The Tessenderlo-Kerley Leachprocess has been shown to be effective in the removal of residual copper from molybdenite concentrates. Concentrates of varying mineralogy, including those containing relatively large amounts of chalcopyrite, have been successfully leached on laboratory and pilot plant scales. The lixiviant system is ammonia andammonium bisulfite with air / oxygen addition. An abrasive is added which greatly enhances the kinetics, and it is subsequently screened out and reused. The dissolved copper is easily recovered using existing technology. Extraction profiles, reagent consumptions, and mineralogical data are presented.

Concentrate flowrates have been measured for the flotation of -100 mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer controlled 0.076 m x 3.5 m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height), air flow rate, and solid feed concentration. The size distribution of concentrate and tailings samples were determined. The results obtained show that the concentrate flow rate was independent of collection zone height, but dependent on the gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of these fundamental operational parameters.

The recent depressant research is summarized, and a new kind of depressant (SCO) has been put forward in this article. Using Na-oleate as a collector and SCO as a depressant, separation of dolomite and phosphate was studied. When SCO was added in the concentration range of 80 g/t to 2kg/t at pH 9.5 ± 0.2, dolomite was absolutely depressed, and apatite kept its floatability. Interestingly, in the mixture of phosphate and dolomite, the dolomite floated. The reasons for such a behavior are investigated through flotation and electrokinetic studies. It was found that the adsorption of dissolved species on dolomite and phosphate resulted in reverse flotation. A concentration of 31.59% P205 and 83.87% recovery of P205 was obtained from the mixture of phosphate and dolomite (2:1) with 26.6% P205 using 210 g/t SCO and Na-oleate 4.93*10-5 M at pH 9.

The Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd at Nchanga was commissioned in 1974 as the world's first largest successfully operated agitation leach SX-EW plant for copper production. The design, development and operation of the plant soon after commissioning termed as TLP stage II has been described by Holmes et al (1). In the initial phase the plant was designed to treat approximately 25,000 tonnes per day of current flotation tailings from the Nchanga Concentrator operations, and had a design capacity to produce 75,000 tonnes per annum of copper. Further expansion took place in 1986, and TLP stage III was successfully commissioned to treat an additional 20,000 -25,000 tonnes per day of large reserves (over 135m tonnes) of reclaimed tailings stockpiled since the early 1930's in four paddock type tailings dams (T01 to T04). The salient feature of TLP stage III expansion described by S K Mwenechanya et al (2 -3) was the installation of the world's largest Horizontal Belt Filter Plant with 26 filters each of 80 m2 filtration area.

The Mini-Disc TM cutter drill bit is a radical design departure from the traditional tri-cone rock drill bit. Miniature disc type cutting tools as small as 3.25 inches (82.5 mm) diameter are fitted to a bit body to cut individual concentric kerfs. The action is the same as that commonly used on large tunnel boring machines but miniaturized. The high performance rate and efficiency of a disc cutter are the result of producing a large proportion rock chips rather than sand or powder. The Mini-Disc TM drill bit, referred to as the "Disc Bit" has other unique features as well. It can be re-greased between runs. It can be rebuilt in the field in about 15 minutes, cutters can be replaced and the Disc-Bit appears to require less down hole hydraulic power than conventional bits. Thoroughly tested in the laboratory, the bit has recently been undergoing field trials in well drilling, blast hole drilling and shaft drilling. As any engineer knows, the laboratory cannot shake out all the problems but it eliminates the more glaring weaknesses. Performance results have been exhilarating, and a few mechanical problems were discovered and largely overcome. This paper is a progress report.

High pressure grinding mills have been successfully introduced in the industry. They offer the possibilities for capacity increase of existing plants and reduction of operating costs. Further metallurgical advantages in gold and copper are possible. The plants in operation are running in different applications and modes of operation. They can be installed in a combination with SAG and ball mills or in a stand-alone mode. In combination with other grinding mills, it has to be investigated how the HPGR can be installed to reach the full efficiency. Though the mining industry is beset with problems-a broad slump in metal prices, a rash of acquisitions and takeover attempts, rising capital costs, and an aggressive Canadian energy program-there was an under-current of optimism at the 1981 AMC conference that's been missing at industry meetings in recent years. The industry anticipates a turnaround in the 1980s, buoyed perhaps by the new spirit of cooperation from the Reagan administration. For the first time in years, it appears that Washington and the mining industry share mutual goals for developing the nation's resources. A number of prominent Reagan officials were on hand during the three-day conference in Denver, September 28-30, to reassure conferees that restrictions plaguing energy and minerals development would be eased. Interior Secretary James Watt and other government speakers promised cooperation in bringing balance to federal public lands policies, a review of regulations that have hampered the industry, and prompt action on domestic minerals policy. Daniel N. Miller, Jr., assistant interior secretary for energy and minerals, said, "It is our intent to dismantle the overhearing bureaucracy that has stifled mineral and energy exploration. We know that Interior's rules have shackled the mining industry in recent years, and we know that those rules must be eased." Miller noted that the administration will not permit mining on national park lands or wildlife refuges, but added that "we must assess a variety of uses of public lands ... we will restore lands to multiple use where practical." EPA administrator Anne Gorsuch assured industry representatives that the administration intends to work within environmental laws and with Congress to review and revise water, soil, and air pollution policies. "We have a strong commitment to see that there are major mid-course corrections" of air regulations, Gorsuch said. Support from these "new friends in Washington" will be crucial in light of the serious problems pressuring the industry. Copper prices have plunged to almost three-year lows and prices for molybdenum, gold, and silver have slumped. Earnings are down and today's high interest rates prevent a quick turnaround. Companies are on edge after the recent takeovers of Kennecott, St. Joe Minerals, and Texasgulf Though the companies may benefit from the major injection of capital that large energy firms can provide, many observers fear the new parent companies won't be willing or able to survive the cyclical metal markets. Arco and Gulf Resources, for example, have been criticized for closing Anaconda's Montana copper facility and the Bunker Hill unit in Idaho, respectively. Canada's national energy program has brought additional pressure on the industry. This policy, which emphasizes Canadian majority ownership of the country's energy sources, resulted in acquisition of Texasgulf's Kidd Creek lead-zinc-silver complex by Canadian and French interests. In response, the American Mining Congress adopted two resolutions on takeovers. One calls for the US government to review laws regulating tender offers and takeovers "to better ensure that principles of fairness and sound investment policy govern such transactions.'' The other asks the government to demand "fairness and reciprocity" as a basis for US policy governing international trade in minerals and investment relations with other countries. AMC's shopping list included four other priority goals, aimed primarily at the Interior Department: • Prompt implementation of Interior's efforts to bring order and balance to rules governing access to public lands for exploration and development. • Statement by the President of a comprehensive and coherent domestic minerals policy. • Amendment of the Clean Air Act to remove impediments to productivity and barriers to economic development that are not necessary to essential goals of the act. • Development of new approaches to better achieve worker health and safety in the most cost-effective manner without penalizing productivity. Almost 6000 mining industry executives attended the 1981 convention-the largest in AMC's 84-year history. As in years past, the conference offered a wide spectrum of presentations-nearly 100 papers in 26 sessions-ranging from commodity forecasts to the latest technical achievements. New Administration Stockpile Goals The minerals availability session included a presentation on management of the minerals stockpile by Paul K. Kruege r of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Krueger notes that rather than providing incentives for development of a domestic raw materials industry, the government has "a history of providing disincentives to industry." In mining industries, he adds, the rate of productivity growth has been -6% over the last six or seven years. Krueger feels there will be a major change under the Reagan administration. The presence of methane gas in mines creates hazards of explosions, fire and suffocation. Under certain conditions the occurrence of methane also poses a danger of gas and coal outbursts. Consequently, prevention of gas and coal outbursts in coal mines requires a sound knowledge of methane gas occurrence in mine workings. However, the direct method of determining methane content of coals developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines is time and labor consuming for measurement, a new transportable methane tester was developed for Japanese coal mines. The instrument automatically measures emission gas from coal samples in the underground and also records and stores the data. Back on the surface, the tester can be connected via a RS 232 port to a PC computer for methane content estimation. Details of this technique are described here. Results on methane content determined in Japanese and U.S. western coal seams are discussed, as well.

Knight Piésold and Co. hosted its annual roundtable discussion on March 17, 2011 at the Stockman Hotel and Casino in Elko, NV. The theme for Roundtable 2011 was, ?High density tailings, paste, and filtered tailings,? although the topic may well have been subtitled, ?Don?t prematurely rule out any technologies before they are given their day in court.? Bryan Ulrich, Knight Piésold?s local representative, as well as Tom Kerr from Knight Piésold?s office in Denver, CO, were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. Ulrich and Kerr are senior vice president and president of Knight Piésold?s U.S. practice, respectively. The event played host to more than 30 attendees from several western states. Attendees included personnel from a dozen mining properties and various corporate offices. There were also attendees from manufacturing and specialist consulting firms who have been providing services to various high-density tailings, paste and filtered tailings operations worldwide. It may be noted that the term ?filtered tailings? is used in this discussion. Alternative terms, such as ?dry stack? or ?dewatered tailings,? should be avoided whenever possible, as such terms tend to give a false sense about the nature of the material since these materials typically still retain a significant amount of moisture.

"An underground environment with high air temperature and humidity conditions generated from various heat and moisture sources can significantly affect the thermoregulation processes of the human body. This can lead to a series of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat stroke. The majority of the metabolic energy of a mine worker results in the production of heat. If the human body is to maintain thermal equilibrium, then this metabolic heat must be transferred to the ambient surroundings at the same rate. The heat loss from the human body occurs through a combination of heat transfer processes, such as respiratory heat exchange, convection, radiation and evaporation. If the heat loss from the human body to the ambient surroundings is less than the metabolic heat produced, the excess will be accumulated within the human body, which will result in a rise in the core and skin temperatures. This can ultimately lead to a heat-related illness or a combination of heat-related illnesses. This paper aims to discuss major heat-related issues and provide an overview of various mine ventilation and cooling systems, which can be employed to overcome high levels of heat and humidity in underground mines. In this paper, the effects of heat exposure on the health, safety and productivity of the mine workers are also highlighted. IntroductionMining in the United States remains one of the most hazardous industries, despite significant reductions in fatal injuries over the last century (Coleman and Kerkering, 2007; Saleh and Cummings 2011; Jacklitsch, Musolin and Kim, 2016). Occupational health hazards within the mining industry include hazards that are physical, such as traumatic injury or hearing loss; chemical, such as silica or diesel particulate matter; biological; ergonomic; and psychological (Donoghue, 2004; Saleh and Cummings, 2011). The effects of some of these hazards can be diagnosed immediately, while many, like black-lung and silicosis, will have long-term effects on the health, safety and life quality of mine workers (Donoghue, 2004; National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, NIOSH, 2000). Among these hazards, exposure to heat and humidity can significantly affect the safety, health and productivity of mine workers, particularly in deep and hot underground mines (Roghanchi, Sunkpal and Kocsis, 2015). Short-term acute heat exposures can cause a rise in the core temperature of the human body, which can result in a heat-related illness or combination of heat-related illnesses. Adverse long-term chronic heat exposure can generate serious occupational heat-related illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases, mental health problems and chronic kidney diseases. High core body temperatures coupled with dehydration can generate negative behavioral effects such as physical fatigue, irritability, lethargy, impaired judgment, loss of dexterity and loss of concentration (Xiang et al., 2014)"

Without insulation we could not survive on this planet. This may sound like a self-serving statement but it is a fact. The blanket of air which surrounds us is a very effective insulating blanket, allowing some shortwave solar radiation to warm us during the day while retaining the longer infrared radiation at night. Our life on earth is very much dependent on materials performing an insulating function without being thought of as insulation, clothing, fur, window glass, the ice of an igloo etc. The mechanisms of heat transfer involved in these materials are analogous to those involved in engineered insulations - Engineered insulations are designed for maximum effectiveness for given conditions within the applicable retraints. Engineered insulations are very effective! As an illustration let us consider this graph (Figure 1). It represents: 1. The radiative heat transfer between two 1 foot2 (0.0932) radiantly black surfaces, one at 100F (38C) and the other at the temperature indicated on the bottom scale. This does not include the convective and conductive heat flow of the air, both of which are significant but small in comparison. 2. The heat transfer resulting from the placement of 1 inch (25.4 mm) of insulation [10 pcf (160 kg/m3) ceramic fiber] between these two plates.

The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center (PSHTC) of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) provides engineering and scientific support to the inspectorate personnel of MSHA. One of the Center's myriad roles is to assist in the investigation of mining accidents, especially those involving fatalities. Center personnel utilize forensics to help uncover the causes of accidents and to make technical recommendations on the prevention of future similar mishaps. To exemplify a typical forensic investigation, this paper documents the methodology used in determining the reasons for a boat sinking, which resulted in a double fatality on a mine company pond.

The potential use of prereduced pellets in the burden of the blast furnace continues to be a topic of interest. Several excellent papers have been written describing the theoretical and experimental rewards. (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) Significant increases in iron output and substantial savings in coke consumption are major advantages over conventional iron oxide pellets. The savings are especially important in areas where good coking coal is at a premium. Lower handling and transportation costs may also be factors favoring prereduction. When considering the overall cost of making and smelting prereduced materials the optimum metallization level becomes significant. An analysis by Agarwal and Pratt of the thermodynamic aspects of blast furnace operation with all prereduced pellets shows that the criteria controlling coke consumption depends upon the degree of reduction and upon the percentage of oxygen (present as FeO) removed by solution loss.(8) The authors state that although the chances of obtaining large fuel savings are greatly improved when metallization is high, reduction to the highest degree, which is costly, may not result in the lowest energy requirement per ton of hot metal; thus, over reduction could possibly result in wasted energy in the blast furnace.

Siderite ore with high phosphorus content was reduced isothermally at 1,050° C with pulverized coal and different dosages of sodium carbonate. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energydispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) were used to characterize the samples. The influence of sodium carbonate on the carbothermic reduction process was investigated. Sodium carbonate and its dosage played a considerable role in the carbothermic reduction. The iron particle size in the reduced ore was below 20 µm, and fayalite was abundant without sodium carbonate additive. With a mass ratio of Na2CO3-to-ore of 5% additive, the iron particle size in the reduced ore was generally above 50 µm, and the diffraction intensity associated with metallic iron in the XRD pattern increased. The effect of sodium carbonate on the phase transformation of fluorapatite during carbothermic reduction was also addressed via thermodynamic calculations and aqueous leaching experiments. The results showed that the fluorapatite was not reduced to P2 at 1,050° C, and a portion of the fluorapatite was converted to soluble phosphate. The reduction of siderite can be catalyzed by adding an appropriate amount of sodium carbonate. This catalytic activity was caused by an increase in the reducing reaction activity of FeO and the acceleration of the carbon gasification reactions. The decrease in phosphorous content in the iron concentrate was attributed to an improvement in the separation of the iron phase from the slag phase when sodium carbonate was added and with the formation of soluble phosphate.

This paper presents a review of the state of the art in coal preparation plant instrumentation and a discussion of automation practice that could be applied based on current mineral beneficiation experience and demonstrated foreign technology in coal washing plants. Specific e-mules of applications of remotely controlled slurry values, pneumatic and electronic field transmitters, computers for control and data logging, and on-line analytical instrumentation are given. A program, to demonstrate this technology is described.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating methods and technology that, when applied to existing continuous coal mining machines, may improve production and safety. Toward those goals, a microcomputer network has been designed that provides automated control and monitoring of all mining machine systems using a single twisted pair cable (two conductor stranded wire twisted together to provide a level of noise rejection). The network also provides -connections for intelligent sensors and systems for navigation and diagnostics. The flexibility of the network is demonstrated in that features can be added and removed without redesigning the whole system. A general description of the network's integration to a Joy' 16CM, Joy 14CM, Jeffrey 102, and a custom built auger machine is provided. The microcomputer networks for the Joy 16CM and the Jeffrey 102 have been installed onboard the mining machines and have been extensively tested at the Bureau of Mines test facility. The Jeffrey 102 system has also been tested in an actual highwall coal seam. Both systems have performed satisfactorily. The microcomputer networks for the Joy 14CM and the Auger Miner have been tested and await installation on the respective machines.

Automation and robotics are the keys to new intelligent autonomous mining systems which can remove operators from the hazardous and stressful mining environment and provide the tools for greater productivity. This pa-per presents the components necessary for a mining Intelligent Task Control System (ITCS) in dynamic unstructured mining environments. The proposed concept is applied to develop the ITCS for an autonomous excavator. The design and implementation of a fuzzy logic controller for an excavator that uses force/torque sensor feedback to complete excavation tasks is presented. Initial experimental results are also given.

The focus of this study was on the evaluation of hydrologic and environmental behavior observed in GeoWaste and waste rock test piles. GeoWaste is a mixture of fast-filtered tailings and waste rock prepared as a tailings-dominated mixture. The two test piles included potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock and were operated for 26 months to evaluate whether GeoWaste can suppresses sulfide oxidation and production of metal-rich acid mine drainage relative to PAG waste rock. The test piles were constructed in the shape of truncated 5-m-tall pyramids with 25-m base sides and flat 5-m × 5-m top surfaces. Water content, temperature, electrical conductivity, and oxygen concentration were monitored in four layers and at five locations within each layer in both test piles. In addition, 5-m × 5-m lysimeters were installed at the base of each pile to collect leachate. Approximately 2660 mm of water was added to the surfaces of the test piles via precipitation and irrigation (irrigation ≈ 1050 mm applied at an approximately constant rate for 70 days). The measured saturation, oxygen concentration, electrical conductivity, and temperature in the GeoWaste and waste rock piles suggest more sulfide oxidation occurred in the waste rock pile compared to the GeoWaste pile. Observations from the pile experiments suggest that co-managing mine waste in the form of GeoWaste reduced acid generation compared to waste rock alone due to the lower permeability and unsaturated state of the GeoWaste pile that reduced downward migration of moisture and inhibited drainage.

Mitchell Point Tunnel near Hood River, Oregon is one of the more unique segments of the Historic Columbia River Highway and State Trail being constructed through the Columbia River Gorge. This 650-foot bike/pedestrian tunnel set to open in 2024 is being delivered by FHWA in partnership with Oregon DOT, Oregon State Parks, and the U.S. Forest Service. Primarily driven using drill & blast excavation methods through basalt, the shotcrete and dowel-supported tunnel features masonry portals and ve window adits that provide illumination and views of the river similar to the original highway tunnel of many vistas built in 1915 that was removed in 1966 to make way for Interstate 84. This paper summarizes the planning, design, and construction.

But don?t let the North American part of the meeting?s title fool you. Many of the attendees will come from all over the world. The meeting is scheduled for June 24-27 at the JW Marriott Indianapolis Hotel in Indianapolis, IN. In addition to two and a half days of technical programming, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 116 exhibitors in 140 booths. And the conference will include short courses, a field trip and plenty of social activities that will give attendees the opportunity to catch up with each other.
