Newmont is one of the few remaining large mining companies that was established in the early nineteen hundreds. The company has a long, colourful and enviable history. This paper provides highlights of Newmont?s business and technical history since its inception in 1916, its transition to a ?gold only? company in the early 1990s and progress since that time up until the present day. Details of Newmonts current gold operations and its gold production profile for 2008 are also provided in the paper Over the last 50 years Newmont has developed a host of innovative gold technologies to meet the challenges of treating the complex refractory gold ores, found at the company owned mines in the Carlin region and around the world. Details of the technologies are provided and they include chlorination, roasting, bacterial and pressure leaching, leaching gold with thiosulphate and thiocyanate, N2Tech flotation, HPGR treatment of hard and abrasive ores and, finally, the use of Hydro-Jex technology for improving gold recovery from heaps.

A strong incentive exists for the coal-preparation engineer to improve plant efficiency by modifying circuits and upgrading process equipment, since these result in lower production costs and more valuable plant products. At the Grootegeluk Coal Mine, it was found that the overall plant efficiency could be improved by modifications to the dense-medium circuits, the installation of additional process equipment for the recovery of fine coal, and improvement of the fine-material processing circuit. Apart from these modifications, there is still potential to increase the plant efficiency, particularly in the utilization of plant waste, the recovery of slimes, and even the improvement of cycloning performance as a result of new cyclone design. This paper points to the potential wealth locked up in existing coal-preparation plants, and shows how the coal-preparation engineer, with new technology at his disposal, can unlock this wealth.

Consideration is given to the technical and economic feasibility of freeze desalination as a technique for the simultaneous provision of ice to cool deep mines and for the desalination of mine water. Freeze desalination has not been developed fully or commercially. For sea-water applications, it may not offer significant advantages over other methods of desalination but, for the unique mining application, a single dual purpose plant that produces desalinated ice could offer significant cost savings over combinations of separate desalinators and ice-makers. The current status 01 freeze desalination is reviewed, and the important aspects relating to mines are discussed. Some freezing processes that could be suitably modified are described. The possible use of conventional ice-making machines for desalinating mine water is also discussed.

Dry deep screening is an important method of classifying moist fine mineral. The rigid-flexible coupled elastic screening technology can simultaneously solve the problem of traditional screen surface plugging and the low service life of a screen surface in the process of deep screening. In this paper, two kinds of rigid-flexible coupled elastic screen surfaces were introduced. The structural characteristics of a screen surface were studied. The mechanism of a rigid flexible coupled elastic screen surface to overcome hole blockage was revealed. Finally, 3 mm and 6 mm screening experiments were carried out. When the external moisture content was below 12.79% for the 6 mm dry screening experiment of elastic rod screen surface, the screening efficiency was above 81%. When the external moisture content was below 11.31% for the 3 mm dry screening experiment of elastic screen surface based on ball hitting, the screening efficiency was above 83%. In the mining method used at O'Okiep Copper Company (OCC), vertical crater retreat, the prime requirement for the fill is that it should be sufficiently strong to be free-standing to a height of 150 m. Other requirements are minimal decant and drainage water, and high pulp density to allow large tonnages to be placed quickly and alleviate transport problems. The excessively high cost of cement precluded the use of a cement-based fill, and after three years of extensive investigations a backfill based on the smelter slag was produced. Currently a fill with a uniaxial compressive strength of greater than 1 000 kPa after one month is being produced. This is in excess of the design specification of 850 kPa after 2 - 3 months. The research and development which went into the slagfill is briefly covered; the production of the fill from the various raw materials is described; and the design and control systems of the backfill plant, the reticulation system and its monitoring are examined. Finally, the implications of this high- quality fill for the mining programme are assessed.

Logistic curves are used in the prediction of the primary production of tin metal from estimated worldwide resources. Such curves are asymptotic to the total cumulative reserves, which are a function of prevailing metal prices and total resources. The figures for tin resources are based on the findings of Robertson and of Brobst and Pratt, the latter authors including estimates of undiscovered deposits. It is suggested that tin production will slump from the present level to 100000 long tons per annum by the end of the century, but will reach a new peak of 200 000 long tons some thirty years later. It appears that production will never exceed 300000 long tons per annum unless substantial new resources, excluding those predicted, are discovered.

Discussion: A. Hazell (Associate Member) and T. J. Kotze (Graduate Member): The authors must be congratulated on the development of a versatile computer programme for determining the stresses and displacements resulting from mining operations. As a design tool it will no doubt take its rightful place together with the analogue computer. Union Corporation made use of this digital computer programme whilst still in its development stage to determine the stress distributions which were causing the unexpected failure of the Marievale sub-incline shaft. Two features arising from this investigation may be of interest to members, namely: A. The solution to the problem of stabilizing a rectangular inclined shaft, which turned out to be contrary to accepted mining practice, and B. A comparison between the results obtained with the pure digital system and the analogue computer. A. The shaft is nine ft high and 20 ft wide, dipping at 9° to the horizontal and crossing the bedding planes. Fig. 1 is a plan and Fig. 2 is a section of the sub-incline shaft pillar area showing the relative positions of the shaft and reef as well as their respective dips. The deepest point in the shaft is 3 300 ft below surface and the requirement of a stress free ground surface may not be satisfied. It also means that the original gravitational stresses are low. A 900 ft wide pillar was left to protect the bottom section of the shaft, the top section being understoped years ago. Extraction of the pillar was started at the beginning of last year, mining operations being carried out in the accepted manner, starting beneath the shaft and mining outwards. The approach did, however, turn out to be the wrong one, because failure of the shaft was noticed soon afterwards. Even small movements were serious in this case due to the low clearance between the skips and the shaft supports. During October, 1968, failure between benchmarks 8 and 10 (see Fig. 1) became so excessive that hoisting speeds had to be reduced. Failure continued to occur and, by the end of March, 1969, failure had propagated up the shaft as far as benchmark 7, and down as far as benchmark 12. As this shaft had a tight hoisting schedule it was imperative that a quick solution be found to arrest the failure.

Changes in the pattern of computer systems for mine planning and geologic evaluation are occurring as a consequence of the introduction of 3-D high performance graphics terminals. The VULCAN system is described and an outline of its functionality is discussed. Increasingly, the integration of both database systems and graphics and databases will occur, allowing a greater degree of information access to mine operators. The system covers areas of database, drillhole graphics, mine design and layout, surface and solid modelling as well as reserve inventory generation. The design of the software is such that it is fairly commodity-independent and entirely menu-driven, to enable non computer-trained personnel easily to access the system.

The concept of underground ore processing, in which valuable ore and waste are separated at a coarse particle size to improve the economics of operations and minimise the environmental impact, seems attractive from a sustainability perspective. Perceived benefits of such an operation include energy and cost savings due to a reduced hoisting load, a reduced footprint of surface operations, and using material for backfill that has not been contaminated by process chemicals. Progress in the South African mining industry in this area has however been below expectation, and opportunities for underground processing in deep, narrow reef operations were therefore explored by an Excel-based simulation with sensor-based sorting (SBS) as concentration technology. Various PGM mining scenarios incorporating factors such as the mining rate, depth of operation, and effects of dilution and particle size on the metallurgical efficiency, were compared. Whilst these initial results can be regarded as indicative only, they have shown that the economics of such an operation are driven by selective mining at significantly higher rates than achievable with conventional methods. Also, the cost of preparing, conveying and placing rock backfill will need to be lower than that of hoisting waste and depositing it on a surface dump. Another aspect to be addressed is whether ore sorting machines would be able to operate under harsh conditions underground and what provision would need to be made to ensure their efficient operation. Further investigations should focus on refining costs, incorporating environmental considerations in the modelling of economics and sustainability, and compare greenfields with brownfield scenarios. This paper reports on a test that was conducted underground in a mine for two years on the following: pipes coated with paint, fusion-bonded powder, metal, or impregnated tape; and aluminium, stainless-steel, 3CR12, and plastic pipes. It was found that the degree of corrosivity and mechanical damage increases substantially from the shaft of a mine towards the stope. Thus, the range of coatings that can be used successfully is fairly large in the shaft and haulageways, but corrosion-resistant materials, especially corrosion-resistant steels, need to be used close to the stope. A study of the relative costs involved showed the costs of pipes of low-carbon steel and unplasticized polyvinyl chloride to be lowest, and those of epoxy-coated steel pipes to be highest.

Practical values for the firing conditions suited to detonators of local manufacture are tabulated. The design principles of blasting circuits are outlined. This information can be used by mine management to ensure that electric blasting will be done efficiently and economically.

Kamoto Copper Company is a copper cobalt mining company established in Lualaba Province of Democratic Republic of Congo under a Joint Venture between Glencore PLC and Gecamines (the state-owned mining company). Operations consist of underground and open pit mines, a concentrator producing sulfide concentrate and oxide ores milled slurry, and a hydrometallurgy plant producing copper cathode and cobalt hydroxides from concentrate and ores. The production capacity is 300 k/a of copper cathode and 35 kt/a of cobalt hydroxide. Since Q4 2020, the Luilu hydrometallurgy plant has experienced operational instabilities due to increase in proportion of dolomite in the ore mined and fed to the plant. This was diagnosed by the significant increase in calcium grade in ore and acid consumption, continuous foaming, and overflow of tanks with subsequent adverse impact on equipment availability due to corrosion caused by acidic spills, structure integrity, and safety concerns around the acidic slurry spills. Production was adversely impact due above equipment availability and often throughput restriction to mitigate the foaming and overflows. A high gangue-acid-consuming ore management programme was developed with the aim of mitigating these impacts. The programme included: (i) use of defoamer agent in leach to stop foaming and overflow, (ii) design of a mechanical solution to leach foaming and overflow, and (iii) froth flotation for copper and cobalt minerals separation from dolomite. Only option (i) is presented in this paper. Through laboratory testwork, pilot-plant testing, plant trial, and full plant implementation, Kamoto Copper successfully implemented a defoamer agent (Kemfoam X9980) dosing at leach, resulting in significant reduction in foaming and overflow of leach reactors and countercurrent decantation thickeners. The optimum defoamer dose rate obtained was 20 mg/L. Since then, the Luilu recovered its operational stability, the corrosion of critical equipment ceased, and availability improved as the acidic leach slurry spills ceased. The constraint on throughput due to leach foaming was addressed and the frequency of sliming events in the thickeners was significantly reduced as the foaming on the supernatant surface ceased, with subsequent significant reduction in interfacial crud in solvent extraction.

Emphasis is placed on comprehensive definition, which is vitally important to the achievement of the goals of time, cost, and quality set for a project.

Engineers should apply when they believe that their training has met all the requirements of Policy Statement No. 1/3. Pitfalls Remember that it is the applicants' training that must be evaluated, and this requires the avoidance in the application of vague generalities such as 'My duties were design plant including its economic evaluation' or 'I was engaged in . . Requirements An example of what is required can perhaps best illustrate the point.

He stressed that discussion at Colloquia would be completely informal and would not be recorded unless the contributor requested publication. In conclusion, he thanked the organising committee, the authors and the contributors, and introduced the author of the first paper. The following papers were presented:- 'The future development of the Iron and Steel Industry' by J. P. Coetzee (Published in the Journal March 1971). Among those who contributed to the paper were Dr Bleloch, Dr K. Gebhard, Dr Way and Professor Müller. The main point made by Dr Bleloch related to the reserves of coking coal and of coal for power generation this in country and he deduced that in South Africa we are critically short of coking coal. On the basis that 4 million tons per year of coking coal are consumed for our present steel production, over 16 million tons would be required to meet the anticipated expansion in steel output by A.D. 2000. This must be set against the grim forecast made by the Coal Advisory Board in 1967 that our national reserves of coking coal will be exhausted before A.D. 2000. This gives tremendous significance to the development work presently being carried out by Iscor on alternative methods for coke production. On the other hand the blast furnace may have to be replaced by an alternative process for the reduction of iron ores, e.g., the use of rotary kilns followed by electric arc smelting. Dr Bleloch also expressed grave forebodings about the reserves of bituminous coal, pointing out that with present methods of mining the recoverable coal in any given reserve is in general only 50 per cent of that reserve. He stated that in the past seventy years great quantities of coal have been forever placed beyond the reach of mining by being undermined by extraction of lower seams or lost by being burned. A final point made by Dr Bleloch was the fast rise in the capital investment in a fully integrated steel plant, the figure having risen in the past decade from just over R200 to R350 per ton of finished steel per annum. Dr Gebhard spoke of the direct reduction processes for iron making pointing out the difficulties of securing a high percentage of reduction and the relatively high cost of smelting in electric arc furnaces. The acoustic means of gas flow rates measurement is considered with particular reference to the equations of acoustic waves propagation in aerodynamic fields. The paper defines how it is possible to minimize the error of integrating acoustic anemometers.
