Deposits of copper-porphyry type occupy a leading position in the mineral resource base of the world copper industry. They are characterized by large and gigantic scales, often complex composition, their development is carried out in an open way. The raw material base of the Russian copper industry is mainly sulfide copper-Nickel and copper-pyrite ores. Exploration of copper-porphyry deposits and the creation of long-term large mining facilities on their basis is one of the most promising and priority tasks for the Russian industry. This task is especially acute for the copper enterprises of the Urals in connection with the depletion of copper - pyrite ore reserves. In recent years, Russia has carried out a large complex of studies on the composition and technology of processing of copper-porphyry ores of different subtypes. In this work the complex poor copper-molybdenum-gold ore of one of the deposits is investigated. The chemical and mineral composition of the ore containing 0.49% copper, 0.020% molybdenum, 0.39 g/t gold, 5.85 g/t silver was determined. The forms of finding metals and their distribution by size classes are established. The dependence of extraction of metals into concentrates of collective-selective flotation on the size of ore grinding, pH of the medium, reagent consumption is shown. Under optimal flotation conditions, copper concentrate with 18.6% copper content and 92.32% extraction and molybdenum concentrate with 21.5% molybdenum content and 73.4% extraction were obtained. With a high concentration of molybdenum in selective flotation products, it is possible to conclude about the expected molybdenum concentrate with a content of 45% and a recovery of 70%. The associated extraction of gold and silver into copper concentrate is 76.8 % and 73.4%. Keywords: Collective-selective flotation, copper, molybdenum, porphyry ore, grinding, pH, reagents

The programme, designed to give an overview of the industry and the part played by Zincor, comprised an introductory talk, a technical talk, a tour of the plant, and a luncheon. Radioactive waste in arid regions A conference on the disposal of radioactive waste in arid areas will be held in Cape Town during the period 7th to 12th September, 1986. It is recommended that engineers and scientists avail themselves of the opportunity to familiarize themselves with this relatively new multidisciplinary field of endeavor by attending the first ever conference of this nature to be held in South Africa. Iron control in hydro metallurgy The International Symposium on Iron Control in Hydrometalurgy will be held at the 16th Hydrometallurgical Meeting, from 19th to 22nd October, 1986, in Toronto, Canada.

"Intensive mining of shallow coal seams tends to result in severe subsidence of the ground surface. Surface subsidence is a complex dynamic spatiotemporal process that constantly changes as mining advances. With Liangshuijing coal mine as a case study, 3DEC numerical software was used to simulate the development of the moving subsidence field from open-off cut to full subsidence on the working face. The results demonstrate that the formation of a subsidence field is directly related to the coal seam depth H and the extent of the mine workings. Taking the advance distance of the working face as the unit of scale, the process of surface subsidence can be divided into four stages: micro-change (H/ p), the development of surface subsidence (2H/ p), the formation of a movement subsidence field (3H/ p), and dynamic balance (4H/ p). The changing movement of a subsidence field can be fully described by the characteristics of surface subsidence value, curve slope, and the inflection position. The results provide important technical support for predicting surface subsidence and the temporal–spatial evolution features of mining subsidence. IntroductionChina’s coal output was about 3.52 Gt in 2017 (China National Coal Association, 2018), making it the largest coal producer in the world, accounting for almost half of total world coal production. Coal production and distribution play a vital role in the energy industry of China. However, entire overlying strata, from coal seam to surface, are disturbed as a result of long-term, high-intensity and large-scale mining, causing surface subsidence. This results in groundwater loss, surface desertification, vegetation loss, and mud-rock flows. These issues have become topics of common concern throughout society. According to related research results (Liu 2008), the area of surface subsidence caused by coal mining in China has reached about 600 000 ha, some 0.2 ha (and up to 0.42 ha) of surface subsidence for every 10 000 t of coal produced. Surface subsidence disasters not only damage buildings, water conservancy, transportation infrastructure, and farmland, but also cause adverse effects on individual and community lifestyles, environmental hygiene, and economic development. Deterioration of the ecological environment in mining areas has a long history and is very harmful (Lu, 2015)."

It is well known that these hoes were used for barter, and as currency in the purchase of livestock or the payment of lobolo, although reports of the value of the hoes differ widely. The difficulty in their classification has arisen from their distribution over a very wide area.

The treatment of gold-plant tailings with ferrous sulphate to remove the cyanide is currently in use, on several gold plants. In some cases there is scope for optimization the process. The present work provides a detailed study of the reaction between cyanide and ferrous sulphate. Optimal conditions for the removal of total cyande required a ph of 5,.5 to 6,5 and an Fe:CN molar ratio of 0,5. Ferrocyanide ion is shown to be unstable In aqueous acidic solution, with rapid oxidation to ferricyanide, (Fe(CN) 6 ), and formation .of Fe(CN)5H2O3- at pH values below 4, The precipitate from the reaction between cyanide and ferrous sulphate consists mainly 01 Insoluble Prussian blue, Fe4[Fe(CNI&!.3,and IS shown to be unstable in the presence of alkaline solution, since it decomposes rapidly at pH values above 7 to form ferrocyanide, (Fe(CN)6 ), in solution and various insoluble iron oxides,

The philosophy behind the design of a rougher cell for the handling of coarse feed and for the maximization of recovery within a given time is presented. The application of this philosophy in cells of 22-litre, 320-litre, and 3 m3 capacity is outlined, and the results of the process testing of these cells are given. In this testing, particular accent was placed on the recovery of water as a guide to the recovery of the finest size of particles, and the rate of recovery of various mineral species. It is concluded that a promising concept has been identified, but that further testing is needed for the firmer establishment of optimal operational parameters in a production environment.

Interpretation of Leached Outcrops, by Roland Blanchard. Published by Nevada Bureau of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada, 89507, 1968, 188 pages. Price $7.50 (R5.40). This book contains a summary of the author's knowledge of leached outcrops, derived from some 30 years' experience as a geologist operating mainly in the United States of America and Australia. Part 1 of the book provides a comprehensive coverage of the various processes and substances involved in the oxidation of many minerals, under different climatic conditions, to form the final leached products. In Part 2, details are given of the appearance and composition of the oxidation products of the following minerals: pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, cha1copyrite, cha1cocite, bornite, tetrahedrite, oxidized copper minerals, galena, cerussite, sphalerite, molybdenite, chromite, hematite, magnetite, manganite, pyrolusite, calcite, siderite, fluorite, salite and supergene silica. The illustrations, the black and white photographs and the colour plates of oxidation products are of a high standard. The material is presented in a logical order and in terms which are not over-technical; hence it is useful to persons other than trained geologists. Despite the advances in geophysical and geochemical prospecting, the location and interpretation of gossans remains an important method of discovering ore bodies, particularly so since the correct interpretation of a leached material can prevent the fruitless and expensive prospecting of an underlying body of uneconomic concentration. Therefore it is considered that this volume will be a valuable addition to the libraries of universities, exploration companies and geologists. It is of interest to note that the author, who died in 1966, presented a paper, under the same title as this book, to the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa in 1939. "A well-performing solvent-extraction circuit is a key part of producing good quality copper cathode. To ensure consistent operation, a good understanding of the circuit’s operation and an ability to rapidly troubleshoot key parameters is required. This paper briefly discusses the modeling of solventextraction circuits. The paper then goes on to discuss the determination of key performance parameters from plant data and comparing these with the circuit models to quantify circuit performance. The identification and troubleshooting of circuit issues is presented with a worked example. INTRODUCTIONA well-performing solvent-extraction (SX) circuit is a key part of producing good quality copper cathode. To ensure a consistent, high-quality operation, a good understanding of the circuit performance is required. Evaluating the performance of an SX circuit is an extensive topic. The objective of this paper is to focus on the evaluation that the metallurgist should be performing on a regular basis using flow and concentration data. This paper does not cover important topics, such as crud management, phase continuity, or organic management. Some basic SX modeling concepts are first be presented. The calculation of the parameters is then presented with a brief discussion and recommended ranges (where applicable). A worked example is used to provide a basis for further discussion on the evaluation of the calculated parameters and use of data collected.BASIC SOLVENT-EXTRACTION MODELING CONCEPTSThis section presents the basic modeling concepts used in SX simulation packages currently available. SX reagent suppliers have invested significant time and effort into collecting data on the performance of their reagents under different conditions. Based on these data, suppliers have developed packages which they normally make available to their clients for free. These are typically used for process design and plant optimization studies. For example, BASF developed ISOCALCTM and CYTEC Industries developed MINCHEM® and MEUMTM.Chemistry of Copper Solvent ExtractionLiquid–liquid extraction involves the selective transfer of a substance between two immiscible liquid phases by controlling the relative solubility in each phase. In the case of copper SX, the exchange is typically achieved by an oxime-based chelating mechanism. In particular, mixtures of aldoxime and ketoxime are normally used in conjunction with modifiers. More detail on this extensive topic can be found in Schlesinger et al. (2011)."

The objective of ergonomics is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency with which human tasks are carried out. Furthermore, the objective is to improve desirable human values. This can be achieved by enhancing safety, reducing fatigue and stress, increasing comfort, increasing job satisfaction, having greater user acceptance and thereby improving the quality of life. Mechanization has influenced the prevalence of injury, mainly due to the application of human physical effort as the power source. With mechanization, the operator’s function is now essentially one of control rather than being an energy source, however the risk of injury has not diminished. Mechanization in itself has introduced inefficiencies, health risks and physiological stress. The major objectives of ergonomics are discussed through examples of acceptable and less successful implementation of ergonomics within mechanized mining. The influence of the machine system on the human is addressed and practical solutions to improve and optimize the interaction of the human and the machine are outlined. Furthermore, practical examples of control and display integration, anthropometric and biomechanic influences on design, orientation, posture and stereotypes are used to accentuate the advantages of the application of sound ergonomics principles to the specialised area of mechanized mining.

For the past 12 years, the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town have hosted an annual symposium to discuss research topics in Minerals Processing. Since 1987, this meeting has been held under the auspices of the Western Cape Branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and has enjoyed much national and international support. In 1993, in place of the usual Symposium, the Branch and Universities collaborated with CSM Associates Ltd and Minerals Engineering Journal is organizing the international Minerals Engineering '93 Conference in Cape Town.

The theory of geostatistics covers a branch of .applied statistics aimed at a mathematical description and analysis of geological observations. Geostatistics can be used in pure geology (for example, for the analysis of trace elements in a metamorphic rock), in mineral exploration (for example, for the analysis of geochemical exploration data), as well as in mine valuation. This book is intended to provide a practical introduction to the theory of geostatistical methods of mineral evaluation. Over the years, various mathematical models have been developed to represent the distribution of values in mineral deposits. The simpler models are based on the assumption that the values are randomly distributed. Classical statistical methods, based on this assumption of the random distribution of values, are used to analyse mineral deposits to which these models apply or are assumed to apply. In all mineral deposits, however, one recognizes the presence of areas where the values are higher or lower than elsewhere. Also, the values of two samples in a mineral deposit are more likely to be similar if the samples are taken close together than if they are taken far apart. This indicates that there exists a degree of correlation between sample values, and that this correlation is a function of the distance between the samples. Models have been developed which take this correlation into consideration, with the degree of correlation between sample values being usually measured by the semivariogram function. In these models the fact that two samples taken next to each other will most probably not have the same value, must also be considered; even for very short distances the correlations are usually not perfect and a purely random component is present in the value distribution. The mathematical models will therefore assume the presence of two sources of variability in the values: a correlated component and a random component. Finally, one must consider the particular and very common case of mineral deposits in which the values present a systematic variation in space. This variation is usually referred to as a drift, or a trend. For example, the grade of an ore body may increase with depth of the ore, or it may decrease when one moves away from a central volcanic pipe. The earlier models did not give a satisfactory representation of drifts, and more complex models have been developed, in which three sources of variation are represented. These models are made up of: a deterministic component, a correlated component, and a random component. The deterministic component is used as a model of the drift. The correlated component explains regular changes in values which are not represented by the drift. The random component represents variations which cannot be explained by any of the above factors. The simpler models, based on the assumption of a single random component, will be described first (Chapter 2). The models based on the hypothesis of the superimposition of a correlated component on a random component, will then be analysed in detail. These models are most commonly used in the analysis of mineral deposits (Chapters 3-1 I). Finally, how to deal with the presence of a drift will be briefly described (Chapter 12). This book has been written essentially for students in mining engineering and for mining engineers who are interested in the background to the theory of geostatistics as well as its practical applications. The assumption is made that the reader has an elementary knowledge of statistics. Some knowledge of linear algebra is useful in part of Chapter 9, and is necessary to read Chapter 12. A proof is given of all the equations related to geostatistics, and which are not usually found in elementary textbooks on statistics. Understanding of these proofs is not necessary for practical application of the theory, and the reader may wish to skip them on a first reading, concentrating attention on the numerous simple practical examples given. Although the theoretical geostatistician will not find much new material in this publication, it is anticipated that he will develop some interest in the practical approach chosen to prove the various geostatistical equations. Many people and institutions contributed to the preparation and completion of this work. I am much indebted to Dr D. G. Krige and the Anglo Transvaal Consolidated In- vestment Company Limited, who gave me the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time working on geostatistical problems, both theoretical and practical, during the time that I was in their employment. Dr Krige contributed greatly in developing my interest in studying both the theory and practice of geostatistics, always insisting that a correct balance be kept between theory and practice. Discussion: L. T. Campbell Pitt: When Mr Garrett and I discussed the design and construction of plugs and bulk head doors to resist great water pressures in mines about ten years ago, we visualized an emeregeny when there would be no time for site preparation. We could not however, anticipate a problem of such magnitude and urgency as the one described in the paper under discussion. The paper very clearly describes the flooding and the measures taken to save the mine. The complete flooding would have been a national disaster. The account of the combat between man and water reads like the account of a military operation. It was an endeavour which achieved success because there was a master plan, tenacity and, in fact, heroism. The paper is of necessity a long one. In my contribution I will mention some historical facts and factors that I believe have relevance to the flooding and the saving of the mine. It is of great satisfaction to me to have been one of the two initiators of a new approach to underground plug design and construction. The investigation was taken over by a Chamber of Mines Committee which combined our early work with further research and the resulting data had a significant bearing on the West Drie emergency plug designs. The final plug length was correctly based on the requirements to obviate leakage. A plug to have structural strength only would have been very much shorter but so ineffective as to have become a waste of labour, material, and in consequence, wasted the limited time available to prevent flooding of the whole mine. The figure of 75 lb per sq in. sheer stress provided a very ample margin, in my opinion, but under the very difficult site conditions and the limitations of plug material suitable for the very unusual construction, justified such a figure. There must have been considerable temptation to reduce the safety margin due to the urgency to complete and commission the plugs, but it is much to the credit of the directors of this operation that nothing less than a safe design was permitted. In about 1945 Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mining Company, which was then mining in to the West Driefontein area to assist in early development, decided to protect themselves from a possible inrush of water from the latter mine. A bulk head door was accordingly designed and installed on 2 level between 1945 and 1948 at 4,218 ft below surface. Since West Driefontein paid for it, Gold Fields consulting mechanical engineers collaborated with their colleagues of Rand Mines who completed their design after a few modifications were agreed. This door was never used to prevent an inrush into Blyvooruitzicht but the exercise was very useful to Gold Fields when the high pressure doors initially installed on 10 and 12 levels between Nos. 2 and 3 shafts to enable isolation of one section of the mine from another were designed. At that time the capacity of West Driefontein to cope with an inrush of water was comparatively small because the storage in stoped areas and the installed pump capacity were much less than in later years. These doors together with others of the same design were later moved to the lower levels served by sub vertical shafts. In addition, doors to prevent flood water entering the pump chambers on 18 level were installed at each end of that level, and designed for a head of 360 feet so that water would have to reach 16 level before the pumps were flooded. All these doors were called upon to hold water and it is reported that only a small plug in one of the doors and a 4 in. dia flanged pipe joint failed. The lesson is that in these cases the smallest details warrant as much attention as the major ones. That these were the only equipment failures when so much depended on equipment, is very much to the credit of design engineers, both of the Gold Fields head office and companies who supplied both mechanical and electrical equipment. Until I had read the paper I wondered why the policy of isolation by bulk head doors was not continued as the development moved eastward towards the Bank Compartment and particularly when it pierced the Bank dyke. The reasons have been given in the paper. It was unreasonable to expect provisions to be made to counter the remote contingency that the large installed pumping capacity and mine capacity to store water would be exceeded during a peak inrush. When pumps were being considered for West Driefontein, it was decided that the Gold Fields standard underground main pumps at that time of 1 million gallons per 24 hours would be too small. Three alternatives were considered. 1. Very large units that would require underground sub assembly and dismantling of both pump and motor. 2. The largest pump and motor that could be conveyed as a complete pump or motor from surface to the pump chamber. 3. Pumps of higher speed to reduce dimensions and weight. It was decided to adopt alternate 2 because of avoidance of transporting pumps in parts and assembling underground. Alternative 3 was not favoured because high speeds would have introduced problems of more exact rotor balancing. I believe the decision was correct and in the crisis enabled comparative easy transport of pumps and motors to surface for overhaul and, if required, transfer to other pump stations. The standard pump thus became a 10 stage 1,500 rpm pump with a capacity of approximately 2 million gallons per 24 hours against a static head that varied

"The authors were tasked with introducing safe and efficient drilling and blasting practices to a small artisanal mine located in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. The current mining methods employed at the mine are inefficient as rockbreaking is conducted utilizing hammer and chisel, or by drilling and blasting with no understanding of the rockbreaking process. The paper discusses the drill and blast cycle, as well as the associated activities necessary to support the mining cycle. The challenges and critical aspects in implementing drill and blast activities are discussed, as well as some of the technical aspects, i.e.drilling pattern, initiation and timing of the blast, and handling of misfires. Ancillary issues such as ventilation, training, communication, effective planning, logistics, and human relations are also examined. IntroductionRockbreaking accounts for 60% of the direct mining costs in small-scale mining. When drilling and blasting practices are poorly implemented the process becomes inefficient and dangerous. The introduction of a proven drill and blast system to artisanal mining offers a number of challenges, with safety being considered the backbone of any sustainable operation and a standard that cannot be compromised.The paper is based on a project at an artisanal cassiterite (tin) mining operation in a small village in the Kayonza District in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. A drill and blast programme utilizing industry best practice was introduced at an underground development end; a raise developed at an inclination of 23 degrees. The underground working is accessed via a 17 degree incline shaft with an operating length of 105 m and serviced by a single drum winder. The winder operates at a speed of about 3.5 m/min hoisting two 1 t wagons from the bottom of the incline to surface for tipping (Figure 1)."

The piloting and eventual large-scale operation of fixed-bed carbon columns for the recovery of gold from plant effluents is described. A fixed-bed carbon pilot plant comprising three adsorption columns was used for the recovery of gold from clarified plant effluent at the Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company (West Division). The effluent ,which contained 0,1 toO,S g/t of gold and less than 10 g/t of free cyanide, was adjusted to pH 8 prior to use. Daily acid treatment of the carbon circuit with 3 per cent hydrochloric acid was shown to have a most significant effect on increasing the gold adsorption. The acid treatment involved a plant downtime of only I to 2 minutes per day. High loadings of gold (up to 30 k g/t) and copper (up to 75 k g/t) were obtained on the leading column, while the gold recoveries averaged 98 per cent over 17 weeks of continuous operation. The subsequent elution of loaded carbon in a pilot elution column indicated the use of abnormally high amounts of the pretreatment reagent (caustic soda and cyanide) used in gold elution. This was attributed to the high loading of copper on the carbon. However, the elution of both the gold and the copper at 110°C with demineralized water as the eluant was satisfactory. In a similar large-scale operation, three fixed-bed carbon columns each containing 4,5 t of carbon were used to treat 80 to 120 t/h of plant effluent with a gold concentration of about 0,15 g/t. Gold loadings of 5 to 6 k g/t were obtained regularly, while the gold recovery averaged 97 per cent over a 12-month period. The capital cost of the plant was recovered in 2 to 3 months. The evidence presented strongly suggests that copper plays a significant role in the adsorption and elution of gold under the prescribed conditions, and in the subsequent precipitation of gold following acidification of the eluates. The formation of a highly insoluble gold-copper complex produced under acid conditions appears to explain many of the observations made in the investigation.

Electric smelting at Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited of nickel - copper concentrates containing platinum-group metals By J. C. MOSTERT Pr. Eng.. B.Sc. (Stellenboseh). M.Sc. Met. Eng. (Fellow) and P. N. ROBERTS Pr. Eng.. B.Sc. Eng. (Rand) (Fellow) The processes involved in the smelting in an electric furnace of nickel-copper concentrates containing platinumgroup metals are described. These are concentrate drying, pelletizing, pellet drying, and flux and pellets proportioning, followed by smelting of the concentrate in a submersible-electrode electric furnace, which is discussed in more detail. The furnace matte is blown in a converter to the white-metal stage and is cast in moulds, whilst the slag is granulated, ground, and floated for recovery of valuable metals and afterwards pumped to the tailing dam.

The discovery of the gold-rich Main Reef Group of reefs on the farm Langlaagte in 1886 marked the opening of the richest and most extensive goldfield in history. Mining of the narrow reefs progressed from the outcrops to more than 3,5 km, and has made South Africa the foremost mining country in the world. Changes in the political and socio-economic climate create a new challenge to the gold-mining industry. The most significant of these is the emergence of Black trade unions, with their demands for higher wages, improved safety, job advancement, and abolition of discriminatory legislation. Industrial conflicts on gold mines have risen significantly in the past ten years, and are likely to continue in the future, although the causes of these conflicts may change. Events largely outside the control of the gold-mining industry, such as the improved dollar price for gold and the depreciation of the value of the rand relative to major currencies, have enabled the industry to meet the demands for higher wages and to narrow the wage gap. However, labour productivities have improved insignificantly and are a cause of major concern for the future development of the industry. Continued pressure in the industrial-relations area, the inflation of working costs, and the extension of mining operations to greater depths and more difficult areas create major challenges to mine managements and mining engineers. Significant improvements in mining technology, environmental control, and safety will have to be made to ensure the long-term survival of the industry. The unavoidable introduction in deep gold mines of mechanization on a larger scale to meet the requirements of higher labour productivities and a better and safer underground environment will have a major impact on the cost and management structure of these mines. Engineering will assume a more important role on deep gold mil1es, and management styles and structures will have to be adapted to accommodate these changes. The supply of suitably qualified engineers, technicians, and artisans will be a crucial factor controlling the rate of technological change. The industry is well-geared through its Group system to meet these challenges, and to benefit from the experience gained in the operation of highly mechanized mines. However, changes take time to implement and there is very little time left.

The paper will attempt to identify the threats, however obscure, that could confront the South African platinum industry. South Africa has the largest reserves of platinum group metals in the world, and is the largest producer of those metals. This situation is no different from that which existed in the gold sector fifty years ago. Since then South Africa?s share of world gold production has dwindled, and the gold mining industry has lost its dominance. Unlike gold, platinum has widespread use as an industrial commodity. Its investment value is a minor portion of its total value. It is therefore subject to different market forces. The sheer magnitude of the industry in South Africa obscures the fact that it is a wasting industry, and that South Africa exports almost all its production as a refined metal in the form of autocatalyst. Since Hotelling published his seminal work The economics of non-renewable resource in 1931,the science of mineral economics has developed exponentially. The paper will present a background of mineral economic theory and compare to this the development of the South African platinum industry. Of particular concern to a mineral exporting country is the question of mineral rent?its definition and employment. This will be the mail theme of the paper.

Despite their inadequacy, assumptions of isotropy and homogeneity are often applied to the analyses of in situ permeability tests. In this paper, we exam the effects of anisotropy and heterogeneity on Pressure Pulse Test (PPT) and Constant Head Injection Test (CHIT) by means of numerical approaches. Some new findings that offer practical considerations in properly interpreting in-situ permeability tests are presented. Malgré leur manque de précision inhérente, les assomptions d'anisotropie et d'hétérogénéité sont souvent utilisées lors de test de perméabilité in situ. Dans cette étude, nous examinons les effets de l'anisotropie et de l'hétérogénéité sur le test par pression pulsée et le test à injection à charge hydraulique constante par le biais de la simulation numérique. Des nouveaux résultats permettant une interprétation pratique et claire des test de perméabilité in-situ sont présentés. Trotz ihrer inhärenten Ungeeignetheit werden häufig Annahmen über Isotropie und Homogenität auf Analysen von in-situ Permeabilitätstests angewendet. In diesem Papier untersuchen wir die Effekte von Anisotropie und Heterogenität auf Durck-Impuls-Test (PPT) und Konstant-Kopf-Einspritztest (CHIT) mit numerischen Ansätzen. Einige neue Befunde, die zu praktischen Erwägungen zur richtigen Interpretation von in-situ Permeabilitätstests führen, werden vorgestellt.

Abstract: Data are presented from two sites in southeast England, where problems were encountered in tunnelling through ground containing flint. In response to the difficulties, substantial laboratory testing programmes were initiated to determine the strength of the flints.It is shown that the strength varies very considerably, even within a single flint particle and that the practice of estimating unconfined compressive strength by a single multiplier applied to the point load strength index (Is(50)) may give misleading results. The preparation of UCS specimens for testing was found to be very difficult and it is recommended that tunnel machine capacity is assessed relative to Is(50). Résumé: Des données sont presentées sur deux sites dans le sud-ouest de l’Angleterre,où le perçage d’un tunnel dans un sol contenant du silex a posé des problémes. En consequences de ces difficultés, des programmes substatiels de recherché en laboratoire ont été initiés afin de déterminer la resistance des silex. Il est demontré que la resistance varie considérablement, même au sein d’une particule de silex, et que la pratique de estimation de la résistance en compression non confinée, (UCS) par le biais d’un simple coefficient appliqué au ‘point load strength index (Is50)’ pourrait donner des resultants trompeurs. La préparation de specimens UCS destinés aux tests s’est avérée trés difficile et il est recommandé que la capacité de la machine de perçage de tunnels soit calculée relativement au Is50. Zusammenfassung: Daten von zwei Standorten in Südosten von England, wo Probleme beim Tunnelbau durch feuersteinhaltigen Grund antraffen, sind angegeben. Wegen diesen Schwierigkeiten wurden Laboratoriumsforschungsprogramme eingeleitet, um die Festigkeit von Feuersteinen zu bestimmen. Es wurde gefunden, dass die Festigkeit sehr unterschiedlich war, selbst bei einzelnen Feuersteinstücken, und dass die Praxis, die unbegrenzte Kompressionsfestigkeit (uKf) auf Grund eines einzigen Multiplikationsfaktors vom Punktladefestigkeitsindex (Is50) abzuschätzen, zu irreführenden Resultaten führt. Die Vorbereitung der uKf Prüfstücke war sehr schwierig und es wird vorgeschlagen, dass die Kapazität der Tunnelbaumaschine in Abhang der Is50 bestimmt wird.

"Steepening of slopes provides the means to reduce waste extraction and increase ore recovery in open pit mines; however, it may also adversely affect safety by posing a higher risk of slope failure. The implementation of slope monitoring programmes is recommended to manage this risk inherent in steeper slopes. In this paper, the design and evaluation of monitoring campaigns to measure subsurface deformation and groundwater pore pressure in open pit mines is presented. The monitoring programmes were applied to a theoretical case of an open pit mine designed using DeepMine software (BOAMine SpA, 2015). Mine plans were developed based on the initial base case scenario with monitoring programmes considered for four types of monitoring instrumentation: two established technologies, in-place inclinometers (IPIs) and vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs); one emerging technology, the ShapeAccelArray (SAA); and a novel technology under development, the Enhanced Networked Smart Markers (ENSMs). Technical and economic appraisals of the monitoring programmes and sensitivity analysis of the developed mine plans showed that using ENSMs spaced every 4 m had the lowest cost per unit of data gathered. IntroductionSeveral open pit mines have already exceeded their design life and, as they become deeper and reach depths over 1000 m, they face higher rock stress levels and tensile deformations (Stacey and Xianbin, 2004; Stacey et al., 2003). The more complex the conditions in modern open pit mines, the more difficult it is to achieve long-lasting, stable pit slopes and to meet the mine’s economic needs: maximize financial returns, minimize risks to operational safety, achieve optimal ore recovery, and minimize waste extraction (Stacey, 2009). Steepening of slopes provides the means to reduce waste extraction and increase ore recovery (Stacey, 2009; Calderon and Tapia, 2006; Bye and Bell, 2001; Jefferies, Lorig, and Alvarez, 2008); however, it may adversely affect operational safety, as steeper slopes are less stable than shallow slopes (Steffen et al., 2008; Mphathiwa and Cawood, 2014)."
