"Blind headings in room and pillar coal mines are a major source of methane and coal dust. Most methane and coal dust explosions therefore occur in the blind headings. The primary cause of these explosions is the disruption of the local ventilation system. Line brattice (LB) ventilation systems are used to ventilate blind headings by directing air from the last through road (LTR) into the heading. The amount of air available to ventilate the face of the empty heading depends on the heading dimension, settings of the LB, and velocity of air in the LTR. LBs are commonly installed by underground supervisory staff based on work experience, which may result in ineffective ventilation. The correct installation of LBs remains a challenge.In this study, a validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model has been used to analyse the effect of the LB ventilation system variables on the air flow rates close to the face of the empty heading. Full-scale three-dimensional models with various heading heights, heading depths, LB settings, and LTR velocities were simulated. The air flow rates and patterns at various locations inside the heading were analysed. A comparative study was carried out to quantify the effect of each of these system variables on the flow rates close to the face of the heading. Based on the findings, a user-friendly numerical model was formulated that can be used to estimate the flow rate close to the face of an empty heading for different practical settings of the system variables. This model can help the supervisory staff to swiftly implement the ventilation plan according to the regulations and the mine standards. The model can also serve as part of the curriculum for educating future mining engineers."

The objective of this study was to develop, install, and test a small underground mobile refrigeration plant (MRP) to deal with some of the real problems associated with mine cooling in an operating mine. The requirement for cooling the underground environment is discussed with particular emphasis on the need for this method of cooling, with the concomitant benefits. The research investigated current methods of cooling and reasons for previous failures in MRP. Both static and dynamic simulations were conducted to increase the confidence level under operating conditions. Implementation and testing, resulted in ?lessons learnt? requiring modifications, which are documented. Actual results have been recorded. These results have proved that significant cooling via MRP is feasible. Main benefits include positional efficiency, cost per kilowatt of cooling and cooling opportunities for remote hot areas of a mine. Finally, a proven technology is now available for large-scale implementation in the mining industry. Now the ventilation engineer has another system of cooling, which can be utilized in the quest to create an occupational environment, which meets the physical and mental health requirements of the worker.

The titanium industry demands high titanium feedstock for their processes. As rutile resources are limited, ilmenite has become the most important titanium source. Ilmenite smelting is an important part of upgrading ilmenite to high titanium feedstock. In the year 2005, upgrading of ilmenite by smelting, producing a slag with 80-90% Ti02, accounted for approximately 40% of the feedstock to the Ti02 pigment industry. In ilmenite smelting molten iron is produced together with a slag, which in addition to titanium oxide contains iron oxide as well as various impurity oxides of manganese, magnesium, silicon, aluminium, etc. Titanium is present mainly as Ti02 but partly also as Ti203. It is known that the concentration of Ti203 increases with decreasing concentration of FeO, but this dependency is affected by the nature of the impurity oxides. Sigurdson and Moore1 showed that slags high in CaO and MgO had a lower concentration of Ti203 than slags high in Si02 for the same amount of FeO. Pistorius2 showed in 2002 that if the impurity oxides MnO and MgO are counted, on a molar basis, as FeO, and Cr203, V203 and part of the A1203*), as Ti203, industrial slags will have a composition close to that of the M305 phase, where M denotes the elements Ti, Fe, Mn, etc, and which has the pseudobrookite structure. However, for equilibrium with liquid metallic iron he computed, by means of a computer program FACT, that the slag equilibrium composition is represented by a curved line in the ternary phase diagram FeTi03-TiO2-Ti2O3, but with a significantly higher concentration of trivalent titanium than actually observed in the industrial slags, and he discussed various mechanisms by which the slag during solidification could change its composition to a lower Ti203 content, but the possibility that the computed compositions might be wrong was not mentioned. Trane113 found in her research on titaniferous silicate slags a lower Ti3+/ Ti4+ ratio than that which is computed by the FACT program. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the equilibrium composition of Fe-Ti-O slag in equilibrium with liquid metallic iron, as well as the effects of impurities such as Si02, CaO and MgO on the slag composition. Industrial slags from TINFOS Titan and Iron KS (TTI) will also be discussed and their compositions will be plotted in the ternary phase diagram. These are slags produced from Tellnes ilmenite, quite high in magnesium and iron. Experimental In the past, equilibrium studies of the Fe-Ti-O slag system were difficult when it came to producing the slag. It was difficult to find a suitable crucible for the meltings. The highly corrosive slag would attack all known refractories, and the metal would attack metallic crucibles such as those made of platinum and molybdenum. In the present investigations the slag-metal combination was prepared in a high-frequency induction furnace with a vertically segmented water-cooled copper crucible. The crucible is shown in Figures 1 a and 1b. It was designed by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) with power from a 75 kVA high-frequency generator (750 kHz) supplied by Farfield Electronics Pty, Ltd, Australia. It is almost eight years to the day when we launched the original SAMREC Code in March 2000. Since that date I think the SA minerals industry has matured beyond recognition in its approach to reserve and resource reporting, and I believe we can be justifiably proud of that progress. Many of those companies that have led the way in reporting standards are listed on our sponsors list. We thank them for their sponsorship but even more for their considerable support in all aspects of the SAMCODE organization. Matt Mullins, my co-speaker here today, has been instrumental in the revision of the SAMREC Code over a long period of time and also took up the reigns with the SAMVAL Code after the retirement of Rob Croll. I would like to formally thank Matt for his immense contribution in producing the two Codes; he can take great pride in the final product and fully deserves the many accolades that we have already received from our international counterparts. He has done all this whilst still maintaining a very demanding day job at BHPBilliton. Matt will be the first to admit that he has received tremendous support from more than 100 people who participated in the various working groups, many of whom are employed by our sponsors. There are obviously too many to mention by name but they deserve a big vote of thanks for their personal contributions. Approximately 850 groundwater samples were collected over a 29 300 km2 region of the semi-arid Northwestern Cape during the site selection phase of the South African radioactive waste disposal project. The purpose of the geostatistical investigation was primarily to delineate metallogenic occurrences and provinces which might exist below the thin veneer of surficial material and could thus interfere with the suitability of the site, and to quantify the distribution patterns of groundwater parameters in order to establish a relationship to local and regional geology. Up to 34 variables were analysed for each sample. Structural analysis revealed that the study area is statistically uniform. The variables have low correlation coefficients, with the exception of major ions, indicating a general poor degree of interrelationship between the spatial distribution patterns of the different variables. On the other hand, the long semivariogram range of the majority of variables, which reaches 70 km in cases, demonstrates their continuity on a regional scale. Kriging, which was repeated for each parameter, reveals that most variables, particularly trace metals, have distribution trends which are not influenced by local geomorphology or surface lithology. A 50 km wide, 220 km long metallogenic province, defined by kriging, could possibly reflect a broad metallogenic imprint on the basement and could represent a target area for prospecting. Kriging also reveals the possible existence of a wrench faulting system which may well have influenced the Namaqualand coastal graben and the western boundary of the Karoo.

The development of short- and medium-term mine production schedules in isolation from each other has meant that only a local optimum can be achieved when each scheduling phase is carried out. The globally optimal solution, however, can be achieved when integrating scheduling phases and accounting for the interaction between short-term and medium-term activities simultaneously. This paper addresses the task of integrating short- and medium-term production plans by combining the short-term objective of minimizing deviation from targeted mill feed grade with the medium-term objective of maximizing net present value (NPV) into a single mathematical optimization model. A conceptual sublevel stoping operation comprising 30 stopes is used for trialling segregated and integrated scheduling approaches. Segregated medium- and short-term scheduling using separate models achieved an NPV of $42 654 456. The final scheduling approach involved integrating the two scheduling horizons using the newly-developed globally optimal integrated production scheduling model to achieve an NPV of $42 823 657 with smoother mill feed grade. The larger the stope data set, the larger the difference between the two scheduling approaches is likely to be. At the very least, an integrated approach ensures feasibility across the two scheduling horizons, which cannot always be assumed when using a segregated approach.

Western Deep Levels (North) is a deeplevel, longwall gold mine. Severe strata control problems and high rates of elastic closure, resulting in high rates of energy release, are associated with mining at depths of up to 3 500 metres. To assist in controlling these aspects of mine design and safety, a waste backfilling system has been designed and commissioned. The integration of such a system into an existing, producing longwall brings many problems of logistics, organization, planning and control. It is the purpose of this paper to examine these aspects of fill management, and to describe some of the practical problems involved with the integration of this project into the mining environment. Although many of the rock mechanics and soil mechanics aspects of backfilling systems are common there are specific problems involved which apply to longwall systems. Very strict guidelines are required for planning personnel to design their backfilling systems for a particular situation. These aspects are examined, and basic models developed which can be used without the necessity of comprehensive input from rock mechanics. A summary of the financial implications is included, and these are examined with regard to possible future applications and expansion of waste filling.

Although the De Beers group has a long history of placer mining on land, the group only became actively involved in deep water marine diamond exploration and mining in1983 with the formation of De Beers Marine. Full-scale commercial mining commenced around 1991. Since then, the group marine mining capability has grown into a formidable fleet of 8 large deep water (>70 m) mining vessels, as well as other special purpose geo-survey platforms. Marine diamond production by the group is expected to be just short of 1 million carats in 2006. DeBeers operates across the entire value-chain spectrum from geology and geo-survey, through sampling to mining, and finally ore processing into high value concentrate. Supporting these operations involves significant service activities such as maintenance, security, logistics and environmental management. Specific challenges exist in terms of developing or acquiring appropriate technology for marine mining. These challenges have resulted in DeBeers operating extensive in-house R&D and projects departments, as well as drawing extensively from technology partners. An array of computational and test facilities are also available to support R&D and projects activities. Hydro transport in various guises is key to the current approaches to marine mining and ore processing. Use is made of airlift and centrifugal pumping for hydraulic hoisting of very coarse gravel, while splitters, launders, dewatering, elutriators, jet-pumps, centrifugal pumps, dense medium circuits, pipeline systems, and instrumentation for coarse abrasive particles are used extensively in the ore processing plant.

With the advent of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) in Denmark in 2003 and the subsequent biannual meetings, together with other sampling conferences held on a regular basis, the central tenets of sound sampling practice and theory are spreading throughout the minerals industry. End-users and project houses, or groups who execute the projects, are all now better-informed about the principles of ?correct? sampling and preparation. To support this, many large mining companies now have their own in-house champion who will advise and ensure that the supply of sampling equipment is correct in terms of design and application, which further contributes to improved metallurgical accounting. The presence of a sampling champion also ensures that consistent and acceptable standards in regard to sampling practice are maintained throughout the group. This has, in turn, placed a greater degree of responsibility on the shoulders of sampling equipment suppliers, in terms of their equipment designs and product offerings, as well as applications knowledge for effective installation of equipment on client plants. This paper attempts to highlight the significant challenges that sampling equipment manufacturers often face with regard to complying with the newly understood requirements of best practice and sampling equipment design. Manufacturers invariably face issues with end-users or project houses, including project cost control, restricted headroom for samplers in plant layouts, and a lack of knowledge in certain quarters. These all have a potentially negative effect on the final outcome of a proposed sampling solution or implemented project. In reality, what is intended by all parties and what is ultimately installed are at times very different, with undesirable consequences for all concerned. Against this challenging background, there are, however, a number of instances where intent and implementation are complementary, with very satisfactory results. "The ventilation of underground coal mines plays an important role in minimizing the risk of methane and coal dust explosions. The ability of ventilation, with the use of line brattices (LBs), to remove methane and coal dust in empty headings is dependent on the amount of air leaving the LB and entering the heading. The quantity of this air depends on the associated system variables, namely heading dimensions, settings of the LB, and velocity of air in the last through road (LTR). However, the exact effect of these system variables on the flow rate at the exit of the LB in an empty heading is not known. The installation of LBs in South African coal mines is generally carried out based on experience. This can result in overor under-ventilation and may increase the cost of providing ventilation or cause accidents, respectively. In this paper, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the air flow rate at the exit of the LB in an empty heading was estimated using full-scale three-dimensional models. The CFD model used was validated using experimental results Firstly, the settings of these three system variables were varied, the flow rates at the exit of the LB were measured, and finally the results were used to calculate the effect of each system variable. The outcome is a mathematical formula that can be used to estimate air flow rate at the exit of the LB in empty headings for any practical scenario.This paper will help the coal mining sector in South Africa by providing estimation models based on scientific reasoning for the installation of LBs, and will also serve academia as part of the curriculum towards educating future mining engineers."

The Samarco pipeline, the longest in the world for iron ore slurry transportation, started operation in 1977 to transport concentrate from the Germano facilities, in the state of Minas Gerais, to the pelletizing plant, located 396 km away, in the state of Espirito Santo, on the south-east coast of Brazil. Designed for a nominal capacity of 12 million tons per year, the pipeline reached 15.5 million/year due to operational improvement and, in late 2005, it was resized to transport 16.5 million tons per year, with the installation of a booster station. In order to ensure the accurate performance of the system, a pipeline cleaning programme was carried out and, since it has been29 years from the operation start-up, precise knowledge of the pipe condition would be fundamental to guarantee the success of the project. The cleaning programme demonstrated the potential of operational gains from this initiative, and its effect on the corrosion control and future measures, which should be permanently adopted to maintain the improved capacity. The intelligent pig runs provided essential data used to establish a pipeline integrity programme that allowed Samarco to develop a pipe repair plan based on the severity and significance of the features and to implement a future pipe replacement plan.

"Through the application of the Rietveld method, X-ray diffraction analysis has developed into a fully quantitative method for phase analysis. The Rietveld method itself has progressed from an unstable method that required constant operator intervention to a stable and robust method suited even for routine analysis. The method however, requires a good initial calibration and periodic checks on its precision and accuracy.Several examples from minerals processing, pyrometallurgy, and materials science show the strengths and applicability of the method. The limitations and sources of error are also discussed.1. IntroductionDiffraction of X-rays by matter has been used for more than 80 years, initially to elucidate the structure of crystalline matter, and to investigate the bonding between atoms. The first development of powder diffraction cameras and the later development of X-ray diffractometers saw the development of methods to identify phases and to try to quantify them in mixtures. A comprehensive database and search-match techniques have been developed over the ensuing years. Effective and accurate quantification had to wait for the so-called Rietveld' analysis where the total diffraction pattern is used and where the crystal structure data for the constituent phases are needed as input. Overlapping of diffraction peaks of different phases is handled without difficulty and reliable results can be obtained in spite of this occurrence.The development of methods for structure analysis from powder data has also progressed rapidly and more and more complex structures are being solved from first principles, i.e. without knowledge of unit cell or space group data. Because of the ease of use of the Rietveld method, it is finding increased application in metallurgy, especially in the quantification of phases of importance in minerals processing, in pyrometallurgical processes, and in materials characterization. This study will examine the principles of the Rietveld method, its application in metallurgy, and finally also the common pitfalls that need to be avoided.2. Rietve1d AnalysisAs the Rietveld method compares the experimental diffraction pattern with one calculated from known crystal structure data, the following data are needed:•,An XRD Pattern with as Iowa background as possible. This should have good resolution and high diffraction peak intensities. With modem X-ray detectors, this can be achieved in minutes rather than hours.•,Instrumental parameters such as goniometer radii and slit sizes are needed. These are the so-called ""Fundamental parameters"". They are used to calculate the shapes of the resultant diffraction peak profiles that are caused by the instrument. The parameters are used to correctly separate the instrumental effects on the diffraction pattern from the sample effects."

Managers need quality information for effective decision making. This demand, at the present time, is being fulfilled by the increased use of computers via information systems, decision support systems and management information systems. The idea of incorporating intelligence into computers to aid decision-makers has been evolving for over two decades. In recent years, significant progress is reported on applications to business and sciences. In engineering functions, the Artificial Intelligence approach that seems to have great potential is the application of Knowledge Based Systems. The primary objective of this paper is to identify domains in mining engineering where application of knowledge based systems could be beneficial. In- corporation of the expertise required during the analysis and interpretation stages of an engineering design problem through knowledge based systems is recognized as an area of significant benefit. To this end, the components of knowledge based systems for mine ventilation and strata control design are described. The potential applications and limitations of knowledge based systems are outlined.

There are many potential uses in gold mining for an initially stiff element of backfill that will yield at a predetermined load and maintain that load to beyond a compression of 30%. Such elements could be used as yielding rib pillars, as replacements for more conventional supporting packs, as con- fining bulkheads for mass backfill, as supports to provide lateral constraint, and load-carrying augmentation to overloaded rock pillars. The paper describes a system of reinforced cemented backfill that can be used to provide the above requirements. The necessary characteristics of the reinforcing and the cemented tailings are described together with the method of design to obtain a predetermined stiffness and yield load. The load-compression characteristics of the reinforced tailings elements are described and the effect of changing various of the design parameters is demonstrated.

Microwave technology has for decades been a tool for astronomers to map and understand the complexities of the universe its composition and extent. It is also used on a laboratory scale by spectroscopists to examine properties of atomic and molecular compounds. In this novel work we will introduce microwave technology to be used for the investigation of liquid slag structures. The preliminary results indicate that the alteration of the slag composition could be correlated to the measured microwave refractive index. Gas samples were taken from a wide range of target areas on dumps arising from coal mining activities. Some of the dumps had largely burned out, some were still burning, some were in the process of rehabilitation, and on others rehabilitation was essentially complete. It was found that rehabilitation was very effective in reducing emissions to tolerable levels. Even incomplete rehabilitation reduced the CO2 emissions to less than about 1 kg/m2/a, whereas some unrehabilitated areas showed emissions of over 100 kg/m2/a. Some areas where there was active combustion taking place were also sampled, and they showed as much as 7 000 kg/m2/a, but the areas concerned were very small and their total contribution accordingly low. Analyses were also made for SOx, NOx, NH3, and CH4, but these were generally (and unexpectedly) at very low levels. The mines sampled represented 53 per cent of all surface coal mining activity. Accordingly the estimated total emissions were scaled up, to arrive at estimates of 1950 000 ± 350 000 t/a C02, 2040 ± 580 t/a SOx, 306 ± 85t/a NOx, and 31 ± 9 t/a NH3 for all surface mines. Methane was detected only from burning coal, and due to the difficulty in sampling, no reliable estimate could be made of these methane emissions.

Ground water and associated pore pressure represent elements which can have a negative impact on surface mining and slope stability. Ground water flow and deformation within a slope influence each other. An increase in pore pressure will result in a decrease of effective stress; and conversely if the pore pressure decreases, the effective stress increases. Slope analysis and slope design calculations require good information on pore pressure distribution around an open pit excavation. Until recently very little pore pressure data was available and assumptions had to be used. Location and design of measuring points depend on geological and structural setting, geotechnical domains and practicality. Good planning and the use of sensitive point piezometers to measure in situ pore pressures means that real-time data can be collected and used for the construction of flow nets, the determination of pore pressure distribution around an open pit mine, the validation of the dewatering/depressurization requirements, the calculation of the efficiency of the dewatering system and finally the use of pore pressure data in slope stability analysis. The recommended layout for a monitoring system, types and design of piezometers, data collection and use of the pore pressure data are presented.

It is argued that the present value of the future corporate income tax flow derived from mineral exploitation may serve as a useful indicator in moving toward a taxation policy that would contribute optimally toward the greatest public benefit.The future stream of corporate income taxes depends largely on the mineral endowment, consisting of deposits now being mined, known unmined deposits, and unknown deposits.Unknown deposits may be estimated by geological inference. Both known and unknown deposits can be categorized according to grade and size, and divided into economic and uneconomic deposits on the basis of certain prices, costs, rate of return and taxation levels.Computer simulations can be run of discounted cash flow models at various taxation levels to show the impact of taxation changes on future tax revenues."

Over the past few decades the commercial application of heap bioleaching technology for the extraction of base metals has become increasingly important, due mainly to the depletion of high-grade ore reserves. Heap bioleaching is widely used for the extraction of copper from secondary copper sulphide ores. The design and engineering aspects of the process have received considerable attention, but issues related to the microbiology of the process have been subjected to less rigorous scrutiny. The major role of micro-organisms in bioleaching processes is to catalyse the regeneration of ferric iron and protons, from ferrous iron and by sulphur oxidation respectively. It is accepted that even the most carefully engineered heaps are heterogeneous in terms of temperature, pH, the presence of anaerobic pockets, irrigation efficiency, and dissolved solutes. Since interactions between solution chemistry, mineralogy, and microbial populations exist in heaps, a better understanding of the correlation between microbial numbers and types with changes in these chemical and physical profiles with time would be beneficial during process design and operation of heaps, and could result in faster start-up times and higher metal recoveries. This paper reviews the role of microbiology in heap bioleaching processes. Aspects such as microbial diversity, identification and monitoring of cultures, inoculation strategies, colonization behaviour, and tolerance to metals and salts are discussed, and the potential contribution of the knowledge to the improvement of the operation and design of heap bioleach processes assessed. Conclusions are drawn with respect to the role of genetic engineering, heap inoculation practises, and remaining areas for future heap bioleaching research and development.

Future development of kimberlite mines is now focused on mining at deeper levels. The consequences are increased difficulty and costs of the mining operations. The decisions on investments require accurate resource evaluation and quantification of the risk. In the decision process the first step consists in choosing the number of boreholes sampling the pipe relative to the level of uncertainty that can be accepted. The uncertainty in the volumes of rocks of different types can be assessed as soon as we can estimate these volumes from a given borehole layout and calculate the error by means of its variance for instance. In theory this can be achieved by using geostatistical techniques (‘transitive theory’), but in practice the calculation of the error on volumes can be achieved in very particular cases, assuming some regular sampling patterns. A different approach has been chosen based on simulations, giving maximum flexibility to reproduce the reality of the sampling procedure. The idea is to simulate the geometry of several ‘possible’ pipes with their internal geology and estimate them by kriging. Several experimental errors are obtained on which risk analysis can be performed. The aim is to find a feasible method to perform the simulations with reasonable chance to correctly represent the reality, without data on the pipe extension. The methodology applied is based on some hypotheses that can be assessed by the geologist as well as by the geostatistician. The procedure assumes a geological model based on current knowledge including appropriate geostatistical variation. What make these simulations specific and powerful in this case comes from the fact that the boundaries between the different rock-types can be simulated using a transformation of the real 3D space into a 2D space defined by means of polar coordinates. Ultimate transformations to account for smoother variations with morphological transformations allow the generation of realistic pipe geometries on which sampling pattern can be used to evaluate the estimation errors. By estimating the simulated pipe geometries with different boreholes layouts a risk curve expressing the uncertainty in the volumes of the different rock-types versus the number of holes can be developed.
