Treatment of zinc silicates by the Waelz Process by J. E. CLAY (M.I.M.M.) (Visitor) and G. P. SCHOONRAAD. Pr. Eng.. B.Sc. Eng. (Rand) (Member) A review is given of the Waelz process. The chemistry of the process and the mechanism of crust formation (accretions) are briefly dealt with. The plant of Kiln Products Limited and its operation are described. The problems encountered and methods for their elimination are presented.

Three groups of unacclimatized men were subjected to five-day climatic-room procedures at wet-bulb temperatures of 29,30, and 31 C respectively. The findings indicated that individuals reach a satisfactory level of heat acclimatization for work in environmental temperature conforming to those at which they were acclimatized. It is, therefore, superfluous to acclimatize men at wet-bulb temperatures that exceed those at which they are destined to work. These methods of acclimatization can be linked advantageously to heat-tolerance testing at mines with suitable underground temperatures.

Most of the cyanide lost in carbon-In-pulp plants is due to the reaction of cyanide with base metals and sulphides during leaching. Some cyanide is also lost in the adsorption tanks as a result of oxidative and adsorption reactions with the activated carbon. The high rates of cyanide loss in the elution and electrowinning stages are atributable to hydrolytic decomposition and anodic oxidation, respectively. However, the relative amount of cyanide lost during these two stages is small for a given amount of ore treated.

The paper discusses the reasons for the introduction of load-haul-dump (LHD) units into Greenside Colliery, and the circumstances leading to the replacement of conventional mechanized equipment on a trial basis in the mining operations on No. 2, 4, and 5 seams. An outline is given of the factors governing the selection and introduction of these units into coal mining, and the associated mining and engineering aspects involved in the optimization of their use. Operating statistics comparing the performance of conventional and LHD equipment are included.

An Analytical Solution to the Batch comminution Equation R. P. King, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Eng.), M. Se. (Eng.), Ph.D. (Visitor). An analytical solution to the batch-grinding equation is presented in terms of the generalized hypergeometric series and the confluent hypergeometnc function. This solution is valid for selection functions that are describe~ piece-wise by functional forms of the type KOXB and by normalized breakage functions of the type B(x,x') = (x/x')x. These functional forms are sufficiently general to Include most practical cases. In particular, they can be used to describe selection functions that have a maximum.

Measurements of the rates of penetration at various throttle air pressures are presented as a function of thrust for three different rockdrills when drilling quartzites with strengths of 45 000 lb/in2 and 39 000 lb/in2, The rate of penetration at optimum thrust is shown to agree well with the predictions of theory and curves of air consumption as a function of throttle air pressure are presented. Man-held machines are shown to be under-thrusted at throttle air pressures above 40 lb/in2g. Measurements of bit wear as a function of distance drilled are presented graphically and discussed in terms of the theory developed in Part 1.

The ongoing revision of the Respirable Dust Regulations (RDR) by the UK coal mining industry includes the introduction of personal exposure monitoring for underground mines, rather than the fixed point sampling of workplaces. The initial choice CIP10 personal respirable sampler, failed during the underground trials because of the transfer of large non-respirable particles to the respirable dust deposit under vibration from man-riding belts, and of adverse effects of high winds and high dust loading on the flowrate through the sampler. These effects were validated in laboratory simulations of these conditions. A cyclone-based personal sampler is showing promise as an alternative.

In this paper the authors present their views on the actual and potential role of commodity analysis in mining industry. Owing to the dominant influence of the economy on all commodity markets, it is essential that individual commodities are studied not only in depth but within the broader context of economic influences. A commodity unit, which monitors market developments in a wide range of commodities, is well placed to provide the broader perspective in the study of commodity markets. This paper describes some of the specific functions of such a unit. Some of the methods used for price forecasting are described, and the results of price forecasts by different forecasting methods are compared.

SYNOPSIS The effect of conditioning energy on the flotation of gold, U308, and pyrite was investigated in the range 0,1 to 100 kWh per tonne of dry ore for various combinations of conditioning time and impeller speed in a cylindrical con¬ditioning tank. It was found that, when the conditioning energy was increased to between 5 and 10 kWh per tonne of dry ore, the total recovery and flotation rate of the valuable minerals (expressed as Klimpel parameters) increas¬ed substantially. The Klimpel parameters are dependent on conditioning energy, but are independent of condition¬ing time or impeller speed (at constant conditioning energy). The Klimpel parameters of the gangue are indepen¬dent of conditioning energy.

Results are presented on the elution of gold cyanide and base-metal cyanide complexes from strongand weakbase resins. It is shown that thiocyanate anions, zinc cyanide anions, and thiourea in acid solution are effective eluants of strong-base resins, but that it is generally necessary for electrowinning to be incorporated in the elution cycle if fast rates of elution are to be achieved. Weakbase resins are eluted with sodium hydroxide solution, which is shown to be far simpler and far more effective than the elution of strong-base resins. The effects of parameters such as concentration of the eluant, temperature, and electrowinning efficiency on the rate of elution of the resins are examined.

The Third International Conference on Coal Research was held in Sydney, Australia, in October 1976. The papers and proceedings of the Conference will be published in Australia on behalf of the International Committee for Coal Research in April 1977. The papers deal with the economics and practicability of coal conversion, coal winning, resources assessment, safety and dust, and coal and power generation, together with an appreciation of coal potential by the deputy chairman of the U.K. National Coal Board. Copies of the report are available to organizations within member countries of ICCR at a cost of 35 dollars (Australian), including postage, by application to the Executive Officer, Third ICCR, Box 3842 GPO Sydney, Australia 2001. The investment decision under uncertainty by H. M. WELLS, Pr. Eng., M.Se. (Fellow) The future outcome of a proposed investment is uncertain at the time the decision must be made to accept it or reject it. This uncertainty can be expressed in the form of a probability distribution. An attempt is made to rationalize the investment decision under these circumstances, especially when the range of possible outcomes extends into both the acceptable and unacceptable domains. A rigorous definition of risk is proposed, and a criterion of risk aversion is developed that forms the boundary between acceptable risk and unacceptable risk (called the loss limitation line). It is shown that this decision criterion can also serve as a quantitative yardstick in the evaluation of various possibilities for 'tailoring' the proposal to mlke it more compatible with the particular financial circumstances of the company concerned.

Some aspects of the mechanical behaviour of chromium-containing dual-phase 3CR12 steel were investigated as a function of the temperature and strain rate. The yield stress was found to depend on both the temperature and the strain rate, with no substantial differences between the longitudinal and the transverse directions. The strain-rate sensitivity decreased with increasing temperature. The yield stress could be presented as a function of a temperature-strain-rate parameter. Impact test results showed substantial differences between the energy absorption of the transverse and longitudinal specimens above the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Changes in energy absorption with temperature were gradual for specimens in both orientations, and the transition from ductile to brittle behaviour occurred between 373 and 173 K. Strain rates ahead of the tip of notches with different geometries were calculated and measured experimentally.

SYNOPSIS Wet high-intensity magnetic separation was examined as a method for the recovery of copper and lead from Tsumeb flotation tailings. Bench-scale and pilot-plant tests were conducted and, despite the very low magnetic susceptibilities of all the complex copper and lead minerals, copper and lead recoveries of over 60 per cent and almost 50 per cent respectively were obtained at a combined copper and lead grade of up to 13,5 per cent. The recoveries were found to be practically independent of magnetic induction in the range 0,5 to 2,2 T, and the grade of the magnetic concentrate decreased with increasing magnetic induction. The grade of the magnetic concen¬trate improved when the flowrate of the slurry was increased, and desliming was found to have a profound effect on the. metallurgical process. Particles smaller than 10 µm were not recovered, and their presence in inefficiently deslimed samples impaired the overall performance of the magnetic separation

A simplified two-dimensional plane strain numerical technique for the non- linear modelling of a tabular mining excavation in brittle host rock under high stress conditions is described. The model has been developed using relatively straightforward assumptions based on extensive underground investigation of the fracturing and deformation of rock at the stope face in deep gold mines on the Witwatersrand, together with observed rock behaviour under laboratory conditions. The reef rock is modelled as a linear string of yielding elements which interact horizontally, while the elastic rockmass remote from the reef is modelled using boundary element techniques. This elementary technique is shown to produce results which agree closely with the observed behaviour of the fractured rock during the mining of a remnant pillar

The audit included an evaluation of the appropriateness of the accounting policies, an examination, on a test basis, of evidence that supports the amounts and disclosures included in the financial statements, an assessment of the reasonableness of significant estimates, and a consideration of the appropri¬ateness of the overall financial statement presentation. We consider that our auditing procedures were appropriate in the circumstances to enable us to express our opinion presented here. This paper is the first in a series of three dealing with this subject and also with the rate of oxygen removal from the slags in the presence of solid carbon and with the physicochemical properties of the reduced slags. For selected members of the system, the melting temperatures and primary crystallization products were determined. as were the viscosity and the electrical resistivity of the corresponding melts. All the experiments were conducted in a neutral atmosphere. Where determined, the primary phase was found to be either perovskite or magnesium aluminium titanate. The composition variable exerting the most pronounced influence on viscosity or resistivity was found to be the basicity expressed as the mass ratio (CaO + MgO)jSiO,. The ratio CaOjMgO became important only at Iow basi<:ity values. Although generally there is a direct proportionality between log (viscosity) and log (resistivity), slags h&apos;lving either a very high silica content or a very high titania content have anomalously Iow electrical resistance.

Project-finance risk assessment is mature and approached systematically. Mining industry due diligence remains fragmented with specialists addressing different aspects of the project such as reserves/JORC, environmental impact, commodity market, even financial analysis/ modelling. Each professional has a natural tendency to believe that the risk factors they have examined are the key ones necessary to be reviewed, as if their review will stand in isolation from others in the way a project materialises. By first laying out the project risk categories and risk matrices, this paper examines the due diligence process with a keen eye to the risk assessment and overlap/interaction. Some cross fertilisation of due diligence techniques from other industry sectors is placed into the mining context. Six case studies are then presented with regards to due diligence features in each project&apos;s feasibility review or financial information/ offering memorandum. A power case first shows the differences between the due diligence expectations of banks versus bond financings. Then some Australian and Indonesian mining development cases are analysed to see the due diligence learning points. Some of these were project/due diligence failures. The conclusion focuses on the value of a systematic risk assessment for project evaluation, all from the project-finance perspective.
