant horizontal stress, delamination occurswhen the stress is much lower than its compressive strength. The confined compressive test indicates that delamination is restrained by applying confining stress since delamination-caused failure does not occur during any stage of the confined compressive test. Unsupported roof compression tests showed propagation of cutter roof failure with initiation of cracks and delamination at the intersections of the roof and ribs. An outer failed zone and inner failed zone form separately. The separated zones connect and form an opening in the roof. The presented numerical results provide additional insight into process of delamination.
