Turbulence in mechanical flotation cells, achieved via an impeller, plays a key role in keeping particles in suspension, dispersing air bubbles, and promoting particle-bubble collision. However, studying the hydrodynamics of a flotation cell is not a simple task, due to the complex nature of flotation systems which are opaque, turbulent, multiphase and polydisperse in terms of particle and bubble sizes. In this paper we study the impact of impeller design modifications on the hydrodynamics of a continuously overflowing bench-scale flotation tank. To this end, two different impeller designs, with and without a stator, were assessed using Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT). This allowed the authors to determine, for the first time, the effect of an impeller design on the behaviour of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic particle tracers. It was experimentally observed that the use of a stator modifies the hydrodynamics within the flotation cell, distorting the lower mixing loop that is characteristic of axial impellers. The role of the stator in dissipating turbulence results in reduced particle velocities outside of the impeller-stator region. These results have important implications for flotation cell design and are discussed in the context of the impact that different designs have on particle movement, flotation hydrodynamics and, ultimately, flotation performance. The paper describes a CFD model developed for 76mm Dense Medium Cyclone (DMC) using Ansys Fluent Software to gain insights into the separation of particles according to their size and density. The simulation used in this paper includes the Reynolds stress model to predict the turbulence inside the cyclone body. An Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase CFD model was applied to model a number of physical aspects such as the separation of coal particles and the segregation of magnetite media solids. The experimental results generated in a laboratory scale DMC were used for the validation purpose and the predicted results of CFD have been validated for the flow splits of water, magnetite and coal. The simulation results obtained from the Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase model revealed that the prediction agreed with experimental results, and matched reasonably well in terms of the mass flow rates of water, magnetite and coal. Furthermore, the partition curve of the DMC when mapped for the separation of - 3.0+0.50 mm size also showed to be in agreement with the experimentally obtained curves. The gravity of cut (SG50), also predicted by the Eulerian-Eulerain multiphase CFD model, was found to be in the vicinity of observed experimental value of SG50. The literature on shotcrete is reviewed with the object of identifying aspects that have not been addressed specifically in terms of its structural performance and manufacture as applied to underground mines. The programme and results of a series of full-scale tests on mesh- and fibre-reinforced shotcrete panels are presented, from which it is concluded that fibre-reinforced shotcrete is competent, especialy at large deformations, and is equivalent in structural performance to mesh-reinforced shotcrete for a fibre content of 3 per cent by mass: furthermore, that the support design systems developed for mesh-reinforced shotcrete are directly applicable to fibre-reinforced shotcrete. The Q-NATM system for the design of temporary tunnel support is presented briefly as one such system. It provides for the integrity of the excavation to be considered in terms of its competence and displacement determinateness, and represents the first systematic procedure for the design of temporary tunnel support. Finally, the support designed on the basis of the Q-NATM system for the main and cross-cut tunnels on the production level in the proposed BA5 block cave at Premier Mine is presented as a practical example of the design of fibre-reinforced shotcrete as part of an overall support system.

Improvements in the drilling and blasting techniques used in the stopes of narrow reefs have caused the clearing of broken rock to become the major cause of delay in the achievement of a regular cyclic operation. This paper discusses the development of a scoop in accordance with a predetermined set of performance parameters. The test results obtained to date have shown that the basic objectives have been achieved within tolerable limits of variation.

The application of excess shear stress as an aid to the design of mine layout is reviewed, and the critical parameters required to describe slip on a plane of weakness are noted. A design procedure that is required to model the cyclic build-up of excess shear stress is described. A number of simple examples of mine layouts on two reef planes intersecting a fault plane are then considered to illustrate the application of the design concept and to highlight some of the pitfals that may be encountered

The Grootegeluk coal-beneficiation plant was erected in the Waterberg coalfield, near Ellisras in the Transvaal, to supply Iscor's steelworks with a predetermined tonnage of coking coal in accordance with strict quality requirements. This plant has to handle a high tonnage of raw coal, which is not easy to beneficiate, in order to produce 1,82 X IQ6t of coal. Extensive tests were conducted on borehole cores and a mass sample of coal obtained from the area. These tests were carried out on a laboratory and pilot-plant scale, and were aimed at the establishment of the most effective beneficiation methods and the choice of suitable equipment. This led to the completion of a full set of design and manufacturing drawings that resulted in the project approach . described in this paper.

It is often said in business that if you don't have a customer you don't have a business. The same rule applies to project evaluation; if you don't have customers you really don't have a viable project. It is therefore essential that in the early stages of project evaluation the following fundamental questions are addressed: ? What products will this project produce? ? Who are the potential customers? ? What are the customers' requirements with respect to grade and impurities? ? Do they have adequate capacity to take the production from the proposed project? ? Will the products introduce adverse effects in the customer's process circuits? ? Will additional waste streams requiring disposal be produced? In the past the attitude has been along the lines of the customer will take whatever we produce at the mine site. Times have now changed with customers now operating under much tighter environmental regulation with waste disposal becoming increasingly difficult. It would therefore be prudent that the principles of product stewardship be used as a tool in project evaluation. This paper will provide a general discussion on customer requirements and provide detail on case studies of the impact of mine products on smelter process circuits. It will provide examples where there were synergies between the mine product and the smelter circuit and where the mine product had adverse impacts on smelter performance.

A method of estimating the percent solids in the discharge from a grinding mill is described and tested on both pilot and industrial scale. It involves the use of energy and mass balances around the mill discharge sump, requiring measurements of the flowrate and density from the sump together with temperatures of all streams flowing to and from the sump. Accurate estimates of the dynamic variation of mill discharge percent solids are made available, provided that occasional manual sampling of the stream is done to cope with drift in instrumentation. The use of a computer in this application was essential; the various advantages associated with its use are discussed. It is anticipated that this estimate of discharge density can be controlled at a set point by manipulation of the water fed to the mill, resulting in significant decreases in specific power consumption and media consumption.

Many mines engaged in deeplevel gold mining in South Africa are experimenting with the use of tailings fills, or are implementing tailings backfilling programmes on a limited scale. The approach varies from mine to mine, depending on circumstances and available fill materials. Several mines are backfilling with a cyclone underflow product; the cyclone overflow is then combined with the balance of the tailings stream and directed to surface disposal. As the extent of backfilling increases, the proportion of the surface tailings stream composed of overflow material will rise, and the properties of the tailings requiring surface disposal will approach those of the cyclone overflow. As the latter will be finer, less permeable and possibly weaker than the total tailings currently being disposed, the design and operation of surface tailings dams will have to be modified. Dams may have to be designed with flatter outer slopes of a reduced maximum height. Lower rates of rise may be required and, as a consequence, larger disposal areas may be demanded. To offset the negative aspects is the fact that the quantity of tailings requiring surface disposal will be reduced. The paper explores the dam-building properties of two cyclone overflow products. It shows that although these materials are inferior in dam-building characteristics to the corresponding total tailings, their geotechnical proper- ties still fall within, or close to, the range of properties typical of gold tailings. Although the design and operation of tailings dams may have to be modified, existing technology is adequate to handle these changes.

An overview of methods of manufacture is presented, as well as the results of laboratory experiments on the making of stainless clad steels. , It is concluded that stainless clad steel can be made in South Africa with existing rolling equipment, and that good bonding between the two materials depends on clean mating surfaces, proper edge welding, and a minimum reduction of 25 per cent at a rolling temperature of 120O"C. In practice, a minimum reduction of 70 per cent at 1100cC is recommended. : Suggested applications for clad steel include parts and equipment for the chemical, petrochemical, marine engineering, and mining industries, for the building sector, and for household appliances.

Noranda has been involved in the development of technologies for automated mining vehicles since 1988, and has contributed in transferring the technological foundation for the suite of SIAM products now being commercialized by STAS. Some of these technologies are now mature and available for commercial implementation in operations where a strong business case can be made for the use of automation. Noranda has successfully implemented or is commissioning the Tele-remote, Auto-loading and truck Guidance technologies at two of its operations, based on operating needs and economic justifications. Operator acceptance, training and maintenance issues have been addressed in order to ensure the reliability and availability of the automation components. These represent the most significant challenges encountered and addressed during the implementation period.

This paper describes in broad outline the development of a computer programme for determining the effects of changes in various factors in the condenser water circuit on the operation of a cooling plant. The programme is used to obtain design figures which result in minimum total power consumption. This was done for a range of different upcast air quantities, and the implications of low air quantities for heat rejection are discussed.

The excursions - Symposium on Ancient Mining and Metallurgy in Southern Africa by BERT WOODHOUSE Excursions add much to any symposium. They enable the participants to see something of the subject matter, and provide an opportunity for informal discussion and for the creation or renewal of friendships. In this respect the Ancient Mining Symposium was well provided for. There were two excursions and both were repeated to cope with the large number of participants.

The practice of refractory lining in Fe Cr furnaces is purely based on the behavior of various refractories used in different parts of the Furnace at elevated temperatures. The choice of the pattern of lining is mostly done on traditionally based concepts. Refractory Lining of a furnace is the most crucial enabler for operational excellence for Ferro Alloys production. During the last few years, no major technological change has taken place in ?Refractory Lining Management?, only freeze lining concept is becoming popular. Many ferro chrome furnaces today, have the refractory lining problems especially at tap holes, resulting in shutdowns and production losses. The author with his experiences for the last 37 years in furnaces of all sizes tried to attempt to investigate into the reasons for premature failure of lining.

Methods for the analysis of seismic hazards in mines are reviewed as illustrations of the techniques that are being used in some South African mines. The classical parameters that describe a hazard are the seismic activity rate, ?, the Gutenberg-Richter value, b, and, occasionally, the maximum regional magnitude, mmax The activity rate is calculated readily owing to the inherent simplicity of its definition. The evaluation method presented for the Gutenberg-Richter b value takes into account the presence of mmax Three statistical procedures are described for the assessment of mmax which the maximum observed magnitude, Xmax a crucial role. Often, the configuration of mine seismic networks is changed, or the networks are improved, which inevitably gives rise to changes in the completeness of the seismic catalogues. The routine analysis of seismic hazards must account for these time dependent changes. A method for the evaluation of hazards is reviewed that accommodates varying levels of quality in the catalogues. Finally, the concept of the volume of ground motion (VGM) is presented. This is a technique that allows for most aspects of seismic hazards in mines. The advantage of the VGM is that a hazard can be described by one physically significant value: the volume of rock (cumulated over a time period) in which the ground motion exceeds some critical particle velocity. Data from the gold mining region in South Africa known as the Far West Rand is used in a demonstration of the discussed methods of hazard analysis.
